The Internet in a Picture

So how well do you know your memes?

Well a good number of these have appeared on this very site. So if you can't recognize at least 5, you may need to start spending your evenings at the AoSHQ study hall. And yes - this will be on the final exam.

Answer key here.

Remembering Jonathon Winters

He died last week at age 87. He was a master of improv, wacky characters and physical comedy - enough so to be described as 3 stooges in one. Sadly most younger people have probably never seen or heard one of his performances.

Judge Orders NY Man's Guns Returned After Confiscation

First they came for guns apparently because he was on anxiety medication.

It was reported that the unidentified man was taking a prescription for anxiety.

The enforcement action started on March 29th when New York State Police asked the Erie County Clerk's Office to pursue revoking the man's pistol permit because he owned guns in violation of the mental health provision of New York's newly enacted guns law called the SAFE ACT.

But it turns out that - doh! - they got the wrong guy completely:

"They really pushed us to move quickly on this. We received a subsequent email from one of the State Police sargents making sure that we had taken these firearms away," said Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs.

The State Police information was reviewed by a Supreme court judge, and the man's pistol permit suspended and guns taken away.

But now it turns out that the information was wrong.

After further investigation, State Supreme Court Judge William Boller has ruled that the police information that was the basis for the action was "in error."

Justice Boller writing that the "individual named pursuant to the New York Safe Act was not in fact the above named Licensee."

Ashley Judd - Too Weird To Be A Senator?

Well that's the impression that Mother Jones left in an article that I think was supposed to be a puff piece by David Corn. But of course it's horribly sexist to take her own words seriously enough to actually judge her fitness for office based on them.

Yesterday Mother Jones's David Corn published an exposé that shows Judd to be every bit as peculiar as her vulgar Malthusian musings lead one to expect. "I freak out in airports," Corn quotes Judd as saying. "The last time I came home from a trip, I absolutely flipped out when I saw pink fuzzy socks on a rack. I mean, I can never anticipate what is going to push me over the edge."

Her ideas about religion are odd, too: "I have to expand my God concept from time to time," Corn quotes Judd as saying, "and you know particularly I enjoy native faith practices, and have a very nature-based God concept. I'd like to think I'm like St. Francis in that way. Brother Donkey, Sister Bird."

How Far Will a .22LR Kill You?

Pretty damn far - at least out to 400m or more. Bottom line is you don't want to get shot with a .22 - or really anything.

Great Moments in Science - Erectile Dysfunction

In 1983 psychiatrist Giles Brindley demonstrated that certain vasoactive compounds could cause spontaneous erections. It's one thing to talk about a treatment but it's another to actually demonstrate it:

Professor Brindley, still in his blue track suit, was introduced as a psychiatrist with broad research interests. He began his lecture without aplomb. He had, he indicated, hypothesized that injection with vasoactive agents into the corporal bodies of the penis might induce an erection. Lacking ready access to an appropriate animal model, and cognisant of the long medical tradition of using oneself as a research subject, he began a series of experiments on self-injection of his penis with various vasoactive agents, including papaverine, phentolamine, and several others.

...The Professor wanted to make his case in the most convincing style possible. He indicated that, in his view, no normal person would find the experience of giving a lecture to a large audience to be erotically stimulating or erection-inducing. He had, he said, therefore injected himself with papaverine in his hotel room before coming to give the lecture, and deliberately wore loose clothes (hence the track-suit) to make it possible to exhibit the results. He stepped around the podium, and pulled his loose pants tight up around his genitalia in an attempt to demonstrate his erection.

At this point, I, and I believe everyone else in the room, was agog. I could scarcely believe what was occurring on stage. But Prof. Brindley was not satisfied. He looked down sceptically at his pants and shook his head with dismay. 'Unfortunately, this doesn't display the results clearly enough'. He then summarily dropped his trousers and shorts, revealing a long, thin, clearly erect penis. There was not a sound in the room. Everyone had stopped breathing.

...The rest is history. Prof Brindley's single-author paper reporting these results was published about 6 months later.

16 Woot! ONT.

So today, last day of funemployment, I checked out a Pohl book out of the local library. It was one of those Gateway / Heechee books; it had "The Merchants of Venus" in it.

Anti-capitalist screed, mainly with reference to Texas. And the title was too cute by half.

Will return it with prejudice.

We created a group called 'Ettes of the Moron Horde and already have threads for gardening, and cooking, stain glass work, etc. along with the standard knitting and crocheting.

Best thing about the Razr is long battery life. Tho I never had an Iphone to compare, I have heard it's significantly better in that respect. It's on and I use it all day, and I only need to charge it once. I have been happy with everything about it, except the last upgrade has fucked up the text messaging AFAIC. 187 Conservative Monster, uuhh what don't I know? A lot of stuff. But you can blame Gaiman and Amano when they did that graphic novel between a monk and a kitsune. Lead to an interest. Plus the Serrated Edge novel Chrome Circle really heightened it.

The Black Kitsune of Japan, the stories around her are truly horrendous. She cut a lethal swath through the royal and imperial harems of India, China, and Japan before a monk finally stopped her.

Boulder toilet hobo: I'm considering getting Lasik and I think you were the person on here that had the bad experience with it. If so, what's your opinion? Do you think it was just bad luck in your case, or you got a bad surgeon, or the procedure itself?Posted by: rfichoke at April 14, 2013 10:06 PM (CcIvJ)

---------------
I got Lasik about 14 years ago. Thing is, it changes the shape of your corneas but not the lenses. In effect, mine wore off, and most people I know who got it are back wearing glasses.

Posted by: USS Diversity at April 14, 2013 10:13 PM (5wHPS)

190 Oh. Right... lasik.

I think my experience was atypical.

1. Research the place FULLY. Don't go to a place just because it's popular. If it's popular they might rush things.

2. If it's lasik, they're going to pull the cornea up and roll it back again. You need to be extremely careful in that first afternoon and evening. Don't move around much. Let someone else open the door for you. (PRK will be less risky here, because they'll just nuke the cornea itself.)

3. Follow all the instructions they give you. [this much I managed to do]

4. Don't poke your eyes, stay away from dust.

5. Probably should do this in the summer. Don't do it in cold / flu / infection season. Because shit happens and you want as little shit as possible.

Posted by: sven10077 at April 14, 2013 10:14 PM (LRFds)

192 OK, horde, I have a question I'd like you to consider and discuss for the book y'all have pushed me to write. It's very appropriate for today - well, today in a couple of hours.

The subject is federal taxes. Everybody hates them, but even a stripped-down government is expensive in this day and age, especially if we want our children to speak American.

I have a four-step program to eliminating the federal income tax. Coincidentally, this also should result in elimating the need for about 95% of the IRS.

Step 1 - Eliminate the 17th amendment (direct election of Senators). This returns control of Senator selection to the state legislature, who I believe can recall and sack them on a dime if required.

Step 2 - Everybody's favorite step, eliminate the federal income tax and about 95% of the IRS.

Step 3 - Congress totals up the budget expenses for the year, divides by the headcount in the last census, and sends each state a pro-rated bill to each state based on its headcount at last census.

Step 4 - Each state is responsible for deciding on how it will collect the tax Congress says it owes. The fight over percentages, types of tax, and everything else is now much more local and responsive. Since each state is sovereign, it should have free rein to confiscate that money however it sees fit.

Don't like your taxes but like your neighbor's across the state line? Push your state to do the same, or move.

Discuss.

There is no amending the Constitution for #17. Ken Buck mooted that idea when he ran for Senate here. He got spanked by Bennet. It doesn't matter that it's a good idea; even mentioning an antidemocratic amendment will get you tagged as "extreme".

There is just nothing that will fix this country excepting a restoration of old school monarchy. And you can't get people to vote for that.

Boomer,

I've been arguing for that same plan for the last couple of years. Let the states figure out how to collect the money and let them decide what works best. If California wants to do an income tax while North Dakota wants to tax oil companies, then let them do so and live with the results.

210 Well, y'all, I have convinced libs on WaPo that I am a female French anthropologist studying a report on WaPo in the Mist like my hero Dian Fossey. When I am not inserting facts about Gosnell the monster and the Grand Jury Report, I am calling fouls for overuse of liberal claptrap like "right-wingers" and "FOX." Some think it is a real report. I type really fast and mess with them. One dude earlier, in his spittle, called me a Wind Bat (he meant Wing Bat) and I therefore named their team the Wind Bats. I randomly award points and create utter chaos then blame BableFish translation.

Reinforcements have arrived from somewhere so I am calling it a night. But, considering a few fled again as they cannot abide the relentless mocking, and conservative opinions are allowed to float to the top, I figure I can unclench my fingers from keyboard as husband is wondering what I have been up to all weekend. I am so sick and tired of their abortion yapping this is the best I can do. Why I am doing it remains to be seen. However, my insertion to read the Grand Jury report linked in WaPo now has led some to the house of horrors that is Gosnell's "clinic."

Tomorrow is another day. I do hope I get something done like laundry. Pay close attention to liberal blogs, newspapers and MSNBC as this is about to get real this week. Thanks to Ace and other conservative bloggers, and Kristen Powers, they are being forced to go to this trial. Love y'all. Please lend a hand in this war if you have even a few minutes.

Hmm.. getting rid of the 17th amendment would be a good step. Problem is that the Federal Government is into so much crap that they shouldn't be into that I don't think there is a simple solution.

My first thought would be a law that requires any spending to be a bill of it's own that should stand on it's own merits. No more of this hiding all these pork projects by adding them into bills for necessary and important things like defense spending and if someone votes against it later saying it's because they hate children or some BS of that nature.

One of the other things that is missing from the equation is that the electorate by and large is almost completely uninvolved and uninformed. They have no idea that every time somebody "taxes the rich" their the ones that take it in the shorts. No clue about the fact that all of those taxes are passed onto the middle class in the form of higher wages, lower benefits, etc. Until you change that, were dead in the water.

Sadly I have to be honest, I don't see this getting fixed. I think it far more likely that the system will collapse under it's own weight at some point. Wish I didn't feel that way, but I do.

Posted by: StuckOnStupid at April 14, 2013 10:22 PM (/uS1W)

214
That was the Articles of Confederation model for tax collection.

The main problem was what to do if a state refused to pay. Personally, I think that would be a limited problem and that you'd mostly see haggling over the amounts, which would hopefully push for the Federal government to reduce its size. If a state did up and refuse to pay, then you could immediately suspend any recognition of official state documents. License plates, marriages, ID, etc. Make it painful for the citizens until they put pressure on their government to pay up.

Wait... What???

Posted by: The Political Hat at April 14, 2013 10:38 PM (Vk2pI)

257 CM,

May I point out something? You are required by law to register working, complete firearms.

You are in most cases not required to register the parts necessary for building one, and provided you learn a little bit of machining or know someone or can pay someone to do that for you, it is quite easy to obtain all the parts you need to assemble a fully working firearm.

Until it is assembled, it's not legally a firearm and none of the parts need to be registered individually. In a lot of ways it's shows the demons as controlling various cities almost exactly the way crime syndicates do.

They honestly quit name calling to the conservatives, the stupid immature redundancy. I even gave fouls for the use of Bush and Romney due to lack of originality.

Tonight they were behaving or fled. It is pretty weird. Perhaps I will do a real study of WaPo in the Mist. I got to practice my French as well. All in all it was funny (I pretended to be sort a female Sheldon from Big Bang when I could not translate acronyms like WMD on BableFish). I don't know what to think, but their repetitive bs name calling ended with the mocking. It could be due to them thinking I was taking names. My husband has decided I am insane (it took him a long time).

now I know the gun grabbers do want to steal our liberty, but this particular video is parody. and this isn't the first time that I've gotten an email from them citing some conspiracy to take away our rights when it was just really a joke or parody.

Mg burns very hot, but the pure metal doesn't require more than a butane lighter to get the reaction started. Yet another reason to stay away from any place that produces powdered metals, or caves full of jihadis.

Well it's been a roller coaster really - and a strange one. Wolverine did get accepted into the Academy, which is what he wanted more than anything. The downside is apparently BB caught him cheating on her - so they are now quits. The relationship had always been a bit on the rocky side but I guess she's really done this time. I don't have the whole story there and honestly I don't really want to know, but I don't really hear from him much anymore which is a little sad. I'm just trying to stay out of the middle of that one.

HB switched jobs and works more hours now, and her hours aren't very consistent so it makes it a little more challenging to get time together. My own job is going well and I'm finally getting my hours down to a manageable level.

HB and I share a domicile now, that was a huge step for me and something I really had to consider long and hard because of my daughter - Economically and in every other fashion it made perfect sense but I'm still responsible for setting a good example for my teen even though she doesn't live with me. So we had some hurdles to overcome there, I had a long chat with my baby bear about the whole thing. She was excited about the idea, she loves HB - but it was a long series of conversations anyway.

BB is staying with us till she gets on her feet again, having moved out of Wolverines place. This of course is driving my ex up the wall and back down the other side - I'm not sure what it is she thinks is going on over here but boy I get an earful every time I see her now. Just have to ride out the storm I guess... lol.

Worst part came about a month and a half or so ago when she and my daughter got in a huge fight over something silly, she says to the kid "Well why don't you just go live with your father, he seems to like having underage girls around" To which my daughter responded, "Mom, you were the one that cheated on him remember? And how old is your boyfriend anyway?"

Ya, that went over like a lead balloon. Kid ended up staying with me for almost 3 weeks till that one died down enough for her to go home again.. and naturally that was all my fault somehow.

But things are starting to get back on an even keel now. I feel a little better about the situation in general, a little better prepared should the worst come to pass.

410 On March 31, the day after Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife were found dead in their Forney home, someone sent an anonymous e-mail threatening additional attacks, sources tell News 8.

That e-mail was traced back to former Justice of the Peace Eric Williams, according to those sources.

Williams is the main suspect in the murder case, sources say. He is currently jailed on unrelated charges and being held on $3 million bond.

News 8 has learned that 20 weapons were recovered from a unit at a Seagoville self-storage locker in connection with the unsolved Kaufman County murders. Sources said the locker had been rented on behalf of Eric Williams.

The kid absolutely delights in ticking off her mother. The divorce wasn't easy for her and she despises the boyfriend, so whenever they get into any kind of a spat it gets ugly quick. She knows where all of her mom's soft spots are and she has no compunction against hitting them hard and repeatedly.

This of course gets her mother jazzed up beyond all belief and then I catch holy hell for it.. lol - but I'll just have to deal with it for a few more years. Kidlet is 15 now so in 3 short years she'll be 18 and I will no longer have to worry about such things as much.

HB is home so I'm going to get her fed, might be back afterwards but no promises Might even convince her to jump on for a while but again can't promise anything, I'm sure she's exhausted. She put in almost 13 hours today at work.

"I've cooperated with law enforcement," Williams said. "I certainly
wish them the best in bringing justice to this incredibly egregious
act."

Williams' name has swirled around the courthouse because his trial
was sensational news in this small community, and it included testimony
of death threats.

William said he was contacted Saturday night by investigators --
only about three hours after Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were
found dead inside their Forney home.

He said he met the agents at a nearby restaurant, where he allowed
them to swab his hands for gunpowder residue. He also gave them his and
his wife's cellphones, which they returned the next day.

"I know I didn't do anything," he said. "I know where I was."

Williams said he was at home with his wife or up the street at his in-laws late Friday and Saturday.

He expressed shock at the crime and sympathy for the victims' families.

"I want to say my deepest condolences go out to the McLelland family and all the people at the courthouse," he said.

Asked if he is angry at prosecutors, he said, "No, I'm not. Obviously that was also a part of them doing their jobs."

Corker, up for reelection in '14 (anybody feel like some primaryin'?) and Lamar "Flannel Shirt, no Cattle" Alexander, both alleged republicans representing Tennesseeans, voted for cloture. The NRA did not score the vote, or else they wouldn't have voted how they did - they're both first-order cowards on national issues. I hope that the NRA is scoring each and every vote to follow, because that's enough to keep those pantywaists in line. I also hope that the Repubs voting for cloture did it with the full knowledge, based on whip counts, that it is purely a strategy to get red state donks to vote in favor of gun control, and not because they're DC-centric lapdogs.

/sad trombone sound. I expect the worst until proven wrong.

462 A Social Security investigator was able to read Missouri's concealed weapons permit data when it arrived on a disc in January, a fact the investigator did not reveal to Missouri State Highway Patrol superintendent Col. Ron Replogle when they spoke this week.

The new information was revealed by Social Security Administration Inspector General Patrick O'Carroll Jr. to U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer in a conversation shortly after noon yesterday, Luetkemeyer spokesman Paul Sloca said.

"Blaine was told the disc was readable, and when the person who received it understood the breadth of what they received, they had contacted their headquarters and relayed the fact that they had received all that information," Sloca said.

In testimony to the Senate Appropriations Committee this week, Replogle said he had been assured by investigator Keith Schilb and his supervisor that Schilb had never seen the data on the disc, and it had been destroyed. It contained information, confidential under state law, about 163,000 people who have concealed weapon privileges.

The changing story "is total news to me," Replogle said. "I am not going to make any comment, but I am going to be checking into it myself. I can assure you that is not what I was told, and I reported exactly what I was told."

My first reaction was "you have got to be fucking kidding me...", but then I remembered this is America 2013. The HOA has decided that roofs will leak and lawns will go un-mowed in order to pay blood money, still unowed, to the parents of St. Trayvon. Decline is a choice. That choice has been made in many locales.

482 North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has not been seen in public for the past two weeks sparking widespread speculation amid escalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula.Unconfirmed reports which suggested a coup against the leader have been rubbished by experts in Seoul citing no unusual military movement in the country.Alongside a flurry of threats from North Korea, Kim's absence has set rumour mills rolling. One question being asked is whether Pyongyang has been forced to tone down its war rhetoric against the US and South Korea.

Actually, I'm unmarried -- happily. The BH and I are happily working on our third decade together.

But I understand the "career advice from someone who doesn't know your field" syndrome. My BH has occasionally suggested "why don't you do taxes during tax season?" It does no good to point out that 25 years of experience as a controller means bupkis when they changed the tax rules last year. Even worse, being tangentially involved with taxes is a growing liability the more years there are, since you are more likely to remember how something worked under the old rules than under the new. Further, 25 years of experience means that you are old and decrepit, and unlikely to put up with the 70-hours-of-abuse-per-week that is tax season.

The problem is that an MBA both wastes your time and depletes your resources. You'd be better off as a greeter at WalMart in that THEY pay YOU a pittance, rather than having YOU pay THEM.

548 Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will leave on Sunday for a visit to Benin, Ghana and Niger, the world's fourth-largest uranium producer, the Fars news agency reported.

He will meet the presidents of the three countries and sign agreements to develop economic and political relations, Fars said without providing details.

Ahmadinejad is to arrive in Benin on Sunday afternoon on an official visit in his capacity as chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement of countries, the country's foreign minister, Nassirou Arifari Bako, told AFP.

"Education, agriculture and, above all, energy" will be on the agenda, the minister said.

The Iranian president then heads to Niger on Monday for a two-day visit, the government in Niamey said.

"He will lead a large delegation and both our nations will discuss cooperation and means of strengthening it," Iran's ambassador told reporters after a meeting with Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufou.

Mohammad Nikkhah said the visit would be a turning point in bilateral ties and would yield "excellent opportunities that will benefit both peoples".

He did not elaborate, but Niger is one of the world's top producers of uranium, which Iran has long been seeking to acquire for its controversial nuclear program.

550 Wellllll....... ITAR classes are probably not a bad idea, really. If everyone had a basic understanding, just a bare-bones idea of what constitutes technical assistance, for instance, it makes things easier.

What is bad to me is the arbitrary nature of the entire process. It boils down to who is in what kind of mood on any given day they're reading the license or your violation reports.

582 Bers!

One of my cousins runs his keyboard through the dishwasher all the
time. Obviously not a fancy gaming one or anything, but still.

587 [Chasm -- I've still got us dialed in to the Northshore Brasserie in
Knoxville at noon, April 17. I'll be wearing a Lovecraft/Cthulhu themed
t-shirt and shorts with blue shoes. Please let me know if this won't
work.

Wow, was I drunk this weekend, or what? Um, okay, I'll be there. I'll be wearing, uh, clothes. I have gray hair and a permanent Grumpy Cat expression. My t-shirt will possibly be Achewood themed.

I really, really, really need to cut down on drinking. And being drunk. And posting while drunk. All those things that Dr. Zachary Smith would have taught me, were it not for his unfortunate absence back in 1997.

588 Guy I used to know was Jonathan Winters roommate back in the early 50s. Earle Doud, who later became best known for the First Family parody album with Vaughn Meader and he created the Carnac gag for Johnny Carson. Horrifying person but he knew a lot of interesting people in his time.

eww wireless, no side buttons and a button scrollwheel
considering it's Logitech, I actually wouldn't be surprised if they email me back that they will replace it. They've never really been ones to grasp the concept of limited warranties on their products

596 The executive controlled election agency in Venezuela just announced that Chavez crony Maduro has beaten the reformer Capriles by a under 300,00 votes, roughly 7.5M to 7.3M. The percentage was roughly 50.7% to 49.1%.

This election was rigged, and the CIA should put a bullet in the head of this impostor.

600

The good things about Chavez's pet doggie winning this election:

1. Everyone in Venezuela who has any dignity and work ethic knows Chaves was a bully and a failure

2. Chavez's pet doggie won less than 51% of the vote ... it might turn out to be 50.25%. He won't govern by fear, and will get away with little or nothing ... and will take the blame for all of his failures.

... this should end Marxism in Venezuela, maybe, given enough time, even the rest of South America.
