Since we have opened up the ONT with a Christmas movie theme/National Day. Let's find out what your state's favorite Christmas movie is.

Here, Moore doesn’t mince words: “They are the loser states. They are all progressive. High tax rates. High welfare benefits. Heavy regulation. Environmental extremism. Super minimum wages. Most outlaw energy drilling. The whole left-wing playbook is on display in the Hillary states. And people are leaving in droves.”

My brother and I had the same problem when we went to Angola in 2005. There were no ATMs you could use, unless you hand an account with an Agolan bank. Nobody took credit cards, either, with one exception: Our uncle told us that the highest-end hotel in Luanda would accept charge cards, but they had to swipe them the old mechanical way, and then the slips had to be sent on the next flight out to London to finish the processing. It was because of the level of corruption there that the global banking networks were not in place there.
Fortunately, my brother brought enough cash with him to tide us over until our uncle showed up.

That was my thought as well. Texas A&M has a large firefighter training facility with all sorts of houses and buildings that can be burned as often as needed. Some parts are consumed with each burn and they just rebuild those parts with plywood between burns.

One of the first Christmases that I have more or less pretty vivid memories of. I got my Technics SL-B200 turntable that year, I was obsessed with a girl in my video occupations class who hated my guts, and my relationship with my constantly-more-emotionally-distant father was deteriorating *badly.* (Of course the whole family found out the following summer, he was cheating on my mom.)
But I got through it. My first two LPs were Abba: The Singles: The First 10 Years (2-LP set), and the then-new Genesis album, simply titled Genesis. And with my Christmas money, I bought a copy of the J. Geils Band's Freeze Frame LP. I listened to all three of them obsessively to try and get through everything that was going on.

That's actually an unusual step for the Embassy-in most places the consulate will allow your family to wire a small amount to the embassy to tide you over so that you can leave asap. The problem is the embassy becoming a banking institution for so many people, and it's really not staffed for that. That also creates the problem of accountability for all of that money, and cripes, with the consulates I've worked at, no freaking way would I want that responsibility.
American Express used to serve that purpose, so many years ago. Banking, wire transfer, receiving mail and phone calls...gosh, that really shows my age, doesn't it?

I own stocks, through one of those online deals where you spend x number of dollars each month on a stock. $25 on UPS, $15 on Samsung, whatever...
Somewhere along the way...I have one stock that I am WAY up on...and 6 stocks that I am WAY down on. Everytime I check the forecasts for those stocks, they say Buy or Hold, so I hold...but they don't seem to go up. Or some go up, but I am not making my money back.
When I say I'm down...it's like 70-85% down. I don't know what I did wrong or how to right the ship at this point.

I mostly deal with options and futures. I always have a one-third out exit strategy and a full out exit strategy. The one-third exit is usually the point where I lock in some gains. The full out exit is where I can make a good return.
I can adjust most positions if they go bad but I usually don't chase good money with bad and try to cut any losses. The same strategy holds for equities and funds (usually ETFs).
I also hedge long stock positions with various instruments, like protective puts, Trailing Stop Loss orders, or something a bit more complicated. I don't care about taking on a lot of risk in hopes of striking it big but I hate losing money.
There are lots of good books and other resources on making decent returns while minimizing risk.

My advice? Go ahead and dump the stocks that aren't performing, and talk to people you trust about where else to invest the money. As I've read, it's similar to poker; just like you can have two aces in hold'em and *still lose,* you can be holding stocks with great past performances and still lose money.
Stocks are instruments there to serve *you.* Don't fall in love.

Well, even if they themselves aren't the solution to my problem, I would hope they know how things work in the country they are in. That they would be knowledgeable about what my options are, even if they sent me someplace else to get what I needed. The guy's biggest problem was his lack of knowledge and he didn't do much while he was there to get that knowledge other than just asking people he ran into.

I invest in mutual funds. They provide diversity. I read up on mutual funds, the different types, made a short list, then went to Morningstar to pick out a couple to invest in.
Right now I have some inheritance money that I want to put into an index fund, but I'm holding off to see if the market dips. It's incredibly high right now, and I'd hate to buy high, then have it dive. The lawyer who handled my dad's estate said that he thinks the market might go down after the first of the year.

It has likely done reverse stock splits. You bought 20 shares for $25 each six times, then they reverse-splitted your 60 shares into one share trading at $35. Stock price -- $25->$35, up! Investment -- $150->$35, down.

I know that Country Boy has probably gone to bed, but I completely understand where he's coming from.
I had a disagreement with my best friend earlier in the year, and in trying to work it out, it simply became "I'm perfect and you're horrible for saying I'm not perfect!" Moral of the story: if someone is upset with you and can't find a way to talk to you about it, don't push it. You won't like what you hear. My former friend did not.
About a month and a half ago, a very close friend of mine, who is very liberal, went off on me and want to have a huge fight on two occasions. I wouldn't do it, and now, after being very close for a few years, has now cut me out of his life. This should break my heart, but it hasn't. He was very high maintenance. So.. for the first time in a long time, I don't have anyone I'd call a close friend.
It's been a strange year here. Glad to see it go.

One stepdaughter has signed the petition to beg the electors to not vote for Trump. The stepson posted on FB "Remember that thing that we all used to joke about that would be so funny? Well, now it's happened and no one's laughing." Clearly he hasn't been on AoS.
And my SIL had deactivated her Facebook account after having it for years.
So many casualties, and Trump hasn't even been sworn in yet.

I would be unsurprised at a drop of 60%. Or none at all. The traditional measures of value have been largely supplanted by government edicts, and little of our economy is unaffected. The very notion of "price discovery" is a dead letter in large sectors of our economy.

Except the city hasn't made anywhere near that and filed reports indicating the shortfall. Which made everyone who had such a plan realize how risky it was and start pulling money out. This exposed the commingled pension plan to look troubled, as well -- and people close to retirement started actually quitting to get lump-sum payouts before the whole house-of-cards collapsed. As of now, payouts from the savings plan are halted.

Dunno. I've seen it once, and didn't really get it, but Mrs. Splunge has watched it repeatedly and thinks it's great. She points out that the Coen Brothers (my favorites) were involved, and you have to watch it a couple of times to get what's happening. At this point, I have grudgingly admitted that both Raising Arizona and Miller's Crossing took a couple of viewings before I could see the genius, and, before Christmas arrives, I am committed to giving Bad Santa another try.

My son just returned from spending the last six months with his mom.
At first, I liked having the time to myself. As the weeks turned into months, I realized how much I missed the kid. I came to hate going home.
He's back now, at least until he finds work. He told me he thinks he's ready to get out on his own (he's 20), and once he saves enough money, he'll find him an apartment somewhere in town.
So sometime in the near future, I'll be coming home to an empty apartment again. I already know I won't like it.

I agree. Obama and the Feds have kept the stock market artificially high over the past 8 years through quantitative easing and monetizing the debt, which is a fancy way of saying they printed money and gave it to their Wall Street cronies.
The key thing is for investors to be prepared for whatever happens. We need to be ready to take advantage of gains and ready to lock in profits should the market drop.

I must be weird because I have lived alone since I got out of the USAF (almost 20 years now). I lived with my sister for a couple of years but since 2001, I've had my own place and I've lived alone. Everything's a house of cards. The best result from lawsuits comes from the subsequent bankruptcy that liquidates the debt -- and there is a ton of debt. Second place is a tie between the George C. Scott "A Christmas Carol" and the Christmas "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" from Hallmark. Scott because his Scrooge is not some sniveling, whining coward. The S, S, D movie because it is amusing, touching, and truly reflects the spirit of Christmas.
Honorable mention to "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (which probably couldn't be made these days) if only because it gave us Vince Guaraldi's associated album. One of my favorites.

Tickled Pink, you can sell the losers and buy a Kitchenaid Mixer;
you can trade from those stocks into something you think will go better;
you can trade into a mutual fund or index funds - Dad always likes the Vanguard ones since he thinks they are a good value;
you can hold them and review the investors' relation page to see if the assets and value of the company seems to suggest there is real value in those stocks, or if they were overvalued and are at the more correct value now.
As the value has gone to 1/4 of what you paid, you have time to review the value in each company and see if you think there is something there. Some companies go down in value because they are stuck and stupid, sometimes they are investing in new production that is risky. Sometimes they make plaid velcro shoes with electric lights and are no longer trendy.

The Wall Street cronies are, at least, easy to find. The reality is that most of the money went into pure institutional graft. As an example, let's say you had a deal where you were putting up fences. You have a guy who digs a hole and you call out for an inspection. Used to be, you'd have one guy come out, look at the plans, look at the hole, and say, "the plan says 18 inches and it looks like it's only a 14-inch deep hole."
Nowadays, you call for inspection and six guys show up. The first guy says, "the plan says 18 inches and it looks like it's only a 14-inch deep hole." The second guy says, "I'm from Fish and Wildlife and I'm pleased to note that no gophers were harmed by making this hole." Third guy says, "County rules insist that project teams of more than one person need a supervisor on-site." Fourth guy says, "I'm from HR to ensure that none of these guys is sexually molested by the other two." Fifth guy says, "I'm here to provide security for the workplace." And the sixth guy says, "Internal audit."
We've gone from a society where one guy digging the hole has one guy inspecting it and actually doing something to improve the hole......to one where one guy is digging the hole, one is doing something to improve it, and four guys are bitching about it. Employment's gone up, they say; we have a better ratio of professionals to laborers, they say; payrolls are up, they say.
When I went to the University of California, it was a world-class institution known for its scholarship that had a ratio of faculty to administrators between 3:1 and 4:1. That ratio is now less than one -- there are more administrators than faculty. And it's known for snowflakes and leftist politics more than it's known for scholarship.

The math isn't in your favor. You lost approximately 72% of the value on those stocks but, to recoup your losses, they are going to have to increase in value over 200%.
I have a feeling a lot of your money was eaten up by fees.
You may consider looking for an investment club in your area. They often have a lot of smart people who are good at researching stocks and ETFs and can help you find a low-cost investment service. They'll also help you to set up ways to preserve your gains, like the stop loss method that I linked to.
I'm sorry you lost money. It wasn't a lot of money but it still stinks. Look at it as an education -- losing money isn't pleasant and you can learn how to lock in your gains and limit your losses in the future.

For this assignment, you pull the cat aside into a small place that you have prepared -- like a bathroom or laundry room -- shut the door, pull the crate and gloves from where they have been hidden, put on the gloves, grab the cat and stuff her in the crate and close the door, take off the gloves, and treat any wounds you may have suffered in the process.

The only way I've found that works is to grab her while she's eating. Which is cruel as hell, but it gets the job done.

Late to the party, but firemen can and do put fires out. If they get there in time. November 8, election night, there was a range fire less than half a mile south of my place. Fire department attended, put out spot fires, and called in a local farmer with a big-ass tractor, who plowed up a fire break that stopped the spread of the fire. I have pictures. Looked pretty scary when I first saw it.

yeah, they kicked in the front AND back doors to get to the other side of the fire, besides hacking out the gate and it's lock, but since both the garage and the house were about to catch, partly melted shingles on the garage and a cracked outer window on the breakfast nook window, it was a fair trade...

It is without a doubt "A christmas Story" The ONLY reason "It's a wonderful life" might win, is based on broadcast frequency.
HOWEVER! A Christmas story is not only a good christmas movie, it takes place in my home town. At Christmas time, it's virtually impossible to walk down the street and not hear a family or some couple or some kids with the entertatinment system loud, watching the adventures of Ralphie and his friends.
And I've personally met Randy. He's a dick. But a great character in a great movie.

true story: Jim Sub Sunk mentioned in an ONT that he had a NIB Mossberg that he needed to sell to pay for something.
i took the offer to Resident Evil, and the deal was done throught the usual set of FFls on both ends and everyone was happy, as product was as described and price was met.
then herself took it to shoot sporting clays, shortly after it came home.
about the 3rd station, when she pulled the trigger on the first bird, both barrels went off.
much discussion amongst the party, reloaded, reshot the station, no problemo.
a few stations later, same thing, more discussion, then reshoot.
the third time it happened, a few moar stations down the trail, RE says "FTS, IQ" calls it a day and starts for home.
she calls me, i meet her at the local taco shop, transfer iffy gun and head straight to FFL, while she goes home to eat prior to taking NASIDS for the blunt force trauma to her shoulder. (severe bruising, etc)
they contact Mossberg, who sends them shipping tag, who then gets the gun, apparently replaces all parts inside the receiver, then proceeds to shoot, from the debris in the barrel when we got it back, a case of ammo to ensure it was no longer full auto.
great gun otherwise, and it's now just a funny story, and Jim's a great guy, from my interactions.

last seen, he was talking with them, as his family snuck out the side, so apparently he was somewhat appreciative of my intercession, but he could be lying in the gutter on fire and i would not piss on him in the future.

Set up the crate in the living room, open the door, put a towel in the crate, make the crate inviting. Cats like enclosed spaces.
Leave it there for a week before you need to actually put the cat in the crate.
That way when the cat needs to go in the crate it's not like a whole new kind of trauma.
