Planning a trip to Italy?

Although it is easy to forget with the high drama surrounding Trump's EO, the USA is not the only country dealing with immigration issues. Don't know how it will work out, but this sounds like a sensible concept: Italy unveils plan to better integrate fewer migrants.

More than 500,000 migrants have entered Italy since 2014, and nearly 175,000 asylum seekers are waiting in reception centres.

The Italian government on Wednesday unveiled a series of measures aimed at easing the crush of migrants pouring into the country, including a new push at integration. . .

Apparently, some of the people wanting to get into the country are going to be sent back. Faster than they have been sent back in the past. Arrividerci. And fewer migrants may be coming through Libya to Italy in the future.

Here's something I didn't know: In Italy, Islam does not officially exist.

This month, Italy's Interior Ministry and the country's nine major Islamic associations signed an unprecedented agreement. Muslim organizations agreed to create a registry of their imams and to require them to preach in Italian. In return, the government vowed to "facilitate the path" toward the official recognition of Islam in Italy.

Of course, it is hard to even imagine something like that in the USA. How do you think regional history affects the current Italian approach to migrants? Versus, say, the German approach? Looking to brush up on the history of the Roman Empire? "Rome is such a big topic".

The collapse of the Western Roman Empire has two interesting angles to explore. One is why it lasted so long despite the external stresses and the internal conflict. History books do a good job of covering that material. The other angle is why did the Western Empire collapse when the Eastern Empire continued on? That's a subject that offers some insights into why a thousand years later the West was ready to roar past the rest of humanity.

I'm not quite ready for a civilizational collapse in order to fuel a renaissance a thousand years hence. Do you think the current Italian efforts to get the migrant situation under control will help them hang onto their culture for a little longer?

Here is Nat King Cole singing "Arrividerci, Roma" mostly in Spanish. A rebel before his time. When in Rome, sing in Italian! Hasn't that always been the rule? On the other hand, you might want to invite someone to dance with you. Latin style.

28 Islam says that nations must accept Islam, but Islamic nations don't allow the practice of other religions, indeed they persecute them.

This means that as soon as Islam is strong enough in any country, other religions will not be allowed to practice. This is unacceptable. Islam should not be recognized as a religion anywhere until Islam accepts the practice of other religions everywhere.

The acceptance of Islam as a one-way street is suicidal. It enables a ratchet that only moves in one direction, toward the rule of Islam over everyone.

Wow, it's a nice, hope-filled, joyous day!

Amazon is asking for my review of Weber's Shadow of Victory. How does two stars grab you?

I wanted to know more about Gold Peak knocking off Mesa as shown in Cauldron of Ghosts. Instead I got treated to yet another telling of the Mobius uprising along with Indy's rebellion. Let's not even talk about the Polish planet on the Verge, all those names made me flee reading about it and did not detract from the story. I did not care at all to know what the Mesan Alignment was doing until Firebrand stumbled into his personal Waterloo, delete that and Mobius and there goes about 15% or 20% of the book. Also delete Lt. Col. Weng until she is introduced to Daud, there goes another 10% of the book.

After this, I am so done with the Honor Harrington series. No more.

So lets have Italy, alone, or in concert with the EU, invade and conquer Libya, and set up a colonial regime. 45 One thing that makes me think humans perhaps did evolve in warmer climes (like Africa) is that they can't walk barefoot in the snow without getting frostbite, whereas other mammals like wolves can.

But chimpanzees and gorillas seem pretty hairy, compared to humans. If you tossed a chimp or a gorilla onto the Alaskan tundra during winter and supplied them with food, would they be able to survive, or would they die of exposure?

47 I like the idea of making the imams speak in Italian. It forces the members of the mosque to learn Italian themselves, one step towards assimilation. It also helps non-muslims to hear what the imams are preaching. Although perhaps they preach one sermon in Italian, and then "the real" sermon at another time in another place.

Muslim clerics hide behind language - they say one thing to non-muslims and another thing entirely to muslims. I've heard of inter-faith prayer services where the muslim imam prays in Arabic, and in his prayers, he calls Christ a liar and Christianity a false and dangerous religion. But the nice Methodist minister standing next to him nods and smiles because he has no clue what the imam is saying.

52 I posted this for the nightcrawlers last night but you day walkers might like it, too.

Drudge: Junkie Dolphins

In what can only be described as a youngster doing the 'puff, puff, pass', West Australian dolphins may be using blowfish - or 'blowies' - to get high, scientists have found.

. . . .

She said that in Australia, scientists had seen juveniles mouthing blowies in the Leschenault estuary in WA's South West and a sub-adult dolphin carrying an inflated blowie for a few hours in the Kimberley.

Blowies have a lethal toxin called tetrodotoxin, present in their skin, flesh and internal organs.

If consumed, this toxin can be deadly to predators, including humans.

. . . .

According to the documentary, small doses of the toxin have a narcotic effect and the program considered it as recreational drug use by dolphins.

However, I don't think it works with the Soros plan of "get rid of nations and create a one world government by bringing in billions of Muslims and outbreeding Europeans."

Also... not really sure if the conquer gene still exists in Western Europe.

What I don't get, is if they have so much MuzzLove, why not emigrate to a Muslim country, become citizens, and petition the government to admit the refugees there?

Why do they feel the need to inflict Islam on the rest of us? There is something insincere about their concern, since it seems more like a desire to exercise power over others than some personal cause they care about.

Like PETA members who seem to delight in cruelty against their fellow humans more than they care about saving animal lives (which, as it turns out, they don't really).

But "Islam" isn't really very homogeneous anyways, is it? There's assloads more versions of Islam than Sunni and Shia, and even within all those versions, there's been tons of disagreements over doctrine and jurisprudence stuff over the years.

They hope that if conservatives get scared about Gorsuch they can keep him from being confirmed and it will be a morale boosting victory even if the 2nd choice is also conservative. We have been burned by Roberts and other R appointed judges so we are of course leery, but when the FNM is trying to convince me that I should distrust Gorsuch, then *I* assume they really fear him and going all in on the psy-ops against him.

That's a very weighty subject. Did you mean to venture an opinion? Me, I think it's because overly centralized and stultified civilizations do well for a while, then collapse catastrophically because they're unable to adapt to new situations. Rome was calcified. So was Byzantium, but maybe less so, at least for another 1000 years.

Apparently it is only an idiomatic statement, but taking a viper to one's bosom is fitting here, I think. Yes, we need to be compassionate to help those in need. But it seems that the ones in need are not being helped-the Yazidis and the Christians in the Middle East, who are being terrorized. The demographics of the majority of "refugees" being brought in fit the profile for active terrorists: 15-40, male, single. Those are the fighters in these imbroglios, not the victims. If the government was bringing in primarily women and children, that would be one thing-and even then, they should be vetted out the wazzou, just as we would vet for immigrant visas, which is essentially what we are issuing.

God calls us to be compassionate, but He doesn't call us to be idiots.

Yes, but you did not think, "These filthy kuffir do not eat lutefisk! Uffda! I will keel them!". Likewise most Jews assimilate pretty much seamlessly (although the left wing numbskulls, like my father, piss me off).

When you talk about the stranger, the orphan and the widow, you are taking that from the OT, I believe. Well, the OT also had very strict laws against other religions, so that (in Deut) even if your brother said, "come worship other gods with me", that was a capital offense.

That is just to say that I think that when the OT says to be compassionate to the alien and the widow, there is an implicit assumption that these will not be people whose values are diametrically opposed to those of your society. I also think that ancient Israel did not have the options like we have, of for example brokering a deal with an Islamic nation to set up camps for real refugees until the conflict ends, and rewarding them financially for their troubles.

198 I am becoming wearisome about this, but if you haven't read 'The Camp of the Saints', you ought to. It's pretty damned frightening. A novel, written in 1973 !

Excerpt from a review:
Abandon any thoughts of "political correctness" when reading this book. It presents the reality of the world's population rather than a Utopia of the brotherhood of mankind. As a a non-white character from the book, Monsieur Hamadura, who has embraced France and its culture points out, it's not only race that matters, but the whole common culture, language, and heritage that is threatened by a massive influx of people of other backgrounds. The message and the warning presented is: in a war of the haves versus the have-nots, it is the haves who will lose if they are unwilling or unable to defend themselves against the invaders.

Hardly. Just go look at Kelly Ayotte's "explanation" of what was said. She is representing Gorsuch and did not deny that he was quoted accurately. All she added was:

"it's important to clarify that the judge's comments were not about a specific case. They were more generic about comments from any source that do not go to the merits of the case and that he felt very strongly about the independence of the judiciary."

But the judiciary is not really "independent" in that way. Judges can be impeached and tossed off the bench - as many of them certainly should be. That is the interconnection between the judiciary and Congress where it is made clear that the judiciary does not have the last word on what is or isn't Constitutional. Congress has the same task of defending the Constitution - against rogue and retarded judges - as the judiciary has.

What Gorsuch said (that neither he nor his representative Ayotte have denied in any way) was retarded and gratuitous. The other branches of government have responsibilities with respect to an out-of-control judiciary ... that the Congress has, sadly, never even tried to live up to.

214 Well, time to go meet the day. I am messing with my TR6. I had to cut the ignition switch out of it. They fastened it to the bottom of the steerin column with "security screws", the heads of which snap off once torqued up. Of course, being british, the screws worked loose. But still can't be unscrewed. And the ignition switch was in a very awkward location; pretty much had to reach through the steering wheels to operate it. So it's going to get a "generic" ignition switch in a blank spot in the lower dash amongst the heater controls.

Certainly should be. Lifetime appointments are very, very dangerous things and those who get them need to be held to the highest standards. The minute a federal judge issues a decision or makes any sort of ruling that is clearly un-Constitutional that judge needs to be impeached and tossed off the bench.

I understand the Founders' reasoning that lifetime appointments would free the judges from contemporary politics but lifetime appointments also free judges to immerse themselves in their contemporary politics and, with no threat to their lifetime tenure, allow them to ignore the Constitution, the law, and anything they don't feel like being bound by.

Lifetime appointments are such powerful tools that those holding them must not stray from their tasks and the law. The minute they do they need to be out.

Funny - it is absolutely certain that if you went to actual immigrant communities (legal immigrants), there'd be not the slightest panic. Depending on which community, there'd be satisfaction on the measures finally being taken to enforce undisputed laws after decades of lawlessness.

But since we live in a dumbed-down, media-warped civic culture where Barack Obama could be considered for any public office, the adults do need to get out there and counter the black propaganda offensive - which is probably just starting.

265 Do you think the current Italian efforts to get the migrant situation under control will help them hang onto their culture for a little longer?

Italian culture has been eroding for some time, but not due to islamic influence. American pop culture is the culprit. I've made frequent trips to Italy over the years, and noticed a big change in the late 1990s. Kids were wearing hip hop attire - in my family's hometown way up in the mountains, we're not city folk. When I made my usual pilgrimage to the shoe boutiques, I found American and British looking footwear. Che sciagura!

And the attitudes toward family and religion were moving far away from what is considered traditional Italian. Maybe the islamic influx will do something to help my people remember their roots.

I do know there have been demonstrations in the streets of Rome against housing for "refugees", since native Italians are homeless due to economic instability post-Euro (currency).Romans want the natives' situations to be addressed before Lo Straniere is welcomed and accommodated.

If jihadi muslims equate Christianity with Catholicism, it's due no doubt to their militaristic bent. They know that the Crusades and their greatest military defeats occurred under the aegis of Catholic leaders.

267 On judicial lawlessness, the understandable instinct is to just work around it - not try to fix it. Fixing it would be "haaaaarrrd" (true).

Looks like we'll be getting another round of adapt to judicial tyranny, instead of crushing it.

But maybe it's not so dark - because if you give Hitler the Rhineland and the Sudetenland without a shot, you'll be getting more chances to stand up to him, guaranteed.

If the absurd malfeasance of the WA district and the 9th does not get reversed or repudiated - in its own terms, not through finesse - we can surely expect more "opportunities" for the administration and Congress to do their jobs.

Minor chance that the audacity of the malfeasance has scared enough of the judiciary - fearing, at last, some reassertion of reason and the rule of law by the adults, due to the severity of the provocation - that the coup attempt will be allowed to whither away.

I would disagree. The existentialist finds nothing more than the physical world, which immediately removes all possibility of meaning in life - since meaning requires an existent meta-system.

What happens with existentialists is that they cannot face the logical consequences of their own theory and set about trying to pretend that this or that is "meaningful". But it's all a hoax and they know it. Just some contrived thought games they use to pass the meaningless time they claim is the actual nature of reality. They have removed all possibility of meaning in their initial formulation.

Luckily, for existentialists it doesn't matter ... because everything is meaningless in the end, anyway.

I think even where they can find no meaning, they at least consider it something of value, and the quest for it to be something important. In Nausea, I think Roquentin was continually appalled by the absurdity around him (eg. the Self Taught Man). 279 Whoa, the video (body-cam?) of the cop doing the taxpayer relief shot on a noble oppressed hero in Baltimore (WeaselZippers) is interesting.

It's too shaky to see exactly what happened, but obviously our hero, instead of surrendering (it was a foot chase right out in the street) must have attempted to raise his gun at the officer.

Also, the (presumably under-cover) cop has impressive sleeves (tattoos) as shown in the video.

One of the essential features of quantum theory is that the statistics of certain events occurring demonstrate that it almost definitely cannot just be an underlying determinism that is merely given a statistical description. Quantum theory, itself, does not really allow for the possibility of an underlying deterministic universe. The non-deterministic, statistical nature of the Quantum universe is fundamental, not ancillary.

There's a lot to it, so it would probably be pretty hard to wrap the whole thing up neatly, I think. The best I (not an expert) could do is give a little snapshot.

So, the model of the atom that we all learned in school, with the protons and neutrons in the nucleus like the sun, and the electrons orbiting around it in defined levels like planets? Turns out it's not like that. Electrons will be somewhere in those orbits, but they don't orbit the nucleus, they have a probability of being at any point in that orbit.

"Light" is photons, right? But are they waves on the electromagnetic spectrum, or particles with their own mass? Turns out, they're both, depending on which you ask them to be at any time.

As far as my understanding goes, two quantum systems can certainly be in the same exact state but the act of observation is then the problem. Without the observation the two continue along in the same evolution ... but there isn't really much meaning to that until the observations. So ... Heisenberg, I would guess, says that the observations cannot be exactly the same ... Not just cannot be known to be but there isn't even any meaning to claiming that any two particles have the same exact momentum and (relative) position.

I can't vouch for what I'm saying here, but I think this is pretty much the situation.

343 The problem I see often is that lefties think it's ohhh so easy to assimilate foreign lower class people. They think "Muslim immigrants" and they think of the well-educated Iranians whose grandparents fled after the Shah was overthrown.

When I lived in Metro Detroit, the Sunni and Shia leaders in Dearborn met regularly as part of an interfaith group in order to work together and nip problems in the bud. It made sense to me. The second- and third-generation Americans knew their history, loved the US, and sure didn't want religious violence imported with newcomers.

But the "elites" don't know anything about culture shock or tensions between subgroups. They're so used to controlling the culture and pushing a political POV, they think that immigrants will be so grateful that they'll abandon their beliefs and upbringing. I mean, doesn't everyone aspire to be a secular socialist servant of the state?

347 So ...

That's my understanding of it in a nutshell, too. The formulation of the HUP in bra-ket notation is basically the "F=ma" of Qmech, so it ought to have some deep underlying significance. Don't ask me what that formulation is though, cause i can't remember. I'm totally armchairing it at this point.

Meh (on the substance).

The sort of "protests" and rabble-rousing the affirmative action intern and his ilk can instigate won't have any effect, other than to alienate more people, when they get messy.

Sort of like the current GOP townhalls. Seems a vanishingly small chance these loudmouths represent anyone but themselves and the usual suspects in terms of organizations (SEIU, et al).

But it's delicious, hilarious, to hear these idiots talking about protecting Obama's legacy - unpopular, absurd, failing nonsense that is already being dismantled or falling apart on its own.

To the extent these efforts by the Obama types remind people of the connection between things they hate (O-care, mass illegal migration) and things they doubt or rate as of little importance ("climate change"), they only keep those anchors firmly attached to Dems' electoral necks.

Irresponsibility, stupidity, and cowardice by the GOP remain 10,000 times the threat to progress that Obama and his play-army represent.

372 Very gratified to see the ICE enforcement actions, and especially to see the "panic" among the right "communities".

But I still think a graduated, gradual overall enforcement policy makes sense.

1) Empty jails/prisons, and lists of convicted felons on release (like the woman in Phoenix) - deport those first

2) Sit down with large companies and sectors known to employ the most illegals (food processors, agriculture, etc.) and give them a glide-path to legal labor - 6 months or something to wean themselves off illegals, with the prospect of legal, contracted, regulated labor to replace it (but with "prevailing wage" and other guard-rails to minimize displacement of actual, available local labor)

3) Sit-downs with small businesses that have become dependent on illegals (construction, etc.) in many regions, giving them time and a deadline to replace *their* illegal labor (with the attention-getter of raids on their job sites in the near future if they don't hop to it)

4) Legal and budgetary (appropriations) actions to attack sanctuary cities/states directly, from judicial actions to void laws (federal pre-emption) to high-impact administrative moves (blocking use of drivers' licenses etc issued to illegals) to SCOTUS-proof appropriations strategy that simply cuts $$$ to lawless states with the conditionality implicit

The feds do these things - the water temperature will be so dramatically changed that, as Trump himself commented at some point, they'll be leaving so fast you're head will spin

This is the 40-some odd-% who voted for Hillary! maintaining the same stupid policies and attitudes which lost them the last election,

so good.

The not so good part is that "community organizing" is simply blackmail writ large in that it's purpose is to commit violence and damage property in order to make the day-to-day functioning at a company or local gov't impossible,

then the blackmailer(community organizer) gets what he wants to make it stop.

But, since this activity will require crossing state lines, etc-

this brings and should bring RICO into play along with asset seizing if Trump and the DOJ wish to play hardball. Obama and Soros could find themselves very poor very fast.

Not to mention attempting to subvert a legitimate gov't and it's activities, well that just falls afoul of all kinds of federal laws.

Again, if Trump is willing to play hardball.

Several of the well-known, big money libs also have coordinated against US interests with foreign gov'ts in the open at places like Davos. Easy peasy to go after them under the law.

A few big-name cases prosecuted under RICO and this nonsense will stop dead in its tracks.

377 No, the only solution is to keep them in their home country and provide them with assistance there.
Posted by: pep at February 11, 2017 12:23 PM (LAe3v)

How many billions of dollars have gone to "developing" countries over the decades to provide assistance with nothing to show for it?

Triage might work better. Country A is in pretty good shape so we don't need to help. Country B is a hopeless basket case so we can't help it. Country C has some good basics and seems to be trying so let's help until they become A or B.

That's at the government level. If you or I want to send our own money to any of them, subject to federal laws, we can.

But no matter what, each and every country has the duty to check and double check anyone from anywhere wanting to enter for any reason.

She's being a jerk. It happens to everyone from time to time.

My darling has many fine qualities, but he recently explained that I baby my tools and they're not fragile. He had started using my multi head screwdriver to pry open a crusty can of paint, so I'd handed him the paint can opener. It's how my dad broke his same screwdriver and Craftsman's replacement wasn't as good.

I admit that if he ever complains to me that his lawnmower is rusting, I'm going to remind him that the tarp blew off in the fall and he was too lazy to replace it or make room in his garage. Because I'm the future patron saint of jerks!
