Tuesday Overnight Open Thread (12/20/16)

berlin-wall.jpg

On this day in history, 1963, the Berlin Wall is opened for the first time.

More than two years after the Berlin Wall was constructed by East Germany to prevent its citizens from fleeing its communist regime, nearly 4,000 West Berliners are allowed to cross into East Berlin to visit relatives. Under an agreement reached between East and West Berlin, over 170,000 passes were eventually issued to West Berlin citizens, each pass allowing a one-day visit to communist East Berlin.

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The fall of the Berlin Wall makes for nice pictures. But it all started in the shipyards. Lech Walesa

Quote II

Fall of the Berlin wall? Being there was fun. Nations that flaked off of the Soviet Union in southeastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus? Being there was not so fun. P. J. O'Rourke

Quote III

General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate.
Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate!
Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall! President Ronald Reagan

Quote IV

Ronald Reagan will be remembered for leading the United States during a time of tremendous international transition - the demise of the Soviet Union, the Berlin Wall coming down, and the end of the Cold War. Mary Landrieu

Busy day on the calendar tomorrow, December 21st.

The first one is National Urban Outdoorsmen Homeless Persons Remembrance Day.

Local groups across the country are encouraged first to determine the number of homeless persons in their community who died in the previous year and then arrange a ceremony to remember them. Candlelight marches, vigils, graveside services, plays and performances, religious services, and public policy advocacy are the suggested ways of remembering. Some groups have read publicly a list of names of the deceased. Use #HomelessPersons’RemembranceDay to post on social media.

Feelings, nothing more than feelings.

Many of the homeless are alcoholics, drug users/abusers and those with mental illness. A recent study reveals that there are casual links between marijuana and schizophrenia.

Summary:
People who have a greater risk of developing schizophrenia are more likely to try cannabis, according to new research, which also found a causal link between trying the drug and an increased risk of the condition.

The second big event tomorrow on December 21st is the December/Winter Solstice. Day light will be increasing ever so minutely. Although by the time February rolls around it will be noticeable. Not sure where you are located but your humble Cob has already has had his share of "winter" weather.

You hear about women and the glass ceiling. How about women and the glass autopsy table? Equal occupational fatality day will be on February 19, 2027.

Groups like the NCPE use “Equal Pay Day” to promote a goal of perfect gender pay equity, probably not realizing that they are simultaneously advocating an increase in the number of women working in higher-paying, but higher-risk occupations like fire-fighting, roofing, construction, farming, and coal mining. The reality is that a reduction in the gender pay gap would come at a huge cost: several thousand more women will be killed each year working in dangerous occupations.

Do you like to drink beer? Do you make beer? Everything you wanted to know about beer styles. (Really cool interactive table)

The Beer Judge Certification Program lists 100 styles with defined ranges of alcohol by volume (ABV), bitterness (measured in IBUs, or International Bittering Units), and color (measured using SRM, or Standard Reference Method).

Below is a series of charts for all 100 styles. Mouseover any style for more details and commercial examples. Rectangles to the top right corner represent beer that is high in alcohol and high in bitterness. In contrast, a rectangle in the bottom left corner represents a beer that is low in alcohol and low in bitterness.

33 You can have both genetic factors and "environmental". I've got this damnable rheumatoid arthritis for example. There's a genetic component. They haven't gotten it exactly pinned down, but they see various genetic variations.

But it by itself, that won't trigger it. It takes some environmental trigger. It's something, some antigen of sorts, something that gets the immune system fired up in a specific way, which the genetic screw-up then causes said immune system to start attacking one's own tissue in the joints.

60 I have a fall of the Berlin Wall story. I had been through it and into East Berlin in 1980 and 1984. When Reagan gave his "tear down this wall" speech I thought it was just political posturing.

Yeah, so I was wrong.

The Wall came down in November '89. I was there in December. Street vendors were selling chips from the wall with hand-stamped certificates of authenticity.

I wanted a piece, but I wanted my own. I negotiated with one of the vendors to use his hammer and chisel so I could get my own pieces.

I'll tell you, if the commies were good at anything they could make concrete. I got a few interesting shards but that was really freaking hard concrete.

85 I'm assuming there are plenty here who aren't old enough to remember Reagan's "tear down this wall moment". I was 28; Reagan was in the last six months or so of his 2nd term. The story with the Russians was how well Reagan and Gorbachev seemed to be getting along. For someone of my age the Berlin Wall was simply a fact of life, like the Grand Canyon or Lake Michigan. And now this evidently senile Reagan was standing in front of it and calling for it to be torn down?

Yeah, I never voted for Reagan. But twenty years later I shed tears at his death and prayed we might someday see his like again.

Bander! I was there in early January with my husband, on our honeymoon! We actually honeymooned in London, but when the wall started coming down in November we added in a side trip to Berlin for a few days, and stayed with friends of my parents in West Berlin. They gave us a pickax, and off we went to the wall. My husband was able to get some big chunks of it - we came home with a bag full. We've given it to family and friends. We're weird like that.

90 Clayton Cramer has an amusing video up about voter id. The guy in the video first visits college campuses to see what the people there think about voter id laws. Unsurprisingly, they think the laws are racist because Black people have trouble figuring out how to get id. Then he went to Harlem to see what the Black people there had to say.

101 85 I'm assuming there are plenty here who aren't old enough to remember Reagan's "tear down this wall moment".

A flock of idiots (aka "busybodies") decided one fine day that since there had been some incidents of families locking away members of the family for less than legitimate reasons in their friendly local mental institution, no adult, however incapable of taking care of themselves, should be placed in a mental facility against their will. Accordingly, my uncle was asked if he wanted to remain at Ancora, and he said "no". So the state authorities kicked him loose. The last reliable sighting of him was on Skid Row in Camden, NJ.

So many of these mentally ill homeless would be in facilities where they are kept on their meds and off the streets if the busybodies hadn't thrown the baby out with the bathwater. But the busybodies are always the first to point the finger when it is mentioned that so many homeless are mentally ill.

That can also happen here. A son of one of my dad's co-workers had spina bifida. As an adult he qualified for disability, housing, job training, everything. He chose to live in the streets. The newspaper did a story on the disabled guy living in the street. They made it look like he was there because no one cared about him. They never mentioned the fact that he made a conscious choice to live like that. His mother, a home owning widow would have taken him in at the drop of a hat. The whole thing just broke her heart. He died before too long.

His problem with the public housing was that he didn't like the rules.

130 Deplorable lady, the homeless situation (particularly of the late 1970s/early 1980s) was a perfect storm of short-sighted thinking on the left and the right.

The ACLU was agitating, saying no one who's ever been institutionalized, should be held against their will, *if they can't be shown to be a danger to themselves or others.* There was actually a battery of laws, starting in 1969, called "LPS" that began this process; I learned about this at my last job, which was at an actual California state mental hospital.

And conservatives believed states could save tons of money if they let these same people go as well. So they were released, many of whom not really ready, in the name of civil rights *and* budget cuts.

139 It's not just schizophrenia but psychosis in general. What can be said is there is a correlation between marijuana use *at a young age* and developing some psychosis. There is no causality proven either way.

You see stuff about marijuana use causing changes in the brain that *could* cause it, but nothing is proven.

A young age, 18 through the 20s is when a lot of these mental symptoms first appear, and that's also when people start "experimenting" with drugs as they say.

It could be that people with these symptoms are trying to self-medicate, as it were, trying something to get away from the mental hell they're starting to experience.

Wow - that's really ignorant.

Slightly off-topic. There's a great book on Reagan, Thatcher, and JP II. One thing that's incredibly striking is the first chapter, which discusses where each was ten years earlier, in 1970. JP II was a POLISH priest, behind the Iron Curtain. Thatcher was a middle-aged FEMALE bureaucrat in British government. And, yeah, Reagan was a gov, but he had been an actor. What kind of odds could you have gotten that those three would bring down the evil empire in the '80's? And where was Lech Walesa in 1970?

164 There was actually a battery of laws, starting in 1969, called "LPS" that began this process; I learned about this at my last job, which was at an actual California state mental hospital.

===

To be fair, I lthink California has done a better job of de-institutionalizing people with disabilities than any other state. But it has fallen short when it comes to people with mental illness. The biggest difference probably lies in the fact that developmental disabilities are generally not treatable but mental illness is. The treatment itself is the source of contention.

Fact is if people stay on their meds, they feel good, and then they stop taking their meds. How do you make them take the meds and not offend their free choice?

174 San Franpsycho, yup.

When I was working in the Skilled Nursing Facility at Metropolitan State Hospital, it had become state law for *every* patient, in every ward, to be evaluated for their ability (or inability) to re-integrate into society. A report for every single person had to be compiled every month, and a copy of same had to be offered to the patient for review, so that they could tell their treatment team what they liked, what they didn't, what they wanted changed, etc etc.

It kind of worked; I actually saw a few patients get released. But there were others for whom, the whole thing was a paint-by-numbers sham. They were *never* going to be well enough to be released, and I think even most of the patients themselves knew that.

I sat there scratching my head, knowing something fishy was going on.

Months later, hubby and I sat in our living room, slack-jawed with amazement as we watched live the people on both sides of the Berlin Wall took sledgehammers and anything else they could get their hands on to tear the Wall down. I think it was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen.

The Wall

Turned on the news in November '89
I could not move, I could not speak
Something was burning up in my eyes,
Something wet ran down my cheek
All those laughing faces, all those tears of joy
All those warm embraces of men and women, girls and boys
Sisters and brothers dancing, all singing freedom's song
God, if only I could be there to shake your hands and sing along
Oh I, I would climb right up on that wall
And join you all dancing on the wall
Standing tall walking on the wall
Tear it down, right down to the ground

188 Jay, I'm not disagreeing, just saying there were also other factors in play.

Those factors may have played a role in the run-up to O'Connor v. Donaldson, but that case was dispositive. California had its own legislation (the name and proponents of which I've forgotten, but were liberals) on this point, but once the Supreme Court rendered its decision, that was that. Budget cuts etc. were irrelevant (although they are a favored liberal meme to share the blame with conservatives, and/or to push off most of the blame onto conservatives). The Supreme Court said that this is how it's going to be. Period. There was no discretion, no policy decision at the local level, any more than there is about Miranda rights. Read the link on Wiki about this decision.

Unfortunately, because this policy arose from a Supreme Court decision, effectively only the Supreme Court can overturn it. In the meantime, we're stuck with assorted lunatics running around loose on the streets.*

*Recently we had a guy try to shoot up an elementary school a mile away (fortunately, some gardeners tackled him). The perp was a total nut job and a frequent flyer (monthly) with the local police, who were asked why they hadn't done anything about him. Their answer: because of O'Connor v. Donaldson there was nothing they could do until he posed a manifest threat to himself or others.

Some might call it a slippery slope but at some point you must be able to declare someone a danger to society and force institutionalization.

I had a diagnosed schizophrenic neighbor who lived alone and would not take her meds. One night she drove her car into another neighbors gas meter and continued to drive to her house and locked herself in. The block had to be evacuated until they repaired the gas line. The police were called but they refused to take her in whereas I would have been in the back of the squad car if I had done what she did.

Posted by: San Franpsycho at December 20, 2016 10:47 PM (EZebt)

++++

You make their freedom contingent on showing up at a facility to take their meds. It would be more expensive than just giving them a prescription and sending them on their way. But, that kind of requirement could be limited to those who have a) already demonstrated anti-social behavior, and b) those who have demonstrated that they can't be trusted to stay on their meds on their own.

If you are dealing with someone who is a danger to themselves or others when they are off their meds and they refuse to stay on their meds, society has to do something to protect itself. And, this intermediate kind of step would be better than institutionalization, at least for those who would respond to this kind of regimentation. If they won't anyway, then into the funny farm they go.

210 There were terrible abuses in the past, but we've gone way too far in the other direction with the mentally ill.

Nothing can be done until someone gets to the point (if ever) where they are violent, and then that means calling the cops, and it doesn't usually end well. There was no need for it to get to that point if something could've been done beforehand.

I'm resistant to the notion of giving some credentialed professional (ie psychiatrist) the power to declare someone incompetent and take away their rights and put them away.

That power was abused in the past.

But yet, that's exactly what needs to be done in some cases. You'll hear people talking about how powerless they were when a family member was clearly going batshit and there was nothing they could do until it got to the point the person was violent.

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your request about receiving your funds early. I appreciate your feedback about our disbursement process, and understand why you need your funds as soon as possible. I'll definitely share this feedback with my team. That said, unfortunately we won't be able to expedite your funds.

Indiegogo has a thorough review process that each and every campaign undergoes before we send any funds to the bank account linked to the campaign. Once a campaign ends, or bank information is updated, the campaign enters our disbursement cycle the following week. That is when the campaign is reviewed by our Trust and Safety team. Campaigns are then disbursed in a batch once a week.

I'm unable to give you the exact details that our Trust and Safety team takes, or the exact stages that our disbursement process consists of.

I'm very, very sorry and thank you for your understanding!

My response:
Christine,

Thank you for your timely response.

My bank info is completed, and since I have used Indiegogo in the past and had no issue collecting my funds then, and my info has not changed, this should not be a concern.

It has also been over 30 days, and I have attached a screenshot that states that my funds would be disbursed the week of December 12.

I started this fundraiser after my husband passed away on Nov 9th to cover his funeral expenses and find his daughters, as well as to pay bills. It is now a week before Christmas, and I will most likely have to push back his service until after the new year.

I'm not asking for anything to be expedited. I'm just asking you to fulfill your end of the deal.

Rosemary was one of the most famous cases and reasons (rightly or wrongly), why mental hospitals today have such a shitty reputation.
Posted by: qdpsteve at December 20, 2016 11:05 PM (u8kLQ)

In fairness, at one time lobotomies were considered to be sound therapy. The inventor of the procedure, a Portuguese neurologist (IIRC) won the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology in the late 40s (again, IIRC), considerably after Rosemary Kennedy's lobotomy.

Only later did it fall out of favor.

That doesn't bother me at all. A person there has been convicted of a crime, and deprived of their freedom by due process of law as it were, charged and convicted by a jury.

The parole board just decides who to give a break.

In this case we're talking about depriving someone of their freedom out of the blue, who hasn't committed a crime yet, much less been convicted and sentenced.

You're giving that special class of credentialed professionals the power to do what otherwise requires due process of law, conviction by a jury in a court of law.

I'm doing pre-preparation to becoming a CPA in North Carolina and in Tennessee. If you've never been involved with it, you don't know how touchy states can be if you say "I'll do your accounting" without having a license in that state. Like a lot of things in accounting, there's a "scavenger hunt" phase, an "organization" phase, and a "put in proscribed format" phase. And, like nearly everything in accounting, there's deadlines.

And, there's also twists that CPA-types can take advantage of. For example, if I applied to join the North Carolina Society of CPAs two weeks ago, I could have gotten a $60 discount on the legal and ethics review course I just took.....but if I wait until after January 1, my initial year's dues will last to 6/30/18 instead of 6/30/17 -- which is worth more than $60. I think they intentionally throw some of this stuff at you to make sure you're a pennypinching mercenary who is likely to fit in.

(I'd be the first one carted off to the funny farm. Anyone with a blood connection to my mother should be born with a prescription for Paxil in one hand and a prescription for lithium in the other.) But there should have been some middle ground. My mother couldn't have my uncle in our house because he was prone to picking up knives and attacking random people. But he wouldn't stay on his meds without proper oversight. Surely there could have been some arrangement for people like my uncle, some sort of halfway program that would have given him both structure and freedom. Instead, he was simply sent on his way with no resources because at that moment in time he was judged not to be an immediate danger to himself despite a history of violent attacks on members of his family and strangers.

For one thing, we should have disbanded NATO then, rather then expand it to Russia's borders.

It would have also been nice if we had somehow been able to help them transition to free-market capitalism, but the West is hardly an exemplar of that at the moment.

It seems like fascism is now the default political/economic system worldwide. In China, which still maintains the symbols and trappings of Communism, the People's Liberation Army owns and operates profit-making businesses.

Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius)

That's true, but someone has to make the decision. There are people out there who are very dangerous, not because they're criminals, but because they're mentally ill. I can think, off the top of my head, of three horrible murders in my area committed by people who were "off their meds". The family members feel helpless because they try to get help, and the system intakes the person for 72 hours, then turns him loose.

These were completely senseless murders. The victims hadn't done anything to anger the person.

Just up two posts on the main blog, you have "the wages of hate" about some guy shooting a UPS guy because he believed him to be Donald Trump. I had a coworker 30 years ago who believed she recognized one of her school chums from behind in a department store -- snuck up and playfully nipped him on the back of his neck. When he turned around and wasn't the right guy, she passed out cold. Under the law, how do you distinguish these?

374 I had an uncle I never met because he spent his life in the New Jersey state insane asylum (Ancora).

Yes, another tragedy facilitated by the left.

Asylums all over the US fell because of liberal activists. Asylum inmates were cared for and healthy. Many asylums were somewhat self sustaining - inmates maintained gardens and food animals such as sheep, goats and chickens which gave them a positive activity, a sense off self-worth, and offset the cost of operations.

I think is was a case in Florida that did it.

376 Drinking alcohol at a young age certainly has no ill effects....

THC simply brings out more of who you are. The other night I ingested about 45 mg of cannabis sativa (30 in a capsule and 15 sublingual). I spent the next several hours playing keyboards along to different arrangements of the Celtic tune "O Son do Ar" (to which I wrote lyrics years ago while stoned), working on a meet confer letter in a discovery dispute (re-reading it today at the office, it was pretty good though needed some minor editing), and then wrapping up with a play-along to a raucous version of the old Northumbrian tune "The Collier's Daughter". I would do that sober, but it's just so much more intense when stoned, like turning up the color saturation button on TVs back in the day.

Even when I did suffer from the commonly-induced paranoia (which my brain has adapted to), I would hear "voices" which I would trace to wind blowing through a pipe or some natural sound. I was fascinated how my brain tried to make sense of it. This is exemplified by when I would watch the foreign language channel while high -- my brain would try to turn Chinese into some kind of English, no matter how nonsensical. However, Japanese, which I was studying, it left alone. Same with German. In fact, listening to German when I'm stoned, I have an intuitive feel for what I'm hearing even though I can't tell you word-for-word what I heard.

"The growth of the internet will slow drastically, as the flaw in Metcalfe's Law -- ... -- becomes apparent: Most people have nothing to say to each other! By 2005 or so, it will become clear that the internet's impact on the economy has been no greater than the fax machine's."

Now, he's started to get worried about deficits and debt. And he doesn't like Trump's infrastructure stuff either. It's tax cuts for the rich and killing all the wonderful programs for the poor, like Obamacare.

Remember on election night when it became clear Trump would win, how the market threw a little hissy fit and shit the bed, Dow futures down nearly 1000 points. Krugs said the market would likely never recover from Trump's election. Within 24 hours, it was not only recovered, but one might say was going into "irrational exuberance" mode, as Greenspan famously said. And I am worried about that as we close in on Dow 20K.

WIth Brexit, the market hissy fit lasted about 5 days. With Trump, it lasted 24 hours. And with the Italeave vote, it lasted about 8 hours or so.

I know that professional translators, can both *hear* words being said and *speak* (in a different language no less) at the same time. Call me crazy but IMHO that's got to be a tough skill to learn, I would think a person would almost have to figure out how to rewire their brain a little bit.

I have a very close friend who is a simultaneous interpreter.
They start their training by "translating" in one language. That is, they learn to listen to speeches in their native language and (almost) simultaneously paraphrase in the same language. This takes months of practice.

Then they move on to hearing the foreign language and speaking the native one. If they are genuinely bilingual, they can also learn to go the opposite direction.

The exercises they do are pretty fascinating.

458 Dunno if still true, but the Aga Khan Foundation used to be a very interesting development outfit. Staffed (minimally) by retired British diplomats and other savvy experienced sorts. Had very few projects they would undertake. Would budget them for long periods. No b.s. tolerance.

Top shelf, in every way. Most NGOs I encountered had integrity and good motivation and there was usually lots of competence and responsibility. But the AKF was in a different class.

One had the feeling that every dollar one put into an AKF project was money well spent, or as well spent as any such money can be on projects of that sort.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. This morning, the in-town cat did not run to greet us at the door as he usually does. Turns out he had somehow slipped into the bathroom and was stuck in there overnight. (No soft places to sleep but at least he was warm.)

Tonight, as we were preparing to leave for home, we went to clean the catbox as usual, and found it hadn't been used. Oh, yeah: Because he wasn't loose all night.

So, went to check the bathroom and found... paw prints on a toilet seat and poop in the pot! Really, cat?

I'm glad you have started your life again and wish you the best. But I must ask why six months to get an ID? Did you not know the process?

I knew the process. But I had no money, no phone, no internet at the time. You need a birth certificate. To get that I had to have a credit/debit card and a place to mail it to. Proof of residency. I had to get admitted to a homeless shelter to get that, still fighting the bed bugs that invested everything there even though I've gone through 4 different states since. A social Security card. I had mine stolen with my wallet. I had to walk everywhere, no money for a bus. There are some other documents you can present such as utility bills, bank statements. But I had none of those things. It took People lending me there internet capable devices, paying for the fees and such. When you're homeless with no ID you spend 10-12 hours trying to collect recyclables to maybe make $10 a day on a good day. Some days you'd get to the recycling center and they close early or never opened at all. You just had to leave what you collected because you had no where to put them. I ate out of trash some days. I knew what had to be done but had no way of doing it. I'm now back to making a three figure income. But I lost everything and have seen how people treat you less than human. How dogs are treated better than humans.

514 92 64 At this time last year, I was homeless. I also had no ID, my wallet was stolen and I had lost everything else. Without ID you can not travel (I lived in Hawaii at the time). You can not get assistance or a job. It took me over six months to finally get an ID and then get my life started again.

I haven't smoked weed since my 20s. I'm 54. I was 53 when I was homeless. No, I did not suffer from any mental illness prior to becoming homeless. You might suggest I had some mental problems while being homeless but you try having no where to sleep. Being told to move on when you do find some place or being ripped off while you're sleeping. You try getting 2 to 4 hours MAYBE a night for months on end. So yeah, I'd get angry as hell and scream at the world because all I wanted was some sleep, a shower, some food. You're just like almost everyone I encountered while I was homeless. You assumed a bunch of crap about me rather than deal with the fact that bad things happen to good people.

I can well understand the difficulties in doing a reboot, where you don't have the address to get the ID that gives you access to the address.....but I'm interested in two particular points -- how did you spiral into this? And, did you contact churches? [Including, BTW, the Salvation Army -- which is actually a church dedicated to the proposition that you save souls by going to places souls are in danger.]

517 93 82. In most places, you need a verifiable physical address to get ID. That, in turn, requires income for rent, utilities, etc., to demonstrate that you reside there. It's a chicken and egg problem.
Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at December 20, 2016 10:28 PM (FUMmy)

EXACTLY. For me to get proof of residency I had to get someone to certify that I was homeless, then wait my turn to get into a disgusting bed bug infested homeless shelter. I had to stay there for two months before they would write the letter stating I lived there. Only then could I get an ID. (By that time I had the other stuff I needed). But I'm still fighting the damned bed bugs to this day after moving to 4 different states. I think the only way I shall be rid of them is to burn the last few things I own including my clothing.

A VERY bad consulting gig. They kept cheating me out of my hours. My roommate kicked me out and I had nowhere to go. I spent most of the last of my money on a hostel. Then I was out in the street. My "friends" never offered to put me up on a couch or even shower. I found a friend that stored what few things I had left for a while, but other than that all I had was what I could carry with me. All of my other "friends" gave me nothing except the occasional meal at a restaurant or slipping me 10 or 20 bucks. Some upon seeing me just turned around and walked the other way. One night I was exhausted and just collapsed into sleep before finding a somewhat safe place. I woke up maybe 45 minutes later to find someone had cut my back pant pocket down the middle and stolen my wallet while I was asleep.

I never asked for money. I never put up a sign. No of that shit. And the homeless people I made friends with never did that either. We looked down on them. We did what we could to survive as much as we could on our own. If someone offered us money or food or other necessities we were thankful. But we never begged.

Thank you. This time last year I was sleeping under an outdoor stairwell getting maybe 4 hours sleep a night at best. I had been able to get a TracFone but not many minutes on it at that point. But it's main purpose at that point was the alarm clock to wake me before sunrise so I could leave before I was noticed. I could not go there before midnight to sleep for fear of people seeing me and I had to wake up before people would see me. Occasionally someone would happen upon me but it usually other homeless people and once they got a sense of me they'd go on their way. (I had nothing they could take in other words).

If you've still got any means of proving it, or at least convincing a jury, you should have an easy win. You might even be able to make it a class action, if they've done it to other people, and help put a stop to them doing it to anyone else.

538 The funny thing is, when I was at the shelter they had a mandatory class on finances and also for job searching. I told them my plan of using various web sites and LinkedIn and how soon I expected to get a job, how much it would pay. How a face to face interview wasn't needed or a paper application for or resume. They looked at me like I was crazy. Well, a little over two weeks after getting back to the mainland I had a new job. No face to face interview (not even a Skype). No physical resume, only a Word document via email. My relocation and first month's hotel rent paid for. Three figure income plus per diem. Been here since April and they love me even though I've had to take a TON of time off do to health issues. I still get more done in one day than all the other consultants or employees get done in a week. Today they pulled me into two high profile meetings to let me observe and get my feedback.
We had solved all of the biggest issues (there were quite a few) by the end of the day. On one project they had number off in the thousands for just one month. We got it down to just over $600. Ok, cool. We can figure out the minor tweaks over the next few days but we more than cleared the 80/20 rule. These projects were stuck. Now they can show progress after just two meetings in the same day. Mind you, this was first exposure to these projects today. ;P

I know what you're saying, but after everything I just want to move on. The thing is I really miss the life I had in Hawaii and the friends I thought I had there. Nothing will ever bring that back. Also, I'll never be able to see people the same way again. I'll never be able to see myself the same way again. I don't know, it robbed me of ever being happy or having hope again. Even though I have a hotel room with a fridge, microwave, bed, stove, shower. Everything I would have loved when I was homeless. I'm still in a sense homeless. I have almost no possessions any more. "I believe you might be manifesting your fears, Lena. Let's try an experiment. Picture yourself thin: what are you doing? What is thin Lena doing?"

"Thin Lena is smearing her poop over pictures of all the people who called her fat. Icky bad people, and I smear them with my poop, and it makes me feel better. Thin Lena poop."

"Does 'Thin Lena' have any... happier thoughts?"

"No, Dr. Phil. Thin Lena is filled with Hate. Deep creamy Hate. They all thought it was funny when I was Fat Lena, but Thin Lena now wants them all to pay. Thin Lena wants People To Die. Thin Lena wants to drink their blood and desecrate their sexual organs and then dance like no one is watching."

"You know, Lena, there may be more here than we can address in a single episode..."

"It's because I'm fat, right? A skinny hour isn't big enough for the Fat Girl..."

"Perhaps we can have you back for another episode, Lena..."

"Did you know I put pebbles in my baby sister's vagina when I was little? Do you think that might have caused me to be fat? Am I fat because I put pebbles in my baby sister's vagina?"

"Lena..."

Lech is right, but what motivated the Polish workers to organize the Solidarity movement had nothing to do with demanding gradiose things like "freedom" or "soverignty" from the USSR.

I spent some time Poland and spoke with some guys who lived through it. What sparked it off was more about price and cost of living increases and scarcity of needed products with no wage increases. Work more for less. That was the straw that broke the camels back. The state responded by shooting demonstators which accelerated the movment. The state than began ceasing food deliveries and cutting power to those cities that supported the movment. Starving them out as it were. It was a standoff and the state was left with asking for intervention and full scale violence just like others did in Berlin in 53', Budapest in 56' and Prague in 68'. The Polish communist state blinked. That was the beginning of the end.

Hey Skip,
You in CST? I woke up about the same time. Have a day off tomorrow so am staying up for a bit, may or may not be drinking another glass of wine.

The nasty cold has abated here in N IL, we got up to 28 today, after a dip to -16 which really sucked.

Be well. Christmas is coming!

554 Sister trained her Maine Coon to use the toilet instead of the litter box. Process is to get a cover that fits under the seat and salt it with cat litter. Cut a small hole after it starts to use it regular and slowly make it larger over time. Eventually you will be able to ditch the cover and cat will squat on the seat.

During training, be sure to mention it to company that might try to use the bathroom.

Use of the smaller lot sizes around here depend on water access. We get a little more rain than western Kansas, so there are a lot of little niches for different types of crops. Before the Corps of Engineers drowned the Blue River valley, the area was known for popcorn.
