Oh hell, I remember that. And even after it was established what the word actually meant and that Howard was not by any stretch of the imagination making a racial slur, he still lost his job.

This is utter madness.

17 Reviews from 1906:

A reviewer in Philadelphia noted that viewers had laughed at the
painting, which he referred to as "Smiling Sharks", describing the scene
as "a naked negro lying in a boat while a school of sharks [are]
waltzing around him in the most ludicrous manner". Another contemporary
critic wrote that The Gulf Stream "displays a certain diffusion of interest seldom seen in the canvases of [Homer's] best manner."

I gave a copy of that print to my doc, who took early retirement in the face of Obamacare. The guy's a sailor, and familiar with Homer. He named the title of the print as I handed it to him.

At any rate, I explained that I thought the painting was a metaphor for the immediate circumstance, i.e., my tried-and-proven old salt of a doc handing over his practice to a group of kids. My role is that of the fish lying in the boat.

It's time to talk about the truecon right's focus on the aesthetic, because it can't be said often enough, and it cannot continue to be dismissed.

I'm not saying his aesthetic isn't off-putting. I'm saying it's entirely beside the point, because the purpose of the nominee is to accomplish concrete things in government, and wide swaths of the right have talked themselves into the ludicrous idea that because he doesn't tickle their aesthetic fancy, he won't actually do what he's claiming. It's a subtle trick, and a maddening one.

NeverTrumpism's foundational logical fallacy of equating rhetoric with action is an entirely aesthetic criticism. And the flaw in it is that our social customs of etiquette have, like so much else, become a weapon of the left. There is in fact no connection between conformity with the modern American aesthetic of behavior for public officials and any tangible virtue. It's quite the opposite, most especially in government.

You don't like the way Donald Trump talks about "your" issues. Full stop. That's all there is to #nevertrump-ism. This spins off into either not believing his sincerity or not believing he has a grasp of the issues.

This has blown my mind from the beginning because to hit him on his admittedly crude aesthetic is to attack him where he's bulletproof: his iconoclasm, his unique brand of bluster backed up with wealth. It's essentially American. And in spilling so much ink on it, ace and others basically abandoned the field on real policy specifics, which were his greatest weakness. I never understood it.

To call him vulgar is to engage in an aesthetic line of argument.
"vulgar (adj): lacking sophistication or good taste; unrefined."
You love the idea of ending illegal immigration, you just don't like the way he talks about it.

Who does he bully? Other politicians and media members. This should be red meat to the right. Who the fuck cares if he calls politicians and pundits names? Why have you adopted the left's tactic of demanding that everyone conform to a public aesthetic that you don't care if your own man abides by? That serves no purpose but to give cover to cheats and traitors like Obama, Boehner, Corker, Pelosi, Clinton, and their ilk?

60% of Republican women voted for Trump in NY last night. Keep running with the Democrat war on women playbook and the Democrat talking point that he's doomed in November because he's "too vulgar," just like he was doomed in the primary - it is, after all, so aesthetically stylish.

Trump's politics are not incoherent. Our society is incoherent. His message on immigration is simplistic because it has to be. The contradiction is in our current situation, not his proposed solution. To see the right jumping on him over this when he's made the most progress among the general population on this issue in my entire lifetime makes me tear my hair out. AND AGAIN: your defense of this criticism is "well he doesn't really mean it." And that doesn't hold water for me. Why would he say it, hundreds of times, and make enemies among the progressive establishment and literal, violent enemies in Mexico, if he didn't mean it. I find this criticism... incoherent.

You say "his entire history suggests he can't be trusted." This sentence is what made me write all of this. You're criticizing his public persona of bigly bombast and expecting that to stick to his private persona, the man that manages a multi-billion dollar real estate and media empire. His language varies: his behavior does not. This argument is mere oppo research, mere partisanship. Look past your loathing of the man at what he has done in the last 10 months. He is the only remaining candidate with a chance at 1237 delegates, and the clear leader in the pop vote and in states won. He's the standard bearer for the popular revolt against the GOP. If someone you find less distasteful had done it (Scott Walker, for instance, as CT mentioned this morning) you'd have sold all your possessions and gone to join him.

The hour is late. Let go of the leftist aesthetic, and the truecon one too. Focus on what you want out of this election and not how you want it. There is one else.

I found it funny and sad that the media, when covering Bernie's giant rallies in NYC, never emphasized that they were actually open air concerts with some politics thrown in. Get three or four popular bands to show up in a park on a nice afternoon and evening and you'll easily attract 20,000 people in a city the size of NYC. Will they stand in line to vote? maybe not....

200 110---I'm not saying his aesthetic isn't off-putting. I'm saying it's entirely beside the point, because the purpose of the nominee is to accomplish concrete things in government, and wide swaths of the right have talked themselves into the ludicrous idea that because he doesn't tickle their aesthetic fancy, he won't actually do what he's claiming.
--------------------
-His "aesthetic" is not beside the point. In the actual world we live in, where images and memes mean more than objective reality, it IS the point.
-The purpose of the nominee is to get elected. Period.
You are confusing "nominee" with "office-holder."
-What Trump would or would not do in office is of no more interest to me than what my next door neighbor would do, given that their chances of being POTUS are roughly equivalent.
-I am interested in what President Hillary Clinton will do, what her priorities will be, what specific damage she will inflict on us the hardest and the fastest. My only interest in the GOP nominee is how the choice and the margin of her victory will affect the agenda.

There have been more than a few analysts who have said that Bernie supporters will cross over for Trump in the election because of the similarities in trade policy between the two. Polls have shown 30% of Bernie voters have said they will not vote for Hillary.

Unlike Bill Clinton, Hillary gives off the vibe. and it is attractive to the "hate America " crowd. Bill won his election because of the perception(and I think it was real) that he actually likes America

Hillary, does not. She hid it well during the Clinton presidency until Bill handed her the Health Care legislation to try to work on, and her true opinion of this country began to show.

A lot of the left hates this country. But a lot of the Democrat party itself are not America hating communists, but instead, are older, blue collar, what the hell happened to my party voters. As she gets pulled more and more to the left trying to outdo Bernie, she is revealing more and more of that hatred.

What politician with any sense would say something as stupid as 'The guy that killed Trayvon Martin shouldn't have even had a gun".? Only a true communist leftist, left of Obama would say this.

And yet he keeps winning, and is slowly eroding the left's opposition to his candidacy. His memetic power is stronger than the media's. The edifice of the newsmedia in America is crumbling, their legitimacy chipped away by the stream of lies and half-truths and ad-buys during the last two administrations. In allowing themselves to be used for the cheap "win the week's messaging war" bullshit they have diluted their power.

In the end, he will be seen as the lesser of two evils, whether it's Hillary and her technocratic oligarchy he runs against or Bernie's socialist utopia.

Here's my take......

I voting for Trump if he wins. Im voting for Cruz if he wins. If the party nominate anybody else.... I will forever be staying at home.

Both guys are dicks.... but Im Ok with that, because I think... 1.) As bombastic an asshole as Trump is, he'll be doubly bombastic with Democrats if hes in office. 2.) Cruz is a sneaky little shit peeling of delegates using procedure and snookery to steal deleagtes from states that have settled election. Im confident that he"ll be even MORE sneaky using House and Senate rule to confound and flabbergast and outmaneuver Democrats and recalcitrant Republicans.

So... both side of the Trump/Cruz better be fucking sucking it up after the Convention and get with the damn program. For the first time in thirty years we have a shot at really electing an outsider and the only thing thats gonna mess that up is a bunch off butthurt Nevertrumps or a gaggle of butthurt Trumpoids sitting out the election on their sore asses.

Get it together people.

If a shark sees a fish struggling against being reeled in, it's like a big "Eat Me" sign, the shark(s) head directly for it, often getting to it before it's landed. Once on a charter boat, my brother had a big eel about halfway out of the water when a shark jumped out and chopped it in two. He reeled in the head.

Please do not frame the opposition to Trump as some sort of mere petty squabble or trifling disagreement. It is not. It is a profound and principled objection. I think Trump would do great harm to the country were he to be elected. He would not only work with the establishment and thereby cement their legitimacy by making deals with them, he would not only be an unprincipled fraud simply doing whatever he wished without regard to any conviction, but he would inevitably grow the executive power even more than it is now and he would implicate Republicans and, by extension, the conservative movement more deeply into the large leviathan that we have now.

In my view, President Trump would be at least as bad as President Hillary, just in different ways. I'm not inclined to vote for either of them.

358 re: Hillary & de Blasio (wasn't it?) mocking "colored people time" --

When I was very young, 'round these parts, "colored people" was still acceptable speech. (Think: NAACP.)

Of course, back then, even "n!gg3rs" was an ordinary, non-derogatory word.

Then we had to say "Negro." Then we had to use "African-American." Then "Blacks." And then it became "people of color"... although that was more inclusive.

So, full circle, Hillary confirms that it's okay that we're back to using "the coloreds" again?

That's good news, but chest pains are never really just nothing. Angina is not life threatening or deadly (I have that if I am not careful) but its usually a sign of something dangerous going on behind the scenes like blocked arteries, heart problems, etc. So, worth changing a bit in your life, if you can find problems like stress, diet, exercise, etc.

He'll probably be happy today.

I'm sure he's out on the street in front of the Upper East Side Starbucks, high-fiving all the other right wing writers celebrating their big win last night.

The Upper East Side went decidedly for Kasich.

The GOP Establishment prevailed in the only New York City district that means anything. Embarrassment has been avoided and change has thoroughly been defeated. The forces of the Status Quo have prevailed.

Now, on to the convention.

391 Treasury will also announce that it plans to replace former President
Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill with Harriet Tubman, the sources said.
There will also be changes to the $5 bill to depict civil rights era
leaders.

This is so sad.
Our money will become just as politicized, and as silly, as the various public school and post office names. Navy carrier named after farming labor activist Cesar Chavez? Sure why not? Let's put Margaret Sanger on the dime, Malcolm X on the quarter, and Harvey Milk on the $2 bill while we're at it.

397 I was listening to the BBC on Sirius in the car. They were interviewing Hailey Barber about the current state of the Republican party. What Barber said made sense until he blamed the election of Democrat Terry McAuliffe as governor of Virginia on Ted Cruz and the government shut down. I wonder if he really believes that. Perhaps the Beltway insiders just refuse to accept the idea that Ken Cuccinelli was outspent 5 to 1 and still lost by only 2%. If so, they are even more isolated in their bubble than I had thought. More likely, Barber is just trying to diffuse some of the anger at the Republican party establishment and redirect it at Cruz by lying about what happened.
