I really recommend the "Red Empire" documentary on youtube (originally done in '91.) Robert Conquest is the presenter and his book "The Great Terror" is a great read on the Stalinist period. Although "Great" is subjective. It is a massive crime that does not even get a tenth of the attention it deserves.
In the documentary he points out that his initial estimates for lives lost due to the famines and purges was on the order of 40 million lives lost. Soviet historians during the old days criticized him for inflating his numbers. Later, they criticized him for his numbers falling short.

From what I have read and studied, it did not matter. Sure, if you publicly spoke out against Stalin or questioned communism, you got the midnight visit, but everyone was a target. Each city and region had quotas of "Enemies of the People" that had to be arrested.
My prof in college described how people would huddle inside of the massive apartment complexes and hear the heavy footsteps of the NKVD in the hallway in the middle of the night, hoping that they would stop at your neighbor's door and not your own.

He spoke of Europe maintaining its heritage. The word "invasion" is obviously pretty strong. Why would he choose that word if he meant it positively? I think a lot of these "be nice to migrants" comments were in passing, and more in the general "love thy enemy" vein.

Glenn Reynolds had an article just in the last week about (memory fail) one of those strongman leaders in the former Yugoslavia where the guy went out to make a public speech, and before the speech was over, the guy was literally running for his life; the public sentiment changed that drastically as the guy was giving the speech.
That could easily happen in Sweden if they continue to suppress reports of rape by immigrants. What is the point of government if that government will throw its own population to the wolves? The whole point of government is to protect the nation from the wolves, not import them to terrorize the citizenry.
In our own way, we are doing just exactly that here in the US. If our government won't protect us, we'll take that government down, and install one that will protect us from our enemies.

What is interesting about the documentary was they had a couple americans who either moved or worked there (Including a black guy who the documentary said moved from Detroit in the 20's to "escape racism." Really.)
One of the engineering contractors interviewed in the film mentions that they had had a set of very expensive, high quality steel drill bits (I think) that were to be used in a new factory under construction. The factory was behind schedule in construction so the drill bits were left on the docks. The workers (who you have to remember were farmers all their lives until they went to become construction workers) used these bits to shore up a new concrete wall for the factory. The contractor never mentioned what happened to the workers when the bosses found out what had happened to the bits.

I finally stumbled into a youtube video that I could play. Don't know if it was the same one. But the reasoning reached the conclusion that Zebras are 'mean'; they fight back, they fight each other, and can't be domesticated. There was another youtube video where a lioness (perhaps a young one) had a zebra by the throat, but the fight ended up in water where the zebra nearly drown the lioness forcing the lioness to release the zebra which ran away. More evidence that zebras are fighters.
Now factor in this : On the DVD 'Buck' about a real life horse whisperer on which the Robert Redford movie of the same name was based, there was a problem stallion that I believe had been mistreated, or at least mis handled, and 'Buck' was really hard on the owners. That stallion was also a fighter, and would bite. It would watch for a chance when you were not paying attention and get you.
So there is evidence that even domesticated horses are 'fighters', leading me to conclude that zebras can be domesticated in the same way the Russians 'domesticated' a species of wild fox by killing the fighters, and breeding those who were submissive.
But I'm not an expert animal trainer.
Just an observer.
If someone could write a grant proposal and secure funding for a study, we could try it and see.

A sad, but slightly funny part is that he is shown later in the documentary talking about the Sputnik launch (this is after he had been living there for over 30 years.) Evidently people in his town or city taunted him by beeping at him after the satellite was launched.

Some years back, I came to the conclusion that there was no reasonable way forward to stay in California. I communicated this to the fiancee, but she's been reluctant to discuss because she had a particular job. Her company was acquired a couple of months back and she's just been given 60 days notice of her layoff.
I had done research on various states and metropolitan areas. I had done research into various opportunities. I had invited her to explore alternatives and possibilities so we could get started -- perhaps purchase an initial home to live in while we construct our final home; start making connections; start setting out roots....
And now, with all the preliminary notes on embargoed hard drives.....

Pharmaceutical companies actually have rather narrow profit margines. They also have to charge so much in the U.S. because drug approval in the U.S. is insanely expensive.
Tech companies have massive profit margines and their regulatory burden is practically zero compared to what pharmaceutical companies have to deal with.
Yet no "Occupy" idjit or even Bernie will rail again them because: 1). They are on the "correct" side of the culture wars; 2). They have so much real power over others; and 3). That's were the Dems and many Republicans get their campaign money from.

Got to meet another WWII USMC MOH pilot a few years ago. He was wheelchair-bound but .... still ogling the chicks and making um, comments. That is, he was all there.
One day at a place I volunteer a good friend of the son of Jefferson DeBlanc, another WWII USMC ace and MOH awardee, walked in and we talked with him. My old friend, himself a Guadalcanal vet who almost certainly had run across DeBlanc at the time, tried to call him but the son said his dad was no longer really coherent.
And to round out the set, one day a woman leaving the museum casually mentioned that her uncle was the "lost Black Sheep", USMC ace and Black Sheep/VMF-214 member Chris Magee, who got in hot water for flying for the Haganah in Israel in '48, and behind cold steel bars in Illinois for .... bank robbery. Woman said her dad was a Chicago cop and actually was one of those who arrested Magee (his brother) after a bank robbery. She said he had boxes of Magee's stuff somewhere, we of course asked if she could donate it, but never heard back. But talk about"living the lifestyle" you whole life, sheesh.
Related, one day a local guy comes in, asks if we take donated artifacts, I mumble the usual "depends ...", he takes out a stack of Browning black and white photos (the scalloped edges) - photos of Pappy Boyington and his dad - 214's chief mechanic. In the Pacific, at El Toro. Then he takes out a couple of the original, hand-made 214 jacket patches (one with a stain), and a silk scarf (black, with silhouettes of sheep) that Boyington had given to squadron members sometime after the war.
With a little more enthusiasm, I said "um, yeah, sure, great! We'd love to take those!". Duh.

Frantically, desperately, loudly, and fearfully.
Howdy, nighttypes. This afternoon, we drove up to see the damage done by the grassfires, and it was tremendous. Thousands of acres blackened. Many places, you could see it got really close to homes. The huge ranch that burned has a sizable herd of wild horses. At one point, they were reported desperately fleeing the flames. Don't know how they fared.
Don't know how this one got started, but a couple was just arrested for starting a grassfire back in February in the same area, and they're are looking for a couple of accomplices. Considering conditions, and the potential for people to be killed, I'd think they could at least charge them with something like attempted manslaughter? Or just hang them, that would work for me.

I do consulting in the pharmaceutical industry and used to work in big Pharma. It's incredible the amount of time and number if people required to develop a single drug. And the vast majority don't get approved. And then hulu have the foreign countries telling you how much you are allowed to charge.

The Indian elephant is domesticated, and the water buffalo but the cape buffalo is notoriously ill tempered.
The african animals are preyed upon by lions, while the Indian animals are protected by humans. Yet the african continent does have domestic cattle. (Also sheep and goats, I believe.)
It's just one of those ideas that interest me. Especially when someone says the zebra can not be domesticated because it's too wild.

Grass fires, in and of themselves, don't do much damage. The Indians used to set them deliberately to renew the land. The burned-over areas will green up sooner and better than the unburned parts. The ash from the burnt grass puts potash and phosphate back into the soil.
Problem is, people put stuff other than grass in grasslands. Like buildings.

Actually, I've got a very simple suggestion to fix the situation. Merely peruse Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution and look for "food" or "drug", then eliminate every Federal agency that shouldn't exist in the first place. Voila!!!! Drug development costs plummet; if you feel like your state doesn't adequately protect your health and safety, use some other state's [or country's] formulary; and if the prices are too damned high where you live, order your drugs from somewhere else.

When I was little, our neighbors had a couple of donkeys. They are stubborn, just for the sake of being stubborn. If you pulled on their leadrope, they would pull the opposite direction. The usual remedy for being over-a-Barrel to buy something is to stockpile it. The fiancee likes to tease me about the fact that I normally keep about 48 rolls of toilet paper and 60 bars of soap in backup storage. You can generally wait until stuff goes on sale to replenish.
And that provides a buffer against emergency. If I hear that New Orleans is paying $5 a bar for Dial gold, I can see about shipping 24 bars there for $4 apiece, then restocking my own supply when they're less than $1. That's why capitalism reacts faster and more accurately to demand than central planning.
Only if the people are somehow barred from taking advantages of localized price gouging can you have sustained pricing anomalies -- like the fact that you can't import medicines from Canada or Europe.

Yeah. That story sounds fairly level-headed. Sounds like their problem is that the amount of waste water being injected exceeds the capacity of the formation to accept it.
I would suggest that they investigate the idea of constructing large cheap solar stills to treat the wastewater, which is usually brine. Pump brine into stills, let the Sun evaporate water, condense the fresh water, and sell it to farmers for irrigation or stock watering, and inject a greatly-reduced volume of concentrated brine into existing disposal wells.
And perhaps those brines contain some useful and marketable salts, too.
Nice thing about using the Sun to drive your still, is that minute-by-minute or hour-by-hour throughput is unimportant; it's how much brine you can process in a month or a year that counts.

There were 17 fire companies fighting this one. I think they spend most of their time saving homes. It was racing off the ranches and toward town, too.
As I drove along, I was thinking about how far and long such a fire would have burned 100+ years ago.
And, yes, it will all be green soon. A smaller fire a half-mile east of our home from a month ago is already coming out green.

I don't know about this one, but as I said they just arrested a couple for starting one back in February.
Sometimes just the tossed cigarette. Or some dope thinks he can control a small trash fire. (Looks shifty-eyed at scorched area on my farm from a week ago.)

Incidentally, I vaguely recall Ira having been on table9 right (minutes) before I made one of my rare visits. We have trolls who have been known to throw links with an embedded keylogger -- people need to make sure they know who they're dealing with. My parents were health food store shoppers back in the eighties, way pre while foods or classy health food cereals. When we went to my grandma's and she had cheerios or grape nuts, i thought it was awesome because they were like, cereal you saw on tv, or at the regular grocery store.
We never got sugary cereal at home. Not ever. When i finally got to try some though? Really didn't like them. Those hard little marshmallows? Didn't like em.
Still like cheerios and grape nuts (if you let em soak long enough). Even as an adult i don't like a lot of sugar.
Maybe my parents didn't love me or maybe they actually did and made my whole life healthier by not exposing me to that stuff.
But they did let us watch the cereal tv ads. They looked so much better than they tasted when i eventually tried any.
Ok, confession off my chest, i can go on with my life now!

Yes, and at the very least, it will end the Presidential aspirations of both Rubio and Kasich ... not much of a silver lining, but silver nonetheless.
Fortunately, I think that Trump can make it to 1240. I'll take either Trump or Cruz ... but I really don't want a brokered convention.
I think that a brokered convention will end up being about who is chosen for VP, as I think at the very least, Trump will end up with at least 1150 delegates, and there would be no credible way to steal the nomination from him. Perhaps other than Cruz, no one else has any credibility ... they simply do not have the delegates. But an incredible way or two might be found, and that worries me.

A lot of stuff that seemed good as a kid is way to loaded now. Kids aren't big on subtlety. There are some thing I might enjoy today if they offered a version that was about one third of the sugar level. There were a few cases where they offered low sugar versions of cereals but included artificial sweeteners to make up the difference, which to me defeated the purpose. The flavor of the pseudo-sweeteners doesn't fool anyone. They can be useful for those trying to break a bad habit like soft drink addiction but when you just want a more subtle flavor they ruin the whole thing.

One variant was the guy who would engineer deals that would result in him getting hundreds of boxes of cereal for some minuscule sum like $50. He'd donate to local charities like homeless shelters. I'm not so sure that a brokered convention would be a RINO-fest. A lot of the delegates from states that have already voted haven't been chosen yet. They are locked in on a first vote, but nothing beyond that. If it looks like a brokered convention, the actual delegate selection could be interesting, and possibly would favor movement conservatives over either Trump supporters or RINOs.
Even if Trump gets a majority of delegates... that doesn't mean that the delegates will rubber stamp his Veep pick. Would be interesting to see the delegate reject Trump's Veep pick and choose someone like Ben Sasse...

I try to do that in a small way when buying car parts, or radio parts, or whatever. If I need one, I will buy two, if they are cheap. I bought lumber today. Figured I needed 35 2X4 studs for my immediate needs. I bought 40. At the very least, it saves me a half-hour shopping trip if I come up one short.

Yes, I do. They're usually people who were never greatly overweight to begin with and intend to keep it that way in the face of temptation. Often as a reaction to a morbidly obese parent.
I wasn't a big soda drinker but I was big on fruit juices. Things like the flavor powder packets added to a bottle of water can help break the habit by not going cold turkey. I'm still overweight because that is only one entry in the list of bad habits but it is a significant reduction in caloric intake and the risk of diabetes. Getting more exercise would help a lot and would also help with the depression that has always plagued me but as Edward Abbey said:
"As a confirmed melancholic, I can testify that the best and maybe only antidote for melancholia is action. However, like most melancholics I suffer also from sloth."

There must be. You still have to write code to tell which parts of the page to read. For that, it's probably easier to just take the source HTMl and find the main post DIV and comment DIVs and just read the text in them. You don't want to read any sidebar ads or the column stuff or other shit outside of the comments.
This should all be pretty easy (so long as Pixy doesn't change the makeup of the page or kinds of DIVs used for stuff). Could do it in a simple script - Perl, php, javascript ... anything.
Of course, you'd want controls for how it reads, select comment numbers, voices(!), etc. Youdefinitely want different commenters to have different voices and for each commenter to have his own. With sock puppets you probably want some sort of altered voice, not a fully different one - to get the real feeling that it's a sock puppet and not the person.
It's not difficult but it would be a bit of work.

Actually, the format of AoS should lend itself pretty well to existing
screen readers. There are sometimes advantages in the archaic. Assigning
distinct voices to different regulars would probably not be an off the
shelf item but there is an SDK (Software Developer's Kit) available for
Dragon Naturally Speaking to allow such to be created. The built-in
Narrator in Windows also exposes some APIs.

That's called OCR (Optical Character Recognition), advances of which first made Ray Kurzweil a big name in technology circles. He didn't originate OCR but his improvements made it a reality for far more people.
Straight text to speech should handle this site fine. You can try it right now on Windows or Mac if your system isn't too ancient. Windows has had the Narrator in the Accessibility subsection of Accessories since the late 90s.

In fact a woman becoming pregnant in the twilight years of fertility is more likely to have a child with disabilities than a child produced by any random pair of siblings.

You really have to be able to distinguish between quoted text (which is not simple the way some people quote others) and other nuances in order for the reading to really be understandable, let alone funny (in those cases). There are a lot of things that our eyes automatically skip over or make adjustments for that, if read in a straight voice as "the comment" wouldn't make any sense or would sound terribly convoluted or boring or stupid.

The readers have lots of switches and levers to adjust to taste, such as announcing quote marks, bold on/off, or other modifiers that might be missed in a straight reading. The built-in readers like Narrator on Windows are basic but the third party products are, as you'd expect, far more elaborate.

That's an unusual path. Most Libs I grew up with are now righties or right-leaning. They may not call themselves conservatives, but they're usually pretty conservative.

Well right now my writing time is pretty much taken up with helping that 81 yr old vet get his novel, 21 years in the making, in shape for an editor to either scream or get behind. But still working on my stuff also whilst my dreams keep tossing out stuff.

Well, at least you've keeping your hand in, Anna. I just can't seem to get my ass in gear at all.
I got a call from a local director asking me to fill in a role in their production of Amadeus, which I agreed to do, hoping it would shake me out of my torpor and get my juices flowing again, but now that I am doing it, I don't want to and wish I could just stay home.
I got a lovely idea for a scene in The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of, but by the time I get home from work, all I want to do is just flop down on the couch and sit until it's time to go to bed. Not good.

Yep, ESPN is the worst website ever, with every link giving you auto play videos. I liked having accuweather.com open at work and suddenly some video ad will start up, so that's out.

What BLM/Occupy/Democrats are openly wishing for here is an American Cultural Revolution, except those driven from their homes into unfamiliar territory will be rural people into cities, gun-owners made defenseless, skilled workers deprived of their livelihoods, and kulak-capitalists (otherwise known as small business people) will be impoverished and forced to live in SRO hotels.
Academics and the elites will stand by cheering (until the movement violently consumes them too), thinking finally! the right gets what it deserves!

Check out flashblock or flashcontrol (chrome), that'll nix annoying autoplay videos. Also, search on "disable auto refresh $BROWSER"
Instapundit freezes Pale Moon almost 100% of the time that I go there.
I see that in chrome on Insta's site. I think it is a stupid javascript or maybe a crappy ad. Sometimes it causes chrome to crash so I have refresh any open tabs to get the content.

This is a Firefox extension. I use Pale Moon, and it works with that as well. For me, it was Instapundit that annoyed me. I would be scrolling down the page to look for something interesting, and the page would refresh, screwing up my place on it. This extension shuts down the auto-refresh, so the page only refreshes if I actually click on the button.
