Overnight Open Thread (2-15-2016) – Washington's Birthday Edition

Also welcome Hot Air refugees. None of that Facebook comment BS to be found here - we're still on minx 0.7 alpha and like it that way! So grab a seat and hang out for a while. Guest services will be by eventually with the Moron signup sheet and bathroom cleaning duty roster.

Quote of the Day I

Liberals love to say things like, 'We're just asking everyone to pay their fair share.' But government is not about asking. It is about telling. The difference is fundamental. It is the difference between making love and being raped, between working for a living and being a slave. The Internal Revenue service is not asking anybody to do anything. It confiscates your assets and puts you behind bars if you don't pay.

-- Thomas Sowell

Quote of the Day II

It is remarkable how easily vast numbers of people now accept that truth is subordinate to the needs of ideological conformity - as we saw in Europe on New Year's Eve, when politicians, police and press colluded to cover up mass sexual assault - and, as their cover-up unraveled, millions of self-described progressives and feminists indignantly insisted that the cover-up had been the correct call.

In the end, the official lies will cost you your world.

-- Mark Steyn

Quote of the Day III

When you yammer about a nonexistent "rape culture" at home, and then import millions from a genuine rape culture, it's not likely to go well. And you can't acknowledge anything good about Western men, or that would defeat the entire purpose of feminism, which is to cow and silence Western men.

-- Glenn Reynolds

Quote of the Day IV

We did our best: we ate earthworms, both raw and cooked, and any other flotsam tossed up by the valley that we could keep down. We scraped a squirrel off the road and had it with wood sorrel and wild garlic. But there were Burt's regular gifts, which we had neither the discipline nor the churlishness to refuse, and lying guiltily at the bottom of the backpack were sardines, tuna and beans. "It's ridiculous to think you can know this wood like a badger," Burt said a week or so later. "You can't even know it like me. A man whose DNA has been sloshing round this wood for half a millennium knows more about a badger's world than someone who sniffs and slithers for a few weeks."

-- From the Guardian article, 'My Life As a Badger'

On the Liberal vs. Conservative View

Next, Professor Wisse explained why she is a political conservative. "When I look at any policy, I ask myself: What is the worst outcome that can happen?" Liberals, she said, are fixated on the best outcome. The liberal outlook ignores history and reality.

I found this definition unique. Actually, it makes a great deal of sense. My liberal friends in Hollywood are always telling me that the Obama-Kerry Iran deal is a good thing because, well, good stuff might result from it.

But good things rarely emerge from theocratic, Jew-hating fascists who boast of the genocide to come.

Professor Wisse closed her remarks with something Seraphic Secret has been saying for years. If history has taught anything, she said, it is this: When someone says he is going to murder the Jews, believe him.

Question: When Doesn't the MSM Mention a Republican's Party Affiliation?

Blast from the past: Red Army Faction Suspected in 2015 German Supermarket Armed Robbery

Because even terrorists need some way to pay for their retirements. And hey they've still got all those Soviet-supplied weapons and explosives from the 70s and 80s stashed away...

German police are hunting for three veteran far-left militants for attacking money vans with machine guns and a grenade-launcher, apparently seeking to pay for their retirements on the run.
Police found DNA matching that of the fugitives of the disbanded Red Army Faction (RAF) at the scene of a botched armed robbery last June, and prosecutors also linked the three to a similar attack last December.
Two men and one woman have been wanted for decades as members of the anti-capitalist RAF, also known as the Baader-Meinhof Gang, which rocked Germany with a wave of bombings, killings and kidnappings targeting political and business leaders from the 1970s to the early 1990s.

Cosmo Goes All In on Gun Control: Defines New Term, 'Gunsplaining'

Why argue an issue with a man when you just know better.

Why You Should Never Date a "Gunsplainer"

We've all met mansplainers, but have you ever met a similarly dreadful gunsplainer? He's the type of guy who will attempt to hit on you by calling you "schnookums" and, like the mansplainer, he will condescend to you about why you're safer in a world where guns are easier to buy than Sudafed, or how a good guy with a gun is the best antidote to a bad guy with a gun.

He may echo the words of National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, who said in 2013, "The one thing a violent rapist deserves to face is a good woman with a gun."

News You Can Use: How to Survive Falling Through the Ice

You might live for hours after you pass out if you can avoid drowning, but that requires some planning. After falling in, you will have about 10 minutes before your muscle and nerve fibers become too cold to function. If, after several attempts to hoist yourself out, you feel too weak to continue, lay your arms across the ice and remain still. You want your jacket to freeze in place so that when you lose consciousness, you'll be held there, your head above the water. Frozen prone at the lip of the hole, you'll remain visible and can still be saved long after you black out, a tactic Giesbrecht calls 'widening the window of opportunity for rescue.'

Horde-sourcing: my Eotech EXPS 2-2 sight must have been damaged in the canoe accident, as it has stopped turning on.

So even though I swearsies don't have anything to attach it to, I'd like it to function, just for the principle of the thing.

So in looking on the interwebs, I find that L3 is in a big pile of stink with the Feds over their products and is offering rebates.

Since I have a brick I reckon I'll take advantage.

So--has everyone but me already heard about this? Anyone else returning a sight?

And what are people buying as a replacement? I liked the thing while it worked. Like, when I walked around pretending it was attached to something and yelling bang and stuff.

[expletive deleted] I have a viewsonic monitor that has both digital and analog input. However, the damn thing insists on locking on the digital input even though my desktop puts out analog only. It is useless to me. I can't switch the damn thing back to analog.

It looks like the new windows boot up code tests the monitor, and the damn monitor thinks it should be looking for digital input.

Google doesn't help except to serve up pages of other users having the same problem.

Corrective action reads like "Hold down button one and four while standing on one foot, and jumping up and down screaming obscenities while you cycle the power on and off three times in ten seconds." (It doesn't fix the problem)

As I said, it's a rejection of objective truth.

As anyone with two functioning brain cells can tell you, the statement that there is no truth is self-refuting. Theirs is an anti-philosophy based on opposition to the principles of Western civilization, particularly its root in objectivity and reason. It seeks to replace them with subjectivity and feeling. Their way is madness.

179 Never indulge a rape fantasy. Back in I think the '90s there was some B-grade movie starring some fading blonde bombshell the name I can't remember. She was the classic MILF/cougar and picked up some young dude.

She was into kinky stuff and had him doing all sorts of strange things. She had very specific fantasies he had to act out. It culminated one night with a rape fantasy. She wanted him to break in her house, and she had him dress a certain way and had these little details he had to follow.

So he does it, breaks in and comes in the bedroom. He goes to play attack her. She pulls out a revolver and blows him away. He goes down with this look of puzzlement, "Why?....."

Then it cuts to a scene a little while later. Cops are there, and are taking the body away. Yep, that's him, the such-and-such rapist.

You see, the woman's son was the actual rapist, and she picked out this patsy to match his description and her "rape fantasy" was following the exact M.O. of her son's rapes.

She got junior off the hook.

You may want to search online for a beekeeper. We use hives on our ranch. When it's hot out they swarm. If someone or thing removed the hive, they will try to make a new one. They could be doing that.
We have to have the bee guy come and get the bees sometimes.
One time I think a queen landed on an employee. He had a swarm on his back for an hour. He just sat there with the safety guy talking to him to keep him calm. The bee guy came and got the bees away.

232 "Years ago some of the Russian titanium that was being sold had a little
problem with being radioactive. Allegedly it was coming from scrapped

The F-22 has titanium forgings in several key structural bulkheads. Sourced from Mother Russia. After the first eighty or so jets had been built, it was discovered (too late for an economical fix) that the forgings were not to spec and the airframe service lives would be shortened.

Blundering incompetence by Ivan, or clever industrial sabotage? The USA subtly stuck spanners in the works of Soviet industry during the Cold War, so they would be itching for some payback.

Of course, this is the sort of problem that occurs when a country decides that it doesn't need to have its very own heavy industrial base any longer and has to buy things like big forged parts from other countries which have, y'know, actual forges to do the job.

So the Cosmo bimbos actually think that the San Bernadino or Paris killer could have been talked out of shooting people?

I'm sure the victims of many a serial killer tried "working out their differences" ie, begging for their lives. By all accounts, pleading with a psychopath actually increases his pleasure - he's aroused by the power he has over others and is thrilled by their pain. Bundy would have been considerably less aroused if one of the women he tortured had been able to pull out a pistol and shoot him in the gut.

297 "The USA subtly stuck spanners in the works of Soviet industry during the Cold War"

Subtly?

"A CIA operation to sabotage Soviet industry by duping Moscow into stealing booby-trapped software was spectacularly successful when it triggered a huge explosion in a Siberian gas pipeline, it emerged yesterday.
Thomas Reed, a former US Air Force secretary who was in Ronald Reagan's National Security Council, discloses what he called just one example of the CIA's "cold-eyed economic warfare" against Moscow in a memoir to be published next month.
Leaked extracts in yesterday's Washington Post describe how the operation caused "the most monumental non-nuclear explosion and fire ever seen from space" in the summer of 1982."

...

"The breakthrough came when Vetrov told the CIA of a specific "shopping list" of software technology that Moscow was seeking to update its pipeline as it sought to export natural gas to Western Europe.
Washington was keen to block the deal and, after securing President Reagan's approval in January 1982, the CIA tricked the Soviet Union into acquiring software with built-in flaws.

"In order to disrupt the Soviet gas supply, its hard currency earnings from the West, and the internal Russian economy, the pipeline software that was to run the pumps, turbines and valves was programmed to go haywire after a decent interval, to reset pump speeds and valve settings to produce pressures far beyond those acceptable to pipeline joints and welds," Mr Reed writes.

The project exceeded the CIA's wildest dreams. There were no casualties in the explosion, but it was so dramatic that the first reports are said to have stirred alarm in Washington."

Background: I'm a conservative conservative. I worship at the altar of Ward Cleaver. And here's what pisses me off about libertarians... (Big "L," small "L," I don't give a shit. Don't bother telling me the difference.)

You can't tell me mass shootings are not on the rise ("Here! See? Look at this chart! Huh?! Huh?! What about that! No rise in mass shootings!") and then simultaneously tell me that we should arm teachers.

No one was talking about arming teachers in my school days. So why do you offer that now? You tell me nothing new is going on... and then weirdly offer a solution.

School shootings are clearly a new phenomenon. So either the culture had an impact (Oh, no! Libertarians keep telling me "It's just entertainment! It has no impact!") or it's THE FUCKING DRUGS!

I say we keep selling guns and ban psychotropic drugs.

Oh, and jail the fucking pharmaceutical execs and docs while we're at it.

I had a long discussion with an old friend about this recently.

She was of the opinion that

a) They desperately want respect, honor and love, and not being bounced off of door frames in arguments, but that is the sort of treatment they get used to;
b) guys who don't treat them like that seem boring after a while.

to which I add my personal experience:

c) getting into a screaming fight with someone you are intimate with is easier than working out a problem, a difference or disagreement about something, and allows you to claim all sorts of moral high-ground. The adrenaline high is an added bonus.

the really scary part is that Faceybook is part of the Catalyst database system.... ie they give information to a database that SELF DESRIBES as being for Progressive causes.

Ergo, everything you will now way on Hot Air, will be looked at by Facebook (legally), collated, and sent to a Progressive database that is used to target voters for micro advertising on specific issues.

Yet the supposed Conservatives who run the place, either don't know.... or don't care...

475 Ah, home at long last, where I can pour myself a beverage, kick off my shoes and other articles of attire, and lounge among the weirdest weirdos of the web for a few minutes before retiring.

Y'know, that grade school English schoolmarm who lives in my head just never lets go.

We went to the grocery store on our way home, of necessity (no bacon). At the self-help checkout lanes, I saw a whiteboard on which was written, "No coupon's at self-service lane. Sorry Mgmt." I blurted out to the checker (young fellow, not devoid of a sensahumor) that there were no coupons allowed because of sorry management. Hahaha. And remarked on the possessive form of coupon. "Just move that apostrophe down as a comma after "sorry," and it'll be all right.

Then Milady pointed out the headline on the Tulsa World. "Guns used in most domestic deaths." Um, really? I mean, murders, suicides, and self-defense deaths, yeah, I can see, but I don't think they really mean most domestic deaths.

Langwich. How do it werk?

So, gimme the 5¢ version of what's been said tonight so I don't have to read 500 comments!?

AoS hasn't even plumbed the real depths yet - obscene expressions in Russian is an entire sub-language.

There is a Russian joke with a foreman and worker arguing at a construction site - it is a comprehensible conversation of fourteen words, each of which is a different variant of a single well-known Russian obscenity.

482 I think the whole damned world banking system is Lehman Bros.

What was the latest from Euroland -- they're talking about forcing sovereign debt haircuits before any more bailouts from whatever alphabet soup stabilization funds they've pulled out of their asses over the years since '08.

There's mountains of debt built up in the system that can't possibly be paid back. Now, that debt is many people's assets (including pension funds and all that good stuff).

The game is trying to stave off the realization that all that "wealth" is just dog shit, which brings on the burning times.

Even if that's what he thinks, what a shabby way to treat your readership.

I read a bit of the "adios" thread over there. Surprised by how many people love and respect Jazz Shaw. I've read a bit of his stuff, but he didn't stand out to me. But he has apparently shown much more class over this move then either Ed or Allah."

For me, it's more of something that's been drilled into me from an early age. My family has been persecuted many times throughout history, and left several nations one step ahead of the authorities. There's several things you just shouldn't ever talk about in society, and politics is high among them, because having the wrong opinion can be remarkably fatal. There's a certain safety in anonymity, as long as you have it, you're another step ahead and have more time to get out while the getting is good.

There's also the insulating factor of it. If people know who the author is, they judge your words by who you are, and it becomes a popularity contest. With anonymity, your words speak for themselves without any credit or discredit from their author. The Left is all about making everything into one giant fucking popularity contest, and always has been.

From what I've heard the switch over was decided by Salem and made across the board on all of their web sites.

Posted by: Maetenloch at February 16, 2016 01:33 AM (wqVD1)

So to me that sounds like two options then. Ed is a little
corporate bitch that too beta to admit this is the case because he makes
no mention of it coming from Salem. OR Ed is a cowardly little bitch
and would rather blame Salem than own up to it being him and the others
of Hot Air that are doing it.

Posted by: buzzion at February 16, 2016 01:40 AM (zt+N6)

Ed and Allah are on W-2 gigs with Salem. Like every other W-2 gig, they need time to find another gig when their management goes rogue -- and unless the managerial crap gets really bad in a short amount of time, it's best to keep things on the down-low until one has a landing pad. I don't now if Ed and Allah were enthusiastically on board or completely opposed -- but I'd expect both to be quiet even if they were both going to bail. That Malkin stepped-in to call a curtain would seem to be a major indication of feelings at the Hotair level.

So when I acquired my first digital camera in 2003 and found myself at an anti-war rally attending in all sincerity as an anti-war leftist, out of longstanding habit, I was literally stunned to see grotesque anti-semitism on display, so photographed it, and (inspired by Allah's example) put it online.

Since that day I have seen the "Counterfeit Jews" dogma crop up more often than I'd like.

As I said in the caption to the photo,

"Notice the obscure reference to "Counterfeit Jews." This is apparently part of a little-known anti-Semitic conspiracy theory that Africans are the real Hebrews of the Bible, and that those people who now call themselves Jews are all phonies, having stolen the title of the "chosen people" from the Africans, who are the true chosen people."

I think it was probably popularized by early Nation of Islam "thinkers," or some similar politicized afro-revolutionary cult.

9/11 brought them all out of the woodwork, and they never crawled back in.

LOL! Man, that's just mean.

Posted by: RickZ at February 16, 2016 03:06 AM (Ix+HS)

619 Ay ay ay, this is gonna be awkward.

Last year, I ran into a former long-ago childhood friend. She was from a wealthy but extremely left-wing family at the time. Classic "limousine liberal" types -- except they weren't showoffs with their money. They were of the type who wanted to pretend to be radicals with street cred, even though they were the heirs to a longstanding "old money" family fortune.

So anyway, I asked how her mom was healthwise, and my friend reported that her (rich) mother had recently died. I expressed my condolences.

And then...

And then...

And then she uncorked a jaw-dropping progressive howler. Her exact words were,

"I can't believe the taxes on the inheritance!"

I was a bit taken aback by this statement (this family rarely discusses money, because they have a lot of "liberal shame" for not being working class). But I guess she saw the light after finally feeling the bite of the taxman. Maybe she was beginning to see the Tea Party perspective. So I chimed in something vague like, "Yeah, they're pretty bad..."

And then the zinger! Her reply?

"I mean, we hardly had to pay any inheritance tax at all, because the assets were in the family trust! It's just not fair -- they should close this loophole so there can be a punitive inheritance tax!"

Truly mind-boggling. Something only the most hypocritical limousine liberal could say.

Somehow, I had the presence of mind to blurt out, "Well, you can always pay more if you want."

She looked at me quizzically, silently asking for further clarification. So I followed up, "You don't need to limit your tax payments to the amount calculated. That's just a minimum. You can donate as much as you want to the IRS. They even have a form for voluntary extra payments."

For the first time ever in our long long relationship, I saw anger flare in her eyes. "No, that's not the point," she said. "Taxes should be raised for everyone."

The conversation came to a quick and abrupt end, as we mutually decided it was best to just stop talking. We said our goodbyes and parted.

I haven't seen or spoke to her since that day.

The awkward part? I've just been invited to an important birthday party of a mutual friend, and my hypocritical limousine liberal friend will definitely be there. And I can't say no, really.

Tense, awkward silences await. Ugh.

Posted by: zombie at February 16, 2016 03:12 AM (jBuUi)

621 619
It is a weird cognitive dissonance, yes. But notice how it is always other people they talk about taxing, never themselves.

I am sure if you pinned her down, she would say that they did not really have that much money and that it was ok for them to use the system to pay as little as possible. In her mind however, there are a vast number of far more wealthy people who should be forced to pay.

One of my favorite comments from here, which I've since shamelessly stolen, is (and I paraphrase to the best of my faulty memory): 'I came into this world screaming and covered in blood. If necessary, I'll go out that way, too.'

So yeah, 'wretched hive of scum and villainy' it is. And no union dues required.

When I was 5 or 6, my sister (9 years older) had a friend who's dad was a Navy captain, living in base housing (MOQ). She was forced to take me with her one time. They had white furniture on the patio. I promptly proceeded to jump all across that furniture, leaving many footprints. My sister and her friend were appalled, as well as scared what the captain would say when he came home. When he saw what I had done, all he said was, 'Boys will be boys!'

657 It's too warm for all this snow. Here in WNY, that means HEAVY (as in, weight-wise) lake effect snow, and the visibility is bad already.

We have a severe winter storm warning on till 7 pm tonight, and I have quite the long commute.

Today is supposed to be an office day but I'm thinking I'll ask da boss if I can work from home today.

Don't think I'll be the only one, and I haven't played the weather card yet this winter.

Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at February 16, 2016 05:30 AM (HMt16)

658 I think the storm is pretty much over for us. Durham got a light coating of ice, where I live about 45 minutes north of here we got about a half inch of snow covered with a light coating of ice. It has warmed steadily through the night (it was 15 degrees colder when I came in to work at 6:30 PM than it is right now) so the ice is pretty much gone, all that is left is sporadic rain.

662 The quote of the Day I has an incorrect fact. Failure to pay your taxes when due is never a criminal offense. The IRS can never put in your jail for failure to pay.

Crimes that the IRS can put in you in jail for are things like willful failure to file and fraudulent filing of tax returns

Our firm has a client that has has not paid income tax for well over 20 years. He timely files his tax return every year. The IRS has essentially permanent liens against him, but he basically lives on cash and rents everything (owns nothing). The IRS has never sought criminal charges against him because it can't. Since he timely files every year, the worst they can do is try to collect through liens and garnishments. If you live via cash existence though, they cannot do much of anything.

Not in anyway suggesting others emulate this behaviour, just trying to dispel incorrect facts .

Regards

Looks like a thin red snake of heavy stuff running N/S centered on Fayett-nam, the north end of the snake is just getting to Durham. Should be gone by the time I head home...I hope. Charlotte looks to be getting out of the weather pretty soon, the way it's moving shouldn't take long to go all the way north and east. I pity the upper North East in a few hours though.
