Good morning morons and moronettes and welcome to AoSHQ's stately and prestigious Sunday Morning Book Thread.
Damien Walter Explains It All For You There have been many times where I've found the British press, both in form and in content, to be vastly superior to our own. This isn't one of them. In the area of lame-ass commentary, the Brits have demonstrated that they are capable of equalllng or even exceeding our own, native-born, lame-ass commentators. Mr. Walter has devoted most of an entire column to the Hugo Awards/Larry Correia dust-up. And, guess who he thinks is at fault?
It is no coincidence that, just as it outgrows its limiting cultural biases, science fiction should also face protests from some members of the predominantly white male audience who believed it to be their rightful domain. What the conservative authors protesting the Hugo awards perceive as a liberal clique is simply science fiction outgrowing them, and their narrow conception of the genre's worth.This is a prime example of the "he started it, he hit me back" defense that progressives utilize when conservatives dare to object to their hardcore totalitarian tactics. So, according to Walter, who never bothers to tell you who struck the first blow, all the brouhaha in the SFWA is because of a bunch of bitter, angry white guys who are sore because they're h8ers whose favorite white authors are being edged out. Walter is kind of like that MSNBC clown Toure or "the fool" I discussed on the book thread several weeks ago. Meaning, one-eyed observers who only know one thing, they only have one card to play, so all they can do is play it over and over again, like a broken record. But in order to do this, such men have to ignore all of the facts that lie outside of their preferred narrative. In this case, Walter has to pretend things like this simply don't exist:
One of the smaller voting blocks at WorldCon is made up of Baen fans. They got me a nomination for the Campbell award for best new author. I was brand new, hardly anybody except for them had heard of me. No problem... Except then people looked to see who these new guys were, and they discovered that I was a Mormon, who owned a gun store, and who'd done gun rights lobbying for the Republican party, and had been running a gun nut political blog for years... Whoops. The SJWs had a complete come apart and began warning each other what a terrible, awful, horrible, bad person I was. (most of them were downright gleeful to proclaim they would never read any books from someone so despicable).In the comment section of his own article, it's fascinating to watch Mr. Walter doubling and tripling down on stupid.

Believe it or not, you can even find good stuff on NBR. There's a new book out about an aspect of the civil rights movement you don't normally hear about: This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed: How Guns Made the Civil Rights Movement Possible by Charles Cobb. You can listen to Professor Cobb being interviewed on an NPR book news show here.Where Do Manly Men Come From? From dangerous boys, of course. I'm referring to The Dangerous Book for Boys by Conn and Hal Iggulden. The book is a compendium of sorts, a combination of:
guidebook and almanac that includes instructions on how to perform coin tricks, and how to make go-carts, tree houses, and paper airplanes that fly long distances. The book also includes articles on famous battles, historical figures (like polar explorers) and the Navajo code talkers, among many others.It's a pity that we have fallen so low that all of this stuff, that every boy used to know, now has to be written down. But it's good that it's preserved. It came to my attention this week because I read that Bryan Cranston's production company is developing it as a comedy TV series, about three boys as they "use their imaginations to navigate growing up without a father." It has a companion book, by the way, The Daring Book For Girls by Andrea Buchanan.
None Dare Call It Hate Speech For some reason, I've been on a grim nostalgia kick lately, recounting some events from when I was growing up that were particularly horrific. First it was the Zodiac murders, but one of my correspondents reminded me that San Francisco was rocked with another series of murders which I had completely forgotten about. So I'd like to see a show of hands here, how many of you older morons remember the 'Zebra' murders? Anyone? (I see your hand, zombie, thank you, you can put it down now.) Officially, 14 people were executed, and 8 others assaulted or shot (including future SF Mayor Art Agnos)during a six-month murder spree in 1973-74. And that's just for SF. Statewide, they think the body count may be as high as 71(!) The 'Zebra' designation comes from the SF Police radio frequency the special task force was given exclusive use of. I've been reading one of the two books written about these murders, Zebra: The True Account of 179 Days of Terror in San Francisco by Clark Howard, which is available to be read for free online, and also downloadable in various formats. It's rich in detail, sometimes overly slow For example, the wikipedia entry blandly notes that the murders were "racially motivated" and that's pretty much all that's said about it. But Howard takes you inside meetings held at Nation of Islam Mosque #26 where a mysterious, well-dressed teacher (nick-named "Vandyke" by the author after his neatly-trimmed beard) lectures relentlessly that the "white devils" are evil and must be killed. And this is the part that interests me. If Howard's descriptions are accurate, this is straight-up incitement to murder, and aren't there criminal penalties for it? I'm only through the first third of the book, but I'm hoping Howard will eventually explain why this cat was never indicted, or even arrested. Perhaps he was able to so adroitly phrase his rhetoric (like Bill Clinton before a grand jury) that he never crossed over the statutory boundary. Or, maybe having caught the murderers and getting them off the streets (spoiler: one of their buds ratted them out for the reward money), the DA's office thought that the threat to public safety had been sufficiently blunted. Note: One of the perps came up for parole last year, but was denied. Fine. But his sentence was "life without possibility of parole", so why are they even considering this?
Cooks pleaded guilty to one of the murders but went to trial on the other shootings and was convicted, along with three other defendants. All were sentenced to life with the possibility of parole. The Board of Parole Hearings denied parole to Cooks at a hearing Tuesday and said he would be considered for release again in 2020.Now, I doubt this would ever happen. I think there would be howls of outrage, even in San Francisco, even 40 years after the fact, if some little-old-lady-in-tennis-shoes judge actually went so far as to release any of the Zebra murderers. But I'm confused as to the necessity of this. If the sentence was truly 'LWP', then why go through this Kabuki theater every 7 years? But if parole is being seriously considered at these hearings, then the 'LWP' sentence is a joke. I wonder if the relatives of the murder victims are angry about this. I know I'd be. [Update: Thank you GnuBreed, for pointing out my obvious error, life with the possibility of parole, not without. Gah, I'm such an idiot] Next up on my own personal magical misery tour: Rat bastard commie Jim Jones and his "People's Temple". The poisoning deaths of over 900 people in 1979 (including 276 children) was the greatest loss of civilian life in American history until 9-11. On second thought, maybe I'll pass, That's too grim, even for me.
Rap Masters I'm sure you've all seen at least one of the "Epic Rap Battles of History" on Youtube. Some of them are kind of meh, but I thought this one, which pits Edgar Allen Poe vs. Stephen King, is actually pretty good. And particularly appropriate for this book thread.
Conspiracy Theorists Assemble! I discovered this week that someone has uploaded a depository of books, articles, and other material on the JFK assassination. They all appear to be .pdf scans. Some of these date back to the mid-1960s, and therefore may be of historical interest. Glancing through the titles, some of them look like they might be interesting, some look tin-foil-hat whacky, and a couple may not have anything to do with JFK at all. Regardless, I don't think there's a one that argues in favor of the 'LCC' (JFK was killed by a lone commie crackpot) version. Yesterday I took a break from the internet and spent most of the day reading "Fortress Rabaul" by Bruce Gamble. I'm about 2/3 through it.
It covers battles around New Guinea, New Britain, and the Coral Sea in 1942-43. I'm about to the point where the Solomons campaign is beginning.

I recently re-read "The Old Regime and the Revolution" by Alexis de Tocqueville.
Therein, de Tocqueville describes that state of France right before the Revolution, how the Jacobins took over, and how they solidified everything that was wrong in France while eschewing anything of worth.
The description of the pre-Revolutionary France is frightening in how it can also describe modern-day America. Many passages can be quoted verbatim and they apply.
His description of the Jacobins, why they did what they did, and what they believe, is one of the best descriptions of the Left that I have read. Whether is is the modern Progressive, the die-hard Marxist, or the furious fascist, they are all descendants of the Jacobins.

Went to a library book sale in the next town on Friday, and scored -- among others -- a copy of T.C. Boyle's The Road to Wellville, replacing a copy I had long ago.
Hilarious, and clearly well-researched. No political statements or polemics, just good reading and a lot of laughs. Unless someone is offended that John Harvey Kellogg was characterized as batshit crazy....
Now all I need is to find a DVD of the movie, which was also terrific.

I lived in S. F. during the Zodiac murders. The killers seemed to be hanging around outside laundromats, shooting people as they came out or went inside.
The SF Chronic played down the racial angle, saying that the victims were Asian as well as White ( but not Black ). It was just a rowdy club where you had to kill Whitey to join...

Re: Hugo Awards: Leftists gave up on forming their own competing organizations to promote their ideals long ago. They gave up because they always failed, since few people liked them and they couldn't survive in a competitive environment. The dominant strategy for the last half-century is to take over a successful traditional institution and corrupt it from the inside, that way they can loot it of all its accumulated material and reputational wealth, tear down everything it stood for, then move on leaving an empty husk behind. The Hugo, the Boy Scouts, colleges and universities, marriage, etc. The grand plan is to do the same with the United States as a whole, and Obama is one of its prime practitioners.

I's a fascinating read and I'm happy to have picked up this copy at a charity book sale for $2
For light reading, I buy cheapie murder mysteries on Kindle and the one I'm reading now is set in Brattleboro!
Now I thought this was a pretend name from the sock poster seen occasionally here but it's a real live town..
Looking at our zillions of books, I've realised that I would have to think about living to about 150yo to finish them all....

Read a fun book this past week: "Of Dice And Men" by David Ewalt. It's a history of Dungeons & Dragons, both as a cultural phenomenon, a business, and how it affected Ewalt's own life. He's a Forbes reporter, so he can write pretty well and understands the financial minutiae. He's also a pretty shameless geek, which is nice.
The brief takeaway: if anybody associated with TSR in the early years had the slightest bit of business sense, things would have been very different. But from sad personal experience I know that business sense is rarer than Vecna's toenails in the roleplaying game field.

I agree, Aussie, Shirer's book is compelling not just for the detailed account of the Third Reich but also his personal recollections of Hitler and the German people. Vic posted the link to it when the Kindle version was on sale on Amazon, and I couldn't stop reading it once I downloaded it.

Bit of a personal grump: Why, oh why was it necessary to come out with a companion volume to the "Dangerous Book" aimed at girls? Girls get special encouragement every day of their lives in school, at church, in all the media. There are scholarships and foundations and whole organizations designed to encourage girls and build their confidence.
What do boys get?
So everything for boys MUST have an equivalent for girls, because otherwise would be sexist and hateful. But girls are such special helpless basket cases that they also need huge amounts of girl-only support and resources, which boys don't get because they're boys.
Does anyone else think this is incredibly sexist and hateful? Sexist because apparently even the empowered womyn running these programs think girls are helpless and kinda stupid, and hateful because they won't lift a finger on behalf of boys.
I know, I know: the book probably exists to capitalize on the brand, but still . . .

Regarding books, I finished reading "Wide Sargasso Sea" by Jean Rhys and, if you haven't read "Jane Eyre", don't waste your time. I was cruising through the first two parts and pretty much enjoying it but the end turned into a massive cluserfuck where nothing made sense if you haven't read the previously mentioned book, which I hadn't. One Houston survivor, Otto Schwarz, said of the Aussies; Those Aussies, if you ever have to get captured, get captured with Aussies.
I have recently read that both the Houston and Perth have been scavenged by salvagers. Possibly Japanese.

My childhood as a semi-rural bumpkinette prompted me to buy the Daring/Dangerous books, which in turn led me to get the Boy Scouts Handbook (1911 version) and the American Boy's Handy Book (Centennial Edition). From the latter's foreword: "Before about 1915, boyhood was seen by most grown-ups as a state of natural savagery. A boy of ten or twelve had more in common with wild Indians than he did with his own parents. He probably even had more in common with his dog... That automatically placed him in a state at war with civilization...".
While some things are pretty outmoded now, if not illegal (how to make knives), it also shows useful pastimes like fishing, know-tying, boat-making, traps, etc. There's even an entire chapter devoted to the fine art of Snowball Warfare.
I remember spending all summer running around the woods with slingshot and Girl Scout knife. Great memories!

This week I listened to John Ringo's 'Live Free or Die: Troy Rising, Book 1', first of a scifi trilogy. Aliens have arrived in our solar system and one is hostile and now controls the Earth. It's one man's story to fight back against the aliens, and surprisingly starts out as a comedy, before settling down into a hard-scifi tale filled with lasers and space ships. I enjoyed it quite a lot and will move on with the sequel.
Ringo puts a number of speeches in the mouth of his main character attacking liberals, and predictably many of them gave it a one-star review on Goodreads.

Currently reading the brand-new book by Andrew McCarthy, "Faithless Execution: Building the Political Case for Obama's Impeachment."
McCarthy's one of the smartest guys out there. Anything he writes has always been worth reading, but in the last few years, I've noticed he's mincing fewer and fewer words, and his writing style has only become more and more engaging. Along with being informative, the book is a page-turner!
McCarthy knows that if it were strictly a legal matter -- i.e., proving that Obama has violated the law on multiple and serious counts -- Obama would be out of office tomorrow. But it's a political matter. And that's why no U.S. president has ever been convicted and removed following impeachment; there was never sufficient political will. This book is McCarthy's effort to help generate the needed political will. His motivation for writing the book is his considered opinion that if we don't, America really may not survive the next 2-1/2 years -- at least, not as America.

So now I have two copies, and they're both good. The weapons section was always my favorite, and I spent hours throwing homemade bolas at trees in my yard.
Even the preface is good: "Unless boys have materially changed their habits in the last few years, it matters little what the preface of this book may contain, for it will be skipped without a passing glance." and indeed, it was. My dad pointed that out to me when he was looking through it, years ago.
So now I have two copies, and they're both good. The weapons section was always my favorite, and I spent hours throwing homemade bolas at trees in my yard.

about a family in occupied France during WWI, and a painting that resurfaced in the 21st century and was claimed by some shirt-tail relatives as being stolen, and the painting's owner (a young widow whose husband had purchased it on their honeymoon) solving the mystery of its provenance.
It was really interesting and compelling, as long as you don't do any math at the end.

Starngely enough, I have 3 of his books, purchased when I did not know that he is black and gay. How rude of me that I am neither. I have Triton, Dhalgren, and Stars In My Pocket Like Grains Of Sand (that last title is awesome, doncha think?).

I've been working my way through Juliet Chase's "Amy's Amazing Adventures (Across Time and Space)" and can assure those that are worried that it also features the occasional manly stew. Nevertheless, I get the impression that I'm not quite in the target audience, which is more of the young female variety; I struggled to get through the first chapter, but the story picks up nicely once she decides to run away. There are a number of small errors of the sort that can't be caught by a spell checker (we are told, for example, that a significant character is named "St. Abyn St. Abyn", but everyone seems to stick to the shorter "St. Abyn"), including a misplaced "we" that makes me wonder just what those Chase girls have been up to and whether the Bureau of Substandards stuff is straight up documentary autobiography.

George McDonald Fraser's memoirs of WWII are some of the most touching writing about the tedium and of hilarity of military service. This period in his life was critical to his later writings. I just re-read The Steel Bonnets: The Story of the Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers recently and his writing brings it all to life. Being married to a descendent of one of the "riding" clans it helped explain some things also.

Currently reading Glen Cook's latest in the "Instrumentalities of the Night" series, called "Working God's Mischief." If you loved the Black Company, you know what the hero is. But it would be unfair to call this that. It's has all the black soldier's humor of BC. But it's far wider in scope, closer to a true epic fantasy. Though one set in a world full of not-truly-veiled references to Late Medeival/Renaissance Mediterranean geography and history (compressing 500 years into 10 as he goes).
It *is* a series, and the new book drops you right in the middle of an action scene that's a cliffhanger from the previous "Surrender to the Will of the Night." I'm enjoying it, but Cook is like Steven Erikson, in that you're either going to love him or hate him. If you can find the beginning book, "The Tyranny of the Night," I'd suggest reading a few chapters and deciding.

About the Zebra murders... no, I never heard of them, and I have read extensively on serial killers.
I guess they don't quite fit the category. At least in the sense that they appear to be political, as opposed to most serial killings, which generally fall into one of two categories: the wild lunatic opportunistic types, and the cold, calculating stalking prey types.
Still, I would have thought I would have seen a mention of them before now. It's strange that I haven't.

This week I read The Known World, by Edward P Jones, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2004. The novel is set in pre-Civil War Virginia and focuses on Henry Townsend, a black farmer/shoemaker and former slave who becomes a slave owner himself. The novel shows how complex the relationships were among slaves, slave owners, free persons of color, and whites who lived in the but objected to slavery. I didn't think I would like the book, but I found it completely absorbing. A few of the characters were plain evil, a few were noble and good, but most - black and white - fell somewhere in between. A good book - well worth reading.

I remember reading about Asian as well as White victims, which gave The Chronic an opportunity to avoid The Obvious. Several people were shot one evening coming out of and inside of a laundromat operated by Chinese. Apparently the killers would shoot Asians if no Whites were handy
once The Usual Suspects realized who the killers were ( and their Kill Whitey motive ) the whole story, with dozens of victims, went into the PC Black Hole of 'this either didn't really happen or isn't really what you know it is"

Well, there's multiple perps involved, not just one lone wacko, which I suppose is usual. Plus, there really isn't anything mysterious about it any longer, no lingering questions like with Zodiac or Jack the Ripper, we basically know who did it, why they did it, and what happened to them.

Well, there's multiple perps involved, not just one lone wacko, which I suppose is usual. Plus, there really isn't anything mysterious about it any longer, no lingering questions like with Zodiac or Jack the Ripper, we basically know who did it, why they did it, and what happened to them.

A few years back I read A Void, by Georges Perec. It was written in French in 1969 as La Dispiration and wasn't translated into English until 1994. Why did it take so long to translate? Because the entire novel is written without the letter 'e'. It's a mystery of sorts about the disappearance of Anton Vowl, and along the way his friends are given clues in the form of famous poems or literary snippets.
Here is the start of Hamlet's soliloquy:
Living or not living: that is what I ask:
If 'tis a stamp of honor to submit
To slings and arrows wafted us by ill winds;

I'm reading "Blood Meridian" by Cormac McCarthy. Had to actually go back a couple of chapters twice because it is so violent I found myself skipping bits mentally.
I read Orson Scott Card's "The Gate Thief" because I'm still trying to find something of his as good as "Ender's Game" but TGT turned out to be of an adolescent genre very much like some of Heinein's stuff where the the lead character wanders into an endless internal dialogue and loses the reader and the plot. I finished it and don't care what happens next to any of the characters.

Oh yeah, the Poe rap reminded me -- if you like the freakier, playful side of Rudy Rucker ( Flek and the Elixer) and not the bitter (everything else), you might enjoy "The Hollow Earth: The Narrative of Mason Algiers Reynolds of Virginia", a young lad's antebellum adventures to the South Pole and up into the hollow earth, accompanied by his slave Otho and Edgar Allen Poe. Written in that grandiloquent 19th century style with authentically dense and impenetrable dialects. I'm only halfway in, so if it tanks I apologize.

Since I am still sitting at home on medical leave, I have had the chance to catch up on my reading. Read Steven Pressfield's "The Last Amazon" and "The Profession" this past week. Both very good reads. I also read "The Good Son" by Michael Gruber. That was pretty good as well, but the focus on Jungian type psychotherapy was kind of hard to follow at times.
I also recommend Gerald Seymour's "Rat Run", and "The Dealer and the Dead". Both very good reads.

If you're an author, reading bad books is good for you, as well as good. Reading something that isn't written well teaches you what not to do and how to avoid it sometimes better than reading what's done well. Those parts that make you cringe and groan and think "why didn't they..." are impressing on an author what to avoid in their own work.
Incidentally, the Koran is worth a read, or at least a scan, to see what it actually says and how its laid out. Its mostly derivative from the Bible in the first part, orders on how to conquer and defeat the unbeliever in the second, and rules on how to live heavily tilted toward how awful women are and how they need to be controlled in the third.
It follows Muhammad's career as a conqueror: stage one he's trying to get converts so its about repentance and the corruption of the world that people must flee. Stage two he's defeating enemies through war and conquering, and stage three he's settled and telling how to run this new society with 50 wives he has to try to deal with. In a way its kind of funny, if it didn't have such awful consequences.

Late again...Currently reading "Desperate," by Daniel Palmer. If you've ever seen the old "Pacific Heights" movie with Michael Keaton as the renter from hell, this is similar except that a couple who have been through the emotional wringer have met a beautiful, pregnant young waif who says she'll give them her baby in exchange for room and board until the kid is born. She's always giving the husband smirks and evil stares -- that, of course, his wife never sees.

I'm current reading the Hugo nominated Equoid by Charles Stross which so far mainly has an annoyingly bombastic narrator/protagonist who has spent the first tenth of this Lovecraft inspired story ragging on Lovecraft.
I recently finished reading the Hugo nominated Wakulla Springs by Andy Duncan and Ellen Klages. Good story, well written, but is historical fiction. There is nothing wrong with historical fiction but the Hugo is a science fiction (and fantasy) award.
And before that I read the Hugo nominated (noticing a theme here?) "The Butcher of Khardov" which is an excellent dark fantasy story. It's short but author Dan Wells crams a lot of story into those pages.

54 This week I listened to John Ringo's 'Live Free or Die: Troy Rising, Book 1', first of a scifi trilogy. Aliens have arrived in our solar system and one is hostile and now controls the Earth. It's one man's story to fight back against the aliens, and surprisingly starts out as a comedy, before settling down into a hard-scifi tale filled with lasers and space ships. I enjoyed it quite a lot and will move on with the sequel.
Ringo puts a number of speeches in the mouth of his main character attacking liberals, and predictably many of them gave it a one-star review on Goodreads.

Stross has been doing Lovecraft-inspired stories for over a decade and just recently noticed the guy was a bit wacky? But then, Stross is somebody who think the NHS is one of humanity's greatest achievements.

I just recently read 'Feed' and hadn't any previous familiarity with Seanan McGuire under any name. I have to wonder if she has considered that the heroes of her story would regard her with contempt, both for her fear of someone mentioning she has gotten rather hefty and for being so, as it would be a severe liability in a zombie outbreak.
