Quote of the Day I

iowahtweetdemodebate

Quote of the Day II

So if I've got this right: The Supreme Court is the totally unsupreme low-level trial court. The Supreme Court Appellate Division is the intermediary court between the non-supreme Supreme Court and the really supreme Court of Appeals. The Court of Appeals is the supreme court to which you appeal decisions from the non-supreme Supreme Court and the mildly supreme Supreme Court Appellate Division.

I'm reminded of the old joke:

"I'd like to have this suit cleaned."

"Certainly, sir. That'll be a week on Thursday."

"But it says 24-Hour Dry-Cleaners."

"That's just the name of the shop, sir."

In New York the Supreme Court is just the name of the shop.

California Colleges to Make Proving Innocence a Punishable Offense

In the future all college students will be porn stars or rapists, possibly both.

Of course the new policy is coming out of California, which led the way in inserting campus bureaucrats into the bedroom with its "affirmative consent" policies. These policies mandate how students must engage in sexual activity - not as a passionate act but as a contractual question-and-answer session. The only way to prove one followed such a policy is to videotape the encounter, but now, California colleges are making such recordings a violation of school policy.

...In a Q&A with the University of California's daily newspaper, the Daily Bruin, Title IX officer Kathleen Salvaty said students could be expelled for recording sexual encounters without consent.

Was Cruz's "New York Values" Statement Actually a "Smear"?

Time magazine and pretty much every NYC-based journalist say yes but Patterico points out via Alex Griswold that the Andrew Cuomo, the Governor of New York, himself made it clear that conservatives are unwelcome in the state and that their values are very different than that of New Yorkers:

Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that's who they are and if they are the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that's not who New Yorkers are.

Steyn on Rickman

More or less exactly thirty years ago, I saw Alan Rickman in the role that made his name - as the Vicomte de Valmont in Christopher Hampton's Les Liaisons Dangereuses at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Barbican Pit. Theatre critics are overly fond of the phrase "a commanding performance", but I've rarely seen anything as commanding as Rickman on stage that night: he was a very palpable flesh-and-blood embodiment of the title. From about 20 minutes after his entrance, you could feel all around you that approximately 90 per cent of the female audience and 30 per cent of the male were just longing to be taken by him. I made the mistake of inviting a young lady along, and at supper afterwards she did her best not to make it too obvious that she found me wanting by comparison.

Alan-Rickman-Le-Vicomte-de-Valmont

CBS: It is France's fault Muslims rape and kill in France

This combination of poverty and the desire for acceptance is a classic recipe for gang recruitment. We've seen it in Los Angeles. We've seen it in Chicago. Now, we are seeing it in France. Societal conditions breed a population of young men, disenchanted with the establishment and desperately seeking a community of protection and inclusion; then in comes a "brotherhood" of one form or another, purporting to provide exactly those things. It is as 18-year-old Julien Villain, a French-Moroccan resident of Saint Denis explains, "If you look at the situation of people, you understand the path."

Those who have no religion are bound to be forever mystified by the motives of those who are religiously driven. And here I'll quote Bernard Lewis from 1976 again:

To the modern Western mind, it is not conceivable that men would fight and die in such numbers over mere differences of religion; there have to be some other "genuine" reasons underneath the religious veil..This is reflected in the present inability, political, journalistic, and scholarly alike, to recognize the importance of the factor of religion in the current affairs of the Muslim world and in the consequent recourse to the language of left-wing and right-wing, progressive and conservative, and the rest of the Western terminology...

Koming Kaos in the Kingdom

Rumors are that Saudi King Salman, 80, will abdicate in favor of his 30 year old son, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, breaking the traditional Saudi order of succession.

If true, this would be a revolution: the Saudi succession has gone from one septuagenarian to the next in a ritualized pattern for decades. Putting a young and vigorous 30-year-old in the top spot would change the way the country works and, potentially, would make the new king one of the most powerful people in the world.

U.S. officials are clearly hoping this doesn't happen. The defense minister has been associated with the recent line of Saudi policy that has been shaking up the region, and it is predicated on a belief that, with the U.S. no longer a reliable ally, the Saudis have to take their destiny in their own hands.

News You Can Use: How You Can Actually Win Money While Partying At Vegas Strip Clubs

I'm a bit old school in that I like to enjoy my vices individually on their own but I have no problem with this since as I recall from my wayward youth there's a decent amount of down-time in strip clubs between acts.

For a brief, shimmering moment, Jimmy T. was living a certain kind of Sin City dream: hanging out with beautiful strippers, drinking beer and winning $4,000 in cash.

Jimmy, a bartender who asked us not to reveal his last name, recently pulled off this triumphant trifecta at a strip club called OG's on a bleak stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard. Formerly known as Olympic Gardens, OG's is one of just four jiggle joints in Vegas where you can risk money on lap dances and video poker in the same room - or even at the same time.

I was pleased to see a lot of the comments were either: "gawd, this is tiresome, keep it to yourself!" or, "hey isn't a 14 year old child (legally) discussing her sexuality on twitter inappropriate and creepy?"

I used to live near a busy LA street that had sandwich shack just a few yards off the main thoroughfare.

Owned by a Korean couple. Fresh stuff for a decent price.

Breakfast sandwich. The problem was he didn't know how to cook bacon; it was always a half cooked, stringy blob on the sandwich.

I never knew how to correct that and just ate the whole blob at one go.

Horde, well done. So well done that are two cases outside my original thinking but definitely within the broader meaning.

Countries named after people (living, actual people, at the time of the founding of said countries): Saudi Arabia and Lichtenstein (royal family's names, in both cases).

Bolivia and Colombia were obviously named "for" people, but not in the same way (i.e., the al-Saud created and still runs Saudi A.).

El Salvador (buzzer) - no, don't think being named for religious figures counts, at least if we're limiting things to modern historical figures. San Marino - dunno. Don't think so. But the upstairs review team is open to new video replays from different angles.

There's got to be a market for an editable version of Rusiian novels wherein you can rename the characters. When you first encounter an interminably long name you click on it and substitute your own. To wit: "Count Alexei Ivanovich Smeramalamadingdongsky" "Count Douchenozzle". Double click to provide a diminutive "Douchie".

I lived in Brookline and Brighton, MA, in the early to mid 90's. Very heavy Russian Jewish presence. Met some genuinely fascinating people.

My old landlord, Anatoli Davidovitch - Red Army vet, GPW, Order of Lenin. Did five years in gulag.

Asked him what he did.

"I cut down trees."

No, what did you do to get there?

"I took a train and then walked a long, long way."

Fine. What crime landed you there?

"The bolshevik revolution."

Uncle Palpatine, that's a great story.

Wow, a survivor of both German hospitality AND Stalin's reward for same (the gulag). Amazing. I think he's one of a small lot of winners.

Similarly, an ex-gf's father (German) had survived Soviet imprisonment at the end of the war (he was swept up and sent to the eastern front just in time for the surrender). He died in his 50s, had had TB, etc. He too had done well just to come back to Germany alive.

Jane, the point is that the lefty progs do play "snap the wet towel tag" all the time with murderers like Chavez, Kim Jong Un, All the Cuban ruling class, dictators, the freakin' FARC, various terrorists and so on because of their "authenticity" and the need to support some cause.

The cause is decapitated victims, houses burned to the ground, families imprisoned, shakedowns, bought elections, assassinations, burned out farmers, refugees --- and that doesn't even touch the simple murders, rapes, robberies and beatings.

Sean Penn wants to play with the sharks. He is BFF with Hugo Chavez and sat so grim and sad at his funeral.
He wants to be the center of attention and have raffish friends who have that whiff of violence and untold riches about them?

He can also be shot in the middle of the afternoon walking to the beach in Maracaibo because some tough with political connections decides to kill the fifth man he saw wearing shoes.
He can have his teeth beaten in a riot in Caracas.
He can watch his kids die of repeated heroin ODs
He can wonder where his brother disappeared to, forever, and not know if it was the corrupt government, the bought paramilitaries, or the drug gangs.
He can be arrested for having the wrong political views, or for having the wrong house
He can be told he has to work as a dishwasher because he can't speak in public any more, and have his apartment torn apart looking for "evidence" once a month.

If you sleep with dogs you wake up with fleas. Penn should hide in Carmel where he has security that the average Mexican can't even dream of, and be glad he escaped.

They'd be all around the palace. I'd turn Mecca into a giant Vegas, whorehouses and casinos up one side and down the other. And all my minsters would wear fezes. With propellers on top.

The rules of succession would be determined by an orgy-off of some sort. Whoever banged the most babes in the shortest amount of time or something would be the Crown Prince. And anyone could challenge that at any time just by saying the word, and we'll have another orgy at the palace.

My sympathies to him, and to you and Gingy, and to Little, and to the greater circles. Just remember that being diagnosed bipolar beats the everloving crap out of being undiagnosed bipolar.

Bipolar, by itself, is relatively easy to treat -- as opposed to bipolar with schizophrenia, which can make your current roller coaster look like a speed-bump. And remember that there is a significant correlation between bipolar and creativity -- if he can somewhat control and harness his mood swings, he may attain greatness beyond the bounds of normalcy.

My best to all, but especially to Big. He probably thinks he just got branded with a scarlet letter -- but, really, he just got a stake in the ground to measure from....and a whole bunch of tools to do things with.

439 Help me figure out a vexing sociological mystery that's really been bothering me. For some reason I just can't pinpoint what the most likely answer is.

Here's the situation:

I recently attended a big convention. Every year it's held in a huge convention center and there are literally thousands of booths and tens of thousands of attendees going booth to booth looking at new releases, hearing sales shpiels, etc. This is normal -- many of you have probably been to similar conventions.

At this convention in particular, there is a lot of "schwag" as it's called -- freebie giveaways by the companies hosting each booth. In addition, there is even more literature that everyone collects -- every booth has brochures and sales lists and samples etc. that they're handing out. And this particular convention also allows customers to buy products (usually limited to one per person) at each booth as well. And remember, there are thousands of booths. So it quickly can add up.

This convention has been around for a long time, and about ten or fifteen years ago things were starting to get out of hand as attendees were bringing massive backpacks and wheeled luggage and huge gym bags to collect all the mountains of schwag and literature, and the aisles were getting really clogged with people wheeling and carrying around literally tons of stuff.

So ten or fifteen years ago they instituted a new system whereby attendees weren't allowed to bring in their own bags (aside from small purses), but instead each person upon entry was handed one empty official convention bag to hold their schwag. If your bag got full, theoretically you could exit the convention, go unload it in your car, and then come back and refill it again -- and in fact some people did do this -- but the new system generally limited each customer to one bag full of schwag per day.

Now at first, this wasn't so bad, because the official convention bags which everyone got were fairly large, made of heavy-duty plastic, and could handle a pretty substantial amount of schwag, People got used to them.

And then this year happened.

And everything suddenly went to hell.

I (and apparently just about everyone else) was shocked upon first entry to get this year's "convention bag," only to discover that it not only was smaller than in previous years, but most disastrously was some kind of jive-ass "green bag" made of "natural corn" which is "compostable" and is "carbon neutral" and "good for the environment," etc.

Why is this so bad? Because the goddamn new bags were total pieces of shit. First of all, they were extremely easy to accidentally puncture, as the "natural corn byproduct" has almost no resilience or strength. If you put a single brochure in the bag, the corner of the paper could (and often did) poke a hole in the side, which would in fairly rapid order start to widen and tear and before long your bag had a big hole in it. Secondly, the handles tore right off with the slightest weight in the bag. Thirdly, the bags seemed to be extremely heat sensitive (part of their fabulous "compostable" aspect), such that if you put them down on a warm electronic device or near a hot light or whatever, the bag would kind of "melt" -- more like shrivel and evaporate.

Just the worst, crappiest bags you can imagine. I saw many many attendees struggling with them and complaining amongst themselves. By my off-the-cuff estimates based on personal observations, at least 90% of attendees were visibly unhappy with the new bags.

But whenever I spoke to anyone who was part of the company putting on the convention, they all seemed to be completely oblivious to this unhappiness, and when queried would say how great the fabulous new "green" bags were.

OK, so that's the situation. What I want to know -- what I need to know -- is this:

What was the real actual reason for the decision to use the bags at this year's show?

Options:

a. The convention organizers are themselves leftist "progressives," and sincerely think that "green" is automatically morally superior, user experience be damned; or

b. The convention organizers themselves aren't "progressives," but they mistakenly assumed that most of the attendees are progressives, and as such are all masochistic and would applaud the new "green" bags even to their own discomfort; or

c. The convention organizers are totally disconnected from the "user experience," and some left-wing mid-level buyer staged a silent coup and ordered "green" bags that pissed everyone off, but the bosses in charge are unaware of what happened; or

d. The convention organizers purposely ordered horrible bags as a way to prevent attendees from taking too much schwag, but in so doing only infuriated all the attendees; or

e. Something I can't think of.

Help! What is the reason? Why were these bags used at the convention this year? It's driving me nuts.

That's true. I can't reveal the exact theme of the convention, for security reasons, but I can say this:

The convention is in no way political -- nothing about its topic is connected to or biased toward any political viewpoint.

Basically, it's just a general interest convention on a general interest topic, not limited to ay particular demographic group. Imagine, for example, conventions about consumer electronic devices, or food, or health & fitness, or a job fair, or whatever. Really, really mainstream.

Ah but you see, in the past they already did limit bag size for the very purpose to denying schwag to attendees, because people were just harvesting vast piles of it. That was the reason for the "bag system" in the first place -- to limit schwag-hording.

So it's not unreasonable to surmise that maybe they think the previous big-bags were just too generous, and tried to limit their size even further, for some inscrutable reason.

I suspect you are right in this case as well. On the Web site for the convention there are little self-congratuletory references to "sustainability" or other such bullshit, which leads me to think that the organizers have drunk the Kool-Aid as well, meaning that the reason is "a."

But in such doing they will kill the whole enterprise. If this keeps up, everyone will stay away because without a decent bag it isn't worth the effort, and the convention will start to die.

Will the Kool-Aid drinking honchos ever understand how they killed their own convention?

It's one thing to stop people from bringing in wheeled carts because they cause conjestion, and to force people to use fall-abart bags to get any schwag.

Very good theory, and one that I considered, but I actually did research and discovered that while plastic bags are indeed "banned" in California (and in this locality), the ban only applies to certain situations, and is not universal. Generally, the ban only applies to large retail markets, but not to corner stores, and conventions and similar gatherings are specifically exempted. So, plastic bags in this setting are not illegal.

Second of all, the "green" bags are actually MORE expensive than the plastic bags (I researched the general price range.) So they didn't save money by buying the new kind.

Well yes, you are correct, there are "solutions" for the creative attendee. My strategy (one employed by many other attendees as well) is to bring in the one allowed small "purse" (or "murse" as the case may be), which only looks small to the guards inspecting you as you enter, but which then secretly expand to much more capacious dimensions once you're on the convention floor. Very, very clever.

But my question was not how to defeat the new system, but rather a sociological conundrum of what motivated the organizers to shoot themselves in the foot in the first place?

Frankly it sounds like the organizers don't want you destracted from whatever program they are putting on and are willing to piss off people and even drive some away if only it increases the attendence of their program.

I wonder why George Stuffy doesn't get a disclaimer subtitle on his interview. Trump did call him on it Sunday though.

I have backchannels to both, if necessary. Last time I checked, they're both fine.

Try reading Shakespeare the way he wrote it. Not only have the pronunciations changed but some words have changed completely.

Any language is only as fluid as is those who use it. They change. This can not be helped. "Swag" is no less of a word than "loot" because it is relatively new.

479 That's just a matter of necessity. If they demanded that teachers
demonstrate any sort of competency in their subjects then the whole
public K-12 system would collapse from lack of teachers.

Once upon a time I would have agreed with you, but since Mrs Hades came along I've gotten a chance to see how the sausage is made, so to speak.

Long story short, there are some truly awful teachers out there who are in large part protected by the teachers unions (no union in NC), and there are more and more of them every day for a simple reason that will be explained directly, but the majority of them are still good and talented people who are thwarted not only by their administration who are quick to jump on the "newest" and "bestest. thing. EVAR!" to come along (see Common Core) but also by the raw materials they have to work with ("What do you mean momma's precious can't read? Not even trying? Well, it MUST BE YOUR FAULT!!!") and the lack of support from the aforementioned administration.

You have second graders who won't do the work and will tell the teachers "I don't give a fuck what you do" (actual quote) because the parents won't discipline their children and the school system is not allowed to (we got swats in school, which was vastly preferred to having them call our parents). Combine this with the law that says all children must be in school and you have a recipe for failure.

How do you fix it? I don't know, but the root of the problem is the lack of discipline, and that must start in the home...but of course the incentive for that has been removed by a "well meaning" government that has replaced fathers with welfare checks and dumbed down the entire system to cater to the least common denominator...and left the teachers holding the bag. No wonder the good ones are leaving in droves, and to fill the gap you lower the standards so that any idiot can get a teachers certificate...and a lot of them do.

Once upon a time I considered taking part in the "troops to teachers" program (where I would have gotten a teaching certificate and been a middle or high school shop teacher with the agreement I would get my BA in education within 5 years), but once I studied the issue I realized that I would have wanted to choke one of Mamas Angels out within a short amount of time.

Side note...we had a RIO in my first squadron who had his degree in education. He went to fly the backseat of Tomcats because at his first teaching job he realized he had made a huge mistake in his choice of professions. Just before he went to OCS he told one of the parents to put her kid on a diet so she would look good dancing on the pole, cause if she kept going the way she was going that was going to be about the best career choice open for her.

480 The thing about Shakespeare is, when he rhymed words like "love" and "prove", or "eye" and "reality" you don't know which pronounciation to use.

481 Any language is only as fluid as is those who use it. They change. This can not be helped.

I'm not arguing that.

"Swag" is no less of a word than "loot" because it is relatively new.

Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Old and Unimproved. at January 19, 2016 04:01 AM (WVsWD)

"Bling" and "swag" are retarded.

Languages can be dragged down to the lowest common denominator (instead of having the lowest common denominator lifted up to the language). Languages can be destroyed by speakers with minimal vocabularies and little feel for the grammar.

Just being fluid says nothing about whether a language is advancing or receding. It is how the language is changing that is important. If you think that moving towards ghetto talk and pigeon-English is a positive change then that's where we'll have to disagree. Sure, it will be very convenient when the language is reduced to 1000 words and 3 simple tenses ...

40,000 BC?

Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Old and Unimproved. at January 19, 2016 03:46 AM (WVsWD)

Proto-Indo-European wasn't even a language at that point.

On a side note, people reciting ancient dead languages like Proto-Indo-European, Hittite, &c.:

Actually pretty interesting if you just listen and try to guess which language sounds "normal"... chances are it'll be Proto-Indo-European or one of the Indo-European languages

Bless you, Adriane. Please continue to advise, counsel, and assist Weirddave. I will, as well.....but we don't have kids. I'm doing it from the perspective of one of the three people on my mother's side of eight who have not endured semi-involuntary mental care.

In other words, my aunt and uncle have done supervised drug rehab or been institutionalized; and my cousins who I grew up with have been in a variety of programs....and I have a great deal of sympathy for those on both sides of the rift.

But, in the end, I am cthulhu -- and embody chaos, and put a nice spin on it. Your message is better than mine.

I don't. I just tend not to use it, myself, other than for laughs. I call it what it is, which you seem seriously reluctant to do, for some reason.

I guess you could say, in the modern vernacular, I'm "all wee wee'd up" about it.

490 So...

Just finished watching the first episode of "Kono subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!"

A shut-in high schooler sacrifices a life for a girl who, it turns out, wasn't in danger and he died of shock (even his parents laughed at it).

Even the "goddess" he's assigned to for choosing belittles him.

His only choice in the afterlife that involves his keeping his memories is to go into a D&D and choose one skill of weapon. He chooses that belittling goddess... and is approved.

At the D&D style guild he has above average intellegence, low luck, and agerage everything else... the "goddess" who is forced to be the "skill or weapon" that must accompany him is expert in everything but luck and intellegence, which are indicated as being low.

Possibly "boredom"

I'm not really a language purist. I just have my sense of aesthetics and utility. I hate to see beautiful, intricate systems destroyed by the slobbering mob.

I studied German one summer (I had to take German for one of my doctoral language exams - idiotic, anachronistic, silly little tests but we had to take them) and I couldn't make heads or tails of it. I know that English is Germanic ... but ... it was pretty messed up.

502 "I hate to see beautiful, intricate systems destroyed by the slobbering mob. "

I am sure we can go back to around 1600-1675 and find the same kinds of thought about where the English language was heading then.

Have you already forgotten that the common English language was for peasants only? The Nobility and and Royalty did not speak it. In public at least.

Killing all business and replacing it with State owned dog crap is the goal of leftism. The answer is A. It is intentional. The fact that it is incrementally done identifies it as Progressives rather than Communists doing it. The Communists would have had armed thugs executing transgressors and their immediate families; the Progressives will get there - just give them time.
