Sunday Night Overnight Open Thread (10/30/16)[Mis. Hum.]

sunday nite ont.jpg

What were you doing tonight at 8PM? Were you watching the World Series, Sunday Night Football? Perhaps you were online paying bills? Maybe you were online visiting with friends and/or family via Skype or Face Time.

At 8PM Eastern on October 30, 1938 a young actor by the name of Orson Welles frightens the nation via radio.

The show began on Sunday, October 30, at 8 p.m. A voice announced: “The Columbia Broadcasting System and its affiliated stations present Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater on the air in ‘War of the Worlds’ by H.G. Wells.”

Sunday evening in 1938 was prime-time in the golden age of radio, and millions of Americans had their radios turned on. But most of these Americans were listening to ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his dummy “Charlie McCarthy” on NBC and only turned to CBS at 8:12 p.m. after the comedy sketch ended and a little-known singer went on. By then, the story of the Martian invasion was well underway.

As we approach Halloween, let us show concern for the children. Let's keep them safe and don't let them play with Mainway Toys.

Here's a pretty cool costume. Beats going as a Smurf.

Halloween prank at the drive-thru. So what are you 'rons & 'ettes preparing to do tomorrow night?

[x] Woman

Not your typical conservative or Republican. Camille Paglia slams Cankles Hillary Clinton as a disaster.

Lesbian feminist author and professor Camille Paglia has delivered a scathing rebuke of Hillary Clinton, saying the sole reason for the Democratic presidential nominee’s success is because she is a woman.
“It’s an outrage how she’s played the gender card,” Ms. Paglia told The Spectator magazine in an interview published Friday. “She is a woman without accomplishment. ‘I sponsored or co-sponsored 400 bills.’ Oh really? These were bills to rename bridges and so forth. And the things she has accomplished have been like the destabilization of North Africa, causing refugees to flood into Italy … The woman is a disaster!”
Ms. Paglia, who has taught humanities and media studies at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia since 1984, also slammed modern-day feminism as coddling women to their own detriment.
“We are rocketing backwards here to the Victorian period with this belief that women are not capable of making decisions on their own,” she said. “This is not feminism — which is to achieve independent thought and action. There will never be equality of the sexes if we think that women are so handicapped they can’t look after themselves.

Recently we featured college campus in South Africa. The ONT is sad to report. The same stupid shit which occurs here on US college campuses is also taking place in Canada.

It appears rank stupidity has gone world wide on college campuses.

Special snow flakes in Austin who attend The University of Texas are offended. Not sure why they are? What they are protesting goes on in real life with people.

The ONT has featured this young lady before. She's at it again on YouTube running for President. You don't want wrinkly vagina balls running your country, do you?

Speaking of elections, last week The ONT had a link about the Pirate Party of Iceland. Elections were held yesterday in Iceland. They finished in 3rd place.

But there was enough upheaval to cost the P.M. his job.

Elections, vote early, vote often. It also doesn't matter if you're dead. Disenfranchised electorate, where is the Left? Oh yeah, it only helps them.

Hoping for SMOD? Well, continue to hope away. Earth is safe another day.

Has the NFL suffered irreparable damage? A recent poll reveals that a disgruntled bench warmer may have damaged the world's biggest sport.

There’s a price to be paid for everything — even for being politically correct in a “politically correct time.” A new poll shows that the main cause of the National Football League’s much discussed ratings drop is, in fact, the National Anthem Protests sparked by the very ignorant and callow Colin Kaepernick.

But here’s the really bad news for the NFL: some of the boycotting fans may never come back.

Marx was right, sort of. More thought and commentary on the NFL.

The Tasmanian Devil as an antibiotic. Not quite the Looney Tunes. How to milk a Tasmanian Devil.

Milking a Tasmanian devil might sound like a harrowing ordeal, but Faulkner says this was not the case. “When they have contact with humans they don’t try and rip your calf muscle off your leg,” he says. Tasmanian devils in the wild (and in conservation facilities that encourage them to retain wild behavior) are actually rather timid around people.

So no keepers were savaged while collecting the precious milk. “They do very well when they’re dark, they’re confined, they’re concealed; they’ll relax, and so essentially it’s a very nonintrusive process,” Faulkner says.

News tips, loose change and a cup of sugar can be sent here.

No tricks only treats at The Group.

The staff and management at The ONT were made aware of two possible Genius Award Winners. We will let you Morons decide who the Genius Award Winner is.

Genius Award Winner candidate 2

39 Regarding parking ticket guy. The city, in one of their e-mails, said it's up to him to prove he was not parked in a taxi rank. I don't think that's how it works. For one thing, you cannot really prove a negative, and for another, the onus is on the accuser to prove wrongdoing on the part of the accused.

I wonder if a wiser head in the city's enforcement office got wind of this, and said, "Hey, this stops right here. We don't want to go to court and be made fools of."

53 CNN purposefully misquoted Trump from his Greeley CO rally this afternoon, making hims sound like he was encouraging vote fraud and saying his supporters can and should vote multiple times.

They later stealth edited it, but what goes out front, as we know, is what sticks.

We were at that rally, and made a point after, on the way out of the arena, to pass close by the press desks and stare at the stringers all busily typing away on their Macbooks. I gave a couple of them the finger, but smilingly so.

Seven yards, a.k.a. 21 ft.

And yes, Steck absolutely rocked the Derringer.

Amusingly, she's probably shot hers now more than 95% of every other Derringer owner ever has, theirs. Nothing to base that on, but instinct, and having known lots of folks who own, but don't shoot, their Derringers!

So the NFL, being a corporation in a (relatively) free market, will look for other fans. They'll go full left-wing, and proudly get lots of QUEER in the game.

94 I just saw a documentary on "the great Inca rebellion" -
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/ancient/great-inca-rebellion.html

This about the 1536 native Peruvian attack on new city Lima. Pizarro and his boys fended it off.

... for certain values of "his boys". This battle ended up in a Spanish court because Pizarro was claiming that the Spaniards did all the hard work. This turned out to be, get this, bullshit. When the attack started, Pizarro's native concubine sent word to her mum, and her mum sent down a massive Peruvian army. The locals told the court as much. Now, we know the truth because archaeologists have dug up the dead from the battle. A couple of the guys were shot, mostly the leaders. Everyone else was clubbed in the head, that is, killed by native warriors.

So the conquest of Peru looks a lot like the conquest of Mexico: the local empire was hated by all the other natives at the time, and when the Spanish showed up they drained all the rivers for people lining up for baptism and a chance to kick Inca ass.

They did tell me about one guy in town who heard the show and went into the woods with his rifle to prepare to fight off the Martians. There were apparently quite a few idiots like that around the country, but what's the surprise of that. Look how many idiots are here today, ready to elect the most unqualified, criminal, self-interested, corrupt idiot of them all to the highest office in the land if not the world.

I got my Dad's Beretta 1919 awhile back when he asked me to clean the grease he had it packed in. It is a .25 caliber semi auto the size of a Saturday Night Special. I cleaned it and took it to the range. At 7 yards, I was lucky to hit anywhere on the entire target and I am a good shot. My father passed a little over a year ago and I ended up giving the gun to my younger brother with the warning to never carry it and never keep it loaded. The gun is inherently unsafe and he has better weapons for defense.

186 Historical research suggests the panic was far less widespread than newspapers had indicated at the time. "[T]he panic and mass hysteria so readily associated with 'The War of the Worlds' did not occur on anything approaching a nationwide dimension," American University media historian W. Joseph Campbell wrote in 2003. He quotes Robert E. Bartholomew, an authority on mass panic outbreaks, as having said that "there is a growing consensus among sociologists that the extent of the panic ... was greatly exaggerated".

This position is supported by contemporary accounts. "In the first place, most people didn't hear [the show]," said Frank Stanton, later president of CBS. Of the nearly 2,000 letters mailed to Welles and the Federal Communications Commission after "The War of the Worlds," currently held by the University of Michigan and the National Archives and Records Administration, roughly 27% came from frightened listeners or people who witnessed any panic. After analyzing those letters, A. Brad Schwartz concluded that although the broadcast briefly misled a significant portion of its audience, very few of those listeners fled their homes or otherwise panicked. The total number of protest letters sent to Welles and the FCC is also low in comparison with other controversial radio broadcasts of the period, further suggesting the audience was small and the fright severely limited.

There's no actual corruption, you nimrod. Just a lot of accusations without an ounce of proof. I know it's been a D talking point. That the Clinton Foundation stopped diarrhea and AIDS. Oh, and that they have a 97% pass through rate (97% of all money goes to charity).

Which is sort of true. In that 97% of the foundation money flows to other Clinton "charities". Almost none actually goes to anything any of us would consider, well, charitable, but hey.

They forgot that in their pursuit of the hipsters, they turned off whatever regular beer drinkers were still drinking their watered down Buds

Posted by: torquewrench at October 30, 2016 11:34 PM (noWW6)

Quite frankly, when did it become our responsibility to take over Africa's health care bills? I never liked the fact that Bush was pouring billions into Africa in the name of AIDs. And what did it achieve, anyway? Nothing.

When there is an infectious disease problem breaking out in some country or countries, the extent of the US' responsibility is to halt entries from those nations or people who visited them until things are cleaned up. It isn't our responsibility to try to clean them up and the US government really doesn't have the right to go spend our money there.

What it sounds like (at this early stage) is that Huma was "archiving" her emails on her stealthy yahoo account (humaabeddin@yahoo.com --or however you spell her name--). My opinion? Great carbines. Not as ideal for +200 yards as a modern AR platform, but 99% of the shots on game or varmints you'll ever take in life are sub-200 yd. shots.

I *enjoy shooting* the Mini more than the AR. I own the AR because I'm an accuracy snob.

Your mileage may vary.

Good luck!

In fact, if I were designing a system of government, I would have set out a list of enumerated powers for said government, and strictly limited them to said powers.

Posted by: Flyboy at October 31, 2016 12:57 AM (iQN6g)

A year is not too bad. Jump box may not have enough juice in it, if a long session of cranking is needed.

First, what kind of car? If, by chance, it is a Diesel with glow plugs, starter fluid is a bad idea, and is usually forbidden by the manufacturer. If it is a relatively modern car with fuel injection, and an electric fuel pump, starting fluid may be unnecessary, as the electric pump should put pressure on the fuel rail while cranking.

Do check the oil and coolant levels before you start, and add fluid if they are low. Does the gas tank smell fresh, or nasty? If the fuel tank smells real nasty, better to take it out and have it cleaned before trying to start it up. If it has been sitting only a year, the tank should not be really nasty, but the gas will have lost some volatility, and won't burn as readily. 404 283 What it sounds like (at this early stage) is that Huma was "archiving" her emails on her stealthy yahoo account (humaabeddin@yahoo.com --or however you spell her name--). My guess would be that used an email client on her devices, IMAP grabbed the emails, and they ended up on Weiners laptop. Could be some kind of Apple sync feature, I'm not sure what devices they used.
Posted by: Harry Paratestes at October 30, 2016 11:58 PM (cJrMO)

I'm speculating that the emails weren't forwarded to her computer but that her email program was set up with her various accounts set up using POP3.

With POP3, deleting emails off the server doesn't delete them off the computer.

Here's the kicker: Huma also had it set up directly to Hillary's accounts. Every email Hillary sent or received on her illegal server or with the Clinton Foundation is on the machine and they weren't deleted when Hillary wiped her server.

Hillary wasn't a fan of email and Huma handled a lot of things for her.

409 Do check the oil and coolant levels before you start, and add fluid if they are low. Does the gas tank smell fresh, or nasty? If the fuel tank smells real nasty, better to take it out and have it cleaned before trying to start it up. If it has been sitting only a year, the tank should not be really nasty, but the gas will have lost some volatility, and won't burn as readily. Adding a few gallons of new-bought fuel will help this a lot.

414 Another thing about my Huma email theory.

I'm speculating that the machine was set up with multiple users: Huma and Weiner.

Weiner mostly used the computer but Huma hadn't logged out of her user account and left Outlook running.

That means that every time Weiner used the computer, Outlook was silently running on Huma's user account and downloading every email that she and Hillary sent or received. Because it used POP3, deleting emails off the server didn't delete them off the machine.

Huma ended up mostly using another computer and had no idea their shared computer was still downloading email.

Just my two cents.

I think you are 100% CORRECT.

Which means that there was a computer lying around on the coffee table of Anthony Weiner's Pedophile Pad which contained every classified email that ever passed through the State Department, most likely.

It's a security breach of epic proportions -- makes anything Bradley Manning or Edward Snowden did look like child's play buy comparison. Especially considering that Weiner spent all day on porn sites and engaged in illegal sexting with honeypot temptresses, lord knows who could have been easily hacking or otherwise accessing or getting control over that computer.

Just sitting there, day after day for years, downloading top secret documents, unsecured, unknown to anyone, the crown jewel of espionage leaks, unattended in some New York loft as Human jetted around the world and Carlos jacked of at the gym.

Interesting ... but he's wrong.

My movie says Comey had good evidence against Clinton during the initial investigation but made a judgement call to leave the decision to the American public. For reasons of conscience, and acting as a patriot, Comey explained in clear language to the public exactly what evidence the FBI found against Clinton. The evidence looked daming because it was. Under this interpretation, Comey took a bullet to his reputation for the sake of the Republic. He didn't want the FBI to steal this important decision away from the people, but at the same time he couldn't let the people decide blind. So he divulged the evidence and stepped away, like the action hero who doesn't look back at the explosion.

That doesn't make any sense. he's acting as if Comey were going to send Clinton right to trial. He wasn't. He only had the power to make recommendations to Justice - and we all know that they would have done nothing.

And his earlier contention that everyone seems to think that Comey was a straight-shooter with loads of integrity is meaningless. We heard the same shit about Patrick Fitzgerald, and he made a mockery of the law twice (even violating the law the first time when he pursued the Valerie Plame joke of a case hauling Bush people in to interrogate even long after he knew that it was Armitradge).

The truth is that Comey is just a douchebag criminal who made himself an accessory after the fact.

The jousters are definitely impressive, and that'd be a heck of a sport to have a revival in. Definitely throw that in the list of things I'd like to see. I'd even learn to ride a horse if they'd let me do it.

I wasn't one. I did sword and shield combat in the SCA, and it's been a couple of years since I last fought thanks to time and money reasons that I'm only just starting to alleviate (and I miss it, so I will get back to it sooner or later). Less glamorous, but a load of fun. It's also the only sport I was ever any good at, which is why I stuck with it for so long despite not being able to really afford it at the time.

You don't have to be a metalworker, either, but it helps. I bought the metal pieces, and made most of my armor out of leather (which I can do a utilitarian job of working), or plastic (which can look a lot like lacquered leather from a few paces). Now he doesn't and with the continual shit-seep that is Hillary he is concerned more about being indicted by a Trump AG than being thrown shade by a Clinton AG.

462

The truth is that Comey is just a douchebag criminal who made himself an accessory after the fact.

Maybe, but I read Comey as someone who is basically an upstanding FBI man but not as politically savvy as he needed to be given the position he found himself in, and clearly not up to dealing with Clinton politics ...

He may have felt that he had a good case against Hillary, yet really had no choice but to bow to Loretta's DoJ corruption ... He likely had no allies, even in Congress, at least none that could protect him, and I suspect he got The Message from the Meeting on the Tarmac ... so he played things as Loretta said ... and then realized that he had been screwed.

Carlos Danger, that tight little pimple, was "popped" in 2011, and failed at his run for NYC Mayor (came in 4th with 4.9% of the vote) and realized that his political life was over; no one was going to touch him, and he couldn't even get a job via (somehow) Hillary. Maybe she humiliated him on the phone as she rejected him, probably playing on his sexting and making offers with "conditions".

Carlos, maybe while compulsively sexting over the last 5 years, probably noticed that his wife frequently received e-mails ... and hatched a plot. He'd make it back to the Big Time ...

At some point someone catches Carlos and tells, eventually, the NYPD / FBI. There's an investigation and someone sees some of Hillary's e-mails ... Comey, seeing an opportunity to resurrect / clean off his dignity and values, does things (much closer) to the right way.

This sounds sufficiently dreary and petty. It must, therefore, be true, or at least close enough.

465 I think Comey knowingly and deliberately compromised his professional ethics, saw the fallout from it, had and either felt the pangs of conscience or started to realize that he was a tool and had been used and was soon to be cast away. Then Carlos Danger, through being his usual sleazebag idiot self, dropped gift-wrapped a once in a lifetime chance at redemption right in his lap.

I doubt think it's any more complicated than that. All it requires to be believable is an guy who's not 100% a dick, and a guy who is 100% a dick.

I think he's a trimmer - if he works under Democrats he accommodates himself to their needs, but if it looks possible that he'd have to deal with Trump he's got to cover his ass 'cause who knows who Trump might name as AG.

470 Can Trump just fire everybody in D.C. and start fresh?

Oh, well, it was a nice fantasy there for a minute.

This whole Weiner thing is making me nauseous. I keep hoping the adults will come to be in charge, but I fear none of the people from that generation ever managed to grow up sufficiently to run a lemonade stand, let alone the greatest country this world has ever known.

People make fun of the Eisenhower years, but at least somebody was in charge and got things done without sending anyone a photo of his dick or taking dirty money from the enemies of our country.

I don't long for the '50's or anything like that, I just wish that somebody who is serious, ethical, moral and brave would march in and reclaim the country for the rest of us.

Or SMOD. SMOD would also cure this mess. Right handily.

Another factor in Comey's decision making was the pile of resignation letters from FBI personnel piling up on his desk. He knew that if he did nothing, most likely someone in that pile would become a government whistle-blower and leak all this shit to one or two of the friendly press; then said shit would hit the fan and would splatter on him as well as Hillarity!; self-preservation is a powerful incentive. Comey may have thought it was better for him to get ahead of that possibility. But not for a moment do I think Comey did this out of any sense of duty or patriotism; he's adam's apple deep in the shit that is DC corruption.

478 Good Morning horde

My grandparents use to listen to Mercury Theatre but always said they missed that night as they were walking back home after visiting freinds with my mother as a baby in tow.

Posted by: Skip at October 31, 2016 04:40 AM (sWbjH)

479 Hey, Chi. So how did the soup come out? Eggspurt opinion and all that.

Did you see my Asparagus Soup recipe today?

This morning, I'm starting with a can of pink beans, the only time I use canned beans, to make refried beans. Then I'll make a seasoned ground pork mixture so I can have burritos later today. My other fillings are cheddar and jack cheese, sliced Kalamata olives and sour cream; if I have any chopped onion left from cooking the beans and pork, I'll sprinkle some of those inside, too.

Oh, and on the 'bean' front, I think you had previously mentioned you hate some beans because they taste mealy. An important tip I learned from cooking shows is when cooking dried beans, DO NOT add salt to the beans until they are almost cooked to finished. Something about the salt inhibits the cooking process and makes beans mealy.

I remember you mentioning you forgot to buy the ham hocks. But that's the beauty of soup: Unless you omit a key ingredient, like leaving beans out of Navy Bean Soup, it's hard to screw up. I've had Navy Bean Soup with a tablespoon or two of tomato paste added, as well. It doesn't hurt, but it does change the appearance/color.

The asparagus soup is quite tasty. It's best made in the fall/winter when the spears are large and woody. It's not a springtime soup because who wants to disguise those tender, pencil-thin spears?
