Get In Their Faces: Administration Lashes Out at John Deere, Caterpillar For Accurately Reporting Their Finances

If John Deere and Caterpillar are to be screamed at for accurately noting their balance sheets post-ObamaCare, what is the president's preferred action? Falsifying their books?

The White House political and legislative operations were said to be livid with the announcement by several large U.S. companies that they were taking multi-million or as much as a billion dollar charges because of the new health-care law, the issue was front-and-center with key lawmakers. By last Friday, AT&T, Caterpillar, Deere & Co., and AK Steel Holding Corp. had all announced that they were taking the one-time charges on their first-quarter balance sheets. More companies were expected to make similar announcements this week.

"These are Republican CEOs who are trying to embarrass the President and Democrats in general," says a White House legislative affairs staffer. "Where do you hear about this stuff? The Wall Street Journal editorial page and conservative websites. No one else picked up on this but you guys. It's BS."

In what way is it BS?

On Friday White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and Obama senior advisor Valerie Jarrett were calling the CEOs and Washington office heads of the companies that took the financial hits and attacked them for doing so. One Washington office head said that the White House calls were accusatory and "downright rude."

Obama's also hopping mad that insurance companies have the audacity to note he sloppily drafted his Multi-Trillion-Dollar Abortion and that kids with pre-existing conditions are not, in fact, required to be insured.

Insurers agree that if they provide insurance for a child, they must cover pre-existing conditions. But, they say, the law does not require them to write insurance for the child and it does not guarantee the “availability of coverage” for all until 2014.

William G. Schiffbauer, a lawyer whose clients include employers and insurance companies, said: “The fine print differs from the larger political message. If a company sells insurance, it will have to cover pre-existing conditions for children covered by the policy. But it does not have to sell to somebody with a pre-existing condition. And the insurer could increase premiums to cover the additional cost.”

Congressional Democrats were furious when they learned that some insurers disagreed with their interpretation of the law.

A year ago, Obama threatened to call out executives who kicked up a fuss over his policies. But he had a hell of a lot more political juice, then. I don't think CEOs are particularly frightened now at being called out by an unpopular president.

5 As far as cooking the books, well of course Teh Bamster wants the CEO's to do just that. We are talking about a man who made the CBO keep number crunching until they came up with the numbers he wanted. It's the Chicago way. So if corporate CEO's bring a knife to the fight, Barry's going to bring a gun. If they send one of his to the hospital, he's going to send one of theirs to the morgue...

"Most of these people [in the Administration] have never had a real job in their lives. They don't understand a thing about business, and that includes the President," says a senior lobbyist for one of the companies that announced the charge. "My CEO sat with the President over lunch with two other CEOs, and each of them tried to explain to the President what this bill would do to our companies and the economy in general. First the President didn't understand what they were talking about. Then he basically told my boss he was lying. This article is chucked full of good stuff:
-----

Neither Waxman or Stupak -- who betrayed the pro-life
community by negotiating for more than a week with the White
House to ensure his vote on the health care bill --
had anything more than a cursory understanding of how the
many sections of the bill would impact business or even
individual citizens before they voted on the bill,
says House Energy Democrat staff. "We had memos on these issues,
but none of our people, we think, looked at them," says a
staffer. "When they saw the stories last week about the charges
some of the companies were taking, they were genuinely surprised
and assumed that the companies were just doing this to embarrass
them. They really believed this bill would immediately
lower costs. They just didn't understand what they were voting
on."
----
Ending with this:
"People may not have liked some of the Bush
Administration's style, but at least President Bush came to
meetings and was gracious," says a current State Department
staffer. " I won't say that the Europeans are missing Bush, but
they feel that President Obama just doesn't care about the
'special relationship' that has existed between American and
Europe. He's made it worse, not better."

55 A year ago, Obama threatened to call out executives who kicked up a fuss over his policies. But he had a hell of a lot more political juice, then. I don't think CEOs are particularly frightened now at being called out by an unpopular president.
Particularly since they are required, by law, to file this paperwork with the SEC or face sanctions. I really hope these CEOs get subpeonaed--it would be delicious seeing Democrats getting pissed because their companies obeyed the regulations that Dems so love and cherish.
If John Deere and Caterpillar are to be screamed at for accurately noting their balance sheets post-ObamaCare, what is the president's preferred action? Falsifying their books?
If you read Waxman's letter, that's pretty much what he's insinuating the companies should do--pull Enron-style accounting tricks so as not to inconvenience the Democrats' policy agenda.
Waxman and the Dems are running straight into the reality that the math doesn't give a crap how compassionate and progressive they are. As Denninger at Market Ticker says, Math is, and a company's balance sheet is completely disconnected from the government's balance sheet, even with the BS assumptions the Dems fed to the CBO to get the result they wanted.

he is officially an unpopular President, at his worst he's been polarizing, but after the Ocare cramdown his numbers are underwater in Gallup, the best poll for a dem, the one that had him winning by 14% on election day, he's now at numbers that are the average for someone who wouldn't see re-election, let them tell you about Reagan and Clinton all they want, when you start polling in the low 40s, you're in trouble, Reagan was facing a public impatiently waiting to see how his ideas would work after frustration with Washington for a little over a decade, Clinton did a total 180 in political policies to save himself using center right philosophy and a hated speaker in Gingrich (who Nancy is even more unpopular then in his worst days of polling) and Obama is facing a country that only gave him 53% of the vote in a year Republicans didn't want to turnout and a year so bad for republicans people were talking Reagan landslide for the dems, Obama will have to either pull a 180 or hope for a foreign policy issue he can hold on to (that's how Wilson and FDR got re-elected amid bad numbers)

Clearly Obama signed the laws in the wrong order. He first should have signed the "Corporation Requirements to Lie to Make Obama Look Better Act of 2010".

Then sign the Health-Care bill; then if anyone spoke up he could punish them for telling the truth. As it is, the punishment for filing knowingly false SEC documentation is much more severe than rude phone calls from the White House.

74 This whole socialist scheme could be crushed if, as has been mentioned, these companies would stop paying for the privilege of being eaten last; the sooner they realize that even with a sweetheart deals, hip-deep in government subsidies and a near-monopoly, they will sooner or later be on the block--They always, always, always run out of other people's money.

But, it takes a man with balls to stand up and say, "I'd rather go out of business than fund socialism--even if I am getting rich under the current scam."

Stockholders should partially force the issue by pressuring the company to fire any workers whose health care cost to the company for 2011 exceeds what the company would have paid in 2009--or anyone under 30. Au contraire. Liberal Democrats (BIRM) know this will force employees off the employer-based insurance plans. This is step one of the Two-Step. Step two? Government absolutely must absorb these people because the corporate profiteers have failed and government is too big to fail. Single-payer here we come.

This is not speculation. Multiple sources and activists in and out of government have explicitly stated this.

93 So all these corporations are supposed to lie to their shareholders on how the organization is spending their money? Which would run foul of the SEC causing them to take on heavy fines equal or larger than the amount that they're taking to comply with the law? Wow, that strategy is brilliant if you think about it. Take down the EVIL corporations later if they hadn't talked about it now! But since it's out in the open, that only delays their strategy of nationalizing every fucking thing that moves.

130 The goal has always been single-payer (I hate that term; it's a bland way of saying socialized medicine).

First step is to adopt the Cloward-Piven strategy, and apply it to insurance companies instead of government. Flood the system, and make it impossible for the insurance companies to survive. Take the "insurance" out of the insurance companies - prevent them from making rational economic decisions by forcing them to cover pre-existing conditions. Then watch insurance companies either raise premiums to a level that will outrage the public or watch them disappear.

Second step, have the goverment step in to save the day. Socialized medicine.

Everything we are seeing now is simply a way to fuck up private insurance so badly that the only alternative is a government-run system.

159 Actually, I think these CEO's should respond, "Will next Tuesday work for you?" and show up.

Then, at the meeting, just make up complete bullshit lingo, a "Usual Suspects" but a grade-school stupid level---profit-to-earning ratios, reverse derivative financing, back-cast multi-matrix capability projections, etc. Just throw out all these terms that sound business, sound serious, throw in just enough reality that the dems can key in on some really common words so they'll try to act like they know what is going on and, unable to resist the urge to pretend like they are smart, they'll repeat the bs.

Get it on camera the committee chairman taking about how he understands that Caterpillar's back-cast multi-matrix capability projections determined that reverse derivative financing would be an insignificant increase in their profit-to-earnings ratio but he can't figure out why that means their health care costs will increase.

This allowed the gun industry to---gasp---follow the law and still remain in business, trying to be profitable, despite the best efforts of the left.

183 Wouldn't it be nice to see a mass exodus from the Liberal, I mean Democrat Party. It needs tohappen when, in most states, party affiliation is required to vote a Republican or Democrat ballot. Followed by Democrat politicians, who finally finding a moral compass, drop there affiliation with their party.
What the hell am I thinking. That will never happen. A Democrat poitician with a moral compass? This is a broad brush but I believe the vast majority of democrat voters can be lumped into 3 groups. Those that are:
1) Too stupid or lazy to think about the consequences of there vote.
2) Dellusional leftists that believe in everybody should be equal and rich. Like that shit can ever happen.
3) Theiving lying bastards out to get theirs through the ballot.

219 152 Actually, I'm one of those "smartass independent voters" you've got the hard on to "get rid of".
I never blamed W for Katrina, as he was not at fault (I know where the blame should have been placed however). I despised Clinton from the get go (I will admit to cheering for Obama during the first half of the Dem primaries, because I hated Hillary and thought Obama such an idiot nobody would vote him into office -- so in that sense, I do apologize, but I never voted for him, ever). I didn't vote McCain into your primary; I'm an independent, so I don't vote presidential primaries, as I'm not a member of a political group. I do hold the right to vote Dem in local elections, because quite honestly the GOP has put up some of the worst canidates ever for the locals -- sorry, I really cannot vote for corrupt, stupid people, some of whom have family members who get away with breaking the law...same goes for the Dems here, but at least one feels free to pick and choose -- if I was to affiliate myself with a party I'd feel bound to vote a straight ticket...
I think you're grasping at people to demonize yourself. The only thing that lost this election for Republicans/conservatives was the societal shift that has taken place in the past 60 years -- which most Repubs/conservatives did jack shit to head off...and a certain amount of arrogance of their own during the primaries (in short, you suffered from the same blinker vision I did personally: you took one look at Obama and thought "there's no way any sane American would vote for this guy"...and you underestimated just how much the media would whore themselves out). Hey, it happened...time to take care of the situation...but don't go pointing your fingers at anybody before you also point them at yourself.

um, that doesn't dispute the numbers, independents did mostly hate republicans after katrina and loved clinton, they voted big for Obama, using the "i'm in the minority" argument doesn't take away from those facts, these are facts using polling and voter numbers, so before you do a condescending post claiming we don't want to point fingers at ourselves (the ones who gave Dubya those polling numbers in the 20s-30s) i'd face the fact that your part of a group that overall has gone for candidates just because they look better and speak nice despite their records

236 With Biden, he'll screw up and then admit, "Yeah, ya got me. What do I know? We all know I'm not that smart and love the sound of my own voice. Now let's all take the corks off our sporks and eat pudding." Then he'll waffle on some issues without doing anything malicious.

Obama, however, will dig in Rahmbo's heels for understanding the depth of his contempt of the voter and ignorance of worldly things and go after you with all the spite he can buy off with tax-payer monies. And he'll do it with media and surrogate ideologue complicity.

Biden is relatively harmless to the State. Not benign by any means, but not implicitly damaging. Obama is in his own league.

Oh Gawd. New meme from MSM; 'Christian' militia equals Tim McVeigh:

(1) Authorities said the arrests underscored the dangers of homegrown right-wing extremism of the sort seen in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people.

(2) David Cid, executive director of the Oklahoma City-based Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism, said there has been a resurgence in the past year or two of "domestic militancy" similar to what was seen before the Oklahoma City bombing.

source

I guess the press is hoping that by engaging in this 'heavy lifting' for Obama they'll lift his approval ratings the same way that Bill Clinton was lifted post OKC. Sure the 'Christian' group are bastids if they wanted to cut down any police officer, but ask Randy Weaver for comment first.

Sure there are no scantily clad, bikini wearing women, but I'm sure they weren't in the picture because they were busy getting the boys some ham sammiches and drinks.

He writes regarding Frank Rich's insight into oppostion to Obamacare:
It turns out, according to his well-crafted analysis, that it’s not the bill that’s got people in an uproar; rather, what we’re facing is the death rattle of a dwindling cadre of white, racist, sexist, homophobic males terrified by the ascent of people of color, women and gays.
The ever-tolerant Rich reasons: “The conjunction of a black President and a female speaker of the House — topped off by a wise Latina on the Supreme Court and a powerful gay congressional committee chairman — would sow fears of disenfranchisement among a dwindling and threatened minority in the country no matter what policies were in play.”Mr. Rich is shocked by the level of anger in the land, and he fears for the safety of our elected officials, much as I’m sure he did during the George W. Bush administration. He calls on Republican leaders to distance themselves from the more radical voices among them, echoing the demands I’m sure he made of the Democrats during the last campaign.

405 It looks like we now see the way to defeat the Alinsky method: give the Community Organizer power, and preferably over the community that wanted him. Let him spend their money, sign them up for loans and require certain behavior from their businesses.
It's painful, but the experience of most diseases is painful.
Perhaps we will be lucky and build up some immunity as a result.
Clearly, BO is not qualified for the job of President. We knew he had no work experience, we've watched over the last few months as his oratorical skills have disintegrated and we only recently found out that most of the UofC professors found him to be incapable.
Now we find that even his advisors are incompetent whackjobs.
How could none of them have known that Caterpillar, John Deere and the rest would not have to publicly take the massive financial hits they are now disclosing?
As I said in Summer 2008, I hope everyone here votes. Even better would be to get others to vote. Perhaps a campaign to recall the Democratic Congressmen that voted for OCare is now in order. It's starting to look like a case of "Your congressman or your Job (life)".

Perhaps not on TV, but they have succesfully used the Internet, publications, newspapers, talks before policy orgs. Good thing about FB is I receive an update every time they made a public appearace, write an editorial, send a link on Twitter, etc. They just really need to appear on TV more that they have, though it's hard when the other party controls the media.

412 I don't know when the tipping point will come. The tipping point when Americans rise up and say "No more" to this naked grab for government control over our lives. Perhaps it will come when the producers in this country have nothing more to lose. I don't think we've reached that point yet but it is approaching if present trends continue. And I think the left badly miscalculates how far you can push the American people. The American national character is not the French character. There is a streak of independance here that doesn't exist in Europe. And it is an inherited streak. You don't have to be born here. I emigrated here as a young child along with my parents, fleeing the Iron Curtain. And I say without a hint of condescension or arrogancethat my parents were more American than most Americans. They knew what freedom was and didn't take it for granted. And they imbued that spirit in me and I've passed it on to my children. Americans will put up with a lot but we will not become serfs. Bill Fucking Ayers got that part wrong in his calculations.

Exactly. Have had this argument at work many times. Try to explain that because I oppose Barry and his policies doesn't make me a racist. Blank stares. I say that for example any black person that opposed George W. Bush must also be a racist using their formula. Uproar!! Apples vs. oranges - Bush was 1. Evil incarnate 2. White - so therefore he cannot be oppressed or be victim of racism or practically anything. The irrational hatred of republican/conservatives has totally robbed them of any abilty to think this through. very tiresome.

And this crew in power now needs to be exposed -- but first the people who need to be called out are the people who helped make them possible. How do you cut down a tree? You chop down its base. There has been too much focus on the top leadership and not enough on the Ayers and Alinsky's and the idiot kiddies who fall for that crap. Put a lot of pressure/heat on them, and watch the whole thing tumble. That's my theory.

Financed by a country that is broke.

If only a conservative had been in power any time since Reagan. What a lovely dream.... Indeed, if only Reagan had EVER had a friendly legislature to back him up and keep the budget under control. It would be a different world if the Dems hadn't been actively betraying the US every damn day for decades and decades.

539 One more thing from one of the source articles for this post....

"Most of these people [in the Administration] have never
had a real job in their lives. They don't understand a thing
about business, and that includes the President," says a senior
lobbyist for one of the companies that announced the charge. "My
CEO sat with the President over lunch with two other CEOs, and
each of them tried to explain to the President what this bill
would do to our companies and the economy in general. First the
President didn't understand what they were talking about. Then he
basically told my boss he was lying. Frankly my boss was
embarrassed for him; he clearly had not been briefed and didn't
know what was in the bill."

You have a citation for Reagan's poll numbers? Polls, in retrospect mean nothing: Unlike 0bama, Reagan truly led in a bipartisan way, since he had to work with a Democrat Senate most of his two terms, and a Democrat House for all 8 years in office. Polls at present, however, mean a lot because Reagan did not extend his middle finger to the will of the people in pursuing his programs.

Clinton's appearance of success was brought about by 2 things. He failed to do much to change economic policy, and he enjoyed the full fruits of the peace dividend. He was otherwise worthless and yet another traitor to the US. Only his failures saved us from him and his harpy wife.
All current problems are the fault of the Dems. Clinton had 3 opportunities to kill Bin Laden, and refused. He bears the blame for the result. The Dems bred the underclass in America by paying the scum of the nation to breed like rats. The Dems keep the racial tension heightened, to keep minorities voting for them. If not for Democrat harping, almost everyone would have moved on by now and the only racist holdouts would be elderly or trapped in Appalacian hollers'. The Cold War was the fault of the Dems, who failed to address communism when they had the chance- instead of fighting itwith all our might they held back. The Dems jacked up the budget under Reagan, blowing our wealth on yet more misguided social spending. The Demsfucked the housing market by stimulating artifical demand -coercing banks (who were all too cooperative)to loan money to those who had no means to repay. The Dems are the ones bringing asmany Somalis and other sundry muslim vermin into the country as fast as possible. The Dems allow absurd monetary rewards inthe lawsuit lottery, and prevent any meaningful tort reform. I could go on and on. D = criminal.
Every modern problem is the fault of the Dems. Every. Single. One.

Under Reagan, the last republican to enact any significant part of our economic policy, every income bracket got richer. It's the only time that ever happened, even including the much hyped Clinton years. You want wages at the bottom to go up? So does everyone else. Confiscation doesn't work. It's been tried. The government confiscates, then wastes. The only thing that works is to make the pie bigger, and to maximize the value of labor. The only ways to make the pie biggerare to shrink the government's share, and to encourage investement. Cutting spending and lowering taxes (even for the "evil" rich) returns money to the economy. And if you want to make labor more valuable, you need to quit artifically increasing the supply. In other words, quite inporting surplus labor from Mexico and the rest of the 3rd world mess to our south.
The economic policy of the Dems is 100% opposed to economic success. But then, that's the point. How else to usher in a communist dictatorship?

Posted by: Rackit at March 29, 2010 09:19 PM (WnytZ)
Again, Clinton did nothing to bring about the surplus. He left the overall economy alone, so that business, despite being over taxed, was at least able to plan and invest. Unlike the current mess, where everyone is spending each day wondering what new act of confiscatory lunacy will become law. Also, he benefitted from the peace dividend as he gutted the military. Clinton did nothing to bring the surplus. And even then, by the end of his 2nd term we were already headed back toward deficits.
On the otherhand, the Demlegislature, who actuallycreates the budget, ignored Reagan'sbudget plan and created the budget deficit. Had Reagan's budget been implemented instead, the deficits wouldhave beengone by 1986.

As for the Clinton boom, it had just about evaporated when Bush was elected --- does anyone remember how the libs said Bush was trying to "talk down" the economy?
And, of course, the obvious question is: if Clinton made the boom happen, why couldn't he sustain it?

Repeat until it gets through your obviously thick head: Presidents do not grant prosperity -- they can encourage it or they can get in the way of it by their actions/words that set the tone of legislative policy (which is not wise for a president to become extremely partisan with, as shall be seen here shortly), but they do not grant prosperity.

I'll be the first to say that the war on drugs is a bad idea, as the recent successof decriminalization inPortugal has shown us. Even Reagan, great as he was, was by no means perfect. I haven't seen the Dems raise a damn finger to bring that war to an end, though. Not a single proposal.
And the police and militaryare bad because? The military forces foreigners to behave, which we need. They tend to be annoying if not properly cowed. Do you think our multitudinous enemies (the list grows longer dailywith the current prez pissing everyone off andmaking us look weak) would just sit back and play nice if we unilaterally disarmed? And even the socialist utopias in Europe need police. Even (gasp!) the Soviet Union and Cuba, which we all know were just lovely places where the bad, bad rich were punished for the good of the poor. Some people like to commit crimes. Thus police are needed. They don't do a very good job of forcing people to behave, though. All they really do is try to round up people who already broke the law.

Damn Straight. I've had 15 tickets (3 DUI) and 6 accidents in the last two years and my auto insurance company was raping me with their premiums. Then I killed a cow when I swerved off the road the last time I drove drunk. Now I can't get any auto insurance. It's a f-ing joke that these insurance companies can charge me more and deny me coverage merely because I stick my head up my ass when I turn the ignition. Madame Chairperson needs to do for auto insurance what she's done for health insurance. Namely outlaw it. We need auto insurance reform now!

Conservatives tend to believe there are some rules of conduct related to sex. Conservatives also believe that the law should represent the majority point of view, except where it intrudes on the rights listed in the Bill of Rights. So as a practical matter, there is really not too much on the plate that would get removed if conservatives ran the whole government.

"Liberals" (and I use the term loosely) tend to believe that, no matter what the "masses" think, regulation is required for what cars we drive, the fuel we use, how we dispose of HOUSEHOLD garbage, the percentage of minorities we should hire, what we say about minorities, how big our houses should be, whether we should even have cars, how many kids we should have, whether we should eat meat, whether we should spend our own money on things we enjoy, whether we leave th e lights on, and I could go on for quite a while.

And yet, you say, that WE are the tyrants?!

Democrats want insurance companies to comply with the laws they didn't write when it comes to covering pre-existing conditions for children.

On the other hand, Democrats want other companies to ignore the laws they did write when it comes to reporting financial threats to the companies well-being.

And even though Democrats on Waxman's Kangaroo Kommittee will yell and scream at these company executives for pushing their retirees into the government system, the whole purpose of ObamaCare is to push everyone into the government system.

Have I missed anything?

700 I left for a little while and found unknown Jane responded to my reply to her criticism of me calling out independents for helping get Obama elected so here's my quick reply:

I think I'd rather go with the fact that the Republicans have been
riding on Reagun's coattails for the past generation and have done
nothing to defend conservative political thought, the Constitution, or
themselves for that entire time.

did I say Republicans were perfect? hell no, they lost the 1992 election by letting their President become a big spender and just the same in 2006 2008, but your group that you so gladly defend, independents, cheered the opposing side to everything you are so mad at the republicans for by overwhelmingly supporting a candidate that supported the very policies your deemening
And I suppose I should be made to take on the blame of every freaking
person who doesn't register with either political party -- in fact, I
should be judged by what I choose to call myself instead of what I do.
Isn't that what you're saying?

aren't we getting prissy? I made some statements about simple statistical facts about the behavior of independents the last 20 years, i'm sorry it offends you that you seem to be in the minority

Yes, I am being condescending to you -- because you are making
sweeping generalizations and wanting to lay blame over something that is
now history (and believe me, if I could go back and change it I would)
rather than focusing on the present. The independents lost the last
election for the Republicans...how do you get them back? (hint: pissing
off the ones who are kinda on your side and making quips about "getting
rid of them" isn't the way to go about that sport).
I got news for you, we won the 2000-2004 elections by running a screw moderation campaign and having great Republican turnout, we don't need independents as bad as dems do though they are a nice vote to have, Republicans take back independents by being the opposing party, because that's the party independents tend to vote for, I stand by what I said, independents are squishy pussies that can't make decisions, just vote for whoever makes them feel better as they vote for big spenders, they are just as guilty as Obots and RINOs for what's happened

710 704 Ahhh, God.
I've got some news for you: no party gets into office without the vote of the independents. Now, that can turn out badly -- see elections: Clinton, Obama -- or it can turn out well -- the defeat of Coakley (although I'm not in love with Brown, he probably is a damn sight better). You don't think you need them? Well, good luck with those elections in November. I will vote my conscious, but I can't guarantee anybody else -- go in with that attitude and you'll lose for sure.
Most independents vote their interests, true -- but then it behooves the parties to find out what those interests are: like most people, most independents work and pay taxes. They would like to keep their rights as citizens.I hardly find those to be interests that are too hard to cater to. Yes, they have their qualms with big corporations and Wall Street, but then, most working class people do -- but the Dems have taken a sane distrust of the same and turned it into a propaganda point (and most people are not immune to propaganda); did the Republicans do anything to counter that?
The Republicans essentially sat on their asses and did nothing in the face of a full court press by the statists (read here: Democrats) to control (and distort) the meme. And guess which way the independents went? This hasn't only been in regards to elections -- the conservatives/Republicans have essentially let the statists take over key areas of society; most people don't look much further than what's on tv, on the radio, what is said on the college quad (sad, believe me, but true). The Repubs let the opposition have free rein there, and did little to nothing.
Truly, the only reason I even vote for Republicans is because I'm pretty sure I know what the Democrats are. As an American I do not like it. But the damn Republicans have done more to shoot themselves in the foot than any party I've ever seen (and yes, while I don't think W was a bad guy, the way he let himself get rolled by Nanzi was enough to make me pound my head against a wall). At some point one has to think that it isn't worth it to defend an entity that refuses to defend itself however...and now you call me the pussy?

717 Unknown Jane @ 296 "why I claim "independent" -- besides the whole philosophical desire to
not be affliated to any group."

Too generic, and leads to way too much misunderstanding.
I tell 'em "Discordian." That usually backs 'em off.

718 721 Perhaps I should go with that -- it's very hard when there are a limited number of pigeonholes allowed, and none of them really fit.

719 Tank @ 420 "The irrational hatred of republican/conservatives has totally robbed
them of any abilty to think this through. very tiresome. "

I'm wondering if you don't have the cause and effect mixed up there.

This is part one of his great barn-burning speech at the RNC in 2004. He flung John Effing Kerroid on the floor and danced upon him with hobnailed boots, then kicked his carcass out the door.

We need forced health insurance in case we're in the hospital and crash our bed into someone else's bed and put them in the hospital.
It's only responsible to be insured to protect other people in a case like that.
