Overnight Open Thread 7/1/16 (tmi3rd)

Good evening once again, Morons and Moronettes, and hello from the slightly bored AoSHQ Weather Desk. I'm tmi3rd, and I'll be filling in for CDR M tonight, as the real world intrudes yet again. Plenty of stuff to talk about, so let's get to it!

Head below the fold...

Flags_USA_Canada.jpg

The sun is setting on Canada Day, and our neighbors to the north tend to be better at having our back than many of our allies. It's worth mentioning that we've sucked at having our allies' back in the last decade or so, but either way, there are a lot of Canadian Morons and Moronettes, and thanks for being our friends, guys. When we get an administration worth a shit in the future, hopefully, we can repay you for your patience over the last several years.

So here's the unofficial Canadian anthem:

tmi3rd On Elitism

So Chris Arnade has a very good piece in Medium on why Trump voters are not idiots.

Frustrated with broken promises, they gave up on the knowable and went with the unknowable. They chose Trump, because he comes with a very high distribution. A high volatility. (He also signals in ugly ways, that he might just move them, and only them and their friends, higher with his stated policies).

As any trader will tell you, if you are stuck lower, you want volatility, uncertainty. No matter how it comes. Put another way. Your downside is flat, your upside isn’t. Break the system.

The elites loathe volatility. Because, the upside is limited, but the downside isn’t. In option language, they are in the money.

To put it in very non-geeky language: A two-tiered system has one set of people who want to keep the system, and another that doesn’t. Each one is voting for their own best interests.

So the piece makes some good points. I'd like to add a few...

First of all, as a New Orleanian, going back to the storm in 2005, one of the things that really jumped out was the frustration with rank incompetence in government. Largely, people don't mind self-appointed elites running the show, until their incompetence directly affects them.

Predictably, the media ran cover for their protected party and made it look like it was purely a federal failing, but it cost Kathleen Blanco her job (thank God), and gave political cover for Ray Nagin (whom I used to work for) to be prosecuted.

What I see on a regular basis coming out of academia and media (as a reminder, I'm a veteran of NBC, CBS, and CNN) is a willingness to overlook utter incompetence in return for political reliability (evoking painful memories of the structure of the USSR). This isn't just in politics, but in broadcasting and in teaching as well.

Would you send your kids to Mizzou today? Or Yale? Or Northern Colorado?

And hell- read the ticker at the bottom of the news channels. They're spelled and phrased like a three-year-old wrote them. Read some of the garbage that gets put out for peer review in many fields of academia. For a good laugh, follow New Real Peer Review on Twitter... it's hilarious, other than the fact that these are articles that made it into peer-reviewed journals as actual "science".

How did these folks writing this crap pass freshman English, let alone defend their excuses for critical thinking?

So, as a veteran of media, of academia, and a few other things, I always thought it was my duty, because of the privilege of working in those lines of work, to justify my existence by not only working hard, but working well.

And I'm here to tell you, there are a lot of people who've entered that class by birth, not by achievement, and that's the problem- the Kardashian-Hilton approach to prosperity.

To my way of thinking, one of the key elements of the culture that dearly needs to be remade is the willingness to accept mediocrity from people who profess to be on a higher plane than us, regardless of their politics. If they work hard and well, I'm willing to give them a shot. And yeah, the media's going to try to pick our candidates as their hold on culture deteriorates. But the way to attack them is by demanding better of the people who teach our kids, and to get after media and politicians for their daily doses of stupid.

Here's an example of Iowahawk and Tim Blair just UNLOADING on a navel-gazing British academic, via Patterico.

Now, with that said- the other side gives us plenty of examples; let's not excuse anything similar from our side.

Okay, enough from me on that. Let's have some fun.

Chariots of Fur

I do a lot of Bugs Bunny, but I've sorely neglected Wile E. Coyote (who appears to be advising higher GOP election strategy) and the Road Runner.

As a psychiatrist, I diagnose mental illness. And, sometimes, demonic possession."

One of the things that makes Neil DeGrasse Tyson's nonsensical Rationalia governmental idea so utterly farcical is that there are some things that science just can't explain, no matter how hard we might wish it were otherwise.

In medicine, something we can't account for is the impact of the spiritual side on the mind. We can sort of describe it, but as a doc-in-training, there's no science for it, because how would you begin to measure it? Yet there's definitely something there, no matter how much some of my colleagues may try to deny it.

I’m a man of science and a lover of history; after studying the classics at Princeton, I trained in psychiatry at Yale and in psychoanalysis at Columbia. That background is why a Catholic priest had asked my professional opinion, which I offered pro bono, about whether this woman was suffering from a mental disorder. This was at the height of the national panic about Satanism. (In a case that helped induce the hysteria, Virginia McMartin and others had recently been charged with alleged Satanic ritual abuse at a Los Angeles preschool; the charges were later dropped.) So I was inclined to skepticism. But my subject’s behavior exceeded what I could explain with my training. She could tell some people their secret weaknesses, such as undue pride. She knew how individuals she’d never known had died, including my mother and her fatal case of ovarian cancer. Six people later vouched to me that, during her exorcisms, they heard her speaking multiple languages, including Latin, completely unfamiliar to her outside of her trances. This was not psychosis; it was what I can only describe as paranormal ability. I concluded that she was possessed. Much later, she permitted me to tell her story.

The priest who had asked for my opinion of this bizarre case was the most experienced exorcist in the country at the time, an erudite and sensible man. I had told him that, even as a practicing Catholic, I wasn’t likely to go in for a lot of hocus-pocus. “Well,” he replied, “unless we thought you were not easily fooled, we would hardly have wanted you to assist us.”

Your mileage may vary, but one of the things that says a lot to me about the competence of my colleagues is how willing they are to acknowledge that there are things that we- and they- and I- don't know. I'm scared of anyone who claims to have all the answers, and Dr. Gallagher in the piece above is someone I already have a lot of trust in.

Hat tip to Father Erik.

Words defy. And it gets better, if that's possible...

Tonight's musical selection, from the rock side...

I may have used this before, but it seems appropriate given the evening's discussion. Jonathan Mover has been the tour drummer for Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, and this is a composition he did with a side project called "Three Little Pigs" (whose lineup I can't find).

It's called "Put Up Or Shut Up".

Let's leave you with some very NSFW (language and content) Sam Kinison...

As ever, my friends, thanks so much for reading, and I hope you enjoyed reading as much as I enjoyed writing it for you. It's a privilege to write for you, and I'm grateful.

Have a VERY safe and happy Fourth Of July, and by all means, come find me on Twitter if you need me! I'll be around some this evening.

20 Yeah, I don't know any psychiatrist who isn't in one manner or another, crazy him or herself, and I know many.

Dr. Gallagher is a quack. He's a quack because he doesn't recognize the boundaries of his profession, not because he believes there are things that science cannot explain.

Of course there are things science cannot explain. And when he encounters it, he should leave it to someone else. He has no more business entering the spiritual realm than a chaplain does trying to practice psychiatry.

21 As someone who dug out of horrendous piles of cherry laurel after Ivan just the year before, I have to admit I watched Katrina and aftermath in stunned disbelief. My first point of incredulity was that there was anyone still there when Katrina came in. New Orleans is officially 19 feet below sea level. What did people think was going to happen?

After that... well. As I said, we dug ourselves out of Ivan's wreckage. About all my family got from the gov't was a few bags of ice, three or four days later. (They were very much appreciated, yes, given power didn't come back to our area for almost 2 weeks.) The fact that in Katrina people were screaming on TV for someone to come give them food, clothing, and shelter just boggled my mind.

Yet that's more and more the flavor of what we see these days; the media focuses on "why isn't the government fixing this" and not on "hey, we're the people here, why aren't _we_ fixing this?"

54 Regarding New Orleans. It's built on unconsolidated sediment of the Mississippi River, basically mud, and some sand and silt.

Here's what you do to save the city: drill test bores all over the city, and locate formations that will readily fracture horizontally if you pump mud into them.

Then use pile drivers to drive down steel sheets however far is needed to reach those zones, and a little beyond. Make a ring or hexagon of steel wall around each neighborhood. Then drill down to the previously-identified layer and pump in mud and sand, and let it raise the whole neighborhood up like a piston in a cylinder. The process is called "mud-jacking", and it works. Sure, there might be damage to some buildings because of differential rising. Tough. Deal with it.

Do one neighborhood, and move on to the next. Would play hell with roads, streetcars, and underground utilities, but careful planning could minimize disruptions. Jack each section up to 10 feet above the 100-year high water mark.

Her husband didn't listen - and it paid off to the tune of $169 million.

Mega Millions winner Nancy Viola asked her husband, Vito Viola , an NYPD sergeant, to buy Powerball tickets from the 2520 Foodmart in the Willowbrook section of Staten Island on Jan. 8. She had the Powerball fever that was gripping the country.

Because the jackpot was $900 million, she said. It was big. It was all everybody was talking about. He didn't listen.

Instead, her husband used a leftover dollar to buy a Quick Pick for the Mega Millions, 11, 39, 51, 57, and 75, with Mega Ball 2.

That was a good thing, a beaming Viola said Thursday as she stood next to a giant check.

The car's first 170k miles were mostly in San Diego, CA and surrounding areas, till he moved to Florida. Nary a spot of rust on it, out West.

The motor and 4 speed manual though, were just as smooth as ever. But the car was Orlando-ing out into oxide around the running gear.

Hell, a color photo of a car will rust in Orlando.

104 "My first point of incredulity was that there was anyone still there when
Katrina came in. New Orleans is officially 19 feet below sea level.
What did people think was going to happen?"

Here's the deal with one subgroup of the city's inhabitants:

New Orleans has traditionally had a damned big junkie population relative to its comparatively small size. It's a heroin nexus going back many generations. And those junkies often don't go places. All they want and need is right there in NOLA.

When they heard the evacuation order, they thought two things.

(a) Where are they going to line up a fix? They don't have any trusted connections anywhere outside of the city.

(b) You know, there are probably going to be some Grade A pharmacy looting opportunities with the city emptied out, the power off, and the police shorthanded.

So they stayed put.

105 In regards to the aftermath of Katrina, Ray Nagin, etc.

Contrast the behavior of the people of NO, particularly with the officials and their utter lack of preparedness to the people of WV.

That's right, we stopped hearing anything about what WV is dealing with right now, haven't we. Nothing to see here, no screaming cannibals in the Dome, no rapes in the shelters, no blaming President Obama for causing the floods, or the FEMA director for not having trailers, cars, and catered four star meals available to the populace six hours after the floods passed.

No, the people of WV are helping each other. The Greenbrier Resort is actually housing people that have lost their homes and needed temporary shelter. Every community has had one of their own service organizations set up to help residents with drinking water, food, phones, internet service, etc. Neighbors with pick up trucks have gone in to help move debris out to clear roads, to get people back to their homes to salvage what they can, etc.

There are still three women missing from the floods, their photos and family contact information is posted by their neighbors on facebook. Lost pets are being taken in by those whose homes were not damaged, cared for and their owners being sought online.

Boy scouts, football teams etc. have all showed up to start cleaning up their schools, their churches and their neighborhoods.

WV gov. has been going to each community to find out what they need and make sure the National Guard is onsite where needed. Temporary bridges have been built already over small streams, roads are slowly being reopened as they can be shored up.

But, yes, I forgot, WV is nothing but a bunch of illiterate hillbillies......

If this car was sitting in a field corrosion of all the electrical connections in the starter system should be checked. Did you check all the starters you've pulled after you removed them? Sometimes doing the replacement will partially fix a connection. Finally did they fry electrically or mechanically.

Yay! I actually (and accurately) remembered something from my 79 Ford Mustang fiasco! Son-of-a-bitch went through a water pump, 3 starters, a ring-gear, two carbs, a transmission, and it ate valve-cover gaskets like candy because the Ford geniuses made the valve covers with vastly different thermal expansion characteristics than the heads they bolted onto....plus, it handled like crap and ate tires until I found a shop that explained that the factory-specified toe-in was utter bullshit and that it'd handle better and tires would last normally if it were set to dead-nuts true.

Pinto and Bobcat were clones. Capri was from Ford of Germany, but some engine models were the same, not the V6, which was German-made.

If your problem is, the starter spins, but doesn't crank the engine, then my previous post will help. If the starter engages, but stalls, then either your engine is exceedingly stiff, or it's not getting enough juice. Be sure the battery negative cable is grounded securely to the engine block.

If installing a new or rebuilt starter, coat the pinion teeth with layout dye, or even a blue Sharpie pen. Run it once, remove it again, and see how much of the ink has worn off. That will tell you if the starter pinion is engaging deep enough in the teeth of the ring gear to do its job properly.

It is only "in theory", eventually reciprocal. They are leftists, fellow travelers to the current US government, and figure that (a) if they hurt people badly enough fast enough, any counterattacks will be by disabled people; and (b) where they get slow police response times on their attacks, the police will aggressively and swiftly punish those doing counterattacks.

161 As I recall, the German made Capri exited the scene quietly, whereupon a few years later, Mercury rebranded the then extant "Bobcat", with the supposedly more upscale "Capri" moniker.

Which fooled absolutely no one.

Point is, the very last couple years of "Capri" really were Pinto clones, even though us olde fartes know the "Capri" as a small, pseudo Mustang, euro-viewpoint "Pony Car".

At least, that's how they tried to make the German Capri's sheetmetal look in terms of proportion and line.

Not a bad car in it's own right, but like all American manufacturers in the '70s, Ford didn't have a single bloody damn clue as how to market a tight-handling, tailored package of a euro-sport coupe.

So, they let the overstuffed geezers in the Mercury dealerships make a failure of it.

We'd see the same damn abject cluelessness thing a decade or so later, with the Merkur XT4-i.

And he said, "You know Kyle, quantitative easing only works when you're the only country doing it." He would never say that publicly. And I'll protect his name, because it was a private meeting. But it was one of those moments where I...it was one of those epiphanies almost, where it's something you and I knew, but hearing him say it, call it one of the four top central bankers in the world, it was a jarring experience for me, because when I look around the world today, everyone's in the same boat. So we're all trying...we're attempting through our treasury and our Fed to get the rest of the world to not devalue against us, while we quietly attempt to devalue ourselves against them, and it's all this...it is the race to the bottom, it is the beggar thy neighbor policies that we all talk about. It was crap....but so fun. I loved that dribbling piece of shit. Drove it all over NE Oklahoma, and even had a farmer drag it out of his muddy field once with a tractor. I was pretty sure five dollars in gas back then would have gotten us most of the way to California.

T-boned it on a chevy that turned right in front of me one morning. I got 800 dollars from that...and bought a spiffing used '72 Ford LTD. It wasn't nearly as much fun.

About 40 years ago, I was in Paris for Bastille Day, walking in the part that leads up to and goes under the Eiffel Tower. Off in the distance, there is an old grandfatherly-type, in a coat, puffing on a cigar, with a box under his arm -- and he's got an excited young man of about four years of age. He gets to a park bench, puts the box on the ground, and sits down.

As this little drama is going on, I'm walking closer and closer.....so I see the young lad select a little blob out of the box and run over to his grandfather holding it out. Without taking the blob out of the youngster's hand, the gentleman takes a drag from the cigar and touches it to the blob, whereupon the kid takes about three steps and throws it into the air.

Where it explodes with a concussion I could feel in my chest. "Holy shit," I'm thinking, "that came dangerously close to blowing the kid's arm into pink mist." Whereupon the boy bounced and clapped for a while, then ran back to the box for another. My next thought was, "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas any more....."

Something to remember this 4th.

The country that flourished and produced the most exceptional place and people on this planet is still here.

Under the filth and perversion the bedrock exists. It can't ever be denied or hidden very long, it's there, immutable.

By the efforts of people like us here, it will reemerge in due time.

Not going to be easy, there'll be heartbreak along the way.

I likely won't live to see that emergence, but I have complete faith that it will happen.

We'll prevail because we are Americans, thus we're denied the option of failure. Look through our history for proof of that.

So NEVER despair or be ashamed of your land. Shame lies on the shoulders of those who would harm her.

So Gov. Moonbeam signed into law in CA today a ten round limit on
magazines. Possessing one capable of more rounds and you are a criminal.

Also, someone explain to me how you background check someone buying a
box of .22s.? And so what. Is it illegal to buy ammunition if you are
on the no fly list or have been convicted of a crime with a one year or
more jail penalty?

Imagine the line at Cabelas or Walmart to buy a box of shotgun shells. All waiting for their background check.

I also didn't know that CA currently restricts people from buying more than one handgun a month.

How in the hell does this stuff not be struck down in court?

221 What Tyson is advocating has a name, Scientism. It's the belief that science is the be all and end all of the human condition. It's a laughable joke. There are many, many things that politics must deal with that are not science, and science has no business addressing them.

To go that route results in the most abusive tyrannies the world has ever known.

I guess the big thing to say about it is that science is not about value judgments, what is good and bad. For example, science can say, if X then Y. It cannot say Y is bad or good. Someone might think Y is terrible, so therefore we shouldn't do X. But then on the other hand, there are those who dig X and don't mind a little Y to come along.

The people are always making that little oversight. They start out as a given that Y is bad, and argue how stupid one is for not seeing that X surely causes Y. Science has nothing to say about how we should value Y or X.

These are now illegal? How do you make a 1911 legal to own in CA? How do you drop a magazine out of it?

Posted by: Jen the original at July 01, 2016 11:54 PM (HbTvc)

227 Units are just a crutch anyway. They're a very needed crutch and one that is therefore burned into every STEM student, and for very good reason. However, they are not really needed. The Universe itself, God if you will, has chosen the inherent scale of "stuff" in this universe and the relations between them.

You can simply go with that flow and find distance, time, mass, electric charge, and the others you need, are related through the prime physical law and the scale of each has been thus set.

They can be called Planck units, or God's units, if you prefer. And they aren't really units.

That statement will probably go against everything a young even advanced STEM type holds dear. However, he simply hasn't gone deep enough. :-)

IIRC, they ban rifles that can accept a magazine larger than 10. A "bullet button" basically legally transformed the rifle to one with a fixed magazine because you needed a tool (e.g. a bullet) to remove the "fixed magazine".

The new Calif. law does away with such "bullet button" mechanisms.

The bullet button was a magazine release that couldn't be depressed with a finger, but could be depressed with a pointed object such as a finger. This allowed people to get around the restriction on 30-round magazines for their AR-15s since it wasn't technically a "detachable magazine" under the law.

That's where the college system has failed. The whole purpose of universities was to turn out people who were widely educated in a broad subject of topics. Basically, creating renaissance men. Now, the education they get in everything but their core topic is so watered down and full of lefty propaganda that it's basically worthless. A mathematician will still learn good math, an engineer will still learn how to build things, but everything else is garbage.

So why do we still need the high schools and college system if, instead of turning out well-rounded adults, they're turning out hyper-specialists who are utterly useless outside of a narrow field? The case can definitely be made for education reform on these grounds.

Gars are large, primitive, freshwater piscivore fish. They're shaped sort of like logs with tiny flippers and tend to be about 25% mouth with lots of teeth. One version found in the Mississippi is known as an "alligator gar" -- it should be known that there are real, actual alligators to compare them to nearabouts.

That said, I have no idea if you eat them, or just catch 'em to keep them from eating everything else in your lake/river.

It succinctly sums up the state of affairs in this, (Marvelous, it really is) Country when the Media afterthoughts a concrete example of the "Can Do" attitude that Built this Nation.

I've seen it EVERY DAY. We, literally, give others the shirts off our backs, because they've lost everything and we haven't. We give em a place to stay, because we have one and they lost their homes. It's been the Rule, not the exception. They're one of US. I cannot explain WHY that happens. It just does. I reckon Montani Semper Liberi runs strong even now.

As OUR Country gears up to celebrate INDEPENDENCE Day, I consider myself fortunate to be surrounded by those that epitomize the Spirit that gave US the Greatest Country On Earth.

278 All Hail Eris, thanks!! I think this will work:

Okay, let me try posting this entire POS post from Wells and Hollywood Elsewhere.

"Hinterland Nihilists"

My discovery is late by a month, but this 5.30 piece by photographer & Guardian contributor Chris Arnade (link at site) offers the most concise and illuminating explanation of the moronic mentality of your average downscale Trump voter that I've read thus far.

The hinterlanders have basically become Pvt. Gomer Pyle in Full Metal Jacket, living in what they feel is a world of shit. They've stopped being reasonable, they don't believe in positivism or constructive solutions, they drink a lot and they're holding a loaded gun in their hands and telling themselves that things are so bad -- stuck, no hope, no future -- that pulling the trigger couldn't make things any worse, and it might just make them better.

Arnade: As any trader will tell you, if you are stuck lower, you want volatility, uncertainty. No matter how it comes. Put another way, your downside is flat but your upside isnt. Break the system.

Seven Arnade paragraphs and Wells comments:

(1) Large parts of the U.S. have become completely isolated, socially and economically. Kids are growing up in towns where by six, seven, or eleven, they are doomed to be viewed as second class. They feel unvalued. They feel stuck. They are mocked. And there is nothing they feel they can do about it.

Wells comment: There's at least a possibility of a way out for under-30s through self-education. Higher learning and all kinds of unforeseen creativity via the internet is free. They don't need college. And the more they listen to their out-of-work dad or mom or uncle, the more fucked they'll be. Leave them behind. Their future is mapped out for them, but it isn't for people who believe in tomorrow. They can do anything or at least die trying.

(2) When they turn to religion for worth, they are seen by the elites as uneducated, irrational, clowns. When they turn to identity through race they are racists, regardless of their color.

Wells comment: For the 678th time, religion has always been founded upon ignorance and superstition, and 35 or so years ago Christianity was hijacked by the right. I hate to break it to you, Gomer, but Jesus doesn't believe in AR-15s. And the more you repeat slogans like diversity is a code word for white genocide, the more behind the eight ball you'll be. Do you wanna stay in that hole you're in, or do you want to climb out?

(3) The only thing they feel they can do is break the fucking system. And they are going to try. Either by Trump or by some other way.

Wells comment: Brilliant!

(4) Voters in the lower tier want to move to the higher tier. For African-Americans that means supporting the Clintons, who have spent 40 years working to convince African-Americans they will work for them, socially and economically. They may not like where they start, but Hillary is clearly working for them.

Wells comment: Check.

(5) Many working class whites presently don't feel they have that. In the past they voted the same as elite Republicans, who they saw as sharing their values and would move them higher.

Wells comment: Dubya and Dick Cheney share my dogpatch values! God, what a bunch of dumb-asses!

(6) That hasn't happened. Economically or socially. The bailout of Wall Street (and in their view, acquiescence on social issues like gay marriage) was the final blow.

Wells comment: You're shattered by the Wall Street bailout, and so you're voting for the biggest, richest, most obnoxiously me-me-me guy who ever ran for President; a selfish, swaggering buffoon who's putting on an act so you'll vote for him, and you're dumb enough to do that? You know what? You deserve to live in pain. Your lethargy is warranted. Pop another Oxycontin.

(6) Frustrated with broken promises, they gave up on the knowable and went with the unknowable. They chose Trump because he comes with a very high distribution. A high volatility. He also signals, in ugly ways, that he might just move them, and only them and their friends, higher with his stated policies.

Wells comment: If there's a God, things will only get worse for you guys. Here's hoping.

Schools aren't about the kids, they are about the teachers and administrators jobs.

In 1980, total education spending in the US was $152B with a population of 226 million,

In 1990, total education spending in the US was $305B with a population of 249 million.

In 2000, total education spending in the US was $557B with a population of 281 million.

In 2010, total education spending in the US was $921B with a population of 309 million.

In 2016, total education spending in the US is forecast to be $1.03T with a population of 325 million.

Population has grown by 50%, education spending has grown 660%.

That money isn't going for books for the kids, it's going for more administrators and teachers' salaries.

I spent a summer in Bull Shoals AR and learned a bit about alligator gar as told by fishermen.
People do eat them. They didn't use hooks to catch them as it tended not to penetrate their snouts. Something resembling dental floss was used to snag their teeth and bring them up.
At that point some chose to club them with a cut down bat . Problem was that even when clubbed like crazy, sometimes they still weren't dead. The gar would "wake up" and start fighting while in the boat. I saw multiple newspaper clippings where fisherman had been bitten in those situations.
It was not unusual to hear a single gunshot at times. Some gar fishermen carried snub-nosed .38s and would use that to put one down just to be safe. No, they didn't do it in the boat per se.

I also kind of want some people here to go over there and give him a hard time... but can understand if people don't want to, and the POV that that's not helpful either.

IMHO a great glimmer of hope came last week with the defeat of the SJW administration at UC Irvine. I know I keep flogging that, but (a) these are young people we're talking about, they have good futures; (b) and they can teach others how to fight.

I've fished for them like that. Used frayed nylon cord with a hook for bait. I've never caught one big enough for a club. The biggest I've managed is a four footer. They are fascinating fish. They have an air bladder they can use to "gulp" air when the oxygen content of the water is low, and their scales are like tooth enamel. They are good to eat, but like I said earlier, they are tough to clean. I tend to avoid a fish you have to chop with a hatchet to get through the scales. Popular fish with bow fishermen too because they float at the surface.

We picked and shucked corn, beans, berries, fruits, gathered eggs, fished in the lake, etc. We did see or was told what effort had been put in to make this all available, tho. In Texas it was more like, "Let's see what we ca find."

This is true, but I figured it was easier to take a simple win than to force a more complicated rout. The best thing for education would be a Constitutional Amendment that said, "there shall be NO Federal involvement in Education." Same for Agriculture, Energy, the Environment, Commerce, Healthcare, Land Management, Land Ownership, Parks, Airline Security.....

Cram 'em back down into Article 1, Section 8, and they might be worth half a shit. Right now, they're six fathoms lower.

I'd suggest looking at their core belief, mainly that White people are defined as racist (just as men are defined as sexist, straight people defined as homophobes, &c.), and that all racists (and thus White people) are evil morally impure oppressors. Thus, being in opposition to that "morally impure oppression" is defined axiomatically as "justice".

Thus "oppression" and "justice" are not defined by what one does, but by which side their on.

An understanding of "intersectional" hierarchies and "kyriarchy" takes it to another level.

They are very ancient from an evolutionary viewpoint -- they have diamond-shaped scales that are more primitive than sharks'. And, as far as "what did it ever do to you?" -- they tend to look dead for quite a long time, then wake up and sink their teeth into the nearest object. If you don't want that to happen to your leg, you take affirmative steps to ensure that it looks dead because it *IS* dead.

Sharks don't really have scales. Their skin has a sandpapery texture. And their kidneys are not very efficient; there's a high level of urea in their flesh as a result. But the meat is quite tasty if first marinated in lemon juice to neutralize the urea.

Sharks, like gars, have non-overlapping scales. Sharks' scales are like little teeth -- their skin has been historically used like sandpaper. Gars' scales are just little flat diamonds -- they act more like body armor. Regular fish's scales are little overlapping plates attached at the front, which allows them to be more lightweight while being just as protective and more flexible.

Those dates are the "high point" of the Baby Boomers in school, which would be 1970, and 1983 which would be the year that the next generation graduated from high school. So at that point, the number of kids in schools had started to fall.

And I don't see sheriffs as being warlords anywhere but ganged-out wastelands....because the suburbs are terra incognita. They don't spend enough time in quiet cul-de-sacs to know the lay of the land, and many are stuffed with folks to whom warlords are anathema.

A concervative is one who wished to conserve this civilization.

As to what "conservative" means, I will suggest a few good reads:

The works of Edmund Burke

"Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" by James FitzJames Stephens

"The Conservative Intellectual Movement in America" by George H. Nash

"The Great Debate: Edmund Burke, Thomas Paine, and the Birth of Right and Left " by Yuval Levin

and

"Inventing Freedom: How the English-Speaking Peoples Made the Modern World" by Daniel Hannan

Also, some comentary by yours truely from three or so years ago:

They are merely what their state-financed education indoctrination made them. It's not like they had parents. Your taxpayer dollars made them this way.

The "religious right" arose in the '70's because of Roe vs. Wade, and similar shenanigans.

The most disturbing part of the entire video is when the reporter giving the interview is stammers trying to find a ideologically acceptible weasel-word but can't think of anything so accurately describes events by saying "Attacked them" and the crazy lady just has a blank look on her face, the literal reality of what happened passes right over her head. 466 I find Neil DeGrasse Tyson very likable. I think between the excruciatingly loathsome Bill Nigh and Neil DeGrasse Tyson we are lucky to have him stealing the spotlight. This sort of populist science archetype is always going to be a leftist and champion lefty "science" causes, I choose not to hold it against him.

On a side note, I recommend neal stephenson's book "Seveneves." The main character is basically a renamed Neil DeGrasse, and the author writes his point of view extremely well. It's a good example of creating both a public persona and a private one.

467 Greetings:

And Re: Freshman English

Back in '93, I went back to college to get another bit of education and another B.A. I was a self-supporting adult at that point, having gotten my first B.A. back in '76, so I was on a tight two-year schedule. I just wanted to take the technical courses, so I bumped up against the school's English Comp requirement.

So, I pulled together a bunch of my professional and technical writings and made an appointment with my "Guidance Counselor" to see if I could have the English Professor Full Employment Requirement waived. After doing a rather cursory review of my materials, the counselor shook her head kind of professorially and said, "Sorry, but we can't have you graduate with knowing how to write."

My reply was, "Well then, things have certainly changed. The last time I went to college you didn't get admitted if you didn't know how to write."

Posted by: 11B40 at July 02, 2016 11:02 AM (evgyj)

468 49 - Go you guys, why wait for a gov't to fix things?

104 - Facepalm. Okay, so they really didn't have sense enough to get out of the rain, so to speak. Somehow, not surprised.

105 - Amazing how much attention you don't get when you're not on the liberal coasts.

And as for Freshmen English.... One of my main memories from that class is group work which somehow led to a fellow student asking me, "But don't you think most people are inherently good?" With the horrified tone of, how could anyone think anything else?

My reply, "No, I think most people are inherently evil, and the ones who haven't done something truly horrible haven't had the right opportunity yet."

....And that, in a nutshell, is why I'll never trust big government. I wonder if that's why they do?
