8 My dad is one of the folks against guns because of fear. When school shootings happen, all he can think of is that his daughter (my sister, a teacher) is in danger. I understand, I really do, doesn't help that she teaches middle school in a not so great part of town. But I know the facts, and i know less guns = more crime. (great book, btw) can't convince my pop of that, though.

13 Speaking of firearms, I'm taking a concealed-carry class all day today in NC. Was reading about where you CAN'T take a gun here. It appears that any of the places where it would have been great for someone to be carrying (i.e. theater, school) are off-limits.

14 Good morning, everyone!

Does anyone have the scoop on what's going on in Algeria? Now this morning I heard from ABC radio that the Algerian Special Forces had gone in and rescued a bunch but that 2 Americans were still being held. Two days ago NPR had a story where the US Military had flown them out to somewhere in Europe.

Our press seems to be concerned with that football player and Inaugural preparations. The fact that American citizens are being held hostage seems of no concern.

And by the way, one story said that (ta-da) the terrorists wanted the Blind Sheikh released. (This goes back to the old theory of the botched fake kidnapping in Benghazi.)

So, were people rescued? If so, where are they? Are they with the other people rescued from Benghazi, who have yet to be seen or interviewed? Do we have some massive site where we keep all rescued hostages so that they cannot complain about TFG not helping them, or what?

I was talking to an instructor in Fresno over the Christmas break and he's telling his students that CA CCWs are taking about a year (unlike most places in my beloved Clownifornia, Fresno Co Sherriff Mims believes in CCW). It's everything except foods containing wheat, barley, and rye. Wheat gluten ends up in a lot of sauces and dressings (and cat food) because it's a cheap thickener.

My sister went "G-Free" after seeing something on Oprah or Oz or whatever (she's been a hypochondriac pain in the ass her whole life). So we had chicken and rice instead of chicken and noodles on Christmas Eve, and there was a box of date paste and rice flour "cookies" next to the goodies, and the Chex Mix did not include Wheat Chex. This was all reasonable to me, and she still buys regular bread for her children so she's not going to be a public pain in the ass, but I'm pretty sure the next step for the "movement" is banning wheat in schools like they banned peanuts.

72 I've been done with The History Channel for a long time, but flipping through yesterday I stopped on there to watch some documentary. Didn't catch too much but Andrew Jackson and the United States Bank caught my eye. Then they made some comment about presidents who inherit economic messes from the predecessors. I thought to myself "Oh shit, here it comes" and was then treated to GHWB as an example of inheriting a mess from Reagan. I didn't expect that particular line of bullshit.

I long for the days when my chief complaint was that they only covered Hitler/WWII. Now, in addition to Ancient Aliens (because humans just weren't fucking smart enough 3500 years ago to build basic fucking pyramids or something) I have to see Reagan Derangement Syndrome.

I don't know why that lawsuit affects restaurants to serve gluten-free food. (Like they don't already!) You don't like what a restaurant serves, go to a different one. It's unbelievable to me that you can't find SOMETHING on a menu that's not gluten-free.

The issue I do have is that the University REQUIRED all students to buy the meal plan. Remove that....no lawsuit.

Yes we are not planning to carry, but we are planning on getting the permits through the class. I have done a little research so far and it seems to be an excellent way to learn pistol fundamentals. Especially for folks with limited exposure to weapons.

If you could possibly die from eating it, why would you trust the back of the restaurant to do all that they need to do to insure that they are not serving something with a hint of gluten in it. Same with packaged food. Especially if it says that it is produced in a plant that has allergy type foods in that same plant, you can believe a slip up can and will happen.

The farm where I had permission was a small family owned operation, with really nice people. 209 Since we moved back to the country almost �20 years ago, we've had dozens of cats. Started off after the first year when two barn cats gave us seven kittens. We've had many just wander up (we live where folks in town think is far enough out to dump unwanted pets). We stopped to pick up two really tiny abandoned kittens by the side of the back road to town; they're still with us. So you're how we are.�Every pet is a big part of our family; every cat had a story. This Caturday, the most unusual story of how we got a cat.

We were �on our way back from Chicago with our twin boys. Stopped at the rest area near Pontiac. When I came out of the men's room, I saw a big yellow long-tailed tom winding around my sons' legs and the boys begging to take him home with us.

First, this is no kitten; full-grown, even already snipped. I said, no, this belongs to somebody, maybe a nearby farm. I didn't really think so, but, second but not least, we had about 700 miles to go and riding with a stange cat that far did not seem to me to be the greatest of ideas, right? Much 'discussion' in which Dad was unyielding. When I said my final absolute no, it was as if the cat understood, and he began to walk away from us. He walked toward the parking lot, and my thought was, oh great, now I get to see him run down. He walked directly to an empty angled parking space, and sat down, looking at me. It looked to me like he was sitting on something, so, curiosity aroused, I walked over to see what. Two pieces of paper, a fiver, and a ten spot.

That's why we call him Buck.

When Fate is smacking you in the face, it's a good idea to pay attention. I'm pretty dull; takes a lot of smacking, but eventually I get the hint.

We stayed that night at the old HJ at Rolla, leaving the cat, with much trepidation, in the car. (He threw up on the ride. But he throws up on every ride to the vet, still.) In the morning, we opened the car door and he bolted out. Like a scene from a Carl Barks comic, the cat goes racing up the length of the parking lot, chased by our twins, chased by me, Mrs running behind. We got to the far edge of the parking lot. The cat races up the hill and under the barbed wire, where he stops, looking back from the edge of the woods. I command the boys to stop there, and walk back to me. That was a scary moment. If the cat ran off, we were responsible for transplanting him from maybe where he was somebody's pet to true abandonment. I told the boys, either he will come back or he won't, but we had to lead him. We all began walking back to the car, and he came right up alongside of us. He was ours! (Not to sound all animal-rightish, but really, we are each other's.)

Some cats wander and sometimes don't come back. Buck is never out of sight of the house. We've nursed him through �a urinary tract infection that nearly killed him, and two bad instances of apparent brown recluse bites. He's one tough long-tailed Illinois tomcat. Loud, too, as he reminded me at 5:30 this morning; all orange cats seem to be. Buck's getting old, now, but he figured out how to get that way.�Truly brilliant, and the only cat I ever knew to help pay his way.

I got a doozy for your. Right before I graduated my school started requiring commuters to buy a meal plan. (Specificaly a $250/semester plan that came with 200 "flex points" which literally spent point for dollar in the various places around campus.)

Now consider this for a moment. I was not barred from spending money on campus before (every place took cash, even the buffet cafeterias). And I probably did spend that much on shit like coffee and lunch with my girlfriend but being forced to bascially pay $50 to eat on campus was a bit strange.
I fought the this tooth and nail and was faced with the following arguments from students: "Commuters don't pay there fair share of over head to run the resturants!" Really fucktard? How's that work, the "resturant" downstairs is a Subway (actual franchised subway), which charges more for a sandwhich than the subway 2 miles down the road but also doesn't pay rent. So how can they not make money?
From the school (and parroted by the students): "The company that caters for us plans to make it's money on unused meals each week. When a commuter joins a resident student and eats in the dining hall on the resident's meals, the catering company loses money, so commuters need to be forced to pay for this." (Student's picked this up as "commuters steal from residents."
Now consider that for a sec, the company's business model is effectively to saddle students with things they won't use and collect the difference. When students figure out how to be more efficient (and fully utilize what they're paying for.) that's theft. I wrote a student rep and told him "that's akin to saying if I bought 10 apples from the store, but realized I can eat them all and gave 5 to you, you just stole from the store, because the store's business model was bad."
They were convinced it was "Fairness" and went with it.

It's also tribalism. When I went to school, back before dinosaurs roamed the plains, there was always an "us" vs. "them" dynamic going on with the residents clearly feeling superior to the commuters because....well, for no logical reason actually.

Tami, our local shelter does a great job getting critters adopted. We just take the ones that come to us. That's always been more than enough!

Poor phrasing. If my Girlfriend has 10 meals/week, and wants to spend one of those on me to have me eat dinner with her, why shouldn't that be allowed? She still has 10 meals (and after this she'd have 8 left).
How is that any different than if she went 10 seperate times herself? Of if we both ran out and got 5 meal/week plans.

I didn't really care about the higher prices, but mandating people do anything is usually the sign of a bad business model. (And yeah, I think the school was taking a mandatory 10% but that's just a perverse incentive for them to force more people to buy things.)

I'm just surprised that if they are counting on unused meals, they don't ensure unused meals!

Fixing that might have been better than charging other people, but if they could figure that out, they'd be in private industry, wouldn't they?

It made sense to me personally. Kinda like buying in bulk, I can save money if we go in on 10lbs of potatoes together and each take 5 (assuming we can't use 10 ourselves.) No one accuses you of stealing from the store. After all you paid for it, you own it, it should be your's to dispense of how you want.
There were several kids in college who got big meal plans and helped out those who couldn't afford more than the lowest mealplan in this way. In the case of my girlfriend/now wife we worked out a deal, if we ate on campus she'd pay, off campus I picked up all the tabs. It worked out well for a while, until she didn't bother to tell me that she was running low on on campus cash. We only set this up because she said she had too much, and it didn't make much sense for me to pay and her money to go to waste. At some point she started spending more of her own money, and never bothered to tell me to buy my own damn coffee. FWIW, when she ran out of on campus cash, I just started picking up the tab for everything (lest you think I'm some sort of asshole. Like I said, every place on campus took cash or Credit card anyway.)

Free people instead start selling great-tasting gf baked goods and selling them to not gf people. Some great moments, though, like the mother of the teen with severe gi, buying one of our pizzas, saying when her son was first diagnosed, she would've paid $100 for a pizza. Think we were undercharging.

The naturopath says she's not gluten intol anymore, but we'll keep enjoying great alternatives because now, most wheat products taste like paste to me. What? I only tried it once and that was kindergarten...

279 Oh, Ripper Street starts tonight on BBC America. I've seen the first three, and it's pretty engrossing. Matthew Macfadyen (he was in Spooks/MI5, and played Darcy in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice) plays a detective battling the tide in the slum that was Whitechapel. Saucy Jack has retired, but sex murders, whoring and general degeneracy continue. A dissolute American doctor, a brutish enforcer constable and a whorehouse madam guide him in his swim through the sewer.

Moderate nudity, bizarre sex and explicit gore in the versions I saw; they may be toned down for a basic cable audience. Basically, Special Victims Unit time-traveled to Victorian days, without the political correctness.

It'll tide me over until Doctor Who returns.
