Of Course: Anti-Weapon Crusaders Force North Dakota College's Fencing Team Off Campus

They're doing this for your own benefit, you know.

“The current interpretation of the non-weapon policy [at] NDSU . . . understands our fencing equipment as weapons,” the club’s coach told Valley News Live, meaning that use or possession of the swords is prohibited and the club will have to find a home off campus.

It's a new club, which is irrelevant. More relevant is the fact that none of the weapons used in fencing has an edge because, you know, this is a sport, not Game of Thrones.

The fencing club tried to argue that baseball bats were more serious weapons than a fencer's slender, flexible, ball-tipped sport foil, and that argument was rejected by the college, for the usual reason: Because it's True, and colleges are now officially opposed to things that are true.

Glenn Reynolds writes that colleges have become jokes.

Even fancy schools such as Harvard and Dartmouth have seen applications decline, with Dartmouth's dropping 14% last year, a truly staggering number.

It's no picnic for public institutions either. "There have been 21 downgrades of public colleges and universities this year but no upgrades," reported Inside Higher Ed. It's gotten so bad that schools are even closing their gender studies centers, a once-sacrosanct kind of spending.

....

From the economics to the politics, colleges and universities are looking less like serious places to improve one's mind and one's prospects, and more like expensive islands of frivolity and, sometimes, viciousness. And that is likely to have consequences.

A Yale law professor penned a commencement address even though no one asked him to:

And, before I go any further, I would like to express my personal thanks to all of you for not rescinding my invitation. I know that matters were dicey for a while, given that I have held and defended actual positions on politically contested issues. Now and then I’ve strayed from the party line. And if the demonstrators would quiet down for a moment, I’d like to offer an abject apology for any way in which I have offended against the increasingly narrow and often obscure values of the academy.

In my day, the college campus was a place that celebrated the diversity of ideas. Pure argument was our guide. Staking out an unpopular position was admired -- and the admiration, in turn, provided excellent training in the virtues of tolerance on the one hand and, on the other, integrity.

Your generation, I am pleased to say, seems to be doing away with all that. There’s no need for the ritual give and take of serious argument when, in your early 20s, you already know the answers to all questions. How marvelous it must be to realize at so tender an age that you will never, ever change your mind, because you will never, ever encounter disagreement! How I wish I’d had your confidence and fortitude. I could have spared myself many hours of patient reflection and intellectual struggle over the great issues of the day.

...

The literary critic George Steiner, in a wonderful little book titled "Nostalgia for the Absolute,” long ago predicted this moment. We have an attraction, he contended, to higher truths that can sweep away complexity and nuance. We like systems that can explain everything. Intellectuals in the West are nostalgic for the tight grip religion once held on the Western imagination. They are attracted to modes of thought that are as comprehensive and authoritarian as the medieval church. You and your fellow students -- and your professors as well; one mustn’t forget their role -- are therefore to be congratulated for your involvement in the excellent work of bringing back the Middle Ages.

17 And then you have the usual suspects pushing for colleges to use lower evidentiary standards when adjudicating sexual assault cases. And you have me wondering how a system that is supposed to be dealing with plagiarism, roommates who don't get along, and people too loud late at night finds itself adjudicating felonies based upon what grant of authority from the state?

18 "You'll put your eye out!"

Now is probably a humorous time to note that we kept airsoft guns in our dorm rooms in college.

Construction worker left a soda cup on a transformer one day so we shot through it out the window.

That was only 10 years back.

Now I'd probably be killed by a swat team.

(In fairness I don't know if the RA's knew we had the airsoft guns, we tried to keep it quiet.)

Also, pencils, pens, and similarly pointy objects are prohibited. Only large, wide crayons are permitted on campus.

122 My high schooler and I spent Sunday evening at an admissions event featuring Harvard, Duke, Georgetown, Penn and Stanford. They mentioned all the great clubs available, like a grilling club at Georgetown and a bagpipe club at Penn. they mentioned e great histories of the institutions...established by Ben Franklin, buildings designed by this or that architect, founded in 17-whatever. They mentioned the great living experiences in the on campus residential areas and hip college towns. The fun opportunities to spend semesters overseas. But only Duke (research triangle) and Stanford (Silicon Valley) put a real emphasis on the learning opportunities. The rest, even Harvard, seemed all about advertising themselves as a cool place to hang out the next for to seven years, and how much of the cost could be subsidized with grants, scholarships and loans.

I will say Stanford and Duke impressed. The presenter from Georgetown made it quite clear her school was the place to go if your goal was to rub elbows with powerful politicians, score internships with Senators and lobbying firms, and attend events with famous actors.

128 The current interpretation of the non-weapon policy [at] NDSU . . .

This shit drives me up the wall.

Here's what they just said: "We have decided that our previous decision to ban weapons should also cover fencing foils."

But being cowardly bureaucrats loathe to take responsibility for their own actions and decisions, they couched their decision in language meant to give the impression that their hands were tied. Not up to them, just following "policy".

See, their decision wasn't really a subjective opinion for which they can be criticized, it was an "interpretation". And their "non-weapon policy" itself wasn't a decision they freely undertook, it's "policy" of indeterminate origin.

There's no need for the ritual give and take of serious argument when, in your early 20s, you already know the answers to all questions. How marvelous it must be to realize at so tender an age that you will never, ever change your mind, because you will never, ever encounter disagreement! How I wish I'd had your confidence and fortitude. I could have spared myself many hours of patient reflection and intellectual struggle over the great issues of the day."

Baloney.

There is no argument or debate in having 300 adults sit on a lawn in metal folding chairs hearing a career civil servant or author talk at them for twenty minutes. If any of them did try to debate that guy, they will be imprisoned. Debate is the last thing they want.

There's no real substance to any of these speeches. That's why they aren't bound and published annually for the greater glory of the speakers. That's why the faculty doesn't try to actually teach by having people audit speeches.

The reality is that the con of university is enhanced by having the annual tuition of two or three or ten students thrown at a VIP to come and talk down to grown adults about the meaning of life. Without these trappings of pomp and ceremony, the students might see through the pretense that they are children. They might realize they're customers, buying a product on credit, and being given every opportunity to be sold a pig in a poke if they don't squawk about it.

Any soft, round squishy thing is also banned due to its resemblance to a nerf ball.

This is in addition to the banning of all edged or hard objects.

Consequently, campus is now an Object-Free Zone.

Any student who brings to the OFZ any item that contains mass, or which has substance, onto campus, shall be expelled.

Molecular detectors have been installed at all entrances.

Oldest son, 11 years old, is really starting to think about what he wants to do. He's precocious, yeah, but it's getting me thinking.

I just can't feel right about sending him to colleges like this. He's a bright kid, kicks my ass with math, and I see a lot of "engineer" in him, but what's the point if he's going to go to some overpriced indoctrination facility?

On the other hand, I mention things like trades (you can make a seriously kick-ass living as a plumber) and he's mildly interested but in that "OK Dad, just to shut you up I'll politely listen..." He wants to build things. He's good at building things.

He's also the wrong gender and the wrong color, according to the Statists. Not sure if he'd even succeed in college with the Lefty shitheads setting him up to fail out of revenge for perceived historical slights.

Sword can't jam or run out of ammo, and a good one will make a worse wound than most bullets. Obviously gun has range going for it, but as far as weapons go, you could definitely do worse than a sword at close range.

None of which has any bearing on the fact that fencing foils not only aren't swords, but the swords they simulate (ie rapiers) were largely obsolete by the 19th century even as fighting implements.

This is the most depressing fact in the entire country.

I know, from up-lcose personal obsrvation and experience, that MOST - -not some, but MOST -- of the people on "Disability" are scammers and malingerers. But they get lifetime support WITH THE COLLUSION OF FEDERAL WORKERS who help "folks" sign up for disability. There is essentially no filter.

Are you ready for this: I know someone personally who gets lifetime lavish disability benefits. Essentially, he lives on government handouts. What is his "disability"? He walked into the office, totally healthy, and asked to get signed up for the program. The worker plied him with questions, with no success, until the question of past employment came up. It turns out that the status of "not having a job for the last five years" qualifies you as being officially classified as "unemployable" -- and "unemployable" is an official criteria which ranks you as permanently "disabled."

When my acquaintance pointed out that he had worked at some points during the previous five years. the federal employe guiding him through the application simply pointed out that all he needed to do was not mention his employment, and he was guaranteed to get Disabled status.

In other words, she encouraged him -- forced him, actually -- to cheat, in a system that is already lax and corrupt to the nth degree.

And what what I see, hear and observe, vast sectors of the population qualified for "disability" with the same level of fraud and collusion.

It has just become a universal form of extra welfare for the unethical.

Not if your school is already accredited. Open an Olympic biathlon training program. Start up fencing, wrestling, weightlifting, marital arts programs.

Start up a school sponsored firearms training coupled with a strong law school program in constitutional law.

We have two(?) civilian schools with a strong military history, military science curriculum. (VMI, and)

It depends on your kid. Often the Ivy kid will get the nod, but if your kid graduates well and is willing to work his way up, he'll land on his feet.

Take me- officially I guess I'm a "college drop out" who, through gumption and hard work is a software developer for a multi-national specialty retailer. If your kid can take that "gumption and hard work" and add "Magna-cum-Laude in Engineering" to it, he'll be far better off than I am far faster.

But the problem is that no school wants to do that (or too few do). My point was that, to fill that niche, you'd basically have to start up a new school.

Though there are some that are still sane-ish. Texas A&M, for instance, or any of the Military schools. Basically any school with a strong ROTC program is probably a good bet.

298 As a relatively conservative tenured professor at a large regional university, I am not surprised by this at all.

First, consider where all of the administrators come from--faculty and staff are often hired on the basis of the perceived prestige of their college. These schools are unswervingly leftist in policy and education. If they come from a non-prestige school, then these individuals try even more to emulate the attitudes and mindset of what they perceive as elite opinion.

Second, those few conservatives who survive graduate school (that is overwhelmingly populated by the left) learn to operate in silent mode in order to get a job. Same is true for apolitical and effective administrators. We just want to be left alone to accomplish our tasks.

Thus, even those professors and administrators who possess common sense are loathe to threaten their jobs and working conditions by challenging brain dead administrative actions that do not directly affect them that reify leftist notions of how the world should work. Such activists pushing these agendas are vicious and take no quarter--false allegations, ostracism, cuts in funding opportunities, travel, etc. and no less than personal attacks, vandalism are all used as weapons in this uncivil age.

Even my university which is in a considerably conservative area has increasingly adopted policies and positions that echo those of the more "elite" institutions. For that reason and some others such as the decline in reading ability of students, I am pessimistic about the future--both for personal reasons and for the U.S. in general.

All too often this is true. Until you have enough experience that they care about that more than your degree.

Which is where apprenticeships can be nice, depending on how they're set up. If you "apprentice" for 3 years, that's 3 years' experience on your Resume. That will at least get you a phone-screen in just about any IT shop in the country.

Exactly. Most "disabled" people I know of are overweight.

Sorry, being overweight is not a disability. Eat less, move more. There is no excuse to subsidize 10,000 calories per day and sedentary behavior on taxpayer dollars.

The same goes for paying for lap band and similar surgeries. Further, everyone I know who's ever had lap band or similar surgery ends up being as big as a house again inside of 1-3 years, once they stretch their stomach out again. If your weight can be controlled by a lap band, then it can be controlled by self discipline. Guess which is more effective?

Yeah, I know that there are some overweight people who have legitimate medical issues that cause their weight problem. Fine. Let the medical issue be the criteria for disability, not weight.

Even my university which is in a considerably conservative area has increasingly adopted policies and positions that echo those of the more "elite" institutions. For that reason and some others such as the decline in reading ability of students, I am pessimistic about the future--both for personal reasons and for the U.S. in general.

Look at it this way- the status quo is unsustainable. At some point (how soon we don't know) a whole lot of people are going to find themselves in a position where the Gravy Train they've come to rely on is no longer delivering on time.

Who would you rather be- a dependent who suddenly finds himself without a benefactor, or someone who can take care of themselves independently?

373 North Dakota State University students who are hunters soon will have a secure place on campus to store their guns and bows.
NDSU on Thursday is opening a storage site for weapons and ammunition for use by on-campus student residents.
University Police and Safety Office Director Ray Boyer said the campus has a "no weapons" policy, but that the storage site will be for students who want to hunt or target practice off campus on weekends or when they are not in class.
Boyer said right now, students sometimes place hunting equipment in their locked cars in campus parking lots. He said that practice becomes a safety issue if a vehicle is burglarized. The storage site will be mandatory.
