What kid wouldn't love to find an Easter basket stuffed with plastic eggs, inside of which are dried fruits??!! But the best suggestions have to be: Tea, and Stationery. Yes, stationery. Because children love quality writing paper. You know, if you give your kid tea and stationery for Easter, you're kind of giving them permission to kill you in your sleep. Might as well go whole hog and give your kid a Pet Fart (TM) as a gift. The "Leveraxe" is built oddly-- the center of momentum isn't in the middle of the blade, but off to the side. Count yourself lucky. My mom tried to make the jello but it was spoon edible. Carrots would have upset dad.Dad has a delicate stomach. My mom was the worst cook on the planet. Taco salad was browned hamburger with lettuce (no chips or sauce) Chili was browned hamburger and tomato juice, taverns were browned hamburger and a bun........you get the picture. My husband use to laugh until I took him home one time. Been married 20 yrs and he has eaten mom's cooking one time.

It's not good. She's been moved to a home where she'll get 24/7 medical care. Doubtful she'll make a full recovery. This is addition to her no longer remembering loved ones, as well as her suffering from Mylodysplastic syndrome.
Seeing her on Easter. Hopefully this isn't her last.

Liftoff is at about 39:50, but before then there are some segments showing their factory that are worth watching.
At ignition, a column of dirty water shot up and doused the rocket. Here is a good photo showing it streaked with mud as it departs the launch pad. Click the photo to enlarge, or click the file name to download it.

The photo also shows Falcon 9's landing legs. I'm pretty sure this is the first time in history that an orbital launch vehicle was fitted with landing legs. Up till now, that sort of thing was only found in science fiction.
There have been several tweets indicating that the test was successful, and the first stage made a soft landing on the ocean surface.

Unsugared Kool-aid (or any drink mix really) is a decent general dye for animal proteins. Did the recipe not call for adding vinegar? Dyeing fiber requires that an acid be added and vinegar is usually the one since it's cheap.

That lever axe looks like it might be useful for splitting firewood, but it's not an axe.
It's a variant of a splitting maul. Axes are for chopping across the
grain, or making oblique cuts. They really aren't meant for splitting
firewood, although they always get misused that way.

I am very happy that Private enterprise is taking a more dominant role in developing space technology. That's the stuff that a lot of people have been dreaming about for many decades. It's inspiring.
That being said, I'd be a little uneasy to notice so much smoke coming off the landing legs. I hope the heat doesn't compromise the structural integrity of whatever they are made of.

Well Kool-Ade contains citric acid, which should etch the egg shells enough that the dye "takes." You can dissolve nails with concentrated citric acid; it's pretty potent stuff.

But more importantly, I have physical scars on my knuckles from spinning wrenches on old 'Stangs, most notably a handful of 1971 Mach One's (351 Clevelands, bolted to C6 transmissions)

There's been some discussion and speculation about that. Some think it was paint burning.
The test vehicle has fixed legs, but the actual rocket keeps them retracted for most of the flight. They will probably be deployed at the last moment before touchdown, like the Shuttle's landing gear.

I'm not a lumberjack (but I'm OK). But I did stake mining claims for quite a few years, and that required that one chop down a tree every 500 meters on the perimeter line, and square the top of it to make highly-visible posts. Corner posts got metal tags nailed on them. Non-corner posts (identification posts) just had the claim name and post number written on two faces of the squared post with a marker. Of course, I rarely had to chop down anything more challenging than a six-inch spruce or pine to make a claim post. I liked to carry a Hudson Bay pattern axe for that work.

Maybe do actual cost for the foreign shipping instead of a rough percentage? I've had that done for me for some hobby materials although that was through PayPal and not a credit card. Some places used a rough percentage for the initial bill and then refunded the unused amount to my account.

Very first round the spent casing got munched - not sure what happened but it bounced back in from the ejection port and made it unhappy. I didn't see it so ejected a couple of rounds while trying to clear it, then I saw it in there and dumped it out. After that, it went bang every time.

Many construction trades have a 4 year apprenticeship. With overtime many people have 10K hours by the time they finish their apprenticeship. So, at 10K hours, they are a lower level journeyman with solid-to-excellent skills, but they still have plenty left to learn.

To understand the modern and/or conservative mindset, read some samples of what was said about the Garand between the time it was introduced in trials and, well, we won the war. There was a far better rifle, you know, but political connections made the choice. The damned thing was never going to work right, it was practically an enemy plot. Only sissies need semi-autos anyway. It would never have the hitting force of a 1903, with half its energy bled off for the action. And so on. There were similar rumors on the plus side. It's just how the mind works, or, some days, doesn't.
Also, did you know that John Garand (also Gene Stoner, Leonardo and Michelangelo) was gay? Or was it just Canadian...I forget.

I notice that a lot of rum has glitzy labels, compared to most other kinds of booze. I wonder why that is. I tend to shy away from that, assuming that it has more to do with marketing than actual quality.

Yep, that's true. The US had twice as many Enfields / 1917s on hand for WWI than Springfields. Records are sketchy but Sgt York probably did have an Enfield. (No windage adjustment on a 1917 though, part of why they aren't preferred by marksmen.)
However, for long service? Some of our troops in Gulf War 1 sent back home for their Springfields...

The original Garand chambering in, if I recall correctly, a .257 caliber, would have been magnificent.
Still, the .30-'06 version kicked ass on every battlefield.
Don't get me started on the Johnson rifle though. Great ideas, some good battlefield trials in the Pacific, but I smell the whiff of Chauchat in it's magazine system.
To me, the ultimate Garand variant isn't the M-14 / M1-a....but rather, the Beretta BM-59. Converted Garand, uses M-14 mags, just all round tuned to perfection rifle. Lust. LUST!.
As for a perfect modern service cartridge? Give me a modification of the 6.5 Grendel, but with the shoulder moved forward more like the 6.8 SPC. Then, the damn thing would work with the M-249 and other belt-fed weapons. The Grendel's shoulder is too far back, and the '249's feed-pawl can barely engage it on the shoulder radius.
Barring that, I'll stick to my 6.5x55 Swede rifles. Tack drivers, incredible penetration, great external and terminal ballistics, modest recoil....what's not to love?

I like the 7 year old Flor de Cana rum from Nicaragua. Very smooth, tasty. The 12 year old stuff is even better, but too pricey for my regular use.
I bought a bottle of One Barrel rum from Belize, and it sure smells nice, but tastes a little harsh.

Axes, by their nature, are used for cutting, not splitting.
Despite those statements, I've split many cords of stovewood with an axe. It takes at least two skills: 1) reading the grain of the subject piece, and 2) an ability to place the blade in the desired spot.
As far as 1) - techniques can help a great deal. On a straight grained, dry piece, a centered hit can work, as in the movies. On more usual, difficult pieces, an orthogonally oriented, near edge hit will be easier to accomplish, and result in whittling the round into smaller pieces.
The traditional test of 2) is to see if you can split a wooden match
stuck upright in the splitting block (let alone hit it). That can be a
very humbling experience, especially in a competition.
Sometimes, burying the blade on purpose, and lifting the entire unsplit piece to drop it axe-poll first onto the splitting block, will give the most satisfying results against the more difficult pieces.
Some wood pieces (particularly knotty chunks, or any elm) should be taken as physical embodiments of personal frustrations, that can only be solved by the release of an inordinate amount of exasperation. Most satisfying, once done. Everyone who has done this knows about those special blocks of wood they've set aside, and after much thought and an embarassing amount of effort, finally found a way to split them to size.
In any case, as the saying goes, heating with wood heats you many times: cutting, hauling, splitting, stacking, and burning.

Actually, your statement "there aren't many options to choose from" is entirely incorrect. Anything sweet will ferment in water (even if unpleasant to behold) and can be distilled to liquor. So you initially go to fruits (brandies) or grains....
Then you note that you're talking about "consumed (by volume)" rather than "sold". Especially in less-developed areas, there is a hell-of-a-lot of liquor that is consumed but never purchased.
I'd suspect that it's distilled rice wine -- whatever that is named -- and that it's popular in a swath from Africa through Bangladesh to Indonesia and north to Manchuria, and virtually none of it has tax stamps. Or labels. Or makes it more than 10 miles from where it was distilled.

Distilled fermented sugar cane -- rum
Distilled fermented fruits -- brandy
Distilled fermented potatoes (now mostly wheat) -- vodka
Distilled fermented corn -- whiskey
So I went with the most popular staple food that you can ferment and distill and figured it would be rice -- and rice has been grown across Africa and Asia long enough for everybody and their brother-in-law to set up a mash and a still.

Basic booze comes from fermenting sugars. These can come, as you note, from Grains, Fruits, or Honey, but also from sugarcane, sugar beets, potatoes, or -- in extreme cases -- mare's milk [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumis ].
Any basic fermented alcoholic drink can then be distilled. If you make wine -- whether from grapes or plums -- the distillate is a "brandy". If you ferment something else, the distillate can be called a wide variety of things. In many cases (sour mash Tennessee whiskey comes to mind), the intermediate product is not at all appealing and would presumably never be consumed. In other cases (e.g. nicely-hopped IPAs), the intermediate product is so appealing that distillation would probably never be performed.

Interesting note on the "spit" -- saliva contains enzymes that crack starches into sugars. Thoroughly-chewed starchy food is almost all sugars before it hits the stomach, where bolted starchy food can still be relatively indigestible starches....which your gut fauna will then gleefully turn into methane.
But I digress -- for brewing / fermenting purposes, a certain amount of spit worked into the starchy mass before the yeastie-beasties get into it can do a lot to improve your yield. Typically, this was provided by consecrated virgin hotties in your tribe, so that you could quaff the result without going, "ewwww....it's like being tongued by Aunt Jennie."

Note that "rum" MUST be made from molasses, the leftovers from sugar-processing, to be true rum. To make cachaça, you just squeeze a sugar cane and ferment it straight.

I don't have the industry report totals in front of me, but they stated that cachaça consumption outstripped whiskey and everything else except Vodka (Russian alcoholics drink constantly) and baijiu (Chinese don't rink so much, but there are 1.3 billion of them and counting).

I think what they do in Brazil is use the shitty low-quality butt-ends of the sugar cane that otherwise might be discarded to make the cachaça. The "heart" of the cane is for granulated sugar, molasses and rum.

I think what they do in Brazil is use the shitty low-quality
butt-ends of the sugar cane that otherwise might be discarded to make
the cachaça. The "heart" of the cane is for granulated sugar, molasses

No doubt -- but I was thinking: "staple crops -- wheat, corn, rice". They'd have enough acreage to put out some serious alcohol. But sugarcane? I was figuring that was a niche crop. Hell, in Brazil, I figured more acres would be devoted to pasturage than sugarcane. I understand that relatively minor tweaks in the world market for sugarcane allowed Russia to keep Cuba as a client state and are the true wealth of the Bacardi clan. Seems like something small and contained.....
......but #3 distilled beverage?!?!? There's more sugarcane around than I thought.

For reasons I still don't understand, my local supermarket growing up always had fresh 6-foot-long sugarcanes for sale in the produce department, for like 29˘ each. I'd buy one and spend days chewing it and spitting it out. Loved the stuff.
And yes, I had a LOT of cavities. I dreaded visits to the dentist.
Now that I think about it, there were a lot of folks from Louisiana descended from sharecroppers who had emigrated to California to work in the shipyards in WWII living nearby, and shopped in that store, and the clever manager probably stocked the sugarcane as a sort of nostalgia item for them. The only other people I ever saw buying them were old black ladies.

If you have a lot of irreplaceable stuff like personal photos and videos or critical financial and business documents, a BD-ROM (Blu-ray) burner can be a worthwhile investment. 25 GB on a single disc makes it easy to keep many backups in multiple locations. Some expense going in but no worse than the long term cost of off-site backups like Mozy.
If you shoot HD video the capacity is really needed. Otherwise, you may be able to get by with burning DVDs.

In the majority of external drive failures I've seen, the drive itself is fine but the electronics in the enclosure portion failed. The accumulation of bare drives that used to be in enclosures lead me to purchase a drive dock. The first one was a cheap USB 2.0 model but I now have a much better USB 3.0 that handles two drives at a time. The brand is Cavalry and it's usually around $40 but sometime deals turn up.
There are a few externals that cannot be extracted to be used as a bare drive due to integration of the SATA to USB bits but I've yet to run into one.

Nah, we've got this "family retainer" guy.....the BH's sister originally found him by virtue of being a social worker for an adjacent county and picking up his nephews.....but we started working with Roberto even before we bought this house.
A while back on this thread, people were talking about clearing ground with axes and saws.....Roberto would fit right in. I'll be talking about "we need a hole right here, about this big, and deep enough to put this in it -- let me go get some shovels and a cart" -- and when I get back, he's cleared half the hole with his bare hands. It's a serious challenge to try to keep ahead of him.
So, tomorrow is going to be some stuff that the BH decrees, and an 8-hour scramble to try to manage the feedramp for Roberto.

I am scheduled for injections on April 25 & second on May 9.
He could do it earlier next week but he injects a lot in a small area & it is four days of worse pain. I made appointments to ruin my weekends.
My best friend keeps calling to tell me to go on long term disability. I will consider it when I pay off my BMW.
The 1995 525 BMW saved my life & I had it from January 1996 until November 2011. I like new one but my favorite was that 1995 car.

I am thinking LTD may have tax advantages too. If the pain originates from the neck is it a vertebrae problem? If it is similar to lower back pain it is caused when the soft tissue between the bones collapses and caused the bones to pench on the nerves (IIANM),
I have neck pain if I go w/o my neck pillow for more than a few hours. I strained the neck muscles and probably flattened out that soft tissue when I fell down the stairs here. Aldo broke my left elbows in three places.
Have you tried using one of those neck pillows? You have to use it for a while, before the pain starts, or it plays "catchup".

I posted that a then new med is US helped her in 2005 & couldn't remember the name. It is Namenda & had success In Europe.
That was in 2005 & my mother passed away in 2011. There are probably newer drugs to now to try to halt destruction of brain, but it helped my mother nine tears ago.

Thanks for suggestion of neck pillow. I paid close to $100 for one ten years ago. Mt neck feels best, along with shoulder if I sleep completely flat, with just a very flat pillow.
I don't know how my mother did it, but she took out most of pillow stuffing & it's just enough to cushion neck but still be almost flat. She must have taken most of feathers out,
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I was almost a crib death many times. I cannot sleep in a bed on my back without feeling as if I can't breathe. I started sleeping on my couch years ago. I canyon sleep in bed unless I'm on my side. In 2002 I had to change sides due to lumpectomy & sentinel node & others being removed. I couldn't sleep on other side because that was Nerva pain.
I bought a Ekornes Stressless chair in December 2005. They had display in Prudential Center shopping center that month & they are supposed to be good for back & neck pain. I tried one & hated it. A few days later I tried another that fit me perfectly.
They come in large & medium sizes & maybe small. I have one that is perfect for me. I sleep in it most of the time.
They have increased prices every year despite economy. I think newer ones come with foot stool a tacked, but I'm not getting rid of perfect chair.
I have small living room, it's perfect color blue & I can't give it away because anyone that has sat in it is too big. I am not spending any $ except for what I have to.

Not during the summer usually unless I have to be. But in the winter fall spring I am open 1 or 2 SATs a month. I am on Duty 2 weekends a month so that is all I can be open. It's a neighborhood practice so I kinda have to be sometimes.

Thank you, but Ekornes chair, depending on which one you have & mine has just enough to eliminate need for pillow.
It's 40 degrees here & I have roses to plant. They are bareroot, they have nothing but woody growth. I have to at least go outside & soak in water. I wear neck collar to do anything strenuous, vacuuming,gardening & other things that are not strenuous to most people.
I lost a lot of roses this winter & haven't finished printing yet.
I have my late fathers Members Only jacket to wear outside. Unless I decide to go back to sleep.
We have long weekend here because of Boston Marathon,but I have to do payroll Monday from home because yesterday was Good Friday & I signed us up for Fidelity payroll in 2000. Our company was one of the first to use then for payroll.

Messiah is one of my favourites to perform. I wish people would realize it's an EASTER piece, though. Yeesh. Read the words.
Come to think of it, performing pretty much anything baroque is a heck of a lot of fun, beautiful, and sublime.

To me, Handel's Messiah has always been a beautiful and joyous work. I find it easy to believe that it was divinely inspired even though Handel was obviously musically brilliant.

Good Morning Morons. Today is Saturday, April 19, 2014. On this day in 1775 the battle of Lexington and Concord occurred in the American Revolutionary war. It was hailed as the start of the war and made famous in a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson as the "shot heard 'round the world". In actuality shots were fired before this battle and, like most wars, it is difficult to pinpoint a single day, event, or battle as the start of the war. But after centuries of school children reading the poem aloud and crying out that phrase it has become the popular myth. In another 100 years the phrase will probably disappear because the amount of coverage the early patriot events get in history books is shrinking to minuscule paragraphs.

would be greatly appreciated. She has rather advanced cancer and is not
responding at all well to the latest therapy regimen. She continues to

In my praise of Handel, I did not mean any disrespect to Bach as he was also obviously musically brilliant and touched by God. I think I like Handel so much because the libretto is in English and intertwined with the KJV language.

To many local and for thAt matter Federal Officers think they are an unanswerable law unto themselves. Some local cops in my town think the laws, parking etc, don't apply to them and have said so with out any hesitation.
