Overnight Open Thread 6/18/16 (tmi3rd)

Hi, everybody. Once again, I'm tmi3rd,and I'll be filling in one more night for CDR M, who is off with his meatspace gig again. He hopes to return tomorrow night.

And I didn't forget Caturday, this time.

More below the fold:

What I think CDR M actually does:

via GIPHY

What it's probably actually like:

Well, this pisses me off.

Radiohead held a worldwide streaming event to celebrate A Moon Shaped Pool’s physical release today. Record stores all over the world participated, but an unfortunate incident unfolded at one shop in Instanbul. According to Turkish news, patrons in record store Velvet Indieground were attacked by a group of men who were angry that they were drinking alcohol and playing music during Ramadan. Things reportedly turned violent, and a Periscope video has surfaced in which you can hear a commotion outside the store. You cannot see much of the altercation but there are some chilling sounds and reactions.

Thanks to Greg Gutfeld for the link.

I really wonder how long western Europe has left. They weren't good at acknowledging the threat they faced when it was the Soviet Union. Now they're ignoring the obvious threat within their own borders.

"Americans Are Sometimes Collateral Damage"

I won't link Jeffrey Goldberg's execrable piece at the Atlantic (the link goes to Taranto's annihilation of it at the WSJ- anyone know how to get around the paywall?), but here's the key quote:

Obama believes that the clash is taking place within a single civilization, and that Americans are sometimes collateral damage in this fight between Muslim modernizers and Muslim fundamentalists.

One: Words fail me when it comes to describing the depths of Obama's reprehensible nature (I only use these terms because I don't want to diminish my own argument with a barrage of profanities),to say nothing of his disgusting, self-hating lapdog Jeffrey Goldberg.

Two: A nation's only vital interest is its citizens, and, by extension, defending them from hostile action by its enemies.

So let me once again address our LGBT friends, who may be politically opposed to us: The administration (and its possible successors) DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU.

I implore you, my LGBT countrymen, to give us a chance. Stand with us; let us stand with you. I'm not going to sit here and pretend to you we're going to agree with you on everything; we're not. Nor will you agree with us on everything.

However, the administration regards you as less important than murderous, gay-hating (not just homophobic, but GAY-HATING) barbarians who mean you harm.

You are NOT expendable to us on the right. We may passionately disagree with you on many things, but you're AMERICANS. As such, we stand with you against those who mean you harm.

So please- come to us. Let us help; let us train you; let us assist you in taking the reins in the defense of your very lives. And, for God's sake:

shoot back.jpg

Just to underscore: I'm a practicing Roman Catholic, and trained in both the fighting and healing arts. I would be honored indeed to assist my LGBT brethren in defending against this very real threat.

Which leads us to...

How To Wreck The Republican Party

Andrew Malcolm's piece for McClatchy is somewhat academic at this point, because unless I missed something, the damage is done. The GOP is at best derelict, and at worst disintegrating quickly.

The thing that needs to be contemplated at this point is what to do beyond this point. On the state level, I'm pretty impressed with the GOP, to be honest with you... there have been genuine conservative advances at the state level. It's at the national level that the GOP has been overrun with charlatans and statists, and I don't know how you fix that. What complicates things further is this Nate Silver chart that shows Gary Johnson pulling support from Trump in red Midwestern states:

fivethirtyeight.jpg

Look at where that comes from- Midwest and Mountain West states.

And I don't have ANY idea how you work this out.

Okay, enough of this sad shit. Let's have some fun:

Obligatory Caturday stuff:

With extra Dalmatian action.

Dog counterforce:

On to the music...

If any of you were skateboarding in the 80s and 90s- and particularly Powell Peralta fans- this might take you back:

We talked about Robben Ford last night, so...

Over in the land of bass, Mark Egan is just amazing:

Now, a little more of my studying music...

And, finally, tonight's cartoon selection...

"Hillbilly Hare" remains one of my absolute favorites.

Guys, thanks so much for letting me entertain you this evening, and thanks as well for your very kind words last night. I should be able to hang out a little more this evening, but allow me to close with something:

Every last one of you are very special to all of us with the keys to the place. What makes the AoSHQ Mothership such a special place is the folks in the comments section, and there's not a day that goes by that all of us who write here aren't eternally grateful for all of you. Yeah, we get pissed off at each other here and there, but that's what family does.

Whatever happens going forward, Ace and the rest of us are made better at what we do by you- even if we admittedly are ready to run over the odd one of you with a herd of buffalo at times. Hey, it's the truth.

Love ya, guys. Know it, believe it, and live it.

Come find me on Twitter if you need me!

Thanks,

tmi3rd

All's well here. Had a run in at our local club last night that didn't end in violence on my part.

Idiot lib had a few things to tell me about our troops not being as brave as past fighters, etc. Surprise. He's a Bernie/Hillary supporter retired here from Madison, WI.

12 That onmama has a criminal indifference to Americans is not a surprise. What's surprising is that someone thinks he sides with the "modernizing" version of islam. At least that's what I could gather from the pull quote.

43 Jim, Sunk New Dawn, you were absolutely right about the steroid injections for our cat.

"Convenient" mobile cat vet never warned me about the possibility of cat getting diabetes from the injection for her skin issues.

So, two weeks ago, at 1:30 a.m. my husband is handing me a kitty in the middle of a horrible seizure, who I thought died in my arms. Got her to the vet ER, and she had gone completely blind and was howling horribly.

Next morning, early, I picked her up with instructions to take her to a nearby vet (which was previously owned by a friend of ours), and she had regained most of her vision.

Turns out, the steroids triggered the damned diabetes, and as the steroids wore off, the injections I gave her triggered her nearly deadly seizures.

Ugh.

Really? What freakish sect of RC accepts sexual deviancy?
The Catholic Church teaches that marriage can only be between a man and a woman, and opposes introduction of both civil and religious same-sex marriage The Church also holds that same-sex unions are an unfavorable environment for children and that the legalization of such unions is harmful to society.

So, this asshole I sat next to at the club bar last night, said to me, "I don't understand why ANYONE NEEDS an AR-15????!!!???"

I did look at him calmly, and say, "My husband and I own one. And so does our vet son."

He looked completely pussified and gobsmacked. So he says to me, "Why is the NRA in control of the entire country???!!!!!"

At
that point, I excused myself once again, and went to the ladies' room. I
stopped off on the way back to point the idiot out to some friends at
the bar.

97 Also everyone: I spoke to loved ones today.

It's something that falls under the category of "long-term planning," but my mom turned 77 this year.

Now don't get me wrong; I want her to stick around for a long, long time; my hunch is she'll make 97.

The only thing that frustrates me is, she absolutely does not want to leave SoCal, even despite how bad things are. Mainly because other relatives of mine (i.e. the sister and bro-in-law I've told you about who aren't as sane as my other sister and bro-in-law), don't want to leave... and they have kids who are going on 11 and 15 this year.

Well, I can understand at least sticking around until the younger one is 18. That's seven years and one thing I've learned recently, is that time seems to move faster every year.

But my mom? That's a different story.

Anyhoo-- and again, I want my mom to live a long time-- but me and the sane sister/bro-in-law are talking about which state we want to move to, once my mom finally passes.

I like Nevada and Arizona the best. They seem to like Texas and Montana the best.

So I guess it's almost official that my remaining days in California are numbered, even if it's still probably a big number (and in fairness, that's the way I want it).

Still, can't help what's in store.

Just wanted to share, sorry for the wall of text. :-)

132 Regarding trying to appeal to LGBT liberals, or any regressively politicized faction. You can't get through if the Fundamentals they believe in "explain away" everything you might say.

The ol' saying about a liberal is a conservative who hasn't been mugged yet? We've seen, a-plenty, that's not true - the rape victims who still support immigration of folks from rapist cultures, for example.

There's a Ted talk (yeah yeah)
This is your brain on communication
https://youtu.be/FDhlOovaGrI
with Uri Hasson, who, amusingly, is not very goodly with the English.

Scans show how brains synch up between speaker and listener. Interesting study.

But, at 11:43 he talks about testing subjects who are told a story, about a man trying to locate his wife, but one group was told that the woman had cheated on her husband, the other was told the husband was just jealous. This one sentence stated before the story was told caused entirely different reactions in the two listeners groups. (Vid explains it better than I'm doing, I'm sure.)

It's a big deal to try to overcome preconceptions - they're m/l hardwired and alter all incoming info.

Mrs. Splunge has amused and delighted me on many occasions, but perhaps never so much as the time we went to a celebrated vegetarian/no dairy restaurant with a relative, at his request. Her scowl at the menu was something to behold. You could almost hear the "WHERE is the FOOD??"

Finally she chose something, and picked at it, while muttering under her breath about what SOME people consider to be DINNER. I was trying not to laugh, the whole time.

We ate when we got home.

192 0302-

A good question, deserving of a good answer.

The left is comprised of identity groups who have been convinced- incorrectly- that the All-Powerful Government will take care of them.

Said group just got the hard hammer of reality- they're not important to the government other than their votes, and the government isn't going to come to their aid.

In short, they've been reduced to a commodity.

So along comes tmi3rd and a few other shooters who say "I don't care that your politics are different than mine; you need the tools to defend yourself from people who genuinely want to kill you."

The more folks from said group that have genuine reason to doubt the government and trust their fellow citizens, the more that everyone's rights are protected.

We ain't gonna win 'em all, but this is an opportunity to make a serious dent in the left's death grip on a group of people who are heavily represented in the nation's mouthpieces (remember, I worked in TV for a long time as well). I want as many as possible on our side both strategically and because it's- to me- the right thing to do.

203 Years ago, I had this talk with my cousin, who has been a cop for 30 plus years (now retired). He's pretty conservative in his life and beliefs, but he has also seen a lot of crap on the streets, and how badly people can treat each other.

Basically, what he thought was what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home, behind closed doors, is their business. He really didn't want to pry into someone's life unless their troubles spilled out into the street, and then that became police business.

And he wasn't born a Roman Catholic, but converted when he married his wife of now 30 - plus years.

And one of our uncles was gay, but did not act silly or effeminate (he was a rocked ribbed Republican, loved Reagan). He and his friends always treated our Grandmother like a queen, and always did nice things for here and entertained her. I don't think it ever dawned on her that her son and friends were gay.

I've know a lot of gays over the years. Some were silly, some were interesting, some friendly, some repugnant. They are still human beings, and deserve the protection of the law in leading the life of American citizens.

251 Christians and conservatives may have a first reaction of revulsion towards Gays because of the nature of "relations" between participants. And also because gay relationships are necessarily anti family and thus anti civilization. (can't have a civilization if babies don't get born)

That said most would agree that it's the act that arouses the revulsion and also the militant and in your face attitude.

But, Christians and Conservatives for the most part (there's always a nut job in every crowd) do not approve nor would participate in murder or mayhem towards gays (unless they themselves acted out. Which they have done in churches and other protests).

Our religion and our ethos does not encompass the death of those who don't believe in the same world view as us as long as they don't try to harm us either.

Easy peasy. Islam has no problem tossing gay people off a building to their death or cutting off their heads etc.

So to all you gays. We have some problems and disagreements but if you continue to support leftists such as Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton or some others that I'm sure you know, you're going to be a target for Islam and not one of those on the left gives a shit.

So let's all vote Trump and get that wall built and stop the insane followers of the death cult known as Islam and maybe they'll get the message to stay the hell out of the US.

Then we can go back to fighting among ourselves over bathrooms and pronouns and what not.

And as before, there are some that can't be convinced. But there are plenty out there that are coming around to just how badly they've been used, and are unsure what to do now.

They've been told we're their enemy.

So when Dr. Straight Breeder comes along and says. "hey, look, I don't care that we don't vote for the same people, and I don't care what differences we have, your safety matters to me, and I'd like to help", the reaction is usually one of being stunned, and then curiosity.

308 Jesus said to love your enemies.

He didn't say, "don't have enemies."

And he didn't say, "don't kill your enemies."

You can still love someone and recognize their humanity...just so long as they've dropped their weapons.

309 As to gun ownership; if you haven't committed a felony or beat up your SO then you are no more crazy than anyone else and have a right to purchase a firearm.

That goes for anyone.

Sure there are some groups that could be pointed at and the claim made that they have mental issues and such. But if according to our laws and the medical profession those groups are not considered "insane" or a threat to themselves or others then that's it. I have no problem with them exercising their rights as American citizens.

My personal opinion doesn't enter into it except at the ballot box where I can make my displeasure known (if I have any in ref to that).

That's where the problem comes in is making these statements about who or what can own firearms. It's no better and maybe worse than the stuff leftists say about gun control.

Frankly I think all this back ground stuff is nonsense but it's law now and won't get repealed anytime soon. It does provide a bit of security in that we're not letting known felons and crazy people own firearms.

We still have a problem that will always be there of those who turn bad from being good and who then use the firearms they bought when they were good and use them for bad stuff.

But that can't be helped unless you want such a pernicious and restrictive state that would make most tyrannies to date look like day care.

And frankly maybe the gays joining the 2A band wagon might be a big help to keep the gun grabbers from getting their way.

311 For years, the left has been used to dominating the debate in this country because conservatives have been loathe to engage in the debate because of the typical responses that they will get. Any facts or conservative arguments are labeled as "racist, bigoted, homophobic, evil, or selfish". It appears now that rank and file conservatives are fighting back and are not afraid to enter into the debate. They know what they will be called, and the left's overuse of the terms has caused those words to lose their power.

Except for those in politics, they are still afraid of being called those things for standing up for principals of conservatism. What they haven't realized is that they will be called those things not because they are conservative, but because they are members of the GOP. If they are going to call you that, why worry that you may hurt their feelings by your vote.

Me, I'm starting to fight back more and more. I got called a racist and homophobe on facebook for defending the 2nd Amendment. Their debate points were week, mine were strong, so I am a racist homophobe. Fuck it. They are going to call me that, so what difference does it make? None.

Now when one of them calls me a racist homophobe, I call them a pedo. That really incenses them because they have no idea how to respond to that.

Hey, I spent the last two DECADES of my life working in the performing
arts and media. I've dealt with some extraordinarily hateful gay folks
who wished all kinds of death on me when it emerged that I didn't
believe what they did.

And as before, there are some that can't be convinced. But there are
plenty out there that are coming around to just how badly they've been
used, and are unsure what to do now.

They've been told we're their enemy.

So when Dr. Straight Breeder comes along and says. "hey, look, I
don't care that we don't vote for the same people, and I don't care what
differences we have, your safety matters to me, and I'd like to help",
the reaction is usually one of being stunned, and then curiosity.

If I hadn't had it go well time after time, I wouldn't keep trying.

314 Regarding medicating cats (which is much more fun topic than others being kicked about tonight)...

The old gray female kitteh had something going on around her tail, losing hair off her butt and the tail where it attaches. She was miserable.

Milady started applying something to the spot, and giving her medicine orally. Cat wiggled and objected at first, but in a couple of days must've figured out it worked, because she would come jump in Milady's lap at medication time and cooperated quite nicely. Cat got better, BTW.

Animals, domestic and wild, don't always know what we're doing to them, but it's really neat how, when they figure out we're helping, they get it, and cooperate.

316 I just don't get exercised by homosexuality, and I think pretty much all displays of physical affection in public are juvenile. Some of the best people I know are gay. And an old man I visit with as part of a church outreach is a survivor of a 40 year union, and he's just great. Lonely, but great. The homosexuals I know are great in their communities, work hard as hell and are great neighbors.

Those folks who dislike homosexuality I have no problem with either. I have a problem with people who make it personal. As Bebe said earlier, hate the sin, love the sinner.

I got "gifted" a cat once. He hardly paid me much attention. I fed him and gave him a place to sleep but he wasn't much for affection.

Then one day he got clobbered by a car and left in the gutter. Someone came and got me and I put him on a board (cause I didn't know if he'd broken something internally) and took him to the vet. (He had a big contusion on his head.)

This was at a time when I didn't spend much money on my medical care because of money.

Anyway 2 days later cats okay I pay the bill and take him home.

From that time forward he was very pleased to see me at any time and would jump up on me and sleep in bed with me. He know who'd saved his bacon.

445 I'll probably miss the active gun thread whenever it turns up, so I'll mention this now. This month's issue of American Rifleman has a nice article on the Mosin-Nagent Mod 1891.

Also, a page devoted to the M98 Mauser.

The feature article re 150 Years of Winchester is very interesting. I did not know that Winchester produced M-14's. Hell, I may have carried one.

One that we came-up-with and actually popularized was "The Green Death" -- a shotglass with a layer of 80-proof green creme-de-menthe at the bottom; 100-proof clear peppermint schnapps in the middle; and 151-proof straw-colored Bacardi 151 on top....served near freezing.

It was notable in that your breath improved proportionally to you getting hammered.

Reminds me of my cat when I was growing up. She was very afraid of my Dad. My Dad would constantly mess with her. Nothing serious, just stupid stuff. She didn't like him at all. Then one night, he came home from work, it was raining and he saw our cat under a tree, injured somehow. So he goes over, picks her up gently, takes her to the little cat home (a covered box with various towels inside) and put her inside. He gave her a little pat on the head, said good kitty and went inside. From that point on, He could mess with her all day long and she would just purrrr. My Dad is a very nice man and she knew it now.

Had the experience of exposing our two dogs to a new kitten about 30 years ago -- they did the same "pushing around with their nose" thing. But, then, one very slowly....and very cautiously....and with her eyes looking sideways at us....very deliberately opened her mouth and placed it in position to bite a kitten in half.

It happened so slowly that we didn't really discern the intent until the last minute, and then we clobbered her before she could. And that was 95% of "kitten training".

The sugar wasn't the issue. 80+100+151=331, then divide by 3....this was effectively taking frozen shots of 110-proof alcohol, which your body absorbs immediately upon reaching body temperature -- while not alerting the nose and palate about the incoming. 531 The left wants identity politics and balkanization, not individualization. So let's say fuck the left by dealing with gays and everybody else as individuals, not members of a pet victim group.

This shit will never end otherwise. And, as i said, the gays might be easier to win over than other Dem victim groups, because they are not bitterly clinging to their EBT cards.

This is how I and most on the Right have always treated them. I never used to care, for real. Then, they (a political group, not so much individuals I know) decided that my attitude was not enough. I had to care, and I had to celebrate it.

That is two steps too far for me, sorry. They (again, big general group) do not get to have me approve and celebrate their lifestyle.

If not caring about how they choose to live their life is not enough, I have nothing more to offer them.

Soooo true. Divide and conquer. Maybe liberal constituencies will start to discover that Democrats have a separate message for each of them. "Black people! Here's what I'm going to do for YOU that I'm not going to do for anyone else! Gays! Here's what I'll give YOU that no one else will get! Hispanics, YOUR special presents will be free this and that!"

Conservatives on the other hand have the same message of equal opportunity, personal prosperity, and personal freedom for everyone. Ironically, because they don't have special, separate messages for all these different constituencies, they're called racists and bigots. "No outreach to Blacks! Nothing to say to wimmin! Turning their backs on gays!"

I also agree that gays could be the first to come around, because Democrats haven't yet succeeded in enslaving them to the EBT card. There aren't enough gays to make a significant difference in voting numbers if a large number of them defect, but they have money and attention. My hope is that liberal "supporters" of these people, such as straight women, will start to follow them out of the liberal insane asylum.

Speaking of bass players, this is an excellent book:

"In Cold Sweat: Interviews with Really Scary Musicians"

http://tinyurl.com/hjlgqq6

"From the chaotic world of music journalism comes this collection of unabridged, unexpurgated interviews with four of the brightest, most influential and complex pop and rock musicians alive: Gene Simmons of Kiss, Peter Hook of New Order, Jerry Casale of Devo, and Scott Thunes of Frank Zappa fame. They are all bass players and they are all plainspoken, profane, stressed out, caustic, antagonistic and on occasion so belligerent they are prepared to engage in psychological warfare with their interviewer."

Huh. I thought the death whistle sounded scarier. Different strokes, I suppose.

I figure on giving an intruder a blast of the whistle first. If that doesn't make him decide to leave, then rack the 12-gauge.

If the whistle works, great. That means no interaction with the police, and not having to replace carpet and drywall.

Just wanted to share some good news, we got the party for my Dad's 80th done today and a good part of it was a surprise.

This is in WI, he knew a brother was coming from WA, didn't know his sisters were coming from VA and IA. We also had 5 cousins coming from out of town plus a couple he went to high school with.

All total a mixed group of people he's known throughout his life, those and locals we sussed out were important to him. One guy gave a talk and they've know each other thru work since 1956, it was funny.

What happens on the road, stays on the road Jerry said... My Dad responded, well I have storied I could tell also.

So glad, he lost Mom 2 yrs ago after 63 yrs together. We really wanted to make this special and tell him how much he is loved. I think we succeeded, TG.

Wars have casualties. That's just how it is.
At some point we have to start thinking about the distinction between theirs and ours.
While they delight in all the casualties they rack up we see stuff like tonight where half of the conservatives here insist we must be careful not to seek any on their side. Instead their casualtiesare bemoaned by their side AND ours. As I said before it's exactly like those a few weeks back who wept for those bombed in Hiroshima.
Tell your kids that while the war for our culture was raging you refused to inflict any casualties because your "morality" forbade it. Have that integrity.

588 Well, Yo!, defining terms, while boring, is kinda the whole thing on your question of open conflict in Europe by 2020.

There's already open conflict. Ukraine. And I dunno, haven't checked lately, maybe even some action on the Trans-Dniestrian front (no, I'm not making that one up).

If by "open conflict" you mean large, organized conventional national militaries, or groupings thereof, crossing borders and engaging others like themselves - then I'd say small chance.

Why? Well, to do that, first you have to have a reason, and the will, and the capability. All three are lacking in the case of most European countries, west/central/east, NATO or not.

Right now a substantial portion of the ground forces of both France and Italy are deployed ..... guarding Jewish institutions and potential targets, inside their countries. But I don't see even the internal conflicts going sustainably "hot". In most of Europe (esp. western), people are too passive and accustomed to security being magically provided (largely by us, for decades). Plus, unarmed.

599 'Night, AOP.

I'm in southeastern PA and we had a tornado here a few years ago. It was an EF1, which I'm sure midwesterners sneer at, much like Californians with a magnitude 4 earthquake. Still, we're not used to that around here, and the damage to signs, trees, and roofs was pretty impressive.

604 Not long after we moved to Oklahoma, we were driving the family up the highway to eat at a restaurant, when I noticed the sky in the West was getting sickeningly green and dangerous looking.

Turned on the radio, heard a description that suggested a twister might be heading right toward our destination. Turned the car around, got back inside, and gave the kids their first lesson in where to be in a tornado threat.

Skies cleared, and we drove back to the restaurant. The funnel had gone right down the cross-street, twisting trees and business signs - low-level tornado, but still did a number on property.

Got to the restaurant and the young hostess came up to seat us, as if all were normal, except, her eyes were as big as saucers. A vision of adrenaline aftershock.

She told us the crew had hidden in the walk-in freezer,* although some customers just sat it out in the (glass-all-directions) dining area. Oklahomans!

*While walk-in freezers are not actually recommended, I do recall the Tulsa tornado of '74 (the one that was a block and a half from my house) destroyed the Braum's down the street... leaving only the counter, stools... and the walk-in where the employees huddled. So, not recommended but better than nothing.

608 Yo!, there's already conflict between migrants and locals, in various countries. I'd still say chances of that spinning up into anything serious are small. Unarmed populace, accustomed to being told what to do (and in Germany, how to think and how to feel about themselves).

Jews in France are responding to the situation by .... leaving. But most Euros will just continue on. And, for the most part, just submit. Like ..... most Americans (when they even have the mindset or framework to realize they're submitting).

611 Kitty Mama Jane!

These suggestions have probably all been made already for help with your cat kids, but as a proud Crazy Cat Lady who has worked for 3 years in a local no-kill pet rescue exclusively with cats (& has her own Furry Herd of multiple felines at home), here are a couple of thoughts.

For your little one with the skin issues, have you considered a enzyme/probiotic product like Dinovite? The radio ads make it sound like it's only a dog product, but there is Dinovite for cats and I have heard great things. And for the less-than-thrilling medication application routine, have you tried taking a large piece of fleece or other furry material and wrapping them firmly from the neck down and then applying the ear cream while snuggling them and kissing the side of their face? Granted, this might work better with your littler one, but I've used this process with older cats, too. Or, if either of them really love catnip, putting some of that on the floor and rubbing in the cream while they are enraptured with the catnip can also work. I use that method with a big 20-lb tabby that I often pet-sit for who also is not a fan of medication application.

Just a couple of thoughts - feel free to ignore!

615 The thing that needs to be contemplated at this point is what to do beyond this point. On the state level, I'm pretty impressed with the GOP, to be honest with you... there have been genuine conservative advances at the state level. It's at the national level that the GOP has been overrun with charlatans and statists, and I don't know how you fix that. What complicates things further is this Nate Silver chart that shows Gary Johnson pulling support from Trump in red Midwestern states

Interesting polling from seven bellwether counties:

Florida - Hillsborough County
Clinton 39% | Trump 41%
Trump +2

Colorado - Jefferson County
Clinton 40% | Trump 36%
Clinton +4

North Carolina - Watauga County
Clinton 39% | Trump 43%
Trump +4

Ohio - Sandusky County
Clinton 34% | Trump 39%
Trump +5

Pennsylvania - Luzerne County
Clinton 34% | Trump 51%
Trump +17

Virginia - Loudoun County
Clinton 45% | Trump 37%
Clinton +8

Nevada - Washoe County
Clinton 34% | Trump 46%

How can Washoe be a "bellwether" for a state with basically two urban areas, the other of which dwarfs Washoe in size?

I would think - like many states - that the largest populated area (Clark county) would be both "bellwether" and "only place that really counts" in NV?

Basically it's a map locating anyone who is willing to provide anything from range time to instruction for pretty much anyone but specifically LGTBQ (add initials as required) persons so they can learn how to defend themselves with firearms.
If anyone is interested do a web search for it, if you aren't on the Book of Faces do a web search for Lurking Rhythmically and contact the blogmistress there.

Posted by: rhomboid at June 19, 2016 02:29 AM (QDnY+)

Nevada est omnis divisa in partes tres

The state can be divided, as Caeser might say, into three parts: Clark County, which contains Las Vegas and 70% of the states population; Washoe County, which contains Reno and 20% of the states population; and the rural counties, which contain 10% of the states population.

Clark County leans Democratic (though winable by Republicans), while the rural counties are overwhelmingly Republican if not more conservative (hard right 3rd parties can be elected to partisan office in many rural counties). So even though Clark County has much more voters than the rural counties (5 to 6 times as much), the fact that the rural counties are so hardcore right wing to a large degree balances out the much more narrow Democrat lead in Clark County.

This leaves Washoe as the "Bellwether" county which has, with two notable exceptions, always gone with the statewide winner in every statewide contest in Nevada this century.

The two notable exceptions were the Sec. of State's race and the A.G. race in 2014. The reason those were the exceptions. Was due to the vote collapes in Clark County, which had a turnout of about 40% (which leaned Republican in turnout) while the rural counties were at 80-90% In the Secretary of State's race, the Republican won Clark County, while losing Washoe County (and Mineral County, which has a large Indian Reservation) due in large part to the Democrat candidate being from Northern Nevada and the Republican candidate being from Souther Nevada.

The bigger exception was the A.G. race. The Democrat won both Washoe and Clark, narrowly, but lost the state due to the overwhelming turnout and conservative bent of the rurals (the first time in modern Nevada politics where this happened).

Still, winning Washoe will result with the winner having enough votes to balance out the rural vs. Clark County gap.

An example of this can be found in the 2012 U.S. Senate race. The Democrat won Clark County by about 60,000 votes. But the Republican won because the rural counties provided a 40,000 vote margin, and the 20,000 from Washoe put the Republican over the top.
