Memorial Day Morning Open Thread

"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. 31 Today I remember Maj. Howard W. Beal, born in Bangor, Maine in 1869, graduated Harvard Medical School in 1898, served in the Spanish-American War and continued as an Army surgeon for a few years after the war. At the beginning of WWI he left his medical practice in Boston and sailed to England on the first Red Cross ship in September 1914. In England he was appointed the director and chief surgeon of the American Women's War Hospital in Paington. He returned to the US in November 1914 and remained in the Medical Reserve Corps. When the United States entered the war, Beal was commissioned a Major and called into service, leaving the US on August 9, 1917. He first served as a surgeon in Paris, but requested an assignment near the front, where he served as chief of the 1st Surgical Division, 6th Field Artillery. Maj. Howard W. Beal was wounded by a bomb on July 18, 1918 and died two days later.

Howard W. Beal was married, but had no children, so there are few alive today who will remember him despite there being at least one school named for him in Massachusetts. I became aware of Maj. Beal when I found a slim, leather-bound book on my grandparents' bookshelves. After his death, a group of his friends collected his letters to his wife, had them privately published, and gave copies to his friends, one of which found its way to my grandparents. Maj. Beal is buried in France.

32 Happy Memorial Day morons. My grandmother had ten days with her husband before he left for the Army Air Force in WW2, forgoing conscientious objector status. He trained as a navigator, was shot down and killed over Germany. RIP.

A few years later, she married a veteran from the Army Engineers--my grandfather.

34 My son was altar server for 6:30 am Mass this morning. The priest, a former Marine, read Peter Collier's letter (from the WSJ) about Memorial Day, as the homily.
Collier- forgive if I've misspelled; haven't had time to verify name- wrote a book about Medal of Honor recipients.
It was a privilege to be there and to pray for our soldiers.

48 A day for folks like me who never served to just say, thanks.

I was 2-S 'til I dropped out of college, then "won" the draft lotteries.

One of the first things I did at college in 1970 was research how in heaven America had got embroiled in Viet Nam. No web. Library books and microfilche. (I was an idiot, too; I could've got a course credit for the work I did on my own.) Walter Cronkite had confused me. I needed to know more. I was surprised, for example, to find our involvement went back to Truman.

I never sided with the anti-war crowd, despised the ones who spit on vets, and wondered why Jane Fonda wasn't hung, but I didn't think the war or the draft were being run sensibly. I still think the same way, especially, why would you be in a fight if not to win?

I missed "my" war. I'm not all that disappointed, as I probably would've sneezed in the jungle and given our position away. There were no men raising me, certainly not any who would suggest the military might be a good idea. Can't say as I raised my sons to sign up, either, although I can see how both might have benefited. But I have taught them Respect, I hope.

Almighty Commander of the Legions of Heaven, save our country, correct replace our misguided representatives, enshrine Constitutional Republicanism in the hearts of the citizenry, protect liberty's defenders, and make their assigned missions rare, just, and swiftly won.

Elliot Rodger's Roommates Identified
On May 23, Elliot stabbed Cheng Yuan Hong, 20; George Chen, 19; and Weihan Wang, 20. They were all his roommates who were found dead with multiple stab wounds when police arrived.

The 22-year-old was living with them at the Independent Living Institute in Santa Barbara, according to CBS. According to the site, it "serves handicapped, developmentally delayed, and under-educated individuals in the areas of independent living, academics and vocational skills."

In my weak mind, the sickness is that way less than 1% served since 9-11. I think it is way to easy to 'do' war when the entire country isn't involved in the effort. Bush made a conscious decision that the country should be in a state of normalcy after 9-11 and during the wars. I don't think this is how it should be. If it is important enough for the country to engage in war then the country should be engaged. That kind of commitment would keep us out of conflicts we shouldn't be in and would hopefully bring to bare the resolve to actually defeat the enemy. That is all that wrong, but it is an element, I think.

ExSnipe - hi there and I didn't realise that the aircraft carrier Melbourne had been in a collision with an American ship in 1969

In 1964 the Melbourne hit the destroyer Voyager off the NSW coast and 82 people, all from the Voyager were killed

There was a lot of controversy about that incident with two Royal Commissions and lots of books written - including one I picked up at a book sale a few weeks ago "Breaking Ranks" by Peter Cabban and David Salter

I don't think he ever apologized for it or responded to it in any way. I know I've insulted people unjustly before and I've subsequently spared no effort to apologize for it; it may not make it right but it's an acknowledgment that I fucked up.

My dad was an authentic hero in WWII, he saw plenty of action culminating in spending three nights working his way through enemy lines at the Battle of the Bulge where he froze his legs. How he survived that was heroic enough, but I won't bore you.

After several years of an already unpopular war in Vietnam, when I received my draft notice, my mother wanted me to go to Canada. My dad had a heart to heart with me and convinced me to go.

My father was the best man I have ever known and I miss him dearly, especially on days like this.

I freely admit that I no longer love this country as much as my father did.

I pointed out that Lincoln's number one priority was saving the union, and in his speech, there was no bitterness or calls for revenge, no painting of the enemy as an enemy.

I also pointed out that when the speech was given (Nov. 19, 1863), no one knew for sure how or when the war would end.

The only way students can revere the past is our teaching them to do so.

On our last trip the US...

Our visit to Arlington Cemetery was a highlight in our trip to Washington DC

There weren't too many people there so we had a good view of the ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and we were impressed by the peaceful surrounds - just a few kms from all the noise of a big city

We could have spent many hours there - but we were on a strict timing thing so we could see Alexandria as well in daylight

Our next trip will include a few of the Civil War sites

In honor of Ricky Palmer Mattern who died on 3 Sept 1967 when the right cargo door on the UH-1 he was piloting on approach at 800' detached and flew upward destroying the rotor system.


Upon arrival in country, Ricky told our Flight Surgeon Dr. Marvin Marchman (deceased) he wasn't going to complete the tour. Marvin told Ricky to buck-up and do the job he was paid to do and not dwell on possibilities. Three months into his tour, Marvin and the CO, Lt. Col Howard Hostler (deceased) agreed Ricky should proceed on Rest and Relaxation early, and he went to Hawaii to visit his wife and son.


Within a few weeks of returning, he was again telling the Flight Surgeon he wasn't going to complete the tour. He was killed at the six month level vs the normal one year rotation.


God Bless all the children of veterans killed in the line of duty

Went to the GA Moron Meet Saturday night. Had a great time, met some fine Rons and an Ette. Got home about 3:30 after calling a service to drive both you and your car home as I was in.......Suboptimal condition.

As we pulled up to the house, 2 PoPo cars with lights on were in front of it. Turns out my Roommates sister, who has been staying with us for a few nights (1.5 months and counting) had lost her shit after having a screaming fight with her now ex boyfriend in my yard. Dealing with PoPo in suboptimal condition as the homeowner is not an experience I would recomment to the community. 3 of my Neighbors stopped by this morning for explanations after I got to bed at 6:00 a.m. Sister will be leaving Tuesday, whether she wants to or not. Getting too old to deal with this shit.

227 So here in Texas (at least Houston), school is in session as a makeup day. Obviously, we would be depriving our children of the wonderful gift of education if they had one less day of school. Make up days are pretty much dumb if you ask me, but especially if it occurs on Memorial Day. Too many parents and teachers just went along with this silly idea because they were told. If enough parents kept their kids home today (as I would have), then the schools would stop this nonsense of stupid make up days that have the only purpose of complying with an arbitrary law regarding the number of days children must be indoctrinated. No sane person can honestly think our children are better off from an educational perspective by being in school today. I'd argue they are worse off because this is less time spent with family.

Boiled down, he's saying they fought for the rights of the People, which is true on the Southern side. The North fought for replacing those rights with Federal sovereignty, which he as much admits with the "new birth" usage.

No there wasn't any specific rancor in the speech but every action thereafter contradicts that.

My kids are not school age yet, but this really ticks me off because it is just a microcosm of a lot of things wrong with this country. An arbitrary law imposed by the state on the local communities that does not allow the local community to use any of its own common sense as to whether it makes any sense to have one or two extra days for the sake of education. A citizenry that mindlessly goes along with a silly idea because the schools simply told them. No one is exercising any common sense here. The class that really suffers is the class that this is being imposed on. Rather than have a day off with family running around, observing Memorial Day (in whatever manner the family wishes to observe), the children are spending a summer day sitting in a classroom with teachers who probably want to be there even less. What a waste of time and resources.

Another alternative is the Epic browser, which has its own built-in search engine that does not keep track of your searches.

I've been using Epic for a month or two and I like it. The only problem I've found is that embedded videos don't work on some sites. That's probably a plugin problem that I haven't been able to figure out yet. Videos work fine here and I have no trouble with YouTube.
