The problem with the Prius is that for the amount of car you get you just won't make up the price difference in gas savings for a similarly classed car unless you own in it for like 7-8 years. Considering I've never owned a car longer then 3 years a Prius is a lousy investment.

Posted by: BTMintheSTL at July 12, 2009 10:14 PM (kGDTD) That's not entirely correct. My sister saves about $3,000 a year in gas (she drives 90 miles a day at $3.00 a gallon) compared to her old Ford Explorer. Considering that you can get a pretty clapped out Prius for about $25,000, it's about the same as most cars in that class. Most decent new cars seem to be starting at about that price, so I don't see any real front end price hit. Their drives are still usually assholes, but there is some real economic sense there. I would own one if I didn't think I would continually be answering questions about my own sexual orientation. Jim, you could be right, I'm no expert on cars, but the analysis I saw about 3-4 years ago figured out the "premium" you pay for driving an eco-friendly car and basically figured that you would have to own the car for several years before you recouped your investment. Certainly compared to an Explorer or something you'd save a bunch, but (correct me if I'm wrong) isn't the Prius in about the same class as the Civic or Corolla? Seems you can get a pretty decked out Civic for about $17,000, so you need to make up like 8 grand to make it worth it it seems.

Charlie Wilson was a patriot and a good American, there was a time when we had Democrats in this country that were exactly just that, instead of the current crop of Marxists that have hijacked the government. Well, o.k. Joe Lieberman may be close, but to be fair he's an independant. With that said this movie makes it appear as though Chuck Wilson single handedly defeated the Russians in Afghanistan all by himself with his super secret black ops program without so much as the first bit of knowledge and help from the Reagan administration. Posted by: BTMintheSTL at July 12, 2009 10:34 PM (kGDTD) A few years ago, with cheaper gas prices, and a 9-month long waiting list for the early Prius' (so everyone paid full list plus) that was probably the case at that time. They are roomy enough inside and it will easily hold 4 adults and a good sized nephew, so I'd say they are bigger than a civic, but then again I have not been in a civic in ages, so that might be dated too. One thing that most Prius owners are completely dense on is that their electrical system (including batteries) through it entire life-cycle does as much environmental damage as driving the baddest 454 Corvette from the 1970's. It really is almost all image with the Prius crowd. Posted by: Jim in San Diego at July 12, 2009 10:42 PM (H7Rlw) 71

VW TDI Diesels (with standard tranny) will kick Prius ass up/down/sideways. It "was an attempt to carry out a 2001 presidential authorization to capture or kill al Qaeda operatives, according to former intelligence officials familiar with the matter," according to a report published Sunday on the website of the Wall Street Journal. VW TDI Diesels (with standard tranny) will kick Prius ass
up/down/sideways. My old 98' Jetta gets over 50mph if you're not hammering it, 40 if you are, and it will take me from Palm Beach FL into South Carolina before you need to fill it (~650 mile range on a tank of diesel). Palm Beach to Albany NY is two fillups along the way and arriving with around half a tank left when I get there. A lot of people go for the hybrids because they're trendy and 'economical', but the real engineers calculate the lifetime TCO and decide to get diesels. Don't believe the stated numbers, they lie. They're LOW by ~10 mpg under actual driving conditions. The 50+ I've stated is odometer measured and what I put in at the pump. VW's, for whatever reason almost always test lower than what you're going to get in reality if the car is sanely driven. My other car, a Passat turbo-4 claimed around 27 on the sheet, but its not hard at all to routinely get 36 out of it, over 44mpg is possible if going only 45mph. Also, say this girl is really ugly, we say, poor thing is not really attractive, bless her heart. This is a nice way of saying, Dayum, that bitch is a dog! We have manners, doncha know?

Yep, Scott, that is an old pic from about 4 yrs ago of me. It is the only one I could find on my daughter's facebook. My camera battery is dead or my camera is screwed, so I need to take some new ones. I hate that pic, actually. I am definately Southern. I have a thick accent and was born in ATL and raised on the river in Alabama. Thanks for the comment on the daughter, yes, she is very pretty. She doesn't have to try. Might have been why her hubby was hot to marry her at 17??? I sent her to a private girls school up in the NGa mountains to keep her away from boys. 35 thou a yr. Yeah, didn't work. Those are her kids, of course, and she is 21. *sigh* Posted by: di butler at July 12, 2009 11:57 PM (tjdui) 219
#16...
I saw that too and actually laughed loudest at the comment. #18... I read a couple of years ago that Toyota is so certain about the Prius that they keep (or kept) only one spare battery in the entirety of the U.S. Unfortunately, it is essentially a throwaway car due to the fact that replacing the set of batteries in 8 or so years is reported to be ridiculously cost prohibitive. Meanwhile, my 6 cyl. Jeep Grand Cherokee actually getsat about 22 mpg Hwy even when doing the standard 85 mph on I95 from Jax to Daytona Beach. That's better than the 4 cyl Mitsubishi Galant I had driven for the past few years. I'll still be driving the Jeep in several years whereas I'm guessing the average Pious or 'Smart Car' owner will have died in a 15 mph fender-bender. Give me heavy metal anyday. "Smart" cars are environmental disasters.
Their battteries end up as toxic waste in four years, and need to be replaced with batts that will do the same in another four. If your sister drives 90 miles per day, it is likely that much of the drive is on the freeway. This is the worst place for hybrids because their efficiency is gained by converting momentum into stored electricity during stops. No stops, no efficiency.
It is not unusual to be quoted 40 mph city and 43 mph freeway for a hybrid. Diesels on the other hand, get their efficiency from higher compression, a better burn and more energy content per gallon. In Europe, where fuel costs 2 or 3 times more than here, diesels are 50% of the market, from low end to high end. Europeans know and are laughing at our hybrids. A diesel must be built stronger to withstand the higher compression. A benefit is that they normally last twice as long. Posted by: Robert at July 13, 2009 12:05 AM (cd6Ip) 230

The rest of the country should take lessons in Southern manners. God
knows the West Coast is sorely lacking in anything in regards to etiquette. A couple weeks ago I was teaching a summer college course for gifted high school kids at Texas AM and one of my fellow instructors, a Yankee, noted with amazement how much more polite southern kids were compared to those she taught up north (holding doors, lots of "ma'ams" and "sirs", etc.). When I explained to her it's because these kids were from the Bible Belt, her amazement suddenly turned into pity for these poor kids for living in such a religious environment. Sigh! Maybe someday she'll make the connection. Posted by: Aaron at July 13, 2009 12:31 AM (gftD1) 255
Fellow Morons.. Last June 8th, as many of you will recall..we lost our Beloved 'Blue', the family cat, due a kidney ailment. Since he loved to hang on the edge of the koi pond, we had decided to expand the water feature in the yard in his memory. Today we finished the project. Blues ashes were lovingly placed under the liner so he could 'watch' them in perpetuity. We built the new pond downstream from the existing pond above the rocks. It will eventually become a nursery for small fry. Some good news concerning another kitty! The other day my wife saw a mouse scurrying downstairs in the house and it looks like she's on board in adopting a new 'mouser'. I swear I did not go out and buy said mouse. Priuses, which are popping up like mushrooms in my liberal yuppie part of town are for people who don't like cars and see them as appliances. The Prius is about as interesting as a refrigerator. It's less interesting than my refrigerator. My fridge has bacon in it. Your average Prius has 145 pounds of homo in it. Posted by: UncleFacts at July 13, 2009 12:45 AM (vZVv7) 276

The attitude of kids out here is appalling. And maybe it's also a class thing out here, too. The magnet kids (middle class to upper middle class) in hs were generally well behaved towards the teacher and any subs. The regular school kids (lower middle class to poor)...Holy God. I've never seen so much disrespect. I have friends who taught in inner city schools and they have plenty of horror stories. What's sad is that the parents enable it. Even if the kid is mouthing off in front of the parent, the parent is completely oblivious or just doesn't care. People say I should teach since I have a history degree. I won't be doing that unless I'm allowed to beat the kids into obedience. Posted by: wherestherum at July 13, 2009 12:46 AM (gofDd) 277
SIM, very pretty resting spot, for anyone! Good work. I love ponds and water features, I put a small one in here at this house, but the leaves and muck kept getting in and it was too much work. As I was saying above, I am looking forward to moving back to the river in Al. I miss having water and stinky fish around. I think you should stop by the pet store and pick up a couple of squeakers and make sure you have a cat coming the next day. Wife will be thrilled you are so efficient! Remember, you are not replacing your old kitty, you are honoring his memory by getting another.

Couer d'Alene is beautiful! What a great place to get married ProudinNC. When I lived in Spokane in the '80s, we used to go camping in the mountains at every possible opportunity. I don't remember any microbreweries, may have to just go back for a visit and check 'em out.

Rum, been there, and all the horror stories are true. It sounds crazy, but a lot of the parents wanted their kid to give white teachers a hard time. They also wanted them to act out to get the special ed. money.
Youcan't believe some of the stuff that goes on in an inner city school. We had a student raped in class because the teacher quit that day, walked out. Posted by: gator at July 13, 2009 12:51 AM (yUiO3) 281
Gator, the weird thing was, I grew up around a whole bunch of pervy men, not just strangers, either. I have a 3rd cousin and an uncle and a friend of my dad's from the army and etc.,etc. that were very wrong. I actually think learning how to manuever around and deal with them made me tougher. I had to use my wits, not tits to get out of some very uncomfortable and scary spots. I taught my daughter very young to be tough. And I may have went a wee too far. She scares the holy hell out of me. And I am not afraid of much after living with the ex, the wife abuser. She doesn't look tough, does she? Everyone has said all her life how sweet she looks. Ha.

gator,
One of my good friends, who is very optimistic about the world (bless her heart), signed up for Teach for America after she graduated from her Ivy league school. She was assigned an inner city middle school to teach math and science. She told me about a kid who mouthed off to her even tho she wasn't addressing him. He mouthed off right in front of his mother. His mother said, and I kid you not, "I don't think you're a good teacher because you don't love my son." This kid is swearing at my friend in front of his own damn mother and his mother is criticizing her for not being nice to the little bastard. Unbelievable. 281 TheresaD, that was way back in 1992, but I don't think the place has changed too much. Very quiet little town, we had friends who lived in Hayden Lake that told us Couer d'Alene is like the mini Vegas of the NW for weddings. Showed up at 945am on a Sat, couthouse opened at 10. There were at least 15 couples in front of us, and as they went through the clerk's questions you could hear they were from all over - Oregon, Cali, Montana. I bet there were 100 couples there that day.
Outside, vendors set up their booths to get your ceremony done at their chapel, pictures by them, etc. We already had a reservation at The Hitching Post, diagonal across the street from the courthouse. It was awesome, little ivy covered chapel, sweet little minister and his wife. $95 and an hour after it started, it was done and we were sipping a brew and having a sandwich in town. WTR, I have no idea how you deal with those bratty kids! I used to work in the elementary school library and substitute teach in Al. I think if I had to deal with anyone older than 5th grade with a mouth like that I would have already been arrested. Parents reap what they sow. We will have some wonderful people to deal with in the coming yrs when all these brats grow up, won't we? Yikes!!!!!!

Oh, it's not me. I'd be sued for child abuse, haha. I feel bad for the teachers who are genuinely trying to make a difference, but they're not going to make a lot of headway. I don't know what it is about certain ethnic groups in this city, but it's amazing they can walk with the size of the chips they carry on their shoulders. I forgot to add, my friend who was doing Teach for America, she quit after one school year. It's a 2 year contract, she'd deferred law school to do it, and she couldn't do it longer than the one year. Posted by: wherestherum at July 13, 2009 01:01 AM (gofDd) 287

di, good for you for preparing your daughter for a tough world. Hard part is not losing your ability to trust or your compassion. I fully believe bad things happening to you can be a great thing, a wonderful lesson to learn. I tell people I'm a product of my environment, not a victim of it, and I grew up super rough. Can't let it make you hard or bitter, as it will ruin your life and keep you away from some great things.
rum, I had all kinds of things said to me. One mother said it was ok if her son told me to 'kiss his ass' if I disrespected him. You know, asked him to stop dancing or talking during class. my bro drove here for my birthday in a rental. they didnt have what he wanted, so they gave him a prius hybrid. he said he got about 60 mpg on the highway, and he only goes under 80 if there is a traffic jam. so they do get great gas mileage. If you dont need the volume an suv or truck has, and you do a fair bit of driving, then i think it makes sense as that maximizes what you need it for - getting from a to b on less gas. two people and a child could use it for a week long trip, assuming just luggage. only thing that peeved me with it was the spedometer/odometer console. my brother also had occasional issues with getting it to start, as it would just be the electric motor, and it sometimes wouldn't be on when he went to reverse out of a parking space. considering how much i travel, and my intense dislike of going through airport security now, i'd consider getting one if this guy i know wasnt selling his mint-condition infiniti for well below book. im a little hesitant on purchasing new tech like this b/c we really dont know their reliability and long term costs (e.g. how long those damn batteries will really last, how improved new ones will be, and how much they will cost, come that time), but toyota does make quality stuff. Have a couple friends that had 90/91 camrys and they drove them to over 200k without any repair work. only stopped b/c they totalled their cars in major wrecks.

People used to say I was wrapped in cotton batting to keep me from getting hurt. However, the very things I needed to be protested from, were the ones that slipped by them. It is a strange dichotomy, I suppose. Anyway, after the hellish stuff my kids lived thru and have seen, they are extremely normal. I have no idea how. I hope I did some things right.

I remember I was watching the French Revolution on The History Channel, when they got to part of beheading Louis the 16th, I started crying, not because I was sad for him, but the lucky asshole wouldn't have any "give me death" over this mind splitting headache. I had to go to the ER for that headache. I could not keep water down, it was that bad. I hate migraines.

Ha! So SiM, I guessed right on the engineer part? Cool. My hubby has an engineering degree, he worked for Phillip Morris and Chung King back in the early 70's, but started his own business brokering steel and selling components to building suppliers. I got involved because I was selling metal roofing rollforming equipment after my divorce and my hubby knew my boss. So, now I sell steel. Mostly from China, some from Mexico, or whever I can get the best price for what I need. Unfortunately, our business has been pretty bad since all this recession started, and looks to get worse. I did just hook up with a guy doing HUD jobs, so perhaps we can suck up some of Mr. Obama's stimulus money?? Sure hope so.

Kids are resilient, aren't they? The tough ones can handle more than we give them credit for. Some things will happen to them, and parents can't always be there to protect them. Teach them the way they should go and hopefully, they won't depart from that. It's got to be a fine line to walk in making sure your kids aren't naive and easily victimized but not so paranoid about the bad men coming to take them away.
Ginger, glad you are up and running again. Posted by: gator at July 13, 2009 01:23 AM (yUiO3) 304
di,
It's interesting how kids of strict, over protective parents turn out. I have 2 friends I've known since I was 5 who both had strict, overprotective Chinese parents. Both were straight A students from K-12. Both went to Ivy league schools. (I count Stanford as Ivy league.) One of them, once she got to college, really cut loose. She didn't get into drugs, but there was lots of partying. Lots of booze and boys. At one point she built up a tolerance to Bacardi 151. I kid you not. (And she still manage to be a stellar student, despite the partying.) The other did nothing of the sort. She was studious, had good, non partier friends and maintained her straight As. My parents, otoh, were fairly chill. I never had a curfew or anything. I could stay out till whenever after I turned 18. I never got into drugs, drinking or sleeping around. Even in college I was boring. Maybe it's because I knew if I got into really deep shit my parents wouldn't bail me out. Posted by: wherestherum at July 13, 2009 01:23 AM (gofDd) 305

di,
i think it is about balance. my ex was hypersheltered her entire youth and then allowed to run amok at age 13, when her mom left her dad and took her with her. that is when she lost her virginity. her bf at 14/15 was in a gang selling drugs and being recruited to do hits. her mom would let her stay with him for days at a time so that she could go try to shack up with christian music singers. my ex has/had tremendous potential but she refuses to go after it. me, i was given some boundaries, but allowed to develop and learn. as a result, i was far better adjusted and could better plan, develop, and pursue my life. Not having the luxury of being bailed out does indeedmake one more careful. thats cool ginger. dada was her first real word, from what i recall. as i was functionally becoming more and more a single parent, she never said mama until a few months later - about the time she started saying "dink" (for drink), "peas" for please, "taynse" for thanks, and numyum for food or anything that was yummy. that was a few months later.

SiM-The comment about it being Mr. Obama's money should have come with a sarc tag, I suppose. Ha. Trust me, with the taxes we pay, I damn well know whose money it is. Well, was. But yeah, you bet your sweet bippy I am going to try to get all I can of it to make up for the hundreds of thousands that b'tard has cost me so far.
I dunno about what is right with kids. I really don't. I was as wild as a march hair, no hard drugs or anything, but partied and got in trouble as a teen, mostly to get attention and purposely rub my parents nose in it. Not very smart or mature. I married my ex at 20, I think as a big rebellion. Unfortunately, that one blew up like dynamite in my face and I can honestly say I paid for that mistake in spades. Unfortunately, so did my kids. My daughter had a brief wild streak, but mostly her problem was boys, boys, boys. In a weird way it is a relief she is married so young. She is a fantastic mom, very happy. I just worry she will regret it. My son is a sweetie. His biggest rebellion has been a little weed smoking and that's it. He is very nice and polite to me and his stepdad, always has been. He dates, but I can't see him wanting to get married for a long time! Posted by: di butler at July 13, 2009 01:36 AM (tjdui) 312
Growing up, I was given some boundaries too, but never got caught. Raising the kids wasn't a picnic all of the time but we sure steered them away from bad influences. Private schools when we lived in NYC and a very rural setting when we moved up here. The kids turned out great. ![]() Posted by: sickinmass at July 13, 2009 01:37 AM (/i4dU) 313
I had strict parents growing up but I was never really rebellious. The most rebellious thing I ever did was get my ears pierced twice.
They were also overprotective, so-much-so that, when I went to university, I was absolutely shocked. Had a lot of tough experiences, e.g. taking care of pregnant friends problems with an abusive guy; but I learned a lot. If it weren't for those experiences, I don't think I would have lasted 6 mos. in the real world. Posted by: '80sBaby at July 13, 2009 01:45 AM (sZ+lP) 314
Gator, you did have it rough. Thankfully, you knew how to make chicken salad out of chicken s#it. Most people can't, or don't.
A.G. it sounds like your wife was lost for a while. I think divorce is very hard on kids, no matter how close they are to their parents. My kids hated their dad in many ways, but loved him because he was their dad. They haven't had a relationship with him since they were 12 and 14, but I think they will always be torn about how to deal with the whole thing. Posted by: di butler at July 13, 2009 01:46 AM (tjdui) 315
Should mention that small, private Christian universities are rough. This often surprises people, but it's b/c most of those kids have had legalistic parents become intoxicated by the sudden freedom. I've seen the sweetest kids turn bad just b/c they wanted to know what the real world was really like, they couldn't stop.

di, yep, it will always be a source of pain for your kids that they do not have a good father. No way around that....not having a dad sucks.

319 Problem is, depending upon the institution, the kids at the Christian schools try to hide it. For instance, when the pastor's daughter has her dad watching over her shoulder at home, church, school, she is going to act out more when he is not around but still feel the pressure to be a little angel. Saw it happen to several friends.
I went to Christian schools from 4th grade up through my BA, the kids at the more legalistic schools were far more rebellious than my more gracious HS alma mater. The most legalistic school ended up with the kids with the most outrageous behavior, most of them are your typical druggie/drunk/unmarried with 2 kids types. You're right, though--it happens everywhere; there is just more of an effort to hide it at the Christian schools. Posted by: '80sBaby at July 13, 2009 02:01 AM (sZ+lP) 325

It's an odd dichotomy in this city. On the one hand you have yuppies who wear the business suits and work downtown or on the Westside. Generally these guys are white, Jewish and Asian. Then on the other hand, you have the blacks and Hispanics who mostly dress like gangstas. I guess there are women who find it attractive, but I despise the gangsta look. And I really hate when white guys try to emulate it. It makes them look not only stupid, but ridiculous. I do love when the gangtas who wear their pants below their ass get pantsed by the cops when they run. I also like when their pants fall and trip them up when they try and run from the cops. Ah, the 1969 Dodge Charger. This was the last of the truly good years for the muscle car and Mopar was king. There was nothing like watching one of these Chargers with the hemi option doing a burnout in front of the local burger emporium. But times, they were a-changin’. Insurance and the EPA shut down the muscle car.
On a lighter note I got this morning and turned on the news while eating breakfast. Fox had some blather going of no important so I went over to Squawk Box to see what the commie take on the financials was. They were discussing the plans on how to pay for the new Healthcare scam. This is the kind of thing that really burns my ass. It is not just CNBC, ALL of the news shows on this issue are the same. They are not discussing the healthcare scam as in “should we do it at all”. They are discussing how congress intends to pay for it. This really lets you know how thoroughly the commies own the media, including Fox. Posted by: Vic at July 13, 2009 07:09 AM (5ynkO) 399

www.fuelmileage.gov:
Honda Civic hybrid Toyota Prius freeway MPG = 45 Volkswagen Jetta = 41 The Jetta has 170 horsepower while the Prius has 76. The VW does not require expensive battery replacement and will last much longer. The Jetta starts at $ 17 K, the Prius $ 22 K. Even if you keep the car for ten years to take full advantage of the hybrid, the VW is likely to be a much better deal. Meanwhile, the driving experience is not even close. PA is right: If VW imported the smaller size diesel, it would outperform the hybrids in almost every department. In Europe, where fuel costs are very high and fuel economy is even more important, diesels outsell hybrids by a wide margin. Posted by: Robert at July 13, 2009 07:49 AM (cd6Ip) 404

Speaking of the glory years for the muscle car, I read an article in Hot Rod magazine a while back about the cries of BS when discussing rated HP vs actual and the differences in the way they measure HP now vs then. A lot of the younger folks claim that today’s high performance cars are higher HP than the old muscle cars. The aim of the magazine article was to put to bed some of those discussions.
The went out to the junk yards and other locations and obtained some of those old muscle care engines. (Some of these engines are very hard to find) They rebuilt the engines to exact factory specifications for the year in which they were originally sold and then tested the engine in the same manner as they do now for rated HP. No surprises there. The old ‘69 426 hemi was rated at 425 HP in 1969 but testedPHPHP out in the article at over 900. What surprised me was the old Chevy 427. If I remember correctly it only put out a measly 600 or so. All the old Mopar engines put out far more HP than what they were rated at. Posted by: Vic at July 13, 2009 08:05 AM (5ynkO) 409

He said one of the Black Panther members was allegedly carrying a local Democratic committee card.In a letter to Conyers, Wolf wrote that Justice’s inaction ‘merits congressional attention, if only to force the department to explain its decision to dismiss this case.”Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), the ranking Republican on Judiciary, also said the dismissal raises questions about politicization at Justice. That Super Secret Dick Cheney Anti-Terrorism Program? It was to kill or capture top al Qaeda leaders: WASHINGTON -- A secret Central Intelligence Agency initiative terminated by Director Leon Panetta was an attempt to carry out a 2001 presidential authorization to capture or kill al Qaeda operatives, according to former intelligence officials familiar with the matter. The precise nature of the highly classified effort isn't clear, and the CIA won't comment on its substance. According to current and former government officials, the agency spent money on planning and possibly some training. It was acting on a 2001 presidential legal pronouncement, known as a finding, which authorized the CIA to pursue such efforts. The initiative hadn't become fully operational at the time Mr. Panetta ended it. ~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm sure the Dems and the media will be quick to inform the public of the details. In the Sixties, a 5- or 6-passengersedan or coupe with a smallish (under 300 CI)V8 was supposed to get a little over 20 on the road. This was considered adequate and responsible. Overdrive transmissions would have improved this, but there was no demand at all, even though the units were available aftermarket, and worked OK.
Station wagons were much heavier because they had a reinforced, cross-braced frame, notthebigger body. Many family-man drivers opted for the perceived greater safety factor, and gave up about 5 MPG. We had the same big-car/little-car safety arguments we have today, except the little cars were Beetles, TR-3's and Spridgets. Pony cars, Mustang/Camaro/Barracuda, were looked down on by real muscle-car owners (GTO, 442) because of their lack of frame. I have found this to be a valid criticism. A 6-cylinder Studebaker with factory overdrive would get over 30, and they couldn't give them away. Corvairs and VW's were in the high-20's, though if you were what was then called a "Ralph Nader driver" you could do much better. There were microcars: 1950's King Midgets and Isettas got the same kind of super-mileage we admire now. Mini-cars were cuter: Nash Metroplitan, English Ford Anglia, and real Minis (a lot mini-er). I drive a factory-supercharged 1963 Studebaker ("4.5 liters") with a tall gear ratio. If you keep your foot out of it, you just touch 21 MPG highway, and it weighs less than a new Mustang despite its station-wagon frame (and built-in roll bar!). Push the loud pedal and there's 335 HP, but mileage goes to 16. Similar HPfrom bigger engines usually called for multiple carbs, and that often meant 10 MPG in something like a Riviera. Rivieras were very quick. Nobody thought 10 MPG was sustainable on a large scale. Most people did not have them. Posted by: comatus at July 13, 2009 08:58 AM (XTm8J) 415

Late to the thread AGAIN--dammit.
I spent 40 years pursuing a well loved career, fixing cars. Seen the advent of radials, electronic ignition, fuel injection, and finally computer controlled autos. Of necessity, I remained more than conversant with every system, not wishing to give up my career. Today's cars have devolved into efficient transportation modules, with all the personality of a dead tree stump. We have a good module, a Toyota Camry, that returns a steady 36mpg--fine car, well built, reliable, etc. and I HATE the stupid thing. Fun is driving a lovingly restored 68 Road Runner-with a transplanted , tweaked 440. Fuck the gas mileage, it makes driving enjoyable again. Fun is also a 22 year old SUV, for no other reason than that I can have one. Posted by: irongrampa at July 13, 2009 11:06 AM (ud5dN) 419
irongrampa... I couldn't remember which moron had the 68 Road Runner (Man what a great looking machine that is!). Glad you posted!

You stand accused of gumming up a perfect numerical progression such has never been seen on the interwebs before. How do you plead?
This is, contrary to popular opinion, NOT 4chan, so no numerical "combos" please. Posted by: cheshirecat at July 13, 2009 10:41 PM (8n/8e) 421
