Final Overnight Thread

OK, what was said before, that was a lie. THIS is the real party. Swearsies.

The theme of this, the true and final Overnight Thread of this evening:

Chickens.

Seriously, I want some yard birds something awful. Maybe next Spring.

Buona Pasqua, darling hearts.

This multiple thread thing came out disorienting and strange, didn't it? Wasn't meant that way. Sorry. Will never do this to you again.

I am curious though as to why everyone must move to the top thread. What does it matter, if the conversation is good where you were?

12 In my experience the best way to deal with chickens is to grab them by the legs, twirl them around and around above your head, so they're good and dizzy, and only then lay their heads down on the chopping block.

Some people move right to the block but the chickens flop all over the place, and it just goes to show you how important it is to make sure they are dizzy.

I was told by someone who bred fighting cocks (and heeeeere we go) that when their blood is up and they're itching for a fight, gamecocks' asses actually turn red.

Now, was that South Carolinian just feeding this displaced Northerner a line, or is this true?

27 A friend of mine has a few chickens; he lives in the city. Sort of. In any case, he adores them, but the cost of feeding them is less than what he gets in eggs. Occasionally when I call, I can hear one of them crowing. One of them, the bantam I think, lays small, light green eggs.

A bunker exists on Peanut Island near Riviera Beach, Florida and was a nuclear fallout shelter constructed for JFK. The Kennedy family residence was on Palm Beach Island, and this was the fall-back position if the Ruskies dropped the big one.

The funniest thing I ever heard with chickens was at the Butler County Fair in PA several decades ago. All the poultry were in a big barn whose large wooden doors were open.

The din from the cacophony of crowing and rooster badassery filled the air. A sudden and fierce gust of wind from an approaching storm blew the doors closed with a huge WHAM!

Dead. Fcuking. Silence...

...for about two seconds, then the hullabaloo erupted at twice the volume as before as each and every rooster tried to reassert his badassery.

More than 2/3 of the state belongs to the Feds, even though Alaska's constitution states that the land belongs to Alaskans. Not the Alaskan government--Alaskans. I've never seen 3. But the more the merrier I suppose.

We have 1 more here for Easter, my Dad has joined us for Easter, first holiday since my Mom died 3/15. It's nice, he wants to reminisce, we introduced him to the best pizza in town (Mom could never eat that) and he and I had a few and tried to solve the world's problems.

Ya know he'd be a true Moron here, but I always reference this as a "political site I read", I'm not losing my anonymity here cause if he showed up he'd soon guess by my nick who I was.

Plus he'd waste a lot of time diddling here and he needs to clean that huge house out of all my antique collector/dealer Mom's stuff while he still can!

Seriously, it's just so good to have him here and know he's doing OK. Somehow getting fat, but then he's not caring for my Mom 24/7 which had been going on for a long time.

Mom is in a better place and we feel blessed to have him w/ us at this holiday. Tomorrow off to the Baptist church she grew up in where he has arranged for flowers in her memory.

Happy Easter.

Posted by: Blanco Basura at April 20, 2014 01:29 AM (0AKks)

144 So, apropos of nothing, a couple of random factoids.

If you're headed to LA from Ventura or coastal points north, the main road goes over a pass into the Conejo Valley near Thousand Oaks, which then goes over a smaller pass into the San Fernando Valley. The first hill out of the Ventura/Oxnard/Camarillo plain is called "The Conejo Grade".....which, in colloquial English, is "The Bunny Hill". Don't be fooled by that designation, however, as it is a substantial section of 7% highway.

Speaking of which, the famous district of New York City with amusements -- "Coney Island"....is about bunnies as well. Conejo (Spanish) = Coney (archaic English) = rabbit.

We've been together 25 years now.....and I had thought that "BH" was the highest and best way to reference her in my life....but she was concerned that I might never intend to marry [like I'm going to marry anyone else, or leave her....]. So it's been agreed that she's my fiancée and that we'll wed as soon as we're in a reasonably safe jurisdiction to do so [NOT CA]. This has made her happy, and I'm pleased to make her happy because I love her.

It's left me pretty thoroughly bemused, because it illustrates the difference between a call upon the law and a call upon my honor. I've been in the business world since 1983, and any time someone says, "here's your legal obligation", I start looking for outs and limits.....where any time someone invokes my honor, I look to do what's indisputably right.

So, though I value the honorable "BH" above the legalistic "fiancée", she prefers the latter. What's a guy to do?

Once in a lifetime a man may be fortunate enough to find the one that if he spent every free moment in an effort to see one of her smiles his life will not have been wasted.

Make her happy, and cherish every smile.

Once
in a lifetime a man may be fortunate enough to find the one that if he
spent every free moment in an effort to see one of her smiles his life
will not have been wasted.

She is that one, and you are that fortunate.

It's only fortunate if it's mutual.

Otherwise it can become torture no matter how kind the one who does not.

One year, I took the time to run our taxes together both with and without being married. We would have paid an additional $4,000 had we been married.....which, coincidentally, was the cost of our vacation in Fiji that year.

That year, the BH agreed that the vacay was more important than a piece of paper.

I didn't say "marry her immediately", I said "make her happy", and indeed this is what you are doing, by the mere use of one word over another.

Growing up in Thousand Oaks, the local version of a county fair, although not the Ventura County Fair, was called Conejo Valley Days. This commenced with a parade down Thousand Oaks Blvd. and a carnival, usually on a space off Janss Road near the 23 Freeway.

I rarely got involved in the festivities but if asked I would tell people "I'd rather CVD than have VD!"

I recently tried to watch 'The Canyons,' Paul Schrader's attempt at a comeback that is best known for Lindsay Lohan getting nekkid and looking a good decade older than her actual age. The notable thing for me is when two characters are discussing a third and one of them notes that his grandparents own a major portion of Thousand Oaks. This made me look up who wrote the screenplay, which IMDB says was Bret Easton Ellis. I had always thought of him as an East Coast guy but it seems he grew up in Sherman Oaks. Even so, it was surprising to hear a reference to the Janss family.

Posted by: ManWithNoParty at April 20, 2014 02:16 AM

Before any numbers come out on premium paying/non premium paying, the insurance carriers are going to have a problem with people not paying a premium (of any amount even with a subsidy) who are unable to find a physcian who will take them as a patient coupled with enormous co-pays and deductibles with crap Obamacare exchange policies who stop paying anything in premiums. They are already figuring out that if they have direct draft for premiums to just change banks or go without an account. Next they will try to get someone else to collect (employers, UI, IRS, etc) for the Obama insurance carriers. Then they will call them premium deadbeats.

219 Seven Stanzas at Easter

Make no mistake: if He rose at all
it was as His body;
if the cells’ dissolution did not reverse, the molecules
reknit, the amino acids rekindle,
the Church will fall.

It was not as the flowers,
each soft Spring recurrent;
it was not as His Spirit in the mouths and fuddled
eyes of the eleven apostles;
it was as His Flesh: ours.

The same hinged thumbs and toes,
the same valved heart
that — pierced — died, withered, paused, and then
regathered out of enduring Might
new strength to enclose.

Let us not mock God with metaphor,
analogy, sidestepping transcendence;
making of the event a parable, a sign painted in the
faded credulity of earlier ages:
let us walk through the door.

The stone is rolled back, not papier-mache,
not a stone in a story,
but the vast rock of materiality that in the slow
grinding of time will eclipse for each of us
the wide light of day.

And if we will have an angel at the tomb,
make it a real angel,
weighty with Max Planck’s quanta, vivid with hair,
opaque in the dawn light, robed in real linen
spun on a definite loom.

Let us not seek to make it less monstrous,
for our own convenience, our own sense of beauty,
lest, awakened in one unthinkable hour, we are
embarrassed by the miracle,
and crushed by remonstrance.

John Updike.

Happy Easter. Pray for those clergy and lay people
who serve in denominations where their Presiding Bishop or Bishop or head of their denomination suggests that the resurrection of Jesus Christ was not a bodily resurrection, and yet the faithful continue to stand on the historical faith-that which Christ proclaimed and which the apostles died for that Jesus rose from the dead-literally.

225 "...if the cells’ dissolution did not reverse, the molecules reknit, the amino acids rekindle, the Church will fall."

I'm glad for those who find comfort in this. The question of the form of the risen Christ has certainly been a master of debate — and sectarian schism — since he first told Mary not to touch him but allegedly let Tom poke fingers in the holes. Never found it necessary to faith myself to believe in the reanimation of his battered corpse.

I had a JW explain to me once that all 144,000 of the Saved (yes he believed that's all) would be reconstituted from their original molecules, down to the utmost subatomic particle. I asked, you know, what about some part of a past mortal's dust in a present mortal's body? Oh, God keeps track of it all so it can be sorted out on Judgement Day. Right. Seems like an awful lot of tedious heavenly inventorying of matter for a Deity who can build universes from scratch.

He has prepared a place for us, he said. Many mansions. Additional technical details may be intellectually intriguing, but that promise is the part that matters.

I hope this didn't come across as arguing. Blessed Easter FenelonSpeaks! He is risen!
