Overnight Open Thread (13 Feb 2016)

What do you see in the image above? Anything? OK, now shake your head and what do you see?

Time Will Tell

McConnell: No vote on Scalia replacement under Obama. We'll see. I don't have a lot of faith in GOP leadership based on their history of folding like cheap suits with this administration. Hopefully they understand that this is the hill to die on. Of course, here's the talk of government shutdown.

if McConnell declines to put Obama's nomination on the floor for a vote, it likely would create gridlock for the remainder of the legislative year because angry Democrats would block the passage of other bills.

"Democrats will most likely try to shut everything down in protest," Bonjean said.

Democratic filibusters would interfere with McConnell's goal of passing bipartisan bills that demonstrate to voters that a GOP majority in Congress can get things done.

Is it wrong that I'm fine with that? I'm tired of a GOP congress passing stuff just to say that got things done. All they've done is pass Obama's stuff for peanuts in return.

Titanic II

Maiden voyage of Titanic II pushed back to 2018, ship won't cross the Atlantic after all. I guess the route from Jiangsu, China to Dubai will address the problem of running into an iceberg.

Education Today

Wow. 71% of Americans are fairly certain that Alexander Hamilton is among our nation's past presidents.

The study identified three other prominent figures from American history that more than a quarter of those surveyed incorrectly recognize as past presidents, including Franklin, Hubert Humphrey and John Calhoun.

Perhaps more striking, nearly a third of those surveyed falsely recognized the common name "Thomas Moore" as someone who was once an American president.

Armed & Dangerous Crab

Space Exploration

Here's what we'll do in space by 2116.

Knife Crime

Looks like knife attacks are on the rise in NYC.

Year-to-date, there have been 471 stabbings and slashings through last Sunday - compared to 395 last year for the same time period, police said.

Meanwhile, there is 'deafening silence' from Democrats on recent police officer deaths.

So far in 2016, eight officers have been shot to death, with most of those deaths occurring in the past week, way up from this time last year.

Government Work

Surely, we've got someone on the books in one of our bloated government agencies that has this feat beat. Spanish civil servant off work unnoticed for six years.

A Spanish civil servant who failed to turn up for work for "at least" six years has been caught after becoming eligible for a long service award.
Joaquin Garcia, 69, was fined 27,000 (21,000; $30,000) after the award brought his long absence to light.

Air Power

Russia hit 1,888 targets in Syria in a week; US count? Just 16.

Tetrahedron Superyacht

This could be the new toy for billionaires. I just like the name.

1 Hah!

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at February 13, 2016 10:08 PM (Zu3d9)

2 Jesus instructed his followers to love one another. To love my neighbor as myself. And I do. I love humankind and pray continually for our spiritual salvation and uplifting. I love humanity in all its glorious struggling and achieving and failing.

The Public, however, is an entirely different matter. I've known that the Public were unpleasant, filthy, and disgusting, since 'way back in high school, when I worked cleaning up after them in a public park, and in the teen night club I helped found and run when I was (duh) a teen. The Public means filthy urinals, cigaret butts, and used condoms - often in the urinals. The Public is ill-mannered, smelly, and diseased.

I've always known this, but my tolerance for enduring the Public over the decades has been increasingly abraided, especially as my awareness has increased regarding what dealings with the Public portends.

Which is why I don't go out much, if I can help it.

As it happens, lately, we've had an epidemic of appliance failures. The vacuum cleaner is in the shop; the dishwasher has been down for a while; we've been avoiding getting the dryer repaired by hanging stuff to dry; but then, two days ago, right in the middle of a load, the washing machine stopped working.

Thus, we were thrust into one of the more repulsive Public venues, the laundromat. On Saturday evening.

Now, the laundromat was clean. The washers and dryers were in good shape and not reeking of other people's cleaning materials. And we went at dinnertime, when the patrons were few and many machines were available, so we could get in and out as quickly as possible.

We started the laundry, I read a chapter in my book, Milady read something on her cell. We switched to the dryers. We re-stationed ourselves by a couple of folding tables near the dryer as I read some more.

As Milady got up to pull out some dry clothes, that's when That Guy came over, took the chair where she'd been sitting, and threw his big tub on the folding table, even though he never did any folding!

"Where'd you get your hat?" he asked me. "It was a gift!" I replied, hoping my irritation wasn't too obvious. Some discussion followed of how he wanted a hat, Milady suggesting places to buy one, and him replying about his impoverished state and other drivel.

Despite my terrible Opinionated Tourette's Syndrome, I said nothing more. Fortunately, it's the age of the Internet, so I have other venues in which to vent, and did not verbally assault the fellow then and there, but it was a terrible struggle. Bit my tongue until it bled.

Soon enough, he threw his dry clothes into his big tub, bade us goodbye, and dragged his fat ass and his tub of wrinkly clothes out of there.

So I didn't say...

"Hey, fellah! I can see that you're morbidly, even obscenely obese, that you could make three or four of me out of you. That's okay, I'm sure it's because you're somehow 'handicapped' - I am too, just in ways that aren't as obvious.

"I can tell by looking at you and listening to you that your problems are mental as well as physical, but you're plainly functional enough to do your own laundry and hold a marginally intelligent conversation.

"So, what I want to ask you is, Did you have a mother? And if you did have a mother, did she ever tell you to cover when you cough and sneeze? Because, you're sitting here in public coughing up a lung and sneezing your filthy sputum into the air that everybody else has to breathe!

"Did you ever hear of a handkerchief?? Do you want to give everybody else your cold or tuberculosis or whatever the hell you've got?"

Now I feel like I'm coming down with something. I need to drink some orange juice - with a strong, double-shot of medicinal purpose.

I love humanity; I can't stand the Public.

253 Regarding Hugh Jackman/Prestige sidebar question:

Because the clone, having the memory of the original right up until the switch was pressed, feels 100% as if he has survived the trip. It is an illusionary perception which he will discover when he enters the box, but except for the first original that stepped into the box, every clone feels as if his conscience has been transferred and that he has survived intact. They all find out otherwise of course. So I get why all the clones would step into the box, armed with this misconception, but there's no way the first Jackman gets in the box. It's utter suicide without even the illusion of survival.

Posted by: qdpsteve at February 13, 2016 11:16 PM (ntObR)

Doesn't matter what those in "normal" America believe, it's now what the SJW's want, and the SJW's dislike Jackson because of the "Trail of Tears" and Jefferson for not freeing the slaves in the Constitution and banging his father's slaves even though it's pretty much well known that his brother was the one banging all the female slaves.

The SJW's don't really care that Tubman was a Republican, but they will have a problem with it as it gets closer. At that point they will want to put Mooch on it.

I am conflicted. I want to be optimistic and believe Cruz will win and actually push to enact policy that will right this craptastic mess a country. However, like the audience tonight, the deck is pretty stacked against any small government, pro-America candidate.

At the end of the day, I know no single man can save this country. Even Ted Cruz. My two cents.

354 They still race Unlimited Hydrofoils, but the thrill, alas, she is gone.

You see, all of those lovely Merlins, Packard and Allison engines have been retired, mostly due to a paucity of parts.

So instead, they run Allison or Pratt & Whitney turbines, such as would power various mid size helicopters.

They're faster, the boats have enclosed cockpits with "safety capsule" technology, and the boats are far stronger, being made of carbon fiber & fiberglass, rather than the birch n' balsa of yore.

Sadly, they're quieter... far, far quieter.

Gone is the thunder of a half-dozen boats pulling well over the ton, each powered by 12 cylinders of roaring, fire-breathing thunder.

When I lived in San Diego, you could easily hear the boats racing in Mission Bay, a good fifteen miles and two or three major canyons from Kearny Mesa.

The turbine boats? Lucky to hear 'em over the Muzak in the nearby Walgreens.

And that's why they're not on the teevee no mo'.

You can't see the drivers...the boats are "pods". And there is no Thunder to stir the soul.

Yeah, they still race, the purses are still huge, and the boat babes are still hot.

But the boats and the races just aren't all that telegenic, now.

And that is our loss.

They ended up at a local watering hole, and I went there after sunset to have a beer and get a bite to eat. Bunch of hot rods, classics, and bikes in the parking lot. After I ate, and finished my beer, I wandered the lot. And saw a really nice "survivor" '29 Franklin sedan. Huge 4-door, 6 cylinder air-cooled engine. Side-mounts, and white wall tires. Car is for sale, but I didn't ask the price, because I know it's beyond my means. Had a nice chat with the owner. Never brought a camera, because I wasn't expecting a car show. "Angier said "I never knew if I'd be the one in the box, or the one on the balcony", probably creating intentional ambiguity over which one was the clone and which one was the original, or if the notion of clone/original was even relevant.
He killed himself with the waterbox because it was how his wife died, and because Cutter originally described drowning as "going home". Cutter later reveals that drowning is actually agony, which references back to what the other guy said in regards to wanting to be fooled, that we don't want to know he was horribly killing himself every night simply to get one good act of revenge. Hell, it also shows that Angier probably didn't want to know that drowning was agony, and he would have loved to have been fooled into believing his clones were feeling like they were finally going home after a lifetime of pain."

390 Just got home from a very pleasant early Valentine's Day with the wife; she got the expected choccies and roses and I got a shared day at the range.

Found out I am very out of practice with a rifle. Gotta fix that. Also found out the muthahumpin' Commies REALLY want those green sealed cans to stay sealed...

Good day with the pistols though, practicing for the CCW test, easily managed to pass the shooting section, with S/W MP40C, Cattleman .44 and Tok.

Got a lot of exercise at the 100 yard zero range since no spotter scope or binocs and the cheap Chinese scope my dealer threw in is only a 4X so three shot group, walk downrange, curse at group, walk back, three shot group, walk downrange, curse at group, walk back, three shot group, walk downrange, curse at group, walk back...

Any of you Mosin shooters, do you use the Timney or any other aftermarket trigger?

431 @ 390, Richard McEnroe...

I've got a Polish made Mosin M-44, manufactured in 1952.

The bluing on it rivals or exceeds most of the nicer grade commercial rifles available for sale on the modern market.

The fit and finish, of every part and in every respect, is worthy of a bespoke rifle.

When I got it, there were still feathery grains of wood, which could be felt with the fingers and observed through an 8x loupe, in the stamped cartouches on the stock.

The rifle had been built, proof-fired, and put in storage, but without being slathered in cosmoline. The bore is a bright, shiny, mirror finished work of art.

It was unfired when I bought it about ten years ago.

Shoots 2 in. or smaller groups with Winchester White Box (Metric) ammo.

Don't know how they did it, but the trigger is as good as any match rifle I've ever fired.

Absolutely belies the whole "cheap Mosin" trope. This thing is a trophy, and a gem.

Hope you can find one like it!

What was arguably even worse than the Lefties cheerleading over Scalia's death is that Clarence Thomas was trending on Twitter for a few hours after the news broke. I initially thought something had happened to him too, but thankfully Thomas was fine and the trending was due to lib-tards making all kinds of nasty comments about him and wanting Thomas to join Scalia in death. Oh, and apparently Thomas did nothing on his own, all he did was mimic Scalia.

When he was using the drunk guy as his double he was jealous he (who did the hard work) had to hide under the stage.

Even if he created a perfect clone, he'd be back in that position again. Actually, that might even create a problem of two Angiers vying for the spotlight if their personalities were exact as well.

So, was creating and killing clones a perfect solution? Maybe not. But the guy wasn't right in the head after losing his wife. I mean, come on, he had Scarlett Johansson and wrecked that too. Clearly not sane.

I remember a story the Dallas ABC new affiliate did on Collins going down to San Antonio to return some sort of Alamo or Davey Crockett artifact I can't remember exactly, but the crux of the story was that Collins was a big fan of that time period and seemed to be fond of the whole Alamo story. Thought it was interesting.

547 I thought the Prestige was a good movie. Nolan really knows how to present a story through the medium of film. It doesn't feel forced and he doesn't dumb it down. The thing that spoiiled it for me was that I watched it with an uber lib friend of mine. He kept telling me how smart and intelligent of a movie it was.

The guy had a twin. Wow, smart...

Posted by: Jean at February 14, 2016 12:53 AM (cXiMR)

624 Ricardo Kill,

Back in the Carter era, when I was a USAF cop, all of our 5.56 came in a 20 rd. cardboard box, in a pair of ten-round stripper clips.

We were issued the adapter to fit over the top of the 20 rd. mags we were then issued, (didn't get 30 rounders 'till 197, and loaded our mags in two, ten round pushes.

During my whole (1 hitch) enlistment, I never saw the 5.56 packaged in any other manner.

In that I was on the base Rifle & Pistol team, and qualified as "alternate" for the Air Training Command team, you might guess that I burned through more than the average number of rounds that the normal USAF puke would see in an entire career. And all the 5.56 was all on stripper clips.

Our practice .38 spl. was Winchester 148 gr. full wadcutters, pure lead, in 50 rd. commercial packaging.

Issue "duty" .38 spl, was some odd FMJ of about 148 gr., if I recall correctly? And it was crap, Bounce off a windshield, fail to penetrate a car door, crap. They finally issued a higher pressure version of the same round, about 150 fps faster, I think. A bit more bark when fired, but still, pretty weak tea by today's standards.

The duty ammo came in 50 rd., small cardboard boxes, with rounds nestled in alternating "bullet up, bullet down" orientation, much like old 50 rd. boxes of .22 LR. Those had the Olin name on the box.

Of course, I was fully outprocessed before the advent of the M-9 Beretta and it's 9mm fodder, so I can't speak to that ammo's presentation.

But yeah, 5.56 on stripper clips. Was a thing.

628 @517 Does that also work if inebriated? I'm asking for a friend...

Harder to say because there could be a physio component at that point. You could try it, though. This cure is infallible to those I have watched try it - and certainly to me as I get rid of them after one or two hiccups now - every time.

It requires some faith at that moment, but telling yourself you HAD them over and over again gets you most of the way to "faith", even if you think it's stupid at first. Thinking you "have" them is fuel for them. It's very weird. And also hilarious because I love watching the mind at work.

It certainly doesn't make you feel dumber than all the other quack distraction cures. And takes far less physical effort, which I know the rons and ettes are all about.

659 Only place I've seen the 5.56 on stripper clips, was gen-ewe-wine USAF issued Olin ammo, back in 1975-1979.

Came in standard O.D. green 5.56 ammo cans, in cotton bandoleers with each pouch holding a 20 rd. box.

But I've not seen similar packaging in .mil surp ammo, since then.

Sure made loading mags a cinch, too. Frankly, I'd prefer those stripper clips and adapter over any number of Lula type gadgets, and that's fully admitting how damn good the Lula products are.

Some times, the old and simple, the tried and true....they worked for a century or so, for a damn good reason.

711 Today I have been finding paper hearts all over the house. I love this woman, she is such a romantic...and much to my surprise, I find that I am as well.

Tomorrow I work, unfortunately, and also unfortunately the morrow is supposed to bring some weather and the Subaru has taken a huge dump (head gaskets if I'm lucky, timing belt if I'm not) so I get to take the horribly overpowered and RWD Mustang to work in it...unless milady is off work Monday due to weather and then I can take her FWD car in instead.

So how has everyone elses weekend gone?

She replied (paraphrasing) this is what I love about the commenters on Ace. Light bulb explodes over someone's head and what do they do? Clean it up? No, they comment about it!

Well, let's see how this day went:

Got up, bright and sunny, started the day right with the morning thread.

Felt the 5.1 Oklahoma earthquake many miles away.

Milady and I had a good lunch of eggs, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and peas.

Pet thread somewhere in there. Bragged about doggie.

Went to town. Read that Scalia died, headed right to AoS, which was on it of course.

Had to quit that to go do laundry (see comment #2).

Milady made great from-scratch pizza. Daughter dropped by, watched some videos, including Mark Dice on Scalia death conspiracy theories (sigh!).

Headed home, had a drink, plowed through ONT comments, and now...

I'm ready to rest up to face another amazing day.

Life is what it is. Take it easy.

Good night, whoever's still hanging around.

And that is the purest love of all, I think. It's right there, ready and waiting, and you both leave it be.

That's strength and character, that's will-power, that's a willingness to leave things as they are, and unspoken.

You're a good man with a strong constitution.

No, I'm a degenerate lech, but even I know the difference between right and wrong.

Yeah, some of us have gathered the degenerate lech thing, and have you ranged and sighted....but won't pull the trigger under current RoE. Because there's not a man alive who hasn't had a moment of lechery.

786 More bad news about the Ted Cruz ads. Now I see a couch I recognize.

789 Just finished "Fire and Frost" by our very own Allen G (who may or may not have a blog). Good book, highly recommended. I'll put this up on the book thread if I'm still awake by then.

790 re: The Prestige in the sidebar, a couple of the comments already covered some of the reasoning quite well. He had bad experiences using the double: taking bows under the stage and being constantly worried the double would be revealed. His ego probably couldn't allow another of him to exist. He was even okay with the method because he was under the mistaken impression from Cutter trying to console him that drowning was painless.

He also needed to prove he was better than Alfred. His understanding of Alfred's trick was that there was no double. Wanting to prove himself the better magician, his trick couldn't use a double and end up being inferior. His plot for revenge also involved framing Alfred at an opportune time so that also required the deaths (we know it was premeditated because he purposely decided to not reveal himself at the end).

793 I know of a woman at EPA who has not been seen since 2010. She was fired in 2010 and, though reinstated a couple years later by court order, has never been back to the office. This is costing you, the taxpayer, over $100,000 per year (plus benefits). Of course, she is a "whistleblower"(but in fact, she is literally a crazy cat woman).

794 I fail to see how anything in the study of Americans' recollection of presidents' names could be called "surprising". Most of all that an extra "O" in Thomas More makes the patron saint of lawyers, politicians, and statesmen unrecognizable as a person important in political history. We are talking here about people who cant spel 4 there lif and who think anybody on a U.S. bill, coin, or stamp must have been president.
