Canadian PM Harper: The Price The US Pays For Canadian Oil Is About To Go Up, Up, Up, Thanks To President Ladies' Tee

I didn't know this.

Good article about how strained the relationship is between Obama and Harper (and Obama and Mexico, too).

And also, how the media hides the story here. They don't want to report another Obama failure. So they don't. They just pretend.

But Harper says Obama's Keystone decision will cost you cash money.

The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper warned Obama the U.S. will have to pay market prices for its Canadian oil after Obama's de facto veto of the Keystone XL pipeline. Canada is preparing to sell its oil to China.

Until now, NAFTA had shielded the U.S. from having to pay global prices for Canadian oil. That's about to change.

I didn't know that. That's always a tough thing to say, because if you're writing and people are reading, you're supposed to know at least the very basics of stuff.

But I always thought the increased cost of Canadian oil would be an indirect thing -- with no ease for Canada of selling it to us, they don't give us a price break.

But it turns out that Keystone would have directly affected the cost of Canadian oil.

And Obama chose -- chose -- for the US to pay higher prices.

Via John Sexton, writing at Breitbart's BigPeace:

PM Harper: And the truth of the matter is that, when it comes to oil in particular, we do face a significant discount on the marketplace because of the fact that we're a captive supplier. We have made it clear to the people of Canada, one of our national priorities is to make sure that we have the infrastructure and the capacity to export our energy products outside of North America.

Canada was in a poor negotiating position with us on the price of their oil, as they were a captive supplier. And, it turns out, they were nice enough to be okay with this situation. They weren't looking to change it.

But Obama has announced that Canada cannot rely on us to simply take their oil at below market prices.

And now, he says (at the link) this is irrevocable.

In terms of the second part of your question, would approval of this change our mind, uh, the answer is no. Look, the very fact that a "no" could even be said underscores to our country that we must diversify our energy export markets. But as I say we have taken a significant price hit by virtue of the fact that we're a captive supplier and that just does not make sense in terms of the broader interest of the Canadian economy.

Sexton says Solyndra is no longer Obama's biggest energy blunder.

That boondoggle cost us a mere half a billion dollars. This is going to cost us a lot more, year after year after year.

Thanks to LauraW (@laurww on Twitter).

Thus Spake Biden: Our energy policy is the very best it's ever been.

No, really.

In related news, Fisker, which got government funding to build cars in Joe Biden's Delaware, might not (brace yourself) build cars in Joe Biden's Delaware at all.

Not unless it gets additional government money (or private, they allow-- but they do mention sweet, sweet government cash).

Fisker Automotive Inc. said it is delaying production of its next-generation family sedan and may not build the vehicle in Wilmington, Del.," Detroit News reports here. "CEO Tom LaSorda," ex boss of Chrysler, said "Fisker may move production outside the United States" if it doesn't raise enough additional government or private money to build here."

Thanks to @drewmtips and Kenneth.

Status Update: Real.

On the divisions to take it thing, I always sort of joke that isn't taking over Canada one of the potential Boy Scout merit badges. It's not like it would take more than one troop. Which is actually very sad since in WWII, the Canadian troops were some of the baddest of all badasses.

88 As I understand it (SCOAMF splained it to me) oil is a commodity, and producing oil ourselves (in Amerika) won't change the price we pay at the pump.

So how is it that, given an opportunity to buy oil at a discount doesn't translate into buying gas at a discount?

Why can SCOAMF threaten energy companies so as to run them out of business, but he can't introduce legislation that gives the savings in oil (that we or another NAFTA signatory sells) back to the buyers? And why can't he introduce legislation to pass that saving back to us directly at the pump? (Bypassing the fuckwads in Washington.)

It doesn't take a genius to come up with ideas like these. What are we paying him for, anyway?

This is from the Vancouver Sun link left up thread by Habitually Pessimistic:

The so-called Canadian discount on crude oil jumped above $30 a barrel this month, thanks to a lack of pipeline capacity to the West Coast and a glut of oil supply at refineries in the U.S. Midwest.

That means a barrel of Western Canada heavy oil, including production from Alberta’s oilsands, is selling this month for about $75 compared to a world price of about $107 for heavy oil. Heavy oil, laden with sulphur, requires more processing than so-called light sweet crudes, which are fetching about $125 a barrel this week on world markets.

The numbers come from Scotiabank analyst Patricia Mohr’s monthly commodities index report, issued Tuesday.

===============

I'm constantly horrified by what's been happening at the grocery store.

Remember how granola bars used to come 6 to a box? Well, now they come 5 to a box, for the same price.

Remember the big orange juice containers? Well, the price keeps going up, and the containers are now bottles, and the bottles are getting smaller and smaller.

Take a look at the potato chip bags, too. $4.50 for a bag, and the bag is half the size it was four years ago.

Grab a jar of peanut butter! Aside from the crazy price increase, turn it upside down and marvel at the huge indentation in the bottom that's making the volume smaller without being obvious about it.

But as to your larger point, yeah, I think that is a more effective way to frame it.

257 At some point, in life and in politics, the cumulative effect of bad decisions based on false premises culminates in crisis. For a good example of this, read Barbara Tuchmann's book, 'The Guns of August', which describes the events leading up to WWI. For a more recent example, follow the decision/action lines radiating outward from the White House during the Obama Administration. One thing leads to another leads to another, and at some point, all lines converge. Exact outcome is uncertain given the millions of variables in play, but there is something very bad coming our way.

If President Obama wins reelection, we're truly screwed.

I closed my business June 1, 2011. I, too, could not go any longer without a paycheck. I lost everything at age 55. I've started over and found a good job working B2B. Small businesses that I work with are in serious trouble these days and many are going to lose their businesses and have to declare bankruptcy as prices go up this summer. And we live in a state with 7.5% unemployment. It will spike over the next couple of months as the reduced tourist trade and less disposable income effect everyone. I am sick to death listening to even Shep declare the wonderful economic recovery.
No body sees it, no one is experiencing a recovery. At first people thought they, themselves, crazy or were doing something wrong because it is getting tougher and tougher to make it through a month. Now, they realize the Press and Politicians are lying and boy are they pissed.
The Neighbors next door and across the street have all of their kids back at home. Thenext door neighbor's kids are lazy and the one's across the street are definately not but they are all in a jam.I feel like the Queen ofGloom, but, really I'm not. It's just that our reality is changing andnobody talks of the same things they did just4 years ago. Now we talk about putting in gardens and how much wood to stockpile and specials on grocery. "He has made the oh-so-liberal Canadians mad at a liberal U.S. President. That takes something special."
But remember, Harper is a Conservative Canadian - and he's from the West. Those are the most pro-American Canadians in existence, and if you've lost them, then there's no hope.
I think people like Obama really don't take Canadians seriously because when we get mad we don't turn out in big, unwashed, toothless crowds and scream and dance as we burn American flags. Maybe if we did, he'd come grovelling and sniffing our butts like he does for Third World illiterates. We're quiet, but believe me, this Keystone debacle has really made a badimpression. The iron has entered our soul, and now I think a lot of Canadians don't even WANT to see it revived. I get the impression that Obama thinks that Canada is just aplain littlewallflower at the school sockhop, and we'll still be standing there waiting wistfully until the Big Man On Campus finally turns his lordly attention to us in a year or two or three. Harper sounds like he's going to move FAST on finding us other buyers, and by the time the US comes to its senses, the supply is going to be all spoken for.

Is that too hard to understand ?

We can thank Stephen Harper for Obama's loss in November.

I would give him a rainbow.

--Oh yeah, loaded with stupid. There was an inflammatory headline that pushback to the HHR Pill Mandate was an "Attack" on women. I commented, asking rhetorically but matter-of-factly, that if I refuse to comp the reporter for lunch am I "attacking" him yet still got a heavy negative rating.

We're seeing the same things here, in my home state of Indiana. All of this is anecdotal, of course, but we--my girlfriend and me--and all of our friends and all of our friends' friends--everyone we know--are experiencing the same things you describe: more struggle to make ends meet, more hardships piling on, no perceptible change for the better while the media crows about recovery and improving conditions. There is a large, easily perceived gap between what we're being told and what we're experiencing first-hand. It's at once infuriating and exasperating. Who are they kidding, anyway?

We're the animals in Orwell's 'Animal Farm': the pigs keep telling us how much better things are as things get steadily worse. Maybe, just maybe they're doing it because the Left truly believes reality is shaped by perceptions, and if they say there's no more Great Recession, then there's no more Great Recession.

Believe long enough and strong enough, and Tinkerbell lives.

268- Ally means friend or supporter, more or less.
Is there any record of King Putt having any old friends or compatriots outside of politics, beside his ass-kissers?
He was not brought up in the world we live in, and will never understand it. Who doesn't have old girlfriends or for that matter classmates that have come forward to tell a story of the old days?
He stinks to high heaven, and no one will call him on it.

280 As a Canadian, I was OK with selling our oil to our great friends and allies at a discount, we have derived a lot of benefit from our relationship and I don't mind if you derive benefit also. However, our much ridiculed Canadian sense of niceness only goes so far, if you spit in my eye I am totally willing to kick you in the balls.

Have a nice day eh.

Canada is a vast charity, eh? I don't think so. They're selling the oil cheap because they have no choice. Who else are they going to sell it to? Their other neighbor, . . . wait, they have no other neighbors. And China? How are they going to get the oil over the Rockies? No, it's much easier to ship it south to the refineries in LA or load it on supertankers. Harper is making empty threats.

283 281 - Gee, maybe they'll just end up giving it to the U.S. for free then, huh? Oh, wait, your brilliant president won't even allow that, since he's blocked construction of the pipeline that would move it into your country. How would Canadians move oil across the Rockies? That's a puzzler, alright. You'd actually have to BUILD a pipeline through those mountains, and everyone knows that utterly impossible, even though Canadians built a railway through them 140 years ago. And Harper must be quite a bluffer if he's managed to interest the Chinese in such an obviously laughable project; guess they never learned how to read maps in Beijing, eh?

"Gee, maybe they'll just end up giving it to the U.S. for free then, huh? Oh, wait, your brilliant president won't even allow that, since he's blocked construction of the pipeline that would move it into your country."
It's already flowing into this country, every day, to Midwest refineries. XL is supposed to move it down to refineries in TX and LA. There is no chance of ever building a pipeline to China. Not gonna happen. Obama can block it, but if it is blocked, it will be diverted to other locations in the US, not China.

Posted by: bjk at April 05, 2012 09:41 AM (Gq2j1)

285 You're an idiot. The kind who thinks "I don't have to do anything, the world will just go on dropping lollipops into my mouth because they have no choice. America can be a stupid as it wants, it doesn't matter because we'll always be on top. It's just fate." And I notice you didn't answer my observation about the Chinese; if this is all such a ridiculous pipedream, why are they even talking to the Canadians about it? Building a pipeline to the west might be impossible for an America that can't even erect an office building at Ground Zero in 11 years, but it's the sort of project that gets Canadians excited. We've done things people say are impossible before.

Hmm. Lots of bitter American asshole comments in this thread.
I realise that your country is caught in a whirlpool of relentless suckage, but try not to alienate one of the few friends that you have left in the world. Otherwise karma may grant you another four years of torment from Obama, and possibly eight years of Hilary after that...

289 All Americans who cannot deal with another term of Obama (you know he will win, media+minorities=elected) You are cordially welcomed to move to the booming economy of Western Canada. Our provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan are doing so well (unemployment less that 5%) we are actively looking for immigrants from ALL nations. Your American heritage will not be held against you, here in Western Canada we love Americans.
We would love to show you how to escape from socialism. It was a national struggle, liberals fight hard and dirty, but it can be done.

However, Obama voters need not apply.
