Krauthammer: I No Longer Support Disclosure in Campaign Donations, Because Zealots Will Destroy Free Speech Rights By Ruining Lives and Wrecking Careers

I think this problem can be subsumed under my general political observation that "People are just awful."

And there's really no way around that, is there?

Best we can do is mitigate the harm by making government smaller, thus limiting the harm that people can inflict when they gather into Battleclans for Tribal Warfare.

And of course that's not happening any time soon.

[Full disclosure and complete transparency] used to be my position. No longer. I had not foreseen how donor lists would be used not to ferret out corruption but to pursue and persecute citizens with contrary views. Which corrupts the very idea of full disclosure.

It is now an invitation to the creation of enemies lists....

Sometimes the state itself does the harassing. The IRS scandal left many members of political groups exposed to abuse, such as the unlawful release of confidential data....

The ultimate victim here is full disclosure itself. If revealing your views opens you to the politics of personal destruction, then transparency, however valuable, must give way to the ultimate core political good, free expression.

Our collective loss. Coupling unlimited donations and full disclosure was a reasonable way to reconcile the irreconcilables of campaign finance. Like so much else in our politics, however, it has been ruined by zealots. What a pity.

The whole column is worth reading, but I can't quote it all, of course.

Kevin D. Williamson has more thoughts on the related issue of the militarization of the speech police.

Down in Travis County, Texas, where the stink of cronyism has Republicans in the legislature and Democrats in the bureaucracies sniffing each others’ tails like opportunistic stray dogs, University of Texas regent Wallace Hall is facing the possibility of criminal prosecution for helping to expose the bipartisan scandal of Texas politicians’ seeking preferential treatment for friends and family in university admissions....

In a sane world, Wallace Hall would get a medal for bringing attention to wrongdoing by elected officials, but the university establishment and the political establishment relish their comfortable symbiosis.

Others dream of prosecution, too. The political class is infatuated with speech regulations (which we are expected to call “campaign-finance laws”) because its members harbor a self-interested desire to set the terms under which political contests are fought. That is corruption, and a particularly nasty sort of corruption at that: corruption dressed up as a reform crusade....

The irony here is that it is the ones doing the prosecuting are the ones who should be prosecuted. It is against the law to use IRS resources for political vendettas and to maliciously prosecute citizens to further partisan political interests. Those are serious crimes — serious because they pervert the fundamental relationship between citizen and state. But we are enduring what Sam Francis called “anarcho-tyranny,” a situation in which the government either refuses to or is unable to enforce its most fundamental laws — e.g. controlling the borders, ensuring that its revenue agents are not engaged in an unhinged political jihad with an eye toward stacking elections, etc. — while at the same time it seeks to regulate the minutiae of citizens’ lives with all the terrible moral ferocity of David Frum on a Tuesday afternoon espresso bender.

Meanwhile, Harry Reid -- who is more and more simply a monster -- continues making it clear that the Party of Government has personal interests, and it will stop at very little in vindicating those personal interests:

I note again that it is a scary thing when high-ranking officials of the Party of Government take challenges to their authority so personally.

You don't want a cop taking a small amount of attitude personally, and you sure as hell don't want the Majority Leader of the Senate doing so.

Or Sheldon Whitehorse of Rhode Island, who apparently took it quite personally indeed that Tea Party groups were seeking the same sort of tax status as myriad progressive groups.

That was the original intent of the founders but it was destroyed with the advent of the progressive era in the early 1900s. It was aided and abetted by the 14th amendment which destroyed the idea of the States.

10 the problem is conservative acquiesence to this because, for some reason, around 1991 or so the GOP signed an accord with the DNC agreeing to terms that:

1. no liberal should be punished or otherwise inconvenienced for breaking the law or acting like a dick; and
2 all conservatives must be on their best behavior at all times
2a because they will be mercilessly and humorlessly prosecuted; and
2b. any bad behavior on the part of conservatives, real or imagined, will implicated the whole movement.

I dunno, it didn't seem like a good idea then and it doesn't seem like a good idea now.

Perhaps we should start fighting back by:

not apologizing everytime a feminist gets upset
prosecute donk bad behavior
endlessly mock the left

instead of Romney's 2012 campaign slogan "Obama is awesome, but I am ok, so vote for me maybe?"

Actually, many of us Christians HAVE been standing firm, and have been fighting the good fight. We've been the ones reliable at the polls, we've been the ones reliably signing up for the military, we've been the ones championing freedom of conscience, and freedom of speech. We've been the one on the front lines of right to life and right to liberty. We've been the ones making the argument that rights are given by God and not the State.

So I'm not exactly sure what your argument is here.

One step further: host it in an offshore server, with as much PII as can be gathered--addresses, SSNs, names, addresses, and SSNs of family members, license plates, cell phone numbers & SIM data . . .

Basically, create a one-stop shop for anyone who wishes to hurt those people.

The Gospel is about the Messiah coming to save men and women from the consequences of sin. It's about the cross, the resurrection, salvation and redemption. It is about God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

I'm not going to quote chapter and verse to make the case, but the overall insistence on the dignity of the individual regardless of his station in life implies that human freedom is of paramount concern. When governments transgress against that freedom, they seek wrath. And they should get it.

103 Good Friday indeed. I got a job.

Posted by: Dog One is open at April 18, 2014 06:26 PM (MnC2P)

104 I posted this on the morning thread. A little more thought. It's kinda like the reverse of the "First they came for the Jews..." In this case, it's like they said, well, you didn't care when they came for me, so why should I care when they come for you?

Begin the tl;dr part, but give it a read anyway:

I went to an Easter play presented in a black church last Saturday. It has weighed on my heart, since. I know, these things happen for a reason.

This play was eye opening to me. Because the story is the story - the source material is the same. But watching how this was presented, to hear what was emphasized, I learned a lot. About the community that was the audience, and about the story itself.

I'll point to just one thing. The Sanhedrin brought Jesus to Pilate and asked Pilate to put him to death. In all the years of seeing and hearing the Easter story, here was something I had never heard - it has always been there, I have somehow missed it.

From the KJV, John 19:6:

...Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

I always understood that Pilate was a reluctant player in the Easter story, that he did not want to be drawn into the local politics of the temple, and afterward, he washed his hands of the consequences. But I had missed that Pilate himself thought that Jesus was innocent.

This was a new view to me. Rome is always the heavy in The Greatest Story Ever Told. We hear it every time in the Nicene Creed, that He "was crucified under Pontius Pilate." Which is true -but....

It was enlightening to me. Rome and Pilate are not exonerated here - far from it. And that this African American congregation made a big deal of that explains a lot to me.

Rome does not crucify Jesus because they are trying to stomp out the burgeoning following around Christ - they do it capriciously, to quell local unrest, a part of a literal conspiracy to kill an innocent man. Their evil is not that are acting with bad intent, but rather that they are acting in the full knowledge that what they are doing is wrong, but do it anyway.

Now, Morons don't come here for theology, even on Good Friday. How does this apply to the current crisis?

It helps me understand how African Americans look at the American Experience as something alien to them. That the US Government is in many ways like Rome - capricious, and doing what is wrong even when they know it is wrong. And part of the - wait for it - "fundamental transformation of America" is that we are all getting a taste of that. I don't think that Obama and Holder consciously are saying, hey, let's give white people a taste of their own medicine, but I don't doubt there is some amount of their experience informing them.

Listening to Glenn Beck over the past few days, he has made some points about this whole Nevada ranch thing. His main deal over it is that people showed up with guns to face down the government, and he is pushing non-violent resistance. And he asks many times - are you facing attack dogs and fire hoses? Is it anything like what African Americans faced? (An aside - my mother was in a restaurant in St. Augustine, Florida when there was a disturbance. Black people were trying to get in, there were police with dogs and cattle prods. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was arrested and jailed. This is living memory. Hard to believe that the Mustang is 50 years old? Well, same year.)

I think this is one reason why people try to say that reaction to Obama policies is racist. I know, it is a default and is used by white liberals to mau mau people - but I think that there are many people, many African Americans, who are thinking - well, now that the government is capricious and unfair to you you say something about it.

There may be something to it. I used to be a "law and order" (not the TV show) guy - crack down on criminals. But after having my own tangles with the legal system (divorce and traffic tickets!) I know it isn't like you see on TV. It is a capricious and unfair system. It isn't about finding the truth. And cops lie, and nobody cares. Judges I am sure know that the cops are lying on the stand, but they go along with it. Coming into contact with the "justice" system opened my eyes. I didn't complain about it until it affected me. Did it just suddenly become bad, or is not just no longer deniable to me?

I don't know. I didn't turn into some bleeding heart liberal. But I can see why people might think and say the things they do. And it makes me think that there is something to, this, too:

Criminal Justice Reform: The GOP’s Best Hope to Reach Minority Voters

http://alturl.com/zppxv

There is no question anymore that law enforcement, and our legal system, are unfair, and out of control. And it isn't just that way to Tea Party organizations applying for tax exempt status.

But doesn't the Left do their thing by hurting lower-level people who disagree with such shrieking frenzy that anyone higher-ranking just keeps quiet if they disagree with the Left. Sure, Rush and other high-profile names don't keep quiet and the Left rarely even scuffs them because they're big names, but people lower on the totem pole just stay quiet. Brendan Eich had just gotten to the level where he was both big enough to matter and small enough to take down, that's why he was targeted. That's where the Right fails, at least one of the places, they don't "pick a target, freeze it" and whatever else that blabbermouth Alinsky said, at the lower-level. 143 Where I went to school, the Chaplain explained that the "turn the other cheek" verse is not about meekness, but defiance. Like, you hit me on my cheek? Well, here, hit the other one too!

Back in those days, before toilet paper, a person had a 'clean' hand and an 'unclean' hand. (This practice actually continues to this day in parts of the mid-east.) Back to the point, to 'turn the cheek' forced the person to use their 'clean' hand to strike you, the filthy beast you are -- thereby defiling their clean hand.

My point is why are you constantly losing? Or, if you are not losing, why do the comments here always seem to refer to a feeling of losing? Is it that every political faction in America thinks it's losing and you reflect that general trend? I take a more philosophical stance toward America and don't really care if it continues to exist or not, but it is a fascinating case study in a people letting its country slip into the hands of an ideology diametrically-opposed to its foundation. That happens a lot, it just hadn't happened here yet, until now. Aren't you in the least bit curious in doing a post-mortem?

"To the extent that signers want to avoid First Amendment activities like picketing by asserting their own First Amendment rights, the signers don't have a leg to stand on."
This is the important issue for me. Frankly, when Prop 8 passed in CA I wanted to know everyone that supported that offensive act in order to make sure I in no way contributed to their well being. That should be my right as a citizen.
Now, if I wanted to know it so that I could go and commit violence against them, then I would be a criminal and there are criminal laws to deal with that.
In a republic, laws are created by representatives accountable to the voters. But when you farm out that duty to ballot initiatives, who do you hold accountable? I'm not saying my side has to win every vote, but I want the option to picket and oppose those that voted against me.

148 *Rant Alert*

Not to sound like a male chauvinist, but a man has to do what a man has to do. If you cannot stand by your principles, then you have none. Should you wish your voice heard, then you must absorb the requisite slings and arrows of opposition: there must be a hill to die on; otherwise, life is a but a mere struggle for subsistence, and nobility dies instead. If you cannot bear the sting of the protestations of the foolish and self-indulgent, then be quiet, as you have no grounds for complaint: did not the Roman Empire progress, in but a generation, from the persecutions (and price-fixing) of Diocletian to the edicts of Constantine without the spilled blood of countless martyrs?

Would people like Boehner, McConnell, McCain, et al (and, yes, even Krauthammer) learn this lesson, we wouldn't be in such a national predicament, because the Republic ended when a man was too afraid to punch another man in the nose for a baseless effrontery without getting himself sued.

It's time to take a stand, fellows. You wanna see my donations? Have at it, and good luck to you, because I've made my peace and know who I am.

As such she's never really had to face any sort of reality and it's just possible she was totally unaware of the hurt and damage she did in Viet Nam.

There's no excuse for Harry Reid.

He's an exemplar of Boss Hogg like rural county execs/supervisors who throw their weight around and turn local small government into their personal fiefdom.

They're to be found all over the country (probably all over the world) and that he has the added fillip of being the most powerful Senator just adds to the frisson that his declaration that "this isn't over" and "they're domestic terrorists" is filled with portent of bad things happening to those at the center of the controversy.

He should be removed from office as soon as possible. He has a look of cruelty and that he enjoys making people fear him and having his threats carried out. The typical small town tyrant/bully.

179 It all makes sense...when you understand that Barky was never a 'Community Organizer'.

He was an Agitator.

The Organizers brought him in to stir up crowds.
Barky couldn't organize a pissing match.

We are being Provoked.
We are being pushed and provoked on a daily basis.

Bullying...is another word for this.

They want people to become violent, so they can use the fullbrutal force of their powers against us.

The reason why the Bundy Ranch standoff sticks in their craws...is that it was basically 'passive resistance' that won the day.

Yes, some of the supporters and cowboys had arms with them...
But they didn't use them.
And the government goons were far more heavily armed than the citizen-supporters were.

This is why they backed down.
They knew that it would be seen as 'overkill' if they fired first.

When you lose your temper with someone who is bullying you...the bully usually wins.

Barky and Holder are like the bullies in school, who would start shit and then go..."What! I didn't do anything."

So I guess what I'm saying is, we should stay frosty and not give them what they want.
