Your Neanderthal DNA may help you fight disease, and give you allergies

Researches report that in many people a group of genes that govern the first line of defense against pathogens was probably inherited from Neanderthals.

These same genes appear to play a role in some peoples allergic reaction to things like pollen and pet fur as well, the scientists said. Among some Asian and European populations, the researchers found that these particular Neanderthal genes can be found in 50% of people. The findings imply that these Neanderthal genes must have served our ancestors well if they are still hanging out in our genome today, and especially at such high frequency

17 Which suggests an irony for Western and particularly for American
conservatives. In a less decadent era, our forefathers hoped to stop the
march of history, to redirect its rushing course. In our era, history
seems to have slowed to a depressing, repetitious crawl, and it might be
our mission to start it moving once again.

Smartphones, facebook, ipads, twitter would be some of the noteworthy tech changes, and they could joke about people being scared of Bush looking at their library history vs. NSA/Snowden/Obamacare totes government access to your life. "No credible threat of terrorism in the US" - Obama, just before jetting off to Hawaii

Posted by: Lizzy at January 08, 2016 10:11 AM (NOIQH)

47 So, is anyone going to call Obama on the two biggest whoppers he told last night?

I watched my 0-2 minutes of the Townhall -- toward the 0 end, WAY toward the 0 end (I didn't watch) -- but, I did see the video clip of Taya Kyle and read the article (linked in the dump) about Kimberly Corban and, in both accounts of their interactions with the President [by the way, somebody on Team Obama has some explaining to do on how those two were allowed to speak -- or, perhaps he orchestrated this thinking he could handle them, being the I'm-a-better-speechwriter-than-my-speechwriter kind of a guy he is], the women pointed out facts the President promptly lied about.

In the case of Mrs. Kyle, she pointed out that gun violence has dropped and suggested it could be related to the increase in gun ownership, (I hate that she didn't more forcefully lay out the argument but, I understand the need for decorum and deference to the President - even this one).

President Liar then said, without any hesitation, that gun violence was worse in areas where gun ownership was up and that gun violence was down in areas where "common sense" gun control laws were enacted. Seriously? WTF???

I'm sure Mrs. Kyle regretted her deference after hearing that line of bullshit.

Then, in the article about Kimberly Corbin, I read that she admitted to having "depression, PTSD and stress-related seizures," asking the President why he wanted to make it harder for her to purchase and possess a weapon.

Again, President Liar lied and said, he didn't want to make it harder for her to purchase and possess a firearm.

Wait, correct me if I'm wrong but, didn't his let-it-be-written-so-let-it-be-done edicts have provision where doctors are supposed to rat out their patients with mental illness? Aren't depression and PTSD classified as mental illnesses.

Where is the media? Hell, Cooper was standing RIGHT THERE!

53 Something funny about those oil numbers. Stock people and activists have a decided tendency to look at "the energy sector" as if Standard had never been de-verticalized. There are thousands of ways to lose money in the oil business, even during boom times. Exploration, delivery, refining, and marketing are distinctly different kinds of business, and have pretty vicious cycles. In olden times, vertical-combination "monopolies" were thought of as the way to average things out. Styles changed, and now there are brutal shakeouts and takeovers instead. Constantly.

I simply do not believe that oil industries have not lost money in 48 years.

Again I hear the small voice of that Tenderfoot in the back saying "How do you know this, Mr Davis?"

The deal would cover all of the 19 novels and 125 short stories in the William Faulkner estate, as well as other works, with the exception of those currently contracted with other parties.

I'm watching CBS News streaming right now and they're definitely reporting that the perp says he did it for Islam.

shooter allegedly shot 13 times into the police cruiser

and both the cop and the shooter are still alive
---------
We can give thanks to God that the shooter's skill with the pistol was not equal to his zeal. As long as the bad guys believe that firearms are magic murder machines that work of their own accord we may yet prevail. The policeman was surprised and injured, had to suck that wound penalty on his attacks, so he gets a pass if the terrorist wanna-be survived.

181 As I often complain, I was a National Merit Scholar, with a scholarship that was not worth a damn. Having one disqualified you for most other "aid."

But the biggest break I ever got on college costs was the Book Scholarship. If you were Dean's List, you got a lot of books at the official bookstore for free.

Which leads me to think, current costs being what they are, maybe the CMP should sponsor a Gun Scholarship. Keep those grades up, and walk heavy.

182 Did I also hear correctly last night that claimed in some neighborhoods it's easier and cheaper for a 12 year old to buy a gun than a book?

Average non-academic hardcover book in 2013 was about $27. I DEFINITELY need to find these neighborhoods...

185 Low population States always wind up high in any "per capita" statistic.

probably, but even if you compare Texas and Florida with NJ and MA (All pretty populated states)

there is a significant difference

TX 10.6 (deaths per 100,000)
FL 11.9
NJ 5.6
MA 4.4

191 let's look at some sentences by Grande Dame Peggie Noonan:

"More touchingly, Jeb Bush again warned the base about Donald Trump...

It reflects badly on the party that Donald Trump --- whom one journalist this week characterized as a guy running around with his hair on fire --- had to become the party's 2016 thought leader. Bernie Sanders has, in a way, had the wit to see this, which is why he said he is reaching out to Trump supporters. Reaching out. What a concept."

these are the sentences of someone whose heart and class pride are firmly standing in the way of her head

193 "Earlier we gave a big picture explanation how the US can add 292,000 while average hourly wages actually decline. Below is a more nuanced answer, looking at the breakdown of jobs by industry in December. It will probably come as no surprise to anyone that for another consecutive month, the well-paying jobs: mining and logging, wholesale trade, manufacturing, and information barely posted a net increase.

Alternatively, the worst quality jobs continued to soar, pushed higher once again by none other than education and health, where Obamacare was once again instrumental to propel healthcare jobs by a 52,600 surge in December. "

198 148 President Liar then said, without any hesitation, that gun violence was worse in areas where gun ownership was up and that gun violence was down in areas where "common sense" gun control laws were enacted. Seriously? WTF???
I wish she would have pointed out that Chicago had 485 murders in 2015 and Baltimore had 344 and in both cities they have "strict gun control"

Just because the guy you're killing agrees with you doesn't make it not a crime.

Having sodomy with your wife is still a crime in some States, but hardly a "crime problem" such as people care about it.
And by "your wife" I mean your wife.
