Thursday Night Overnight Open Thread (9/15/16) [Mis. Hum.]

Europe is being hit with a "terrorism tax".

Although Europe has suffered terrorism before, this time it's different. Instead of big and relatively infrequent terrorist attacks, these new attacks are small, numerous and geographically dispersed. This change is a big deal, because it makes it possible for terrorists to turn attacks into "a tax" that depresses economic activity by imposing new costs and changing economic behavior.

It seems that tourism has taken a nose dive. Europe was counting on tourism, terrorism frightens it away.

One of the big changes is no headphone jack. Is it a good development? Or a step backwards?

When we allow a company, or a cartel from an incumbent industry, to monopolize the things that can plug into products that we all use, to convert their commercial preferences to legal obligations, we shut down innovation, at the expense of all the people who stand to benefit from that innovation.

18 >> It seems that tourism has taken a nose dive. Europe was counting on tourism, terrorism frightens it away.

Not just terrorism. Simply the more Islamification there is in a place, the less attractive for Western tourists.

Importing muslim slums into Belgium or Paris even without terrorism makes them less attractive places for tourism.

Tourism has been huge for Turkey but I have no doubt it will nosedive as Erdogan converts it into more of an Islamist country.

Here's a terrorism tax.

I read about a production of Hamlet in London starring Michael Sheen. I found a round-trip ticket LA/London for $300. I could have made the flight, holed up in a hostel near the theater for a night, and come back in three days. After taxes and fees in both LA and London, the flight was $1200, and I know why -- terrorism. Soooo, the theater, the restaurants, and the hostel or B&B I would have stayed in got one less customer.

My suggestion for obtaining a bass guitar, a lead guitar, a tattooed singer with three black back-ups, along with a couple of drummers and a kid on tambourine did not go over too well.

Posted by: grammie winger at September 15, 2016 10:33 PM (bpfzP)

58 I was in computer client support for several years in Ohio. My Indian co-workers were always amazed at how wonderfully patient I was with my clients, who loved me.

And then I get a new co-worker we'll call "Matt." There were only 3 candidates that applied for the job, he was hired to teach some other people a lesson, he had some kind of disability, he was in constant legal trouble either being sued or suing others which made him difficult to fire and he was one of the most miserable bastards I've ever met.

He couldn't understand things quickly, would raise his voice in frustration, got in a physical fight with someone in tech support, sounded really shitty with clients many times and sat right next to me. One time, he came back from lunch. Something happened in his car and a guy at a light got out of his car, grabbed a crowbar and smashed his back window.

I'm not a confrontational person, don't really raise my voice, but we would actually be in our cubicle at the back of the building hollering at each other. E-mails would be sent to our upper managers "They're yelling again." but they never did anything.

One day Matt sat facing his computer in the corner. I picked up a large pair of scissors, pointed them at the base of his neck and questioningly looked at my manager, most joking, for permission to finally get the guy out of our lives. She laughed but secretly wanted me to do it.

One day, he took a long lunch and moved everything out of his apartment - that's how he left his relatively pretty, heavy-set, kind of poor self esteem wife.

He was miserable in the job. After many heart to heart talks, he came up with the idea, (okay - I was a large part of this) to reconcile with his wife and use her credit for further technical training. I'm not entirely proud of that, okay a little, but she took him back.

Finally, one day, he didn't come in. No messages. Two days passed. And then three days which is job abandonment. He had reformatted his computer before he left and we never heard from him again.

Thanks for the therapy session. I'm going to check out the quizzes and see which of us may have been the psychopath.

But because generations of Congressional interns went backpacking with a Eurailpass and got laid in Barcelona, there's this perpetual push for high-speed passenger rail in the U.S.

I have seen people in cars deliberately block a semi from getting back into the travel lane. They go slow enough to make the truck driver think he can pass. As soon as they get him in the passing lane, they speed up. If the truck slows down they slow down. This can go on for miles while traffic backs up behind the truck.

Of course, everyone blames the truck driver.

How do you get from the railhead to the where the shipping is needed? What about cost of breaking loads and transshipping?

Trains are good and nice and controllable and good for bulk like ore and wheat, but they are also not flexible. If you tried to do "just in time" stocking with a rail schedule someone is going to have to warehouse it all at an intermediary site, and then you have no reason to do "just in time" (scare quotes because it is never just in time. It is always never-quite-in-time unless you stockpile ahead)

And for goodness sake never send nursery stock by train, it will get side-tracked and it will all die.

And to be honest, the roads were built for trucking, not driving.

The thing is there is a need for highway choke points like cities and bridges to be built to top level loads and they are not. The cities hate streets and roads and never fund them where they need to be. Socialist cities are the freaking worst, too.

I think anyone who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ should be able to share in the Lord's Supper. I understand the rationale for people not accepting that, but it makes me sad too. I have been attending the Eastern Orthodox Church when I get a chance. I can't take it there either, but they have something I have never seen before. They place pieces of unconsecrated bread in a basket in the back of the line for communion, so that even if you can't partake you can still have the unconsecrated bread. I was very touched when several people in the congregation who know that I'm not Orthodox came and gave me some bread

150 You could triple the total miles of rail in the U.S., and still have but a tiny percentage of the capacity it would take to move any meaningful number of trucks from the highway to the rails.

Rails don't go to all the small towns, and as you'll note, there's not much in the way of FedEx or UPS rolling in the boxcars.

Rail is great for moving tens or hundreds of loads of product to various hubs, waypoints and distribution centers.

Three hundred gondolas of coal? Rail rules.

Van load of household furnishings and belongings going halfway across country? It'll get there faster by truck, point to point.

Every mode of transportation has it's strengths and weaknesses. Thing is, the USA has worked out those differences far better than just about anyplace else on earth. And that pisses off all the right people, which only adds shine to the apple.

161 I was reading something about the psychopathy research. They came up with some way to turn off the area of the brain responsible, and turn a normal person into a pyschopath (or something close to it, who knows really).

The people who got in that induced state described it. They would show them pictures of people in obvious pain, and other awful images. They said, without the empathy, it looked sort of funny. Seeing someone in pain was funny to them.

Neat, Mike.

I check my change too so I can save all the U.S. coins for travel and to save any of the really old ones of, say, WW2 vintage. So I've got a few pre-1952 George V items too although I haven't looked into their worth. (I also keep ones from the '50s of Elizabeth with her 'young' portrait.)

And I've gotten a George V penny from the then-separate British colony of Newfoundland from 1943; 1947 Canadian penny; and 1943 Canadian dime. All three have the "ET IND. IMP." to go along with the "D.G. REX" as India was still a colony then.

212 Thanks, Grammie. I have an affection for Missouri Synod Lutherans but it seems that in the south, at least, they are struggling.

I grew up Southern Baptist with a heavy reform streak and began mostly going to non-denominational churches around age 30. I have a bit of a charismatic streak, too.

Our church isn't huge but our pastor is a member of a well-known Christian music trio. I'm not a fan of the concert atmosphere during the musical portion of the service but the younger folks in my extended family love it. The preaching is solid so I can live with the music as long as my family is active in church.

I attended a charismatic Episcopal church in Dallas for about 5 years in the nineties. THAT was interesting

Aroun here we call it slow-I-tis.

Say it like you think Rhine is the proper way to say Ryan.

I think its in the ground water supply, some are immune, some are not.

It's the local form of "traffic" in rural areas.

Our subspecies is deathly afeared of curves. Given how fuckin windy some roads are, the chances to pass are limited. An they always, always speed up there.

City Slow-I-tis is a different breed.

Equally malicious.

245 They think psychopaths are about 1% of the general population. 1 out of
100 are clinical psychopaths. Of the male population in federal prison,
that number is about 25% they claim.

The top 10 professions where psychopaths gravitate are:

CEO -
Lawyers -
Media -
Salesmen -
Surgeon -
Journalists -
Police -
Clergy -
Chef -
Civil Servants -

That's what they say. Surgeons are interesting. Doctors tend to be
more empathetic, but the subset of surgeons tend to be more psycho. In fact,
a joke is the surgery gives a way for "it puts on the lotion" types to
make a productive use of their desires to cut people up.

Note
this is statistical and involves the fraction of psychopaths in that
line of work. It doesn't mean they all are, and in fact the absolute
ratio may be small, but just relatively greater than 1%.

And how do the winds and currents move in the Indian Ocean? Prevailing winds in the Northern Hemisphere are westerly. I'd expect them to be easterly in the Southern Hemisphere. And enough time has passed for floating debris to have drifted a thousand miles or more.

Not trying to pick a fight; just trying to point out that where floating debris washes ashore is not definitive as to where the debris first hit the ocean.

And the ones I'm thinking about as Psychopaths did take care for their troops... but it was out of Duty and learned behavior, more than empathy.

To them it was like caring for their Weapon...

Thinking on it.... Patton??? hmmmm.....

times eleventy.

BUT.

There are times when I can literally sense the "click" of the switch, then all empathy dissipates, instantly.

The Machine kicks in.

Three times in my life, I've looked over the sights of a gun at a human being. One such, being my own brother. The other two were duty matters, inasmuch that I wore a badge in those days.

What I most remember about those circumstances, was the absolutely perfect, firm, fixed, non-wobbling sight picture I held on the subject, and the absolute clarity of mental processing as to whether they were obeying my verbal commands, or not.

Fortunately for them, they are did obey, and lived.

I far prefer being a whole, empathetic Human Being. But experience tells me I can go all Cyborg on some miscreant's ass too, in less than a moment's notice.

I'm okay with that.

386 There's a difference between psychopaths and sociopaths. The terms are not even official, their just words that have become popular to describe some constellation of symptoms. The official diagnosis is "antisocial personality disorder" or some shit like that. Both psychos and socios are that.

And the images the term conjures in our mind is not exactly accurate either. The term "psycho" makes people think of "psychotic" really, I think, someone who batshit insane and violently so.

A "good" feature of pyschopathy is they have much less fear and anxiety than the normal population. I think their tolerance for pain is usually higher as well.

392 386 There's a difference between psychopaths and sociopaths.

Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at September 16, 2016 12:54 AM (DW+

Anti-social (psychopaths and sociopaths) fear getting caught and being revealed for what they truly are for everybody to see. They will stop at nothing and destroy theirown mothers and chldren to keep the mask up.

They have little to no fear in other areas because they see people as objects and as tools for their own personal use. Like toilet paper or a hammer.

409 Oh, psychopaths can be violent. Very violent.

Sociopaths and pyschopaths share a lot of traits. The differences are this. Socios are easily agitated, prone to fits of rage and all that. It's very hard for them to hold down a job.

Psychopaths are cold and calculating.

When sociopaths commit crimes, they will be haphazard and spontaneous.

Psychopaths will meticulously plan and execute their crimes.

For example, a sociopath might kill a girl in a spontaneous fit of rage because she said something that triggered him, or reminded him of his mother or something. He'll do it on the spot and won't be good at concealing evidence.

A psychopath will carefully plot the murder, be very careful to plan it to avoid being caught, and will execute it with cold precision.

Bundy was most likely a pyschopath, not a sociopath.

Castle is the candidate for the Constitution Party (their Nevada affiliate is the Independent American Party, who literally have their own armed militia).

Of note, neither McMullin or Stein will be on the Nevada ballot, and no write-ins allowed.

Aside from Hillary and Trump, the two minor parties with guarunteed ballot access are the Libertarians and the IAP, so Johnson and Castle will be on the ballot. Also on the Nevada ballot is "Rocky" de la Fuente, who ran in a bunch of Dem primaries, and of course "None of these candidates".

Because I've been sick, I haven't managed to negotiate an official kickback to Ace for any orders placed through raisinvalleyfarms.com -- but make sure that "moron" is in the comments.

The essential crux of the SCOTUS case was that raisins should compete on quality instead of politics. Try some raisinvalleyfarms.com raisins and see if quality means something.

442 150 You could triple the total miles of rail in the U.S., and still have but a tiny percentage of the capacity it would take to move any meaningful number of trucks from the highway to the rails.

One exception. That asshole Buffett has learned how to rent politicians and is using his Democrat Party buddies to block oil pipelines from the Bakken fields. Therefore the oil has to travel in HIS BNSF oil tanker cars. Which makes millions for Buffett, but screws the grain farmers and elevators as they cannot move their products. And the cities are all complaining about thousands of tanker cars carrying flammable oil rolling through the center of their cities 24/7.

Buffett loves it, the progressive politicians he rents have made him millions.

465 OK, I was convinced by you guys to take the "Isidewith" test. My results ranged from 87% agree with Trump down to 15% agree with Stein. But who the heck is "Darrell Castle"? Some kind of joke name they put in there just to play with people's minds?

If you scroll down on the results page, they also tell you what themes "matter" to you most. Mine were:

"Small Government vs Big Government
94% Small
You side extremely towards “Small Government”, meaning you very strongly believe the government is overly bureaucratic, inefficient, and wasteful.

Collectivism vs Individualism
80% for Individualism
You side strongly towards “Individualism”, meaning you strongly support free market policies that create opportunity for personal liberty and success.

Laissez-faire vs Keynesian
72% for Laissez-faire
You side strongly towards “Laissez-faire”, meaning you strongly believe government intervention in economic markets leads to long term negative results."

Did I really need to take a test to learn this? No.

Wow. I couldn't even get those results if I was intentionally trying to guess exactly what Trump's positions were on every issue.

About 20% of the questions where on topics I had basically no opinion on, but they didn't have a "Don't give a shit" option, so I clicked random answers. That's probably how I ended up agreeing with Stein 15% of the time.

He's the Constitution Party candidate (appearing on the Nevada ballot under the name of the Constitution Party's Nevada affiliate, the Independent American Party).

Interesting enough, he's on the Nevada ballot because the IAP is, along with the LP, one of two minor parties with guaranteed ballot access.

Stein is not on the Nevada ballot according to the Secretary of State, and Nevada does not allow write-in candidates.

473 Another very interesting feature of the test is the "ideology heat map" showing what parts of the country most agree with me. Hilariously, and tragically, I live smack dab in the center of the area that LEAST agrees with me. But the map also reveals that the five most liberal areas in the entire US are

-- coastal Northern California
-- Vermont
-- Olympia, Washington
-- Portland, Oregon
-- West Los Angeles (Santa Monica, Malibu, etc.)

I guess that's not surprising. Well, maybe it IS surprising that these places' reputations are actually all accurate -- the areas you think are leftie, are in fact that leftie.

Nevada is voting on whether to legalize marijuana or not... legal just as long as you buy from highly taxed stores. Growing your own plant for most Nevadans will still be highly illegal.

F**kin' rent seeking...

Not the most important of the four propositions up for a vote.

The important one is the Bloomberg anti-gun initiative that must be defeated.

The two others are state Constitutional amendments that have to be approved twice, once in November, and a second time at the 2018 general election.

Darryl Castle 72%

The isidewith poll put me at extremely right-wing and slightly libertarian.

It had some interesting comments on 16 different areas at the bottom. Some of them seemed pretty accurate but more than a few were off a bit, I would say. Not wildly incorrect, just off a bit.

It said that I was mildly for globalization - versus protectionism LOL. There weren't really any questions that actually addressed those areas.

499 Howdy, folks. Up late running a vid production that I had hoped would already be finished and online. Long day.

Long comment follows. Just go on to the next comment. Ignore the drunk babbling and drooling on the bar.

People who have faced death and lived to tell about it.

1978, south of Paris, Texas, lost on some lonely two-lane in the middle of a February night. I was asleep in the shotgun seat. Just before I dozed off, I thought I should crawl in the back seat (listen to your inner voice, folks!), but I didn't want to leave the driver alone. (As if a groggy person in the front seat is any help staying awake!)

I woke up with broken glass and blood all over me, cold wind blowing. I groggily ask the driver what happened. "We hit a horse." I think we went through that several times before I stayed conscious. He said a couple of horses crossed the road and he had enough time to think, "that was close!" when another one ran out. (He got a tiny cut on one arm.)

A check on the rest of my body suggested no vital organs damaged, but I thought I had lost several of my front lower teeth. Hit the dash, I think, in that age before shoulder belts. I didn't think I was going to die, but loosing front teeth p'd me off. However, after prying my lower lip off of them, all my teeth were all still there, save for a tiny chip on one tooth. So, I was pretty good at that point, feeling lucky.

I remember the cold wind, the ambulance guys cutting my shirt off (I remember the shirt, a nice one I'd had since high school), the ride to the hospital. "Watch out, guys," I told them, "there's horses on the road tonight." Less amusing than I thought I was, no doubt. I must've been pretty delirious from blood loss and adrenaline. And surviving.

I remember the surgeon remarking that I was pretty messed up. I mumbled, oh, it's not that bad is it? He said my face looked like "hamburger." Ew! So I shut up and let him get right to work. Eighty stitches, in various places around my head. See my cool scar on my jaw? It was from a broken beer bottle in a bar fight, really. Naw.

That post between the windshield from the side vent (IH Traveler) saved my life - it was folded all the way down. Horse was caught on that and decapitated. A half-second difference, it would have been me.

Angels insisted I had to live so I could be a dad. Thanks!

Early 1990s, Chicago, getting home late and inebriated, walking down Argyle ("Little VietNam") from the El stop, I feel a poke in my back and a guy says, "Step down this alley." Milady asks me, what do we do? I said, just keep walking. Guy gives up on the uncooperative, besotted couple.

A few steps beyond, and Milady says, "Did you see a gun?" and I am suddenly highly cognizant of the size and shape of what had been poked in my back. Duh! Wow!

Guy was obviously not a killer, just a lame-ass crook neighbor who decided not to press the issue. But, I mean, f' it. If you're going to shoot me, you're going to have to do it out here under the lights where they can find the body, not back in some alley where I might not be found 'til I rot and stink.

Called a couple of old acquaintances in the middle of the night, just to say, hi, I'm alive! Adrenaline is a heckuva drug.

Various cars spinning out of control, and other adventures. Burst appendix at nine years old. An illness a couple of years ago that felt like it could be fatal. Begging God, either take me or heal me, don't leave me like this! Surviving is nice.

I am not a risk-taker, really - life is risky enough.

And I've never wanted a tattoo - life has tattooed me aplenty.

I can tell you, every day God lets me have is a greatly appreciated gift. Feel like I've died and been reborn several times already. Sorta feel like that every time I wake up from sleep, no matter what shape I'm in. When the Big Jump comes, I figure it won't be as hard as some I've already experienced. But I'll gladly wait a long time.

538 Good Morning Morons. Today is Friday, September 16, 2016. On this day in 1920 a bomb in a horse wagon exploded on Wall Street in front of the J. P. Morgan building in New York City killing 38 and injuring 400. This bombing was never solved but NYC police thought it was carried out the Galleanists, a group of Italian communist anarchists, who had been responsible for a series of bombings the previous year.

Organizers say the reason is black people don't like camping. (Strangely I've never noticed that in our cub scout camping events but we are bitter clingers so what would I know about it?) Maybe it is the $1200 ticket prices? Or maybe blacks don't like being around smug white liberals any more than bitter clingers do? Or, that she is going to expand her credit card thefts and just auto-charge every card in America for $25 on the presumption the owners would really want to give if they were asked, so lets skip to the next step and save everyone some time.

A really creative Hillary campaign could be intriguingly criminal. Who really knows what they're capable of, when desperate.

607 hillary has been counting on being the first female President in the History of the Country and it will be enough for me just to see her denied that, no matter how many dumb things Trump does in Office.

This x 1000. And for me, the icing on the cake will be the big, steaming hot plate of crow a few of the more offensive NeverTrumpers around here will have to eat.

612 RCP polling average would have you believe New Hampshire is still very pro-Hillary, despite her collapse elsewhere, but when you look at the actual polls you realize there are only three polls they are currently counting and one is from August and the other two are from very early in September.

The point is, I guess, polls are snapshots of what was true some time ago and not what might be true right now. More frequent polling can help, but I bet you New Hampshire is not nearly the Hillary state those old polls would have you think.

614 I have about had it with the #NeverTrump people, some of whom reside here.

When pollsters first started polling Trump vs. hillary showing Trump in the lead they told me that you can't trust National polls and the only polls that counted were the State Battleground polls which showed hillary crushing Trump at that time.

Next it was Trump will never break 30% and hillary will have it in the bag by Labor Day with a double digit lead over Trump. Then it was he will never break 40%. Now that he has done that in a few polls, they have motorized the goalposts and said he can't get to 50%.

Soon it was you can't trust random adult polls because those showed Trump in the lead, you could only trust polls of Registered Voters. That morphed into you can only trust polls of Likely Voters because hillary was losing ground yet again.

Now that almost every poll using Likely voters shows Trump in the lead or within the MOE and crushing hillary in key battleground States they are telling me you can't trust any poll except the one that happens election day.

I am beginning to think that the #NeverTrump people aren't really against Trump, they are in the bag for hillary and have always have been.

They've learned to monetize failure. The PACmen, party committee types, and consultant-industrial complex rake in the money when campaigns are lost, as they then start promising to "fight" and saying that they need money to do so.

Then they roll over and wave the white flag at the first opportunity, and start passing around the hat for even more money to "oppose" the issue.

We need a new party and a new brand. The new brand thing is important, since the conservative brand has been tarnished by their actions. A lot of the fraudulent surrender monkeys, of course, claim to be virtuous conservatives.

I'd say that since globalism and anti-americanism are now the status quo, and we have no interest in maintaining that, that we are no longer conservatives. We are now the radicals. Let's start acting like it.

659 Noonan's latest column revisits an oldie but goodie, the Travel Office scandal Hillary created once upon a time. You'll recall Hill had a bunch of people fired, so she could give their jobs to supporters. When there was an outcry, Hillary decided to have the FBI start investigating the poor fired schmucks for "criminal violations" (which never amounted to anything, but must have terrified them and their families), to justify herself to the press.

This is what Hilly does. She's always been despicable.

He's just admitting that we've gotten to this point. The ideal of a small, representative government instead of a centralized monster that rules them will never die...

But "conservatism" as it is today has nothing to do with that anymore. If it's to experience a rebirth, we have to admit this, divorce ourselves from the false conservatives, and start again.
