Ace of Spades Pet Thread [Mis. Hum.]

above the fold.jpg

It's time to enjoy all things animals. Enjoy the animal news and the "kids" of the Moron Horde. Down. Stay. Good Moron.

Late last week a commenter had the following question. It was late in the thread. Can you Morons help him out?

71 Hey, I need some help. Scrappy, my not quite 2 year old pointer, is terrorizing Moose, my wife's 10 year old 12 pounder. It started out as rough housing, now she will kind of bark threateningly if Moose gets too close to Scrappy's bed or rawhide or whatever.. Moose is trying to avoid her, but that is not the answer. Scrappy was not socialized very well before I got her and she is kind of dominant and possessive.

Any ideas on having them get along better?
Posted by: F.N.G. at November 12, 2016 10:29 PM (kiSdp)

It is a dominance issue on Scrappy's part. Behavior that should not be allowed. There are several ways to address it. With a similar problem here in our zoo house we give the culprit a time out when he acts up. The ONT doesn't know where you are from or what your pocket book looks like. But, you may consider going to a dog training class with your pets. For example an 8 week class here runs right around $125. Worth every penny of it.

C'mon Horde, let's help Scrappy to be a good doggeh.

Animal News. A Little of This. A Little of That.

Meet The PetMorons

jager.jpg

Our first pet this week is a sharp looking cat. Let's here it's story from T-Bird.
"A younger brother of the late Rye (who was featured in a previous edition). Does not actually hunt, but he LOVES his spoonful of salmon in the morning.

t-bird"
Thanks for sharing.

We sure do have our share of Lurkers. C'mon in the water is fine!!!

"Hiya,

Long-time lurker, and so is my mom. Would be great if her pup, Minnie the Doberman, could make it to AoS pet thread. She's a sweet girl whose greatest passion in life is barking at the UPS man. She's great at opening any sort of door and terrible at catching squirrels. Terrified of babies. Total cuddly, loving sweetheart and great guard dog.

It would be a really awesome surprise for my mom if Minnie showed up on the thread.

If you do choose to post her, I'd like to stay anonymous and lurky, please.

Cheers!
A Lurking Lurker (almost) Librarian (whose name appears in the email address but is still attempting anonymity)"

gryn.jpg

This is Gryn. And her story. "Hello

This is our dog Gryn.
She is a mixed breed rescue. Her hobby is chasing squirrels.
Hope you can use her.

Lurker
Victoria"
Thank you for sharing with us Victoria. Gryn certainly does look happy.

Last but not least this week are these adorable creatures. This photo was sent in by Miley, the Duchess of the Deplorable Standard Rednecks. She has shared this story with us.

"Marie is (was) the black one, the momma, who passed away on June 29, 2013. She got her name from the sound she made. Her formal name was Mary, Queen of Cats. Harli is the calico, born 4/8/08 at 7:32 pm (in case anyone wants to run her natal chart). When she was born as Tim (aka Mr. Deplorable) and I looked on, I said, "OH! A harlequin kitteh!" and it just stuck. She was kitteh #2 in that litter."

Thank you for stopping by. We appreciate your visit. We are soliciting photos of your pets. When you send in your pet's photo please include your pet's name, your nic and a little story about him/her/it. You may send your photo(s) to petmorons at gmail dot com. We can't spell s_ccess without U.

If you have a funny video, interesting story or some other animal related information, you can submit to the same address.

Have a great weekend.

6 Greetings, all. My cat Leela had the honor of being the very fist pet featured on the AoS Pet Thread.

As most of you know, she crossed the Rainbow Bridge early Sunday morning, the 13th...just one day shy of the 16th anniversary of the day I adopted her.

Up until three or four days before she passed, she was doing well for her age. On balance, she was a good cat, and I think I took care of her well.

I miss her, and probably will for a long time.

14 My parents are 84, and Mom lost her little buddy, a sweet miniature schnauzer, last New Years.

At her age, no one's been pushing her to get another dog, but all of a sudden, while discussing things with other people, she decided to get a new dog two days ago. The other folks tracked down a 2 year old Maltese-poodle who needs a new home and she receives him Monday.

It's all so sudden, but I'm happy for her. She was told that Malti-poos, if that's what you call them, are the ideal small dog. So now I'll probably have a new "little brother" on Monday.

Anyone here know anything about this crossbreed?

16 Love the Dobbie. I have a soft spot for them right around the back of my right calf muscle.

Really, awesome looking dog. We've had German Shepherds for awhile now and tried a rescue Doberman a little while ago. While he was the most lovable thing, he just didn't want to mind me at all. And trying to stop 100 pounds of pure muscle from eating a jogger is just too much for me anymore. MAybe if I tried a puppy it would be different.

Be advised, that is a sneaky way to get you to fall in love with your "temporary" pet, so that it doesn't go back on the 28th. Which is just fine, by the way.

And for those who have the time, volunteer a few hours at your local animal shelter-it really is incredibly fulfilling.

19 I'm thinking the dog won't be surviving the winter. She's old, even though sometimes she doesn't act it. Sometimes, however, she does.

I lost cats two years in a row, around this time. The ones we have now, they eyeball me like "hey, be CAREFUL!" I swear it's not me though. And if they just pay attention to the dog, which they often don't, they'll feel a bit less on edge, I think.

45 When a dog with dominance issues acts up, you need to subordinate it.

Flip it on its back and make it stay there until it clams down. All the while, allow the less dominate dog to smell, lick and annoy the dominating dog.

You are the pack leader. You need to establish the order.

48 Thanks for the condolences horde. I love that quote from Garrett. Ole was 11 which is a decent age for a big dog (probably pitbull labrador cross). He was in a shelter and stole my dad's heart by not barking but just wagging his tail and looking friendly when they were looking for a dog 10 years ago. He never met a stranger although one time my came home and the neighbors reported someone had tried to coax him to a car and he was having nothing to do with them so he apparently was able to pick up evil vibes. I'll have to find a picture of him and send in.

51 We don't have pets anymore, but sometimes we need one and have to borrow it. This week, middle grandbaby was injured at school and had to have some outpatient surgery. He was terrified - absolutely screaming terrified of the medical setting and the doctor and everything.

So I called everyone I know who had a pet, and asked them to take a picture of their cat or dog and send it to my daughter's phone, so she could show the pics to the 5 year old. Some smiles seemed to break thru here and there. It was a good way to send him some happy while they were getting him ready for the procedure.

63 Our male weimaraner attacked our female when the mailman would come. After she had twenty stitches in her leg our vet suggested a safe space for her. So, she has an area of the family room that is hers and goes to that area when she hears the mailman. He can't get to her and it seems to have broken him of attacking her. I had never seen that behavior in a dog before, but he is a rescue and has some peculiarities.

Posted by: Abby at November 19, 2016 04:39 PM (HBU7W)

Maybe a severe displacement thing--since he can't get to the mailman, he bites the closest thing instead. Our dogs have done that when on the leash, and they were frantic to get at another dog that challenged them--they've given each other a nip when they were frantic to mix it up with the alien dog but couldn't get to him.

A lot of dogs go apeshit over the daily mail delivery anyway.

My daughter has dog-sat her neighbor's Maltipoo a few times. Sweet and goofy little thing.

They are not shed-free like poodles but do shed far less than a purebred Maltese. They're kind of dumb but not bag-of-rocks stupid. And they are more laid back and far less stubborn than terriers.

From what I've seen, I would think the breed would be excellent for an older person.

81 I heard or read long ago a theory that dogs going nuts over the mailman, despite it being a daily occurrence, is because they are convinced that since he leaves soon after they start barking, that they have indeed chased him off and they are quite proud of themselves. Makes sense to me.

Thanks to the cobs for this thread and thank you to everyone who sends in their pics. I so look forward to Saturdays.

Some smiles seemed to break thru here and there. It was a good way to send him some happy while they were getting him ready for the procedure.

84 The problem with Scrappy is not that she is dominating Moose, dogs are pack animals and they will establish a pecking order whether we like it or not. The problem with Scrappy sounds like she thinks she is the pack leader. F.N.G. needs to dog up and let Scrappy know F.N.G. and his wife are the pack leaders.

garrett and sinmi had it nailed above, such good advice I'm going to quote them to reinforce their advice:
----------------------------------------
45 When a dog with dominance issues acts up, you need to subordinate it.

Flip it on its back and make it stay there until it clams down. All the while, allow the less dominate dog to smell, lick and annoy the dominating dog.

You are the pack leader. You need to establish the order.
Posted by: garrett at November 19, 2016 04:28 PM (pyZce)
-----------------------------
46 Scrappy's behavior toward Moose is a direct threat to the *owner's* dominance. That cannot be tolerated. Scrappy's owner needs to dominate S the very moment S looks cross-eyed at M.
Posted by: sinmi at November 19, 2016 04:28 PM (SfJSp)
------------------------------

My technique for enforcing dominance is to flip them on their side or back, but then grab their muzzle in my hand and put my face near their face, thus simulating biting their muzzle like what a dog will do to knock them down a notch. If they don't get it I'll growl at the same time.

88 This much concentrated cuteness is contraindicated for the collective.

Anyway, my family always made a point of feeding the senior animal first, letting it out first, etc. and making the others wait until the senior decided she was done. It really works well and is just so natural that the animals have never disagreed. If you are just starting, crate the younger until the elder is done. Same with letting out (you might have to do two walks).

93 The last week of Maire's life, my Mom was in the ICU a few hours away. Tim and I had been driving up every weekend to visit her. But that week I cried and fretted about Maire, because she was going down. We discussed what to do. She hated the vet, had always fought the administration of meds. We didn't want to stress her out in her final days. She wouldn't climb up the stairs to the deck anymore, wouldn't eat, barely drank water.

She'd appeared out of the woods next door to adopt us, and had clearly chosen to return to her origins. We weighed taking her to the vet for Rainbow Bridge time, because she was clearly in pain. We discussed having the vet come to our place (he was only 2 blocks away and probably would have done it).

It just seemed that Maire wanted to do this her own way. So we decided we'd leave it up to Maire and God and nature. It seemed fitting.

But oh, oh, what a long week that was. I agonized for Maire, and so did Tim. Every day we'd awaken and look outside, thinking, surely she's gone. He would go into the woods next door to look for her without success. Then she'd appear at sunset, slowly coming out of the woods. We saw her lying on the ground, about 5 feet from the edge of the property. Then the next time we looked, she'd be 5 or 10 feet closer.

She came to visit us at sunset every night. Tim began to dig a grave for her in the back corner of the yard on Wednesday, near underbrush in a woodsy area. He said it reminded him of his ancestors in Bethlehem PA, and how in the old days people cared for their own dead. He prayed while he dug, for the pet friends of the past, for his relatives who had passed. He cried a little and contemplated his own mortality. He found a huge chunk of squared granite for her headstone, and rolled it to the grave.

I wanted us to have one more night in the bed as a family, so we carefully carried her downstairs and lay her next to Tim's thigh, between us. Harli perched in her own corner. Maire adored Tim - her eyes positively
glowed with adoration for Tim. So we had our last night.

The next morning he carefully carried her down to the yard again, where we'd placed a shelter and a towel and a bowl of water. Eventually she disappeared into the woods where she spent her days.

Finally Saturday arrived, and it was time to drive up to PA to see Mom. Maire was in the back yard in the still-dewy grass, just abiding in the morning sunlight as it glistened on her black fur. I cried and didn't want to leave. Tim gently suggested that maybe it would be easier for her to let go if we weren't around. So we left.

We returned at 11 pm, and began to look for her. I found her under the deck, her head resting on her front paws. She was gone.

Tim gathered her gently and placed her in an open box, and carried it up to the deck. We lit some white candles, and had a little wake for her. Also, so Harli could see that she was no longer with us. Tim opened a special bottle of wine he'd stashed away for a special occasion, and we toasted our Maire.

The next morning we buried her with one of her favorite fishie toys, wrapped in a towel the color of her eyes. I separated the small stones from the clay by the hole, and after he'd filled the grave, arranged them in a horseshoe around her grave. We shed a few tears for her and committed her soul to the place our beloved friends go.

I can't tell you how many times I blubbered over that cat. My mother eventually moved to a rehab as her health improved. I never cried or worried about my mom. I cried over the cat.

Until the day I came home from work less than 6 months later, and found Tim by the sliding glass door of the deck. He had died not 10 feet from the spot where I'd found Maire.

Thank you, Hrothgar. I did see it on KT's "Thoughts" thread, to PaleRider. Beautiful. It's like a very abbreviated haiku poem: "Their candles burn too fast." A dignified Renaissance structure which encapsulates life and death and our relationship to both.
How is it that the tendrils of our hearts become so intertwined with our
pets? It's truly a miracle, when you think about it. And all love
comes from God, so He must have intended us to share these deep bonds. Surely He wouldn't isolate our spirits in the hereafter.

131 I'm really late to the party but I hope this might help with Moose and Squirrel (why isn't Scrappy named "Squirrel"?).

My dog is an unholy terror around other dogs although she has come a long way, but she is completely terrified of other dogs and so wants them dead so she can feel safe. I don't think Scrappy and Moose are having dominance problems because dogs don't think that way. It sounds a whole lot more like resource-guarding: Scrappy is stealing Moose's stuff and then guarding it. This undoubtedly makes perfect sense to Scrappy but I have no idea why Scrappy thinks this way about Moose's stuff unless Scrappy feels some kind of food insecurity or something. We all get cranky if we're hungry or think we're going to starve.

To start to fix this, all dog-dog interactions must be supervised to keep Scrappy from thinking he can get away with stealing Moose's stuff, which is what Scrappy is doing. I would put up some baby gates and keep the dogs separate but visible and sniffable. While you are trying to find an expert to help you, the first thing I would do is teach Scrappy "Leave it" so that he will drop anything and everything when you give him that command. I taught this to my dog well enough that she will even walk away from meat baby food which is just about the highest value food I know of. For dogs, at any rate; not so much for me.

If you want professional help, I would NOT start with a class where there will be other dogs that could conceivably provoke a similar reaction in Scrappy as he is already having with Moose. See if you can find a professional with this organization, https://iaabc.org, and if they don't have anyone close enough to you, call the nearest one and ask for a referral to a local trainer. If you're in the Seattle area, I know people, and I know someone in Houston, but outside of that, I have no clue.

Anyway, you need someone who will come to your house and see your two dogs interact and figure out what's going on. I am afraid that if you take Scrappy to a class, things will just get worse. Most classes focus on obedience, which is really good stuff to have, but you have a big-time behavior problem and you don't want to make that worse.

For some reason, our quartet of cats have taken to being inside much more. Couldn't be the (cold) change in the weather!?! Nawww.

Welp, back to reading the comments.

134 Scrappy's issue isn't "dominance" (which isn't really a thing). She's "resource guarding", which is normal dog behavior, especially if she was deprived earlier in life. She's warning Moose not to mess with her stuff, and Moose is doing exactly the right thing by steering clear of her. She will (if all goes well) eventually get used to Moose leaving her stuff alone. Once she feels like that's "normal", she won't feel the need to warn or threaten him anymore.

What you don't want to do is suppress the warning behavior, because then Moose won't know what Scrappy will or won't tolerate. So let her growl or snarl or whatever -- so long as she's not hurting Moose, and Moose is smart enough to read those signals, it's a good thing.

Meanwhile, you might try giving each dog her own space in the house, like a room where the other dog isn't allowed to go. Put each dog's food and other high-value items in their respective spaces. This way each dog has her own turf where her stuff is safe and she can retreat there if the other dog is stressing her out.

135 Anyone who may still be here reading:

NaCly Dog: Corgies summoned.

Seems t'me like the "corgies summoned" meme began with a video clip or animated GIF of a mob of corgies that came a'runnin' 'round a corner to the porch door, or something like that.

I don't seem to have a copy in my extensive collection of net downloads. And I expect it would be kind-of hard to search for. Anyone remember this and have a clue where that classic clip might be?

136 Mindful,
I think it was a pack of corgi puppies running into the kitchen.
To get dinner, maybe?

I'll look for a minute...

Yes, I remember that. No idea where it might be.

Was that helpful? Well, at least you know you aren't delusional.

138 Chi: I think it was a pack of corgi puppies running into the kitchen. To get dinner, maybe?

I remember it as being an outdoor porch, but you may be right. Or, there are probably several similar scenes of corgi mobs!

Thanks Farmer. But, just because I might not be misremembering about that one doesn't mean I'm not delusional.... in general.

139 Want to really get lost on the web for a while? I just searched (DuckDuckGo) on "corgi stampede." So many results...!

Oh Chi! I'm sorry I missed this before I fled to collect myself! "Emotional Rescue" LOLOL. Look how young they are, OMG. I was living in LA when this was released, worlds and lifetimes ago.

Thank you, have not thought of this in ages!

I have a post-lachrimal hangover, I think, and need a drink.

141 Grab scrappy by the throat and roll to the floor back down and bell up. Have Moose come over while you are holding scrappy down. Let Moose sniff around while you hold scrappy down by the throat. Look scrappy in the eye while this is going down. Scrappy will understand you are the alpha. Repeat as necessary.

142 #141 -- FOR GOD'S SAKE DO NOT DO THIS. Scrappy will not see you as the "alpha" because that's not actually a thing. Scrappy will see you as a crazy violent monkey who is shoving her around for no apparent reason. She'll also associate this behavior with Moose, so you'll be making her MORE hostile towards him.

Scrappy's barking at Moose in order to establish boundaries. You can suppress this behavior, but that doesn't make the boundaries go away. It just means Moose won't know what they are until it's too late. And that's how we end up with "dangerous" dogs who have to be euthanized because they attack other dogs (or people) without warning.

143 I missed Miley here and didn't get to comment back to her bc the pet thread got posted late. I had to go to a wedding.

144 For FNG: When feeding the dogs, first nibble something yourself, like a grape or whatever, with the dogs watching. Then give Moose a little kibble. Do not feed Scrappy until after you've fed Moose.

Food is a big indicator of pecking order, so you as Alpha making it clear that Moose, and not Scrappy, is next in line should help. If you are giving both dogs treats at the same time, always feed Moose first.
