Quote of the Day I - And That Goes a Long Way Edition

One thing: I don't really believe that Donald Trump is a small-government sort or really pro-life or particularly pro-gun or hesitant to get involved in blatant social engineering. But I do think that the man genuinely loves the United States of America. And that he would not hesitate to [expletive deleted] up the [expletive deleted] of anybody who [expletive deleted] with us.

Quote of the Day II

My problem with Sanders is that he's ultimately a coward. He talks a great game about being dedicated to a "political revolution," but he is utterly unwilling to employ the means required to achieve the ends desired.

...Bernie Sanders has to believe Hillary Clinton is part of the problem. But he won't say so, save to prattle on about Clinton's super PACs and speaking fees. That's amateur-hour stuff. It's academic-seminar-level griping, not revolution-fomenting. He wants to talk about the system, but he won't do what is minimally required to change it. And right now, the first step on that long road is steamrolling Hillary Clinton. It's like saying you want to do whatever it takes to fight malaria, but refusing to say much about the huge, sprawling, and fetid marshlands in the middle of downtown. The Clintons are swamp creatures, taking what they need and leaving in their retromingent wake the stench of corruption.

North Korea Successfully Launches Rocket, Orbits Satellite

And they is learning:

North Korea has successfully placed its second satellite into a polar orbit using their newer version of the UnHa-3 rocket to launch what they are calling the KwangMyungSong-4 satellite. The satellite and its third-stage rocket booster are both being tracked by NORAD which is showing a near prefect circular and polar orbit.

Since the first North Korean satellite launched in December 2012 tumbled uncontrollably, our collective think-tanks' analysis had always been that North Korea was never able to communicate with that satellite. Yet it is humbly apparent that they did in fact learn from its failures. This second satellite is, for now, orbiting over the poles about every 94 minutes with its third stage booster somewhere near it.

Here is a previous launch of their UnHa-3 rocket:

Frankly, if the Admiral remembers the 1980s, higher professionalism from the Russian Navy (than its Soviet predecessor) is probably a good thing for everyone, and it should simply inspire NATO navies to pursue professionalism also. Instead, however, we've been pursuing race and sex quotas with a single-mindedness that would get fiction's greatest whaling captain to tell us to "lighten up, shipmate."

...The great-grandsons of those iron men in iron boats now put to sea backed by a nation that may have its own issues, but is free of the technical isolation that led Soviet-era submarine technology to lag the West. Of course they've gotten better; that's what humans do, given half a chance. The cause of Admiral Johnstone's problem is not that the Russians have use the last two decades to get better, but that his nations' navies have not.

What were we doing? Figuring out how long a plug had to go into new sub designs, so that we could have ladies' sanitary arrangements, because our lodestar was not the mission but the careers.

Supreme Court Likely To Hear New "Assault Weapons" Ban Case

In a 2-1 decision applauded by gun rights advocates, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit concluded that the semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity magazines banned by Maryland's Firearm Safety Act "are in common use by law-abiding citizens." As a result, they don't fall under the exception to the right to bear arms that applies to "unusual" weapons such as machine guns and hand grenades, the court said.

The significance of this decision is that it's in conflict with the decision of another appeals court and furthermore for the first time a court applied the 'strict scrutiny' standard - the highest possible threshold for the government to meet - to an assault weapons ban law. Gabe Malor explains the importance of this here.

I spoke with Sevag Yemenyjan outside of a Swedish language classroom. He fled Syria and left everything and everyone behind. I asked how he chose Sweden.

"Someone told me Sweden is good. They help for school, and help two years," said Yemenyjan in somewhat stilted English.

Two years refers to the time period for cash assistance to asylees. During that time, Yemenyjan will receive close to $54,000 to support himself, his wife, and two daughters. By comparison, if he and his family went to the US as refugees, they'd get a one-time payment of about $4,000. (There are other forms of non-cash assistance in both countries as well.)

...Roughly 163,000 migrants applied for asylum in Sweden last year, the highest per capita rate in Europe; not surprising as the country has among the most generous social benefits in the world.

Meet Lilli, the High-end German Gold-Digger/Call Girl who became America's Iconic Barbie Doll

And not a toy for little girls either.

Unbeknownst to most, Barbie actually started out life in the late 1940s as a German cartoon character created by artist Reinhard Beuthien for the Hamburg-based tabloid, Bild-Zeitung. The comic strip character was known as "Bild Lilli", a post-war gold-digging buxom broad who got by in life seducing wealthy male suitors.

...She became so popular that in 1953, the newspaper decided to market a three-dimensional which was sold as an adult novelty, available to buy from bars, tobacco kiosks and adult toy stores. They were often given out as bachelor party gag gifts and dangled from a car's rearview mirror.
In the 1950s, one of the founders of Mattel, Ruth Handler (pictured above), was travelling to Europe and bought a few Lilli dolls to take home. She re-worked the design of the doll and later debuted Barbie at the New York toy fair on March 9, 1959.

Mattel acquired the rights to Bild Lilli in 1964, and production of the German doll ceased. (Funny how Barbie's lighter skin tone was just about the only noticeable change in the early days).

44 Hey everybody.

Just finished reading a relatively short book written by actor/comedian Brad Garrett about facing middle age, titled "When The Balls Drop."

He has some funny stories in there. One is about a fellow comedian who had a rep for being a real ladies' man (as well as a drunk).

Supposedly this fellow comedian went home with a groupie after the show, and said groupie didn't just want to get it on... she wanted to be tied to the bed first. So this guy ties her up, and then she says "hey I just remembered something I left in your car, could you be a sweetheart and go get it?"

So this guy leaves, stinking drunk, goes to his car and retrieves whatever it was. But... he realized it was a HUGE apartment complex, and he couldn't remember which apartment she was in. Oh, and it was about 2 am by this point.

So he just went ahead and went home, leaving her tied up. Garrett says he later found out she was reported missing a few days later; finally she was found in her apartment, still tied up. Oh boy.

I've long entertained the notion that Trump might just be selling a product when it came to his political views (and whether or not he'll continue supporting that product after it's sold is another argument), but his love of America is evident and beyond any accusation of fakery. In short, we could do a lot worse, and we have - many times.

73 Hmmm, if you're a consistent sitzpinkler, doesn't that make you a retromingent? And while pissing into a strong wind, we all are.

A hormonal change occurs and the male thinks only about mating and breeding. This is called the rut, similar to behavior of male elk, the male camel becomes much more aggressive at this time. The unique thing about the male camel anatomy is that his penis sheath points to the rear, not to the front, which allows him to be able to easily urinate onto his tail. During breeding the male camel's genitals point to the rear, but arch around to reach the female in a forward direction.

Female camels dig a guy that pees well onto his tail. And to top it off, he must have a double jointed dick.

Trump is not so much a conservative or a liberal....he's a pragmatist.

People ascribe all sorts of "liberal- democrat" views to him, based on a lot of statements in the past. That's the social ocean he has to swim in to make a buck....New York City.

He'll do whatever is practical and "what works". He knows in his bones that what BHO has been doing is a vast failure theater, regardless of what the Media apologizes and lies about.

I think he would do a lot of good, maybe, but he is a wild card. He would also do stuff that most of us might be appalled by, in the name of "pragmatism" and "what works". Because I don't think he has any lasting permanent values, only pragmatic deal making.

121 Time for me to go to bed too. Real tired. Spent the day doing house renovations. Peeling up old linoleum in my kitchen-to-be. Started using a shovel, then graduated to a hammer and 1" wood chise. Linoleum glued to plywood subfloor, then peel-and-stick tiles on top of that. Plus a bunch of nails and staples that held the carpet down on top of both those. Had to make a run to Home Depot for some lumber and cement, because the block guy was grouting blocks, and ran short of grout. So I got a scraper blade for my reciprocating saw, and that works like magic to peel the old lino up. Takes several passes to get the old backing paper up, but aside from a tendency to kick back viciously when the blade hits a nail, or gouges into the subfloor, it's damned near effortless.

Except this is in a mobile home that comprises the middle third of the house. The wall framing sits on top of the subfloor. Fortunately, there's only one soft spot in the subfloor, and that area is going to get cupboards/countertop over it, so an inset patch panel will work fine; nobody will ever walk on it.

I wanted to shit-can the trailer entirely, and simply pour a slab, and develop the space as normal framed rooms. Already slabs on each side with large cement-block rooms. But city wouldn't go for it.

Posted by: Jean at February 08, 2016 12:22 AM (cXiMR)

Except this is in a mobile home that comprises the middle third of the house. The wall framing sits on top of the subfloor. Fortunately, there's only one soft spot in the subfloor, and that area is going to get cupboards/countertop over it, so an inset patch panel will work fine; nobody will ever walk on it.

I wanted to shit-can the trailer entirely, and simply pour a slab, and develop the space as normal framed rooms. Already slabs on each side with large cement-block rooms. But city wouldn't go for it.

Reminds me of the conversation I had with the then-future-ex wife about a house we bought and were remodeling/rebuilding. Place was a dump....

I got bids and proposals from three contractors - none were very encouraging.

She asked if we had any other options.

If the people interviewing Newton were any worse, I wouldn't blame him for rolling his eyes and leaving. Those live sports interviews have got to be the worst "reporting" on the air.

I have tried using heat guns for this sort of thing before. Problem is, it's slow. Takes quite a while for the heat to penetrate the thickness of the lino, and go to work on the glue.

The recip saw with scraper blade in it really works awesome. I don't mind if I don't get every scrap of backing paper off the subfloor. That's what the resilient underlayment used with laminate floors is for.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 08, 2016 12:40 AM (Z8fuk)

167 AOP. If you ever do have to replace that subfloor, you can buy or rent a "toe-kick" saw, that'll cut the existing subfloor to within 1/4" or less, to the existing plate.

I used one here after Ike, then went under the house and screwed-glued-in 1"x8"s all along the underside of the cut, so the new subfloor would have solid material to land on.

Of course, I cross-braced all those with additional joists, sistered onto the existing, or perpendicular to them with galvanized joist hangers.

Oh, and I doubled the thickness of the subfloors, too, but that'd be unnecessarily complex to describe here.

Point is, don't sweat the plate-over-subfloor issue, in the future. It's rather easily dealt with.

And enjoy your painkillers. After rebuilding this whole house after Hurricane Ike, and subsequent OJT injury last year, I'm right there with you in the aches n' pains department.

Thanks for the tips, Jim. I really see no need to replace any of the subfloor, aside from about 3 square feet where the old kitchen sink was, and which will be under a cabinet in my new layout, and therefore not really load-bearing. 178 Palpatine...... bomb, yes.

Down here, one mile from the Gulf of Mexico, we call those bombs "hurricanes", and find it wise to build in as near-bombproof manner as possible.

My front and back door frames are set into the house framing by eight screws per side, each screw being 1/4"x6", and set into a series of four 2"x4"s, set together on each side of the door opening, and 2"x12" lentils atop the framing posts. There are three of those screws in the header.

Plus, my strike plates and door hardware are both backed up by stainless and brass anti-theft plates, respectively, which also strengthen the door system to a rating of 200 mph direct winds.

My windows are rated against direct hits from a 2"x4" at 80 mph.

From Hurricane Ike this house suffered ZERO wind damage. Only rising water got 3" into the house, and the floor is 4'9" above ground level, which itself is 5 ft above sea level.

Not much I could do about the water, but the wind effects can be mitigated.

The house I grew up in was the old family farmhouse. Built from fieldstone - walls were probably at least two or three feet thick. Full basement, lined in brick, of all things.

Tin roof.

Built to take the abuse of mountain winters.

Overbuilt is generally the way to go for things that don't move or aren't meant to.

Thanks. And, thanks again. That is good stuff. Molido is up next for a trial run. Maybe some chicken?.

For someone who never was a really big fan of regular ole chilli powder, that pasilla is good stuff.
Posted by: Chi at February 08, 2016 01:18 AM (OUpHg)

Molido is an adjective, "ground", not a type of chili. The stuff I sent (IIRC), sorted by bite, would probably be pasilla, california, new mexico, hot new mexico, cayenne, chipotle. Pasilla is a "gateway chili" into mixing your own blends....because it opens doors that generic "chili powder" ignores.

Remember also that each type "blooms" differently in vinegar, alcohol, EVOO, meat fat, and water. You can mix pasilla in EVOO and paint onto a pork chop, and dust a pork chop in pasilla, and grill them both -- and have subtly different flavors (both likely to be delicious). You can marinade in one chili blend, grill with another, and use a third for a sauce.

Ah, but 50 years from now, if they're still in the original undamaged box, they'll be worth a fortune, just like GI Joe Nurse is worth serious coin now. What self-respecting boy back then wanted a G.I. Joe Nurse action figure? (Hell, I didn't know back then what kind of action a nurse could give anyway!) I know I didn't, but I had the real G.I. Joe action figure, with lots of accessories. I played with it to dismemberment.

So invest in the great grandkiddies college fund. Buy the frickin' dolls. Just don't let anyone play with them -- or use them for target practice.

Banzai, a) Hi! b) those apple slices were a favorite of mine. Always good, crispy & flavorful. Never d I asappointed. Did they stop offering them in lieu of fries? (I wouldn't know) that would be sad.

Rick, I never had a GI Joe doll, but did have a Mr. Hugo. A puppet type ventriloquist type thing that you put various moustaches, eyebrows, etc on. Very strange toy for a kid.
And my all-time favorite was Evel Knievel on the stunt bike. After I killed 2 or 3, Mom refused to buy me any more, so I played Oscar Madison, and Frankensteined them together with super glue to make my own six million dollar stuntman. I still sent him racing under passing cars and sometimes caught him on fire before a jump...

Cooth,
A few weeks back, I tried making my my own smoked salt, but it was just too damp & nasty out to keep a fire lit.
I'm going to try again with a tray of salt and a tray of paprika - maybe even tomorrow if it isn't too cold & windy.

What makes these times so interesting is that for the first time in history, billion dollar businesses controlled by leftards think they can alter reality by foisting retarded crap on the proletariat. This of course includes movies, commercials, halftime shows and "news" in addition to dolls.

But we still have freedom with regards to consumption. That's where the drama and suspense come in. Will the proles keep consuming, or will they put these people out of business?

Posted by: angela urkel at February 08, 2016 03:43 AM (ML24Y)

These companies make so much money that they can afford to destroy things like Barbie dolls. There will still be a decent number of purchases of these demented dolls by idiot parents (only to be thrown out by the kids, which probably excites Mattel to no end) and the company makes enough money in other areas to suffer some losses on this and have management still retain control (especially thanks to anti-business corporate law and poison pills and golden shower parachutes - just in case).

This sort of awful management can go on for a very long time, just as the abuse of the Fed can continue on much longer. Basically, you could put a five year old in charge of GE and the company would still be making decent money for a few years, all on its own inertia and lower management ... and then idiots would point to that to cheer about how great a manager the five year old is.

This stuff will only stop when society finally puts its foot down. That would be either when we get our needed national divorce or when the bulk of the population really loses patience with the left and forces them all back under the rocks they crawled out from. I'm not holding my breath for that, though. This society is more likely to ride this straight through the gates of hell ... as we saw spectacularly with the election of Barky (and then with the absolutely insane re-election of the America-hating retard).

It ain't pretty.

I have eggs, and bread... and some mayo. So. Making a few simple substitutes, I can scramble a couple of eggs, mix in some mayo, toast some bread, butter lightly, and voila! breakfast. easy.

You guys don't know what's good. I microwave most everything and it tastes great. And microwave breakfast sandwiches are awesome.

BTW Rick, McD's microwaves all their stuff, as I assume you're aware of. I could never figure out why they didn't sell their food in supermarkets so that people could microwave it at home - as they do. I would have thought they'd make a killing with that.

I'm talking about buying just the sausage patties. They stay flat and have the grease pretty much cooked out of them.

Now I have a White Castle near me. They still cook fresh but they sell White Castle burgers in the freezer section. They suck either way.

You guys don't know what's good. I microwave most everything and it tastes great. And microwave breakfast sandwiches are awesome.

I don't even use a microwave to reheat things. I'd rather use a saucepan/whatever as the heated food stays warm longer. That's why I have and use a kitchen appliance called a stove. Great invention, stoves. Stoves changed the kitchen world for the better; microwaves changed the kitchen world for the worse.

Like I said, Ding! food really sucks.

I need to find my cell phone. I tried calling but it is going immediately to voice mail for some reason. I'm terrible with electronics. There are tons of features on it I never use anyway, but what's most aggravating is that I have some awful ring tone on it, "Please enjoy this ring tone while your party is reached." I don't enjoy it at all and neither does anybody else. It sounds like a rap song and would be more appropriate for someone living in Chicago." I didn't chose it; I don't know how it got on there. When I tried to change it, Verizon was supposed to send me a secret code by text which they never sent.

Anyone I need to find my phone despite the awful ring tone. Maybe a RC person could put a plea in to St Anthony or whomever is responsible for helping one find lost items. Thanks.

Neil Patrick Harris' character was funny, most of the rest of the show was not.

I always got the impression the female who was on again/off again with the main story line character was written by gay men, because she acts like a gay man most of the time. I mean, she's Hollywood attractive, but morally empty. At least NPH's character was funny, while being morally empty.

388 Can someone give me the gist of the "puppy - monkey - baby commercial" ?''

Ok, sure. it was :
puppy monkey baby beer
puppy monkey baby beer
puppy monkey baby beer
puppy monkey baby beer
dance

Apparently, someone who makes big bucks thought it was amusing. Someone who should be unemployed in the near future.

Chrisite has issued a number of pardons to people caught up in NJs horrific gun laws.

Which goes to show you how much of a fraud Chtisitie is that he never sought to change the laws because the next Governor is going to be a Democrat who would never pardon these people once again showing how arbitrary and capricious most gun laws in NJ are.

puppy head, monkey torso, baby from the diaper down.

Silly ad for a drink that has Mountain Dew, juice, and caffeine.

All three. Get it?

You don't know that.

How would you know if you don't try.

One of the issues is concealed carry reciprocity.

That woman faced 25 years in state prison for simply crossing from PA to NJ with her PA leagal CC weapon.

The fact that NJ doesn't recognize reciprocity with any of its connecting states is a joke.

405 Jesus, You have given me to know and understand in what a soul's greatness consists: not in great deeds but in great love. Love has its worth, and it confers greatness on all our deeds. Although our actions are small and ordinary in themselves, because of love, they become great and powerful before God.

And a Supreme Court that is cowardly.

There is no way that Christie could change NJ gun laws. He would fail in the attempt, and use a huge amount of political capital.

Well you do what's right.

That woman does 25 years in prison if it's a Democrat governor.

Chrisite has/had a moral responsibility to do something about that law.

So the big thing now is the gun grabbers in NJ want to tie the firearms ID to your DL so we should just roll over because the NJ legeslature is Donk?

with property owners suing over the route taking their property. They

Yeah what's 3 years in prison for violating some arbitrary and capricious law.

Chtisitie had/has a moral obligation to do something about that law.

It's not like he was using his political capital to achieve anything of value in NJ anyway.
