Overnight Open Thread (6-2-2016)

Quote of the Day

What's most depressing about it is that people actually pay money to attend Oberlin. Heck, $50,586 a year is nearly a thousand bucks a week, and imagine all the fun things you could do with that kind of money. You could develop a heroin addiction, for example. A teenage junkie could spend four years shooting up and, by age 22, would probably be less confused than a typical Oberlin graduate.

Oh, sure, it's probably a bad thing to be addicted to heroin, but you never hear a junkie babbling about "frames of intersectionality," do you?

Facebook Could Be Eavesdropping On Conversations Near Your Phone

Anything that you're doing on your phone, Facebook is watching." the professor said. Now how do you prove that? Professor Kelli tested out her theory by enabling the microphone feature, and talked about her desire to go on a safari, informing about the mode of transport she would take. "I'm really interested in going on an African safari. I think it'd be wonderful to ride in one of those jeeps," she said aloud, phone in hand. The results were shocking, as less than 60 seconds later, the first post on her Facebook feed was about a safari story out of nowhere, which was then revealed that the story had been posted three hours earlier. And, after mentioning a jeep, a car ad also appeared on her page.

Japan Report - Part 2

So while I was in Yokohama I attended a Japanese baseball game which I had wanted to do for a long time. It was the Yokohama Baystars vs. the Hanshin Tigers. Since most Japanese baseball terms are taken from English and a lot of the announcements were done in English, I had no problem following the game. Professional baseball has been in Japan for almost a century - long enough for them to develop their own traditions such as the belief that the soil in Meiji-Jingu Stadium is practically hallowed ground or the Curse of Colonel Sanders.

For the most part it was very similar to attending an MLB game but with some uniquely Japanese twists such as serving sushi and sake along with the traditional fare. There are also specific cheering sections in the stands which are very organized and synchronized with cheers and songs during the game and who are allowed to bring in flags and drums. They also practice during non-game days. And then there were the beer girls who are cute, young girls in short skirts who run up and down the stands all game with a pony keg strapped to their backs selling you beers at inflated prices which you gladly pay.

Most Japanese teams have at least one or two foreign players. It used to be that Japan was where American baseball players went to keep on playing for a few more years after their MLB career was over. But recently Japan has become something of an alternative minor league for the MLB with some promising players stuck in the minors opting to go to Japan for a year or two to make some money and hopefully improve their skills enough to make it to The Show in the US. Interestingly the manager of Yokohama Baystars, Alex Ramirez formerly of the Cleveland Indians, is the only one of the few foreigners to ever manage a team in Japan.

This particular game was tied after 9 innings and then again after 12 innings. I started stretching and preparing to settle in for the long haul when all of a sudden the announcers declared the final result and people started leaving. I had forgotten that in Japan games are limited to 12 innings no matter what the score while in the US games continue until someone is ahead at the bottom of the inning or no more pitchers are available.

"Coincidence Detector": The Google Chrome Extension Alt Right Types Use to Track Jews

Apparently it's a thing now for white supremacists and Alt Right types to enclose the names of Jews on the web with triple parentheses i.e. Mark (((Levin))). As one user described it, "It's closed captioning for the Jew-blind" which just happens to help people more effectively direct their hate tweets. It also has the side benefit of being effectively unsearchable on search engines and social media. But of course it gets tedious having to manually label Jews all day so now there's a Chrome extension, Coincidence Detector, that does it for you. It crosschecks all names on web pages with it's database of Jews and Jewish-sounding names along with cucks and other Untermenschen and automatically applies the echo operator '(((x)))' so you know who they are.

Note that AoSHQ Prime members actually already get this for free in the Boobage Detector feature - just uncheck everything in the Options menu including Moronettes Only and then check just the Shadayim box with Min Size set to zero.

Obama Regulators Lose Case to Apply Future Laws to the Past

Congratulations  - you may already be a future criminal.

The Obama administration Medicare administrators tried to fine therapy provider Caring Hearts $800,000 for violating regulations back in 2008 that were not even issued until 2010. The judge's opinion is well-written, quite readable for a non-lawyer, and damning to the government.

This case has taken us to a strange world where the government itself -- the very "expert" agency responsible for promulgating the "law" no less - seems unable to keep pace with its own frenetic lawmaking. A world Madison worried about long ago, a world in which the laws are "so voluminous they cannot be read" and constitutional norms of due process, fair notice, and even the separation of powers seem very much at stake. But whatever else one might say about our visit to this place, one thing seems to us certain: an agency decision that loses track of its own controlling regulations and applies the wrong rules in order to penalize private citizens can never stand. Indeed, we would not be surprised if -- should Caring Hearts bring an otherwise eligible application for costs and fees under the Equal Access to Justice Act, 28 U.S.C. § 2412(d) - CMS were to accept on remand that its positions in this case were not "substantially justified."

...The district court's order affirming the agency's denial of relief under § 1395pp is vacated and this matter is remanded to the district court with instructions to return the case to the agency promptly for further proceedings consistent with this opinion.

Univision Anchor Booed, Heckled for Speaking Spanish, Attacking Trump During Cal State Fullerton Commencement Speech

Follow the logic, that only a journalist can truly understand, apparently.

Salinas chooses to use a commencement speech to divide her audience along cultural and political lines. She insults the English speaking audience by purposely delivering comments in a language that they could not understand. She encourages them to chuck out any journalistic ethics they may have learned at college by encouraging the new graduates to "use the tools of media to rebut political figures such as Donald Trump."

And when the graduates use their voices and their 1st amendment rights to communicate their opposing opinion to her rude and radical message, she blames Donald Trump.

Obama's Job Approval Reaches 51%, Highest of His Second Term

It beats the fuck out of me. All I can think is that the less he's in the public eye the more LIVs tend to replace the actual Obama with their imagined fantasy version of a President Obama in their minds. Note that this has implications for which party is more likely to win the 2016 election.

32 "Interestingly the manager of Yokohama Baystars, Alex Ramirez formerly of
the Cleveland Indians, is the only foreign team manager ever in Japan."

Not true. Leo Durocher was hired to manage in Japan after he'd been fired by his last MLB team, the Houston Astros. He lasted less than on eyear.

In his "as told to" autobiography, "Nice Guys Finish Last", Durocher told a revealing story about Japan. It seems that in one game, the umpire made a decision that Durocher thought was outrageous. Durocher turned to his translator and asked him for something really awful that he could call the umpire. The translator said something; and Durocher marched up to the umpire and barked it at him. The umpire, horrified, immediately threw him out of the game. As he was leaving, Durocher asked the translator, "By the way, what did I say?" "Oh," the translator replied, "you called him a dirty Korean."

But I think the Hokkaido team the "Fighters" (many call them the "Fighting Hams" because their sponsor - Japanese teams have one prime sponsor/owner - is Nippon Ham company) won the Japan Series a few years ago under an American manager. Forget his name.

My game was at the Tigers' home field in Osaka. Against the Hiroshima Carp.

As I recall, the Sapporo girls were in pink, the Asahi girls were in blue?

Anyway, the chants and cheers and songs are pretty amusing.

I think each team is limited to a certain number of foreign players (3?). One of the Tigers' key players for years has been their American second baseman, who hit a game-winning homer at the game I attended.

First big press conference.

He walks up to the podium.

"Well, looks like I'm the new kid on the block. Shoot."

Minutes of uncomfortable silence as the Japanese press corps tries to decide what to do, and what the guy just said.

Would have been amusing to record the translator's attempts with this one.

105 I recently went to my niece's graduation from Parson's School of Design. The graduating class was huge - the ceremony was held at the Javits Center. Every kid represented at least 40 large a year for four years to Parsons...yet almost every friggin' speaker from Parsons was talking about capitalism and social justice and equality and being a 'change agent."

If capitalism is so bad, why don't the professors and administration work for free?

They gave the same honorary degree to Diane Von Furstenberg (a woman who rose from difficult circumstances to create a fashion empire) as they did to some creature from Orange is the New Black, who merely parlayed the cross-dressing schtick popularized by Milton Berle into a career.

Every speaker but one mouthed stupid platitudes about being disruptors and challenging convention and being change agents, all attitudes which are employer repellent. The only speaker with actual useful advice was DVF, who told them to be the first in and the last to leave and that there are no stupid jobs, just stupid people.

She was the only speaker who got as much applause from the parents as from the kids.

My brother and I were alternately laughing at the speakers and fuming at them. Thank God my niece has her head screwed on halfway straight.

They're (we're?) actually bipedal vegetable like plants that move very slowly but who have 20 pound brains who developed this program so as to learn and exercise their intellect.

They run simultaneous situations making small changes in parameters and then see how things play out.

In Cairo, where a completely ginned-up organized "protest" of the video and things American/western was raging outside the embassy, some idiot inside "tweeted" a message to the protesters.

1) WTF is an embassy "tweeting" anything? I've actually been in embassies, in crisis zones, and it would never cross anyone's mind to use such a stupid format to convey a message of any importance.

2) The message was jaw-dropping. Basically, a weaselly circuitous apology for free expression. Utterly disgraceful, incomprehensible, for a US mission in the face of idiotic mob thuggery.

Another not so small hint that the US simply isn't what it was. Not even recognizably similar.

And it starts with about the funniest baseball moment I've seen in a movie. Movie starts, Selleck's at the plate, and you hear the announcers. "Well, Tom's in a pretty bad slump. His age is showing. 3-2 pitch - swing and a miss, strike three." Selleck looks glum, starts to trudge back to the dugout, when ump says, "hey Selleck - back in the box. You're holding us up." Selleck looks confused, but gets back in. "And he swings and misses, strike four!" Selleck steps out of the box, ump gets on him again, "C'mon Selleck, let's play ball!" "Here's the pitch - oh, he misses again, that's strike five!" Another swing and miss. "And that's strike six - say, what's the league rule on mercy killings?

And then Selleck wakes up in bed in a cold sweat.

133 The holographic principle is just of an extension of an interesting little thing. You know how, from various theorems of vector calculus, you can reduce a 2D integral (a surface integral) into a line integral? In general, you can reduce a N-D integral into a N-1 D integral.

Why, hell even a regular single variable integral reduces to a simple subtraction. The difference between the anti-derivative of the function being intregrated at two points. That sort of 1D being reduced to 0D, so to speak.

Well, the holographic principle is sort of that same principle. Roughly speaking.

American sentries used baseball questions as challenges in the European theater. It was just assumed that Yanks would know the answers and the Krauts wouldn't.

It's amusing to think that might have not worked in Japan.

155 Just to impress you at what a geek I am (and after looking things up to confirm, but don't tell anyone), yep that's the holographic principle.

The entire universe to which we are causally connected in our little neighborhood of the thing, which is 3 spatial plus one temporal dimension can, in GR terms, be, well the information about it, all that is needed to know, be projected on a 2D surface, a light-like surface (null surface in the language). So two spatial plus one temporal dimension.

Big fucking deal, really. Same as a surface integral can be reduced to a line integral around the boundary of that surface, and so on. It's the same principle.

Such a null surface can be an event horizon, and will be the cosmological horizon in this accelerating expanding universe we think it is now. Again, BFD. It's just some mathematical whiz-bangery.

It may mean something, may be profound, but the idea that it means we're some sort of simulation is very fanciful flight of fancy.

It's the typical example of the popular press taking something that's very mathematical and theoretical physics-y and trying to make something cool of out of it. The writers of that fancy have no idea what they're talking about. They only hear things they think means something and run with it.

162 Interesting point about US using baseball questions to ID Germans/confirm legit identity of soldiers in American uniform, rickl.

Of course in the Pacific theater, ethnicity was sufficient. Besides, I doubt most Japanese had the detailed knowledge of American baseball they might have had about their own league.

Of course ethnicity wasn't always sufficient. In one incident on Iwo Jima, a "Japanese" soldier sprung up out of his covered spider-hole before the Marines applied their tested clearing technique - burst from a Thompson, followed by a grenade or two through the thatched cover.

"Don't shoot, I'm American!". He was. Had bad timing - was visiting relatives in Japan in December 1941, ended up drafted into the Japanese Army.

Very similiar thing happened with an American from the Chicago area, visiting family in Iraq in 1990. Jumped up from a trench in Kuwait the Marines were clearing - without much shooting in this case, as the Iraqis still there were happy to surrender quickly. Reportedly he was wearing a blue Cubs t-shirt (where's navycopjoe?), and sort of yelled at the Marines - "where have you been? I've been waiting for you for months!"

163 Since Maet included Facebook's latest power grab in the ONT, I have a question for tech-savvy morons/ettes: I don't have a FB account and no intention whatever of getting one. But I have been following the FB page of an animal rescue group that I care about (I don't visit anything else on FB if I can help it).

There were no problems until last weekend, when a pop-up that covers almost half the page appeared telling me that if I want to see more of [group's name] page, I can open an account and log in to FB. It is possible to see what I want to see on the page by just scrolling, but I am infuriated by this blatant corporate bullying. It has made me more determined than ever to never open a FB account.

So my questions to the Horde are as follows: 1) Have any other morons/ettes who do not have FB accounts seen these pop-ups if/when they visit someone else's FB page? 2) Anybody have any ideas for getting rid of the pop-ups? 3) Anybody have any good (legal) ideas for getting Zuckerberg where it hurts?

I kinda sorta figure that 98% top tax rates without loopholes would do the job. The "you didn't build that" heuristic for taxation. After all, they just lucked into all of that huge wealth, and should be forced to pay Their Fair Share of it.

And, since Fuckerberg and his cronies routinely and lavishly fund the very same institutional left who advocate for precisely these policies, it would be a dose of their own medicine.

171 The concept of time is the key to trying to understand the physics of the Universe. A Mayfly is living at a different speed of time compared to a dog. I've never heard of a game ending because no more pitchers (or bench-warmers who might go in and pitch) were available, but I suppose it could happen.

If you were down to your last pitcher and the game still went on and on and on, you can't keep the guy working out there until his arm falls off. And you might have already emptied your bench with pinch-hitters and other replacements, so you couldn't just put Joe Blow on the mound and hope he can fake it.
So wouldn't you have to forfeit?

Well, since I don't book my face I might not be aware of what they're doing.

AdAware is the neutron bomb of adblockers for Android devices, and on the phone I don't feel too guilty about blocking ads because they REALLY screw up the user experience. But it requires a rooted device.

Correct, Bull Halsey played baseball against the Japanese when he was on the Great White Fleet....

people also credit the Japanese with some martial techniques that they in fact borrowed from English Catch wrestlers.

This began in the late 1800s as the English lent the Meiji era its technical expertise on Naval and Rail technologies.

Japan has always had an interesting love affair with parts of the west.

ANY other player on the roster can play at any position. You can get your 3rd string catcher or outfielder to come in and pitch and, yes, it's been done.

A somewhat similar problem can arise in hockey, when goalies become incapacitated.

Have seen plenty of times when regular players had to "don the pads" and step in when the regular goalie is hurt (did it myself once) - but of course recreational teams don't have two goalies ready to go.

I believe it's happened in the pros, but maybe only at the minor league level.

Depending the background of the outfielder coming in to pitch, or the defenseman going in to guard the net, it could be interesting.

Well, since I don't book my face I might not be aware of what they're doing.

AdAware is the neutron bomb of adblockers for Android devices, and on the phone I don't feel too guilty about blocking ads because they REALLY screw up the user experience. But it requires a rooted device.

On the desktop I don't block ads here, or a few other places.

205 187 Actually, non-pitchers pitching happens fairly regularly. I know it's happened at least twice this year already. And it's usually not when you're out of pitchers, but when you're losing by 15 runs in the 8th and don't want to waste a pitcher, (so he can still pitch tomorrow.)

Yes! Good point.
And sometimes you get lucky and get to see a famous non-pitcher pitch then. I remember seeing Wade Boggs on the mound once ---(get off my lawn!)--- and he was actually pretty good. Struck out Jerry Hairston, IIRC.

206 All that spying and "phoning home" the information, not to mention loading all the ads takes bandwidth, which is at a premium on the mobile market, and you're paying for it.

It's the same thing as paying for receiving ads on broadcast TV. Hell, I guess you do that with cable so to speak, but accounting wise, the advertising is still paying some of the freight to get the content to you.

207 That's why I'm trying to figure out how this could happen, ending a game because you are out of pitchers. I guess it's possible but I've never heard of such a thing.

I don't believe it's ever happened in professional baseball in the US. The longest game ever was a 32 inning game between Rochester and Pawtucket in the early '80's, and they played that to a finish.

However - about 10 or 12 years ago, in the All-Star game, the National League ran out of pitchers. Which was an aberration in that they took out pitchers after one inning each - not because they were tired or ineffective, but so they could 'get everyone into the game'. Then, when the game was tied late, they ran out of pitchers, and they didn't want to put position players in to pitch only because it was the All-Star game. So the Commissioner called it a tie, and everyone was disgusted. Thanks Bud Selig! (baseball's version of Prez Jughead)

208 Yes torque, the virtual evaporation of dignity or seriousness was pervasive when the country beclowned itself in 2008.

In the Cairo embassy case it was both the style (tweeting) and the substance (craven weaselly s**t essentially apologizing for free speech in the US) that were so outrageous and inappropriate.

Old enough to have seen/participated in decades of the US usually defending basic principles against the darkness, whether traditional as in most of the world or organized powerful and aggressive as in the Cold War.

And - poof. Suddenly the US has the prestige, honor, and backbone of a small European country.

You want to leave him in, but there's this one lefty batter, and you really want lefty reliever to pitch to him. So you bring in lefty reliever to pitch, send righty pitcher out to play left field for one batter. Lefty gets lefty out, bring righty pitcher back in, and send out new left fielder.

Didn't go back to look, but, when we got home, from the smell, I'd say whatever it was not only was already dead but had been marinating in the sun for a while this afternoon.

The machine's personality would change at a whim based on the material it was being fed. Eventually it became hostile, and would squirt hot lead at its operator if he tried to shut the machine off. Quite funny.

Another character joked that you could drive him insane by going out and planting little red flags on your property in some crazy pattern. He'd see it, wonder what you were up to, and drive himself nuts trying to figure it out.

I actually did that. I planted a few little red flags near the road out in one of our fields. It did drive him nuts, and he was asking everyone what we were up to. Were we going to be build something, or were we about to sell a lot off it or something like that.

I finally just up and said, with him around, I put them out there just to see how long little flags like that would last in the weather.

I'll tell you why - because it's a gamble. If the hitter hits a liner, and the pitcher in left falls over himself for a three-base error, the writers will write what an idiot the manager is. Just like real life, most managers will play it 'by the book' to avoid criticism. Great managers aren't afraid to take the chance. I have 4 antique metal lawn chairs in my front yard. Every time I mow the grass, I have to move the chairs a bit, of course.
I didn't realize that they were slowly getting closer to the road (thus, closer to the retard's house across the street). I heard through the grapevine that he was so paranoid that he was going to call the police because "he's over there watching me!"

Once I heard that, I arranged the chairs pointing directly at his house, and would take every opportunity to have friends sit out there and watch his house while we drank a beer & laughed.

I could write an ace movie review post about this idiot and how much fun it is to F with him...

260 Speaking of "intellectual stammer", I remember an episode of Buckley's Firing Line years ago. Now, I can't remember if it actually happened, or if I just exaggerated it in my mind thinking about parodying it or something.

Anyway, it was Buckley, and he had two guests, lefty loons. One was old John Kenneth Galbraith, I think, and the other was some lefty kook professor of some leftist shit. He had male pattern baldness, but with crazy, wiring hair sticking out everywhere. His suit, or or outfit was some god-awful mess that clashed loudly, and looked like a clown put it together just to make you laugh.

Now, Buckley had his own stammer, with that mid-Atlantic accent of his. "Ahhhh, ahhhhh, ahhhhhh, I say, ahhhhhh, we should RAHther ahhhh, ahhhh, blah, blah, aahhhhh, ahhhhdd, blah, blah."

Galbraith or whoever the hell had his own stammer, and the lunatic had a stammer that sounded like his was constipated and had the biggest turd he'd ever tried to pass stuck in his ass and he was in terrible distress: "Huhhhhhhhhhnnnnnnnnnn, I say, huhhhhhhnnnnnn".

And Buckley, well he wasn't that bad, but his suits were rumpled and he'd slouch so much in his chair with that damned clipboard you'd think he was going to slide out in the floor.

And of course, Michael Kinsley presided over it all sitting there looking like he had a 12" dildo up his ass.

Anyway, they were going on about some damned shit, and it was a cacophony of "Ahhhhhh, ahhhhhhhh, ahhhhh -- Huhhhhhnnnnnnn, Huhhhnnnnn. Well, I say, Huhhhnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. Ahhhhh, ahhhhh."

I got to laughing so hard I nearly pissed myself. Again, I can't remember if it really happened or I just exaggerated it in my mind and then nearly pissed myself.

But that is "intellectual stammer". Bunch of horseshit.

Golden Hair Weasel, for all his many faults and shortcomings (in my eyes, anyway), has managed to coalesce just about every single person or group responsible for making life miserable into a single united front. He's brought them all out of the wood-work, and he's scared the hell out of them.

I can attest to having seen this guy in action. Chi missed a great revenue opportunity when he said, "the guy is going to do X, Y, and Z" -- and I said, "No fuckin' way."

'Cause I'd have been willing to bet cash that nobody was that much of a predictable jackass -- and, yet, the guy did exactly X, Y, and Z in that order with no interruptions.

266 THis neighbor would never come out and ask you anything directly. He'd always try to sneak and trick you out of information. All he'd have to 3/4 of the time is ask, and I'd gladly tell, but no he always thought you were trying to cover something up.

People like that are actually telling you about themselves. *He* was the one trying to cover everything up and didn't want anyone to know *his* business. So he figured everyone else was the same.

I knew another who was the biggest skinflint tightward on the planet. He would go around the world just to get one more penny in, or one less penny out. He assumed everyone was trying to cheat him. And so, he'd never want to pay the asking price, always trying to drive you down. He thought you were always going way high.

Again, that was *him*. He was always asking too much for his own stuff. And assumed everyone else was doing the same. Yep, I figured that bit of psychology out a while back.

This guy, hell. You know, just take some one out of the blue. 90% of the people will like him, and 10% won't. Let him start expressing opinions and it will soon be 50/50 or worse.

But this dude, it was 10/90. 90% of the people would despise him at first sight. He just had an irritating manner.

One of my many, many newsfeeds is Google "Entertainment." I see lot of those "who dat?" headlines.

As time goes on, I recognize fewer celebrities and pop stars. Which is fine. As my brain cells decrease, I don't need to have any dedicated to the latest person famous for being famous this week.

Milady and I did watch a nice Fred and Ginger movie the other night. Top Hat. Fun music by Irving Berlin, co-starring the delightful Edward Everett Horton. Indulgent sets and massive choreography. Now, that's worth dedicating some brain cells. And it's one movie I'll bet they'll never re-make.

Am I rambling? About time to retire these brain cells for the night....

273 Re: Re-writing Reality...

If you could be Lord over the nation, you'd think of lots of ways to change everything, because you're smarter than anybody.

If you were Prince over the planet, you'd certainly run the place differently - what a mess it was until you exerted your wisdom! (And thus did the Prince of this world put the foundations out of kilter practically from the beginning of humanity.)

If you had dominion over hundreds of worlds, and your ego got the better of you, you'd know you can do better than the alleged First Source, and would re-make things with your liberal ideas. (And thus did the Father of Lies pervert his domain, dragging a third of the angels down with him.)

If you were the true God of all Creation, you'd set things up just as they are, because in the Ultimate perspective, it's for the best, even if only the Creators can fully understand it that way while time unfolds.

Funny about that.

278 As for the spying on your phone, I 100% believe this is happening.

My Experience.

Last summer I decided to binge watch Silicon Valley over again. My phone was near me the whole time.

A day or so after finishing the series I'm looking at a random website on my phone and on the website is an ad for a cabinet company, that company just happened to have the same name as one of the companies on Silicon Valley.

During the whole time I rewatched the series I never did a search for the series, any of it's terms or anything that would have my phone know about this company. The only thing I can think of is that there is a program that overhears what you're talking about and sends that to ad companies.

I had something similar happen months earlier, I mentioned something about Super Mario Brother to a friend and we talked about it for a few minutes, the next day i had adds for some new Mario game.

as for ads on FB, NoScript takes care of some of them, and i randomly block what they do show me as either uninteresting or offensive.

they rarely, if ever, post ads on my side bar anymore, and, if they ever suggest something they think i might like, that is actually interesting, i fire up another browser, and Bing search for it.

given that we're linked to the Net via Dish, and i get a new hash here every few days, i'm fairly certain i'm about as invisible to them as possible.

That doesn't happen for me. Then, again, I make a point of having a "dumb-phone"; I don't use any apps; my GPS is a separate device; I block all ads, scripts, and Flash by default on any internet-facing device; I don't generally use payment services (with the exception of Paypal before Ira); and I use ixquick search instead of Google or Bing.

I just got a smoker -- it should arrive next week. As an aside, Consumer Reports is less and less relevant every year. They don't do smokers, for instance -- and the last time we bought a vacuum, none of the "best buys" or "recommendeds" were actually available in local stores. Further, we just bought a new dishwasher, and one of the most important selection criteria (whether you could load odd-sized/large objects) wasn't covered [as a side note, if you have adjustable tines on the sides but fixed tines in the middle, you can never load anything bigger than about 1/3 the space across the dishwasher because it'll interfere with the fixed; if you have adjustable tines in the middle, you can load objects up to about 1/2 the space across the dishwasher. We bought the one with adjustable tines across the entire dishwasher so we can load things like electrostatic precipitator cells and cooktop ventilator hood baffles].

305 we got a Fisher Paykel dishwasher (at Lowes for 50% because it was a floor model) and all the tines and the silverware basket are removable, as are the upper, fold down shelves.

best thing for us, since we are a DINK household, is that there are two drawers, so we don't have to dirty everything we own just to run an efficient cycle.

that's because the washer is designed to be kosher, and, as long as you run the separate lines all the way to the outfall pipe, you're compliant.

as an unorthodox, unreformed Jew, that wasn't an issue for this household, but it's a great machine. the quick cycle on "Eco" takes 38 minutes start to finish.

if we're having company, you can clean as you go, and, by the time the even is over, just about everything is clean and put away.

My guess is that NSA is doing it now for things like airports/tollbooths. Google is in the process of integrating the googleverse now, but will need 1-3 years to really get it going. Facebook is desperately trying to pretend it has something in the same order of magnitude as Google, but ultimately doesn't. Microsoft's Windows 10 is an attempt to play catch-up by subverting entire devices at a whack instead of matching up all the gmail/google docs/google maps/etc. pieces.....and will fail as they lose 50% of market share over the next 3 years.

We ended up with an LG LDS5040. For 75 Consumer Reports points at $500, it's a good fit for the sort of things they check; it's maximally configurable for the aforementioned large stuff; and it was instantly available.

Oddest thing to date (and, btw, there are some peculiarities -- for instance, the silverware widgets have slots of randomly different sizes....so a knife might fit in one slot but none of the immediately adjacent ones) -- any time you initiate a cycle or one ends, it sings a little song. I think this might be the company that Douglas Adams was parodying with the Sirius Cybernetics Company schtick in Hithchikers'.

311 Palpatine,
I don't know what a Reaver is. I've heard of torrent, I guess...
I don't use public WiFi .
Yeah, I'm a simpleton.
My only connection to the outside world is this little Samsung & an grandfathered T-mobile acct with unltd phone, text and data. Works well enough for me...

Red,
Years ago, I did weeks of research and decided that my new washer/dryer set would be a Fisher Paykel. Bought top of the line models (like you, floor model of last year's @ 50% or so). Washer took a major shit 3 days after the 3 year warranty. I am no longer impressed.
I hope you have better luck than I did.

312 307 I just got a smoker -- it should arrive next week.
---
hope it was a Weber Smokey Mountain...

PS: if you haven't ever checked out this site, and it's searchable archives, i'd urge you to do so...

the wisdom of the ages is available there, not just about smoking meat, but sides, etc... over the years i've watched people go from futzing around in the back yard, to competing, to winning to opening successful businesses...

it's all there.

Heh...

at work, I walked the fab floor once, and was shocked that every single robot played a little jingle when it finished its cycle.

The super explained that a good operator could hear, at a distance, which machine was doing what, and a decent team leader could know, in a few minutes, the status of every wafer on every machine in the place without having to use the Real-Time Production Management System, which wasn't real-time in any meaningful sense of the word, anyway.

314 it's been running well for years... we had one small glitch, a couple of years after we got it, that required a service call and a replacement part, but that apparently was an anomaly, as it's been running like a champ ever since, and the same part in the other drawer hasn't as much as hiccuped.

Reaver is a piece of software that cracks wifi passwords and, with another piece of software - IP shift - you can break into a wifi network and spoof it into thinking your computer is supposed to be there.

It's amusing enough, but it'll probably take me some time to get used to it. We have CO, fire, and flood sensors; beeps from phones and intercoms and opening/closing monitored entry points; we have computers and radios and televisions....and, now, we have a dishwasher singing Korean nursery-school songs to itself.

The unit I got was the IK-541706 at Cabela's. I'm not providing a link because their stupid linking system includes 42 thousand characters of personalization in the link. It's relatively new to Cabela's, so they don't have a lot of worthwhile reviews -- tracking it back to Amazon (and beyond), it looks like a slightly updated version of a well-liked unit (they changed a couple of common complaints).

It's not about nesting -- the holes are oval, and diagonal to the basket -- things self-align so that nesting would be difficult to do intentionally. But the log axis seems to vary randomly in size.

I decided on the chewable treat style, 3 month dose. Bravecto.
My other choice was topical drops (nope) or a Seresto collar for $70 (8 months? Really?) - a subsidiary of Bayer.

Well, I learned here the other day about Bayer's role in making Zyklon B, so I felt it necessary to let the doctor* know why I can't buy that or anything else made by Bayer.
She was shocked, and I got the impression that she may even nix any Bayer products in the future.
I was happy for a few hours today .

The only un-smart thing about Sarah Palin is that she trusted the GOPe and hitched her wagon to "nothing to fear" McCain. I had her pegged as a person to watch months before anyone else had heard of her because of her record in Alaska. She took on TPTB, kicked ass, and took names.

IMHP, nobody in their right mind would want to spend significant time with Trump. He's not a "BFF" kind-of guy. But while I might dislike having to spend time with him personally, I can like very much the thought of him spending copious amounts of time with people who are not my friends. I can like, as a person, the Donald Trump that drives leftist maniacs into frothing rages, and makes GOPers wet themselves in dismay.

And whatever personal characteristics he uses to do this.....fine by me.

You're wrong to think about "liking Trump" in the way that you're doing -- it's not like you're going to marry him. Trump will be liked for what he does, and who he upsets, and what sacred cows he will gore.

One of my favorite Trump fantasies is that he just closes the White House press room. Throws all the bums out. Padlocks it. Anyone can email a question to the Trump White House, and all responses are posted on Youtube. Press on AF1? How 'bout: "no"? Special press planes -- fuck no. Special press galleries -- nope. Special press access? -- get within 100 feet and the Secret Service will plug you, just like anyone else. Stop the nonsense.

Another dream would be the end of "State of the Union" addresses. For many years, they were simple letters delivered by courier. Those were good years -- maybe we should emulate them.

Do you really think the supercilious bureaucracies can bring themselves to kowtow to someone not from Harvard or Yale? Who hasn't spent decades in academia or government? Who has made money by actually providing value, rather than looting taxpayers?

Yeah, individual legislators can try to curry favor through being "nice" and maybe "support him personally" -- but the corrupt cesspit city as-a-whole is viscerally opposed to him. I hope he burns it down, disperses the stones, and salts the fields. And if he does, he will be a great President and I will be well-disposed towards him to the end of my days.

384 As I have frequently noted, our era is quite similar to another era where the depredations of a Central Bank had become intolerable, for almost exactly the same reasons. We need a stiff-necked old coot to do what needs to be done in such circumstances, as we had in 1832 -- http://avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/ajveto01.asp

And, as I have done before, let me highlight Andrew Jackson's words of wisdom:

"It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their selfish purposes. Distinctions in society will always exist under every just government. Equality of talents, of education, or of wealth can not be produced by human institutions. In the full enjoyment of the gifts of Heaven and the fruits of superior industry, economy, and virtue, every man is equally entitled to protection by law; but when the laws undertake to add to these natural and just advantages artificial distinctions, to grant titles, gratuities, and exclusive privileges, to make the rich richer and the potent more powerful, the humble members of society-the farmers, mechanics, and laborers-who have neither the time nor the means of securing like favors to themselves, have a right to complain of the injustice of their Government. There are no necessary evils in government. Its evils exist only in its abuses. If it would confine itself to equal protection, and, as Heaven does its rains, shower its favors alike on the high and the low, the rich and the poor, it would be an unqualified blessing. In the act before me there seems to be a wide and unnecessary departure from these just principles.

Nor is our Government to be maintained or our Union preserved by invasions of the rights and powers of the several States. In thus attempting to make our General Government strong we make it weak. Its true strength consists in leaving individuals and States as much as possible to themselves-in making itself felt, not in its power, but in its beneficence; not in its control, but in its protection; not in binding the States more closely to the center, but leaving each to move unobstructed in its proper orbit.

Experience should teach us wisdom. Most of the difficulties our Government now encounters and most of the dangers which impend over our Union have sprung from an abandonment of the legitimate objects of Government by our national legislation, and the adoption of such principles as are embodied in this act. Many of our rich men have not been content with equal protection and equal benefits, but have besought us to make them richer by act of Congress. By attempting to gratify their desires we have in the results of our legislation arrayed section against section, interest against interest, and man against man, in a fearful commotion which threatens to shake the foundations of our Union. It is time to pause in our career to review our principles, and if possible revive that devoted patriotism and spirit of compromise which distinguished the sages of the Revolution and the fathers of our Union. If we can not at once, in justice to interests vested under improvident legislation, make our Government what it ought to be, we can at least take a stand against all new grants of monopolies and exclusive privileges, against any prostitution of our Government to the advancement of the few at the expense of the many, and in favor of compromise and gradual reform in our code of laws and system of political economy."

One thing that is truly amazing is that Jackson's message is clear and explanatory -- not vacuous and obscure. It is thoughtful and lucid, instead of sound-bites and rhetoric. Let me be completely clear about this -- I don't trust Trump as a conservative, I don't believe he has a firm grounding in the principles of segregated powers and limited government, and I don't believe his vision of the United States is as free as mine is.....but to a large extent, it doesn't matter.

I think it likely that large segments of the government bureaucracy will revolt under a Trump administration. Just like Trump, I don't think they're cognizant that their power and jurisdiction are well past the limits that the Founding Fathers enshrined in the Constitution. But when the Bureaucracy and the Administration are on different sides of a dispute over power and jurisdiction, then courts can rule.

I don't know what your work status is now, but did you not at some point use your gifts and talents to make a living.?

431 @424

You're exactly right.

The supposed opposition has and had no plan or strategy in place to degrade Obamas popularity and the MSM isn't going to do their job for them so this steaming turd is going to leave office with high approval ratings and transition to shadow presidency mode.

We'll never be free of this cocksucker.

Thanks for the compliment, votermom. It's times like this I wish I were retired so I could really stretch out and give you all more stories and pix.

But since I mentioned Hedda Hopper - whose real name, of all things, was Elda Furry - here's a formal portrait of her from her early days as an actress:
http://goo.gl/Y8gA8Y

Not particularly flattering, but Hopper wasn't the most attractive person, either. The great Florenz Ziegfeld once called her a "clumsy cow" when she tried out for the Follies.

434 Elda Furry - did she have a younger sister named Yanga Furry?

Posted by: @votermom at June 03, 2016 07:08 AM (7lVbc)

435
Oh, what the heck, a little more before I start work in earnest.

Ziegfeld had strict requirements for his girls, their measurements being 36-26-38.

And what did he like himself? Well, here's his first wife, the luscious candybox of a woman, showgirl Anna Held:

And his second wife, twittery-voiced Billie Burke, whom you know best as Glinda the Good Witch:

437 "Obama's Job Approval Reaches 51%, Highest of His Second Term"

Even worse, a large percentage of those that disapprove are from the left that think he is not liberal enough and not imposing the leftist agenda fast enough.
I see numbers like that and it convinces me are already over the edge. That occurred in 2012 with his re-election. We are now just fighting a rear-guard action and hoping for low turnout by the left/LIV's.

.His second term popularity is going to eclipse Bill Clinton's by the end is my guess. There is little doubt that obama is extremely popular on the left and most of that comes from him ignoring the rules and laws of Government and doing everything with his pen and phone. Liberals love that and they just can't get enough of it.

They don't care that most of what he is doing or has done will be tied up in the courts for years and will be undone in the end, they just care that he is screwing Republicans by ignoring laws and doing what he wants to do.

I think there's been a coup. The monied interests have spoken and the Republican Party is 100% on board. We're going to have a left-totalitarian state and there's nothing anyone can do to stop it.

Fenlon, I have a wife and son.

I make a living.

My values are being murdered and undermined and the elected, the law, and our civil groups do nothing to stop it.

I am not discussing literal suicide, I am discussing tending my garden in peace and letting nature take its course.

Sorry to have troubled you.
