40 From the prior thread - response to rickb223 - responding to me not wanting to refight old political fights.

I don't want to do that because I think it can only be helpful to the progressives. I cannot see how refighting the political fights of the GWB administration would be any help to anyone but the Democrats. The Obama administration has enough lying around to talk about and I don't want us getting distracted away from that.

But that's me. Some people like re-arguments.

63 I don't think Trump is remotely controllable. He will do what he wants to do and that changes like the wind.

Cruz, on the other hand, has been a reliable conservative and if he strays I think it would be easier to get him back in line.
=======
I agree with both.

This is my negotiation with the GOP: Either give me Cruz or I'll give you Trump.

OTOH, I'm long of the theory that a Trump Presidency would see a roll-back of Presidential power to levels not seen since James Madison. As both parties would unite in stopping him.

Now this is a painting. It looks like a painting, not some garish smear of mixed colors. You can see the brush strokes, as you should in a real painting. It doesn't look like a photograph. It's not pixilated. It's evocative; sunset, a pleasant end to a pleasant day.

No men marching off to war to do destruction and death. No howling mad mobs in the streets. No famous or infamous personage bathed in ego, posing proudly for posterity.

This is an example of God's Work as nature intended.

I've been ruminating on that too. Maybe an impeachment and removal of a sitting president would reset things. A balancing of powers. Well.... I still contend that it was the threat of Ross Perot who made the Washington establishment balance the budget for about 10 minutes...

Then went back to spending as soon as he was no longer a threat to the two party monopoly on power....

So we really do not know how the Washington beltway will respond to an outside threat...

Already in testing in the US... in Florida.

The genetically modify mosquitoes so they can't breed, release them... and when they mate with 'wild' mosquitos.. no offspring...

So less Mosquitoes...

Safer in my mind to bring back DDT... but for that to happen the US Government would have to do something it NEVER does... and admit it was wrong.

218 So sad to learn this morning that author Pat Conroy has pancreatic cancer.

Years ago I stage-managed a play written by a friend of his, and we hung out at the opening night party. Such a sweet, funny man. His dad, who (weirdly) prided himself as the Great Santini, hung out with the cast and crew throughout the run.

Pat was in town several years ago for a book signing, and I took my son to meet him. Pat remembered me and we chatted, and he told my son, "You have a wonderful, talented mother." So nice of him. Kid was impressed.

Anyhow, I hope he beats his awful cancer.

256 Already in testing in the US...

Posted by: Don Quixote at February 16, 2016 11:32 AM (f7rv6)

I believe that sort of thing was tried years ago. They sterilized mosquitos with radiation, and then released them to mate with "wild" ones. Result, no offspring. Kind of hard to do that genetically, though. If you could create a "sterility" gene, how would you pass it on? And if you went part way, with a "low fertility" gene, then unmodified bugs would out-compete them in the available niches.

261 " What is Rachel Carson's death count?"

It took a village, of leftists. She just provided the propaganda.

There does seem to be evidence that massive overuse was a bad thing, and maybe actually did some harm to raptors. Heavily broadcasting it everywhere has other ramifications, in wiping out too many insects, upsetting other balances. But no doubt it is very useful for human habitats in the third world, and is still used but monitored by WHO. They need to use various attacks and not breed resistance, which exists in some insect populations.

As with most things, controlled moderate use is the key.

So sad to learn this morning that author Pat Conroy has pancreatic cancer.

Years
ago I stage-managed a play written by a friend of his, and we hung out
at the opening night party. Such a sweet, funny man. His dad, who
(weirdly) prided himself as the Great Santini, hung out with the cast
and crew throughout the run.

Pat was in town several years ago
for a book signing, and I took my son to meet him. Pat remembered me and
we chatted, and he told my son, "You have a wonderful, talented
mother." So nice of him. Kid was impressed.

Anyhow, I hope he beats his awful cancer.

There was a story on the news this morning about a new cancer treatment where a person's T-cells were extracted, treated with some sort of chemicals to make them extra lively and then reinjected. Several people with terminal Leukemia apparently show no sign of cancer.

They said it might be tried on other cancers as well. The T-Cells attack the tumors and remove them.

It doesn't have to be used indiscriminately.

Except the raptor population was expanding due to louse and other infestations being killed. It turns out the researchers *faked their data* and withheld dietary calcium from the captive raptors to make the eggs weak. I was sick when I found that out since I did a presentation in elementary school about the dangers of DDT to raptor eggs.

309 To be fair...

When I was in high school (albeit private) it was in the handbook that our cars could be searched at any time. I had no problem with the policy then, and I have no problem with the policy now. We actually even had a situation where a slew of guns was found inside a student's boyfriend's vehicle and the school went into lockdown.

Also, to be fair...if there was a "fishing knife" in the car of a person of a particular persuasion, IYKWIM, I would want it treated with a zero-tolerance attitude as well. Just like I was 100% for treating clock boy with zero tolerance. If I have to feel it about the goose, I have to feel it about the gander.

Finally, if a zero-tolerance policy is what it takes to police the savages in our society...I am willing to go with it. Even if it means making a goof on a fishing knife every once in a while.

cool ... Google found a patent for that, I read a little of the info. Guess they figured something out, but not sure why just spraying an oil wouldn't be easier/better. Maybe it holds it longer and sort of dispenses it slowly, or is just a way to control usage. still, pretty groovy concept.
