Overnight Open Thread (2-18-2016)

Okay there's been a lot of assholery going on recently and not nearly enough banning. I blame myself partially for the latter and frankly I'm thinking it's about time for a culling, possibly even a full-on decimation.

So let me disabuse everyone of a couple common misconceptions:

1. Having intense feelz over X,Y, or Z means it's okay to be a dick to those who dare to disagree.

2. Being a super patriot conservative == a license to asshole.

Nope.

Henceforth I'll start enforcing the lesser known sub-part d of the AoSHQ Bylaws in addition to the usual actionable offenses:

d) Any actions or behaviors deemed by Ace or one of the cob-bloggers to be detrimental to the best interests of the blog shall also be considered grounds for banning.

So consider this your fair legal warning.

Most of my life, I've been breaking the law by using 5 gallon buckets for gas and other fuel cans. Still do, but I do have proper gas cans. I got one of the new ones with the fancy spout lock thingy. My father promptly tore it up. Got a new spout for it, and showed him how the damnable thing was supposed to work.

He nodded, he got it and don't bother him. He tore it up in few days. So, back to 5 gallon buckets, and the spills.

Re the Stockdale Paradox: I'm a living, breathing testament to it's effectiveness and recognized the power of it long before I knew who Adm. Stockdale was.

I can't think of anyone who was a finer example or who could have articulated better the need for holding on to hope without being crippled by it.

As an aside, I owe my adoration of Dennis Miller to Adm Stockdale. It was Miller's televised appearance at GWU and his righteous smackdown of the shits who made jokes at Stockdale's expense, which won me over. I'll never forget it.

Bouncer story-time:

In my mis-spent youth, there was a time when I was head-over-heels with a perfectly charming young lady I'd known for years. Well, there was a certain ebb and flow to things, and it was during one of those ebb-tides that this happened.

She had met someone, she said, and wanted my opinion of him. (Yes, yes, I know, I know....but my 20-something self was not so wise and wily.)

Anyway, the three of us meet up at a bar nearby to my place.

There's no booth or table, so we sit at the bar and have a few. He's a genuinely nice guy - sincerely, I mean that. He's good-looking, comes from a good family, and comes from money, too.

L1 at Harvard - I can see he'd be quite the catch for her. And I can tell he's absolutely smitten with my charming friend.

He excuses himself to go to the mens' room and a booth opens up. I tell her to go and grab it for us while I settle the tab.

I pay up for the lady, and for me, and lean in to speak with the bartender, on the QT.

"Look," I tell him, "the lady and I don't want to get involved - this guy just sort of glommed onto us. But you see that guy heading toward the can? He's been stealing tips off the bar since he got here."

"Thanks..." the barkeep said, and jerked his head toward the mens' room, and two neckless Irish thugs headed that way.

She saw him dragged out of the back of the house, a bloody, beaten mess, and thrown out so hard he bounced on the pavement outside.

"Guess something must have happened in the bathroom," I said, and shrugged.

430 This is a catch-22 question(s) working on formulating:

- Does one make an oath to support the Constitution upon taking Federal Office, or the Legislature, or POTUS, or SCOTUS?

------ or ------

- As a(n) conservative / originalist / texturalist does the Legislature, or POTUS, or SCOTUS get to define terms in the Constitution?

With regard to either question, most people I have known who have taken the oath to support the Constitution (upon further examination) support SCOTUS, or whatever else is convenient, so long as it supports their goals/interests (whether they self identify as liberal or conservative).

I would think tha all candidates for office (including the D's) would claim to support the Constitution without reservation as none are calling for any amendments.

Buddy Holly chartered that plane that crashed and killed him and Richie Valens and the Big Bopper because he was all out of clean underwear and really wanted to shave a little time off the trip to the next stop on the tour so he could do some laundry.

He chartered that plane for himself and his band. But the Big Bopper was coming down with the flu, so he asked for a seat on the plane so he could get a little extra rest. His request was granted.

And then Richie Valens was just fascinated by the plane. He asked if he could have a seat on it, too, because he'd never flown on a small plane before.

Waylon Jennings offered to wager his seat on a coin toss. Valens won the coin toss, but, really, Jennings was the actual winner there, don't you think?

Anyway, Holly was annoyed with Jennings over that. He told Jennings, "I hope that bus you're taking freezes up in this cold, with you on it."

And Jennings responded, "Yeah, well, I hope your plane crashes."

440 Well, today has been quite a day. My Suburban got involved in a crash, and I wasn't even in it. Long story, and quite a clusterfuck. Feel free to scroll over.

I am on a road trip home to Alberta from Arizona. Got as far as Ogden, UT, last night. Well, 3 miles short of Ogden, but there was a Motel 6 for me and the doggeh, so I stopped. Past the urban mess of SLC, at any rate. Got in at 0200. This morning at 10:00 A.M., I'm on the road again. Got some food and coffee at "Farr West" and carried on north on I-15. Nasty strong crosswinds, and rain mixed with sleet. Near Tremonton, UT, I spotted a Texaco station with cash Diesel at $1.69 per gallon, so I stopped and filled up. Had to get off I-15 to do that, of course. Coming out of the fuel stop, with a full tank, anda fresh cup of coffee, I noticed |I was was on Biz Loop for I -15. So I carried on north on the 2-lane. Weather was deteriorating fast, and I didn't really want to be on the freeway in it.

I don't think I had gone 5 miles, following a school bus at 40 mph on a road posted at 55, fighting very strong crosswinds and heavy sleet. We pass some building on the west, and then hit an open patch, where snow and sleet had drifted across the road. I saw two small cars had left the road, and were in the ditch or farm field on the east side. I stopped, without skidding or otherwise losing control, and pulled as far off the road as dared, a good yard past the fog line. I had trouble getting out, the wind was pushing so hard on the door. Determined that neither vehicle had any injured persons on board. I figured I could pull the nearer car, at least, out, with my tow strap. I went back to my vehicle and put on a warm jacket, gloves, and tuque. Again I had the devil of a time getting out the door, with the wind trying to blow it closed.

That's when things went from bad to worse. Out of nowhere, a red Chevy pickup comes flying off the road, fishtails through the ditch between my rig and the stranded cars, and carries on, climbing back out of the ditch, and back on the road. Turns out, that was the father of the girl in the farther-stranded car. He goes a half-mile up the road to a gas station, turns around, and comes back at a saner rate of speed. He hitches tow chains onto the nearer car (not his daughter's) and gets it out. The driver of that car sensibly pulls off the road into a nearby driveway. Now this Dad is kind of haywire. He never told me that it was his daughter's car stuck out in the field, or that he had decided to leave that recovery to a wrecker. So I'm still laying out my tow strap, in anticipation of using it to pull his truck while he pulls the stranded car.

Now yahoo #2 arrives, driving a white Ford F150. He's going about 50 mph, and hits the brakes, starts sliding towards my truck, realizes his mistake, guns the engine, misses my truck, and hits the Nissan Sentra with the other guy's daughter and her boyfriend in it, trying to get warm. They aren't hurt, but their car, which was hitherto undamaged, gets badly beaten up. So I standing there, with the Dad, and the driver of the one recovered car, all of us going "Holy Shit!"

Then along comes a Hyundai. Driver panics, hits the brakes (I don't know why, the traveled portion of the highway was clear!), and smacks right into the back of my Suburban, hard. Drives it ahead about 5 feet, and it was in Park. I was standing about 20 yards in front of it at the time. I made my way back, and looked into the Hyundai. It was all smashed to hell in the front, it's front licence plate shish-kebabed on my trailer hitch, and pieces of the bumper scattered around. Both airbags had gone off, and the windshield was smashed. Passenger door would only open a few inches. But the airbags had done good work. The driver, a young woman, was basically unhurt. She complained of sore knees, and her face was red from the airbag friction, but she was able to move about, and was not bleeding anywhere.

I called 911, and presently a Sheriff, ambulance, fire truck, and State Trooper showed up The trooper got our license and insurance data, and took pictures, and printed out an accident report on the spot. I don't know if anyone got ticketed, I didn't, anyway.

But my Suburban may well be a constructive write-off. The body is pretty racked. Driver's side rear door won't open; passenger side rear door only closes on half-latch, and has a gap at the top. Even my driver's side front door is hard to close. Haven't tried the barn doors at the back, yet, but they may be OK. Trailer hitch took the brunt of the impact, and transferred it to the frame, which must be bent in an arch a little. The truck goes down the road fine, and steers and stops normally, but there is a lot of wind noise. But a 20 year-old truck with that degree of damage is probably a write-off.

The doggeh was in the Suburban, too, but seems to be OK. She is snoozing on the bed at the motel here in Helena, MT.

It is a testament to the safety engineering in the Hyundai that she could impact a much larger vehicle and still end-up in relatively good shape.....but it has been my experience that more recent drivers take such engineering for granted and drive like clueless imbeciles, figuring that the car will save their lives and they've got insurance.

496 Out of the blue, I ended up talking with a guy who was a manufacturer's rep for a bunch of completely obscure (but incredibly necessary) industrial product companies.

His entire professional life is spent on the road all over the western States.

Contingency plans rule his life. No matter where he is, he has detailed maps pre-downloaded for routing, lodging, fuel, meals, and hospitals. The latter being scarce in big rectangular states. Plus he's got an extensive survival suite stowed in his trunk.

Needless to say, he watches weather like a hawk. Having been stuck in the middle of nowhere under gawdawful conditions a couple of times in my life, I wish I had enjoyed the benefit of his counsel a quarter of a century ago.

Maybe I did? I avoid I-15 through Butte. Exit I-15 at mile 63 at Dillon. Highway 41 through Twin Bridges and Silver Star, then 55 to Whitehall, Then MT 2 for a few short miles, then MT 69 to Boulder, rejoin I-15 at mile 165. 90 miles on the odometer, 102 miles via I-15. Several high passes avoided. My route has only one grade of any consequence, and a few "slow down" bends. Mostly valley grade, straight to gently winding. Less stressful than I-15 through the Divide several times.

SWAT was the shizzle though when I was a kid. The opening sequence with the visuals along with the music just did it for me. (That shot of the squad grabbing their rifles from the rack became a stock shot that was used in just about every episode.)

But I never could figure out how Hondo Harrelson went from being a happily married dad in season one to a horndog bachelor (not even a mention of his kids, let alone his wife, who were all regulars the first season) in season two. Just what the hell happened between seasons LOL. Continuity was not that show's strong point.

I've looked at it a couple of times since The Great Commenter Purge but I don't really plan on going back there again. Ed Morrissey's "FU" attitude about the whole thing was just too much.

This has made me realize how much I've missed the Horde and the charm this place has.
