Sunday Overnight Open Thread (12/18/16)

Elf-movie-Wallpaper.jpg

Although we are towards the end of the day. It isn't too late to celebrate answer the telephone like Buddy The Elf.

Since we have opened up the ONT with a Christmas movie theme/National Day. Let's find out what your state's favorite Christmas movie is.

internet.jpg

The internet and it's humble beginnings.

Back in the 1970s, David Newbury's dad, Paul, worked at Carnegie Mellon, one of the leading computer science schools in the country. This was in the very early years of the Internet, back when it was the secret and very small ARPANET, which had started in the late '60s, with just four locations. By 1973, it had expanded to a small handful of government labs, research universities, and private companies—but still so few that the entire network could be mapped on a single sheet of paper.

Web sites that have gone POOF and disappeared.

Then, the website disappeared. It had included everything from Vaughn’s work to copies of forgotten photos and court transcripts, all made public with the intention of showing a community still reeling from Columbine how events like this impacted them. Then it was gone. Vaughn says that one day, his work just vanished from the web. Fortunately, he had a back-up. But the question of what caused the website to disappear in the first place remains a mystery, and one can’t help but wonder: how many other websites have simply vanished over time?

You don't want the government in your bedroom? Fine. Tell the government to get out of the apple labeling biz.

In The Cider House Rules, John Irving's 1985 novel, the guidelines to which the book's title refers are a set of rules posted in the Maine cider house where much of the book's action takes place.

Please don't go up on the roof if you've been drinking—especially at night," reads one such rule. These rules, posted by management to govern the behavior of the workers in the cider house, are mostly ignored by those same workers, who live by their own set of rules.

If workers in a fictional cider house are subject to an array of sometimes-sensible rules they often ignore, real-world cider-house management is stuck having to comply with oftentimes-idiotic rules for which compliance is not optional.

I'm talking about government rules, of course. And these rules, you may be surprised to learn, can be complicated.

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax & Trade Bureau (TTB), is housed within the Treasury Department and is charged with drafting and enforcing rules for hard cider. A 2016 TTB presentation, Cider Industry Federal Compliance Training, makes light of its complicated rules a handful of times, as here:

"How Does TTB Regulate Cider... Products?

...it's VERY complicated!"

It is! It is! Maddeningly so.

California

In a recent piece in the Washington Times, economist Stephen Moore presents an amazing statistic: “Of the 10 blue states that Hillary Clinton won by the largest percentage margins — California, Massachusetts, Vermont, Hawaii, Maryland, New York, Illinois, Rhode Island, New Jersey and Connecticut — every single one of them lost domestic migration (excluding immigration) over the last 10 years (2004-14)

So what are the characteristics of those Hillary-supporting states that are bleeding productive citizens? Here, Moore doesn’t mince words: “They are the loser states. They are all progressive. High tax rates. High welfare benefits. Heavy regulation. Environmental extremism. Super minimum wages. Most outlaw energy drilling. The whole left-wing playbook is on display in the Hillary states. And people are leaving in droves.”

Tonight's Musical Interlude

The thing about playing Christmas songs/carols, everyone has their favorite or something they dislike. Everyone is a judge. Long-Lost Christmas Drinking Song Discovered at Oxford. OK Morons, is it a good song?

Money talks and bullshit walks, especially if you're a gringo. Then you better have a boatload of money.

See, if your citizenship is American, you basically can’t get money in Cuba. I learned this the hard way over five nearly penniless days there. American Airlines and JetBlue were the first with regularly scheduled flights to the Communist nation, as the Wall Street Journal reported. More Americans will head there soon and undoubtedly more will make the same mistake I made. The good news: you can get by. The bad news: I’m not sure what you can do if you find you can’t [Update: There is a way to do it, which we have appended to the end].

Once an American is in Cuba, she cannot get her hands on any more cash than she has on her upon arrival, at least not without begging, borrowing, stealing or a foreign bank account. American credit cards work in very few places. ATMs don’t accept American debit cards. The country still runs on cash.

Fishermen's Check List

The ONT wonders if a pint of olive oil will knock down the 3'-4' rollers on Canadian Shield Lakes?

Are you gifted when it comes to science? Did it come naturally? Or did you get it with help from a teacher? High school students, soapy hands and a fiery propane bubble. Now that teacher deserves an award for making science class fun and exciting.

Right or wrong, marijuana is illegal in Montreal. What happens next is tonight's Genius Award Winner.

32 On cash in Cuba:

My brother and I had the same problem when we went to Angola in 2005. There were no ATMs you could use, unless you hand an account with an Agolan bank. Nobody took credit cards, either, with one exception: Our uncle told us that the highest-end hotel in Luanda would accept charge cards, but they had to swipe them the old mechanical way, and then the slips had to be sent on the next flight out to London to finish the processing. It was because of the level of corruption there that the global banking networks were not in place there.

Fortunately, my brother brought enough cash with him to tide us over until our uncle showed up.

95 I suspect that the Dems' very last hope is that the electoral college fails to give Trump the necessary votes, and in the House the Dems can convince enough Repubs to instead give the White House to a more 'moderate' squish like Jeb.
If it happened that way, the Dems would get someone more to their liking than Trump and it would also mean the end of the Republican party.

195 logprof, Christmas 1983?

One of the first Christmases that I have more or less pretty vivid memories of. I got my Technics SL-B200 turntable that year, I was obsessed with a girl in my video occupations class who hated my guts, and my relationship with my constantly-more-emotionally-distant father was deteriorating *badly.* (Of course the whole family found out the following summer, he was cheating on my mom.)

But I got through it. My first two LPs were Abba: The Singles: The First 10 Years (2-LP set), and the then-new Genesis album, simply titled Genesis. And with my Christmas money, I bought a copy of the J. Geils Band's Freeze Frame LP. I listened to all three of them obsessively to try and get through everything that was going on.

196 Looks like "Elf" is the most popular Christmas movie in Pennsylvania. I've never seen it.

My favorites are the Alastair Sim version of "A Christmas Carol", "It's A Wonderful Life", and "A Christmas Story".

As for TV, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" are still the gold standards after 50 years. They will never be topped.

That's actually an unusual step for the Embassy-in most places the consulate will allow your family to wire a small amount to the embassy to tide you over so that you can leave asap. The problem is the embassy becoming a banking institution for so many people, and it's really not staffed for that. That also creates the problem of accountability for all of that money, and cripes, with the consulates I've worked at, no freaking way would I want that responsibility.

American Express used to serve that purpose, so many years ago. Banking, wire transfer, receiving mail and phone calls...gosh, that really shows my age, doesn't it?

Like Mike Hammer said, buy low, sell high. Also, don't fall in love with your stock picks. Determine the percentage loss you can handle for each position and have an exit strategy

I mostly deal with options and futures. I always have a one-third out exit strategy and a full out exit strategy. The one-third exit is usually the point where I lock in some gains. The full out exit is where I can make a good return.

I can adjust most positions if they go bad but I usually don't chase good money with bad and try to cut any losses. The same strategy holds for equities and funds (usually ETFs).

I also hedge long stock positions with various instruments, like protective puts, Trailing Stop Loss orders, or something a bit more complicated. I don't care about taking on a lot of risk in hopes of striking it big but I hate losing money.

There are lots of good books and other resources on making decent returns while minimizing risk.

My advice? Go ahead and dump the stocks that aren't performing, and talk to people you trust about where else to invest the money. Stocks are instruments there to serve *you.* Don't fall in love.

295 It's been a strange year, and the past month or so just gets stranger. It's getting harder and harder to figure out who you can trust. That's two now this month who have betrayed my trust.
--

I know that Country Boy has probably gone to bed, but I completely understand where he's coming from.

I had a disagreement with my best friend earlier in the year, and in trying to work it out, it simply became "I'm perfect and you're horrible for saying I'm not perfect!" Moral of the story: if someone is upset with you and can't find a way to talk to you about it, don't push it. You won't like what you hear. My former friend did not.

About a month and a half ago, a very close friend of mine, who is very liberal, went off on me and want to have a huge fight on two occasions. I wouldn't do it, and now, after being very close for a few years, has now cut me out of his life. This should break my heart, but it hasn't. He was very high maintenance. So.. for the first time in a long time, I don't have anyone I'd call a close friend.

It's been a strange year here. Glad to see it go.

330 I was surprised to see Die Hard isn't the favorite Christmas movie of a single state.

You know what I think? Whoever put together that map didn't consider Die Hard a "real" Christmas movie, and so refused to count it in the results.

This makes them wrong.

I'm glad that Bad Santa got on the map somewhere, at least. And my state favors Scrooged, which I did enjoy. Bill Murray, Karen Allen, nipples, a zillionaire thumbing his nose at federal regulations... what more do you need, really? Quite the feel-good movie, I must say.

With just one month left until President Obama’s steps down, renovations to his new home are underway with plans to upgrade the security system and transform part of the garage into a home office.

Barack and Michelle Obama are moving into a $5.3million home in Kalorama, one of Washington DC’s most elegant neighborhoods, so 15-year-old Sasha Obama can finish out high school at the Sidwell Friends School.

Construction permits obtained by TMZ show the home will also be outfitted with an upgraded electrical system as well as a cat walk over one staircase.

In Dallas, they had this deal where city workers could put things into a savings plan on top of their city pensions, and the city would guarantee an 8% annual yield. Except the city hasn't made anywhere near that and filed reports indicating the shortfall. Which made everyone who had such a plan realize how risky it was and start pulling money out. This exposed the commingled pension plan to look troubled, as well -- and people close to retirement started actually quitting to get lump-sum payouts before the whole house-of-cards collapsed. As of now, payouts from the savings plan are halted.

She points out that the Coen Brothers (my favorites) were involved, and you have to watch it a couple of times to get what's happening. My son just returned from spending the last six months with his mom.

At first, I liked having the time to myself. As the weeks turned into months, I realized how much I missed the kid. I came to hate going home.

He's back now, at least until he finds work. He told me he thinks he's ready to get out on his own (he's 20), and once he saves enough money, he'll find him an apartment somewhere in town.

So sometime in the near future, I'll be coming home to an empty apartment again. I already know I won't like it.

I agree. Obama and the Feds have kept the stock market artificially high over the past 8 years through quantitative easing and monetizing the debt, which is a fancy way of saying they printed money and gave it to their Wall Street cronies.

The key thing is for investors to be prepared for whatever happens. We need to be ready to take advantage of gains and ready to lock in profits should the market drop.

386 359 "In Dallas, they had this deal where city workers
could put things into a savings plan on top of their city pensions, and
the city would guarantee an 8% annual yield. Except the city hasn't made
anywhere near that and filed reports indicating the shortfall. Which
made everyone who had such a plan realize how risky it was and start
pulling money out. This exposed the commingled pension plan to look
troubled, as well -- and people close to retirement started actually
quitting to get lump-sum payouts before the whole house-of-cards
collapsed. As of now, payouts from the savings plan are halted.

Posted by: cthulhu"

Yeah, I read about that. They probably had an "Oh Shit! Someone's figured out this is a house of cards!" moment. Sounds like it's lawsuit time for those that are trying to get the money out.

Posted by: AshevilleRobert at December 18, 2016 11:50 PM (w+Jhj)

Everything's a house of cards. The best result from lawsuits comes from the subsequent bankruptcy that liquidates the debt -- and there is a ton of debt. The national debt got doubled by Obama, student loans to finance gender studies degrees for pajamaboys have been jammed to over $1T, off-balance-sheet BS is everywhere.

I have one guaranteed delusional liberal friend and a few "reasonable" ones. The worst doesn't wish Trump dead (at least not on FB), but she's pumping away madly for the electors "to pull the emergency brake" on Trump. She's also under the illusion that 21 significant electors are already onboard.

Second place is a tie between the George C. Scott "A Christmas Carol" and the Christmas "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" from Hallmark. Scott because his Scrooge is not some sniveling, whining coward. The S, S, D movie because it is amusing, touching, and truly reflects the spirit of Christmas.

Honorable mention to "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (which probably couldn't be made these days) if only because it gave us Vince Guaraldi's associated album. One of my favorites.

Tickled Pink, you can sell the losers and buy a Kitchenaid Mixer;
you can trade from those stocks into something you think will go better;
you can trade into a mutual fund or index funds - Dad always likes the Vanguard ones since he thinks they are a good value;
you can hold them and review the investors' relation page to see if the assets and value of the company seems to suggest there is real value in those stocks, or if they were overvalued and are at the more correct value now.

As the value has gone to 1/4 of what you paid, you have time to review the value in each company and see if you think there is something there. Some companies go down in value because they are stuck and stupid, sometimes they are investing in new production that is risky. Sometimes they make plaid velcro shoes with electric lights and are no longer trendy.

428 367 302 254 I would be unsurprised at a drop of 60%. Or none at all. The traditional measures of value have been largely supplanted by government edicts, and little of our economy is unaffected. The very notion of "price discovery" is a dead letter in large sectors of our economy.
Posted by: cthulhu at December 18, 2016 11:35 PM (EzgxV)

Posted by: Michael the TEXIT at December 18, 2016 11:52 PM (nvMvs)

The Wall Street cronies are, at least, easy to find. The reality is that most of the money went into pure institutional graft. As an example, let's say you had a deal where you were putting up fences. You have a guy who digs a hole and you call out for an inspection. Used to be, you'd have one guy come out, look at the plans, look at the hole, and say, "the plan says 18 inches and it looks like it's only a 14-inch deep hole."

Nowadays, you call for inspection and six guys show up. The first guy says, "the plan says 18 inches and it looks like it's only a 14-inch deep hole." The second guy says, "I'm from Fish and Wildlife and I'm pleased to note that no gophers were harmed by making this hole." Third guy says, "County rules insist that project teams of more than one person need a supervisor on-site." Fourth guy says, "I'm from HR to ensure that none of these guys is sexually molested by the other two." Fifth guy says, "I'm here to provide security for the workplace." And the sixth guy says, "Internal audit."

We've gone from a society where one guy digging the hole has one guy inspecting it and actually doing something to improve the hole......to one where one guy is digging the hole, one is doing something to improve it, and four guys are bitching about it. Employment's gone up, they say; we have a better ratio of professionals to laborers, they say; payrolls are up, they say.

When I went to the University of California, it was a world-class institution known for its scholarship that had a ratio of faculty to administrators between 3:1 and 4:1. That ratio is now less than one -- there are more administrators than faculty. And it's known for snowflakes and leftist politics more than it's known for scholarship.

After annoying her by taking so long to look at the menu but refusing to let her go and come back, he orders a doughnut.

I know Ace (or Scott Adams, I forget which) likes to state none of us use reason to arrive at our conclusions. I think that's untrue...we don't rely solely on it, but some people ARE more rational than others. Lefties I know tend to use emotion to arrive at their conclusions a lot more often.

Then he says they are going to take her away, "for her own safety. When they say that, it means they are going to kill you". While the commies in our government take our rights away, it is always for our own safety. They just need to lead our country a little farther down their dark path.

That is what the left and some in the agencies are doing to citizens, telling us all how dangerous, crazy, etc. that Trump is. And now he is a Russian agent, but at the same time is going to start nuclear war, and lock up gays. They are DIPing us.

I understand. I've lost money, too, and have learned investing and, especially, the preservation of money the hard way.

The math isn't in your favor. You lost approximately 72% of the value on those stocks but, to recoup your losses, they are going to have to increase in value over 200%.

I have a feeling a lot of your money was eaten up by fees.

You may consider looking for an investment club in your area. They often have a lot of smart people who are good at researching stocks and ETFs and can help you find a low-cost investment service. They'll also help you to set up ways to preserve your gains, like the stop loss method that I linked to.

I'm sorry you lost money. It wasn't a lot of money but it still stinks. Look at it as an education -- losing money isn't pleasant and you can learn how to lock in your gains and limit your losses in the future.

Maryanne was confused why all her clothes were too long and proceeded to cut up all of Ginger's clothes -- Ginger was livid!

Most cats I know are going to object to being stuffed into a crate in the first place. For this assignment, you pull the cat aside into a small place that you have prepared -- like a bathroom or laundry room -- shut the door, pull the crate and gloves from where they have been hidden, put on the gloves, grab the cat and stuff her in the crate and close the door, take off the gloves, and treat any wounds you may have suffered in the process.

Late to the party, but firemen can and do put fires out. If they get there in time. November 8, election night, there was a range fire less than half a mile south of my place. Fire department attended, put out spot fires, and called in a local farmer with a big-ass tractor, who plowed up a fire break that stopped the spread of the fire. I have pictures. Looked pretty scary when I first saw it.

yeah, they kicked in the front AND back doors to get to the other side of the fire, besides hacking out the gate and it's lock, but since both the garage and the house were about to catch, partly melted shingles on the garage and a cracked outer window on the breakfast nook window, it was a fair trade...

true story: Jim Sub Sunk mentioned in an ONT that he had a NIB Mossberg that he needed to sell to pay for something.

i took the offer to Resident Evil, and the deal was done throught the usual set of FFls on both ends and everyone was happy, as product was as described and price was met.

then herself took it to shoot sporting clays, shortly after it came home.

about the 3rd station, when she pulled the trigger on the first bird, both barrels went off.

much discussion amongst the party, reloaded, reshot the station, no problemo.

a few stations later, same thing, more discussion, then reshoot.

the third time it happened, a few moar stations down the trail, RE says "FTS, IQ" calls it a day and starts for home.

she calls me, i meet her at the local taco shop, transfer iffy gun and head straight to FFL, while she goes home to eat prior to taking NASIDS for the blunt force trauma to her shoulder. (severe bruising, etc)

they contact Mossberg, who sends them shipping tag, who then gets the gun, apparently replaces all parts inside the receiver, then proceeds to shoot, from the debris in the barrel when we got it back, a case of ammo to ensure it was no longer full auto.

great gun otherwise, and it's now just a funny story, and Jim's a great guy, from my interactions.

having been outside for a different reason, and vaguely knowing who he was, i approached him to tell him that there were paparazzi there in the parking lot, waiting for him (he was with his wife and kids). he tried to ignore me, bad move, apparently thinking i was a fan, but eventually i got his attention and relayed the info, explaining that, as a conservative, i figured everyone had a right to privacy and a personal life.

he was agog that there might be a conservative in the area, and said so. seeing he was an asshat, i simply told him that of course i was a conservative, because we couldn't all be ignorant idiots.

he was not pleased and i did not ask for an autograph.

last seen, he was talking with them, as his family snuck out the side, so apparently he was somewhat appreciative of my intercession, but he could be lying in the gutter on fire and i would not piss on him in the future.

576 You may want to try introducing the crate to the cat before the actual time that the crate is required.

Set up the crate in the living room, open the door, put a towel in the crate, make the crate inviting. Cats like enclosed spaces.

Leave it there for a week before you need to actually put the cat in the crate.

That way when the cat needs to go in the crate it's not like a whole new kind of trauma.

577 So this dingus goes to a foreign country, even a poor one, with $100 in cash and is surprised when her multi-day trip is a little constrained in the spending department? Jesus. Even in places as staggeringly cheap as Nicaragua I reckon on $50 a day, plus a 100% safety margin. So she should have taken at least $800, which is still chump change. In, for example, the UK, you should make sure you have access to $1000 per person per week in actual cash money and preferably $2000. 596 Starting 1 January I will be responsible for removing snow from Township roads. Wahoo. I want a mild winter. Data says the current solar cycle bottoms out in 2019.

Currently the outlying roads are dusted with snow over an thin ice base. The main roads are mostly clear.

Posted by: NaCly Dog at December 19, 2016 05:38 AM (u82oZ)

597 Around here, a lot of roads get that 5% saline wash. That seems to work better than traditional salting.

598 Big question: will Hillary or Jill demand a recount if Trump wins the electoral votes today?

Posted by: Colin at December 19, 2016 05:54 AM (ogUTd)

599 Tim in Illinois, it depends on the outside temperature. Other salts, like calcium chloride, may work better than NaCl.

I have yet to have my turn-over brief, so I will look for answers there and elsewhere.

Posted by: NaCly Dog at December 19, 2016 05:57 AM (u82oZ)

600 Colin, no recount. My prediction.

Hillary, on the rare occasions she is sober or contemplative, should know that Trump will do a better job as President. Based on the traditions of America, which she loathes.

It might just be that the stuff is cheaper than other salts too. You might not have noticed but this state is in sorry shape.

When the lights do finally go out here, I'm hoping to be one of the survivors.

Posted by: Tim in Illinois at December 19, 2016 06:01 AM (d76uN)

602 Tim in Illinois, good points.

NaCl is always cheaper than CaCl2.

Mark down which houses had Hillary 2016 lawn posters. When IL collapses, take their stuff.

603 Well, this is fun, but lots of preps today.

I may pop in for a bit later.

May every traffic light turn green as you approach.

605 Tim in Illinois, I wanted to add this.

In a litigious society, lawsuit avoidance is a cost saving measure. One wrongful death goes for $1 million dollars at trial, as a baseline.

If I am responsible, I want to use the money effectively. The chemical constraints (freezing point depression based on concentration of various salts) are known. I still need to look at the budget. I'm all for life-cycle maintenance costs and effectiveness. And I pay those taxes myself. So I have a hand in the game.

607 The fact that those 10 heavy blue States are bleeding citizens is not a thing for conservatives in red States to celebrate. The fact is most of those blue State citizens voted for that liberal crap that made their blue State a hell. And they continue to vote that way when they get where they are going. That is how they earned the name "locusts".

In defense the red States should enact residency laws that require ten years to earn the right to vote in their new home. Give them time to learn what it means to live in a red State.

609 Seeing more and more MSM news stories that point out some any view they don't like is "fake" news. Good example: WAPO had one yesterday about Hillary and her newfound love for walks in the woods and meeting the commoners. Writer helpfully pointed out that any suggestion that these random meetings are in any way stage managed or anything other the friendly, outdoorsy Hillary bumping into the locals while out for a stroll with her security detail surrounding her and securing the path was based on hateful fake news blogs.

Speaking as a born and bred Masshole and having watched New Hampshire turn from God's country into Massachusetts North, I heartily agree with Teh Vic's proposal.

Got a little work to do. See you on J.J.'s morning thread.

611 "locusts"

Don't think of them as locust. Think of them as returnees. They are returning to the land of big gubber'mintism that spawned them.

They are returning to the places where being taken care of cradle to grave was the responsibility of "masters".

Probably MeeMaw has Sundowners Syndrome.

Only she wakes up at 2 PM after an all day drunk the day before, thinks it's nighttime, and goes awandering.

We had a lot of co-workers at my old place of work that came from some of those Blue State hells. Had some interesting conversations on those long graveyard shifts in the control room. One night one of those blue State transplants complained about the lack of local programs in the schools and counties like they "used to have in their old home State". So I asked him; "how do you like the property taxes here as opposed to <blue State hell?>"

He shut up.
