Have a great weekend!

1 Apparently AT&T is responding to cord-cutting by placing data limits on internet access....unless, of course, you buy their overpriced cable service (which then gets divvied up amongst a lot of odious people like ESPN and MSNBC).

Go over the limit, they charge you.

12 Got an hour to kill before heading to the Club Lacrosse National Championship games (Women's D1 and D2) where I will be a "behind the scenes" guy, operating a camera, maybe doing a couple stand-up interviews before and after the games. Beautiful sunny day, should be a breeze. If by any chance some HB2 protestors show up, I will ensure that they get zero camera time unless they go full Trigglypuff.

13 I got willowed:

No difference in the tables between tequila and bourbon.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at May 07, 2016 08:24 AM (vvmPQ)

Supposedly, the advantage lies in little goodies present due to drinking high quality one hundred percent agave tequila. Not just the calorie count.

Mostly, the agave sugars and congeners present (or absent.)

I will say that when my preferred tipple was tequila on the rocks, squeeze of lime.

I never had a hangover.

Anyway-

if you can't believe the National Board of Tequila Distillers and Retailers-

who can you believe?

Posted by: naturalfake the Optimist! at May 07, 2016 08:41 AM (oU3Bb)

14 Dang, willowed.
Here is my no fail grad present:
To those grads going away to college, I got a laundry basket and filled it with towels, detergent, container of counter wipes, etc., microwave popcorn and other snacks, and a roll of quarters. The kids would always say: um, thanks? at first, but the first time they came home, would say how much they loved the stuff.

56 Today the project car (2006 Mountaineer) gets the replacement 3rd row seats. Junkyard find of the whole assembly for just over $200. Aftermarket seat actuators for the power seats are $275 each, so this was a big savings. New carpeting is here and hopefully will get in this weekend too.

Struggled to take the drivers door card off yesterday. If I had only googled it and watched the video, it would have been totally easy.

Live and learn.

Re-dyed the steering wheel and sealed it successfully. Came out like new for about $25. This was opposed to having it recovered for $275 or buying new for $710.

Thinking about putting the radio/sat nav system in this weekend. Could be a problem because manufacturers started "keying" the radios to the vehicles with a code to prevent theft. Might end up paying the dealer big bucks just to punch in a few numbers.

Paint work came out acceptable. Looking at new wheels, but they're not essential.

Put new gas struts on the hood. Tailgate ones seem ok.

I expect this is going to be a nice car in about 2 weeks.

To make it worse, he uses his work email for personal emails too because even though he has a personal email account, he rarely checks it because he is too busy with the other.

For sure. From the outset the Anzio deal was undersupplied, landing craft that had been allocated initially, were diverted to England for the eventual Normandy invasion.

There was also a fair amount of political meddling (coughChurchillcough) to encourage the military to do something (anything) so that the pols could point to a military "success". It bogged down very quickly and even with the second wave that my dad was part of we were barely able to hold the status quo in Feb and Mar.

I think the 5th Army push up the mainland and the upcoming breakout at Anzio were meant as a distraction from Normandy at some level.

So this morning my mom calls me at 6:30 to let me know he weighed 7 and a half pounds. This news couldn't wait till, say, 7:30? 7:45? Is the baby going somewhere?

And yesterday my soon-to-be-mister called me at 6:15 to tell me he was going to buy me a hanging basket, and what flowers do I like in a hanging basket. Seriously? The hanging basket store opens at 6:15 and you want to be the first in line?

There are 24 hours in a day and apparently I can only receive phone calls at the crack of dawn.

I also have a Beretta .25 and know how to use it, so if you make me mad I might shoot you with it, and then we would both be mad. Remember "Bachelors -- Then and Now"?

"You gotta get up, you gotta get up..." Every guy in my dad's outfit knew the good part of the lyrics during the Louisiana Maneuvers. "Some day I'm going to murder the bugler/One day they're going to find him dead/And then I'll get that other pup/the one who wakes the bugler up/and spend the rest of my life in bed."

Every scout in the troop learned it spontaneously, when I was the rise-and-shiner.

Anzio was because the Allies were stuck trying to move up the Italian peninsula. Monte Cassino was part of that being stuck.

The amphibious landing at Anzio was a success and there was very little German resistance. Unfortunately, it was not exploited immediately and the Germans reacted pretty quickly, keeping the Allies in the small area that hey had occupied when the German response arrived. General MacArthur knew how to exploit an amphibious landing behind the enemy force like he did at Inchon. General Lucas, apparently did not.

154 Hard to overstate what a membership card the turtleneck sweater -- not the shirt, which was tres chic but only anti-tie -- became as the Old Folk movement went through its Simon/Garfunkel moment and got all poetic and electric. Many's the night I sweat my ass off to look like a poet. "Real" poets wore them because, hello, no central heating in garrets.

The turtleneck "dickie" has its uses, in real world. If you're going, like, logging, with just a wool shirt, that neck closure is a godsend. In class, not so much. Noteworthy that those fake shirt-fronts for formal wear were also called a dickie. It's odd what you remember from books you read many years ago. I just recalled that Johnny Nolan, the handsome but irresponsible drunkard dad in "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," wore dickies with his formal tux. The book is set in the slums of Brooklyn in the early 1900's and Johnny was a singing waiter. He had to wear a tux to work but was too poor to afford a nice shirt so he bought dickies. I remember being struck as a teen by the fact he was a guy with a wife and kids, but couldn't afford a nice white shirt.

175 "Gaiters" I guess can refer to any gap-cover. The accordion pleats that cover CV joints and deDion-Bouton half-shafts are called gaiters (learned that from Ian Fleming!). It was also slang for what's sometimes called a prophylactic.

I have a set of the early WWII kind; they are a bitch to put on but nothing like puttees. Puttees with clay applied were probably better in wet and snow, although nothing could have stood up to what happened in the trenches. There is a whole chapter of history on the consequences of the slow deployment of shoe-pac boots. Most troops in the Ardennes Counter-Offensive had what amounted to dress shoes with gaiters, and a standing order to change to dry socks several times a day to avoid trench foot -- while the VI Panzer Armee was coming right at you, and you didn't know where the rest of your regiment got to. Report with "frozen feet" and you'd get care, in extreme cases a Purple; claim trench foot and you were court-martialed.

198 Third-season Man From UNCLE...

I don't remember the sequence/timing of deterioration, but I remember it getting funkier. The gadgets and campiness were supposed to be adjunct to a real spy drama, but took center stage. (At least this gave us Kirby's Agents of SHIELD comics.)

Batman was best in its first season (again IIRC) - they had the campy biff bam pow stuff, but tried to be semi-serious (1950s comicbook) Batman. By 2nd season the biff bam pow that made it famous affected the show so it degenerated into insipid self-parody. (Ruined the early attempt to make a serious Batman in the comics, too.)

But this wasn't just a 1960s thing. Go back to the George Reeves Superman series, and there, too, you'll find the first season was semi-serious stories, Supes v gangsters, like the radio show. Then it degenerated into "Lois suspects Clark is Superman" and "Clark winking at the fourth wall" silliness.

Ah, but then, there's the Monkees, which started off as mere Beatles movie mimickry (the pre-fab four). Then the boys started insisting on doing their own songs but I don't think I watched the middle-period shows. Finally, by the final season when they realized they were being canceled, they went truly acid trip, culminating in the surreal Head movie.

I think as far as series' changing tone, the Monkees wins.

All of this IIRC from long-ago original viewing. YMMV and WTF apply.

(Washes hands to get the nostalgia stench off)

I think that happens to anybody who has spent a significant amount of time (which most of us have, once we reach a certain point in our lives) with pop culture fiction.

The ol' saying, there are only so many stories... well, it's true. There are. And once you've heard them enough, it's just going to be dull.

I guess it's not fair going back in time, they don't have the luxury of new material, which can at least TRY not to repeat the old stuff. But the old stuff... it's been repeated too many times that it can't do anything about that.

If I needed another car, in fact, I think I would look for a 1985 Saab. Had one once, loved it and always regretted trading it in. Or another 1999 Jeep Cherokee, just because the car is so darned handy (and reliable).

Newer cars just come with a whole host of features that I don't want or need.

My state currently has ads running encouraging people to sing up as fosters. No longer do you need to be married, or own a home. Anyone can be a foster. That is the emphasis of the ad.
Same with homosexual and transgenders being able to adopt. All children are now game to be placed in these brave new homes.

Short of being diagnosed as a sociopathic murderer, all mentally ill people are now eligible to adopt or foster children.

228 Two interesting stories about Europe at JihadWatch.

1. Blonde Austrian woman gets manhandled and beaten up on a train platform. Two Afghan men robbed beat and robbed her. Police told her not to go out after 8pm, not to wear any clothes that could be seen as revealing and, oh yea, you need to dye your blonde hair black.

2. In Germany, a political official has decided that "finger penetration" is not rape, and changed an official police report. Politics have dictated that "finger penetration" is no longer considered rape, even though the law might say differently.

231 Florida is the reason I get so impatient with people from Portland and Austin.

If you've ever been to Portland OR, or Austin TX, you've probably seen the "Keep Portland/Austin Weird" bumperstickers that all the conformist little hipsters put on their Priuses to show what free spirits unbound by convention they are.

I submit that if you have to have a bumpersticker begging people to keep a place weird, it's not really weird.

FLORIDA IS WEIRD. And I've never seen a bumpersticker demanding that it remain so.

When people all over the country start responding to surreal news stories with "Yep. Portland," then and only then can Portland call itself weird. And Austin should just give up. It's not even as weird as Fort Worth.

In most States in the US it is considered sexual assault. The beating beforehand makes it first degree sexual assault and felony aggravated assault.

Even when I was young the USMJ was clear, it was rape and the wording was specific "penetration how slight constitutes an offense".

271 "The Federal Reserve is an NGO but it is actually controlled so much by the government that it may as well be a government organization."

It's years since I've been close to this, so feel free to correct me.

The Fed is a collection of twelve banks which have the magical property of being able to have liabilities that bear no interest expense -- dollars. Which means it has great power to buy and hold financial assets.

There's a law that says that the Fed can't buy new Treasury debt directly from the Treasury, so the Treasury sells to the Prime Dealer Banks who flip it to the Fed. Which is a big mechanism for how we've financing our deficits.

The Fed's balance sheet has grown enormously because of this and may be tapped out from further expansion. Since the crisis the Fed has also been buying things other than US debt, like Fannie and Freddie debt and exotic mortgage assets. The Fed has also done all it can to keep US interest rates low. Without this remarkable degree of intervention, who knows what would have happened to the US residential market since 2008.

The Fed has also gone long on maturities. Were interest rates to rise not all that much, on a mark-to-market basis the Fed would become balance sheet broke. That's because the left side of its balance sheet (assets) looks remarkably like a 1980s savings and loan.

What I can't figure out is who owns all this US debt (it can't just be the Chinese) and how it's affecting Big Bank excess reserves, and how it's all getting funded. Simple cynical answer may just be that US savings are in effect getting put into US debt instead of business loans. Big Banks are going along because they've had a litigation/regulatory gun put to their heads.

Don't know where this goes. Difficult to unwind, easier to drift. But the Fed has no bullets left to deal with the next official recession.

Once again Trump says something that sounds idiotic, noted in the sidebar here: "ask creditors to take a haircut on [US] outstanding debts" but he could be on to something.

Some think that going bankrupt to revise your debts is immoral, but it can make economic sense even for creditors. Right now all this debt is choking growth which can have momentous long-term consequences.

The net effect of how we resolved the 2008 crisis was to save the asses of Big Bankers and Current Home Owners. Handled differently, Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein might have been left with nothing but a barrel to wear. And your typical home owner might have been wiped out. But this wasn't free. It's kept the prices of lots of things higher than they'd otherwise have been.
