History The Last Slave Ship Survivor Gave an Interview in the 1930s. It Just Surfaced I found this bit to be interesting: Hurston’s use of vernacular dialogue in both her novels and her anthropological interviews was often controversial, as some black American thinkers at the time argued that this played to black caricatures in the minds of white people. Hurston disagreed, and refused to change Lewis’ dialect—which was one of the reasons a publisher turned her manuscript down back in the 1930s. That's....not usually celebrated. History is the study of people, and being able to “hear” those people with a realistic “voice” makes understanding them easier. Liberals have kittens over Huck Finn's use of the N word WRT Jim, but that realistic portrayal of the period vernacular makes the character's moral story arc more remarkable. Now, of course Huck Finn is fiction, but the same holds true with historical accounts. Feminist Insanity Georgia bill would require men to report every release of sperm to officers This is somehow supposed to be the same as restrictions on abortion or something, don't ask me. They seem to miss the slight distinction that Pussy-Hat Pammy is, you know, killing someone while Onan over there is just messing up the sidewalk. In any event, I can imagine if this thing passed: "911, what's your emergency?" "Just reporting that I nutted officer" "Ew" "I'm going again, should I call back or do you want to hold the line?" The Religion of Humanity Christianity and Humanity—from a Distance Mahoney draws on..(various philosophers - Ed)..to elucidate the ways in which Catholic laymen, intellectuals, and authorities—very much including Pope Francis—are allowing a desiccated humanitarianism to take the place of the Christian gospel itself. They are, as Machen complained about liberal Protestants a century ago, dutifully taking their orders from sages and experts who have only contempt for Christianity and so relinquishing the very thing they mean to preserve: their own relevance.Almost every time I see non-Christians trying to use gospel as either a “gotcha!” to Christians or as a justification for one of their idiot ideas (Jesus was a socialist, man!), the number one thing that they miss is that the teachings of Jesus were intended for individuals. “Render unto Caesar” was a rejection of worldly concerns as applicable to his teachings at all (and a neat sidestep of a transparent trap). Thanks for the ONT.
I always loved history. One of my favorite professors in college (a tiny little woman) said that first person accounts are actually often the most biased of anything you read (because all of the person's biases are unfiltered.) However, they are extraordinarily informative because of what the source says and does not say, how they say it, when they said it, etc. Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at March 22, 2019 10:08 PM (brgv3) 12

The article is interesting, but the author has their own biases.
He was upset that the government would not provide any 'reparations' for stealing him from his own land? That is the author's word choice, I doubt it is this guy's. Also, why would the government, that just spent blood and treasure doing something that freed you and people like you, be further monetarily responsible for your illegal enslavement (the slave trade being illegal at that point?) I was out there then. This was a move by the AG to make big news and try for GUV. If they hadn't been H'wood stars and stuff they would've got out before when they finally did. Yeah they were dedicated but that was on them not on Charlie. Charlie was mentally deficient. He couldn't persuade a butterfly to fly away. But he had the look that was scary at a time when ppl were scared of all the hippies and long hairs and the motorcycle gangs and all the dope. Charlie was a patsy. Yes they murdered those people but it wasn't some big planned thing or Charlie the mastermind. What a hoot. Charlie the mastermind. Charlie was looking for his next fuck and dope score. All his notes and stuff was the ramblings of a dope smoking wannabe biker. He gathered followers because he had some connections and was a decent scammer. Meanwhile, on Planet Portland, left-wing cyclists are furious.
In a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood, the white yuppie newcomers wanted a new bike lane. (One white newcomer bought a house on a busy street in the historically black area, and of course immediately began working to ban through car traffic from in front of his house. He has a young son, you see, so he deserves a quiet street.) Well, the remaining black residents stopped construction of the bike lane, since it would have cut off access to a couple of places heavily used by blacks, like the local Head Start office. Well, the white newcomers are apoplectic. How dare "these people" block something as useful as a bike lane? Like with the local black businesses being replaced by yoga studios and doggy daycares, this is for their own good. You want to see racism, have black people block something left-wing white people want. (The black residents, of course, are well aware that when the bike lanes come in, the black people move out.) I think the comment about Christianity missed an important point that needs to be kept alive at all costs so I will repeat it here.
The state CAN NOT give charity. It can redistribute, and there are some legitimate reasons for that, but taxes helping the poor is not charity. It never is, and never can be. For starters, the state has no legitimate justification for charity. All expenditures by the state must benefit the large majority of the citizens. Everything else is theft. Second, It is not charity to vote for a policy of taking money from someone else to give to a third. If you want more charity, then fine you are free to give your own money. And people know this. No one votes for higher taxes which they expect to pay themselves. They expect to be able to minimize their burden while forcing others to pay more. This is the opposite of charitable thought. These people talking about Christian socialism are just idiots. Posted by: Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest at March 22, 2019 10:54 PM (LWu6U) 281

Posted by: Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest at March 22, 2019 10:54 PM (LWu6U) --Virtues, such as charity, are individual. It's way to complicated for late on a Beer Night but the Ukraine is a nexus for virtually everyone in the fake Russia scam. McCain, Nuland, Brennan, Obama, Clinton, Manafort and on and on. The group that tried to take down Trump and helped expose Manafort engineered the revolution in Ukraine, with an assist to Soros, that drove out a pro-Russian president and installed a government they could control. Hillary actually did collude with the Ukrainian government to hamstring Trump and the head prosecutor in Ukraine just opened up his own investigation to get to the bottom of it. And it's just so perfect that a crazy old Russian hating bastard like McCain would be caught up in this. I'll try and be more expansive when and if I am ever sober again. This is way too much fun. He obviously already was doing the Divinity school stuff and must have taken some type of officer training. Of course he was already the real deal militarily but that was quite a change in one year.
I also knew a JAG that went to basic training because he thought it was the right thing to do. He had a tough time as he was older and out of shape. He got treated like shit even by basic trainee standards. Posted by: Quint at March 22, 2019 11:32 PM (n13/j) 422

Eventually you can move to making meatloafs and the like Buy a bag if salad, boil potatoes, buy frozen veggies to microwave, make rice, any of these things will pair nicely with with baked chicken or a small roast. Rickl, instead of all lunches and all dinners, try starting out with something smaller.
Try a small roast or a cut up chicken, roast it and use the left overs for lunches. Eventually you can move to making meatloafs and the like Buy a bag if salad, boil potatoes, buy frozen veggies to microwave, make rice, any of these things will pair nicely with with baked chicken or a small roast. Just start out with "I will bring lunch twice a week" and build on that. Posted by: Kindltot Or, on a similar note, roast a whole turkey breast on the weekend. Congratulations. I have two adult sons. The younger has no interest in marriage or family. Older son does want all that. He is a handsome, funny, likeable guy, great career, devout Christian. In short, he's a catch. And yet he has yet to find the right woman. He is finding it difficult to find someone who is not somehow damaged. The dating world is a dark place, even more so for a Christian. My wife and I want to become grandparents, but not if it means my son marries the wrong woman. His patience in this regard is admirable. He will be rewarded someday. Till then, we have nieces and nephews (and grand-nieces and nephews) we can spoil. These people talking about Christian socialism are just idiots.
Then sit them down and tell the story of the master who was to leave town and leave his fortune to be managed by three servants. One was given ten talents, the other five and the third just one talent. The one who had ten double his, dittos with the second, the third did nothing with what was given. When the master returned and noticed the industry of the two and the laziness of the third who did nothing with it, the master took the talent away from the lazy one and gave it to the top producer. Ask them if taking money from the least productive and giving it to the most productive is harmonious with socialism. If they protest, remind them that this is is indeed socialism, the bottom always lose their money to those at the top. Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at March 23, 2019 01:30 AM (lD3vL) 610

There are also Peterson AFB, the Air Force Academy, Schreiver AFB and Cheyenne Mountain AFS. I am sure that things like posting a business as "Off Limits" are coordinated among all of the installation commanders. And as someone noted, official travelers would be affected, military, civilian or contractor. And contractors going to off-base company facilities would also honor the off-limits, especially if charging the travel to a contract. Well, I got some plumbing completed today. I now have water to my new bathtub/shower, and to my washing machine faucets, and it all works. Bad news is the two threaded coupling for the supply lines seep a little water, despite my having used Teflon tape, and tightening the fittings (brass to brass) as much as I dared. I guess tomorrow I will have to turn the water off again, undo the couplings, and use pipe joint compound instead of Teflon tape.

So.. this new movie coming out about the Manson family? It's a sympathetic view of the women caught up in his evil web. Fuck that shit. I won't go see it. I won't spend a penny on anything that puts those bitches in a sympathetic light. Cold blooded killers. They killed Tate who was fucking 9 months pregnant. Stabbed her to death. ... i watched "pee wee's playhouse". there were parts i liked (e.g. the "penny" videos) and others i found obnoxious or grotesque. but it didn't really seem aimed at kids. it was too self-aware, an exaggeration of motifs found in 50's children's tv, in a word ... post-modern, which was at its height back then (mid-80's).

Watched last night's Tucker. Two things struck me.
1. Though I like Tucker, I am tired of his friendliness with that lying POS Chris Hahn. I get having him on, but damn it, hold is effing feet to the fire. Tucker used to have that even lower scum Phillipe Reines on, and again, was friendly to that putrid pile of dung. Even Tucker is a bit too inside. 2. We need to go back to a practice the mother country had in the 16th C. I want to see heads on spikes all around the capital. I'll say it again: Pardon Obama and Hillary, THEN subpoena them. They cannot then plead the fifth, but will still be subject to perjury charges in their testimonies. And their henchmen - they all go to Federal Pound Me Up The Ass Prison. (Those, that is, who are not beheaded.) Posted by: Eeyore at March 23, 2019 06:02 AM (VaN/j) 756

... tarantino is doing the manson movie. it may spark a nostalgia for 60's fashion.

I got sick and tired of sandwiches, so I had the idea of cooking steak and chicken breasts to freeze and microwave for lunches at work. Also it would eliminate the carbs in the bread. It sounded like a good idea.
But I find cooking extremely stressful and overwhelming, so I keep putting it off and just get fast food for lunch. Then I throw out the meat I bought and kept past the expiration date. I repeat this cycle over and over again. Tonight I ate almost a whole bag of Bugles for dinner. That wasn't stressful at all. Maybe I should just forget the whole thing and stock up on TV dinners. I can handle that at least. Posted by: rickl at March 22, 2019 11:20 PM (sdi6R) Rikki - try an Sous Vide cooker. Costs about 60 dollars. It is a metal wand you stick in a pot of water, put your meat in a ziplock bag clipped to the side and just let it work. It never gets overdone since the water temperature stays at 150 degrees. You can then brown the sides if you want or just eat it. You can put some sauce in the bag for flavoring as you cook it too. You can just pop in a frozen breast, it just takes longer.
