Overnight Open Thread (2-23-2016)

Quote of the Day

When it was announced - during the Watts riots of August 1965 - that the rioters were about to move to Desilu's production base of Culver City, California, the original phaser rifle from "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was one weapon that Herbert F. Solow suggested to Gene Roddenberry as a means of protection. (Inside Star Trek: The Real Story, p. 89) Apart from its use in the episode and its proposed anti-riot use, the phaser rifle prop was most notably re-utilized for well known official publicity shots, which featured William Shatner, in the guise of Kirk, holding the phaser rifle. (Inside Star Trek: The Real Story, pp. 117, 106, 190; et al.)

[This result came up while I was searching for something completely different and led me down a rabbit hole of links. I blame society. And Google.]

Apparently Roddenberry never used the prop rifle to scare off rioters but he did call on former buddies in the LAPD to stand guard with rifles and pistols and protect the actors during filming of Police Story (not the Joseph Wambaugh series of the 70s). Interestingly Roddenberry based the character Spock on LAPD Police Chief William Parker who he deeply admired.

Coldly cerebral (Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, a one-time L.A.P.D. officer and Parker speechwriter, reportedly based the character Mr. Spock on his old boss), intolerant of fools, and famously incorruptible (in a department that was famously corrupt), Parker gradually rose. In 1950, a scandal involving 114 Hollywood "pleasure girls" made Parker Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, a position he would hold for sixteen controversial years. In time, he became, in the words of Los Angeles Times publisher Norman Chandler, "the most powerful man in Los Angeles."

Parker supposedly was also the inspiration for the character Sgt. Joe Friday on Dragnet. (Did you know that Jack Webb was supposed to be the original Dean Wormer in Animal House?)

Semi-Related: The New Centurions by Joseph Wambaugh, who was also an LAPD officer during the same era Roddenberry was, is still considered one of the best books ever written on what's like to be a policeman.

Anita Sarkeesian: There is not a shred of truth about me being involved in "shadowbanning" and driving my critics off Twitter, and if you disagree that is a manifestation of your misogyny and you deserve what you get!

I'm going to editorialize a bit here and point out that whenever #GamerGate was brought up over the past year and a half, a certain number of the commenters here just shrugged their shoulders and declared that they didn't give a shit about gaming so why should they care. Well this is why you should care.

It was never about gaming - the gamers were just the first, easy targets - it was always about control and suppressing whatever the SJWs don't like. Now maybe you don't give a shit about Twitter either but eventually the SJWs will come for something you do care about. It'd be nice if you were in the fight and helping out those battling them today - unless you'd like to find out whether or not the Niemöller quote applies to you the hard way.

Will Twitter Narrow the Overton Window?

Social media was supposed to democratize the flow of information. In a provocative Twitter essay on the ways that outlets like Twitter and Facebook weaken old-fashioned political establishments, Clay Shirky wrote: "Social media is breaking the political 'Overton Window' - the ability of elites to determine the outside edges of acceptable conversation." In other words, now that the barriers to entry in the political conversation are lower, elites ostensibly have less ability than before to control the narrative.

Twitter's decision to move against McCain is, in a sense, a challenge to Shirky's thesis-a gamble that it is still possible for elites to aggressively delineate "the outside edges of acceptable conversation." We're just talking about a different set of elites: socially liberal Silicon Valley executives rather than centrist newspapermen and party establishmentarians.

Ivy League Crybullies vs. Survivor of a Soviet labor camp: Guess Who Needs 'Emotional Support'?

"So there you have it; a group of Ivy League crybullies worn out from the emotional toll of protesting Natan Sharansky, a former dissident and survivor of years of confinement, including solitary confinement, in harsh Soviet prison camps. Is there a better indication of the decline of American higher-ed culture than a bunch of Ivy Leaguers at risk of emotional breakdown due to the presence of one of the great, stoic heroes of the Cold War on their campus?"

66 The #Gamergate stuff is simple enough. It was a deliberate ploy by the gamer media to declare it a "harassment" campaign by the Right.

That's why Adam Baldwin coined the #gamergate tag in the first place - because it was revealed that the gaming journalists were on a secret mailing-list, where they coordinated their attacks on gamers.

In fact it was Milo who got the syringes and dead animals delivered to his mail box. It was the people complaining about the journalistic malfeasance who got the threats to their lives and livelihoods.

The Left's counter to #gamergate? #gamerghazi. Chortle, chortle. Nontroversy. Right-wing hysteria. (Telling, what they thought of the protoISIS attack on US personnel in Libya, at the same time.)

So, politics being downstream of culture, the libs aimed to take it, and probably won. Their enemies were the usual... Racist, sexist, homophobe blah blah blahdy blah. And many of them, pathetic saplings with no clue about politics, still have no idea what ran them over.

Video games represents one of the few parts of the culture they don't have complete control over, and they can't tolerate not controlling it. The whole gamergate kerfluffle was their attempt to gain control of it by their usual tactics - creating false crises, then running forward with "concerned" parties that wanted "common sense" changes that would give them total control over what gets produced.

The issue with gamergate started with revelations that a female video game developer was sleeping with video game journalists in exchange for positive reviews. It started as a simple industry/media corruption story.

The gaming media, unwilling to be called out on their corruption, started playing victim cards left and right, calling gamers (their own target demographic) misogynistic.

Gamers responded gloriously, thoroughly vetting the gaming media and discovering what a wretched hive of scum and villainy it was. All of the usual Lefties tried to back the corrupt gaming media and got a thorough bruising, and they weren't happy about it. Hence the controversy.

One in 10k reasons why the GOP deserves no respect.

They've watch as almost every American enterprise and institution is slowly compelled to bow the the Left's marching orders. And they've done nothing to roll that back .

It's tragic in a way.

It's also something we should have seen coming.

145 Gamergate, as I understand it, is about the video gaming community, video games, video game creaters and reviewers , and feminism

women who created video games started to complain about the sexism in video games, and that the games they wrote werent popular because the gaming community was sexist. Gaming blogs and publications agreed with the women and wrote scathing reviews attacking both the games and the people who enjoyed them. Turns out some of the complaining women were sleeping with the game reviewers and columnists. Then the complaining women complained when these compromising relationships were revealed, and set about doxxing and swatting people who disagreeed with them in an attempt to stifle thier legitimate criticism

172 Im2bo, the thing to remember which somehow tragically is always forgotten is this:

The strength of that sacrifice i.e. D-Day and WW2 was so tremendous, such that it elevated American/FreeWorld society to the level where whiny, morally/intellectually lazy/bankrupt snowflake syndrome to where it is today.

It will take the pendulum swinging/supreme sacrifices back the other way eg 1914 or 1939 to melt all the snowflakes, which i hasten to suggest has already begun slowly and sometimes imperceptibly but unmistakably.

177 Wannabe thought police declared that Gamers were misogynistic racist unpersons.

yabutt, that was after the story broke about media (professional) reviews of games was being manipulated, and the SJW counter attack was an attempt to deflect attention away from that manipulation of professional reviews.

(as I understand the timeline) the SJW were caught out, and countered with an attack on the gamers, who then really brought the hurt. It really wasn't about the video games being anti women.

178 Cant and slang are great fun....

Since this is a smart military blog, how about some Frog military slang from Napoleon's Grande Armee? Now you too can use the Grognards' terms for brothels, bedbugs, amputations, booze, bayonet charges, military engineers, radical lefties, and many more items of interest to the military mind.

"Les Goddams" or "Les Rosbifs" = The British infantry
"Les autres chiens" = The Austrians (autrichiens in French)
"Marie-Louise" = an inexperienced draftee (1813-1815; the real Marie-Louise was Napoleon's second wife)
"Vrai bougre" = Veteran campaigner

181 "The issue with gamergate started with revelations that a female video game developer was sleeping with video game journalists in exchange for positive reviews.

Hence the controversy."

==============

That is as straightforward and honest description as you will get of what happened. Much much more so then even say wikipedia. The industry is full of leftists and gamer media is heavily locked down by leftists top to bottom.

The meta issue is that many gamers still like guns, strong males, murdering assholes, and sexy females. That plus their lack of total control over the medium is what really drives the left batshit crazy so this was bound to happen.

The Levitt and Donohue claim that abortion has reduced crime rates is
comical. There is a steep drop off in crime in the mid nineties that
they state is because of all of the unwanted babies that didn't grow up
to be criminals because they got aborted.

They completely ignore the contribution of digital cameras and cell phones as a crime deterrent.

Posted by: Lemmiwinks at February 23, 2016 11:43 PM (z+4T3)

Way more importantly for youth crime, that is when home video game systems dropped in price and became readily available. Kids stayed home to blow shit up on their TV's instead of going out d getting into trouble.

For adults, the late 80's to mid 90's is when states got tired of revolving door criminals and instituted three strike and truth in sentencing laws. Crime rates likely dropped because criminals were locked up for much longer periods and so weren't available to commit further crimes.

256 156 The Levitt and Donohue claim that abortion has reduced crime rates is comical. There is a steep drop off in crime in the mid nineties that they state is because of all of the unwanted babies that didn't grow up to be criminals because they got aborted.

They completely ignore the contribution of digital cameras and cell phones as a crime deterrent.

Posted by: Lemmiwinks at February 23, 2016 11:43 PM (z+4T3)

Isn't one of the big problems of that claim is that it doesn't account for drops in crimes in states where abortion was legal before Roe vs. Wade? Meaning that a state where abortion was legal before would have the drop happen earlier. I'm betting that is not even close to the case.

271 Gamergate started when a wannabe feminist game developer whipped up a shitty game called Depression Quest which for some reason got fantastic reviews in the gaming press even though it was almost universally panned in gaming forums.

Some gamers decided to peak under the covers and found that the Depression Quest developer was sleeping with one of the gaming reviewers and that bit of info went viral in the gaming world.

So the feminist developer Zoe Quinn and her ugly tranny buddy Brianna Wu went to her buddy Anita Sarkeesian, a shrieking batshit crazy feminist who somehow got influential jobs in the media decided to punish those evil misogynistic white males who are the majority of the gaming customers.

For once the SJW's met a target that fired back with quite hard hitting effect and the SJW's freaked out that the Gamergaters didn't surrender.

While I am not a gamer, I took quite an interest in GG because it showed that you can fight back against these proggie fascists and you can win if you can take the massive heat when the empire strikes back.

341 My biggest hope for Trump is that the left couldn't help themselves but relentlessly try to cheap shot him and he couldn't help but to kick dirt in their faces.

That may restrain his more regressive instincts on on social issues

And an America first sweep of trade laws is long long overdue.

That's my thinking and I why I am not as panic'd of a Trump win as some. Or am I missing something? I think his VP pick will tell us how plans to govern. It sounds off but I actually think he would do well with Romney as VP to help him get things done. "Big picture" guys or loudmouths always need a technocrat I don't know anyone better suited and willing to accept the shitstorm of public office.

342 Gaming blogs and publications agreed with the women and wrote scathing reviews attacking both the games and the people who enjoyed them. Turns out some of the complaining women were sleeping with the game reviewers and columnists.

Hmm. This makes me wonder about how Hillary Clinton is getting better press than she deserves. Just how many male and female journalists is she sleeping with to get them to ignore Benghazi?

Because....he is Scottish.

Because starting trade wars worked so well for us circa 1930?

Trump is a nightmare on more fronts than I care to name but let me name a few at least:

1st amendment -- Trump is A-OK with people's religious liberties being stomped on by gay marriage activists,

2nd amendment -- what Trump is saying now on the 2nd amendment is very different than his past support of an "assault weapons' ban,

5th amendment -- see his eminent domain abuse and continued defense thereof,

amnesty -- Trump has held every position from let them all stay to make them all leave but then let some or all of them back in,

Obamacare -- has repeatedly called Cruz a liar for pointing out that his past support of single payer insurance likely means he will not actually get rid of the substance of Obamacare while he simultaneously states that the individual mandate is a good thing and that he will make sure the government provides insurance for everyone.

If this country is going to elect another progressive, it might as well go full retard and elect Hillary.

The important lessons:

1. We can win
2. The other side are losers. Seriously, they're fat mentally ill people.

So locate your allies, don't shoot at them like a "moderate" does, and stand firm - they can't win if we don't surrender.

405 The post about how everything coming out was shit except for the obscure semi porny anime game that no one was going to buy got old.
Posted by: buzzion at February 23, 2016 11:38 PM (zt+N6)

As someone who buys more than a few of the semi porny anime games I seem to recall those got some equally harsh (note- not necessarily undeserved) treatment as well.

And when the people reading the thread and the author seemed to be coming from two different places it seemed half the comments became battles.

For non Gamers- imagine Ace had way too much Valu-Rite and suddenly tried pushing Dondi as the only acceptable choice - it kind of felt like that kind of a difference in world views at the end, though with fewer comparisons to a certain someone with a site about green hued sportsballs the NFL uses and reciprocal bannings being passed out in response.

...Though also without alcohol involved but rather a sober and pointed POVthat the author communicated...so maybe nothing like that example above actually.

406 Some Good points Red, thanks for your thoughts. If I may contribute a few of my own.

I get what you are saying about a leftist style union led trade war. But there is a lot of room for improvement between where we are now and that point.

fwiw I have been on the Cruz train since I watched two videos of him. One of him talking to that farmer about ethanol. But first and more importantly was one where he questioned the sierra club president. It was a thing of beauty. Never have I seen an elected republican actually do that.

But as to the other points, watching the total collapse of the originally democratically elected socialist leadership of Venezuala and post Nazi Germany I have concluded that no amount of in your face failure or scandal will ever stop the Leftist crusaders or cause them self awareness or to question their cause. To me I hear fine lets elect a caliphate and then everyone will see how much they hate the caliphate.

With the leftist hivemind, I now see they fight every hill to the death no matter how stupid or pointless. Because their leaders realize crusades are about momentum.

In many ways this is still the continued battle with the European white aristocrats that the founding Founders fled from and tried to build America against.

With Trump I think of King Herod who built the Jewish Temple to try to quell rebellion.

Ah. The cat then was the noble Belmont. I'll have to send a photo. Great old old guy. Died one October. If he had lived until the following March, he would have been twenty years old. When an animal has slept on your bed every night for that many years, it's a bit of a loss.

He's buried under a cherry tree down in back. Every spring when it blooms, I think of him. That was 17 years ago.

I had a girlfriend when I was young, who had a way with animals. I asked her why that was. She said, "Well, they're like people, you just give them all the love that you can." I never forgot that.

With that, I am out.

i had one like that. Aphrodyte, she was also a noble soul. Spent the night with the new dog on the floor curled against him, to let him know this place was gonna be waaaaay better than the office at the local pound where i got him. He always worshiped her after that, which is uncommon in a Blue heeler. I will see if i can send one in for the pet thread of her and the Naked One. They were best friends and slept with me in my arms every night. the only times they were not sleeping ON me, they were snuggled by the bed with my dog Wally. Now all residing in the Land Of Happy Memory. Breaks my heart, because there are moments i forget they are not still here, then i see the little orange faces of the current cats (and the current white kitten what places fetch, and his Dilute tortie adopted sister what also plays fetch) and its amazing to me that life does in fact go on. Wow. whether you like it or not.

421 Hi,
I'm in thread that Ace posted.
One last time- Please pray for my friend Gayle, who has fallen twice in the past week, further injuring her Stage IV Brain Cancer. Her husband updated FB tonight to write he rarely uses FB & felt he owes it to her friends, that his heart is broken & he is at the hospital ( could be hospice) & hoped to bring her home for 4-6 days, but it's not going to happen.

Gayle or her husband & daughter ask for prayers for God to take her soon & peacefully. Doctors said 1-2 weeks Monday.

Please pray for Gayle & her family that she dies soon & without pain.

Thank you, I know you will pray.

Our Father is not in hiding; he is not in arbitrary seclusion. He has mobilized the resources of divine wisdom in a never-ending effort to reveal himself to the children of his universal domains. Another man who experiencedt he gulags because of his faith (But in his case he was Catholic) was Walter Ciszek, a RC priest. He was in tortured in Lubyianka and the sent to the gulags-and there's a website "The Walter Ciszek Prayer League" which has a sections on meditations-where he talks about his experiences and his faith.. I can't get the website on my computer now. Hopefully that's just because of my computer, not because the website is gone Ciszek is no longer alive He and Sharansky-giants among men.
