13 Wednesday Weirdness:

We've already been Vic-free the past couple of days. That's unsettling enough.

Then, yesterday, we had no morning thread, just went directly from the overnight to the headlines. Remember? Well...

Yesterday, I went to look at something in the headlines thread and it was missing. In the "recent entries" list in the left-hand column on the front page, there was the Overnight, there was the Art thread, but no Headline post in between. Wasn't there in the "next" link on the Overnight page-without-comments, either.

So I turned to the February archives.
http://ace.mu.nu/archives/2016_02.php

At first it didn't seem to be there, either, but 'way down this list, you can find "Wednesday News Dump 2/17/16 [Misanthropic Humanitarian]" in between "Morning Thread (2-16-2015)" and "Tuesday Morning News Dump 2/16/16 [Misanthropic Humanitarian]." That's what the previous/next links say on the post-only not-the-comments versions as well.
http://ace.mu.nu/archives/361566.php

For no reason I can figure out. It's not the post number. It's just... down there. In case anybody was looking.

Morning (whatever morning the hamsters think it is), Glories!

31 I just watched all of MSNBC's Trump Town Hall from last night.

And I'm about to type some words I never thought I'd type.

Anyone who's ever read my posts knows I hate the vast majority of the MSM with the fire of a thousand suns. And last night's hosts, Scarborough and Mika, have been two of my long-time favorite targets. But fair is fair.

The format was fantastic, the hosts were excellent, the audience participation was handled perfectly, and the entire production was pure class. And I have to say, neither FNC or CNN could have (or would have) pulled it off like MSNBC did.

I'm actually praising MSNBC. And Joe and Mika. I feel like I'm in Bizzaro land today, but so be it.

Now I want to see ALL the candidates do one just like it, ESPECIALLY Cruz. I think...no, I KNOW that Cruz could get his message out to the independents if given a forum and a format that is fair and balanced, and I have no doubt he could get MSNBC to do it if he wanted to do it.

MSNBC. Fair and balanced. I don't know what the hell is going on anymore. (I cut the cable 8 months ago, so I'm serious, I really don't know much of what's going on anymore with cable news.)

But, would MSNBC be as fair with Cruz? Trump IS tight with Joe and Mika, after all.

The other day, six Wal-Mart trucks, another truck, and car were hit by bullets. No injuries.

Union thugs? Black lives matterers? Muslim snipers? None of the above, it seems. Yesterday, two teenagers were arrested. Dad of one of them tipped off the police that they were out "hunting" at the time of the vehicle shootings. Crisis, apparently, over.

53 Good morning all

From this date in 1944- Anzio, Italy

Feb 18, 1944 - The EZ Dog Journal
Attack continues. German infantry have pushed ours back about three thousand yards on the main salient below Carroceto. He seemed to be rushing in reserves (est at 14 Bns) at that point. Our Artillery laid down a terrific barrage. All attacks repelled. Plans for CA tomorrow made up.

Carroceto => crossroads known as "The Factory" was fulcrum of the Anzio campaign.
Bns = battalions
CA = counterattack

When your beachhead is only 7-10 miles deep, being pushed back 3000 yards (1.7 miles) is pretty darned significant. The Germans were determined to push the Allies back into the Tyrrhenian Sea, and this next few days will be the main thrust.

Dan Kruger: "Democrat Strategy: It's all Trump"

[For Democrats,] ...It's a tough situation, and by 2015 you're drinking a lot. You can't come up with a way to win.

Suddenly, there is hope. Donald Trump announces on June 16.

Hallelujah, you know how to handle this, you've done this before! You have a strategy.

You and our buddies in the media engage the strategy, and within days, start reporting on it as if you are innocent bystanders swept up in the phenomenon you created....

56 Re: Kruschev and the unintended vagaries of history and technology.

In 1960 Kennedy successfully ran for President by exploiting the issue of a "Missile Gap" between the US and the USSR. Supposedly the US trailed the Soviets in missile technology.

Which was sort of true. The US trailed the Soviets in heavy lift missiles because the other parts of the US nuclear triad were so overwhelmingly superior.

In particular our nuke design was so much better that we could make the war heads smaller and so did not need as much heavy lift capacity as the Russkies needed to lift their huge, crude warheads.

It takes a lot of rocket power to orbit a payload. So when it came time for the space race, the USSR had heavier lift to orbit capability because of their crude nuke designs. Our heavy lift designs --Atlas, Titan, Saturn -- were still in the testing phases because we didn't need them as much.

All the public saw was the showy satellite orbits which is what JFK exploited.

The classified U-2 intelligence proved there was no ICBM missile gap. That was bad for Kchev but good for JFK. Because JFK was a just a lying Democrat doing what lying Democrats do.

72 Re Trump...

The morons here are normally pretty politically astute, but many of you don't get it. Many Trump supporters are not backing him because of what his policies are or who he is personally. So attacks on those fronts have been utterly useless and will continue to be.

Trump is not the messenger, he is the message. And that message is "Blow me, Republican Party".

He's not our candidate, he's our weapon. And the intended victim is the GOP establishment.

Me, I'd tell 'em they can come pick it up or order elsewhere, but I ain't the boss, and neither is our underpaid, overworked son. Not like it hurts the pizza place profits any.

101 When your beachhead is only 7-10 miles deep, being pushed back 3000 yards (1.7 miles) is pretty darned significant. The Germans were determined to push the Allies back into the Tyrrhenian Sea, and this next few days will be the main thrust.

Herewith an Anzio story. (Still loving the daily diary entries, Muldoon!)

I was walking around the beaches of Anzio a few years ago and there were brick and concrete structures along the shoreline. You could tell they were old, but not how old. I was wondering whether they were improvised structures from when we were digging in in '44, or whether they were Roman old.

It turned out they were remains from Nero's summer palace. The Romans were that good at brick and concrete.

The thing I learned subsequently was that the Roman secret of concrete has been lost. The Brits rediscovered something in the 17th century called Portland Concrete, which is good and which we use to this day, but it's not as good as Roman concrete.

This is why I was looking at brickworks and couldn't tell if they were 70 or 1,700 years old.

145 This is the revelation I've come to concerning Trump based on his earlier campaigning. I think when he was more of a long-shot he leveraged the belief that he had some connection to Cruz to climb higher in the polls. When he had extracted everything he needed from that then BOOM! Cruz was the enemy.

Now that's not saying he wouldn't of got some level of traction without that hint of a connection. What that means for me is the dissected groups that he is wooing now are just stepping stones towards him winning. Kind of a "duhhh", yeah I know.

And with that he's found the most exploitable ploy with Republicans because they are so absolutely desperate damaged goods. Past proof of that being grade-school kid at RNC convention, celebrities praised because they might of said one thing non-marxist in an interview, erotic trash investigations of junior GOP pol's based on just a few speeches, etc..

I think Trump's entire campaign is built around that desperation and exploiting it which gives me kind of a grimy feeling.

General John P. Lucas. Total incompetent. We took the Germans completely by surprise and had them on their heels. We could have driven them all the way to Rome and avoided tens of thousands of casualties and a protracted stalemate.

But he dug in and let Kesselring recover. The rest is tragic almost beyond belief.

Apples and oranges I believe, and covered under a different law to boot.

The FBI is trying to use the All Writs Act to compel Apple to perform a positive action. The Act and the authority therein is intended to compel someone to give up information he already has, not create new capabilities.

So it's quite proper for the Court to ask Apple to provide all information it has concerning the encryption scheme on this device. It's not proper to use the Act to force Apple to break the encryption scheme.

*****

Debatable as to the reason for the hunkering, but hunkering they did.

The invasion planners thought they would need at least 3 divisions, but primarily due to shortage of landing craft they were granted only two. The goal was a quick inland thrust to grab control of the two main highways (Rtes 6 and 7) thereby forcing Kesselring to abandon the Gustav Line or risk losing 8-10 divisions. General Lucas chose caution, and halted the advance, expecting that he would get reinforcements, but Kesselring was able to scramble the forces he needed, rush them to the Anzio front and contain the Allies. The big German attack that Dad mentions here was an all out push to crush the beachhead.

Elections have consequences. The 2014 elections have particular consequences in this case. The Senate is now Republican (or so they say) and that Senate has to approve the President's pick or not. Exercising their Constitutional power to tell the President to pound sand is neither abuse of that power nor out of the ordinary action.

Along with a substantial appearance fee, Obama demanded that crucifix's and stained glass windows be covered to prevent any hurt feelings by muslims and atheists, but mostly muslims. Plus a giant bowl of m&ms with the brown ones removed.

208 97 69 If you'll pardon this intrusion of logic, havent the
people already had a voice? Didnt a majority of the people reelect
President Obama, and doesnt he have nearly a year left to serve out his
term?

Now, if you don't really like democracy....

Democrats always oppose any nomination by Republicans. Turnabout is rare but needed.

The also elected a Republican Senate. Obama can do what he was elected to do, and so can they.

Flags half staff for Whitney Houston, not for Chris Kyle, and he did it only 6 (?) days later for the victims of the Chatanooga recruiting center victims (an afterthought). And how 'bout those rainbow lights on the WH when SSM ruling was announced?
Obama is a dick.

210 Eventually he'll be gone.
His voters will remain amongst us.

That is all.

212 And the stuff people are saying that he's really a
Democrat or a stalking horse for the Democrat candidate are just silly.
All the left-wingers I know hate Trump with a nova-like intensity, far
more than they hate any other GOP candidate.

I could support Cruz but I'm just not convinced that he can tell the
GOPe and the CoC to suck a bag of dicks and get away with it.

Trump was a Democrat until he wanted to run for office as a Republican and he still is moderate to progressive in most of his inclinations.

As for Cruz, he has spent his time in Washington telling the GOPe where to get off. The man called McConnell a liar to his face on the floor of the Senate.
