Bob Owens: An Open Letter To A Hack Journalist

As we related on the NRA Annual Meeting podcast episode, Bob Owens, John E. and I had a discussion there with a tech journalist who was working on a piece about "smart guns".

Based on the journalist's (using that term loosely) tweets before the meeting ...

... I guess I'm not really surprised at the final product he turned in. Despite John and me both witnessing exactly what Owens describes in his post, it seems that Levine just couldn't find anyone who didn't go for his jugular at the mere mention of the term "smart gun".

A very interesting article, Yasha… and a very interesting bit of selective memory.

As I recall, I spoke to you for 30 minutes in the press room about “smart guns,” along with Andy and John from Ace of Spades.

That conversation even made it into a mention of their podcast.

You wanted to talk about “smart guns,” and how in your view, the industry and the NRA are against them.

I explained that very few of people who I know in the industry (and being the editor of an industry news site, I know a few) are against the concept of so-called “smart guns.” What we are against is the mandating of the technology, especially when it is still incredibly new and dangerously unreliable.

...

Read the whole thing and then, knowing what really happened, follow Owens' link to the piece-of-shit article Levine turned in.

He got the story he set out to get, truth and facts be damned. His publication's readers now have their stereotypes reinforced thanks to this bit of dishonesty, and one of the publication's investors now has a ready-made excuse for why he can't find his "Zuckerberg of guns".

[Update JohnE.]: I just have to quote this amazing paragraph from his article:

He thought the NRA was a harmless gun trade/lobby outfit, and didn’t seem to realize that it was much more than that: a cultural nexus for some of the most toxic politics in America: rabid xenophobia, racism, longing for a purer past, the glorification of extrajudicial justice against a creeping threat from within… tendencies that are not all that different than the bile that brought Hitler to power, I might have pointed out.
#NailedIt!

[Update2 JohnE.]: Just in case you weren't convinced this guy was a dim-witted hack yet, from his original article:

A free market investment into a tech that will be required by law by the government. Brilliant. You can’t think of a better business climate.

Gee. Why would I be skeptical of a government mandate for a smart gun? It's a mystery.

16 The primary beneficiary of smart guns would be police officers, who are probably the most at risk of being assaulted or killed with their own weapons. After they have tested this for twenty or so years I will be willing to think about it for myself. (Probably not for very long - but on the other hand I'll be seventy, so I'll mostly be yelling, "Get off my lawn!!")

Why don't we have some kind of call center where citizens call in to the Fed, reporting an in-progress assault / robbery / what have you, requesting permission to activate their weapon to defend themselves.

I mean, really, let's just full-bore with the damn thing.

Private Citizen John Doe, requesting authorization for deadly force and the unlocking of my SmartGun.

Standby, citizen, we're turning you over to the D.C. Division for authorization. Don't worry, these guys know their stuff. They handled the authorization of force for the Benghazi incident.

I think that any smart gun should be tested by the professionals. After the police are armed with smart guns and are happy with them for 5-10 years, then they should be allowed to be used by everyone else.

After all, who uses their guns more, the police or normal people? And police need all the safety advantages of smart guns. They often end up scuffling with suspects. A smart gun would prevent their gun from being used against them. If smart guns are not safe enough for the police, then they are not safe enough for me.

not to sound dickish, but... how to put it... ok a story is best:

Rule #1: Know exactly where your weapons are

In ranger school, candidates are disqualified on the spot for safety, and the two quickest ways to get thrown out are to put your booger hook on the bang switch when not engaging or to lose track of your rifle.

Hell, forgetting to change mags prior to an assault will buy you an hour of upside down koala bear. (Invert, hug tree, don't let your brain bucket touch the ground)

The NCO's used to pull all sorts of stuff on the cadets going through their advance camp training and selection. Like reaching under toilet stalls to grab weapons while they were taking a shit, sneaking up behind them during meals if they had them leaning against a tree, etc. Made them think about weapon security a whole lot.

He knew well and good where it was until he passed out (it was a big deer and a steep ridge, and frankly he wasn't in the best of shape.)

There was also some miscommunication in there about who had his gun when we arrived to help him get the deer out of the ridge (Which took another hour or so.)

I'm not saying it wasn't a big mistake, indeed we all agreed in the chaos we screwed up big time (I also dropped a 3 round magazine I had in my overall pocket that I hadn't loaded into my rifle yet.)

I'm saying mistakes happen.

This was in ROTC during the summer inbetween the cadets' junior and senior year. I am using a Canon T3i, you can get one of these for under $1000 with a kit 18-55mm lens. It is more than sufficient for anything but the most demanding pro work. I have shot everything from portrait to hockey to ski jumping with mine, some of that work actually being published.

With lenses appropriate to the type of work you wish to do, you couldn't find a much better camera for the price.

I am not about to trust any technology over my own brain, and I am not about to allow the government to mandate it for me.

195 This is a big part of why problems persist with the press.

Bob Owens, Andy and a lot of the commenters here are blaming Yasha Levine for this article. For all we know, Levine may have written a totally acurate, fair and balanced piece for publication. As always, we on the right jumped to condemn Levine without knowing all the facts.

Regardless of Levine actually wrote, the blame for the article that appeared is held by Sarah Lacy. As the editor-in-chief, she is responsible for what ends up on her site. Critisism should be directed at her. By not holding the editor-in-chief accountable, the same scenario will play out again and again, no matter how many Levines come and go.

When we begin to focus ridicule on people like Lacy for publishing articles like this, we will begin the process of changing how lies are transmitted to the public.

BAKERSFIELD - A cat came to her best friend's rescue Tuesday when the young boy was attacked in his driveway in Southwest Bakersfield.

The surveillance video shows the boy playing on his bicycle when a dog sneaks up behind him and grabs his leg.

The family's cat, named Tara, rushes the attacking dog and chased it away.

The boy's mother told 23ABC the boy needed a few stitches, but he is doing fine this morning.

She also said the dog belonged to a neighbor and is now under observation.

23ABC will be hearing from the boy, the mother and the cat later in the day.

I did a Google search NEWS for "Sarah Palin". Top of the list was a Palin appearance at a Alabama high school commencment. Nothing on the first page about the Sasse win in NE. Then a search was performed for "Sarah Palin Sasse" Article count result: 685 At least the first four pages were solid Sasse - Palin.

Here we find that freedom of speech has been corrupted. We have a state answerable to Big Information, whose propagandists are steering the democratic process. The politicians have to please the propagandists.

Its more insidious than that.... as we see in California.

They are trying to do a number of things.

1. Make guns more expensive.
2. Make you register your 'new' gun.
3. Make it so only a very few gun manufacturers can play.
4. They will then make any NON Smart gun, illegal...

Its all about taking guns out of the hands of the Legal Populace.... so when the State Ends (as all states will)... they have a Monopoly on Violence so THEY will control what comes after.

power."

Oh well, I clicked the ad, listened to the promises of the Liberals and sent them an email address.

336 Well the point is that this Yasha guy is going to be a leftist prick no matter what. He isn't going to be contrite or remorseful that he wrote a stereotype-filled hackworthy screed against "the others". The people who write the paychecks though may not want to so closely associate themselves with such a direct anti-gun agenda. Sure just looking at Pando's investors page, they are all silicon valley tech geek type firms and people so they are probably on board the leftist anti-gun train too. But do they really want to so publicly declare such loud public support when it may affect their bottom lines? Most of those people are really in it just to make money, and the politics is just a sideshow. Once the politics starts affecting their ability to make money, I really doubt they will pick politics over money.

Ah, yes, the war between the states, the war of Northern Aggression.

You might have seen, I posted this the other day, having followed F. Bastiat's wiki entry to Molinari's.

Bastiat's Tomb: Bastiat died in Rome and is buried at San Luigi dei Francesi in the center of that city. He declared on his deathbed that his friend Gustave de Molinari (publisher of Bastiat's 1850 book The Law) was his spiritual heir.

"In his last work, published a year before his death in 1912, Molinari never relented:

The American Civil War had not been simply a humanitarian crusade to free the slaves. The war
"ruined the conquered provinces", but the Northern plutocrats pulling
the strings achieved their aim: the imposition of a vicious
protectionism that led ultimately "to the regime of trusts and produced
the billionaires."
[Molinari, before revisionism usurped words to convolute into opposite game antics to thwart language, learning, records, and communication.]

For those readers here uninitiated in French brilliance, remember Lafayette; read, live and learn of Jeffersonian-Jacksonian disciples abroad. I'm not alone unwilling to be represented by the likes of Yasha Levine in world opinion of Americans, after all.

The barrel bushing. It's not hard to do. Just a little practice and care with the plug to keep it from flying off into the sunset.
The older Series 70 type 1911's and copies do not have the block because the original design didn't have them either. The more modern 1911 re-designs have them on certain makes and models.

Posted by: EC at May 14, 2014 12:41 PM (GQ8sn)

Disassembly of a 1911 is a lot easier if you remove the slide stop first (pull the slide back about 1/8" first, push out the pin from the right side, release slide and it comes right off the frame). Once the slide assembly is off the frame, everything practically falls out for you.

You CANNOT make a 1911 discharge in the cocked and locked position by dropping it,

Don't take my word for it, Google it, and observe the inner workings.

There are 2 safety mechanisms utilized. Weapon can't discharge unless it's gripped in the firing position--exactly as one would to for real shoot it.

Yup, the p2000 doesn't get enough play, even in the spec ops community. The Group and Team guys tend to the 229.

Never had a malfunction that was the gun's fault in either. Kick ass pistols.

Call me old school but I also just love the fuzz out of an M9/beretta 92E. Lightweight, easy cleaning, intuitive takedown.

Most folks dont understand that when you're using any tool (guns included) constantly, rolling around in the mud, water, snow, sand; maintenance and reliability are the top factors. Not caliber or sexiness.

Posted by: tangonine at May 14, 2014 12:50 PM (x3YFz)

417 Of the 5 characteristics of a defensive weapon, 1-4 are reliability.

This is why "smart guns" are generations of technology away - if they will *ever* be viable.

I suspect they would only ever be viable under very limited circumstances, like prisons, which are controlled environments. Outside that, *by necessity* they are too vulnerable to failure.

In 200 years we may have electronics that are self-powering, resistant to EMP or outside signals, waterproof and temperature resistant, and so on.

On the other hand, we darned well better have light sabers, too.

419 372 The Cannon v Nikon debate.

A Cannon will blow a Nikon away every time. It's a big Iron thing that shoots cannon balls.

Canon is a company. Nikon uses Sony sensors. Nikkor builds lenses. I owned a studio for years, and we used nothing but Nikon and Nikkor for our 35mm work. Our forox animation stands used Nikkor lenses as well.

If you want to know what the pros think, next time you're watching a sporting event or a news conference, count the white lenses vs the black ones. I just use Canon for my own purposes now, the Nikon stuff is always having something happen to it. I've still got 2 Nikon bodies and half a dozen lenses.

Nikkor makes a few fantastic lenses. But Canon owns the market for telephoto and mid-range. I've got both. Canon ergonomics are superior, and most of their stuff is still built in Japan, not China or Indonesia. Nikon owns the megapixel race, no doubt. But if I'm recommending a prosumer camera I lean Canon - at least until Nikon solves their current QA problems (oil on sensors).

The new Sony A7r is pretty amazing too, but again some build and light-leak issues. With these you get a compact body and can use any lens you want - and astounding MP count.

441 329. noone, really: of the 100% Southerners,

"the fact that [only] 1.4% of Southerners owned slaves"

Source?

I wouldn't doubt that none of the poorest Southern whites had slaves. Some plantation owner elitists snobs would call them "poor white trash" for scratching out a subsistence living from the earth. [Same snob bigotry illustrated by Steinbeck, Grapes of Wrath, employed whites vs. unemployed and displaced whites. "Who'd wanna live like that?" "They just don't know better.") Truth be known/admitted, most white emigrants arriving on the American Continent were indentured servants (snobs would say "poor white trash" without discriminating necessarily between honest folk and scallywags), or indeed, very poor Scots/Irish starving and willing to sacrifice further for the chance to live in America, from humble beginnings.

But what source quotes as fact the figure of only 1.4% of white Southerners owning slaves?

I know that white Americans, North and South, of moderate income owned a slave, whether household duty or as in the Northern presidential candidate's father's household, labor for a Tavern. I linked that wiki topic source last month when mentioning it here, but would need to think longer than I care to recall the Northern politician's' name at the moment.

Seeing your reference, I just had to call you on your "fact" noone, really. 1.4%?

467 One simple simple "smartgun" question: What's the default failure mode? That is, in the event of a total ID-tech failure (e.g., dead battery), does the gun go BANG or not?

To put it bluntly, will a tech failure default to BANG (meaning the tech is useless and easy to circumvent), or default to NOT-bang (meaning the gun is inherently unreliable, therefore of not worthy of consideration for self defense, or any other high-value use)?

This fundamental design question must be answered before any specific technology can even be discussed, let alone getting to such thorny technical questions as "Can the fire/no-fire mode be controlled/selected/altered remotely, even theoretically, by anyone other than the primary operator?"

Lowering the voting age to 17.

Hell, I remember the protests swaying public opinion to give the legal right to vote, purchase and consume alcohol to those being drafted into the Viet Nam War. If they're old enough to die for our country, they're old enough to vote.

Were that the argument now, for lowering the voting age to that of minimal age to enlist in the US Military, the law should stipulate that military personnel have the legal right to vote regardless of the voter's age. It isn't as if 17 year old juvenile delinquents, thugs and illiterate junkies before they are legally adults deserve the right to vote consideration due to US Citizen Military Personnel.

But until our military personnel votes are actually counted within the tally prior to declaring the electoral victors, even that point of "right to vote" (age 1 did not mean the votes would be counted before election results were declared /"settled science"/.

Not. It defaults to no-fire mode.

I would suspect that number is by total population, not land area. You have to remember the slave market only worked when you had a lot of land.

Almost none in the Western parts of VA, NC, SC, GA. Not enough land to make their labor pay. Slaves were both capital and labor. You had to pay for them and feed them whether not you had a crop come in or not.

My family has been here for over 350 years. I did some research on Black migration in grad school and was going through the 1790 census books. UNC grad library was a copy. Of the 100 families with my last name, only one had slaves. We were poor I guess.

They were too expensive for most farmers. There is a paper somewhere, that I read in grad school, that tried to figure out the minimum land you needed to make a slave profitable. I go search some.

1968 Democrats: "We need to get guns out of the hands of the (mostly minority) poor; lets ban all cheap guns; call the 'Saturday Night Specials' or 'Junk Guns' to disarm the poor"

2014 Democrats: "Well we tried, that won't work again. Lets force really expensive additions to all guns; that'll get the (mostly minority) poor disarmed as well. Maybe people won't see we're doing the same thing for the same reason".

Same song, different verse... why should I pretend this is different?

Oh yes, they "Care" now... I forgot. And they're totally not racist while working to hurt the (mostly minority) poor... again.

492 Bonhomme-476: that's the usual response, but it leads directly to the questions "will it be used by the police, then? So self-defense isn't considered a legitimate reason to own/use a gun?"

Basically, adopting that position formally outs the statist as really not caring about the average person, and makes them explicitly claim that police are "special" in a way that the typical "man on the street" will not be very comfortable with. It cuts to the heart of the cultural difference between "pro smartgun" and "anti smartgun" sides, even though the firearms-knowledge difference is already well-known and vast. It also acts to highlight their total ignorance of how technology actually works, and exposes their magical thinking.

502 My suggestion is that the NRA should publicly approach the New Jersey Legislature with a proposal that all police forces in the state must adopt 'smart' guns as their only weapons as soon as they are technically feasible.

This would be a tremendous help in developing smart guns, since 'all the police guns in New Jersey' delivers a pretty big market to the first developer.

Besides, I love the sound of crickets.

I mean even a committed delusional leftist, straight out of a leftist journalism school, could not possibly intentionally write something that comically atrocious, could they.

527 The economy is tougher than many of us realize or are willing to accept; this season's fall clothing line reflects a true sense of style that is economically viable. Any of the items listed above can be purchased at a variety of stores, within a large price range. This season's fashions are sturdier, more care friendly, and much easier this year to mix and match. As for the darker color palette? It's slimming, and not necessarily 'depressing' . You can add a splash of color with that chunky bracelet you found on Ebay or at KMart for a dash of color; long, strikingly beautiful earrings don't have to cost a fortune but can add that touch of glitz you love! Go for it, girl this fall's fashions are yours for the taking, no matter what your wallet or credit card statement tells you. There's something for everyone come September!
