Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The allurement that [women] hold out to men is precisely the allurement that Cape Hatteras holds out to sailors: they are enormously dangerous and hence enormously fascinating. H.L. Mencken

Quote II

You cannot extend the mastery of government over the daily life of a people without somewhere making it master of people's souls and thoughts.… Every step in that direction poisons the very roots of liberalism. It poisons political equality, free speech, free press, and equality of opportunity. It is the road not to more liberty but to less liberty. Herbert Hoover

Quote III

Being cynical is the only way to deal with modern civilization — you can't just swallow it whole. Frank Zappa

*****

Paul Joseph Watson on the Manchester attack.

There won't be another TV icon like Roger Ailes. Mark Steyn looks back at Roger Ailes.

He brought that showman's savvy to Fox. As Charles Krauthammer likes to say, Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes discovered an under-served niche market: 50 per cent of the American people. At the time Ailes was on my BBC show, Murdoch's new network was already in the works and the man he'd picked to run it was Andrew Neil, his editor at The Sunday Times in Britain (now at the Beeb and chairman of the Speccie). That fit a Murdoch pattern with his American ventures, of parachuting in someone he trusted from London or Oz (as at The Wall Street Journal and New York Post). This time, though, he had second thoughts: before the project got off the ground, Neil returned to the UK, and Murdoch let Ailes have a completely free hand in reinventing cable news. Within five years, the upstart had overtaken CNN, and never looked back.

Settled science? Settled dogma? Burying Benedict.

Though Benedict is still living, Francis is trying to bury him. Upon his election in 2013, Francis began to pursue an agenda that Joseph Ratzinger had opposed throughout his career. A stress on the pastoral over against the doctrinal, a promotion of diverse disciplinary and doctrinal approaches in local churches, the opening of communion to the divorced and remarried—all these proposals were weighed and rejected by Ratzinger more than ten years ago in a heated debate with Walter Kasper. For better or worse, Francis now seeks to reverse Ratzinger.

The conflict began with a 1992 letter concerning “the fundamental elements that are to be considered already settled” when Catholic theologians do their work. Some theologians had suggested that while doctrine might be universal and unchanging, it could be bent to meet discrete pastoral realities—allowing for a liberal approach, say, in Western Europe and a more conservative one in Africa.

As a conservative Protestant, I find this upheaval in the R.C.C quite interesting.

Do we have a constitutional crisis? The appointment of a special prosecutor may be one.

Rod Rosenstein’s appointment of Robert Mueller to investigate wholly unsupported claims of “links and/or coordination between the Russian government and … the campaign of President Donald Trump” poses the most serious threat to American constitutional government and domestic peace since the Civil War.

Funny, how the same old tired and worn political hacks resurface.

Sheer lunacy on college campuses.

In a recent New York Times op-ed, New York University provost Ulrich Baer argued: "The idea of freedom of speech does not mean a blanket permission to say anything anybody thinks. It means balancing the inherent value of a given view with the obligation to ensure that other members of a given community can participate in discourse as fully recognized members of that community.

Fuck you, you asswipe I strongly disagree Professor Shit-For-Brains Baer.

Notre-Dame-valedictorian.png

Spoiled brats at Notre Dame are concerned about the Muslims of the world.

Heaven forbid we scapegoat them.

College grad, eh? Soft pampered piece of crap. Quite frankly I wouldn't trust him with anything more than a broom and a dust pan.

To resist or not to resist, that is the question. WWII France examined.

In such a situation of shock and bewilderment, it was not obvious what the French should do. Overwhelmingly, they were patriotic, but where did patriotism lie? Most took the view that France had been undermined and betrayed by forces that were not properly French. These should be excluded to restore France’s health and vigour, and the nation’s fortunes should be entrusted to a real military hero, Marshal Pétain. The Marshal met Hitler in October 1940 and shook hands with him, announcing that he was embarking on a strategy of collaboration. This was not necessarily all bad. Its purpose was to bring POWs home sooner, to make it easier to cross the demarcation line between the occupied and non-occupied zones and to reduce some of the financial and economic burdens inflicted by Germany, although in practice the Germans made few concessions. Many people thought that Pétain, while working ostensibly with the Germans, was playing a double game – in secret contact with the British in order to eventually bring France back into the war against Germany.

Hero? Bum? Naked dude loses appeal of TSA fine.

Just over five years after John Brennan‘s heroic (and heroically naked) stand against TSA oppression, the Ninth Circuit has rejected his appeal.

As you may recall, Brennan was arrested in April 2012 after he got fed up with TSA screening nonsense in Portland and decided to strip naked as a form of protest. Although obviously this greatly simplified the screening process—or it would have, if the goal were actually to determine whether a traveler is carrying anything dangerous—the TSA acted like it didn’t, and shut down the checkpoint.

Win some. Lose some. The ONT is surprised that the 9th Circus Court of Appeals didn't throw him a ticker tape parade.

Dogs are noted for their keen sense of smell. Your sense of smell may be better than your dogs.

In 2007, some UC Berkeley neuroscientists decided to work their students like dogs.

They dipped twine in chocolate essence, zigzagged it across a grassy field, and instructed human volunteers to track the scent as if they were bloodhounds. To ensure that they were only relying on their sense of smell, the researchers had their subjects get down on all fours while blindfolded, ear-muffed and wearing thick knee pads and gloves.

The ONT Musical Interlude

May 23, 1970, Paul McCartney's debut solo album, 'McCartney', started a three-week run at No.1 on the US album chart. Apart from Linda McCartney's vocal contributions, McCartney performed (and recorded) the entire album solo. The album featured 'Maybe I'm Amazed', which Rod Stewart and The Faces featured on their 1971 album Long Player.

Just. Because.

You know who you are.

Switzerland has decided to go green. Renewable energy to phase out nuclear.

The Swiss have used their power of direct democracy to end nuclear power. In a referendum on Sunday (May 21), 58.2% voted in favor of a law that will not allow building of new nuclear plants. The country’s five nuclear plants can continue to operate as long as they are safe.

Ludwig van Beethoven, genius musician and sensitive man.

My dear good Emilie, my dear Friend!

[…]

Do not only practice art, but get at the very heart of it; this it deserves, for only art and science raise men to the God-head. If, my dear Emilie, you at any time wish to know something, write without hesitation to me. The true artist is not proud, he unfortunately sees that art has no limits; he feels darkly how far he is from the goal; and though he may be admired by others, he is sad not to have reached that point to which his better genius only appears as a distant, guiding sun.

How America has changed in 50 years.

Readers may disagree as to whether these changes represent social progress or cultural decline, but few will quarrel with the idea that America 1) is bifurcating; 2) has experienced a fundamental cultural transformation in just a few generations.

Here are six statistics that drive home just how much things have changed in America in a little more than a half-century:

21 More than 5 percent, or one out of every 20 searches seeking upstream Internet data on Americans inside the NSA's so-called Section 702 database violated the safeguards Obama and his intelligence chiefs vowed to follow in 2011, according to one classified internal report reviewed by Circa.

The Obama administration self-disclosed the problems at a closed-door hearing Oct. 26 before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that set off alarm. Trump was elected less than two weeks later.

Yeah, I know the political minefield that implies, but really, doesn't any "special counsel" ultimately work for the President?

86 >> Oh Rob!

One of the favorite MTM stories. Carl Reiner used to allow a young, teenaged Meathead (Rob) to hang out on the set of the Dick Van Dyke Show.

Now, remember those Capri pants MTM use to wear. There were ... nice. Well, young Meathead, around 14 or so, couldn't resist them, and grabbed MTM right on the ass one day.

She told Carl. He had a talking with Meathead. Years later, at some reunion party for the cast, ol' Meathead was there. I think this was after the MTM show went off the air, but maybe during the run, I can't remember.

She offered her ass to Meathead again, as a joke. He grabbed it again, and she exclaimed "Oh Rob!"

87 I am still trying to figure out why I, or anyone, should listen and lens weight to the valedictorian up there. I mean, he does not look like he takes himself seriously, why should I? On the other hand, he probably takes himself very seriously, but I just can't get past the hair, let alone his mealy mouthed platitudes.

If you, human, live outside for a long period of time, several weeks, you begin to notice scent that you otherwise wouldn't.

103 Meroving typed this in thread below:

But the thing about "female bond" is there are some (arguably) canon female 00 agents with interesting stories that could make great movie characters, espeically since we're all about "Creative Universes" now.

You could easily make one of those "short season" special productions on Netflix with Scarlett Papava (004) or Briony Thorne (013), or some new 00 agent, and you could even start with and deal extensively with selection and training.

And then that series (or series of movies) would be in the "00 Universe" but not (directly) about Bond.

And then we could have a Felix Leiter movie.

Yeah, these days, I'd rather read more stories set in the Hyborean Age than yet another Conan. I am definitely liking "Rogue One" more than most Star Wars since, oh, 1980.

When they needed milk, the guy would take the carton out and saw a pint off with his bandsaw, wrap up the carton, and stick it back in the freezer. It never occurred to me to ask about how he cleaned the saw.

202 You can search google images, or bing images for Great Lakes Ore Boats in heavy weather, rough water, big waves. Since the 'Fitz' went down, they don't go out in high winds anymore.

There were rumors that they didn't have their deck covers securely fastened. Like 'C' Clamps that have to be hand tightened, and there are a lot of them on each cover, and a six hundred foot long ore boat has a lot of hatch covers. You can get lazy.

But when you have solid water coming over the side, those hatch covers probably won't stay on with only a half dozen C Clamps fastened.

search the images if you haven't seen boats in big waves.

Another ONT topic that might be interesting is lighthouse. Some people collect lighthouses the way train spotters collect trains. We have a lot of maritime history that is interesting.

So anyway, one time Idi Amin and I were at a concert - Throbbing Gristle was opening for Boy George - when Idi wanted an Orange Whip. I walked off to get us a couple when there was a HUGE bang behind me! Yuge!

I spun around to see Idi standing there, his pants in tatters. Everyone looked OK, albeit with parts of Idi's pants and what looked to be bits of furry hot dog stuck to them.

Come to find out Idi not only had been farting in his pants all day - more so than usual due to his afternoon snack of lentil and Brussels Sprout BBQ sandwiches - he ALSO had a weasel in his pants for, ah, shall we say amusement purposes.

And a couple of 9 volt batteries wired up to the weasel to shock him occasionally to keep said weasel, ah, shall we say frisky.

Forensic reconstruction suggested that the weasel, not being best pleased with this situation, was chewing on the wires when they shorted and the methane got 'splody.

I thought for sure we'd be arrested but the nice policeman said it happened all the time at Throbbing Gristle concerts...

I mean, he could accidentally discover the two speeches Bill Clinton gave in Moscow. I think he got paid 700 small ones. (100,000 dollars, small ones in the Clinton Global Initiative).
Or he could trip over the Uranium Deal where Russia got 25% of US Uranium production in exchange for a few medium sized ones. (Million dollars in the CGI).
Heck, he could even trip over evidence of Obama being 'more flexible' after the 2012 election, Hillary 'accidentally' exposing classified information on her Commodore VIC-20 email server or even Ted Kennedy's negotiations with the Russians in an attempt to deny Reagan a second term.

As an alternative theory, iirc all of the attacks lately in Europe have been from people legally living inside the country. How many refugees stop in Italy when they could move on to richer countries like France and Germany?

There was a parody article I read a while back that had the government in Romania (one of the poorer nations in Europe) excited because they'd gotten their first two refugees from the Middle East - a couple of guys who'd gotten lost while attempting to follow a route through Hungary that led to the richer European nations.

But why?
Why?

I think we will never know.

But for some reason, I have read that the military and SAS have actually been deployed within the UK.

Why? Can we name the reason?
It's a mystery.

Even college educated kids from Notre Dame can't figure out what's going on.

Posted by: Bossy Conservative....unfrozen caveman moron at May 23, 2017 10:58 PM (S6Pax)

294 Hat,

I'm sure that has been done somewhere, but I'm too lazy to try to find it. But in the back of my mind, I've been working on it. So far. We have m n-sided dice. Now, look at the probability of getting 1 or more of certain number.

As before, M = 2, n = 6. Total number of states = n^M = 6^2 = 36. Now, look at counting the desired states, which is any state with 1 or more of certain number, say 5.

In your mind, line up the dice. Now, if the first die gets a 5, then we have a hit, not matter what the next (M - 1 ) turns up. So that gives us 1 * n^(M -1). That includes all the possibilities with one 5 on the first and everything else, inlcuding all the multiple hits, 5, 5, 5....

Now, we consider if the first die is not a five. That gives us (n -1) states times an M-1 recursion. That is, (n - 1) times the number of states of M - 1 dice with one of more 5s.

We got a recurrence. The sum of states for the first two times is:

1*n^(M - 1) + (n - 1)*[ 1*n^(M - 2) + (n - 2)*[......].

See the recursion?

This is just for the case of 1 or more of single number. For two or more of single number, that will have to modified. But it will likely be a more general version of the above.

(a bit of contemptuous sarcasm the youngsters don't get, of course - but also literally my usual pattern)

Last year I think I forgot, or was busy with something, and saw one game of the finals. Next season I'll definitely finally get to the local minor league game a few times. Not ridiculously expensive.

More importantly, the pace at Friday scrimmages is picking up again, as some better skaters return, so it's much more fun and a better work-out.

Yes, I understand the advantages that monogamy gives society (hell it is clearly one of the reasons Christendom finally beat Islam...), but the damage from gay marriage, transgenderism and abortion dwarf these concerns to such an extent...who cares anymore?

Single American women are married to Uncle Sam right now...let's let them marry Hollywood celebs and athletes in mass. We already have pseudo-polygamy with "side chicks" common and in many cultural segments accepted.

361 PH,

'scuse me, typing this out on the fly. No (n - 2) progression, but this

1*n^(M - 1) + (n - 1)*[ 1*n^(M - 2) + (n - 1)*[1*n^(M - 3) + (n -1) *[......]

For two dice, that series is (M = 2), n = 6.

1*6^(1) + (6 - 1) *[1*2^0]. The series ends when you get to 0 exponent.

And that is 6 + 5 *(1) = 11. Total number of states is n^M = 6^2 = 36. SO our probability of getting at least one 5 is 11/36 = 30.56%

-------------

Now for three dice, M = 6

1* 6^(3- 1) + (6-1)*[6^(3 -2) + (6 - 1)*[6^(3 - 3)]] =

36 + 5 * [6 + 5*[1]] = 36 + 5*11 = 91. Total number of states is 6^3 = 216. So the probability here is 91/216 = 42.1%

Now, do a sanity check on that. Probability is increasing and from that crude series recurrence above, the probability will increase towards 100% as M increases. The more times we role, the probability of getting at least one or more of a certain number approached 1. That makes sense.

The next step is to clean up that recurrence series. It has a binomial expansion sort of look to me at first blush.

Then, we'd tackle the probability of getting two or more. Formula will get more complex, but will likely be a generalization of the above.

392 Polyamory - while I can't say in favor of it, once adultery laws were thrown out (as well as any other types of co-habitation laws) there simply is no intellectual legal argument against it remaining. (Other than "let's outlaw it because it's icky and we don't like it.")

Consider this: Can a man and a woman live together and have an ongoing sexual relationship if they're not married? Well of course, no argument today.

How about a man and 2 women? Or 2 men and 1 woman? Or 5 men and 5 women, as long as no one says the magic word "marriage"?

Obviously, yes, there are no laws left against those situations anymore.

Consider if 1 man lives with 4 women, and they tell each other that they're all committed to each other and living as a family unit, but they lie to everyone outside about what they privately think and say publicly that they are not married? As long as they make no public and open claim of marriage, then what they do is completely legal.

So, a polygamous relationship between several people today is the only Legal situation I can think that is completely legal under current law as long as everyone publicly and conspicuously lies about it, and which only becomes illegal if one or more of the accused slips and tells the truth about the way they feel about each other.

Hypergamy makes most women think they'd be happier being one of several wives as long as it is to an ultra alpha.

In practice they aren't going to be. Your average 40 year old wife to an ultra alpha isn't happy when he trades her in for a younger model now. Polygamy means he can still marry that younger model and sideline her...and original wifey can't even divorce him and take him to the cleaners for it...

401 The reason I ask about the dice is because it is for a game mechanic. Basically, the player has a certain amount of dice to start with. To do something successfully, they have to roll some minimum number of sixes or fives/sixes.

I wanted the general formula so that I could allocate total starting dice and how many dice to do various levels of achievement.

Each time they roll, they lose one of the die regardless of the outcome. That way it is easy to use it early one, especially with low ranked powers, however it makes it harder to use it later one, especially for the more difficult powers.

C is the combination possibilities ( xCy is choosing y elements out of a set of x things) xCy = x!/(x-y)!y! ... if I recall correctly.

451 The revolt against vows has been carried in our day even to the extent of a revolt against the typical vow of marriage. It is most amusing to listen to the opponents of marriage on this subject. They appear to imagine that the ideal of constancy was a yoke mysteriously imposed on mankind by the devil, instead of being, as it is, a yoke consistently imposed by all lovers on themselves. They have invented a phrase, a phrase that is a black and white contradiction in two words - 'free-love' - as if a lover ever had been, or ever could be, free. It is the nature of love to bind itself, and the institution of marriage merely paid the average man the compliment of taking him at his word. Modern sages offer to the lover, with an ill-favoured grin, the largest liberties and the fullest irresponsibility; but they do not respect him as the old Church respected him; they do not write his oath upon the heavens, as the record of his highest moment. They give him every liberty except the liberty to sell his liberty, which is the only one that he wants.

458 It is exactly this backdoor, this sense of having a retreat behind us, that is, to our minds, the sterlizing spirit in modern pleasure. Everywhere there is the persistent and insane attempt to obtain pleasure without paying for it. Thus, in politics the modern Jingoes practically say, 'Let us have the pleasure of conquerors without the pains of soldiers: let us sit on sofas and be a hardy race.' Thus, in religion and morals, the decadent mystics say: 'Let us have the fragrance of sacred purity without the sorrows of self-restraint; let us sing hymns alternately to the Virgin and Priapus.' Thus in love the free-lovers say: 'Let us have the splendour of offering ourselves without the peril of committing ourselves; let us see whether one cannot commit suicide an unlimited number of times.'

467 I think the question I was going for was slightly different than the binomial distribution. The BD gives the probability of finding a number of "hits", k, with probability p in M independent trials.

For the dice, p = 1/n.

What I was going for was the probability of at least k hits. Not just exactly k hits. So there's going to be a sum of binomial terms there.

469 For all of us who receive that phone call or that e-mail that we never wanted to hear or read, "Come quick,......," I send the following "Road Map," because it is, after all, in times severe and merciless, to poetry that one returns.

The Time of Readiness

"Now comes the Time of Readiness," one said,
The time I never/always knew would come
Not even knowing which (exactly) way it would reveal
itself.
But hearing still the music that is always there,
I hastily assemble all my tools
For that fierce task which we (each) have at hand:

To carefully commit to memory
The fall of light upon your face,
The subtle movement of your hands.
To memorize the constant courage of your almost
smile,
The strength that lies behind each gaze.

I conscientiously record
The timbre of your each and every word,
And measure (to remember) with great care
The touch of your sure hand in mine,
my hand in yours,
As we each took our turns, gifting the world into each
other's life.

For I have need to memorize these certain things
As we complete this (just most recent)
Transformation of our lives.
And so I sear into my consciousness
(For all the time there is)
The clear dimensions of the calm "you-me"
To be the guide through this constricted time.

And, yet, you still surprise me with what I have
always known with you:
"All time is privileged" and all we have to do
(trained as we were),
Is simply, with the gentle and perfected grace,
(trained as we are),
Play out, for all eternity, our ceremony of pledged
love, of fealty, of truth.

And then, beyond all time and space,
Exchange the bright persistent blessing that we share
As we quite clearly come to know and love our own
"becoming"
Now, Here, in this precise and silent gifting of each
each other to the world.

Since forever.

Some years ago, I read a biography written at the end of the 19th century about Salah eh Din (Saladin), the famous Kurdish Muslim general and conqueror.

Skipping over a lot of details, not much has really changed for Muslim in a thousand years. They were bothered that the Christian women in the Christian towns sometimes walked about and spoke without their husbands around.
And Saladin actually tried to live up to Islam ideals, and actually died almost a pauper, because he gave away most of his wealth the indigent Muslims. And as soon as he died, the Muslim Arabs all started to fight over the empire he created and ruled.

Green on Green killin'.
And he was a Kurd, not an Arab.

485 IOW, the binomial distribution answers what is the probability of getting k 5's in M throws of a n-sided dice ( p = 1/n).

For a specific example. What is the probability I will get exactly three 5's in 10 throws of a six-sided dice? Binomial distribution with k = 3, M = 10 and p = 1/6

Now, for the probability of at least 3 5's, we get a sum of the binomial terms of k =3, 4, 5, and 6.

And that should expand to that mess I was working on, which I hope I would've recognized as a binomial expansion/distribution thing. It was already smelling like it. But I'm getting very rusty.

492 So...

Pre-ordered a game (that had already been released in Japan) that came out today through Best Buy. I got the digital download version. Plus it had a pre-order bonus.

Late last night, Best Buy e-mailed me the download code for the pre-order bonus. That's the code I need to enter into my video game console to let the online console store know that I've purchased the product, and am allowed to download it.

While I was at work today, they e-mailed me the download code for the actual game.

So far, so good.

But when I got home today, and tried the download code for the game, I got an error informing me that the code was bad (the actual terminology used was something along the lines of, "This code either no longer works, or has already been used.").

Joy.

I mean, if it had been the pre-order code that was bad, then I could have at least started downloading the game.

So I called Best Buy. After bouncing me around to a few different people, I finally spoke to someone who assured me that a new code would be e-mailed to me to replace the one that was bad.

About forty-five minutes later, I got two new e-mails, both containing codes. One was for the pre-order bonus, and the other was for the actual game. Both of them were the exact same codes that I'd already received for the respective downloads.

So I called Best Buy back again. When someone picked up the phone, I explained that I was calling them back regarding a service request that was already open. He promised to transfer me to the group I needed to speak with... and sent me to an automated system that asks for the extension of the person you want to talk to. After sitting through repeated requests for the extension, a real person finally picked up and transferred my call to the proper department. The person I spoke with got the last few digits of the bad download code from me, and assured me that a new code would be sent to me.

About half an hour later, I received an e-mail with a code. It contained an exact copy of the pre-order code that I'd already received. As of this time, which is now roughly an hour and a half later, I still have not received any additional e-mails - say, for instance, an e-mail containing a new game download code.

Why yes, I'm a bit irritated. Why do you ask?

I think it is the slow, steady drip, drip, drip of cultural Marxism that has been infused into the American consciousness by way of popular entertainment.

People in this country won't embrace open socialism/communism, but they will constantly give lip service to the ideas that bring that kind of totalitarian nonsense to life, because they have been "programmed" to say this stuff.
Unthinkingly, in an unexamined manner.

502 @475 Some years ago, I read a biography written at the end of the 19th century about Salah eh Din (Saladin), the famous Kurdish Muslim general and conqueror.

-----------------------

Yup.

The Arabs like to conveniently forget that little detail when they talk about old Saladin.

It's probably also worth noting that it wasn't the Arabs that brought down the Byzantine Empire. It was the Turks (with some Genoese assistance...).

The only big military win that the Arabs have ever managed to pull off was the destruction of the Sassanid Persian empire. And even that was only pulled off because of decades of a combination of civil war (competing claims to the throne) and plague outbreaks, which badly weakened the Persians just before the Arabs showed up.

In my opinion there is quite a bit of difference between someone who sneaked into a country, is living and working there under the radar, and someone who no fault of their own is deemed to be unfit and to be killed.

Speaking of illegals why is it, when they have been here for over ten years, they still have not bothered to apply for citizenship? It is like they want the benefits of living and working in the US, but do not want to be part of our nation? Why should we let them stay when there are millions of people who bothered to apply waiting for a decade or more for their chance?

The new Samurai Warriors.

I ordinarily go for the physical copy, but I wanted the pre-order bonus (a few new outfits for some of the characters; not a big deal, but kind of cool). And for some reason the pre-order option for the physical version on the Best Buy website was disabled. I would have just purchased the game on the PlayStation store, but for some reason the game literally didn't go on sale on the store until it went live (which is odd - games almost always go on sale on PSN before they go live). I suspect that I would have been fine waiting until the release date, ordering a physical copy, and having it delivered to my local Best Buy (since the Samurai Warriors series doesn't usually attract enough attention to justify stocking it in the store).

Too late now, though.

It's worth noting that now that the game has finally gone up for sale on the PlayStation Network, there's a note indicating that the "pre-order" bonus will actually be available for free for everyone who purchases the game in the first month after release.

NAZI Germany specifically blamed Jews for all the problems of the world. They didn't publicly admit to genocide though when, for example, FDR sent a group of Jewish refugees home he knew bad things would happen to them.

While much of the Arab world is at war with itself, the "refugees" showing up in the west are not an identifiable subgroup. Some are ISIS/AQ leaning, some fascist leaning/and some "moderate".

For those from Iraq, Syria and other hot spots actually at war sending them home would force them to join their "side". If the left is correct, this would be a boon for the moderates as they claim most, if not all, of them are moderate muslims.

Traditionally, young men whose compatriots are fighting for them aren't considered refugees and it is perplexing that we wouldn't immediately execute the Islamists, intern fascists, and send the "moderates" back home with some army surplus gear.

Most of the "refugees" aren't from war zones though anyway. The Muslim world sucks because of Islam. And they are fleeing it while bringing it with them, much like plague victims fleeing Caffa and bringing it to the core of Europe (note this was also caused by Muslims as they used biological warfare against Caffa).

You may ask yourself "why are concert tickets so high?"

The ONLY place artists make money is on concerts. That's all. People don't buy albums, they just download songs.

So artists have to make up the money they lost on album sales. To do that, they put together large concerts and charge exorbitant ticket prices.

Also... IMHO the best place to sit at the concert is near the center of the back of the main floor. Near the sound/lighting boards. That's the position the designers use when creating the shows.

It used to be the other way around. Concerts were almost money losers in order to sell albums. But people are still paying tons of money to download music (those who pay for it). In fact, the margin on streaming and music file sales are far in excess of what they were for physical albums, cassettes, or CDs. The fact is that songs should cost less than 2 cents to buy but they still charge, basically, the same price per song that they were 40 years ago when you buying stamped albums.

Posted by: shibumi at May 24, 2017 12:16 AM (aT+Bx)

Concert prices started rising long before music files and (illegal) downloading) were a big thing. Heck, there were always cassettes that friends would make for you ... The change in concert ticket prices happened when they stopped artificially keeping the prices down and let the almost free market take them over. Tickets are worth whatever a bunch of fools are willing to pay for them ... and there are a lot of fools willing to put out a ton of money for certain tickets.

And illegal downloading never hurt any artists. The more people who illegally download their songs the more people who pay highway robbery prices for them.

You're doing something else. There are no cases with combinations.

12C3 = 12*11*10/3*2*1 = 220

11C3 = 11*10*9/3*2*1 = 165

Combinations are whole numbers - xCy = the number of (unordered) sets of y elements taken out of a set of x elements.

Not all concerts are expensive.

Sure, the big stadium ones can command big prices, but middle-sized venues are still cheap. Just saw Testament, Sepultura, and Prong at a medium sized venue for only $25.

A lot of medium and small sized bands can make more money off of selling vinyl records, CDs, t-shirts, patches, &c. than they make off of the concert.

557 Hat,

Look up the binomial distribution function. All this ASCII equation typing is a mess and error prone. Make sure you've using the exact thing.

The Binomial distribution can be defined as B(k, n, p). That gives us the probability of k "hits" in n (independent) trials, with the individual probability of hit being p.

B(k, n, p) = [nCk] * p^k * (1 - p)^(n - k)

For our dice, p = 1/6 for a given number. k is the number of times, and n is the total number of throws.

The probability of getting 3 '5's in 12 throws is thus:

12C3*(1/6)^3 * (5/6)^(9)

568 That's a good Hoover quote. Here's de Tocqueville on the Nanny State:

"Above this race of men stands an immense and tutelary power, which takes upon itself alone to secure their gratifications and to watch over their fate. That power is absolute, minute, regular, provident, and mild. It would be like the authority of a parent if, like that authority, its object was to prepare men for manhood; but it seeks, on the contrary, to keep them in perpetual childhood: it is well content that the people should rejoice, provided they think of nothing but rejoicing. For their happiness such a government willingly labors, but it chooses to be the sole agent and the only arbiter of that happiness; it provides for their security, foresees and supplies their necessities, facilitates their pleasures, manages their principal concerns, directs their industry, regulates the descent of property, and subdivides their inheritances: what remains, but to spare them all the care of thinking and all the trouble of living?

Thus it every day renders the exercise of the free agency of man less useful and less frequent; it circumscribes the will within a narrower range and gradually robs a man of all the uses of himself. The principle of equality has prepared men for these things; it has predisposed men to endure them and often to look on them as benefits.

After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd."-- What Sort of Despotism Democratic Nations Have to Fear, 'Democracy in America'

Back in the 80s and very early 90s, the left mocked Reagan for helping the Iranians during that war.

After Gulf War I they started mocking him for helping the Iraqis during the same war.

I imagine when we end up at war with Iran in the near future they will go back to mocking him for supporting the Iranians again.

Overall, his policy of trying to keep that war going seems in retrospect brilliant...

Oil change? No dice, LOL.

Here's the key to installing a ceiling fan yourself: get the right size for the room, but make sure it's not heavy.

When you go to somewhere like Home Depot and get a $100+ fan, it's going to weigh a lot, and you need two people to do it.

I got an inexpensive fan ($40) at Kmart, and it was the easiest I've ever put up. Plus.. only 12lbs. Looks fantastic. This is the third or fourth I've done.

12C3 = 12*11*10/3*2*1 = 220

11C3 = 11*10*9/3*2*1 = 165

Combinations are whole numbers - xCy = the number of (unordered) sets of y elements taken out of a set of x elements.

It was the best move possible. As much as I disliked the idea of dealing with the iranians it was more important to keep the two sides close to even and beating the shit out of each other.

The minute the Iran-Iraq war stopped the other hussein turned around and invaded Kuwait, with an eye to the rest of the arab gulf oil fields.

In the end, all threats from the arab/persian/muslim world start and stop with control of the gulf oil fields. If we hadn't let them steal the fields in the forced nationalization waves of the 50s and 60s we wouldn't be facing any of the problems we have from them, now. The quick solution (and, interestingly, the least bloody) is to take the gulf fields. Once those fields are out of APM control they will have nothing. No money. No political power. No strategic power. Nothing. They will be completely neutered and will go back to just stabbing each other in their asses as they are want to do.

No, it actually makes sense. At first, the more dice you add, the likelier you are to get a given number of dice at or above a certain value because you have more opportunities, but once you start adding more and more dice, it becomes less likely because the chance of any dice in excess of your given number all NOT being the certain value drops down like a rock.

"Or"? Why choose? They're all of the above.

Posted by: The Political Hat at May 24, 2017 12:33 AM

My view, for what it's worth and that may not be much... Bar the top headliners (and I'm not sure they're excluded either)...

Nobody really knows anymore.

It all used to be pretty straightforward regarding how to make money off recordings, shows, merch and whatnot. The landscape has changed so much, so quickly (relatively speaking)that there aren't really any acknowledged ways forward. It's pretty much a crapshoot and nobody really knows if they're gonna actually make $$$ off anything, even if it's a success. The general view amongst people is that it's more about having the planets line up, than anything else.

You CAN make good $$$ off this, that or that other, but will you? No idea. Either that, or EVERYONE is keeping their cards close to their chest and not talking about it. All those "how to" opinions on blogs etc are useful info, but won't necessarily work. You've pretty much got to find your own combination of factors and your own path. Too many variables these days for hard and fast "do's" and "don'ts".

Yep. And it is not safe with them, either. They are more than willing to destroy the fields. They don't actually use the fields for anything other than military might. They have no industry, don't build anything, don't do anything useful. When the fields serve them a better weapon in their destruction they are happy to blow them away to hurt us. Saddam showed what the arabs think about the oil fields when he intentionally dumped over 40 million barrels of oil into the gulf and lit just about every oil well in Kuwait on fire (all as we were letting him retreat in one of the most humiliating military losses in all of recorded history).

Why does the damn doorbell work some times, and not others?
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at May 24, 2017 12:59 AM (OdK9v)

Here's a story for you...

My wife and I, newly married, living in our little 900 sf rental house. One day I was going to vacuum, but the vacuum cleaner (flea market purchase) didn't work. Worked fine the previous time I used it. Well, being a fix-it guy, I get out the screw driver & pliers, and proceed to take the thing apart, hoping to find a loose or shorted wire or something like that. All disassembled, dust & parts all over the place... no obvious signs of damage. #*%^#. Put it all back together; still doesn't work.

Then I had a bright idea (my only one in this whole episode). I unplugged the vacuum cleaner, then plugged it in to another outlet. Voila!

But wait, it gets worse...

So why wasn't that outlet working? It worked before...

So I called the landlord and told him one of the outlets stopped working. He said he'd call an electrician.

The electrician comes over the next day. Checks the outlet, confirms there's no power. So he goes up into the attic to check out the wiring. This is in the middle of Summer. He come out of the attic a few minutes later, all grimy and sweaty. Says the wiring is older knob & tube, but he couldn't find any problems with it. He said he'd contact the landlord and work out a time to do a more thorough inspection, and then he left.

Ten minutes later the doorbell rings. It's the electrician. He said he wanted to check one more thing. "OK", I said.

He walks across our little living room, and flips a switch on the wall. Tests the outlet - Bingo.

What the...? We never gave that switch a second thought; never touched it. Well, apparently one of us had...

660 I just read the entirety of the Collaborate or not article. At the end he tried to make the illegals getting deported to be the same as the Jews being shipped to extermination camps.

Well, I've learned a few things since then and I'm now a home inspector... I see plenty of scary electrical stuff. One house had K&T wiring in the attic. The old stuff, with cracked, crumbling, rodent-gnawed insulation. The attic was insulated with old cellulose insulation, and to make everything neat someone had put in a vapor barrier made of metal foil. When I opened the scuttle to inspect the attic, I disturbed the foil enough to cause actual sparks to fly. I quickly exited the attic & shut off all the power to the house.

701 Wish you hadn't posted that rumination on "The Perfect" being the enemy of "The Good", Muldoon. Much to early to be trying to make sense out of that. However, this seems to be where we are.

702 The Tao te Ching also deals a bit with perfection against goodness. "The greatest perfection seems chipped, but use does not wear it out."

The drive to achieve total perfection, and the meddlesome nature that comes along with it, was viewed as creating disaster and bringing greater evils than those they tried to solve.

A good example from more recent history would be Prohibition. In order to combat a relatively moderate alcohol problem, the Temperance Movement ended up turning millions of law-abiding citizens into criminals overnight, fostering a disrespect for the law, and opening the door to hard drugs... problems we're still dealing with today.

In the pursuit of perfect goodness, they brought more evil into the world. When you can settle for "good enough", you can be happy.

I think this concept applies on multiple levels in various ways. For example, the notion of Deplorables. Most of middle America is honest, hard-working, dependable, and lives their life with integrity. Comes the Left, with notions of "you don't live up to our made-up standards of decency, therefore you are Deplorable." At some point, the Deplorables say, ckuf this noise. I quit! A John Galt response. I no longer voluntarily give of my talents to people who consider me less than perfect. Even though I'm pretty damn good.

705 So the "Perfection" discussion got me to thinking about the Historical Society. I wrote the newsletter for years. The first instruction I got from the editor was, "Always leave one mistake in the newsletter. It makes people feel good when they catch it."

I think that applies here but I'm not sure how.

735 And re perfection
While wishing Muldoon was still here for his input

I work in a lab. Accurate results are important.
In every step in the process of an analysis a little error is introduced.
It is only by trying to be perfect in each step that you can achieve "good enough."

That's what I was taught by a fine chemist. Thank you John.
Pretty sure he was correct.

737 In October 2013, Morrissey released a statement through his semi-official website, which said, "Unfortunately, I am not homosexual. In technical fact, I am humasexual. I am attracted to humans. STAY AWAY FROM HUMA, MORRISSEY. THIS IS YOUR FIRST AND ONLY WARNING.

You morons just don't get it, do you? It's not that we have any great love for stinky immigrants. Not in the least.

It's about control. Controlling you. Making sure that you stay under the thumbs of your betters like me.

If you challenge us, we'll cut you down, by some method or another. To prove we can and serve as warning to others who might consider challenging our authority.

So take your punishment. Stand in line. Let authorities grope your private parts. Let your phone and computer be tapped. Shut up about it too when some stinking nut case kills. If you know whats good for you.

In the lab and in the real world are entirely different things, and trying to have too much of a lab mentality where the real world is involved invites disaster.

A real world example of this would be our torpedoes in WWII. They had a problem, in that they simply didn't work right. Our advanced fuses weren't going off properly, and a vast number of easy kills got away from our submarines and torpedo bombers because of it. Even worse, we lost ships we shouldn't have.

What was Washington's response? Since they couldn't replicate the problem in the lab, they kept blaming the users, until it there was such a mountain of evidence that the problem was undeniable.

Perfect solutions work in perfect environments. The world outside of the lab is not perfect, and can not be perfected.
