California gas prices expected to jump overnight, possibly 30 cents by weekend Prices often climb in California this time of year because refineries switch from the winter blend of fuel to the more expensive state-mandated summer blend, which evaporates less quickly during warm weather.

But this year's switch to summer gasoline has triggered a jump of 52 cents a gallon on the gasoline wholesale market in Los Angeles this week, which will lead to the higher pump prices.

About the NYC teacher story, my folks (bless their memories) saw the writing on the wall when the Black Panther/Marxist coalition wrested control of the UFT from Albert Shanker in the late 60's.

They kept their heads down for nearly 30 years and got the hell out, as did my brother about 5 years ago now.

And if you think, fuck NYC they deserve it, look at your own school districts in the more rural parts of the country and prepare yourselves.

Three simple questions for Daren Jonescu who asks Trump supporters three simple questions

1) Why do you presume that people who do not attack Trump are naive 11 year old boys who are easily fooled?

2)Who are these 'key players in the establishment'?
there are thousands of politicians all clammering for face time in front of the TV. Which ones are the key players that Trump should be criticising, and how do you expect Trump to criticise them all?

3)Have you been screened for mental illness like paranoia? Believing that everyone is out to get you, that there is a grand conspiracy is generally a clue.

Who does have a shot then? Looking at it now, only Trump does by that measure. Should everyone else just get out of the race right now and let him have it?

If you believe in your own candidacy, you believe you can win. Maybe he can have a great debate performance and damage Trump (this is what ace reported happened last night. I didn't watch, I don't know.) But you have to think Rubio - and Cruz - were both hoping for that outcome.

If this continues I may have to just DC the daily news links. My guess

fact, my guess is at least 25% of the audience here don't read any

I think your speaking to psychology and not necessarily reality on the ground. Rubio is hoping no one gets the magic 270 and that the conventioneers steal it for him, regardless of which candidate has the most delegates at the time.

That is his strategy. I've heard his advisers admit it.

Aw, hell, LDC. This has been going on for at least 20 years that I know of. I was in CA in the mid '90s the first time this happened (the switch to the "state mandated" summer blend of gas). When I arrived (on a business trip), got a rental car and gassed up, price was about 97 cents a gallon. (Like I said, this was 20 years ago.)

Week later, it's time to (thank God) go home, and I gas up again. The price had jumped to over $1.50 a gallon. Now, having been there, I had heard in the local media that this was coming and why. Yet by the time I got home the ripples of fear and outrage were spreading all over the country. "Oh, we are running out of oil. Look at the price jump in California", etc, etc. BJ Clinton even went so far as to release some oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to ameliorate the "problem". (Turns out Clinton gave it all to some well-heeled political crony of his in Harlem, who promptly sold it all on the spot market, laughing all the way to the bank.).

It was all just another example of how we no longer have (if we ever did) a genuine news media. Never once was that state mandate being the cause of the big price jump for gasoline in California ever mentioned. A classic "manufactured crisis" for the plebs, nothing more...

142 But wait, there's more: Evelyn Waugh wasn't just a man, he was a gay man, one (one might say) of the gayest, and close to 40 years ago when such things first became more relevant that anything else, he was put forth as one of the Great Gay Heroes. And now they don't know what gay he even was?

For the Kulcherl Left not to even know his "gender identification" shows, well, something, I don't even know what the hell ever it shows. But it ain't good.

His given first name was Arthur. Evelyn was one of several middle names, like all upper crust toffs. There's a Sinjin (St. John) in there too, should he have needed to chum up with Kim Philby's father, who even Lawrence of You-Know-Where said was a most immoral man, in Mr Kipling's phrase. So had Waugh wanted to avoid all the gender confusion in his gadabout travels he certainly easily could have done. He kind of liked it, like he kind of liked a lot of things NTTAWWT.

Next week, Somerset Mom.

146 For once the after debate remarks were worth hearing,

both Trump and Cruz were the interviews I watched.

Very informative if they're available on line.

Short version:

Trump: Always be selling.(watch how he shores up the Evangelical vote)

Cruz: Relaxed, dominates stupid interviewer, comes off more likable because starts talking about kitchen table items( though broadly)

The way I see last night, election-wise-

1) Trump still won

-mostly because he still looked like a leader despite the double teaming.

He just wasn't flustered.

And yes, he sang the same song. But at the end of the day, he was still alpha male unflappable and he's talking about kitchen table discussion items.

2) Cruz - who is my guy.

Won the debate intellectually. He too looked like an alpha male when engaged in debating Trump.

Had the most substantial points.

But, if there's another debate- he'd better start hitting on kitchen table items hard.

Also, he fell for the Blitzer trick of "yeah, yeah, you'll get your turn to talk about that after we ask Joe Blow this totally unrelated question twice, I think, before he pushed back-

not alpha-ish, my friend.

3) Mario- who like always looked nervous and jumpy

had the best one-liners of the night against Trump.

The GOPe, I sure, hired some writers to give him some good lines.

Though Mario did repeat a good line over and over, it came off less robotic.

So, he'll probably rise in the polls. The one-line hit is a proven winner in debates.

He still looks and acts like a beta- he'd be a good 2nd or 3rd in command, but not number one.

And there's that little problem that every word out of his mouth is a lie.

4) Kasich- who let the subway lunatic into the debates?

On the plus side- the Postman's Boy traded in his Bedlam lunatic haircut-

-for a greased up Sonic the Hedgehog look spiking off the sides and back of his head.

5) Carson - Oh, good! They brought sedatives for the subway crazy person -

only they gave them to the wrong guy on the opposite side of the stage.

YMMV

.Theft of Taxpayer money is the new Liberal thing. Every week the Lexington KY newspaper does some editorial about all of the tax breaks the State gives to Companies and how that is letting them "steal" money that rightfully belongs to the taxpayers.

Of course they just started doing this because we have a Republican Governor now, they didn't touch it for the last 25+ years because everything was run by Democrats.

151 Can a Moron put some knowledge to me concerning the actual production and refinement cost difference between the three? "

Sure. How much time you got?

The real tale of retail gas prices is one of collusion between refiners and our friends in DC.

You see, there are incredibly strict rules on refiners (the current line is that it's easier to get a new nuke plant approved than a refinery). Existing refiners like it, though, as it keeps newcomers or competitors from rocking the proverbial boat.

Actual effort for the different octane levels? I today's market I'd guess about a few cents/gal. That's why several sellers dump an additional additive pack into higher octanes - to "justify" the price.

I think the GOPe finally realizes this, since Grassley refused to even meet with Obama to talk about a nomination.

Dr. Krauthammer went off on the Senate GOP the other night, saying "even talking to the Democrats should be off the table, because even starting to talk means it's all over and Obama wins".

That's not a direct quote, because its from memory, but its is really close. He was emphatic, and he got even more emphatic when responding to the panel lefty predictably (and contemptibly) claiming "won't the country expect the GOP to at least talk?".

264 Yes, it sure looks like somebody has "had a few protein bars for breakfast."
If that's what they're calling it now.

Almost all breakfast cereals were instituted by kooks, like Kellogg and Graham. And since then, diet kooks of other stripes have knocked them for their kookiness, for over a century now. They probably weren't a good idea, except in comparison to other things that were taken as breakfast. Exception, I think, for shredded wheat, which was prescribed for "chronic dyspepsia," quite a problem at one time. My junior high gym teacher, one of the more intellectual teachers in that school actually, likened it to eating straw.

Certainly for the active modern lifestyle everyone likes to posture as having, the traditional English breakfast would be best. Eggs, meat, fish, all with nuaghty nicknames, and then get to hunting and riding. Which nobody does. Ford Madox Ford said that the English upper class died out (this was before WWI) by keeping its outdoor diet after it had gone to an indoor way of life. A century ago.

Trump even said, "that being said, I'm very pro Israel".

"I was the grand marshall down Fifth Avenue a number of years ago for the Israeli Day Parade, I have very close ties to Israel. "But we have go in to save these lives; these people are being slaughtered like animals, he said. It's horrible what's going on; it has to be stopped. We should do on a humanitarian basis, immediately go into Libya, knock this guy out very quickly, very surgically, very effectively, and save the lives.

Then, After it's all done, Trump said, the protesters who took over the country would reimburse the U.S. through oil." Buzzfeed

iirc, many were saying we should have gone in early to prevent the chaos, and to prevent the loss of the armories to (potential) terrorists. We waited so long it became a lot messier. I don't even remember if the idea was to go in early and take out Ghadaffi, or what.

306 From the New York handbasket story:

"These are young people who came to the U.S. as children," state Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia said in a statement, "They are American in every way but

... being American.

They've done everything right.

Except being in the right country ... their country.

They've worked hard in school, some have even served in the military,

Lie. Illegals are not allowed to serve. Green card holders can serve but illegals have NEVER been allowed ... until just recently when Barky and his junta and the Vichy GOP all decided to make a total mockery of all law and nationhood - but that was too recently for New York to be making such lying, false claims.

but when it's time to apply for a license, they're told 'Stop. That's far enough.' We shouldn't close the door on their dreams."

We should give them tickets and forcibly escort them onto the airplane, bus, train, boat, or footpath that will take them away back to the countries they are actually citizens of.

And these New York legislators ought to be deported with the illegal invaders they are so keen on giving aid and comfort to.

If there had been 4 or 8 years of kerry I think that penduleum would have swung back to the right.

part of the reason we are seeing such violence from the left now is because, like Ben mentions in his speech, there are now ways to fight them because of the internet, and alternative voices, which (he talks about Cronkite, I think) we have never had before - opposing views

he's right about that

that is one reason the left's violence is upticking. One, we can see the violence that existed before, and Two, we have opposing voices showing them for who they are.

331 296 Trump DID say back in 2011 that we should go in to Libya for humanitarian reasons, and get Ghadaffi out. Cruz said that and Trump denied taking a position.

340 Part of the reason millennials are also so overwhelming in favor of socialist policies is because of the economy that grew so rapidly and enormously benefited their parents is hardly helping them at all.

They are really hurting economically, seeing little benefit from either establishment republican or democratic policies. I'm no saying their socialist views are correct, but I understand why they are reacting so badly. The social contract for the younger generations no longer works and will require some deep thinking on how to revitalize the economy going forward. My two cents. No one "won" the debate last night.

As much as people said Rubio "came out swinging" ...

He still seemed weak and now petulant. He tried humor to mock Trump. I don't think it worked. Maybe a tiny, tiny bit, but not overall.

Cruz was who he is.

Trump was 50/50 as usual. Teetering on the fence of BS and others taking his words/acts out of context.

I give up. I'll vote Cruz, and sit back and watch.

So Shapiro is a Cruz supporter, like Thomas Sowell. I'm glad to be in their company.

375 296 Trump DID say back in 2011 that we should go in to Libya for humanitarian reasons, and get Ghadaffi out. Cruz said that and Trump denied taking a position.

________________________

LOL. Yes, that's exactly what Samatha Power and Hillary Clinton were telling Obama (except they were probably saying that the "moderate" Libyan muzzies would love us and be grateful to us and would not want to kill us anymore, instead of saying they'd pay us back with their oil).

Didn't quite work out either way, though. Our Air Force took out Quadaffi surgically, as planned, but then the power vacuum we created in Libya was quickly filled by actors who were even more bloodthirsty than Muammar; actors like AQ and ISIS, who quickly set about slaughtering all the "moderates" so beloved by the U.S. And now Libya -- and all its oil and other resources -- are under the control of these vicious terrorists, and the country, and its people, are worse off than they were before the U.S. intervened to "help" them.

BTW, Obama gave an interview a couple of years ago on t.v. (CBS, I think), in which he was asked about Libya and he admitted that he "never really gave much thought to what would happen" in Libya after Quadaffi was killed. The MSM basically ignored Obama's shocking admission, but can you imagine the sustained outrage from the left we'd have been subjected to if a Republican president had ever publicly admitted to such colossal stupidity and incompetence?

When we were kids we only got those on camping trips, if it rained and we didn't want to cook eggs and bacon or whatever outside.

We'd keep some milk in the cooler from the camp store, which was the coolest store ever because it was also a boat gas station, at the end of a loooong dock, and we went there by boat.

380 Most of you probably aren't of the millenial generation; and if we can go beyond their delusions which are the result of a brainwashing educational system, they are feeling very bitter economic pain. They look at the job market, their prospects in it--the requirements for entry level positions today are way beyond what existed even twenty years ago--and say, what's in it for me?

Of course you'd be drawn to a guy like Bernie who is telling you the system has been setup against you and he can tear it down and benefit you.

So far, the Republicans have offered nothing new in return. Just the same old, same old. Rubio thinks rhetoric makes him Reagan. It doesn't. Reagan offered a message that truly spoke to the young (a lot of whom voted for him) about how Republican policies would make them better off. Today, the party is much more beholdened to its doner class.

Trump is a bit like the comic book character Deadpool.

In that he can see, the reality of both sides and can participate in both.

He knows business and he knows as he said last night politicians and politics.

He can play in the political ground because he understands at the end of the day-

it is all about sales and selling.

And he does both of those very well.

And he negotiates with everyone at the table being a hardass because it's about bottom-line money.

That's why he romps over them, even when he says questionable stuff.

He can play in their world while they could never play in his. Or, at best, have yet to play in Trump's world.

Watch his right-after the debate interview.

Always selling. Simple direct points. His signaling to the Evangelicals that he's their guy.

That is tough to beat- unless perhaps Cruz could get him one on one.

Trump's secret weapon (still secret after all these months) is drawing non-voters to the polls.

There's no data set for these people. That's why this race is so confusing. The rest of the electorate is calcified, which is what permits the swing voter targeting to affect elections so profoundly: make all the noise you want about staying home or voting D, but red voters vote red and blue voters vote blue.

There are massive numbers of previous non-voters coming to the polls in these primaries, and they're all there for one reason.

Maybe the Horde can help me here. When I first came to the US, ate at a New England seafood restaurant and one of the desserts was a grape nut custard pudding. I never got the recipe, anyone know of this delicious dessert? Grape nuts on the bottom and custard on the top.

Hells yes. Us Italicans use them in pesto sauce.

I believe it's only western pines that produce the edible nuts. Our pines here in NY (mostly Eastern White Pines) don't.

When I primitive camped in the high desert, we roasted Pinyon Pine cones in the coals at the edge of the campfire. After 20 minutes or so, you just shake the roasted nuts out into a bowl and chow down.

Tons of calories and fats, so they make a great snack when backpacking, hiking and so forth. And they taste great.

thx ... details are slowly coming back to my brain. I'm not sure if we were agitating, and thought the good freedom fighters would win. But by the time we went in the bad "freedom fighters" were dominant.

The problem was we didn't really know just who we were dealing with as they all seem to flip around. Arab Spring was all good in Obama's mind ... he likes chaos I guess, easier than building real coalitions.

I can't put Trump's comment in context of stopping the slaughter. It seems that was after we already agitated for the freedom fighters to fight, so by that point our alliance (or whatever it was then) was already out the window.

That would make Trump right ... go in and finish it quickly. (and make Cruz wrong, that Trump was advocating for removing Ghadaffi while he was still our "friend") Ghadaffi had the tents in New York or DC not long before that iirc. heh

And the Trump supporters, like Perot supporters, will proudly beat their drums as they march backward. Until their dying day (just like Perot supporters) they will maintain that they 'did the right thing'.

No matter that the 'right thing' had disastrous results for the Republic and it's people. No, no... the self-engaged ego boost of having 'stuck it to the GOPe' is worth it.

I had these precise conversations with Perot parrots back in the day. They could not get it through their self-engaged heads that the election had not a damn thing to do with 'voting their conscience' or 'protesting the status quo' or similar rationalized BS, it had ONLY to do with WHO was going to be President.

So, we got Clinton. Damage was done from which we have never recovered, and probably never will.

And here we are, about to have it happen again. It's a freaking nightmare, except that it is real. I perceive no distinction between the psychology of Trump supporters, and the psychology of Bernie supporters. The Dems have got to be laughing their asses off.

Sadly, America will pay the price.

Yup.

In my case it was: fly to Denver. Rent a car and drive 6 hours to Utah. Drive to trailhead. Hike 9 miles into the desert. Establish camp. Build campfire. Find pinyon pines. Discover that pinyon cones are usually high up and hard to pull off. Get survival knife. Hike around to find enough low cones to cut off. Cut some off.

No sweat.

Trump's campaign is an outsider actually gaining traction. Hell, so is Bernie's. It's an enormous relief to me to see that it's actually possible. After years of Obama I'd honestly just about given up.

Of course, Obama might be trying to work a deal under which he gets his appointment only if Hilldog wins. At that point, the Senate would have no reason to wait and might get leverage because Obama is just petty enough to want to take that away from Hillary.

That is the reaction from every Republican I know - utter loathing and disgust. Some of it is ridiculous - comparisons of Trump to Hitler and so on - but the disgust he inspires is every bit as strong as the devotion.

The exception is my cousin, who voted in the Nevada caucus. And she is nuts.

His entire campaign is a promise to use America's status and wealth (what's left of it...which is still #1 in the world) as leverage to get what's good for us instead of treating it like a shameful privilege to be absolved through penance.

That IS reform. That's an attack on liberalism on a fundamental, philosophical level.

He doesn't need us, man. He doesn't care about in-the-weeds conservative thinkers because there are way more Rob Gronkowskis in this country and he wants votes. He is making a pitch for American capitalism directly to the people, in a way they can understand.

And guess what? We've failed this country. Obama won. Not for lack of trying, but we have. And that's most evident in the Let It Burn meme we've all embraced since we couldn't do it our way.

He might be doing the Right Thing in the Wrong Way, but that's better than us, who've kept trying to do the Wrong Thing (fight liberalism on its turf and getting lost in rhetorical battles instead of working in the real world) the Right Way.

I think you're giving him too much credit. I don't think The Donald gave a wet fart about politics or international relations before a few months ago save for how it would affect his bottom line.

One thing Rubio was absolutely correct on last night is that Trump never really says anything. He just talks about polls and winning and making things great .. and he does it over and over and over and over.

Even the few things he does get "specific" on like the wall he is still all over the map. Yeah, he's going to build a yuggge wall and kick all the illegals out. This. Trump is an executive, not an ideologue. People are tired of the conservative nerds that over-promise with their gamed out Dungeons and Dragons policy fantasies. They are completely removed from reality. Cruz harps about some detailed policy plan... what? how? Been there, done that, thousands of elections, it never works. The Dems will show them with a clip of the Donald saying he's pro-life.

It won't bother his followers because none of his blatant hypocrisies do. Everyone else? Well, that's a different matter.

Hard to argue with that, I would add that there is more than just the faith in the leader required, there should also be faith in the "government" (read that as back-stabbing Democrats and RINO squishes) to prosecute and support a war in the long term. well he has made some commitments. On immigration last night he said when some are kicked out others will get the message and go on their own. He also supports e-verify. The wall would be about half the border he said... 1000 miles. He has a lot of details.

People act like he is clueless, but this appearance before a congressional hearing has them fawning over his every word of tax policy, and thanking him for understanding trade issues, even as they get into "the weeds". He knows how to win elections, separately he knows intricate details and policy off the top of his head. Obviously being a wonk doesn't always work so well in running for president.

I share your concern on what he will really do ... but Trump is the lower risk option by far, imo.

This is almost an hour, but any part is good ... I listened to the whole thing ... he is a smart guy, understood then the stock market "bubble" even before Greenspan made his "irrational exuberance" comment. He also comments briefly on the trade issues, one rep thanking him for understanding our export of jobs ... 1991.

He testifies right after Bill Seidman. If people would watch they would maybe quit calling him a buffoon. (or not)

I wish Cruz would sit down with me face to face for about 30 minutes.

I could absolutely give him the talking points and the phrasing-

that would increase his share of the vote considerably.

A big part of my job is selling stuff to people that they don't want but they need.

Some folks, intelligent - STEM, or higher business types are relatively easy-

I can just show them the facts and figures as it were-

This is where Cruz is anyone who's a conservative- philosophically- has already been sold.

Where he's stuck is at the making an emotional/personal/life connection with all the other voters-

to get them to buy what they do not necessarily want

but what they need.

That is the help he needs and is not getting it from the bozos he's hired to advise him.

TL/DR, I know.

I will never stay home because the other races are too important, but it would be interesting to see how a write-in for Pres (which in the general is more a beauty contest than anything else) would work.

I should clarify, I will vote local election, but will not pull the lever for Trump, I think a write in would be nice.

651 All Trump can do is get in office,
-----------

Well, you see, that's like saying, 'All Perot has to do is get in office'.

There is not a scintilla of evidence that Trump has a chance. Aside from cult-of-personality 'Followers', he has no support from anyone.

Look, I know that there are people here who support the image that THEY have in their head regarding Trump, and it is not my intent to insult them. My intent is to point out that:

A. The guy does not have chance of being elected.

B. The rational alternatives are being damaged/destroyed by the guy.

C. His candidacy assures a Hillary triumph.

See, I'm actually concerned about WHO is going to be President for at least the next four years. You know, SCOTUS and all that.

Oddly, if Trump manifested the SLIGHTEST indication that he was a Constitutional Conservative, I might feel at least a twinge of enthusiasm, but he never has, because he isn't. He is a blusterous blowhard, and people mistake blusterous blowhards for people of substance.

In this case, the stakes are very, very real and very, very dangerous.

Oh I see many of the so-called "conservatives" are going to take their
ball and go home if Trump is the nominee. Some are even saying they will
vote for The Hag instead.

Oh yes, this is after spending the
last week insulting voters over their education. By the way, the same
voters who have not shown up in several elections and have a better
demographic mix than at least the last three general elections.

But you go girl. Because, you know "it's principled".

What a bunch of buffoonish, partisan idiots.

No conservative would vote for Hillary... the establishment people I know are threatening to (I remind them of her very criminal an d shady history and hope it penetrates.

As far as conservatives not voting for Trump... I won't. I have never voted progressive in my life and I don't intend to start now. To me, likely policy matters and character matters even more (here is where Trump lost any hope of my vote when he started blatantly lying about Cruz). Its not a matter of me "taking my ball and going home" if Cruz the guy doesn't win. It's a matter of Cruz the conservative is the only one left in the race who supports my ideals.

As much as you and other Trump supporters refuse to hear it, "burn it all down" is not a way forward. I am all for destroying the Washington uniparty but there has to be consideration of the "and then what". Judging from his entire almost 70 year life before he decided to run for office as a Republican, the "and then what" under Trump (if he even goes in as a destroyer which I think is doubtful) would be very short on respect for my inalienable rights and very long on crony deals and progressive policies.

For instance, whatever Trump says about repealing Obamacare, he is fully supportive of the worst parts of it that abrogate our rights as supposedly free citizens.

No one here has insulted anyone over their education level (at least none of the regular posters have) and no one will. For that matter neither has Cruz ever done that. He has repeatedly spoken in favor of greater emphasis on trades for people instead of useless degrees in philosophy. But your guy, while not being openly contemptuous like the establishment, is pretty damn condescending to "the uneducated"... thank God for small favors, at least he didn't refer to them as "the poors".

653 Trump is winning because he is not supposed to be there.

He is not on the list.

Too bad.

Fuck the list.

Well, then enjoy the next betrayal from the GOP.

656 Ben Shapiro faced up to the brown shirts, and I suspect that'll become more common as this election proceeds. The leftists are feeling stronger than they have been in 80 years, those fucks.

I saw a Trump supporter on twitter last night refer to Shapiro as "foreskinless benny s".

I know the twitter skinheads are a tiny minority of Trump supporters, but they make my skin crawl.

657 Probably a dead thread, but just so you know...my neighbor's son has a Trump sticker on his car. he's working a factory job, since graduating from high school last year. This is WA state, so not exactly red.

Your physicians don't support Trump because they are in that protected class Noonan talks about. Most of us out here in blue land are smart enough not to advertise who we are going to vote for. We don't like having our car keyed. Bumper stickers mean nothing. And there are a whole lot of folks that will vote Trump because they are sick and tired of their "betters" telling them who they should support.

658 Rev. Al Sharpton told attendees at a Center for American Progress Action
Fund event Thursday he would flee the country if Donald Trump won the
election, in order to avoid being deported by Trump.
BS...

They never really do, see Alec Baldwin, Babs Striesand.
But this goes into the column...reasons to vote Trump.
