Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Trig Trutherism, AgainNo, I'm not double-posting accidentally -- I know Slublog covered this below. A couple of points I'd make: First, a lot of these guys say "leave this alone, no good can come of it" before going into a "but if it's true..." scenario, and it's usually the "if it's true..." scenario that has the most attention lavished on it. Second: Is the MFM going to cover this? They certainly squealed a lot when some right wingers (almost none in the commentariat) gave credence to the birth certificate conspiracy theory. But here is the creme de la creme of young liberal thought-leaders (well, maybe not creme de la creme, but chosen by Ezra Klein of the Washington Post as being important seriously discussing the ramifications if the wackiest conspiracy theory since 9/11 Trutherism (and maybe wackier than that) is true or not. I like Slublog's point: Maybe Andrew Sullivan continues to push this despite putative damage to his reputation among the liberal chattering class because in fact there is no damage to his reputation among the liberal chattering class about it; they're all around 50% on board with it, and repeatedly say "However, if some reporter thinks this rumor is worth investigating further, and he or she absolutely nails this story, that would be great." I submit that based on these emails, the liberal chattering class does sort of believe this, or at least isn't terribly interested in dissuading others from investigating -- after all, if someone should happen to "nail this story," then "that would be great." So is this why the MFM refuses to note that the left is taken with bizarre conspiracy theories of their own? Because to the MFM as a whole the conspiracy theory seems like it's sort of maybe true? As Bob Shieffer (aka Bot Shieffert) said, they won't publish "unless they think a story is true." Well, if they think Trig Trutherism might be true -- and it sure seems that about half of them do, but refrain from saying so publicly purely for prudential, careerist reasons -- then I guess they wouldn't be able to expose this insanity for what it is.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)Posted by: Carnac the Magnificent at July 26, 2010 01:56 PM (uFokq) 2

Even giving "eh, maybe" consideration to an Edge of Night reject plot like this is completely fucking insane. "But but...Bobby Darin! Jack Nicholson!" That's not the same story. And it's not the damn '40s. Posted by: oblig. at July 26, 2010 01:59 PM (x7Ao8) 4

Because to the MFM as a whole the conspiracy theory seems like it's sort of maybe true?
I always smelled something fishy about the lefty disbelief that her water broke and she flew home (a couple hundred mile trip, iirc - a couple hours) instead of rushing to the nearest hospital*. There's nothing strange about her booking for home so that she would deal with her own ob/gyn. To me, it's all smoke and mirror diversion from the fact that we're supposed to believe that Barack's mom was flying halfway across the planet in her eighth month. *For both of our children, my wife basically had a 'contract' with the obstetrician which included all the monthly, then weekly, then almost daily checkups, the delivery, and some followup visits. We paid a set amount for every visit, so that when the baby was born, it was all paid up. We didn't travel too far, maybe a couple hours away at most because if we had to deliver with a different ob/gyn in another city it would have cost us another small fortune. Our insurance back then had very limited coverage for pregnancy. But then my employer covered husband, wife, and children with health insurance. 1. I wonder if Sullivan's "Trig: One More Time" post on Saturday, where he kinda sorta washes his hands of the subject 'cause he's "going around in circles now", was a pre-emptive ploy to appear reasonable knowing Trig JournoList stuff would surface soon enough and thus re-open the entire discussion.
2. "Trig Trutherism" is more akin to 9/11 Trutherism than Birtherism: proponents suggesting both conspiracies are obvious to any "reasonable observer" and almost proven by "factual narratives"; if only they had access to one or two more key pieces of evidence. No one gets into this viciousness without lacking respect for human dignity expressed within a traditional family life. As often as not, this sort of rumor mongering detestably derives from within the leftist gay-activist community. Without intruding at least into the lives of children publicly educated, they just can't let either a baby or a mother alone to grow love within a traditional family setting that these days could by chance include teen pregnancy.

Okay, to be fair... the Journolist Trig stuff is from before it was revealed that Bristol was pregnant with Trixx or Snowshoe or Cosine or whatever his name is. The conspiracy theory is less nutty if it doesn't require you to explain two births in seven months.
The difference with Milky Loads is that he kept pushing it AFTER he knew that a faked pregnancy would require Bristol to give birth twice in seven months. Posted by: Masturbatin' Pete at July 26, 2010 03:05 PM (U97wT) 44
Don't know if this has been covered but the incidence of birth defects such as Down's and miscarriages goes up radically not only if a womanreaches theage of44 but also if she's had numerous other children, like say five.
With that in mind Sarah Palin's chance of having a Down's baby may have risen to1 in 20, or even 1 in 15. As for woman not being able to conceive after age 40 -- must be the explanation for my mother having a hysterectomy after having a child at age 41 Posted by: Call me Lennie at July 26, 2010 03:07 PM (r/5/5) 45

This BS with Trig being Bristols son is complete and total nonsense, always has been, always will be - the hospital where he was born in Texas confirms he is Sarah's son. The notion that the hospital staff would lie, falsify official state documents like a birth certificate are absolutely ludicrous. The rest of their case is based on half truth, conjecture and pretty much total bullshit. Funny though how the same media that is screaming about having all your facts 100% checked out prior to running the story were the same media pushing this load of bushwa (another word revived in honor of Ace) without checking squat. In fact they kept reporting that it "might" be true so much knowing full well that even if it was total crap if they just repeated it enough some idiots would believe it to be true regardless of the facts. Posted by: StuckOnStupid at July 26, 2010 03:41 PM (e8T35) 47
Has the resident ob/gyn at the Atlantic ever considered the fact that if this whole thing really were a conspiracy, then last thing Sarah would have done is flown across the country? If she were really trying to cover for Bristol, she would probably have remained in the shadows.

She cut short her speech at the conference with Rick Perry, jumped on a plane and flew from Houston to Anchorage. That is the basis of much of the lefty conspiracy, that there is no way she should have flown back home, any good mother would have just gone to a Houston hospital, way too risky, Alan Colmes was one who implied she caused the Down Syndrome by doing this. Regardless, the kid was born in Alaska. Incidentally, the legendary women's NCAA basketball coach at U Tennessee, Pat Summit, told a story where she did something similar. She was out of state, in Texas I think, and started labor. She said hell no, my kid will be born a Tennessean and hauled ass back home to have the baby there. Nobody said anything was wrong with that. Posted by: Brian72 at July 26, 2010 03:55 PM (GNBk5) 51
That is the basis of much of the lefty conspiracy, that there is no way
she should have flown back home, any good mother would have just gone to a Houston hospital, way too risky, This attitude stems from what I like to call the "Hollywoodization" of labor. You know, the woman's water breaks or she has the faintest of contractions, she's immediately rushed to the hospital, and baby pops out moments later. In real life, it doesn't happen like that. In fact, I think the only movie that is even remotely realistic in this regard is Knocked Up. Posted by: Paul Zummo at July 26, 2010 04:03 PM (MVcnm) 52
