About Those Civilian Taliban Hostages

Well they seem to be a similar type as Bergdahl - naive idealists who thought it would fun to wander around Afghanistan and that their sincerity and niceness would protect them from human predators.

Relatives describe the couple, who wed in 2011 after meeting online, as well-intentioned but naive adventure seekers.

They once spent months traveling through Latin America, where they lived among indigenous Guatemalans and where Boyle grew a long beard that led some children to call him "Santa Claus." The couple set off again in the summer of 2012 for a journey that took them to Russia, the central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, and then finally to Afghanistan. With plans to return home in December ahead of Coleman's due date, they checked in regularly via email during their travels - expressing in their writings an awareness of the perils they faced - and toured the region, staying in hostels and their tent.

The communication abruptly ended on Oct. 8, 2012, after Boyle emailed from an Internet cafe in what he called an "unsafe" part of Afghanistan. The last withdrawals from the couple's bank account were made Oct. 8 and 9 in Kabul. Two months later, an Afghan official told the AP that the two had been abducted in Wardak Providence, a rugged, mountainous Taliban haven.

...They really and truly believed that if people were loved and treated with respect that that would be given back to them in kind," said Linda Boyle, Boyle's mother. "So as odd it as it may seem to us that they were there, they truly believed with all their heart that if they treated people properly, they would be treated properly."

Geraghty: Why Most Women Should Cut Themselves Some Slack

There is a booming industry of authors and pundits - mostly successful women - assessing other women's abilities to balance work and everything else: "Lean In." "The Confidence Gap." "Knowing Your Value." "The Tiger Mom." "Thrive." Sometimes the theme is subtle, sometimes it's explicit: American women, you're doing it wrong! Read my book to learn how to do it right!

I am speaking broadly, and generalizing when I make this next statement: Men do worry about this sort of thing, but they don't talk about it. They're generally less likely to obsess about it, and/or publicly beat themselves up about it. There are not nearly as many bestsellers about the struggles of working fathers, magazine covers asking "Can Men Have It All?", daddy blogs with passionate arguments and comments sections aflame, etc. For the most part, for better or worse, men get up and go to work and just deal with it. Any choice they make is going to have trade-offs. They will probably never be the workers they want to be and the spouse they want to be and the father they want to be, and the friend they want to be and all of the other roles simultaneously. That last word is important.

Working moms, trust me. Most of you are doing just fine. You're doing better than you think. Stop letting immensely wealthy women make you feel like you're not living your life correctly!

Chuck Schumer Doesn't Know What Jefferson Thought or Wrote

But has no problem speaking for him.

"I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what's being proposed here, he'd agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute," Mr. Schumer said.

Australia: The Rules Have Changed

You will not make Australia home.

The rules have changed. Check the facts.

Anyone seeking to illegally enter Australia by boat will never make Australia home.

It is the policy and practice of the Australian Government to intercept any vessel that is seeking to illegally enter Australia and safely remove it beyond our waters.

People who travelled to Australia by boat without a visa will not end up in Australia; they have been sent for processing in Nauru or Papua New Guinea.

They won't be able to work, and could be waiting a long time for their claim to be processed.

Australia has the toughest border protection measures ever. The Australian Government has announced that no temporary or permanent protection visas will be granted to anyone who arrives in Australia by boat without a visa until further notice.

Human Rights Watch Doesn't Understand Terrorism, Islam

Kenneth Roth, the executive director of Human Rights Watch, is a prolific tweeter. And as with most policymakers, analysts, and activists who expound on Twitter, often their tweets can provide windows into their minds more illuminating than carefully edited essays.

Alas, from this recent tweet, it appears that Roth doesn't really understand terrorism. He opines, in twitterese, "Abusive #Nigeria army is big part of why we have Boko Haram. Leahy Law key to ensure US aid doesn't reinforce abuse." Now, don't get me wrong: Nigeria is an extraordinarily corrupt country and its army is often dysfunctional. Nor is the Nigerian army by any means a paradigm of human rights.

But even if the Nigerian army is complicit in human rights abuses, Boko Haram doesn't exist as a protest against the army. It exists because of the influence of Saudi-funded preachers who have for decades sought to introduce radical theological interpretations into Western Africa and elsewhere in the world, some of which have taken root. The speech by Boko Haram leader Abubakr Shekau, which I have previously written about and in which he justified his kidnapping of the still-missing Nigerian school girls, is quite illuminating. It is at once a rant against Christianity, a call for the re-institution of slavery and what in Shekau's mind would be a perfect Islamist order, and finally a general condemnation of both democracy and the West.

Perhaps if the Nigerian army had been just a bit nicer Boko Haram wouldn't have had to kill all those people and sell those girls into sex slavery.

How Bad Kitty Litter Ruined Our Most Successful Nuclear Waste Storage Site

Lesson from this debacle:

1. Always follow directions when storing your nuclear waste

2. Always stick with scoopable, clay-based kitty litter from reputable brands.

3. Anything that's labeled 'Green' sucks, is expensive, and may render entire areas unihabitable or possibly all three.

Secret Service Wants Software to Detect Snark and Sarcasm

The Secret Service is currently using FEMA Twitter analytics currently, according to Donovan, adding that the sarcasm feature is a very minute.

"Our objective is to automate our social media monitoring process. Twitter is what we analyze. This is real time stream analysis. The ability to detect sarcasm and false positives is just one of 16 or 18 things we are looking at. We are looking for the ability to quantity our social media outreach," he told The Washington Post. "We aren't looking solely to detect sarcasm."

Tech experts, however, note that anti-snarky software is not currently available.

"We are not currently aware of any automated technology that could do that (detect sarcasm). No one is considered a leader in that," Jamie Martin, a data acquisition engineer at Sioux Falls, SD based Bright Planet, told CBS News while rolling his eyes and making a jack-off motion.

I may have added a little to the quote in order to assist in the testing of SnarkDetect beta 0.17.

How to Do Visual Comedy

Or how American comedies have gotten visually lazy.

Scientists: Like What's Up With Sun?

Sun God is...unsettled.

The sun has been acting strangely of late, prompting some solar physicists to suggest that once current sunspot activity peaked, which appeared to happen last fall, it could tank and remain that way for several decades.

A prolonged period with few or no spots would have a slight, temporary cooling effect on Earth's climate and a general calming effect on space weather, which would be good news for astronauts and satellites.

...But as cautious as scientists were in 2009, when they first raised the possibility of a looming so-called grand minimum, those earlier suggestions have given way to shrugs of "who knows?"

It's not for lack of trying to understand Earth's host star, say solar physicists attending the June meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Boston. But it's been hard. Some of the evidence that researchers pointed to in suggesting the coming of a grand minimum has vanished. Also, only in the past four years have sun-watchers had the tools to dig deep into the underlying mechanisms driving sunspot cycles.

And if one looks far enough into the past, at least one solar maximum in the past 100 years has been as lackluster as the current one.

If a prolonged dearth of sunspots lies ahead, researchers would be hard pressed to predict it because they don't know what the run-up to a grand minimum looks like. None of the tools in space or on Earth today were available between the mid-1600s and the early 1700s, when the sun went through the Maunder Minimum.

The story behind those 3 lefty assholes who were in IRan was that they were doing what is called "extreme hiking" -- deliberately going into dangerous areas. So, they deliberately crossed into Iran thinking they would not get caught and if they did, their America hating would protect them from death sentences. It did but a couple of million dollars in bribes and 2 years in prison did.

86 Good evening, Horde. I knit a cashmere sock today.

I decided years ago that the ASPCA would never get a penny of my money. They used, in a commercial airing post-2002, footage from the 60s of a man clubbing a seal. Footage which any Canadian kid has seen; the man was wearing green work clothes and completely within his rights to club the seal at the time. It is no longer legal, hasn't been for years, and the ASPCA knows this. Jerks.

95 I shit you not, but when I was in Hawaii, the wife and I sat outside a shop and there was a guy on a payphone next to us arranging to hire a boat to smuggle himself into Australia.

And/or scam money out of someone he kept referring to on the phone as "New Father-in-law." One of the two.

The wife and I sat there for quite some time (we had just gotten some shaved ice and were eating it) and the conversation went on for hours.

I laughed when we left and said "Australia isn't like the US, it's hard to sneak into."

Wife had a standard debrief when she got back and the security guys said "did you witness anything unusual?" And she said "now that you mention it, I thought this was the weirdest thing I've seen in a long time..."

They looked at her and said "uhh..OK, well at least you're honest I guess."

Like I said, could have been real, could have been a scam on the guy on the other end of the line (but starting a scam with "I'm a convicted felon, I can't get a visa for Australia is probably not the best idea.)
Frankly, I didn't care to figure out which, I checked my pocket for my wallet and made sure my wife's purse was still locked and moved on after the ice cream (anytime something odd happens around me, I check for my wallet.)

He is now lying in the window showing the world the balls he hasn't had since he was four months old. But, he's proud - I guess that's what matters.

Hawthorne is an old tried and true remedy for blood pressure spikes.

I love salty foods, and sometimes overdo it.
So I've learned that I can take some Hawthorne and it will quickly counteract the effects of too much salt...and bring my BP right down.

The best version of it for this, is a Hawthorne Extract, in liquid form.
It's nice to have some on hand for emergency situations.

I get mine from a site called Wise Woman Herbals.
**Click my name for a linky to see it.

You can also get Hawthorne in capsule form at most places that have vitamins.

112 So Pop is in the hospital again. Eldest Daughter called me last night to tell me he had a heart attack and fell, the life alert brought the rescue squad to the house and they shipped him to the cardio unit in Gainesville where they found out that he also has pneumonia. He's 83, so that's a real concern.

He thinks he is in the hotel in Biloxi, he's pissed at the waitresses (nurses) because they won't bring him any wine and he wants to see the manager because his bed is too small and hard. Also he's pissed at my daughters because they won't take him downstairs to the casino.

I'm hearing he's also broke, it looks like his new pals have cleaned him out...as expected. But now it looks like they can get him declared incompetent (at least for a little while) so Eldest Daughter's POA kicks in so she can get a clear idea of what's going on.

And so I sit...waiting to see if I have to go to Florida again...

Looking at a few thousand years of data, when you're attempting to make a planetary prediction...seems like a foolish thing to do.

I have no idea. FoxNews alone must have a several hundred people. A hundred or two in talk radio. No idea how many bloggers make a living at it. Add up the staffs of Blaze, DailyCaller, Breitbart, etc, etc.

I'm guessing a few thousand, but no idea.

163 As to blood pressure: there are a ton of scary urban legends that are not representative of reality. Most important is how high compared to your normal. Anything over 200 is worthy of attention, or if you have symptoms like headache, blurry vision, or passing out. But if your BP is 160/90 and you have no other symptoms, just make an appointment to see your doctor. It's years of untreated blood pressures that get people, not a day or week of it.

Posted by: EC at June 05, 2014 11:19 PM (doBIb)

Something I've been wondering about that situation: back in '97 I did a 90-day TAD to Border Shore Patrol. We had a little office at the San Ysidro border crossing building, and being day shift we crossed over twice a day to look for servicemembers that had managed to get tossed into jail. Usually these were petty B.S. deals for Public Intox, Urinating in Public, or Didn't Have Twenty Bucks to Bribe the Cop With cases. Once in awhile, we'd have something more serious. We even had a guy doing time down there on bogus manslaughter charges. In each of these cases we worked to arrange getting these guys out, and with the exception of the guy in the pen, we were always successful. Additionally, by visiting them and bringing them food twice a day, we were able to keep tabs on their health and welfare. We were never denied seeing these guys and had a liaison officer in the TJPD that helped mus out. Overall, the attitude of the Mexican authorities was, "Just toss us a little cash and get them out of our jail." I'm guessing that that whole mechanism is gone now.

The problem is the whining and begging to get the rest of us to bail them out when they fuck up by the numbers. Or worse, to risk good mens' lives rescuing people who got themselves into stupid, preventable situations.

There's a reason that it's become popular to charge lost hikers for the search and rescue efforts when they get turned around in the woods while relying on their Iphone for navigation, without even a compass in reserve.

312 Anyone else watching the replay of Megyn Kelly?

Woah...she's pissed.

"How dare they go after these guys!"
-- She's referring to Barky's weasels going after the guys who were in Deserter Boy's platoon, who are speaking out now...saying they are"liars" or are "swiftboating" Deserter Boy.

She has six of them on her show now...and is cutting away from them, to talk to other people...then going back to them.

She's getting ready to show another segment with the six guys.

Meh. No occasion. I don't think you caught my conversation about
him needing heartworm meds (you know I'm poor), but I flirted my way

sure I like this topical stuff, but at $20 per dose, I ain't

Anyway, you would've laughed if you saw him strutting around
afterwards. Like he was a BOSS. Actually tried to take on a pit bull
with a head the size of a basketball.

Please be very careful and get to the doctor to be reaccessed tomorrow. Mine was stroke level right after I had my son years ago. I felt nothing, but it was so bad, I wasn't allowed to do anything but lay on my left side. I couldn't have visitors, couldn't see my baby, had no roommates even. I was down at the end of an empty hospital corridor with the lights out. They wanted me in the calmest surroundings possible. It's nothing to "wait out." Go make sure you're alright!

High BP is because of low sodium levels. I ate Cheese Doodles & drank less water. Cheese Doodles have 380 mg per serving.
I have always drank water all the time, except for 15-+ years I would go to Starbucks, no matter what winter weather & I had to go outside, to go get Iced Venti Americano with extra shot of espresso.

I lost my appetite for coffee for no reason. That much caffeine should have given me high BP, but it did not.

CVT is Continuously Variable Transmission; Xtronic sounds like a brand-name that either means it's actuated electronically or, in the case of a hybrid, converts mechanical motion to electricity and back to mechanical motion.

I've honestly never heard of stroke being related to low sodium levels. My mother died from a massive stroke in '09 at age 73. But she had hypertension in the xtreme. All her life, along with migraines. Mine runs high occasionally, but I'm ok. Doc wanted me on meds, but I don't want them. After having to stay in the hospital for 4 extra days after having my son, that extraordinary BP came down and didn't recur like that again. I don't think my mom had any particular warning when hers hit. And we didn't find her for nearly the entire day. By then, she was mostly unconscious and bleeding from her mouth. She died that night with what the ER doctor said was one of the biggest strokes he'd ever seen (from the MRI or CAT scan). So, you just never know! Get thee to Theodoric of York!

Look closely. the belt runs between two sets of cones. By forcing the cones together or letting them move apart, the effective diameter of the contact circles of the belt can be varied, thus varying the "gear ratio". Throw in some electronics, and ... magic.

Turns out it has one of those automatic transmissions with the cute shifter you move in 3D (like this thing has -- http://tinyurl.com/lv634nq ), and when you just go down into D it's a regular automatic.....but when you bump it to the side where it has the vertically oriented "+ * -" symbols and the slot to move the handle between them, it will only shift when you tick it forward or back.

Took me a little bit to figure out that's what she'd done.

388 I have a new mazda 6 with a 6 speed manual. The one thing that was a shock was this weird hill assist thing it has. It somehow senses that you may be starting on a hill and keeps the brakes applied for a split second until you start rolling. If you're good with a stick you never sense it working until you try to roll backwards with the clutch pushed in.

--------

In some cities there are 'Rent-A-Wreck' places that rent out older cars.
Maybe there is one where you are?

Just be straight with them, and tell them you'd like to learn how to drive a stick.
They might even throw in some instruction.

And yeah...the regular rental car agencies try to stock the most user-friendly types of cars, which means no-stick.

I learned to drive a stick shift on my first car, an old VW Bug, that I paid for with my babysitting money.

ugh.
for

Posted by: chemjeff at June 06, 2014 01:19 AM (9GG/0)

They only got more complicated on the inside. These days alot of cars have a sport mode which can either be paddle shifters on the steering wheel, or a "manual" ratchet shift option on the usual floor shifter. In the old muscle car days it was called his and hers, but now just about everything has that option. Either leave it in D, or go sport mode.

I drive a manual transmission car. I've always bought manual-transmission cars, as manuals have almost always been more reliable. This might be changing in the latest models, but I'll let others do the testing.

Driving a manual is easy. From a stop, push in the clutch pedal, put the transmission in neutral, start the car, select 1st, then give the engine a little gas as you slowly release the clutch.

This is one of the hard parts, but with a few day's practice, you will get the hang of this.

While driving, to change gears, let off the accelerator, push in the clutch, UP-SHIFT, release the clutch (not as slowly as from a stop) while giving the engine some more gas (if you hear the engine over-revving, ease up on the gas)

Downshifting is a bit of the reverse, but the car needs to slow down (brakes, or just let of on the accelerator), so that you can push in the clutch, downshift, then give the engine some gas so that it matches the (new) transmission speed.

If you car has a tachometer, most cars have shift points about 1200 rpm apart (1000-1500rpm), YOu can use the tachometer to gauge engine speed for shifting.

Finally, most manual transmission cars need the engine to be running at 2000 rpm when initially engaging the clutch from a stop. For most city driving situations, 2000-3500 rpm is all that's needed. Driving at 80 might be above 3500 rpm; it depends on the car.

A couple of things about manual transmissions: (1) they're predictable -- you know what you're going to get in the configuration you set up....where an auto can decide to shift for you right as the semi gets very large in your rear-view mirror. (2) They're reliable. (3) They're much less expensive to fix. (4) No matter how intellectual you or your instructor gets during the learning process, they're actually driven by feel and sound. Once you're practiced enough with 'em, you'll know when to shift based on what the car's doing and how it sounds doing it. And (5) it makes a car more "your car" when you drive a manual.

I come from the Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott school of "knowing how fast you are going by the vibration of the floor plates". I never use the tach. Seriously, I need a manual trans, its the difference between driving a car and sitting in it. 430 chemjeff, even an automatic should be driven in manual mode when going up and down steep mountain roads. You just don't have to deal with a clutch.

To learn to drive a clutch, the key is to find out where it begins to engage from fully depressed. So from a dead stop, you let it out slowly until it starts to 'catch', then depress fully and repeat. And repeat a bunch more. Once you've mastered one particular one, the next one doesn't take nearly as long to figure out.

434 Time for a mini rant. So, Australia can control over 16,000 miles of coastline from illegal invaders plus make sure that any that DO manage to slip through can't do a damn thing there but whine and leave.

The US, however, cannot patrol 3,000 miles of land border with even a pretense of effectiveness; then, we ship them around the country and help them to settle in all nice and cozy and permanently.

Now no one is surprised that TFG and Co. are interested in having this happen -- After all, the flood of new illegals is already starting to create a crisis; we know what they say about a crisis in Progland, it shouldn't go to waste. In Central America, papers are posting articles saying go to the US now; you will not be turned away. This crisis is purposeful and deliberate. Its goal is to force a rewriting of immigration laws.

What's really pissing me off is the Republican side is doing exactly nothing to put a stop to this. In other words, they are complicit and simpatico to this crisis continuing to pile up. Then they will claim they are forced by circumstances to act for amnesty.

We are, right now, being sold out by all our representatives in DC. It's a fact.

439 Tomorrow should be fun. A bunch of stuff got shoved around under the sink, so I got some leaks. Looks like the hot water connection and the trap. OK, fine, so I started taking the trap apart....and discovered the pop-up drain widget had two sections of pipe to it and those had been crossthreaded -- but "cured"with teflon tape. So, for the entire period of time we've owned the house, part of the sink plumbing was essentially tape.

Then we get to the real issue -- the upper part of the pop-up drain widget, the part with the flange in the basin of the sink and a nut below the sink to lock it in, is essentially welded together with corrosion and mineral deposits. I could not get it free, even bracing it against the cabinet (which lifted the sink).

So, tomorrow, the plan is to pull the entire sink out (the hot and cold water sources don't turn-off all the way, so I'll have to cut the water), take it outside, flip it over, give it one last college try at loosening the nut with a little English -- and, if that fails, use a Dremel to cut the nut apart. Once the old pop-up widget is gone, I need to evaluate the hot water feed (I strongly suspect the hose between the wall and the faucet is bad -- it doesn't look like the cold-water hose and has that certain '50s-vibe) and maybe do a run to the store to get a new one, but otherwise do a straight rebuild, this time using lovely plastic for the trap, so it doesn't bond to anything through electrolysis and deforms for a better seal if necessary.

One of the biggest problems with this house is maintaining the old stuff. They usually used quality products, but the fact is that the designed service-life of most home products is about 30 years.....and, for original installations in this house, that was 1985.

Assuming that you're using Windows, go to Control Panel/modify delete programs, and nuke it. In browsers, I'm generally running adblock+.....although there was a little scandal a while back when it was noted that a certain large percentage of AB+'s income was derived from Google paying for AB+ not to block sites otherwise suitable for blocking.

fly me out there & you'll have all the free labor you want! I can fix that in an hour, tops.

Did I ever tell you the story of how close I was to the Pacific ocean? I could literally hear it, but couldn't take the few extra steps to go see it with my own eyes. I hated that, but, no regrets.

448 I've noticed that the main page can be quite the resource hog for browsers. It might be the ads but even other websites with ads don't act like aces. It can consistently eat up more and more memory and run 10% of the processor continuously. With a mozilla based browser that seems to accumulate even more resources over time of running one session I can imagine it causing that kind of blow up.

I think we all suffer from that.
I had the pleasure of meeting a fellow moron Tuesday morning, and we took an hour or so to walk around downtown - something I never do.
I couldn't answer some of his most basic questions, but it made me research them, so I learned (or, re-learned) a little local history.

Because of that day, I think I'm going to go back downtown next week & do some of the tourist stuff again. Thanks, Jinx!

*Back on usual computer.....which is only about 10" to the right of the one before*

For weird historical reasons, I have three McAfee licenses essentially forever, so this computer, the computer to my left that I was just on, and the fiancee's main computer run McAfee. For the others.....and there are an embarrassing number of others even after I fobbed a dozen-or-so off on Merovign....I'm generally using the umbrella guys -- Avira free. The reason I'm using them is because a couple of years ago, they were highly-rated by Consumer Reports.

And that requires a weird segue about Consumer Reports. I was having an IRL discussion about them with Chi, and the fact is that I consider them pretty reliable....but only in an odd pocket. Let's take, for example, washing machines -- old-fashioned tub ones that the apoplectic tree-huggers of the left have managed to just about completely ban. Twenty years ago, CR ran a report and said, "these washing machines are good deals, and here's the dope on 'em" -- and I considered that to be the gold standard of solid info. Several years later, CR reported "the available ones all suck now because of water-saving BS" -- and that was good reporting, too.

There's an infamous case where they were evaluating showerheads, and they came up with "the best of the evaluated showerheads rated a clear A-, and the second-best was a C+ -- but when we looked into things further, the best one exceeded Federal water-flow standards and should not have been sold in the US and we've ratted them out to the appropriate agency." That started out as good reporting and veered into advocacy.

And, then, there's their infamous battle with Bose. For those of us who have been around a while, it is well-recognized that Bose 901s are unusual speakers -- capable of doing delightful things in the proper setting. But CR ran them through their standard battery of tests and started screaming "they're crap, they're crap, they're crap" at the top of their lungs. I should also point out that there is not a room in my house that I would consider appropriate to use 'em.

And that gets to the boundaries of CR's reviews. They create a model of "normal usage" that may not apply to you, and may be tinged with political correctness. They do purchase, anonymously, on the open market, products and subject them to a test-suite based on their modeled usage. And I believe they accurately report their results. But where their model differs from your expectations, or there is a depth to your expectations, or where you might want to intentionally misuse a product, or where there are personal preferences involved in evaluation......their recommendations should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

In other words, they're fine for evaluating dishwashing soap; less fine for dishwashers; questionable for tax software; and completely out-the-window for a masseuse.

When all is said and done, it will probably have taken me two hours to do the job.....plus the time I spent thinking it was the wrong thing, chasing the wrong symptom, trying to preserve shit I should have trashed, replacing shit I should have preserved after I trashed it, finding the damned tools, clearing out the workplace, putting things back together for the fiancee to powder her nose, blocking things off so the fiancee doesn't brush her teeth and spit into the workplace, looking for tools that don't locally exist 'cause I saw one once at my cousin's (the plumber) place.....or, maybe two days.

Contractors get a secret "free pass" when they can demo down to studs, because there's a whole lot of "we'll just tweak it" to work through before then.

If it's anything that can be used in more than one way, they'll pick the conventional way and ignore the versatility to use it in other ways. Their input can be useful (but not definitive) for more complex things -- for instance, they pointed out that the TV we most recently bought was a champ for viewing off-axis .....and so it is. Their input for things never meant to be used conventionally is counterproductive. And their input for complex, learning, adaptive things (e.g. computers)......LOL, WUT?

I also think they provide an extremely valuable service in evaluating cars. While we can drive 'em all different ways to all different places, their test suite is a good benchmark to start with.

And it's not "comfort", it's "practice". It's still unnatural and feels, oddly, demeaning. But it's what she prefers, so I will endeavor to please her.

I think that's the only one.

I'd love to predict Father's Day -- the 15th -- but the reports of Mrs. Crank stirring around make that seem unlikely. I'm thinking....Monday, June 9.
