Are you sure, though? Sure, the prodigal son spent all his money on hookers and blow, but after that was over, he was living in the streets and eating pig food for a while before he could bring himself to go back to his father. The choice wasn't worth it from his point of view. The loyal son didn't get a few weeks to party, but on the whole, I think he was still better off.

Posted by: joe, living dangerously at May 13, 2016 10:07 AM (KUaJL)

51 Guy goes out and spends all his money, loses his clothes, probably picks up a few diseases, and all he has to say is "please forgive me!" and all is well. A girl, on the other hand, has a solid relationship, or two, with a random soccer or football team (Division 1!) and her parents reject her out of hand!

Where is the justice?!?!

Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at May 13, 2016 10:08 AM (lutOX)

54 I can see how the parable bothers people, but the prodigal son learns humility and asks for forgiveness. And, yes, many of us can relate to being the "good son" who led a life of virtue, but there's a lesson in that, too. Virtue is not about material benefits. That's a hard lesson, but the important ones often are.

But the prodigal son did suffer consequences. He lived like a hobo and starved before he realized the error of his ways.

I think of parents I know who had kids with serious problems with drugs. Yeah, they probably spent more time and attention trying to help out the problem children rather the kids who were always good, but what's the alternative?

60 Like the interaction between Martha and Mary, it can be taken the wrong way - reflecting on your reaction to both of these stories can do things for your self-awareness.

I always like the Good Samaritan, myself - combined with Jesus' summary of the law, I think you get the whole Christian ethic for those who want 'just the bottom line'.

Exactly. Why can't we ALL be layabouts with ZERO responsibility and have everything given to us?
Who in the universe gets to make that decision on who wins the lazy game and who loses and has to work their ass off?

Posted by: rickb223 at May 13, 2016 10:10 AM (Yu4ah)

64 And I agree with you Y-Not--when I read it, it does affect me because we're all very imperfect creatures and we all need to seek redemption, which was a new concept when Jesus presented it. As a parent, I would never stop loving my kids...but, as one of the more imperfect people in the world, I have a hard time accepting my siblings' behavior.

I guess that why the prodigal son went to his father instead of his brother for help.

69 Kind of related, this was a song that my grandmother used to sing all the time. Does anyone remember it?

Which Loved Her Best?
Anonymous

"I love you, Mother," said little John;
Then, forgetting his work, his cap went on.
And he was off to the garden swing,
And left her the water and wood to bring.

"I love you, Mother," said little Nell;
"I love you better than tongue can tell."
Then she teased and pouted full half the day,
Till her mother rejoiced when she went to play.

"I love you, Mother," said little Fan;
"To-day I'll help you all I can;
How glad I am school doesn't keep!"
So she rocked the baby till it fell asleep.

Then, stepping softly, she took the broom,
And swept the floor and tidied the room.
Busy and happy all day was she,
Helpful and happy as child could be.

"I love you, Mother," again they said,
Three little children going to bed.
How do you think that Mother guessed
Which of them really loved her best?

And that's the modern world truth. Yes, let the youngster go out and learn his lessons, come home with humility, vow to change.

Wonderful.

But in this brave new world of ours, the lessons don't get learned. I've seen that play out over and over and over and over and over again, aging parents who die from heartbreak, as their "prodigal" sons suck the life out of them. Go back onto streets, then go back into "treatment," then back home to suck more life out of family.

Show me a parent who can love from afar, as their son or daughter gets a clue, screws back on some self-respect and independence, and I'll show you a parent who has something to celebrate.

Posted by: BurtTC at May 13, 2016 10:13 AM (Dj0WE)

74 The moral of the story is that salvation is available to everyone at anytime and those that already have salvation should celebrate those that are lost but now found.

I like the parable about the lost gold coin to make that point instead of the prodigal son.

75 "Family values" are not all they're cracked up to be, as the Testaments attest. In some families, it's pretty easy to be branded the Prodigal. And all too often, the GoodyTwo-Shoes are really the heavy schemers, especially when there is a family enterprise involved.

And the fvcking Germans will stab each other in the back until the goddam cows come home, burn down the barn, and then blame the Joos. Sayin. Just sayin. Not that any of this ever could happen within 100 miles of any family of mine. Oh no.

Yep. It's about how both sons are lost, with the elder one thinking that if he follows the rules he deserves more. "The Prodigal God" is a good book exploring this parable.

The responsible son was told off because he wasn't being responsible for the right reasons. He was just being responsible to get stuff, not out of love or devotion. Yes, the prodigal got a party but he wasn't getting a new inheritance. He was welcomed back but he still would suffer the consequences of his choices.

86 The beggar is Cruz. Trump is forgiving him. Christie, on the right, is offering tangible expression of Team Trump's forgiveness by offering him new clothes (redemption) in exchange for his tattered rags (last-ditch campaign soul-selling). The man and child at left are leading a sacrificial cow to Trump, who will sacrifice the animal in gratitude to Ba'al for Cruz' return to the fold. The axe will then be used by Trump to execute Cruz, Christie, and the boy, who has annoyed him hugely by pulling on his coat and saying "hey mister, hey mister" endlessly. The man at far right, in the shadows, is Sidney Blumenthal because, you know.

90 I have to admit the prodigal son parable is my least favorite. I find
myself still siding with the loyal son that he got screwed.

Wow. I thought I was the only one....I have to say, though, that as the father reminds the elder son, everything the father owns is the elder son's, meaning that the elder son hasn't really lost anything by his brother's return. I really dislike the modern trend of interpreting the parable in such a way that the elder son is the real sinner - he is rather petulant and unloving towards the end, but that isn't nearly as bad as what his brother did.

I think Jesus included the exchange between the father and the elder son to address our very human tendency to nitpick over who deserves what and lose track of what we should really be focusing on - the return of our brothers to righteousness. Of course, since we are all in prodigals at some level...

My brother rejected hard work and decency a good part of his life including two prison stints.

The 2d time he came home broken, wounded, and driven to succeed.

My dad and I helped him get the last 1/3d of his house down payment after he showed good faith in shepherding the majority.

He thinks it was a *loan* it is a gift.

Thing is my father was very quiet about giving my brother his half of the third...

He gave it to me without telling me what to do and watched what I did do.

Broken or not they are our blood.

117 Actually it's funny, now that I think about it. In the parable the good son wasn't really out much of anything--he was still out ahead. 125 The story of salvation and forgiveness; surely the two hardest concepts in Christianity. Whenever I read this parable, my initial thought is 'dang, how unfair is that?' but with some reflection I do realize, as many here have said, at any given time, we are all the prodigal son. We have all strayed and sinned but somewhere deep down inside, we are all looking for redemption and salvation that cannot be found in material things, only in Christ (if you are a believer, that is).

Anyone else notice that Paul RINO-an came out of yesterday's meeting with Trump, and immediately started talking to the press about... not the meeting, but about some obscure item of legislation to address the opioid overdose epidemic?

(Yeah, yet another goddamned Big Government drug law will surely fix the problem. The thousands we've got already that haven't fixed the problem since the 1920s? One too few, that's all that's wrong. This one's the winnah. Bank on it.)

Eventually some reporter said, "Um, Mr. Speaker, how about the, you know, get-together with Mr. Trump?"

Ryan then quickly mumbled the expected boilerplate about how great and awesome the meeting was, how cordial Trump had been. And that was that.

I understand this from the God and his forgiveness, and His welcoming the lost back to his Grace angle, I do, It's subtlety mentioned that he gets no more inheritance too.

But a "fatted calf" in this sense is no small sacrifice. I don't see the elder brother as greedy or resentful. I see him as treated like someone of lesser importance since he did NOT stray. Returning to Grace is not above staying in the flock to me.

Quite.

I am the dutiful son even though I am a lost Ohioan wandering from place to place.

My father is not a devout man, but sinful though he has been he is a cagey wise man who grasped that lesson.

He hoped I would do the right thing, and later he told me he could have died the instant my brother showed him the fixer-upper he had bought saying "Dad Sven just lent me 4000 dollars" and been happy.

Why?

I had told Dad I had loaned him 2000 dollars I would likely never see again.

Dad correctly figured I had silently doubled it.

My brother and I almost killed each other several times when we were kids.

Dad knew at that instant we would be okay when he was gone.

153 But a "fatted calf" in this sense is no small sacrifice.

Hmmm, not necessarily. I suspect that the fatted calf would have been killed that year anyway, as it would have been a surplus animal (i.e., not retained for plowing or breeding) and surplus animals were typically killed in the fall to save on fodder costs. That is how it was done in colder climates, anyhow. In any case, they couldn't keep it indefinitely, as it would grow old and tough.

I think that it was a matter of honor - when and for whom it was killed - rather than the cost of the calf itself.

I think when you read it a long with the parable of the Good Shepherd it makes more sense. The shepherd protects all of his flock and when one is missing he will search until he finds it. And the joy the shepherd feels when the lost one is found and all is well is cause for great celebration. He doesn't love the ones who didn't get lost any less or the one that was lost anymore.....He loves them all the same......that's the beauty.....

not really, life expectancy was so low because of the very high infant death rates. If you made it past childhood, then you could often get 60 years. A 'U' shaped distribution.

"'Depending on how the courts rule on the bathroom issues, it may be a pretty valuable tool to have on the female students if they go to the bathroom, not knowing who may come in,' board member Chuck Hughes said in referencing concerns about HB2, according to the Salisbury Post.

The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education agreed this week to remove language that kept students from taking defensive sprays onto campuses. The district is located about 40 miles northeast of Charlotte."

... just as Barack Obama has spurred on the gun industry, now, he is promoting the sale of defensive "pepper spray" for bathroom users.

183 I never get this. It was a mere 33 years, and then he got him back. And it was never as if NT Father was separated from his son any more than you and I are.

---

you can look at it a number of ways.

God had to endure watching his Son suffer horribly, which was in a sense Himself.

God could have ended it at any moment. but allowed it to continue for a greater good.

Jesus was a man, but without sin. Thus his execution was entirely unjust. And he accepted that to redeem us.

i'm sure that there are additional dimensions.

Posted by: rickb223 at May 13, 2016 10:10 AM (Yu4ah)

It is not that the prodigal son went off and did everything he wanted and then came back. The prodigal son came back to put himself under the rule of his father again, and the father welcomed him.
Without redeeming there is no redemption. Without the father's acceptance there is no reason to change. If damnation is forever, there is no recovery from a false step.

Granted, I suspect his brothers later cornered him and informed him that if he ever dicked them over again and broke their father's heart it would go really hard on him. But that is proper brotherly concern.

Yes. The father tells him, "Everything I have is yours."
The prodigal got his inheritance early and spent it. He ain't getting another. What is left goes to the big brother.

Also, the prodigal picks himself up from the pig sty and walks all the way home. He recognizes that he is not fit to be a son anymore. He only wants to be hired by his father as a lowly servant, and even that much he knows would be an act of mercy on dad's part.

The father does run out to greet him but it's the prodigal himself who has to take the long walk from sty to home.

If you're a dutiful child and suddenly through no fault of your own,

find yourself cast into this role because of an asshole sibling in the process of destroying themselves and the family in the process,

then all the attention and resources and time and love spent on the asshole-

can feel like a lack of love of your parents for you-

because you are doing the right thing as best as you can (imperfect though we all are)-

why else but lack of love or, at the least, respect for the difference in treatment?

My number one least favorite is Abraham and Isaac. Read the whole bible and tell me that one doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. It's completely out of place. Every time I read it or hear it I can't help but think: The kind and loving God I was taught about would NEVER do an awful thing like this.

Look at how I took the lesson.

I was a hot mess as a teen, I joined the Army pulled the fade (especially from my maternal family) b/c I did not want to drag them into the hole with me.

Part of my inspiration was "the Prodigal Son" which says indirectly if you're going to be a hot mess leave the family to make its living and rot away from them.

I straightened out, and slowly drifted back into orbit.

Ever since I was a yout' in the pews, I've found that the standard of Jesus' teachings about the nature of God was a good yardstick for measuring truth.

Never having been a Biblical Fundamentalist, I peruse scripture looking for truth, not presuming it's all factual.

Questioning not just the Absoluteness of the Bible and some Christians' interpretations thereof, I've even been told I can't be a Christian. By some standards, I'm not; fine; I leave whether that matters up to Christ.

But seems t'me like God is consistent but our view of God has grown, however gradually, over time.

Reminds me of what Mark Twain said about how, when he was a young fellow, his dad was the stupidest man alive, but when Twain grew up, it was amazing how much the old man had learned...!

One of the more curious things that I read somewhere about WWII was that Japanese officers were found to be on average, shorter than their troops. It's thought that the Japanese military schools were partly to blame. They underfed the kids from a VERY young age as a way to make them tough, but that also stunted their growth. The rank and file Japanese conscript soldier didn't go through that period of near-starvation.

If I might mix metaphors here, and as Ace and I have discussed at length....

We are defacto God's experiment and provative on morality.

We cannot prove our moral and spiritual worthiness without adversity and scourging.

We are made, literally to suffer.

That is not God's lack of mercy or love it is the nature of the game.

We walk this mortal coil being tested and testing others and we are judged and embraced or found wanting.

There is no mercy without accepting that the only path to grace is following as best we are able in His son's footsteps.

We are all doomed to fail, and I truly believe God grades those who *beg* forgiveness for our stumbles on a fairly steep curve.

That curve exists because we are an interlocking test bed.

It's how I made my peace with the equation anyway.

God loves, man kills.

283 Book of Job is a theological dialectic. Similar to the Bhagavad Gita in that the story is just a frame for allowing the characters to discuss ideas and convey doctrine.

The Zoroastrian influence of an "equal" God and Devil is in evidence in the framing scene, but past that, the real meat is all the friends of Job bringing to him their ideas of why he's fallen on hard times, and how he refutes each bad idea.

It's most interesting in that he really doesn't find a solid answer - and in terms of God & Devil just playing dice with his life, no wonder - there isn't one. But it's valuable for the parsing of what are the wrong ideas.

But what do I know? I'm just some Moron on the interwebz.

Amen.

Less wordy than my explanation but the same.

God promises us toil and pain and then mercy.

Satan rebelled because God loves the songs and praises from man more than angel.

"Why do you love them more than us we are perfect and closer to you?"

"Because that man chooses to sing, you were made to."

290 Where do the stats come from regarding life expectancy in ancient times? I know we have some scant records, and obviously we've disinterred countless bodies for archaeological research over the years, but do we have enough data to reach a conclusion? How is it calculated? I've always took it as a warning. God helps everyone. Even people whose behavior you despise.

I've always took it as a guide. Take some of your reward now. (Parable of the good? son.) Don't save it all for heaven.

Also wealth from God is a gift. You can't work your way into heaven.

301 Had never really thought about it this way, but my eldest son has been trying out for the part of the prodigal. Let's just say he has "impulse control issues".

Came very close to going to prison, but I spent a ton of money on lawyers, pretty much lost my job taking him back and forth to court and attorney meetings etc. and despite all that he has up and taken off and (so far) returned weeks or months later. Yet despite what he has put his mother and I through we always welcome him back and are happy to see him alive and (usually) well. But we no longer trust or rely on him in any meaningful way. At least not yet, I still have hope.

I take great pains to make sure his younger brother gets as much of my time and attention as he wants.

Like Job, we do have a right to be angry about this!

One of the things that sets the Bible above all other religious texts is this acceptance of our struggling with God. It's more than accepted, it's embraced. The very word "Israel," IIRC, means "to wrestle with God."

Biblical figures are always questioning and second-guessing God, to one degree or another. From Job to Jonah to confused Peter to doubting Thomas --- always, always struggling.

Here's a dose of theodicy:

All you people who love your wayward kids, those kids will live on after your wise words and forgiving hearts are gone. Who knows, they may commit the ultimate sin and die unrepentant? It's not impossible -- and if it doesn't happen in your, it could happen in someone else's and doubtless has.

So the God-obeying, God-loving parent dies and goes to "heaven" knowing that their beloved kid is suffering horribly for all eternity. Was that what God promised his faithful?

The day I left home
I knew I'd broken His heart.
And I wondered then, if things could ever be the same.
Then one night
I remembered His love for me.
And down that dusty road ahead I could see -
It was the only time,
It was the only time I ever saw Him run.

And then

He ran to me,
He took me in His arms,
Held my head to His chest,
Said "My son's come home again!"
Lifted my face,
Wiped the tears from my eyes,
With forgiveness in His voice He said
"Son - do you know I still love You?"

429 No, the story of the Prodigal son is not an analogy between the US government and its citizen. The Government did not create the heavens and the earth. The Govern t does not love us and the government is not a forgiving entity either.

Yes, it would be better to use the word "just" today.
Many, if not most, people today confuse "good" with "nice."
And many do not understand that certain good things, like mercy and forgiveness, are meaningless, even evil, without the priority of justice.

I agree

Here's the thing, if a Caitlin Jenner wants to use the women's restroom, fine.

It's the child molesters and creepers that ren't transgender I would be concerned about hanging out in the women's restrooms.

But then how do you make sure the person is transgender or not?

You can't win and the only acceptable solution for the gay mafia is to allow women to likely be sexually assaulted all to placate .0001% of the population so they don;t feel excluded.

440 I agree with Soona. The bible gives you spiritual rules to improve your life.

Read Luke 11:05, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread.

The lesson is to pray like you are an impolite demanded. Beat on the door and demand three loaves.

"For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."

But not for the nice guy. Want gainful employment. Ask for it over and over again. Pound on that spiritual door. Suggestion is that you also ask that you enjoy doing the job.

446 It's added on extrapolation which I don't find convincing at all. If Mary had to be without sin to carry Christ then why not Mary's mother all the way back to Eve? If Mary could be without sin in the womb of a sinful mother, then why is God unable to conceive Jesus in the womb of a sinful Mary?

---

yes, it is a deduction.

But it isn't that she had to be without sin, but that it was proper that she be so. It goes along with concepts of being the new Eve and the Arc of the new covenant. She actually carried the Word of God within her.

Mary's mother did not need to be sinless since she did not carry God. Only Mary did.

Organized religion is doing the best it can. But Satan owns all organizations of people. Remember. Satan offered Jesus the world. It was a true offer because Satan owns the world in a legal sense. People squandered their inheritance just like the Prodigal Son. Satan was who the payed it to. But that is human Satan legalities. Means the same as mud pies to God.

455 But then why do you then turn around and say that only Jesus was without sin. Saying that Mary was without sin kind of puts her up there on the same level of Jesus. Is that why Catholics seem so confused on who to actually worship?

---

We can all be without sin. If we have a good confession we are without sin. Likewise baptism removes our sins. We must be sinless to go to heaven. But we cannot remain sinless.

Adam/Eve could've remained sinless, after the Fall it was impossible. Jesus was Sinless because he was God.

By a special act of God, Mary was created without original sin (in the same state as Adam/Eve) and was able to live a sinless life. So Mary still needed to be redeemed from Original Sin, still needed Jesus to save her, she just had it done early.

Only by disregarding the generally accepted definition of degree. A 1/390 part of a circle's circumference is not a 1/360 part of a circle's circumference. A rose-by-any-other-name is a rose but a degree is 1/360.

461 Uh, statutes in Catholic churches are representations. No Catholic prays "to" a statue or thinks the statue is God.

If you didn't have those Papists making statues, you wouldn't have, oh, Michaelanglo's "Pieta."

Many glorious works were destroyed during the Reformation by the Protestant version of the Taliban.*

*Note I do not say all Prods were or are like Taliban. The church destroys and those who busted stained glass windows and lovely artworks were.

We ask Mary for her intercession. You might not like that, but it's different from worshipping her. Catholics do not consider her a goddess.

Mary is the one thing keeping me in the Catholic Church at this point. I found her a wonderfully comforting and kind figure when I was a child - this nice Jewish mom who would go for bat for me when I did something wrong. And what Jewish son would ever deny his mom?

Yeah, I know you don't believe it. That's fine. The Reformation is long over and we are free to believe what we want.

463 I love Murillo. Thanks for this beautiful example of his command of color, composition, and narrative. The Prodigal is sincerely repentant; the father comforting, the preparations for the feast (fatted calf) and the son's return (the clean clothes and the ring for his finger) are being brought to him. If you think this is wonderful, his paintings of the Holy Family are just moving and beautiful.

I think the Person who told this story was making a point about forgiveness. This passage in Luke is part of Christ's response to the accusation "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.'

First He talks about the lost sheep, then the lost coin and finally the lost son, who returns. He stresses that the lost son is truly repentant: no sense of entitlement, only remorse, shame and repentance. The father rejoices because his son, who was dead to him in so many ways, has come back to life - just like the sinners with whom He ate.

He was wise to talk about the objection of the Older son, too because it's natural to feel like that. There's no hint that the Prodigal son gets more inheritance back and no hint that the Older Son is shorted (he could ask for a goat to feast with his friends)...and also that it's normal for Older Son to feel slighted. He didn't say "don't feel like that."

Personally, I like Luke 11:46; it ain't just about lawyers.
