How to Talk About the New Ghostbusters Movie With Friends, Family, and Commenters

Is ExxonMobil Allowed to Talk About Climate Change?

Maybe not.

The decision about whether to investigate ExxonMobil Corporation's advocacy on climate change is now in the FBI's hands.

The Department of Justice (DOJ), which received multiple requests to probe Exxon for potential legal action, has sent the case to the FBI for its consideration, it told a pair of Democratic lawmakers.

The Other Cheating Scandal

Expert poker players often take advantage of a skill they call table feel: an ability to read the facial expressions and other unconscious "tells" exhibited by their opponents. Bridge players rely on table feel, too, but in bridge not all tells can be exploited legally by all players. If one of my opponents hesitates during the bidding or the play, I'm allowed to draw conclusions from the hesitation-but if my partner hesitates I'm not. What's more, if I seem to have taken advantage of information that I wasn't authorized to know, my opponents can summon the tournament director and seek an adjusted result for the hand we just played. Principled players do their best to ignore their partner and play at a consistent tempo, in order to avoid exchanging unauthorized information-and, if they do end up noticing something they shouldn't have noticed, they go out of their way not to exploit it. Unprincipled players consciously take advantage of such information. And, occasionally, they go a great deal further than that.

Who Turns Down a $10 Billion Dollar Offer in Cash From Amazon?

The Man Behind the Worst Video Game in History

It was July 1982 and Atari, then one of the world's most successful tech companies, had just paid a reported $21m for the video game rights to Spielberg's new blockbuster, ET the Extra-Terrestrial.

Howard Scott Warshaw was the programmer tasked with designing the game.

...Warshaw's stock was high at Atari. The 24-year-old had just finished the video game of Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark. Spielberg considered Warshaw a "certifiable genius" and 36 hours earlier Warshaw had been hand-picked for their next collaboration.

"It was a day that will live in infamy in my life forever," says Warshaw. "I was sitting in my office and I get a call from the Atari CEO. He said, 'Howard, we need the ET video game done. Can you do it?'

"And I said, 'Absolutely, yes I can!'"

Games for the Atari 2600 were distributed on cartridges that took weeks to manufacture. If ET was to be in the shops for Christmas, Warshaw had a tight deadline.

"The CEO goes, 'We need it for 1 September.' That left five weeks to do it! Normally it'd be six to eight months to do a game, not five weeks.

"Then he said, 'Design the game and on Thursday morning, be at the airport and there will be a Learjet waiting to take you to see Spielberg.'

The Rise of Politically Correct Toys

My doll is just a mirror image of me. And I am all that matters! God forbid little Ashley go for a moment without the world reflecting an image of herself right back at her, packaged with all the fuzzy feelings of cheap identity politics. All I know is that I didn't have a long blonde ponytail as a little girl, and I never wore golden hoops on my ears. But you can be sure that, unlike Edith in Lonely Doll, I will always think twice about what might befall me before I vandalize a stranger's boudoir.

Emma Watson Wants to Create a New Type of Porn

Emma Watson has called for the creation of "awesome alternatives" to pornography that empower instead of objectifying women.

...Referring to a previous conversation she and Watson had, Steinem continued: "We were both worried about the envelopment of the earth in pornographic images. Young people especially. The right wing (right wing just in a general way) on one hand is suppressing sex education and allowing, or profiteering off pornography so young people look at porno and think that's it.

71 Hey everybody.

Re the poker article: it's well-known at the tables, and also in the poker literature, that a lot (if not most) players will take *any* advantage that they can outside of outright cheating.

One advantage that's perfectly legal is "tilting" people, i.e. both playing and behaving in ways at the table so that you *deliberately* annoy and anger them, in the hope they make more mistakes.

Just about a month ago at Hawaiian Gardens Casino, I and other players at our $40 no-limit hold'em table could overhear another player at another table, literally yelling about Trump and his candidacy. I openly said, "that's a great way to tilt people: talk politics." I consider myself lucky, in over 15 years of playing I don't believe I've ever had anyone mouth about the topic at the table, and it's just not possible I was always playing with apathetic or like-minded people either.

There's tons of other ways to tilt people as well. Tony Bigcharles, the poker player/kinda-sorta online friend I've told you all about in the past... well, he's considered an expert at it, although he swears he never means to tilt anybody.

The Marines & Navy were brought in on purpose to beat the shit out of them back, and dissuade them from further preying on John q citizen. He was uber pissed off about the revisionist history in that olmos play/movie.

And in the latest news Emma Watson has released a video that she claims is pro-female feminist porn.

Said Ms Watson, "I think this is really pro-female and empowering, and well work getting naked on camera for."

Costar Lena Dunham agreed, "You can totally see every part of my body jiggle. EVERY PART!"

I saw the dumbest job title I've every heard of today:

Corporate Lead Management Specialist

What the hell is that supposed to mean and why would anyone pay someone to be in this position?

It sounds like something a D high school student would make up as a joke job title.

Posted by: Damiano at March 04, 2016 12:00 AM (XItbt)

In sales, you have "leads" -- potential sales. These, as was illustrated by Glengarry Glen Ross, are handed out to salesmen to be converted into signatures on the line that is dotted. This is done by someone at HQ. This person might do it because they've been doing it for years -- in which case they might be a "Lead Manager" -- or they could be a hired gun -- in which case they'd be a Lead Management Specialist. If the company sold to both individuals and businesses, the "Corporate Lead Management Specialist" would be the hired-gun person handing out business contacts to salesmen best able to close sales.

295 HI! HI! HI! HI!

How to Talk About the New Ghostbusters Movie...

Recently watched Ghostbusters again. Still great. Not Blues Brothers great, but great.

So, tonight, in honor of the new gals trailer, we started watching GB2. Unfortunately, we had a bad copy, and only got up to the river of slime. Re-copying, but it'll take a while. Just as well. It's late and we need to go home, not watch the inferior sequel.

Just caught a minute or two of the debate tonight, but it was Ted sounding good and getting applause no less even from the stacked audience. That's all I needed.

They put in the new Schmardt 'Lectric Meter on the office today, without telling us they were going to. By chance, we were late on a payment so they shut us off at the same time.

Which was actually fortunate, because that way we found out they installed the meter wrong, because some parts of the building are still live! Hoping the place doesn't burn up before they get back to (theoretically) fix things tomorrow.

Hoping the place doesn't burn up before then.

I think they send the "B" team to install these things.

With some extension cords and appliance shuffling, we were able to power the computers, the modem and router, and grill some burgers for dinner.

And, presuming this smidgen of usage was off-meter, the price was right. Shh.

Gonna go home, read the post, maybe check back in later. Say hi to me now anyway. Or please clap.

305 Lots of content tonight. The Ford commercial? I'm not going to watch a 16-minute commercial for anything. Sheesh. No interest in Ghostbusters, original or remake. Sorry. Or, to put it another way, not being a fan of the original means I don't have to be upset if Hollywood makes an undoubtedly crappy remake. The original might be an OK, movie, but I never saw it, which places it on a long list of OK movies I've never seen. I'm not trying to be dismissive; stuff like that just isn't in my wheelhouse.

The other cheating scandal? Interesting, and well-written story. Writer did a fine job of making the game play understandable. I used to live in a house full of bridge players and tournament directors, and some of those people named in the story are undoubtedly known to my erstwhile housemates.

The "Wish" story. Interesting. I will check that site out. Another China.corp portal site worthy of a visit is dhgate.com

The LED light fixture video? Watched about 2 minutes and shut it off. Girl is cute. Light fixture is, meh. She lost me by starting with the fancy walnut box, instead of showing what LED's to use, and how to wire them. And do you really need a microprocessor to dim LED's? And I wanted to like this, because I have a need for numerous bright overhead work lights, and was hoping this would fill the bill. You know, I wish there was an alternative means to video for imparting DIY knowledge. Like maybe a page with text and pictures on it? Videos can be very useful as an adjunct to the printed (or Web) page, but I'd like to scan the text and pictures, and then commit to watching the video only after I feel I have absorbed some knowledge from the print. Here, she started out by making the darn box. I'm sure it was a very fine walnut box, possibly even yuuge, and luxurious, but honey, I have a table saw, and know how to build a box. I want to know which LED's to buy, and what they cost, and how to wire them up. And how to do it without a dimmer, because I want 100% brightness all the time.

not innocent victims by any stretch of the story

I have some Cree bulbs. They are fine. What I need is lighting for a 32' by 60' shop with a 14-foot ceiling. I am thinking maybe I will make fixtures to accept those 4-foot LED "tubes" that work as a direct replacement for the 40-watt 4-foot fluorescent tubes. No ballast required. Nor dimmers. I will have them switched in banks, so that I need not run them all, when needing light in only one area.

I've got a Cree on a Leviton dimmer and it's not all that.

Flickers when it's below roughly 50% output. Often will extinguish itself completely when set at a low level, and stay out. Not great when it's been left on at that low level for navigating around a room later at night. Cat none too pleased about having its tail stepped on in the Stygian darkness.

One of my friends insists that it's actually pretty decent, but Atari in its rush to get it to market didn't have it playtested enough and missed a problem with hit detection that made some levels nearly unwinnable. He says there's a fan version out there that patches it, but I've never gotten around to trying it. My taste for retro doesn't tend to stretch all the way back to Atari, despite having grown up with a 7600.

425 Flickers when it's below roughly 50% output. Often will extinguish itself completely when set at a low level, and stay out. Not great when it's been left on at that low level for navigating around a room later at night. Cat none too pleased about having its tail stepped on in the Stygian darkness.

The halogen bulb which it replaced was vastly better mannered.

LED's, and here I speak of the actual diodes themselves, don't dim very much at all. They are kind of all or nothing. The "normal" way to dim them is by pulse-width modulation. Switch them on/off at a fast rate, too fast to cause visible flicker, and vary the length of the "on" time from say 10% to 100%. Much the same way as a power tool speed controller works.

Now I could see that running into trouble with an AC-powered lamp and conventional dimmer. Perhaps when "on" times become very short, you could get a beat frequency between the AC line and the lamp switching rate, resulting in some "on" periods not happening because the AC sine curve was at the zero crossing when the lamp was supposed to start. GGE can probably explain it better than me. I suppose that "dimmable" LED's have electronics in them that converts the "signal" from the wall dimmer, which is basically peak clipping, to the PWM that the diodes themselves need.

For my needs, I don't need dimmable. I was looking at using LED's to replace dash lights in a car, and for that you do need dimming. I found a nifty little circuit that uses a 555 timer chip and a power FET, with a handful of resistors and capacitors, to do the job. Maybe $5 worth of parts.

Thank you. Some sanity and a dash or rationality.

Now I'm not saying that sailors spend their liberty going to the USO and Salvation Army or Prayer meetings at the church but they're not known for seeking out trouble in large groups unprovoked.

I'm pretty certain some zooter said or did something to some sailor(s) and that drew the attention of other sailors to the area looking for 'redress'.

And they got it. Mexicans or anybody for that matter should not be given anymore benefit of the doubt than anyone else. Particularly when it involves class, women and alcohol.

I'm quite sure that it wasn't started by the sailors but it surely was going to be finished by them.

And the harbor is quite a ways from the major hangouts of the Mexicans so this was not a casual undertaking thus it had a purpose for making the trip and there's not much there for a sailors' entertainment that they couldn't get a lot closer to the base.

Someone is applying the old white = evil and brown = innocent. Which I'm sure happened occasionally but not to the extent indicated.

458 On the drive home tonight, we were listening to Mark Levin and he had a caller from W Virginia. He was a sharp fellow, but, oh! what an accent! The kind that some elitists would think he was a dumb hick.

Years ago, I started keeping my "blog heap o'links" (nic link) so when I read something I liked, I could link it, and search for it again relatively easily. A public personal bookmarks page.

Sometimes I read something and blog it.

But sometimes I read something I wish I had blogged, but I can maybe search my history and find it.

However, sometimes I read something in the newsfeed itself, not opening the page, and that doesn't get into the browser history. I think this last happened today. Or was it yesterday?

Anyway, I read somebody's blog post about someone who had a friend, from England, who moved to DC, and made friends with inside-the-beltway folks.

Then, he told them he was going to buy a house in (I think) W Virginia, and his elitist friends were saying things like, why would you move among those gap-toothed, shotgun-shooting, cousin-humping -- etc. -- people??

He was amazed, because the nobility in England didn't hold the ordinary folk in such disdain. (Which fits the description I recently read in Washington's Irving's Sketchbook. New-rich might have snobby attitudes, but not the true nobility.)

He moved, and of course found his neighbors to be salt of the earth folks.

Wish I could spirit up that post. That's the problem with subscribing to dozens and dozens of sites and reading hundreds of feed items a day... and not blogging one.

Grad School Fool @335 already sort of nailed it. The link on the zoot suit story - which is very interesting, thanks again Maet for a typically wonderful and diverse buffet of stuff - is sadly pretty much the agitprop that passes even for popular history now (i.e., all the prescribed distortions along racial/ethnic/class/etc. lines meticulously adhered to).

Older friend of mine was just back from Guadalcanal, and stationed at El Toro (USMC air base south of LA) in 1943. He says large parts of LA were off-limits for servicemen - so this was after the trouble had started.

Didn't cover all the bases, though. He said he attended a UCLA game at the Rose Bowl, at the final gun a huge crowd surged onto the field, he and his Marine buddy joined them, and soon they found themselves fighting sheriffs who were using nightsticks on them (lots of interesting tensions and flare-ups between military and local law enforcement during the war).

He and his friend spent a few days in the brig in San Pedro. Going through the chow line, a server behind the counter calls out to him - a buddy from high school - "gee, never thought I'd see your here!".

He went back to the Pacific (Marine aviation), Roi-Namur in the central Pacific, then Okinawa, where he was when the war ended (says they hit the slit trenches once the fleet started the "happy fire" at the surrender news).

Most of them are just regular people stumbling through life and beginning to realize that what they were taught in school was a bunch of bullshit. They'll figure out the rest in a few more years. Also, I would like a Cruz-Kasich ticket, but don't think that Kasich can be the hatchet. Could add a little warmth and temper Cruz' image as rigid ideologue.

Was there a line about "pull and tug" by Trump when referring to "making deals"?

Grimmy just went to a nearby community college to get a degree in welding technologies and every class was pure indoctrination. Except for the welding classes and labs which were full of Vets. But it was so bad in the classes he had to speak up, and speak he did, day after day. Especially in an Enclish composition class which my family stalled calling the "political compliance class" because it was THAT bad. Anyone with an opposing opinion to the SJW perspective would receive poor grades, and be mocked by the teacher in class. His fellow classmates thanked him for speaking up and were sure he was getting the best grade (he nearly failed but for taking extra credit essays on) but most of all they kept saying they were afraid to speak up and challenge the "common wisdom perspective." He has a few more units to take but the classes are only offered in the fall so he got a job building buses. I know why the 20-30 yo kids are fucked up, they have spent too long in reeducation camps.. We may kid about the "camps" but they are here. We pay top dollar to send our kids to them, mores the same on us.

I have to admit it was truly hilarious when some of them would get the teacher making pronouncements about stupid, psychopathic losers in the military, then having the Marine NCO sitting in the middle of the class taking notes asking him which incident he was referring to so he could speak to the issue under discussion.
Grim takes no shit. when one gurrl power type chick made the pronouncement that women could do ANYTHING men could do, he calmly told her he knew one female Marine who could pee standing up, and even pee in a bottle while driving a Humvee at 60 mph, and not get it on her uniform, but that there were some things Men could just do better through biological design. She was forced to admit she couldnt pee standing up either. She had no idea that hygienic facilities don't just follow you around, or that marines have to share space in showers to the point that they are bumping into each other, or that you dont have any say about who your roomates are, or who you have to share the shower with. Like you cant just wait if someone icky is in there and you dont want to be in there when they are. Mostly these kids are clueless. They think privacy is like a magical thing for , like EVERYONE everywhere. and they have no idea what poverty really looks like.

519 124 Caitlyn Jenner's Presidential Preference: "I Like Ted Cruz"

Caitlyn Jenner said her favorite presidential candidate is Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, and is willing to be a "trans ambassador" for the conservative politician.

NBCNews.com

And then, it just got all weird...
Posted by: Laurie David's Cervix

Actually, for reals, that interview completely transformed my opinion of Bruce Jenner, because he shows that he's more than halfway toward "getting it" -- grokking the hard-and-fast realities of contemporary political economics. Check out Jenner's choice words of wisdom, which I have highlighted:

http://www.advocate.com/caitlyn-jenner/2016/3/02/she-cait-and-i-am-not-face-face-jenner

"So who does she support for the nomination? I ask.

I like Ted Cruz,” [Jenner] declares. “I think he’s very conservative and a great constitutionalist and a very articulate man. I haven’t endorsed him or anything like that. But I also think, he’s an evangelical Christian, and probably one of the worst ones when it comes to trans issues.”

“I get it. The Democrats are better when it comes to these types of social issues. I understand that.” So why support Republicans? “Number 1, if we don’t have a country, we don’t have trans issues. We need jobs. We need a vibrant economy. I want every trans person to have a job. With $19 trillion in debt and it keeps going up, we’re spending money we don’t have. Eventually, it’s going to end. And I don’t want to see that. Socialism did not build this country. Capitalism did. Free enterprise. The people built it. And they need to be given the opportunity to build it back up.”

Jenner reveals she met Cruz prior to her transition, more than a year ago, “and he was very nice.” "

Aside from still being a bit clueless about Dems being "better" at social issues (how does "pandering", "self-contradictory" and "coercive" equate with "better"?), Jenner expresses pretty clear-headed freedom-oriented Reaganesque pro-capitalism thought, and actually comes right out and says what we here all know, that liberalism and freedom of expression are downstream from economic liberty and prosperity, which socialism destroys.

For a supposed air-headed celebu-freak, that's some mighty respectable philosophizing. Me approve.

579 It's just amazing. The party who gave us failed candidates like McCain and Romney, with their warmed-over Democrat positions, inside the Beltway connection and manners dismissive of the base, don't like the Frankenstein they created.

You may not like Trump, but he embodies the frustration of many people built up over the years. People who want something that doesn't have the stink of Washington on it, that hasn't been touched by the same people who left us at the mercy of dictators like Obama.

Now we've got the effeminate Romney who could never muster a harsh word for Obama and the Establishments new pony, Rubio, going after the leading Republican candidate like the good lap dogs they are.

I'm sick of it, and I'm sick of the dishonesty of so-called conservatives who apparently are willing to vote for the other party, or sit home In their moms basement until someone they believe is their God-King gets the nomination.

This isn't a "coalition". It's a suicide pact and I refuse to be part of it any more. A lot of people have revealed their hidden prejudices and ulterior motives and I'm tired of watching my friends family and neighbors suffer at the hands of destructive Democrats because of it.

Take a good look in the mirror, because the enemy is mostly us.

This is why I became an Independent in '08. I was sick of it then. I haven't warmed up to it since.

I still vote Republican because the Democratic agenda must be stopped, but as soon as a viable alternative exists, I will be happy to see the GOP consigned to the history books. It's not a coalition, it's not even a suicide pact, it's an abusive relationship and the party apparatus is the abuser.

Fox abandoned news and commentary a longtime ago Vic. They're just a mouthpiece for the less liberal side of the Democrat party; you know, the GOPe. You wont miss it.

629 This Caitlyn stuff is awesome. Our first VP sans schlong. We need more silliness in politics, since that is all it can contribute to better the human condition. And if Hillary did not exist I'd think that humanity would be close to utopia if no men existed. But there's Hillary, and that Muslim woman who beheaded that kid in Russia, so there goes that theory.

631 ya know, i might be a tad moar receptive to all this
"HE'S NOT CONSERVATIVE" hype about Trump if it wasn't coming from the
same mealy mouthed swine who pushed McLame, Mittens, Ryan the Liar
Hearted, CashAndCarry, et al....

yea, you can go attempt aerial intercourse with a rotating pastry.

I pushed none of those people. Instead I worked to kick Eric Cantor to the curb and elect Dave Brat.

I am telling you that Cruz is a principled conservative who has my support and would love yours too.

I am also telling you that Donald Trump is a progressive con-man.

633 I've no hope Trump would do anything that woul benefit the US, but if he would give Mitch McConnell a wedgie and hold his head into an unflushed toilet for 5 minutes, I'd vote for him. And he's the one most likely to do it.

634 That Ghostbusters article is sticking in my craw.

First, Ghostbusters was a sui generis comedy that was a product of its era. I'm highly skeptical that it'll work again in a different time with different actors (or actresses). Even if you could set aside all the feminist claptrap that's tied up with the movie, I'd still be skeptical. This is a larger problem with Hollywood unrelated to the leftist project of converting every form of entertainment into a social justice rant. Hollywood generates a lot derivative content that stinks. This seems like it could fall into that category.

Second, the movie is already political. If it's funny, maybe I'll like it. But, NOBODY HAS SEEN IT YET, and the main topic of discussion isn't about how good the movie WILL BE, but that is IMPORTANT because an all female cast has replaced an all male cast and the studio is pushing an all female cast as its big summer comedy.

Look, I'm hostile to that project because I am a male. Naked female boosterism is adverse to my own interests, and also violates my view that people (and art) should be judged on the merits.

This hostility, which I might be able to restrain in the face of a genuinely funny movie, is only increased (dramatically) when feminists preemptively instruct me (in a schoolmarm tone) how to talk about the matter. And, it's here that their project becomes clear: They're not even trying to win over men (like me). I think most reasonable men of my age (mid-30s) will come at this with point one in mind, skeptical but persuadable. Then you read something like the Verge article. No reasonable person could believe this type of scold--telling a sovereign, skeptical group that their views are not to be spoken--could possibly persuade those people. Right? Because in reality, this kind of article only creates a freight train of negative associations with the film.

No, the point here is to cow and silence. Which I know isn't a new thought, but there it is.

635 Re: Emma Watson and a new type of porn:

I didn't follow the link because I don't give a crap, but it did inspire a brief tickling of wonder: If you are doing the nasty AND you have a sound command of magic, how awesome would sex be? And a Hogwartsian setting for such.

You're welcome, have fun with this tonight as you fap.

636 #634 "...Naked female boosterism"

I read that as "booberism."
