Democrat Senators Rip Golden Globes For Featuring Incidental Shots of Celebrities Puffing on E-Cigs

Remember, this is the party that doesn't want to control free speech or your own personal choices.

Except for speech and choices they don't like, of course.

Four Democratic senators are criticizing the celebrities who were shown during Sunday night’s Golden Globes Awards puffing away on e-cigarettes.

“The Golden Globes celebrates entertainers who are an influence on young fans,” wrote Sens. Dick Durbin, Richard Blumenthal, Sherrod Brown and Edward Markey on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, this year, many young viewers saw notable displays of e-cigarette use throughout the awards show, including the opening monologue and repeated shots of celebrities smoking e-cigarettes,” the letter continued. “In light of studies showing that exposure to on-screen smoking is a major contributor to smoking initiation among youth, we are troubled that these images glamorize smoking and serve as celebrity endorsements that could encourage young fans to begin smoking traditional cigarettes or e-cigarettes.”

Sunday night’s ceremony briefly showed actor Leonardo DiCaprio and actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus smoking e-cigarettes during the broadcast.

As many have noted, the party which is broadly (often covertly) in favor of drug legalization is pretty firm on the point that a harmless method of nicotine delivery should be outlawed, lest it serve as a "Gateway Drug" to the stronger stuff, such as cigarettes.

These clowns remind me of The Little Sister, from the Philip Marlowe detective novel.

"Come on up and let's have a look at you," I added. "If you're in my kind of trouble, I can give you a pretty good idea--"

"I have to know something about you," the small voice said very firmly. "This is a very delicate matter, very personal. I couldn't talk to just anybody."

"If it's that delicate," I said, "maybe you need a lady detective."

"Goodness, I didn't know there were any." Pause. "But I don't think a lady detective would do at all. You see, Orrin was living in a very tough neighborhood, Mr. Marlowe. At least I thought it was tough. The manager of the rooming house is a most unpleasant person. He smelled of liquor. Do you drink, Mr. Marlowe?"

"Well, now that you mention it--"

"I don't think I'd care to employ a detective that uses liquor in any form. I don't even approve of tobacco."

"Would it be all right if I peeled an orange?"

Spoiler alert: The Little Sister turns out to not be quite so innocent and prudish as she can pretend to be when it suits her.

Rather like the Left, which can turn on a dime from untrammeled license and hedonism to furious moral scolds depending on whether it's their own pleasures under discussion or yours.

They don't ask for much: Just for your to think, believe, speak, act and be just like them in all ways.

17 Thank you, Ace...for calling them "Democrat Senators", instead of 'democratic'.

I hate seeing the Dems called 'democratic'.
They aren't.

It's actually more grammatically correct, I think, to use 'Democrat' in the descriptive or identification sense...rather than use 'Democratic'.

'Republican' on the other hand, works for both...so it is never changed.

77 Yes, e-cigs have nicotine. My cousin with lung cancer smokes one of them about once a day. It basically delivers liquid nicotine in a water vapor. She asked her cancer doctors about it. They said they were less harmful than cigarettes because you don't get the tar and the 7000 other chemicals in cigarette smoke--BUT they were still harmful, but, for someone unable to completely quit, one e-cig a day or two is the best option. That is a real number--cigarette smoke has over 7000 identifiable chemicals in it.

My Aunt smoked all during her pregnancies because it was not known yet to be an issue--one daughter smoked and the other one wisely never started. The one who smokes started at age 12 with a cigarette from her Mom's purse. Quoting her, "It was the worst thing I had ever tasted, while simultaneously being the best thing I had ever tasted. I knew after those first nasty few puffs that I would be smoking for the rest of my life."

95 E-cigs harmless? Bullshit! Last night I plugged my vision spinner into my 12 port USB hub and it knocked out the KVM keyboard and mouse connection! I couldn't figure it out at first, but when I touched the spinner, it was hotter than a popcorn fart. I snatched it, but still no keyboard/mouse. Fortunately, I had another machine I could remote from so I was able to save and close all my app work, but can you imagine the horror if I was a normal "one machine" geek? I think not!

98 Started vaping 3 years ago, haven't had an analog cig since. I vape everywhere, including on airplanes. When people notice, I try to sell 'em on the concept. If they say, "It looks too much like smoking," I ask, " Do you tell your kids not to breathe on a cold day because 'It looks too much like smoking?' It's the same thing." That usually shuts them up. If not, I tell them it's nothing more than an atomizer filled with MYOFB.

I've only had one idiot ask me what MYOFB stands for.

I'm not a smoker but after watching a lot of movies in the 90s, I wanted a cigarette. I did chalk up the excessive on screen smoking to bad directing and writing. But now that I think about it it might have been to placate the actors who almost all chain smoke. Now, you rarely see smoking in film and pap photos unless it's Lohan who continues to be a baaaaaaad girl.

Yeah, but drinking isn't as wicked as smoking.
See, you have to consider all of the guys who go out, smoke a bunch of cigarettes and then go home and beat their wives.
Or the drivers who smoke and get in all those accidents.
Or the women who, after having a cig or two, end up being date-raped by monsters of the patriarchy.
Or the nicotine fiends who lose their jobs, lie in the gutter, and end up in a rubber room with DTs.

So? A lot of people didn't drink their paychecks.

Calling it a "societal" problem is collectivism, plain and simple. I'm sure it sucked for their wives and children, but that's not a good reason to punish people who could drink responsibly.

Incidentally, before Prohibition bars and taverns were almost exclusively male preserves. It didn't become "cool" for women to go to nightclubs and speakeasies until the 1920s, when it was illegal.

And that is probably why he objects to e-cigs. Some one other than the government is handling the money so the graft stream is unavailable to Durbin and his buddies.

BTW, Ace, I owe you and CDR M a thank you for that e-cig post a couple of years back. I bought on your and CDR M's recommendation and within a couple of weeks had given up cigs entirely. 183 This e-cig tax grab reminds me of the NY State loophole that allowed tobacco shops to install automated cigarette rolling machines. The customers used electronic entry devices to enter the number of cigarettes, flavor, type of filter (or non-filter), cigarette length, etc. The machine would then manufacture the cigarettes and then charge the customer a bulk tobacco tax, which is much smaller than vendor cigs. NY State changed the law to tax the machine cigarettes at the higher rate, and that was the end of automated cigarette machines.

185 The motive for opposing cigarette smoking of it being bad for your health was forgotten a long time ago. It's now morally wrong to smoke cigarettes, and has been for some time. To anyone who thinks about it for a minute, there's no difference to health between wearing a patch and "smoking" an e-cig, but they don't think about it.

195 Anecdotal evidence and a few preliminary studies suggest that e-cigs actually help people quit. I smoked a pack and a half for 35 years. And I never thought that I would be able to quit. On a whim, I started smoking e-cigs and after about 3 weeks I had no desire for either e-cigs or the real thing. It's been 14 months and no relapse.

The PC crowd, as always, are a bunch of idiots.

196 I thought the entire point of ecigs is that you get the nicotine without
the nasty stuff in cigarettes that gives you cancer. So shouldn't
people be happy that celebs are encouraging the safer option?

It's even worse than you think. The e-juice comes in different nicotine strengths, from high to zero, so you can step down gradually and eventually eliminate nicotine altogether. That Durbin and Bloomberg and their ilk are objecting is awfully transparent. As was said upthread, it's about money and control, not the noble, worn-out 'for the children' meme.

198 It's time to develop the "stealth" e-cig. Adapt a nasal cannula like so many poor folks with COPD are obliged to use. Build the vaporizer into the same style of housing as the O2 cylinder normally goes. You could use in bars, restaurants, and airplanes, even theaters, and nobody would suspect, unless perhaps the fumes were heavily scented.

209 Actually, a stealth e-cig is neither a new nor a difficult concept. I have some mechanical mods that have no lights on them. Using a higher percentage of PG will decrease visible vapor. A second inhalation of air will dissipate more, as will holding it in your lungs longer.

I want to see someone stealth vape some sub-ohm 100% VG liquid.
