Whoopsidaisy! Most Competent Administration In History Accidentally Outs CIA Station Chief in... Kabul

Oh well, it's not like Kabul is a dangerous place in which to be outed as the CIA's Top Spy.

The CIA’s top officer in Kabul was exposed Saturday by the White House when his name was inadvertently included on a list provided to news organizations of senior U.S. officials participating in President Obama’s surprise visit with U.S. troops.

Surprise! I just gave your name to Al Qaeda!

The White House recognized the mistake and quickly issued a revised list that did not include the individual, who had been identified on the initial release as the “Chief of Station” in Kabul, a designation used by the CIA for its highest-ranking spy in a country.

OMG.

No one compiling this list or disseminating it knew, I guess, what "Chief of Station" means, nor bothered to ask anyone what it meant.

The disclosure marked a rare instance in which a CIA officer working overseas had his cover — the secrecy meant to protect his actual identity — pierced by his own government. The only other recent case came under significantly different circumstances, when former CIA operative Valerie Plame was exposed as officials of the George W. Bush administration sought to discredit her husband, a former ambassador and fierce critic of the decision to invade Iraq.

As Althouse points out, this version of the Plame Affair -- the passive-voice version of it favored by the leftwing media -- is designed to obscure the fact that it was Iraq War opponent and general friend of progressive reporters Richard Armitage who blabbed about this.

Back to the story. After distributing the list of people to six thousand reporters, someone asked the press office: Did you really intend to out the Station Chief?

Initially, the press office raised no objection, apparently because military officials had provided the list to distribute to news organizations. But senior White House officials realized the mistake and scrambled to issue an updated list without the CIA officer’s name. The mistake, however, already was being noted on Twitter, although without the station chief’s name.

Even when asked about it, they remained inalert to the problem of outing the CIA station chief.

It is unclear whether the disclosure will force the CIA to pull the officer out of Afghanistan.

Please, of course it will. He's now on every troublemakers' Must Kill or Kidnap list.

Of course, we expect the press office English Majors to be idiots about counterterrorism.

You know who's also idiots about counterterrorism, though? The State Department's Counter Terrorism Bureau, that's who.

he State Department’s Counter Terrorism (CT) Bureau apologized on Tuesday for promoting a controversial Muslim scholar whose organization has reportedly backed Hamas and endorsed a fatwa authorizing the murder of U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

The apology came on the heels of a Friday Washington Free Beacon report detailing the CT Bureau’s promotion of Sheik Abdallah Bin Bayyah, the vice president of a radical Muslim scholars group that was founded by a radical Muslim Brotherhood leader who has called “for the death of Jews and Americans.”

Bin Bayyah himself is one of several clerics who endorsed a 2004 fatwa, or religious order, endorsing the killing of U.S. soldiers fighting in Iraq.

I guess it asks too much of Obama's Best and Brightest that the Counter Terrorism Bureau should know which radical clerics have called for the death of American soldiers.

4 Interesting language in how FoxNews is covering this.

Baier has repeated several times how the White House accidentally revealed the name of the "top man" in Afghanistan.

Pretty sure that's purposefully misleading on FoxNews part. Understandable. But kinda weird.

13 By the way, and I can say this now because I'm never going back there again, but I knew Valerie Plame when she was working on counterproliferation issues at the CIA and she was a vacuous, Peter Principle'd hack working a job with legacy cover (as opposed to true non-diplomatic cover) long before she became a household name. She was a housecat -- never going to leave Northern Virginia again.

Meanwhile, our station chief in Kabul has basically had his career abroad torpedoed, and we just lost an important ground asset. It's a real pisser.

But, when he used that, they charged him with perjury because he "should have remembered that".

45 Here's a question I suspect I know the answer to.

What would the Obama Administration have to do for the media to stop covering for him? Spying on the Press didn't do it. Leaving Americans to die and lying about a YouTube video (to influence an election) didn't do it. Weaponizing the IRS (something Nixon was only ACCUSED of, by the way) didn't do it.

If Obama actually MURDERED someone with his own girly hands, would that do it? And yes, I remember the Onion piece from a few years back.

I mean, I know the media has absolutely no shame, no morals, and no intellectual honesty, but do they really lack a survival instinct, too?

95 Obama learned the name of the Kabul station chief the same way that al Qaeda did, by reading it in the newspaper.

Obama didn't know his name before this incident, and he doesn't know it now. Obama doesn't "do" briefings. He skips them. If he says this man's name in public, it'll be because he read it from a TelePrompter screen.

Yea, I was kidding. It seems every time some scandal comes out Obama claims he is shocked and found out about it the same way everyone else did, by reading it in the papers.

I have no doubt Karzi is cooperating with the Taliban and other assorted scum in Afghanistan. He's always been a scumbag.

But if you were trying to survive in the middle east these days who would you side with, Obama or the terrorists? Hell, Obama announces the date when we are leaving, the terrorists aren't going anywhere.

Uh, no...

Look at print media, any of it.

Read a newspaper recently or looked for a lot of them that have gone to three times a week including the Sunday edition, or have just folded completely?

Magazines survive only in the grocery store check out lines where the LIV's evidently get all their information.

How's about the broadcast media? I haven't been paying any attention to them in forever and I'm not alone. Arbitron ratings show a continued decline. Even Cable news is a parody of what it was 10 years ago.

I wouldn't count on seeing this anywhere other than sites that are concerned about information like this affecting the country. The rest of the media will continue its hand waving about the topic of the day to gloss over the failings of their messiah and his bumbling acolytes.

Expose who, in what and where? Just another day in the land of incompetent foreign policy and leadership.

Haven't you ever read a spy novel? It's about more than just killing the Station Chief. In fact, that's probably the least important aspect.

If you know who the head intel honcho is, you can build up a lot of knowledge about the whole intel contingent in-country by examining things like who he meets, both in the embassy and out, patterns of movement etc. And that gets you info on informants and Afghan intel assets.

Plus, the knowledge you glean about embassy personnel can be sold or traded to other intel services/terror orgs.

Well, I'm not a Vietnam vet, and I haven't been to that country in peacetime, either. I have heard that they generally have a positive opinion of Americans today, and that American visitors are treated well.

We fought a bloody war against the Germans and Japanese, but we certainly have more positive feelings towards each other today than we did 70 years ago. America was prepared to go to their aid during the Cold War.

We also fought a couple of wars against England, but today we are close allies. (Or at least we were before Obama came along.)

I'm not trying to be a Pollyanna and say "time heals all wounds", but it kinda sorta does. And China seems more likely than Vietnam to be an adversary going forward.

Obviously Vietnam War veterans will tend to have a more jaundiced view of the Vietnamese. My dad was a WWII vet, and to his dying day never ever considered buying a German or Japanese car.

...since al-Qaeda is the Obama administration's ally? US Military (CIA) trained...or something...

Reliable in all the WRONG ways counting everything bound to blow up in US face.

Obama Doctrine: SPILL THE BEANS /guts 'n glory

Good thing there's never any such thing as a conspiracy, just theorists...

How now brown cow -- where's the blonde CIA non-operative bimbo's outrage at an agent's outing? And Obama wants Scooter Libbey to know, "I feel your outrage."

272 Whoever compiled the list, whoever was responsible for editing it, and whoever was responsible for sending it, all these people, they will remain anonymous, and protected.

The Palace Guard will see to it this flub gets buried.

273 C'mon you racists.....we have important science fairs and maybe I'll buy some shrimp later. C'mon leave me alone! Can't a guy just eat his waffle!

Whiny Precedent.

Did anyone ask Colin Powell why he kept his mouth shut while Libby was twisting in the wind that it was his own deputy that blabbed Super-Secret Non-Spy ValPlames name? No? Shocking.

274 At least the guy can leave Afghanistan. Too bad for all the locals who were working for him however.
That is the real tragedy.
All because of the incompetence of the administration and the singular criteria of loyalty to Obama above all other skills and talents and brains by which his co-incompetents were chosen; all of the the lives of our real Afghan friends and their families are now in real danger.

275 Just a little more than 4 years since ANOTHER Hall 0f Fame Intel f@ck-up in Afghanistan lead to the blowing up of 8, count em, 8 CIA officers at an less-than-optimal debriefing.

Now this.

Ya know, it's real easy to PRETEND LIKE YOU'RE TRYING, yet "honestly screwing up," when in fact you're playing for the other team.

276 This was no more a mistake than it was when SEAL Team 6 was outed.

277 If The Three Stooges were in office I sincerely believe that we would have at best a fifty-percent chance of improvement over our National Affairs.

I think you've got something there, darlin' . . . this is simply unconscionable. Even ineptitude can't wash the stain out of what they did here.

If you think this is a mistake, you're retarded.
If you work at Langley and have a parking sticker, you're NOT undercover. You can video anyone coming or going. It would be nice if the media could pull their heads from their behinds. Americans would be shocked if they knew how many "journalists" took checks from the KGB. Ukran's "civil war" and Ukran's Facist are part of Putin's press at work.
