Quote of the Day I - Leftism in a Nutshell Edition

"We obviously have to do a whole lot more to avoid what they call the 'school to prison pipeline' and replace it with a 'cradle to college pipeline' and that really starts early, and it starts early with working with families, working with kids, building up community resources. I'm very supportive of the mayor's proposal to tax soda to get universal preschool for kids. I mean I don't, you know, we need universal preschool, and if that's a way to do it, that's how we should do it."

-- Hillary Clinton at a campaign event in Philadelphia

Quote of the Day II - Euphemism Edition

I'm not sure, but I suspect that once upon a time "juvenile delinquent" was a liberal euphemism for "young criminal." As often happens, however, eventually even the euphemism is thought to be too harsh, and so a better one has to be found. And so one has: This Obama-administration press release yesterday talked a lot about "justice-involved youth."

-- Roger Clegg

Quote of the Day III

Some of my nurses were great - concerned about my comfort and stress - but other hospital workers were indifferent. When the customer doesn't pay, customer service rarely matters.

-- John Stossel on his treatment for lung cancer

What economic lessons can we learn about the $15 minimum wage law from an $8 per pound minimum beef price law'?

Despite what we hear from labor unions and the "Fight for $15" crowd, employees compete not against employers for higher wages, but against other employees. And it's also the case that employers compete against other employers for the best employees. It's like that in every market: buyers (employers) always compete against other buyers (employers), and sellers (employees) always compete against other sellers (employees).
Economist Walter E. Williams has used the following example to illustrate the competition described above between unskilled and skilled workers by looking at the market for different qualities of beef (see examples here, here, and here). Suppose that hamburger sells for $4 per pound and sirloin steak sells for $8 per pound. Hamburger is a much lower quality variety of beef compared to sirloin steak, but can attract a significant number of buyers who choose hamburger over the higher quality option for the 50% savings in price. Likewise, many employers may choose lower quality, unskilled workers over higher skilled employees for the significant savings in labor costs.

But now suppose the government imposes a "$8 per pound minimum beef price law." In that case, most shoppers who buy beef will then purchase more sirloin steak and less hamburger because the lower quality meat has lost it main weapon to successfully compete against higher quality sirloin steak - a significantly lower price that compensates for the lower quality. Result? Hamburger sales will suffer due to the "minimum beef price law" and sirloin steak sales will increase. Just like in the labor market, a $15 an hour minimum wage will remove the most effective weapon that unskilled workers currently have to compete against skilled workers - the ability to work for a lower wage. Result? Employment opportunities for unskilled and limited-experience workers will contract, while employment opportunities for skilled workers will increase.

Yet Another Thing to Worry About: The Earth's Magnetosphere Collapsed in Space on Saturday For Two Hours

This has gotten a lot of play on certain rather excitable and paranoid websites but it seems to be legit. No magnetosphere would be a Very Bad Thing and even a magnetic pole flip would be a whole lot of pain and trouble.

This magnetic field, so important to life on Earth, has weakened by 15 per cent over the last 200 years. And this, scientists think, could be a sign that the Earth's poles are about to flip.

Experts believe we're currently overdue a flip, but they're unsure when this could occur.

If a switch happens, we would be exposed to solar winds capable of punching holes into the ozone layer.

The impact could be devastating for mankind, knocking out power grids, radically changing Earth's climate and driving up rates of cancer.

Why Movie Trailers Now Begin With Five-Second Ads For Themselves

But where previous metahype promoted key dates in a marketing campaign -- like official trailer releases and fan celebrations -- the burgeoning trend of teasers within trailers exist purely to retain the viewer's attention in that exact moment. The teaser within the trailer speaks to a moment in which we have so many distractions and choices that marketers must sell us on giving a trailer three minutes of our time. This practice isn't limited to movie trailers, though. Next time you're on Facebook, pay attention to how the popular videos in your newsfeed are edited. Is the most interesting image the first thing you see? And does that trick get you to stop scrolling and watch?

College Runner Stages Incredible, Last-Gasp Comeback In 4x400 Relay

The girl in red is so far behind on the last leg that you don't even see her until near the end.

Apparently the reason the girls are so slow is that this race was at the end of the day and they had already run several events before it. The girl in red, Phil Healy, explained her win this way:

It was crazy because we didn't expect to win and I only decided to run 20 minutes before the event. I had ran (sic) in the 100 and 200 metres and one of the girls just asked would I fill in on the last leg and I said 'throw me in and I'll see what I can do'.

Leftist dictators like Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela like to bandy about how they are democratically elected and that therefor anything they do must be legitimate, and any opposition is illegitimate... until the people turn against them.

138 "We already have universal pre-k."

And study after study shows that by age seven or so, it's impossible to distinguish the academic performance of kids who attended pre-K from the control group of those kids who did not do so.

Funny thing, though. The self-proclaimed "party of science" aren't too inclined to pay attention to that particular line of scientific research.

The one meritorious policy-based argument I have heard in favor of pre-K came from a young teacher who had taught in what are discreetly referred to as "urban" classrooms. She doesn't think that pre-K has any lasting academic or cognitive benefit, and that's not her argument. What she said is that in a lot of cases, the residences of the feral underclass aren't safe places for small kids, and sticking them in pre-K removes them from a risk of abuse, injury, and death. That is, a social-work case for the policy, rather than an academic-attainment case for it.

I argued that what this says is that we need policies to discourage the feral underclass from having children in the first place. This is pretty far outside the Overton Window for a public school teacher, as you might expect. She was shocked. At least someone said it.

That's how Lefties work. If they make a law, it's to benefit their friends, family, or donors who produce whatever essential widget is now required by law. Or they create more government jobs, so that the government unions will rake in even more money from dues and plow it back into political campaigns to keep them in office.

It's corruption all the way down.

The more people go to college, the more worthless a college education becomes. If everyone has one, it's no longer a leg up on the competition, it's a standard. Degree inflation helps nobody, and the debasing of standards that has made it possible for more and more people to graduate from college has further undermined the value of a degree.

And if you'll permit me some woe is me whining. I just had a humdinger of a flare with this damnable rheumatoid arthritis. It was all the running around with the folks this past month.

Last night, I got the chills and worse, ran up a 101.1F fever. I was pretty sure it was the RA flaring, and not some other bug or something. It was. This morning, I couldn't get out of bed. Every damn joint in my body, including my jaw joints were inflammed and sore. Any weight on any of them, and well, if screaming would've done any good, I would have.

Now, I had to take a piss twice, just had to, nothing to do but do it, and I thought I was going to die. My feet, well, they were red all over -- every little joint down there was throwing a fit. Weight on the heels felt like, well, I can't describe it. But boy did it hurt. Until you have something like this, you wouldn't believe joints could hurt this badly.

Realistically, most people have no business in college. None. Evidence? They could perfectly well do the job(s) they end up in with what they knew in high school. Put another way, their college degree is effectively useless, and obtaining it was a waste of time and money.
The liberals love to maintain the fiction that everyone should go to college. For my part, I like to maintain the fiction that everyone should go to the NFL and/or MLB.

But an increase of electromagnetic radiation from the big glowing ball of fire in the sky couldn't possibly impact the climate as much as a Ford F150. Deniers.

259 231: Well, I have been around hospitals, nursing homes, and doctors' offices a hell of a lot this last month, so I was considering the possibility it could be something else.

But is all seems consistent with what I have, and know I have, rheumatoid arthritis, and a humdinger of a flare up brought on by stress and lack of sleep (with this stuff, you need a lot of sleep, and your circadian rhythm gets all weird).

The fever is gone today. RA is an autoimmune disease, and your immune system going crazy, thinking there's an infection to fight (which is your own damn tissue), and running a fever during a flare is what it does.

I've got an emergency stash of prednisone and some other crap for these events, which I did take. I hate prednisone, but it will do the trick when inflammation is running amok.

I also took more opiods in one dose than I've ever done before. I was worried, but it was so bad. Hell, I don't think even that much seemed to phase me. Well, it smoothed out the peaks, but the baseline was still there.

So, everything was consistent with a bad RA flareup, and not something else. So far.

They will get madder and nastier with each other with this that any political topic. There was a forum I used to hang out with, science and space stuff. Politics were banned from discussion completely because of the nastiness, which management didn't want. But there at the last, they were thinking of just banning the rocket/booster subforum as well.

You wouldn't believe how nasty people could get it. I made the mistake of posting some little opinion on this when something was in the news, and I got attacked as though I'd, well, insulted his mother.

I didn't take it personally, nor emotionally at all. And because of it, I could just look at it objectively, and I was just amazed at how worked over this topic people could get.

Passport in the Middle East have been screwed up since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan where jihadists had to turn over their passports to rebel leaders. It got worse when the Iraqis took control of Kuwait and their passport offices and is totally broken now. Not that you asked my advice...but... that's the key. Wait for the response. You've already sent it. Your better judgement said not to send it, but the angst ridden painful nuts in a vice feeling of having a crush drove you to it.

Now just sit back and suffer that wonderful feeling of crush anxiety until your phone alerts you. That terrifying, breathless, yet exhilarating, feel of calling up the text.

Swear you'll back off even though we've both just made a tiny step forward.

Then repeat the above steps. I get that you're leary of the office connection, as you should be. Walk on eggshells at all times. But unless you or her are a subordinate to one or the other, or office policy strictly forbids inter-office romance. You know, I know, everybody who has read your updates on this knows...

You'll keep going until she signals to back off.

So enjoy the pain!

As far as what's going on here in CA related to WD-40, it all has to do with an idiotic VOC limitation foisted upon us clandestinely a while back. They reformulated Simple Green so that it no longer works and smells awful, for one thing. They took the lemon scent out of Joy dishwashing detergent. And there are all sorts of cleaners we simply can no longer get. One-Party Rule.

Hrm, it's up to 0.9 on the dev build now.

It can't comment on blogspot sites. Can't play flash games on Kongregate, and reading PDF files is a pain since that's not integrated with PDF readers (have to download>open file instead of just reading it in browser). Some video sites don't play well with it, though YouTube works.

Outside of that, it handles most of my browsing. Webmail, facebook, etc.

I use it for commenting here because it doesn't freeze up from the ads/scripts. That's a main driver. No need for a NoScript addon just to have basic browsing functionality in a freaking web browser.

380 I once actually won a school foot race in a manner not entirely dissimilar to the video of the Irish relay race.

It was 10th grade gym, and near the end of the semester the teacher made the whole class run a three-mile endurance race against each other. I was, to be honest, in what was called the "retard" group of especially unathletic students, but that didn't matter: the whole class en masse, best and worst, had to do the race. As this was an awful poor school with overcrowded classes, we had 60 students in this one gym class, too.

Well, when the race started, all the showoffs ran out to the front and vied to be in the lead, and then there was a mass of regular students huffing along, and at the tail end were the retards, the fatties and the druggie losers. I was in that group.

But I had one advantage over everyone: forward thinking. Three miles??? I though to myself. Holy shit, that's brutal. Got to pace myself, take it real real slow if I even want to last that long. So I said to myself not to worry about speed at all, just go at the slowest jog, keep comfortable and plan for the long haul.

For the first half of the race, I was either in last place or practically last. First to drop out were the fatties -- couldn't take it. Then the potheads and smokers ran out of lung power -- sat down on the grass and just quit. After that, I was still in last, place, but now last place out of only 40 runners, as 20 had already dropped out.

The final mile and a half were brutal. Most of the sprinters completely ran out of juice and collapsed on the track, panting. Then there were only 20 runners left. And I was still in last.

The final half mile, the survivors were all on their last legs, just dragging and gasping and often slowing to a walk. I was the only one with any kind of "kick" left. So with two laps to go (for me -- I had been lapped by the leaders, and they only had one lap to go) I FINALLY turned on the afterburners and doubled my pace.

By then only about 15 kids were left running (staggering more accurately), and although I was still going ludicrously slow, it was still twice as fast as they were going, and in the final quarter lap I finally caught the main group and passed them all at the finish line.

I was probably the slowest winning three-mile time in history, but it was the one instance I ever actually won a foot race.

Reminds me of when I was in school. Some genius had the bright idea to have a two mile track race on a day that was in the upper 90s, just after a thunderstorm. It was hot, muggy, and if the humidity was any higher, we'd have been swimming.

And here I was, about 30 pounds overweight, and pretty much the butt of every joke in the class. The sprinters all tired out and, being coastal Florida where sweating does not work like it's supposed to, became soggy messes in about a quarter of a lap and slowed to a crawl. Most of the jocks kept up a decent jog and slogged through it, and then there was me, getting lapped constantly.

Alternating between a jog and a brisk walk, I still kept passing the self-anointed cool kids, who couldn't be bothered to care enough to put out any kind of effort. About ten minutes before the end of the class, suffering from severe heat exhaustion, I staggered across the line for the last time and stumbled to the water fountain, and then the showers.

I later heard that the coach lit into the "cool kids" for making fun of me, since I'd put 100% into it and they didn't even bother to try and never finished the run. I may not have won, but I didn't lose, and that was rare enough.

413 When I was about 7 or 8, they were talking about minimum wages on the radio. I asked my mom why Rush was saying we shouldn't raise them, since that didn't make much sense to my younger self, and her response has stuck with me ever since. "If they really worked, they'd have a moral duty to make 'em $40 per hour so we could all be rich."

She was right, of course. The real minimum wage is always zero. If it becomes too uneconomic to do something, people simply stop doing it. There doesn't have to be a McDonalds in every city. There doesn't even have to be a McDonalds anywhere.

Businesses don't have a magic, infinite pool of money that just enables them to double everyone's wages at the drop of a hat. That means that the wage increase gets built into the cost of the product. If the product gets more expensive than the market will bear, the business goes under.

Of course, every business is affected, and everyone whose wages were above the old minimum but were passed up by the new minimum demands a raise to put them about where they were before with respect to the new one...

So the cost of every good and service in the economy goes up, wiping out the gains within a space of weeks. Businesses will not operate at a loss (for long), and you cannot alter reality with the stroke of a legislative pen.

439 A few years ago I did some research on the impact of the minimum wage and its Democrat controlled increase. What I found was that overall unemployment was not appreciably impacted. However, youth unemployment and new hires were severely impacted for several years after an increase.

Personally I believe that a government mandated minimum wage is unconstitutional and in 1905 SCOTUS said a similar law in NY was unconstitutional (Lochner). They also held that the minimum wage itself was unconsitutional in Adkins v. Children's Hospital (1923).

However after FDR humiliated the court they reversed themselves with West Coast Hotel Co. v. Parrish (1937) and ruled minimum wages were just fine and dandy. That can be said to be the end of capitalism in the US.

462 You can't make the minimum wage 'livable.' It will always be the bottom.

Redefining the job being done as being worth a larger number of dollars just devalues the dollars it's incremented in. Cost of living rises. Any artificial gains get eaten up with higher costs.

Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

I'm sure Vic remembers toddling down to the voting booth for Wendell Willkie, but for you young'uns, he was the 1940 GOP candidate for president (even though he was, for all intents and purposes, a RINO's RINO). But in 1936, he was president of the Commonwealth and Southern Corporation, an electric utility holding company. And in that year, he happened to attend a convention in Atlanta.

During the convention, an attendee cornered Willkie and asked, "Remember meeting my wife the last time you were here? Well, she's written a novel and a publisher has accepted it. If it sells enough to make five thousand dollars, we're going to buy a new house."

"Good for her!"
enthused Willkie, well remembering the conventioneer's charming spouse. "You know, I've never done anything like this before, but I'm going to write a letter over my signature to every stockholder in the company and urge them to buy a copy of her book."

And this wasn't just convention bluster. Willkie was as good as his word, and for years thereafter, whenever he happened to run into the conventioneer and his lovely wife, laughingly demanded a cut of the royalties for getting the book off to such a rousing start.

The name of the book? Gone with the Wind.

Takes a while for the first one to take hold.

495 @427

The GOP should advance a bill that will invert the treaty clause like they did for the Iran deal.

Why?

At this point I just really get my jollies at the sophistry on display because I don't expect anything productive to come from this collection of fucktarded assholes.

Indeed. The mid century saw the return of progressivism with a vengeance, and we're just riding the downward curve

499 474 @468 Emmie

Ask them "why just $15-- let's make it $100."
-------------------------------------------------

I asked that question to the socialist daughter of a wealthy friend and she replied that the left was "compromising" with the scumbag right far too often and this was a prime example.

In other words, the left considers that they've won the argument, the minimum wage is a social good, and now we are just bickering over price (a la Churchill's famous retort).

501 If the Obama administration can implement a treaty without the consent of Congress then McConnellface should get into the treaty business. The Republicans of the Senate should negotiate their own treaties. Build their own armed forces. Create a country within a country. We shall call it "Texas".

Don't forget the full unemployment (if you ignore the millions unemployed) and the $15 an hour minimum wage which is sure to create a workers' paradise

"..socialist daughter of a wealthy friend ..."

Ah. One of them. Tell her to get over her entitlement guilt and quit practing her defunct religion-- it's killing those she supposedly wants to help.

505 And while you ignore the millions of unemployed please also ignore all the Obamavilles the homeless have set up outside of most American large cities.

509 Re magnetosphere collapse:

http://www.snopes.com/nasa-reports-magnetosphere-collapse/

Note that having a magnetopause while not having a magnetosphere (as per the claims of the news article) doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetopause

so that basically means that the writer of the article cited doesn't have a clue.

So I'll side with snopes and call bullshit.
