A Little Advice For Katty Carroll...

If no one else can find your sources, maybe it's because they're not really sources.

No one could else could find Steven Glass' "sources" either.

Checking the Web and Lexis-Nexis for the people and organizations mentioned in Glass' articles, you do not come up empty-handed. Although there are often no references before Glass published his fantasies, there are often references afterward. These are generally in British publications--or publications in places to which Britain brought the benefits of advanced civilization, such as hack journalism.

Between the Web, Nexis, and the good old telephone, it took little effort to discredit such apparent Glass inventions as the National Memorabilia Convention, Monicondoms, or the investment firm RBL. Other untraceable organizations, publications, and individuals include Patriotic Profits, P.J. Hozell, Isaac Tyo, Climate Lookout, Truth in Science, the Association for the Advancement of Sound Water Policy, Jim Sackman, Back to Eden, Naked Truth, Ryan Hogin, Andrew Zubitsky, the "Newt-O-Meter," the First Church of George Herbert Walker Christ, the Committee for the Former President's Integrity, Steve Tellis, the Tellis Times, and the Commission to Restore the Presidency to Greatness.

Listed here, it all seems transparently bogus or at least deeply suspicious. Yet I'm embarrassed to confess that every Glass story passed my stink test when first published in the New Republic. Now, plowing through the big Nexis dump, my hindsight is golden. Glass moved monumental piles of bullshit past me, a vain skeptic.

...

[One] explanation is that Glass built up credibility as each story was published and went unchallenged. You figured that if RBL didn't have a bond dealer with a urinal on his desk, someone from RBL would call the writer's bluff. What you didn't figure is that Glass would make up RBL itself. The principals in his stories didn't complain about the falsehoods for the simple reason that they often didn't exist.

[T]he main reason Glass spoofed everybody's radar is that his stories were, in the self-mocking journalists' phrase "too good to check." As a reader, not his editor, it was not my job to check them. But I didn't even bring my usual editor's skepticism to reading them, because I wanted them to be true.

AP is in trouble. Blood is in the water. Forbes eagerly destroyed TNR -- and that was just TNR, a small magazine very nearly just a vanity imprint.

Does AP really think that no other MSM organization is going to dig here?

Are you mad at me, Katty?

Katty, are you mad at me?

Please talk to me, Katty. Please don't destroy me.

Are you mad at me, Katty?

1 "Does AP really think that no other MSM organization is going to dig here?"

Um, yeah, that's exactly what they think.

3 All anyone needs to know the answer to that question is to look back on how the other networks went after CBS after Rathergate. I was working for NBC at the time, and the strafing was pointed. I'd look for Reuters (for the sake of good PR) to be the pointmen on it... they wouldn't mind supplanting AP in the US as the supreme purveyor of information.

4 tmi3rd,
I agree that Reuters will go after AP over this. But I am doubtful other News outlets will do the same. AP is a competitor to reuters, but a supplier to everyone else.

5 The AP is a willing martyr, similar to Saddam.

Posted by: Capt. Jamil Hussein at January 02, 2007 02:56 PM (UFNnW)

8 Just got off the phone with Jamil, and he says that he exists, but he's not so sure about the AP anymore, since the corpses of all of the reporters he's met with over the last few years were found together on a Baghdad street blindfolded and badly burned - well, not fully burned, and the blindfolds were made out of flame-resistant material, yeah, that's the ticket, flame-resistant material, and they had holes drilled through their kneecaps, too, which Jamil could make out because the burning wasn't complete, just their torsos mostly and like their hair, around the flame-resistant blindfolds, but it was still bad burning, really bad.

9 Shut up, Jamil!

Posted by: Lucy Ramirez at January 02, 2007 02:57 PM (UFNnW)

10 That wasn't the real Jamil. Trust me, I know. If you ever meet him, ask him to pull up his shirt. Don't worry, he's used to it. The real Jamil has two pupiks. Also, you can say any phrase you want to him and he will turn it into an anagram, just like Dick Cavett. He's slightly colorblind, plasma TVs give him a headache, and he's gonzo for Parker Posey.

Posted by: Police Commissioner Akim Hussein at January 02, 2007 03:05 PM (muz9j)

11 Don't listen to these sons of Jahili dogs! Jamil Hussein will speak as soon as he finishes walking his beat! The disbelievers will have their guts roasted!

12 Flopping Aces catches another one:

So what do we have here? We have a new AP story out today in which they use anonymous "police" sources to dispute Centcom's version of a firefight. That same story is written by a man who has helped write stories in the past with Qais al-Bashir of Jamil Hussein fame, plus he has used a known fraud for his work in the past also.

32 stories from this guy. The plot thickens...

Posted by: JavaMan at January 02, 2007 03:35 PM (f14vX)

13 You know, I was abducted by Police Captain Jamil Hussein. I woke up in the middle of the night surrounded by a bright light, and I was paralyzed, but a voice in my head said, "Do not be afraid. All will be well." Then he anal-probed me and showed me some burned corpses in a mosque, or maybe four mosques.

14 On a side note, a coupla three years ago a movie was made about Stephen Glass's Bogus Journalism Journey called, appropriately enough, Broken Glass. It's actually a reasonably good movie and I recommend it. It details his rise and fall in a reasonably accurate, and entertaining, manner.

15 Burning corpses are hot.

16 I'm every bit as real as any of the other Capt. Jamil Husseins.

Sincerely,

17 You can make fun of my name, but lay off the Captain.

Posted by: "Barracks" Hussein Osama at January 02, 2007 04:12 PM (UFNnW)

18 Jamil Hussein's favorite pickup line? "Say, baby, you got a little Captain in you? You want some?"

19 Still waiting for the MSM or some intrepid investigative reporter (Bobbie Woodward, call your service) to look into who produced the forged Rathergate documents.

What happened to Glass, anyway? Flipping burgers at Mickie D's?

Posted by: Ed Snate at January 02, 2007 05:54 PM (bMDVq)

20 Yow. I just noticed the Slate story ace links to is eight years old. Still interesting, though.

My only question: was any TNR editor ever fired over Glass's serial plagiarism, or was only Glass given the heave-ho? I suppose I could go look it up, but that would mean exerting actual effort, and I'm averse to that.

My point is, there had to be any numbers of editors at TNR who read Glass's stuff and said, "yup, looks good to me." Seems to me those guys should have been canned, too.

So I'm just curious whether anyone at TNR actually lost their jobs because of what happened or did they just throw Glass under the bus?

Posted by: OregonMuse at January 02, 2007 05:58 PM (CkYzD)

21 What happened to Glass, anyway? Flipping burgers at Mickie D's?

Last I heard, he got his law degree and works for some firm on the East Coast. Seriously.

Stop snickering.

22 No, I am Jamil Hussein!

Posted by: Spartacus at January 02, 2007 06:14 PM (uHh8R)

23 At this point I think the AP has crossed the point of no return, but it won't destroy them. They will end up with a CBS-logo sized black eye, though and hopefully news organizations will stop just taking anything they print and throwing it out without even bothering to check it first.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at January 02, 2007 06:21 PM (FuM7z)

24 Tushar, of course I had to step out after making that remark, but I wouldn't be too quick to say that the MSM outlets will protect the AP. If this gets the momentum it truly deserves, this is going to hurt the AP's diminished credibility so much that it may require another news source for the networks.

How do I know? Because people are already trying to bury it up high, and at the local affiliate level, I can tell you that my editorial staff are fucking pissed. The last thing in the world the MSM (behind closed doors, of course) feels it needs is another Rathergate witch hunt, and that's exactly what they're staring at right now.

Which, of course, tells me that it's just about time for me to start making sure I have full-time singing gigs or go back to med school.

25 tmi,

If you'd like to plant some bugs and get some real juicy stuff I have some reliable designs on hand, and maybe one or two actual devices if I look around a bit through some piles of electronic junk.

The tattered legacy of hanging around with an "old school" NYPD wire man for too many years ;->

Some are quite unobtrusive and would require a professional bug sweep to detect. One looks just like those "add a plug" thing you slap into duplex receptacle to get more space to plug junk into. Broadcasts on a frequency in the weather band and has a range of about 150' Just plug it in and walk away ;->
