Boehner: Amnesty 2014 Or Bust

I'll just leave this here without further comment.

Speaker John Boehner and other senior House Republicans are telling donors and industry groups that they aim to pass immigration legislation this year, despite the reluctance of many Republicans to tackle the divisive issue before the November elections.

Many lawmakers and activists have assumed the issue was off the table in an election year. But Mr. Boehner said at a Las Vegas fundraiser last month he was "hellbent on getting this done this year," according to two people in the room.

Added: Senator who partnered with Democrats to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill that Obama would sign in a heartbeat, fumbles and flips around on amnesty some more.

“I think this administration has probably reached the point of irreconcilable differences with regards to trust, particularly among Republicans,” Rubio explained during a conversation at a Texas Tribune event on Tuesday.

...

“There is a true distaste--and rightfully so--for comprehensive pieces of legislation,” he said.

Rubio explained that he believed that immigration would always have to be addressed in a sequential process.

“It doesn’t happen all at once, but I think it’s a lot better than continuing to go in circles here, and this all-or-nothing approach that for 14 years has led to nothing.”

So....we're just supposed to forget that less than a year ago he was the GOP poster-boy for what he's now saying is bad policy?

Rubio should stick to giving speeches about how much he loves America. He's very good at that. He's not quite as good at actual politics.

As Churchill once said about returning to the Conservative Party after abandoning it for the Liberal Party, "Anyone can rat, but it takes a certain amount of ingenuity to re-rat.". Rubio, who has gone from amnesty opponent to supporter and is now trying to get back to opponent, does not have Churchill's level of ingenuity.

If you haven't figured it out yet, Democrats want obamnesty only if Republicans pass it with them.

Amnesty will kill the GOP in the long run.
But Republicans passing amnesty will kill the party instantly; which is what the D's are angling for.

I heard of an anchor baby (Mexican parents) who needs a heart transplant. Baby has Medicaid from one state, a state that does not have a heart transplant program for children. Transplant surgeons in another state discussing what to do with the baby, made the comment to the effect of, "That state's Medicaid program doesn't treat us very well, the baby should go somewhere else for the transplant." Oooh, oooh, hot potato, hot, hot, hot.

108 There are two groups who want amnesty:

Agribusiness and chicken processors to hold down wages (and that has always been the main draw for open borders, even in the early 1900s.

Democrats who see a new endless supply of voters.

Those high-tech H1B visas that folks talk about are a different animal all together. They are NOT amnesty, but the high tech companies want them for the same reason; hold down wages. Currently we have have a LOT of unemployed high tech workers. There is no reason what-so-ever to import another batch except for cheap labor.

Or...

He might recognize that the argument isn't whether the U.S. is going to deport 12 million illegals. That simply isn't going to happen no matter how much screaming and yelling goes on. Then the conversation shifts to what to do with all these people. The democrats want to make them citizens as quickly as possible. Republicans are willing to grant legal status, but absolutely not citizenship.

There is also the possibility that Boehner sees that, done correctly, immigration reform can end up better than the status quo.

There will necessarily be a long path to citizenship that places current illegals far behind the ones doing things legally now.

The polling is already done and the fairness of this plays well.

Most current illegals won't bother with citizenship route because of time, complexity and cost.

Posted by: Phinn at April 18, 2014 11:05 AM (i5GO4)"

If it were Agri-biz, you would think that makers of farm machinery would be bankrolling a push to tighten the border and make farm labor more expensive, creating an economic incentive to substitute capital equipment for labor. The University of California at Davis Agricultural Engineering program is famous for creating these sort of machines. If the border with Mexico was closed with something like the Berlin Wall, John Deer, International and Massey Ferguson would be putting on third shifts to manufacture enough of them.

Interesting thought - are the plants that make farm equipment unionized? If so, why are the unions not looking out for the interests of their members by improving demand for their products?

You have to understand Unionism

Members of a union fare better when the majority of their neighbors are NOT in a union.

Because THEN they have the money advantage. They make more money than the norm for the area.

Unions LOVE illegal workers (except in union jobs) as that lowers the wages and prices for goods and services which raises the standard of living for Union workers.

Unions are ONLY good for the Union members. It's a lie that they make the country/community better.

And yes... there is a solution.... its to enforce the Identity theft laws already on the books.... catch them telling lies on Official documents... tell them they have a court date but that we will not pursue them over international lines... they WILL self deport.

Posted by: Romeo13 at April 18, 2014 11:44 AM (84gbM)

183 I get the impression that Boehner is trying to play both sides here.

To the pro-amnesty big business donors: Keep the money coming, we're totally going to do something.

To the voters: Well, we would do something, but we can't because Obama can't be trusted to enforce the law. Blame him.

The problem with the GOP being a pro-business party is that they sometimes act like a pro-business party. Even when they shouldn't.

What will probably happen is what has happened already- the House passes something less than "comprehensive immigration reform", the Senate tacks on amnesty, it goes nowhere in the House.

Because if it's done right, current illegals could be deported immediately if they don't register and get permanent legal status.

Once it's established that any current illegal can get permanent residency just by applying and passing the background check, only those with criminal backgrounds will opt out. During the writing of the legislation, a quick path to deportation can be established for foriegn criminals.

There are other reasons it's better to get these people out in the open and it can all be accomplished in immigration reform.

And yes... there is a solution.... its to enforce the Identity theft laws already on the books.... catch them telling lies on Official documents... tell them they have a court date but that we will not pursue them over international lines... they WILL self deport.

Good luck finding Americans willing to do manual labor who aren't meth heads.

In the oil business you have two kinds of roughnecks:

i. Mexican workers who are fantastic laborers
ii. white trash meth heads

Immigrants aren't "taking your job". Name how many white people want to go break out pipe in Texas in the summer? It's about zero. The uneasy fact is our economy can't be sustained without hispanic labor, but Leftists want to capitalize on hispanics for votes.

Keep them illegal; they won't vote, but they'll still contribute to the economy by providing cheap labor (that you wouldn't do anyways likely).

AND

2) The GOPe does this in direct opposition to their alleged "base." So whatever votes they DO gain are more than negated by the number of votes they're going to fucking lose from disgusted former supporters who are sick of being the beaten housewife in this relationship.

A happy story for you: I had listened to years and years of endless babble from my brother in law about how great Canada was because of their free healthcare and no gun violence and how tolerant they are to people who just don't feel like working. In 2004, he vowed to move to Canada if Bush won re-election. Brother in law then looks into becoming a Canadian citizen and is disappointed to find out that the Canadian government was not as excited to have him as he had hoped. The Canucks were concerned about this not-liking-to-work habit he had.

I giggled.

260 So we have Cantor telling obum no way then this....they're def up to something....most likely selling out there supposed values. Just cannot for the life of me figure out why do this when we have such a good chance at getting the senate.

They're getting pressure from business donors and are afraid that the issue remaining unresolved will continue to hurt them with the growing Latino demographic.

Passing amnesty would be a mistake, but the way they're looking at it doing so would placate the Chamber of Commerce types while denying the Dems the chance to wield it against them.

The GOP needs to frame this less as anti-illegal and more pro-American worker. That won't sit well with business donors though.

Posted by: Hollowpoint at April 18, 2014 12:03 PM (SY2Kh)

261 There are 233 Republicans in the House now.

Any amnesty talk--which, if it is to happen--will come later in the year, closer to election time.
Meaning such will favor the more conservative Republicans who'll promise to oppose amnesty.

There are already reports of some 50 Republicans on-board with kicking Boehner out.

67 more and he is gone.

Math so easy, I'm sure even a dumb ass like him can figure it out.

The one and only constructive thing you can do to stop amnesty is to get your Congressman on record as promising to vote against Boehner if he brings an amnesty bill to the floor.

263 FWIW I've been on both sides of the immigration issue.

My wife and I are going through getting her green card, and it's overly complicated and expensive. The government presumes you guilty until proven innocent, and you basically have to shell out thousands of dollars on immigration lawyers and do pages of paperwork. Hell, the leviathan bureaucracy of government makes legal immigration so miserable it doesn't take a genius to see why so many people do it illegally.

On the other side of the coin a drunk illegal mexican crashed his truck into my mom's house and narrowly avoided killing her while she slept. He fled the scene without checking if he'd hurt anyone, passed out, was taken to the hospital by police, got free treatment, then was promptly released and slipped under the radar. He only got caught again like 4 years later to finally stand trial, and he apparently had a string of similar offenses. The government basically plays catch and release with illegals who commit dangerous crimes, and it's fucking unfair to Americans.

Keep them illegal, deport the criminals, and make legal immigration simpler please.

Boehner may feel the same, but I have more cynicism with them. I have this feeling that they want to do it more to simply spite the conservative base - to show who's boss so to speak. Legally, they have to be paid a "prevailing wage" which can be interpreted very loosely. What companies get from H1B workers isn't so much cheaper bodies, it's almost 100% loyalty. They're stuck with their sponsor for 3 years. Indentured servitude basically. So no matter how shitty you treat them, their only options are take it or go back home. Transferring an H1B between employers is really a pain in the ass and rarely done.

Shortage of Tech Pros my eye.....

The cost of regulatory compliance has become oppressive and hostile to businesses. Since they (like we) have no control over the many DC bureaus, they seek to control costs by reducing wages. They see cheap immigrant labor as the way out.

Again, our own government is working against the interests of the average citizen. We have no representation, but plenty of taxation and regulation.

Wouldn't you come here illegally if you were a young Mexican who wanted to make a living? Why the hell wouldn't you when you can live like a king in America mowing lawns compared to the shit hole that is Mexico. One of our closest family friends was an illegal Mexican who worked on our family farm, and eventually we helped him to become a permanent resident and get a better job. He now has an extremely intelligent daughter going to college. That's living the American dream, and it was only possible for him by bypassing the leviathan bureaucracy by coming illegally.

So I'm not offended by people who do it illegally, because I can sympathize with them. I am offended by the government turning a blind eye to the illegals who are criminals who get the "catch and release" treatment. Like the drunk Mexican who nearly killed my mother; they all but literally let him go, did not even try to keep tabs on him.

There's no kind way to explain this: Americans are too fucking dumb to do science anymore. Not so much dumb, as just extremely poorly educated in math and science.

At the university where I got my PhD the only American faculty were +60 years old. All the youngblood were europeans or south americans.

Ask one of them what their undergraduate experience was like. They'll tell you their physics degree consisted of nothing but physics and math classes. Contrast that with a typical degree at an american university, where 3/5 courses for a physics degree are multiculturalism, english, public speaking, history, etc.

And I'm not exaggerating on this. From personal conversations with a department chairman and professors, I learned that one particular physics graduate school I was at was giving preferential admission to American born applicants. You read that right: essentially affirmative-action for Americans, because various people in that particular university system were becoming concerned about the extreme low representation of Americans in the physics grad program.

363 Peoria takes twitter jokes serious.

The Police Raided My Friend's House Over a Parody Twitter Account | VICE United States http://www.vice.com/read/ the-police-raided-my-friends-house-over-a-parody-twitter-account via @VICE

Jon Daniel woke up on Thursday morning to a news crew in his living room, which was a welcome change from the company he had on Tuesday night, when the Peoria, Illinois, police came crashing through the door. The officers tore the 28-year-old’s home apart, seizing electronics and taking several of his roommates in for questioning; one woman who lived there spent three hours in an interrogation room. All for a parody Twitter account.

Yes, the cops raided Daniel’s home because they wanted to find out who was behind @peoriamayor, an account that had been shut down weeks ago by Twitter. When it was active, Daniel used it to portray Jim Ardis, the mayor of Peoria, as a weed-smoking, stripper-loving, Midwestern answer to Rob Ford. The account never had more than 50 followers, and Twitter had killed it because it wasn't clearly marked as a parody. It was a joke, a lark—but it brought the police to Daniel's door. The cops even took Daniel and one of his housemates in for in-depth questioning—they showed up at their jobs, cuffed them, and confiscated their phones—because of a bunch of Twitter jokes.

Now Daniel’s panicking.

“I’m going to fucking jail,” he told me yesterday when he was on a break from his job as a line cook. “They’re going to haul me away for this shit.”

Drew,
While no one likes a blind cheerleader for the GOP, do you really feel proud to continue the conservative civil war? All posts like this do is drain Republican enthusiasm, increase our apathy, and turn less Republicans out to the polls. Where democrats then crush us and we have more progressive rule and the country continues its downward spiral to destruction.
We would havewon in 12 if Republicans were enthusiastic about Romney, but instead people like you who are blinded by the need for pure position purity felt the need to criticize him and lower Republican turnout.
We are conservatives. We are suppose to judge actions not by their intentions, but by their results. Your intention may be to fight for the perfect candidate, but the result is you let the progressives win. They benefit from this, not us.
So why don't you start hyping pluses instead of harping on negatives?
For example, Boehner killed the planned immigration reform. If he wanted it to happen as written,it would have. Because he killed it, now he gets to dictate the terms. And immigration reform does need to be done on our terms, not the democrats, to get a secure border.

Dude, 8 years of GW Bush left us with more debt, more government spending than when he found it. In the long-run GW Bush administrations will bankrupt just as well as Obama's.

The problem isn't that Republicans can't win. The problem is that WHEN THEY DO WIN THEY DO NOTHING. Passing a tax break should not be a enough to win the praise of conservatives, and there aren't enough tax breaks in the world that can dig us out of the hole we are in. We have a massive government leviathan that is inefficient at all levels of government, and both establishment republicans and dems are responsible for that.

"Dude, 8 years of GW Bush left us with more debt, more government spending than when he found it. In the long-run GW Bush administrations will bankrupt just as well as Obama's. "

That's simply not true. Bush was bad, but Obama has spent much more, and debt to GDP is much higher these days. We'd be in much better shape if we had a GWB than an Obama.

"We have a massive government leviathan that is inefficient at all levels of government, and both establishment republicans and dems are responsible for that."
Republicans are determined to shrink it. Democrats are determined to enlarge it. Even if Republicans try, and fail, to shrink government it is going to grow much less rapidly than under Dems.

Bush left the debt bigger than he found it. Quibbling over whether it would be as big as Obama's is irrelevant, as both paths lead to financial disaster. Bush or Obama would bankrupt America. This is a fact.

"Republicans are determined to shrink it."

Can you explain the shrinking that Bush did? How much did "compassionate conservatism" shrink the government? How did Bush's expansion of Medicare shrink the government?

On the local level, I come from a small essentially 100% Republican town. Our police force is ridiculously, ridiculously too large and over-funded for the small crime-free town it's supposed to serve. My town ended up this way because gullible Reps want to be "tough on crime" and so sign onto any measure that expands the size and power and funding of the police force.

Hey how about this?...

Lizze Warren (Lie-a-watha, fauxcohauntas) and Boehner (lying , crying, fake tanboy) on the same ticket.?

Would you vote for that?

403 It's fucking embarrassing that anyone would compare Bush and Obama or GOP and democrats, and conclude they're the same.. You people a fucking nuts

404 "according to two people in the room."

Hmmm. WHY would someone need anonymity to say that? Unless it's just made up, of course.

Already the THIRD "Boehner is going to betray us on immigration" scare this year, and it is only April. Nice work.

When there is a committee hearing, or a bill actually marked up, and not just Diaz-Balart talking about drafting one (seriously, that's not how the House works), wake me.

405 "Republicans are determined to shrink it."
-----

I'm going to sue you for the fucking hernia I just got from laughing at this preposterous shit

Agenda 21
Medicare expansion
PARTIOT act and Homeland Security Dept
EPA

just to name 4 ridiculous government expansions under RINO GOP leadership

But We need to get with the program and just mindlessly support any candidate of the appropriate party, just like the Donks

I despise collectivism under any name and there are plenty of GOP "leaders" who are collectivists, I won't vote for a collectivist simply because of his/her party labels, That would make me a collectivist Donk in GOP garb sort of like Chris Christie

406 "Me: Hey, Thor, I need to borrow Mjolnir for a bit.

Thor: You can't lift it.

Me: Fine, then do me a solid and wack Boener with it for me.

Thor: Dude is impervious to it. I've even hit him with lightning and it just darkens his tan a bit.

Me: furk..."

Loki: What can I say? If John Boehner didn't exist, I would have to invent him. Oh, wait...

407 The LOSERship of the Stupid Party, once again planning to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Minimally, there's no reason to do immigration reform when the Dem's are in charge of 2/3rds of the process.
