When it was announced - during the Watts riots of August 1965 - that the rioters were about to move to Desilu's production base of Culver City, California, the original phaser rifle from "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was one weapon that Herbert F. Solow suggested to Gene Roddenberry as a means of protection. (Inside Star Trek: The Real Story, p. 89) Apart from its use in the episode and its proposed anti-riot use, the phaser rifle prop was most notably re-utilized for well known official publicity shots, which featured William Shatner, in the guise of Kirk, holding the phaser rifle. (Inside Star Trek: The Real Story, pp. 117, 106, 190; et al.)
[This result came up while I was searching for something completely different and led me down a rabbit hole of links. I blame society. And Google.]
Apparently Roddenberry never used the prop rifle to scare off rioters but he did call on former buddies in the LAPD to stand guard with rifles and pistols and protect the actors during filming of Police Story (not the Joseph Wambaugh series of the 70s). Interestingly Roddenberry based the character Spock on LAPD Police Chief William Parker who he deeply admired.
Coldly cerebral (Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, a one-time L.A.P.D. officer and Parker speechwriter, reportedly based the character Mr. Spock on his old boss), intolerant of fools, and famously incorruptible (in a department that was famously corrupt), Parker gradually rose. In 1950, a scandal involving 114 Hollywood "pleasure girls" made Parker Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, a position he would hold for sixteen controversial years. In time, he became, in the words of Los Angeles Times publisher Norman Chandler, "the most powerful man in Los Angeles."
Parker supposedly was also the inspiration for the character Sgt. Joe Friday on Dragnet. (Did you know that Jack Webb was supposed to be the original Dean Wormer in Animal House?)

I'm going to editorialize a bit here and point out that whenever #GamerGate was brought up over the past year and a half, a certain number of the commenters here just shrugged their shoulders and declared that they didn't give a shit about gaming so why should they care. Well this is why you should care.
It was never about gaming - the gamers were just the first, easy targets - it was always about control and suppressing whatever the SJWs don't like. Now maybe you don't give a shit about Twitter either but eventually the SJWs will come for something you do care about. It'd be nice if you were in the fight and helping out those battling them today - unless you'd like to find out whether or not the Niemöller quote applies to you the hard way.

This. Thank you. The dismissive tone that those commenters took just highlighted how little people understand the extent of the problems we face.
Though it was nice to see that the gamers didn't turn out to be the easy targets the SJWs thought they were.
Even though I've never used Twitter, or planned to, I'm not sure what I could do to pushback.
The reason for the success of the SJWs speaks to the extent of the Gramscian damage we've suffered. they're even infesting the upper corporate structures in various industries.

Video games represents one of the few parts of the culture they don't have complete control over, and they can't tolerate not controlling it. The issue with gamergate started with revelations that a female video game developer was sleeping with video game journalists in exchange for positive reviews. It started as a simple industry/media corruption story.
The gaming media, unwilling to be called out on their corruption, started playing victim cards left and right, calling gamers (their own target demographic) misogynistic.
Gamers responded gloriously, thoroughly vetting the gaming media and discovering what a wretched hive of scum and villainy it was. All of the usual Lefties tried to back the corrupt gaming media and got a thorough bruising, and they weren't happy about it. Hence the controversy.

Way more importantly for youth crime, that is when home video game systems dropped in price and became readily available. Kids stayed home to blow shit up on their TV's instead of going out d getting into trouble.
For adults, the late 80's to mid 90's is when states got tired of revolving door criminals and instituted three strike and truth in sentencing laws. Crime rates likely dropped because criminals were locked up for much longer periods and so weren't available to commit further crimes.

Isn't one of the big problems of that claim is that it doesn't account for drops in crimes in states where abortion was legal before Roe vs. Wade? Meaning that a state where abortion was legal before would have the drop happen earlier. I'm betting that is not even close to the case.

I used to be a Floridian, and cheered when Rubio rose to take on Charlie Crist, who was a typical Democrat with an R by his name (who later defected after his loss). 1st amendment -- Trump is A-OK with people's religious liberties being stomped on by gay marriage activists,
2nd amendment -- what Trump is saying now on the 2nd amendment is very different than his past support of an "assault weapons' ban,
5th amendment -- see his eminent domain abuse and continued defense thereof,
amnesty -- Trump has held every position from let them all stay to make them all leave but then let some or all of them back in,
Obamacare -- has repeatedly called Cruz a liar for pointing out that his past support of single payer insurance likely means he will not actually get rid of the substance of Obamacare while he simultaneously states that the individual mandate is a good thing and that he will make sure the government provides insurance for everyone.
If this country is going to elect another progressive, it might as well go full retard and elect Hillary.

Yep. And one of the really interesting parts about it was the unifying effect on actual gamers who railed against it. I get what you are saying about a leftist style union led trade war. But there is a lot of room for improvement between where we are now and that point.
fwiw I have been on the Cruz train since I watched two videos of him. One of him talking to that farmer about ethanol. But first and more importantly was one where he questioned the sierra club president. It was a thing of beauty. Never have I seen an elected republican actually do that.

i had one like that. Aphrodyte, she was also a noble soul. Spent the night with the new dog on the floor curled against him, to let him know this place was gonna be waaaaay better than the office at the local pound where i got him. He always worshiped her after that, which is uncommon in a Blue heeler. I will see if i can send one in for the pet thread of her and the Naked One. They were best friends and slept with me in my arms every night. the only times they were not sleeping ON me, they were snuggled by the bed with my dog Wally. Now all residing in the Land Of Happy Memory. Breaks my heart, because there are moments i forget they are not still here, then i see the little orange faces of the current cats (and the current white kitten what places fetch, and his Dilute tortie adopted sister what also plays fetch) and its amazing to me that life does in fact go on. Gayle or her husband & daughter ask for prayers for God to take her soon & peacefully. Doctors said 1-2 weeks Monday.
Please pray for Gayle & her family that she dies soon & without pain.
