50 The caucuses in Nevada appear to be a joke. Someone posted a story a few days ago regarding the democrat caucuses that Reid went to the various casinos and asked them to have the culinary union workers go to the caucuses, which of course, they were then asked to vote for Hillary. How many of them, do you think, were versed in the two democrat candidates and had actually planned to caucus?

This reminds me of the story of the Somali's being bussed to polls in Columbus Ohio to vote in the last election. Along with "help" with marking their ballots.

164 If Mario still sucks on Super Tuesday,

the GOPe will flip to Kasich and use Mario just to keep Cruz in check.

Then, plan to go to the convention with a Kasich/Mario ticket coming out of deadlock.

Carson is just a pawn in all of this now. But, fuck him for keeping the water muddied. He needs to get out now.

The sooner we can get this race down to 2 or 3 the better for Cruz or Trump, but that won't happen.

Cruz needs to go hard on Mario and hopefully knock him off.

Trump would be smart to go hard on Kasich before he becomes a factor in the midwest states,

and drive him into the dirt.

That leaves the GOPe with only Cruz or Trump going strong into the convention,

which means they'll back The Donald.

Not my preferred outcome but perhaps Cruz can leverage Veep.

I can't see Trump as worse than Kasich and Mario so that's okay for me.

But, I still would like Cruz to catch fire and have it be mano a mano between him and Trump-

For depriving Cuba of the use of the base, and the indignity they suffered, Cuba will receive reparations in the form of foreign aid.

Big problem with the EO thing. It is currently illegal for Obama to bring the terrorists to the US. The only way to get around that is for Congress to change the law and as I mentioned there are a majority of Dems who don't want this either. Last November, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act by a vote of 91-3 and in that bill was language that specifically prohibited bringing GITMO prisoners to the US.

Yea, I know Obama like to ignore the law all the time but that is usually to ignore enforcing laws. This would require actively breaking the law and I think that might be a step too far even for Obama.

The Cuban people are not free and when asked about why he was breaking his promise and visiting Cuba, he said because it would be "fun".

Why? He'd never pick up Rubio's supporters - they'll go to Kasich, etc. He could go after Carson and collect those but I think that's dicey at best. Which, as an aside, reminds me of a recent experience. I attended the Orthodox burial of a neighbor, and also gave a ride to her elderly next-door neighbor.

I approached the Rabbi, who I have met before, and shook hands. As I introduced the neighbor lady she put out her hand, and the Rabbi recoiled slightly, explaining that he could not touch females.

My neighbor, who is a wonderful person, was slightly surprised (as was I), but not disturbed by the moment.

Ignorant me assumed that the 'no touch' was associated with occasion of a funeral. I looked it up went I returned home, and got some wisdom. Among the Orthodox, touching of any females other than wives/children by males is forbidden.

A very good rule when one thinks about it, but a little off-putting among those of us who take casual touching for granted.

293 Which brings us to the other miscalculation. Cruz's identification as the evangelical candidate is not his best feature; his best feature is that if you elect him president the entire city of Washington, D.C. will have a collective stroke. Why? They fear, and reasonably so, that with Cruz the Washington game of self-dealing, crony capitalism, bureaucratic waste, abuse of power, and palace intrigue comes to a screeching halt. Others have made promises about cutting the size and scope of the federal government; Cruz is someone who's actually serious about it and carries the hatred of the people who benefit from the abuse around as a badge of honor. And poll after poll shows that's something voters beyond the GOP can get behind.

405 Why?

How is a Trump presidency and improvement over Hillary or Bernie? Up until 2 years ago, Trump was just as vocal and advocate of the same things that Hillary and Bernie are campaigning on today.

I really don't care if the David Brooks Republicans don't join Trump, they are a tiny sliver compared to all the crossover appeal he has, but if you think Hillary or Bernie Sanders would be better for America than Trump, you were never really a conservative to begin with.

Someone who respects the 2nd Amendment, takes on illegal immigration, cut taxes, repeal ObamaCare etc vs a socialist that wants free college and 90% tax rates.

"the American people will respond if these issues are properly discussed with them, and nobody really did until Trump, and he surged to the top," Sessions noted. The American people are thinking, and they are concerned about both of these issues, and Trump has gained support on that."

I completely disagree with you there. Trump is saying things his supporters want to hear and that's ok. He is projecting to their tastes, that's what a brilliant salesman does. We know Trump by his past actions, hell we know all the other candidates by their past actions. It is neither dishonest to hold someone accountable to their past actions nor is it cherry picking to bring up actual video evidence of it when it is denied.
I support Cruz but disagree with some of his positions. For the most part Cruz has been consistent so I'm happy with that. Thing is one can't be upset for someone else bring up other candidates inconsistencies. Trump just happens to be the most inconsistent candidate on the republican side because he's been on camera so much and was a democrat most of his life. It's amazing the culture of victimization and paranoia some people on the right (well, given a very ample definition of right) have. Their entire worldview is based on one and only one principle: "those people think they are better than me, everything they say has the hidden meaning of degrading people like me, they're out to get me and if I'm not doing better it's because of them".
No matter if any of those things are true - some guy could say "the sun rises in the east" and the response would be "Sure. They know so much better. We rubes can't tell east from west or read a compass. Time to march to their cardinal points arrangement." (for some reason, they love the almost hegemonic use of sarcasm).
Someone should study this. It's very similar to what happens with black culture (and gives rise to the Al Sharptons/black lives matter of the world - even the inclination for conspiracy theories is similar) but I think at this point has actually got worse.

As I recall, all that "holly-roller" stuff happened in Iowa, not New Hampshire or South Carolina. I do recall him giving testimony at some church he was invited to, but I didn't see it as much in South Carolina.

I think the media's expectation of him getting the majority of evangelical votes lends a false narrative to Cruz's "big loss" of evengelicals in South Carolina.

486 Not every person walks into the country. What about those coming across in shipping containers etc. There is also the problem of overstays. There are a lot of people that come in on H1bs and student visas and just don't go home when those run out. Roughly half my ex's family got in that way from Albania. When they finished/quit school they just didn't go home. Someone hires them anyway and then in time they get an h1b and later residency.

It's not fair to the people who do the process.

517 A Guantanamo moment.

Capt John Woodward Philip in USS Texas led the bombardment that took Guantanamo, 15 June 1898. Two weeks later his squadron pursued as the Spanish fleet tried to break out of Santiago Bay. The Spanish ships were gallantly maneuvered, but had inferior coal, their powder had been sawdusted, and some had their guns removed. Like all large-vessel encounters the battle was a goat rope, but the Americans had the range and speed on them and they were utterly lost.

As the Spanish flagship lay burning, Philip said to his men, "Don't cheer, boys. Those poor devils are dying."

Some aboard Bismarck said the same about Hood. It's a battleship-sailor thing, perhaps the most humane battle cry ever uttered, and Stillwelesque in its uniquely American view of war. Grandest traditions of the Fleet.

I think there is a lot of truth to that. And it works both ways, Minus teh Donald, most of his voters would jump in for Cruz.

But if Rubio becomes the anointed one ,expect some protest write in votes for Cruz or Trump or a staycation at home on election day for many voters.

I can't bring myself to crossover the Rubicon. I don't see any REAL difference between Rubio and Hillary. You end up in 3rd world Hell with either one, but you take a slightly longer journey to get there with Rubes.

****

It isn't a dumb question but is a premise with which I disagree whole-heartedly.

I believe that any private business should be able to serve, or deny service to, anybody for any reason whatsoever. I want to KNOW that the asshole who owns a business is an asshole who doesn't want to serve me.

Societal and economic pressures will prevail and the worst will find themselves out of business.

Seriously, who cares? I don't have a problem with people who have religious beliefs, and I certainly prefer a president that does. But it is pretty obvious the media (and others) want to turn Cruz into the Rick Santorum single-issue candidate, which he certainly is not.

Glenn Beck supports Cruz, Sarah Palin supports Trump. I say even-steven.

570 OK, I'm by no means a member of the Branch Trumpidians, but that video of the Precious SJW Socialist Snowflake is freakin' hilarious.

571 We should learn from the hawk. Merciless but yet merciful. The turtle dove probably knew that it was dead the second the hawk had it. The hawk brought that death quickly.

Then he feasted.

572 I still have yet to get an answer to the question: what is the purpose of twitter?

I know what it does. I'm asking what benefit does anyone get out of it? Assume twitter was neutral and didn't discriminate based on political views. What is the upside of it? I just don't get the plus of having a never ending stream of 140 character messages thrown at you all day long.

Knew some Marines who served at GTMO, and they absolutely loved it. Actually had good relations with the Cubans at the fenceline too.

Dear heavens, I hope that imbecile doesn't try to give the whole base back. Surely THAT would be a hill to die on???

Gitmo holds a special place in my heart, too.

But, yes. TFG actually wants to give the whole thing back. I think he's trying to out-Jimmy Jimmy Carter with his Panama Canal deal.

577 There's no point in being on Twitter if your tweets aren't coming through. Even less point if Twitter cancels your account(s) and won't tell you why. You can't tweet without an account, people.

578 I don't know about you 'rons, but I welcome a twitterverse where I can feel safe from any words that will hurt my feelings. Free speech has always been one of my least favorite inalienable rights and I'm happy to see it go.
Now if we could only do something about those guns and allowing Repuglicans to vote, I could get a decent night's sleep.

Working memory overload, Ace? Hardly.
It's called denial. Their beliefs are narcissism based.
They NEED to feel good about themselves and theysee themselves as wonderful. Admitting their motives are "selfish" would damage that belief.
So the denial kicks in. Dr. Sanity liked to point out such people tend to suffer from pathological denial of reality and the examples in your prior post are textbook.

581 FS - I enjoyed the Biker Saves Abused Dog story, too. I will be adding it to my list of links in a little while.

Speaking of

For many years, off and on, I've been bookmarking links, mostly political but could be anything linkable - on my "blog heap o'links" page (yeah, stuck myself with that dumb name long ago - link in nic).

Basically, nobody goes there, and that's fine, because I just did it so I could easily re-find things I liked. It's not all the latest news or anything - but I do link to Vic, Political Hat, Gates of Vienna and other sites that keep up with the current.

Well, the other day I emailed BlazingCatFur that I liked the photos they publish, and in passing as a courtesy mentioned that I frequently link or h/t BCF stories.

Lo and b'hold, BCF linked to the blog-heap in a post. Looking at the stats, my hits spiked majorly after that... for one day only, as such things go.

Had to happen during a few days when I've not had a lot of time to post things, wouldn'tcha know.

Hey, brunch is served. Huevos con arroz y frijoles. ¡Olé!

583 I thought maybe the press backlash might fix some of the issues with twitter.

I think a lot of the right jumped on twitter around the time of the Wiener thing. It was exciting to watch the whole thing come across in real time and get to talk at some of the players.

Then again I found about the backlash myself and got off the damn thing. There is still some asshole out there claiming I hacked Tony Weiner's account.

587 Trump pledged he would prosecute Hillary if President.

This idea that he's only in this race spending millions of his own money just to tip the scales in Hillary's favor because they're secret vagina buddies is weapons great retard truther level thinking.
Posted by: Burn It Down at February 23, 2016 11:52 AM (qHgBB)

Weapons-grade truther level thinking is believing that George W. Bush deliberately lied about Iraq WMDs in order to get us into war with them. Which is what Trump said, but I'm sure you're cool with that so, whatever.

All I'm doing is interpreting Trump's current behavior in light of his very, very recent past as a loyal Democrat -- Donating money to Pelosi, talking up single-payer health insurance, supporting Hillary's 2008 run. Oh what's that? He doesn't believe in those things any more? He changed his mind now, and it's "dishonest" for Republicans to call attention to them? So if he pledges to prosecute Hillary, I guess we're supposed to expect he won't change his mind about that, too.
