However, letting pot users possess firearms still puts the state in direct conflict with federal law that prohibits “shipping, transporting, receiving or possessing firearms or ammunition,” while under a controlled substance.

The federal government, which puts marijuana on the same outlawed level as heroin, is not backing off its position.

So, the useless shits in the corrupt Obamanite administration will not enforce the marijuana law and they are reducing sentences and letting convicted pot users out of jail but they damn sure will not let them possess a gun which is guaranteed by the Constitution. Meanwhile, there is not one damn line in the list of enumerated powers that allows Congress to outlaw ANY drug. Also, there is no "good and plenty" or "I won" clause either.

Authorities said there could be a variety of causes for the slide, including prior construction at the site, warmer weather and a wet winter that put more water into the ground where it acts as a lubricant for unstable rocks and soil.

So AP found "unnamed authorities" that blamed "warmer weather" AKA Global Warming that is causing this. We are experiencing the coldest winter in a century nationwide and they are blaming warming. The woman from Jackson I heard on the radio said that this area had always been a "rock fall-landslide" area. So IOW the idiots who built the homes were stupid.

I paid about $3K for my computer and a Kapro printer (which was a daisy wheel). All that for a 20M hard drive, single 5" floppy, and a monochrome monitor. I had originally intended this only work work related stuff at home.
I still have the printer. It was a diablo with a Kapro sticker on it.

I had the wide-carriage pinfeed-paper attachment, numerous wheels, pica, elite, italics. Different color ribbons. And the ribbon re-inker. (My accountant had the same, until he spilled a bottle of ink on an expensive oriental carpet, after which he calculated just buying fresh ribbons was more economical. Heh Good times.)

1200 precious 1980 dollars, a real hearty investment even when I was well-off.

Bought fanfold paper by the case. Still have half a case of wide-carriage green-bar fanfold, if anyone needs some.

The one thing I never sprang for was the sound-insulated clamshell box for it. My neighbors didn't complain. But, then, I was the landlord....

I remember using 8" floppies as a back-up system. It took close to an hour and a half, and used around 20 of them. Had to swap them out every few minutes. Such a tedious operation, but it paid off when we could restore files.

When they built the new research center at my university, they keycard accessed the entrance to the main building plus the entrances to all the lab space.

(The front of the building is offices.)
It's perfectly possible (and indeed done) to give someone office access (where all the faculty are) but not lab access.

Yet they chose to restrict anyone who didn't work in the building.

Which meant when I left the lab, even though I was still a student at the university I couldn't go back and visit my old boss.
And other students couldn't visit faculty members without "Escorts."

I was in college in the late 80's, and had a Smith-Corona daisy wheel printer. At the time the University would not accept dot-matrix printed papers, the "new tech" apparently scared them.
I paid for a lot of beer by charging $1 a page to print things for people. (which they would bring me on a 5 1/4" floppy). Hell I bet now the papers are turned in over the Internet.

I'm been working with my cousin's netbook, whatever, the thing is many times more powerful than my old XP desktop. Had to learn W8 to change settings, upgrade things, install ware for her.

Having used my cell so much, using her touchscreen was pretty natural. Other than moving that blocky thing out of the way, and finding my way back to the familiar desktop, it was just... Windows. I had anticipated worse, as well.

And I'm going to miss her computer as soon as I hand it back to her. Aw, dang. I finally reached Upgrade Fever level. Well, at least it's not about vehicles.

If it is like every other upgrade they have done in the past it takes 3 times as much memory as the last version and double what they say you need.

IOW, if the say min 2G, 4G for optimum, then you need 8G or it will be slower than dog shit. Right now they are saying the min for 64bit is 2G. Also, some computers will not run 8.1 due to a compatibility issue.

Since I took up computing, I have always written the date as year-month-day because sort order. I didn't even realize I was a Reichean!

And I use the full year, too. If we learned nothing else from Y2K, put in the century part of the year, FFS!

Be careful. PC World says there are compatibility issues with running 8.1. You may want to check first before going through an upgrade hell that you have to back out of. Especially since nobody gives you actual installation disks any more.

Drivers are so that a printer can do graphics; you don't need a driver for an ASCII text only printer. Send ASCII characters to the parallel port on your XP machine and they should print on the Daisy wheel.
Use the Printers and Fax screen to add a Generic Text only printer to your system on LPT1 (Assuming a parallel printer). This will work with old dot matrix printers also.

The update to 8.1 that came out this month makes it friendlier to desktop and laptop users. Metro apps can be pinned tot he task bar and the task bar will appear on the Start screen or within Metro apps if you hover the mouse at the bottom of the screen. Also, a title bar with minimize and close buttons now appears if you hover at the top of the screen in a Metro app. This especially helps on laptops with trackpad where it was often a real pain to close apps without a lot of excessive dragging.

The other most significant item is the addition of buttons for power and search buttons to the Start screen, because some users had a lot of trouble wrapping their heads around the charms bar or right clicking in the lower left corner for the menu that included power options. So the learning curve for migrating users is reduced a bit.

189 Oddly, I never saw a Kaypro except in photos. But talk about "luggables", Compaq's first computer was a "portable". Amber 9" screen, floppy drive and 20M disk; the keyboard was also detachable and comprised one end of the case, which you lugged around like a suitcase. By '83 my employer at the time (Coastal Corp.) was buying up PCs by the ton lot, mainly IBM 5150s (the original "PC"). These machines all ran "IBM-DOS" as an OS. Don't recall ever seeing Microsoft mentioned back then. The other software I'd often deploy with these machines (with their 3270 emulation cards; 50 points if you know what that is) was things like Lotus 1-2-3, WordPerfect, dBase, occasionally Procomm Plus with a US Robotics modem, etc. MS (and Windows) did not really become a significant player until the early 1990s, when they finally came out with Windows 3.11, which was their first release that was more or less stable. It was after that you started seeing things like MS Word, Excel, and gradually the rest of the software packages that ultimately became Office.

Compared to your prices we pay more for most things - my son buys everything including undies from the US!

I haven't really looked at wages/prices comparisons between our countries but I assume prices are oftenhigher here because we don't have such a big market - 22 million people v over 300 million in the US

Before online buying we were truly being ripped off though...

194 191 Just kind of blown away by what some lower level computer pros don't know. The IT guys know stuff. Some of the rest are dumbfounded by System Restores and Registry Keys. A lot of corporate types let the IT guys do everything. Eventually most of the rest don't keep up with things.

Most people are unfamiliar with the process Microsoft uses for writing an operating system. I'll reveal it here.
First they have to hire enough people to scoop up 16 tons of dog poop off of peoples yards. This takes several years and the first - or core - material collected is decomposing pretty badly by the time the last material is added to the pile. Then they paint it all gold, and digitize it so that it can be put onto DVDs. This is how such master pieces as Windows 95, Windows Vista, and Windows 8.X were produced. It also explains why Microsoft OSs stink so badly.

PC-DOS killed the Kaypro. They stuck with CPM for too long.

We also don't limit the amount of cheap crap China can send us the way they do in Europe. We have an expanding low wage gulag though. Many in it are over qualified for their jobs. What he really wanted is beach restoration. This would mean taxpayers would foot the bill and not be allowed to access these areas because they are protected. It also helps the uber rich who are trying to stick the taxpayer with the bill to protect their Malibu homes from washing away. Many of the big Hwd name s have homes on Broad Beach which is eroding away. Pay for it yourselves, asshole!

So never? Let's face it, the movie going public just ain't into aging male stars like thirty/forty years ago. John Wayne would be delegated to small supporting bits and indies if he was in this era. Some studios think they can catch lightning in a bottle with guys like Depp (they're even trying it with Costner now) but it rarely works anymore. I'm actually surprised Downey draws in as much as he does but I think that has more to do with the comic book genre then him.
