Announcing The First In A Series Movie thread - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]

I chatted with the boss and we've been given the go-ahead to try something new.

Next week at 8 pm (EST) Saturday, I'll post a movie thread. Ideally, you folks will rent/on-demand/pop in the blu-ray of said movie and we'll all watch it together, commenting as we go. It might be a bit much for an every week kind of post, but we'll see how it goes and, perhaps, make it a once a month/every three weeks kind of thing if folks get on-board with it.

Blogger privilege means that I get to pick the first movie, but after that we'll conduct some sort of poll to determine the next. And, let's keep it light and fruity, with nothing too heavy. I'm thinking along the lines of Animal House, Caddyshack, Battlefield Earth, Pacific Rim, Fast Times at Ridgemont High type of stuff. No Godfather. No Schindler's List. Perhaps an Alien now and then. As one of the commenters said of this concept, it's like MST3K at the HQ.

So, let's kick this thing off.

Next week's selection is likely to come as no surprise to some of you. I choose Battleship, starring Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Brooklyn Decker, and this remarkable fellow. It is one of those movies that is simply awful but is eminently watchable. It is, quite simply, a fun movie to both love and hate and I'm keeping my fingers crossed here that at least a few of our Navy Morons and 'Ettes will take part because I can only imagine what they'll have to say about it.

If you have HBO, the movie is presently available via On-Demand for free. If not, it is available via On-Demand and Roku for just $2.99.

So, sync your watches and get ready for some fun.

I'll see you back here next Saturday.

Nope.

There aren't a lot of privileges that come with being a guest blogger. Picking the movie just once is one. Of course, Office Space and Groundhog Day will be part of the mix at some point. They'll be added to the poll.

66 Battleship bugged the crap out of me because with just a little work it could have been a vastly better movie.

For instance: if they'd just had the sense to cut out the whole "character development" bullcrap at the beginning and just get right to the zappin' and shootin', it would have rocked.

Also: a bit more battleship would have been nice. I mean, when that's the name of the goddamned movie, more than a couple of scenes with the Mighty Mo would have been pretty cool.

94 For a movie that appears to have been granted a lot of Navy support, the uniforms in Battleship are ATROCIOUS.

The lead character wears two pins that by the rules can never be worn together. The gold one on top and the silver one on bottom - they're for (almost) the same thing; gold is for Officer and silver for Enlisted. When a Sailor has earned the silver one and subsequently earned the gold one, only the gold one is to be worn.

That shit drives me nuts.

191 I've seen Battleship, a while ago. I remember it as being unmemorable. I doubt I'll see it again, though it sounds like a fun project. Besides, I honestly can't spare the $2.99.

One lesson to learn about MST3K, though--I was originally impatient with the in-between skits, until I started watching some of the spin-offs (Cinematic Titanic, RiffTrax).

I learned that without those skits to make the characters into actual characters, then they were just the jerks who talk during the movie. Even if the movie was Battleship.

So, you know, un-asked-for advice and all.

203 Shred-worthy? "Chronicles of Riddick". It was awful (and it ensured the third Riddick movie would be... Pitch Black II, in all but name). But "Chronicles" might be fun if someone funny's going to mock it.

212 Eight is too early for me. I might be able to next week, but from now until first freeze I'll be outside until I'm done for the day, which is never, because I have too many roses.

If it's still going after rose season, I'll try it.

I spent six hours outside, plus an hour or so around 9 am this morning & haven't finished pruning. I had to cut some so low due to dead canes, to an inch or less above ground level. Then I promptly stepped on some of them. I came in before 7 because we had a cold wind. Usually I stay out until after it's dark out & use lights we have that go on when you're near them. It was too cold.

I've only pruned about half. Tomorrow it's going to be 51 & windier.
