"F*** the EU," Revisited

"F*** the EU," top State official Victoria Nuland said on a phone call.

This phone call had been covertly recorded by Russia and was then leaked to the press, which should have been a signal that Russia, at least, was taking this more seriously than Obama's team was.

The F-bomb is deployed because Nuland’s frustrated that the EU isn’t doing more to pressure Viktor Yanukovych, the Putin-backed Ukrainian president whose recent deal with Moscow instigated the last few months of protests.

Why wasn't the EU doing "more" to pressure Yanukovych, Putin's choice for President?

Here's the thing: Because the EU was thinking hard about the Ukraine and realistically about itself.

The EU didn't want to force Yanukovych out of power, nor encourage the Maidan movement to force him out of power, because they knew that Russia would react as Russia has in fact reacted.

And the EU knew this about themselves: They were not prepared to do a damn thing about a Russian invasion.

So the EU made a cynical, self-serving decision to not encourage or support the Maidan movement, because they knew they would not be doing anything down the road to support the Maidan movement when the movement actually needed support.

This was an unpopular decision, and it makes them seem cowardly and weak... but ti did have the benefit of comporting with reality.

The EU was clear-minded enough and had an honest enough appraisal of its interests and capabilities to make the honest, accurate assessment that they would do nothing in Putin but offer him diplomatic protests were he to invade Ukraine.

And the EU crafted its own policy response based on that accurate, honest appraisal of its own weakness and cowardice.

You can call them cowards, but you cannot call them self-deluded fools.

At least they understood themselves.

And what has the US done, by contrast?

We encouraged the Maidan protestors to hit the gas pedal on their revolution, but as Russia has done all the things that only a child could fail to predict that Russia would do, we have been surprised at every turn by the inevitable.

Now this got Obama some good press in February, back when supporting Maidan seemed like the right move for American Social Media Foreign Policy, and was, at that moment, a cost-free gesture.

But now the check is coming due, and what do we do to support the revolution we encouraged?

We offer Tweets.

Tweets.

The EU knew that they too would only offer Strongly Worded Tweets, should Ukraine depose Yanukuvich and Russia in turn invade Urkaine. Which is why they attempted to discourage Ukraine from doing that.

The American President, on the other hand, urged Ukraine to do just that, without telling them that should Russia begin shooting bullets into Ukrainians, the Ukranians could expect America to respond with Precision-Guided Tweets.

Obama has long had this sense of delusion about himself, that he is so inherently good and pure and charismatic that his simple words will move oceans, like the words of God Himself.

I can only imagine he did this because the thought, in the end, his Precious Red-Letter Words would be enough to fix another disaster he'd caused.

One last point:

If Obama were serious about any of this, he'd at least offer a Presidential Address to the Nation warning Russia away.

Why? Aren't those "just words" as well?

Yes, but the trick of the Presidential address is that it's an escalation. When a President speaks to the nation, he puts his own credibility and his own political fortunes on the line.

If he fails to act in the face of aggression after that, he suffers politically.

Thus, the point of the exercise is to put one's counter-party on notice that one has invested a policy with his own personal limited cache of authority, and hence will be much more likely to back that policy up with something more than well-crafted #hashtags.

But of course Obama isn't doing that. Instead, he has a relatively low-level bureaucrat out there #TweetingForFreedom.

And I'm not sure I blame him for that.

I don't want to go to war with Russia, either.

But I do wish that perhaps Obama could have managed the reasonable, realistic assessment of his actual level of capability and willingness to employ force that the EU managed.

And unfortunately, I think the Ukrainians will soon be wishing that as well.

I Just Got an Email from Winston Churchill... who, surprisingly, approves of Obama's foreign policy.

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of rising Russia and all the odious apparatus of the KGB state, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight on FaceBook, we shall fight on Instagram and Pinterest, we shall fight and, with growing follower lists and growing Likes, we shall defend our #hashtag, whatever the cost may be.

We shall fight on Twitter, we shall fight on Vine, we shall fight on the Washington Post's op-ed pages and in the New York Times' comment areas, we shall fight in Buzzfeed's gifs; we shall never surrender.

And if, which I do not for a moment believe, this #hashtag or a large part of it were hijacked by trolls, then our social media reach, armed and guarded by the writers at Media Matters and the Daily Beast, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, some miracle should descend upon us in rescue us so we can return, as we much desire, to the #WarOnWomen.

Romney wants to #BanTampons, please retweet.

9 It's all of a piece with the notion that only those who are in the proper caste are fully self-determined beings with their own agency. No one else is and is only responding as they do Because American Imperialism.

Thus, Putin doesn't really mean it when he talks about restoring Mother Russia.

Thus, Muslim extremists don't mean it when they say they will kill all the infidels.

No, no, no. Thus are just responses to what their overlords are doing to them and if America just grovels and mouths the correct platitudes, then all the bad things will stop. After all, the bad things occur only because we, the only ones who are truly human, are causing them to occur.

And now we're going to have a global war because Our Betters are idiotic twats. Yay.

12 I think you re wrong about the consistency of EU policies regarding Ukraine, Ace. They sent in politician after politician - people like Westerwellethe German Foreign Minister and Ashton the EUCommissar for foreign policy coordination - to whip up the Maidan crowd. The EU certainly would have loved itself some Ukraine and followed through on that wish, but now that this has provoked Russia into actions they are as clueless as we are.

The only difference is that, while I can see their interest in expansion andhaving Ukraine as a member-state, I have no idea what our business is in this whole affair. We have no interests there. Right now, we are more militant about European interests than the Europeans themselves.

Um. Yes. Well. About the Ashton woman.

So let's reflect that Putin wanted a Ukraine crisis. For a couple of reasons. One was a _casus belli_ to grab chunks of Ukraine to be incorporated into his resurgent Greater Russia. Another was an opportunity to dial up the price of natural gas to Ukraine, while simultaneously demanding payment of arrears, and convince Western idiots to underwrite the hugely inflated bill.

And anyone with the sense God gave a goose would know all this in advance.

So why would Ashton hand Putin what he wanted, a crisis to exploit?

Consider Ashton's antecedents. She got her start in UK politics back in the days of CND, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, a lefty peacenik group opposing Reagan and Thatcher.

Well, after the end of the Cold War, access was gained to certain of the Soviet system's files, and certain former Soviet intelligence officers talked, and it turned out that there had been a massive longstanding program run out of Moscow Centre to penetrate and control Western civilian organizations. Such as labor unions, educational societies, and... disarmament groups. To include... CND. Specifically named as such by the defectors.

So Ashton has in all likelihood been a paid catspaw of the Kremlin going back many decades.

80 just got this email from Winston Churchill:

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of rising Russia and all the odious apparatus of the KGB state, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight on FaceBook, we shall fight on Instagram and Pinterest, we shall fight with growing follower lists and growing Alexa ratings we shall defend our #hashtag, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on Twitter, we shall fight on Vine, we shall fight on the Washington Post's op-ed pages and in the New York Times' comment areas, we shall fight in Buzzfeed's gifs; we shall never surrender, and if, which I do not for a moment believe, this #hashtag or a large part of it were hijacked by trolls, then our social media reach, armed and guarded by the writers at Media Matters and the Daily Beast, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, some miracle should descend upon us in rescue us so we can return, as we much desire, to the #WarOnWomen.

82 WWII Britain and France honored their obligations to Poland by declaring war on Germany. But Germany's gamble paid off. They threw their entire armored might with airpower at Poland while leaving token forces guarding the Rhur. And after one abortive armor attack into the Rhur by France, no further attacks were carried out while Germany and the USSR dissected Poland.

106 F*** the EU

Well, I am inclined to agree with that sentiment in general.

The United States saved Europe's ass in two World Wars and the Cold War. Our military expenditures enabled them to build their lavish welfare states.

By way of thanks, they've spent the last fifty years or so sneering at us for being warmongering cowboys. The EU was created in part to counter our economic "hegemony".

The EU is also destroying the national cultures of its member states and is importing African Muslims as fast as possible. Anyone who objects is vilified as a racist.

So yeah, "F*** the EU".

110 Obama spent his entire adult life -- from probably early teens on -- being the living embodiment of everything rich, white progressives wished they were -- ethnic, black, exotic, interesting, authentic, etc, etc, etc.

They melted in front of him. He was everything hoped for, everything they wanted black people to be, everything they disliked about themselves with their privilege and whiteness.

At what age did some rich, white progressive first tell Obama that he should be President? I'm sure in law school. Probably before then.

Obama mistook the personal effect he had on rich, white progressives with their souls dripping with white guilt ... he thought that was some universal charisma he possessed. That all people would want to do what he says and feel cleansed by his presence and acceptance.

But the rest of the world is not made up of rich, white chicks and pampered, pale dudes who feel guilty about being rich and white and are desperate for Obama's healing touch of forgiveness.

I think Obama is honestly confused when people don't prostrate themselves the way the rich, white guilters do. He though he had some sort of magical powers and that his mesmerizing effect wasn't so demographically limited.

118 You know, if I were one of those paranoid types prone to conspiracy theories, I might think that when Obama was talking to Medvedev and telling him that he would have more flexibility after the election, that this is exactly what he was talking about. The reason that the Obama administration was unhappy with the EU is that they wanted to spread the apparent policy failure around. Instead of it just being Obama encouraging Ukraine to go rouge, and then doing nothing as Putin had his excuse to do what he wanted, Obama could paint the whole thing as a failure of the global community. But, since the EU wouldn't play along, Obama has no cover when anyone points to his apparent ineffectualness.

If I was paranoid.

166 123 why is it paranoid to take Obama at his word?

Posted by: willow at April 25, 2014 07:56 PM (nqBYe)

Well, to say all the following:
1. There was an agreement between Russia and Obama back in March of 2012 that after the US election, the West, led by Obama, would encourage anti-Russian protesters to bring about the fall of the pro-Russian government of Ukraine.
2. In response to this planned upon West-encouraged unrest in Ukraine, Russia would take the Crimea (and more?) and that the West would do some harrumphing, but not much more.

Some would say that there is no evidence of this conspiracy theory and that anyone speculating in that direction is just paranoid.

174 So, at our house we always do a big, traditional Greek Orthodox Easter and invite a lot of our friends plus some of the foreign students at the university where my mom teaches (Math, not "humanities") who don't go home for the holiday. Anyway, this year Western and Orthodox Easter was on the same date, so none of our American friends came (other family obligations) but all the foreign students did. 2 girls are from Russia (here on Basketball scholarships), 1 girl is from Latvia (Volleyball scholarship), and 2 of the girls are from Germany (Volleyball scholarships). The 2 from Russia and the 1 from Latvia (a state that was once under rule by the USSR) asked us what we thought of Putin -- they have a bad opinion of him (the Latvian girl for obvious reasons, but I was surprised the Russian girls would too because he's allegedly popular back home, but then I remembered these 18 and 19 year girls have come half-way around the world on the HOPE of become pro-ball players to *get away* from there) saying they thought Putin was going to start WW3. The 2 German girls were pretty smug about being "on Germany's side" in a kind of "what is America going to do about it?" kind of way, so I looked the 2 German girls right in the eye and said "You know what? Everyone else in the world has been complaining for a long time now about what a 'bully" America is, so it's going to serve them all right to see what happens when America isn't the so-called bully to see what kind of bully they'll get. Everyone is going to be wishing to have America to lead -- or be the "bully" again -- and they aren't going to get that with Obama." The 2 smirks on the German girls' faces disappeared but the Russian and Latvian girls were in total agreement, with one of the Russian girls saying "You are so right -- because without America to stop it, another bully will take that place in the world -- and Putin is jumping in to fill the void."

He's doing it on purpose.

191 I don't think anything Putin has done has been inevitable. He could have allowed Ukraine to align with the EU, as international law requires him to do, and still gouge the EU for gas. It is precisely because the EU has no capacity for warfare that it can be tolerated to extend to the borders of Russia.

What this debacle has revealed is that Putin is such a megalomaniac that he imagines he is heir to the Soviet Union and all its populations.

And that requires a serious contingency plan for defeating the Russian army. I don't think Obama has one. I seriously suspect the Army doesn't either. And unless they are prepared for the failure of their moderating escalations, there's no point launching escalations.

202 I was just going to congratulate Ace on his brilliant Churchill email parody (pasted in below), but then I went and saw what the DNC and WhiteHouse and "DiploMutt"'s twitter feeds were actually like and I instantly became frozen with fear and psychic agony.

This would be funny if we were merely making fun of "progressive" activist-buffoons and assorted online trolls. But these particular buffoons and trolls are the leaders of the free world and have 100% of the actual political power in this nation.

Beneath the nervous guffaws is true terror. It's not that the lunatics have taken over the asylum: The tweeners have taken over the high school.

Ace's brilliant-but-suicide-inducing Churchill parody reposted for the record:
----------------------------
Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of rising Russia and all the odious apparatus of the KGB state, we shall not flag or fail.

206 Hey Ace, why not run a VA horror story thread. I am so sick of our men and women that have been in uniform getting fucked over by these guys.

Here's mine it's not horrific but it really did happen and it pisses me off to this day. My ex was Navy. She had a tooth pulled and the govt. was supposed to fix it.

So we are living in Chicago and she was naturalizing. On the very fucking day she did the citizenship thing we decide to hop off the train on the way home and go to the VA to look into finishing her dental work. We meet a receptionist and ask some questions about scheduling etc.

Later we get a bill from the VA for a couple of hundred bucks for lab work and X-Rays. We did not do any of that. I was there and I know we talked to a receptionist and left.

My ex was at the time 6 months pregnant with my son. The bill specifically said x-rays. A rationale person might think I'm exaggerating so I'm focusing on that point. There is no way either of us would have agreed to an x-ray knowing that she was carrying our unborn son.

So she argued with the VA for months and they kept saying that their records showed yada yada. In the end they took the money out of our tax return and there was nothing we could do about it.

I wrote my congressman and my senator but never received a reply. Those scum bags bilked us and they are bilking vets to this day.

Another interesting tidbit I got as we were discussing how Obama thinks he can "charm" people into doing things, which is fine for classroom discussions, but doesn't work in the real world when you are facing people like Putin (or radical Islam, etc) and that the time to start was way back with the Georgia conflict and not to draw "red lines" with other places like Syria that he had no intention of keeping, I jokingly said "Because no one wants to try to invade Russia --Napoleon couldn't do it; Hitler couldn't do it; because the Russians don't play -- they will burn their cities to the ground and wait for winter." To which the two Russian girls emphatically replied "No, no not -- it's not like that anymore. The people now aren't tough like that -- they're weak and lazy and spoiled."
So at least Russia is also dealing with a generation of Pajamaboys too.

You might've noticed something about obama, by now -- he's a saint by proxy.

What I mean by that is obama is always championing many causes, but does so from afar, or with other people's money, or with other people's blood.

For example, obama supposedly tried to bring democracy to Syria...and got a lot of people killed. And here is obama supposedly trying to save Ukraine's sovereignty by egging them on to rebel...and getting lots of Ukrainians killed.

obama, as you all know, sickens me. i know his type. And obama's type is the worst kind of snake in human form. obama is a leech; a bloodsucker with devotees. obama's type do 'great things.' Belarus, already lead by an old hard line Communist, aligns with Putin. Putin decides that he wants the Baltic states and foments revolution in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The Baltic states revert to Russian rule because the EU is dickless and they don't have as many tanks and tubes as Russia and he knows that Obama is also dickless and won't do anything. They ignore Poland for the time being, knowing that there might be a fight. After the next election, if (God forbid) Shrillary is elected, Poland is next on the menu with Germany and the Czech Republic not far behind. Hungary, Romania, Austria, and all the Balkan states see which way the wind is blowing fall into the New Soviet sphere. Greece follows. The only wild cards I can see in the whole scenario are Poland and Germany. Both hate the Russians, but what kind of a fight will they put up?

Well, they are the only 2 Russian girls at the university right now, so they are also each other's closest friends -- I'm sure they have discussed this between the two of them and you know (especially at that age -- 18/19 years old) your BFF can influence the way you see things a lot. SO it could be that the country girl influenced the city girl or vice versa.

i went to the local VA and applied to receive care for some of the non-trivial injuries i incurred while in uniform.

the response, which i only got over the phone, because almost two years later i've yet to receive a letter, was that, since i hadn't done any long periods on AD, through no fault of mine, i wasn't *really* a veteran, and therefore i wasn't entitled to any care or benefits.

They are also NATO members, but can the EU and NATO match the number of tubes and tanks that Russia has anymore. I don't know and I'm too lazy to look it up. Not sure about the numbers of air forces. France is France. I doubt that the French will deign to get involved. Britain just mothballed their last aircraft carrier because they can no longer afford to pay for operating it. If the US were to react, it would take weeks to move armor to Europe by sea, and if the Russians already had neutralized British air power, what do you think the odds of getting American troops and weapons to Europe are? 413 As far as "tubes and tanks," which isn't even the right comparison, the US alone has over twice as many as Russia, and much better. Plus, the diff in quality in military personnel is enormous. Far better question is number of advanced aircraft, tankers, C4ISR assets, and PGMs. Huge advantage US and NATO up and down the line.

Let's not get carried away. There is a universe of difference between picking on weak, divided, poor, badly equipped, and non-NATO Ukraine, and any of the other countries listed. Russia's military is a shadow of what the FSU had. It has improved somewhat of late, but only somewhat. This Is the same country that was fought to a standstill 10 years ago in Chechnya. They are better now, but not vastly so. Their military still has grave problems and limitations.

They might be able to bully the Baltics, but that would entail enormous risk for little gain. I dont think Putin is dumb or brave enough to risk a fight with NATO. Taking on Poland, even unaided, might result severe embarrassment. The Poles have a pretty tough, disciplined, well-trained military. They could give the Russians a hard time.

Plus, it isn't all upside for Russia. Threaten the Baltics/Poland, and they could lose the very valuable, vulnerable Kaliningrad/Konigsberg enclave.

Putin doesn't have any plans outside the Ukraine. Even taking that country will likely be all they can handle and expose serious operational shortcomings. They even had a bunch of problems in their Georgian operations in 08.
