An Inconvenient Coldening: Record-Breaking 12-Month Global Temperature Plunge Wipes Out Nearly All of "Dangerous, Permanent" Rise in Temperatures over the Last Century

A11530B.jpg

Drive the SUV a couple of extra times around the block, kids.

And start killing and burning hobos by the truck load, to release all that sweet, sweet CO2 "sequestered" in their stinking tramp-bodies.

CO2 is no longer "The Invisible Killer."

Heretofore CO2 will be known as "The Sun's Little Helper."

Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile -- the list goes on and on.

No more than anecdotal evidence, to be sure. But now, that evidence has been supplanted by hard scientific fact. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously.

...The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to wipe out nearly all the warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year's time. For all four sources, it's the single fastest temperature change ever recorded, either up or down.

Scientists quoted in a past DailyTech article link the cooling to reduced solar activity which they claim is a much larger driver of climate change than man-made greenhouse gases. The dramatic cooling seen in just 12 months time seems to bear that out. While the data doesn't itself disprove that carbon dioxide is acting to warm the planet, it does demonstrate clearly that more powerful factors are now cooling it.

The article goes on to note that cold is more damaging, both to animals and human prosperity and happiness (as if that last one matters, huh?), than warmth.

Well, fuckin' duh, huh?

Stupid goddamned motherfuckers. I can't wait to hear the spin.

And to hear, inevitably, that the models were "slightly off" and it turns out excesss CO2 cause Ice Ages, not hothouses. Different models, different theories... but the conclusion is always the same: Human industry and even existence itself is a scourge that must be eliminated before we all melt to death/freeze to death/suffer in dangerously-lukewarm seasonal
"sweater weather" to death.

Or at least approximately the size of Rhode Island.

1 yep. The response will eventually be about climate change to cooling rather than warming which we're still causing and so we have to take these steps which are identical and just happen to coincide with a socialist/leftist fantasy of worldwide takeover.

Everybody remembers Eisenhower’s warning about the, “military-industrial complex,” shoot, it has become the siren call of some.

Few if any recall — and it is never repeated — the second of the two specific warning he made in that very same speech:

“The
prospect of domination of the nation’s scholars by Federal employment,
project allocations, and the power of money is ever present — and is
gravely to be regarded.
Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.” (emphasis added)

The scientific-technological elite, Eisenhower truly was prescient. Read the speech, it could have been written today.

51 The MSM has thus far given us two (2) global warming scares and two (2) impending ice age predictions as far as I know. All four are IMHO the result of children playing with statistical tools that should be resevered for adults. You call it weather, I call it noise, and looking too closely for trends in the noise is always a recipie for making an ass of yourself.

Posted by: John Galt at February 27, 2008 10:33 PM (F5RrO)

52 Our planet already is in an Ice Age, we are just in an interglacial warm period. These icy times really go back only to about 3 million years ago. This present situation is very unusual for the Earth. Usually the Earth is much warmer. Warmer than the Medieval Warm Period. We may be in an Ice Age death spiral where, in some year, we pass some unknown critical value and the Earth does not warm up, the glaciers do not retreat, they keep going until there is nowhere else to go.

Far fetched? It has happened before.

In a few centuries we may have to install huge mirrors in space to increase the heat flux to the Earth.

73 I think the "great awakening" should have started many months ago when the CO2 curve could not be made to follow the "model". CO2 levels were increasing AFTER the warming period in question, not before or at the same time. A few climatologists -- very few -- who weren't smoking dead hobos realized in a moment of clairity -- "Hey, this global warming shit is a crock!"

But perhaps something more concrete: the models have been predicting this or that catastrophe, especially increases in hurricane number and intensity, which never turned up. But that didn't stop them ... they were right back at it the next year ... and the next year ... you have to admire the persistence even if the science is a crock. Reminds one of Linus and the Great Pumpkin. This year, our models are really, really sincere and now you'll all be very sorry you didn't revert to living like it was 1200 AD.

I was especially amused at the Congressmen flying to Greenland to get a "sense" of global warming. Greenland did not get its name because some stupid Viking couldn't spell "snow". It was green once, ice-covered before that -- kind of runs in cycles like the ice age cycle that has been going on now for millions of years (and won't end, according to one climatologist who may also be full of bullshit, until North America runs into Europe).

This act of science piracy must not go unpunished. Every idiot with a PhD (or less) that threw in with this sham science must surrender their degree forthwith -- on penalty of being forced to watch "The View".

But, of course, this was never about "science" and only the gullible and stupid fell for it.
This was an exercise in backdoor socialism and if this doesn't work they'll try something else.

It's been done. Some hippy-dippy idiot nephew of my hubby's boss was arguing with him about AGW some time ago. Recently hubby pointed out that the entire premise was crumbling, and the dude said he'd look into it and get back to him. So he does a little googling around to his favorite granola-molesting websites and comes back with "global warming CAUSES global cooling."

Which is bad. Global cooling is bad, and it's our fault.

I don't give a shit, as long as mankind adapts with advanced technology, and the polar bears are exterminated before the pack ice reaches Long Island Sound.

Posted by: lauraw at February 28, 2008 08:36 AM (DbybK)

78 Laura,
It would be interestting if someone did a Lexis Nexis searchand countedevery anecdotal news story about global warming that appearedin 2007, such as drowning polar bears or starving plovers. Since we now know that 2007 wasn't warm, all those stories would be bullshit, establishing a figure for how much hot air is behind global warming alarmism.

79 I thought that the watermelons had a winning strategy with theGreat Industrial WasteCauses Declining Spermcount Crisis™. It wasvaguely plausible, with a generally aging population and associateddeclining sperm counts, its hard to prove or disprove and is amenible to statistical manipulation, positively demandsgovernment controls, and hits a guy right in the nuts.
What more could a crypto-commie big stater want?

81 Great comment at the linked story, by hokkoda:

500
years ago in their effort to prove the Earth was at the center of the
universe, the Church sponsored numerous Rube Goldberg style machines.
The only way to prove their Earth-centric beliefs was to build machines
that showed the crazy movement of planets as seen from the Earth. Turns
out, it was really just a bunch of things moving in circles around THE
SUN. Elegant, simple, easy peasey.

The people who proposed an alternative to dogma? "Revolutionaries", and they were locked up or excommunicated or both.

Flash
forward 500 years. Massively complex computer models try to predict
what is an elegantly simple natural machine, applying all sorts of
rules and machinations to prove man-made climate change. Turns out it's
just that pesky sun again. And the people who reject the dogma --
"deniers" -- a link to Nazi Holocaust "deniers", an explicit reference.
They're banned from conferences, decried as lunatics or fringe or
puppets of Big Oil.

85 Problem is the politicians are all on the bandwagon now. The Athenians allowed themselves one politician to banish each year to some foreign borehole. We need a similar practice, or perhaps a prominent meathook, to engenderhonesty and integrity on the part of our public servants.

Just let him out in the woods every now and then and he will gather his own materials.

90 Well, they've been planning for this for some time. Haven't you noticed that it's not "global warming" any more? Now it's "climate change". Any change in the climate is man-made, and thus we must never leave our caves.

95 Hmmm. "Dailytech" huh? The article you cite from, you stupid goddamned motherfucker, itself refers to sources reporting the very opposite of what is claimed.

From the NASA website: “The year 2007 tied for second warmest in the period of instrumental data, behind the record warmth of 2005, in the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) analysis. 2007 tied 1998, which had leapt a remarkable 0.2°C above the prior record with the help of the "El Niño of the century". The unusual warmth in 2007 is noteworthy because it occurs at a time when solar irradiance is at a minimum and the equatorial Pacific Ocean is in the cool phase of its natural El Niño-La Niña cycle.”

Posted by: ergastularius at February 28, 2008 07:19 PM (fuBmI)

96 Ergie, ergie, ergie. You read, but you do not understand. Hadley center's best estimate anomaly for January 2007 was indeed high: +0.632 C from the norm. What you did not understand is that January 2008 showed their best estimate anomaly to be: +0.037 from the norm. That means the Earth temperature for the month of January 2008 was a whopping 0.037 degrees above the "perfect" norm temperature. Another way to look at it is Hadley's numbers show January 2008 was 0.595 degrees C cooler than January 2007.
Hadley's monthly data.
How to read monthly data.
